The British government is at it again, weaponizing its so-called “Online Safety Act” to crack down on speech it doesn’t like.

This time, the target is none other than the online forum 4chan, the notorious online discussion board where anonymous users post unfiltered commentary that sends elites into fits.

On June 10, 2025, Ofcom, the UK’s Orwellian Office of Communications, opened an official investigation into 4chan.

According to Ofcom, the platform failed to hand over information on demand, did not file the “appropriate illegal content risk assessments,” and didn’t bow to London’s censorship mandates. In other words, 4chan refused to bend the knee.

By August 13, Ofcom escalated matters, issuing a provisional notice of contravention under the Act and threatening fines of £20,000 ($27,100) plus daily penalties until the platform complied.

Israel is considering a plan that would relocate Gaza residents to South Sudan, according to a new report.

The report from the Associated Press, which is based on unnamed sources, indicates that the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is eager to build upon a concept voiced in February by President Donald Trump to shift much of the Palestinian population of Gaza elsewhere.

The concept of depopulating Gaza has been condemned by Palestinian leaders. Egypt dislikes the idea, fearing it could lead to a refugee influx along the border it shares with Gaza. Israel has discussed the idea with other nations, but nothing has moved beyond the talking stage.

However, Joe Szlavik, the founder of a lobbying firm, said South Sudan officials have spoken to him about the concept, and said an Israeli delegation is expected to visit South Sudan at an unknown date.

Szlavik said the costs of the relocation would be borne by Israel.

Without mentioning any specific nation, Netanyahu said he supports relocating Gaza’s Palestinians.

The Food and Drug Administration on Aug. 14 approved a therapy for a rare disease called recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP).

Regulators cleared Papzimeos, an immunotherapy made by Precigen, citing data from a single-arm, open-label trial that looked at how it performed in adults with RRP and who needed at least three surgeries a year.

Patients received four injections of the therapy over 12 weeks following surgical procedures.

About half of the participants needed no surgery in the year following treatment. The safety profile was also deemed favorable.

“Randomized trials are not always needed to approve medical products and this approval is proof of that philosophy,” Dr. Vinay Prasad, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.

“The FDA will always demand the correct clinical study for the specific medical product and disease. Our requirements for products given to tens of millions of healthy people will be different than products given to at most hundreds or thousands of patients with unique diseases.”

The approval is the first announcement from Prasad after he rejoined the FDA following his July resignation.

Prasad had received criticism for not approving enough new drugs and therapies, including from the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, which said that Prasad “has long criticized such single-arm studies that have no placebo groups.” Continue...

Schwab was under investigation in April this year after a whistleblower alleged financial impropriety and behavioral issues. The 87-year-old Schwab had already resigned from his position as chairman of the board shortly before the investigation was launched.

On 17 August, Bolivia held presidential and general elections. Former socialist president Evo Morales, founder of the MAS party, was barred from running. A Russian general has been seriously injured near the Ukrainian border, officials in Russia's republic of Dagestan - which is where he's from - have said, which is consistent with earlier reports sourced to Ukrainian intelligence.

Dagestan’s leader, Sergei Melikov, announced on Telegram that Gen. Esedulla Abachev was critically wounded several days ago in a border region. Regional media says he holds the honorary government-awarded title of 'Hero of Russia'.

"He is currently receiving care at one of the country’s top military hospitals," Melikov wrote, nothing that the general's condition is serious but stable.

Ukraine’s military intelligence had previously claimed that 57-year-old Abachev lost both an arm and a leg after his convoy was attacked overnight in Russia’s Kursk region.

For those who aren’t, a quick primer: the DSA imposes a legal requirement on very large online platforms (VLOPs), and very large online search engines (VLOSEs) to take prompt action against illegal content hosted on their platforms, either by removing it, blocking it, or providing certain information to the authorities concerned.

VLOPs and VLOSEs are also required to take action against risks that extend beyond illegal content, including vague threats to “civic discourse”, “electoral processes” and “public health”. It is down to the Commission or national authorities to define what those threats might entail. This is where the EU’s mass censorship regime began to take form.

The overarching goal of the DSA is to combat — i.e., suppress — mis- and disinformation online, not just in Europe but potentially across the world. Russian law enforcement has broken up a Western-trained Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group that planned terrorist attacks against transport infrastructure in Russia’s Bryansk Region, the Federal Security Service (FSB) has reported.

During a gunfight with the perpetrators, three of the group’s members were killed and three others, including its commander, were captured, the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.

It described the saboteurs as special forces operatives, supervised by Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR).

"The control and training of the... group was carried out with the direct participation of Western intelligence officers in Ukraine, as well as in Lithuania, Estonia and Norway,” the statement read.

On Tuesday, the Crown quietly withdrew charges against Hillier tied to a May 1, 2021, anti-lockdown protest in Cornwall, as reported by the Cornwall Standard Freeholder.

The court’s decision determined that the restrictions on public gatherings violated Hillier’s Charter Right to peaceful assembly. The Ontario Superior Court judge who initially heard Hillier’s case got it wrong, the appeal court said in April, by casting too wide a net when weighing whether these restrictions were a justifiable limit on our freedoms.

Turns out, they weren’t justified at all. The Charter exists to protect Canadians’ right to speak out, to gather, to resist — and Hillier’s case just proved it.

Assistant Crown attorney Claudette Breault told Justice of the Peace Linda Leblanc that, in addition to the Cornwall charge being dropped, so was a similar charge tied to another protest that Hillier attended in Brockville. Public Health, despite implementing restrictions that contributed to increased screen time, reports that teens significantly exceed recommended daily limits, leading to higher rates of anxiety, depression, irritability, and hyperactivity.

A new Public Health Agency of Canada report found that the vast majority of high school students are exceeding recommended screen time limits, a trend amplified by Covid-era school closures and forced social isolation.

Surveying 26,000 students nationwide, the agency found that 89-96% of teens surpass the advised two-hour daily screen time cap, as reported by Blacklock’s.

Alarmingly, this excessive screen usage is affecting young women and girls more than boys. The report, “The Health of Young People in Canada: Focus on Mental Health,” found that up to 54% of girls and 40% of boys reported being online “almost all the time.”

This further serves to showcase how pandemic restrictions reshaped youth behaviour. While screen use skyrocketed, participation in traditional activities plummeted. Fewer than 60% of teens now engage in team sports, only a fifth join religious groups, and less than one in ten participate in Scouts, Girl Guides, or similar programs.

The internet, now nearly universal among Canadian adolescents, has become a dominant force, with heavy usage linked to increased depression, anxiety, irritability, and hyperactivity.

These findings follow a 2021 agency report, “Impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Canadian Children,” which noted that nine in ten parents reported daily screen use by their children during lockdowns. Parents of children with cognitive, behavioural, or emotional challenges were particularly concerned, with nearly three-quarters describing themselves as “very” or “extremely” worried about excessive screen time.

The Tsuut’ina Nation has issued a ban on members of the media accessing its lands, over concerns that coverage of a human trafficking case could cause distress among band members.

A July 16 memorandum obtained by Postmedia and sent by Senior Operations Officer Andrew Onespot Jr. to the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service (TNPS) asked First Nations officers to prevent reporters from entering their territory located southwest of Calgary.

A TNPS spokesperson told Postmedia the directive is in effect and will remain so until further notice from the band’s leadership.

The media ban encompasses all access, including vehicles, personnel, and equipment, unless approved by the proper authorities.

The directive followed the arrests of ten men in connection with a joint undercover operation at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino, conducted by the TNPS and the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

The investigation, part of Project Buffalo, began in May and targeted the sexual exploitation of minors.

None of the individuals arrested in the sting operation were Tsuut’ina Nation members.

China on Aug. 15 filed a complaint to the WTO over additional tariffs Canada imposed on Chinese steel and aluminum last month, arguing they are inconsistent with international trade rules.

The minister’s office said Ottawa is now seeking a joint economic and trade commission meeting with China to put its concerns on the table.

Prime Minister Mark Carney on July 16 announced additional 25 percent tariffs on steel imports from all non-U.S. countries containing steel melted and poured in China, saying they were aimed at protecting Canada’s domestic industry against trade diversion from other countries.

“China is engaging in non-market acts, policies, and practices with respect to their steel and aluminum sectors which could lead to an increase of Chinese imports that adversely affect domestic production, as well as planned investments in Canada’s steel and aluminum industries,” reads the government surtax order on the Chinese metals, registered in the Canada Gazette on Aug. 13.

The number of RCMP officers on long-term off-duty sick leave has reached an all-time high, and has become an “area of concern” for frontline officers and senior leadership within the organization, according to a new report.

The Management Advisory Board (MAB), which advises the RCMP commissioner, said in a May report that long-term off-duty sick leave (LTODSL) is “one of the most critical issues” facing the RCMP, as it impacts the operational, financial, and reputational aspects of the organization.

“It is safe to say we heard about this issue almost every time we interacted with RCMP members, and the views all converged on the need for a rethink of the model,” MAB member Ghayda Hassan said in the report.

The report found that the number of RCMP members on LTODSL had increased significantly from 2010 to 2024, with the incidence rate climbing from 28.5 occurrences in every 1,000 regular members to 81 in 1,000 members—a 184 percent increase.

The report also found that as of the start of 2025, there were 1,413 RCMP regular members on LTODSL, which represents 7 percent of the force. Of these, 580 members had been on sick leave for a year or longer, while 243 had been on sick leave for two years or longer.

The rise in LTODSL cases presents an “area of well-being concern at the individual level and poses significant operational challenges at the organizational level,” and also has the possibility to impact public safety in Canada, according to the report. Continue...

The United States has placed sanctions on a Canadian judge and three other judges who sit on the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying they authorized ICC investigations into U.S. personnel in Afghanistan.

The U.S. State Department said in an Aug. 20 statement that judge Kimberly Prost was sanctioned after authorizing an ICC investigation into potential alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity by U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan since 2003. The Appeals Chamber of the ICC decided unanimously to authorize the investigation in March 2020.

Prost previously served with the Canadian Department of Justice and the Chef de Cabinet for the president of the ICC for a two-year term, before being assigned as an ICC judge in 2018.

Officials said that, with input from the RCMP and West Kelowna Fire Rescue, they reassessed the organizer’s security plans and found risks “not appropriately mitigated.”

Feucht has faced pushback across Canada.

Several stops on his tour have been cancelled amid calls from local left-wing activist groups.

Last month, West Kelowna warned it had “increased concerns” about safety around the concert.

Feucht had not addressed West Kelowna’s decision directly, but wrote on social media that “It’s wild watching ‘Christian’ mayors across Canada cancel outdoor worship services ‘for safety reasons’ while allowing mass protests and pride events in their cities.”

Feucht had previously argued such cancellations will “backfire” as his concerts find other last minute venues.

Premier David Eby is among those who have criticized Feucht, saying he does not “agree with the message that he’s promoting.”

Local leftist groups, including the Kelowna Pride Society and Advocacy Canada, have urged municipalities to stop the shows, calling Feucht a “far-right” figure whose activism is harmful to the “2SLGBTQIA+” community.

Feucht also has supporters.

John Carpay of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms said earlier this month that governments cannot “pick and choose” who sings in public spaces based on viewpoint, and the Canadian Constitution Foundation has warned that cancelling the events could breach Charter rights.

The city did not say whether an alternative date or venue would be considered.

For now, the West Kelowna stop joins a growing list of Feucht concerts in Canada called off over “safety concerns” as debate over his message and the limits of free expression continues.

Han Chengxuan, a doctoral candidate from the Chinese city of Wuhan who sent multiple packages containing concealed biological materials, pleaded to three smuggling charges and to lying to U.S. customs officials, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan announced.

Han is studying at the College of Life Science and Technology in the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan and has co-authored two articles relating to the use of roundworms, known scientifically as C. elegans. She told federal agents that she arrived at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on a J1 visa in June, intending to start a one-year research project at a University of Michigan lab.

An adviser to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who voted in favor of a respiratory syncytial virus antibody for infants says new data that has come to light indicates that the vote was based on presentations that omitted crucial information.

“It appears that this decision was based on manipulated data analyses,” Dr. Robert Malone, a member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), said in a blog post on Aug. 20.

Malone and four other members of the panel in June voted to advise the CDC to recommend the antibody called clesrovimab for infants to try to prevent respiratory syncytial virus. Known as RSV, the virus typically causes mild symptoms such as a cold but can, in some cases, lead to severe problems and, according to the CDC, is a leading cause of infant hospitalization.

Two members voted to advise the CDC not to recommend clesrovimab.

The vote followed presentations by CDC epidemiologist Adam MacNeil and Dr. Matthew Daley, who works closely with the CDC and is a former member of ACIP.

MacNeil said in his presentation that there was no increased risk for seizures in infants in 2024 and early 2025 who received nirsevimab, the only antibody available to infants at the time, based on data from the CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink. Daley provided more information, summarizing the study of information from the data system. That included a finding that when splitting infants into two subgroups, aged zero to 37 days and 38 days to just younger than 8 months of age, there was not a statistically significant risk of seizures.

“These are truly remarkable products,” Dr. Cody Meissner, an ACIP member who studied them as part of a committee workgroup, said after the presentations and before the vote. “They are safe and they’re effective.”

Malone said before the vote that “concerning this product, it has been very actively debated internally and I’m satisfied that, given the short period of time we have to address this, that I’m comfortable that we have sufficient information.”

Retsef Levi, one of the no votes, said that he was voting no “based on the fact that I don’t feel this is ready to be administered to all healthy babies” and how he wanted to take a more precautionary approach.

The Trudeau-Carney government’s bloated bureaucracy keeps getting fatter — and taxpayers are footing the bill.

According to new access to information records obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), 146,786 federal bureaucrats made more than $100,000 last year, a staggering 33% jump in just one year.

“Taxpayers can’t afford to keep bankrolling a bloated government full of overpaid paper pushers,” said CTF federal director Franco Terrazzano. “The government needs to find savings and it should start by taking air out of its ballooning bureaucracy.”

The data show 39% of all federal employees are now on the six-figure gravy train, costing Canadians at least $18.9 billion in 2024. That doesn’t even include benefits or retroactive pay hikes that are still being negotiated.

“While homebuilders and municipalities are keen to respond, factors like the high development and building costs in Ontario, and substantial inventory are weighing on the initiation of new projects,” reads the Aug. 20 report by RBC economist Robert Hogue. “This raises concern about whether future housing stock can meet demand.”

The Federal Court of Appeal has rejected an application to cancel a cull order for a flock of ostriches in B.C. that were infected with avian flu.

The court denied the application by Universal Ostrich Farms for a judicial review of a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) order to cull about 400 birds at the farm.

The CFIA ordered the birds at the Edgewood, B.C. farm to be culled after 69 ostriches died in an avian flu outbreak on the farm in December 2024 and January 2025.

The farmers opposed the cull, saying their birds had immunity from the virus and were being used for research.

A Federal Court upheld the cull order in June, but the farm owners appealed the ruling. They had previously applied for a judicial review of the CFIA order, but it was denied.

The number of Canadian veterans experiencing homelessness has been on the decline in recent years, with numbers down by at least 17 percent over the past two years, according to a Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) memo.

Data shows that the number of homeless veterans has decreased from around 2,600 in 2019, to 2,000 in June of this year, according to a June 13 briefing note on veteran homelessness from the Government of Canada, which was first covered by Blacklock’s Reporter.

“The government is pursuing a coordinated, evidence-driven and collaborative strategy to eliminate veteran homelessness,” the briefing reads, noting that Canada has approximately 461,240 veterans.

The decrease in veteran homelessness was partly credited to the Veterans Emergency Fund, which offers quick, tax-free payments of up to $2,500 to eligible veterans for emergency needs such food, shelter, and clothing. The majority of grants issue a decision on an application within 48 hours.

The fund has provided around $1 million per year since 2018 and gave out $1.65 million to 842 veterans last year. Continue...

Minister of Children and Family Services Searle Turton said there was a “critical need” to help children who have been abused feel “safe and supported.”

Several broadcast and cultural groups say the United States is pressuring the Canadian government to do away with the Online Streaming Act and the Online News Act.

“We are aware that the U.S. is exerting pressure on the [federal government], and the cultural sector is undoubtedly on high alert,” said Marie-Julie Desrochers, executive director of the Coalition for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

Kevin Desjardins, president of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, which has supported both pieces of legislation, also said his group has heard about the United States putting pressure on Ottawa. Both Desrochers and Desjardins said they hope the Liberal government will keep the laws in place.

Last week, the U.S. State Department criticized Canada’s Online News Act in a human rights report. It said the legislation, which requires that Canadian news businesses be paid when their content appears on large digital media platforms, could be used to “discriminate against political speech or disfavored independent media outlets.”

In response to the legislation, Meta stopped allowing Canadian users of its platforms including Facebook and Instagram to post news, saying the cost of compliance with the Online News Act wasn’t worth it for the company.

The Canadian Association of Broadcasters says the Online News Act is an “important step towards recognizing the value of private broadcasters’ news content,” while the Coalition for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions says the Online Streaming Act is needed “to protect and promote the diversity of their cultural expressions.” Continue

RCMP say an Ontario truck driver accused of evading police for nine months has been arrested in a Manitoba crash that killed a woman and her eight-year-old daughter.

Navjeet Singh was taken into custody Thursday at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport by Peel Regional Police and officers with Canada Border Services Agency.

Mounties say he arrived in the country on an Ethiopian airline.

Singh, a resident of Brampton, Ont., was charged in November with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death as well as obstructing a peace officer.

Police allege Singh was driving a semi-trailer that failed to stop at a rural intersection west of Altona, Man., crashing into an SUV.

The 35-year-old mother and her daughter were killed, and Singh was sent to hospital and later released.

Police say Singh is to be escorted back to Manitoba in the coming days and will be remanded into custody.

“This has been an extremely tough time for the family. We thank everyone who put their concerns and comments out there — we all came together to ensure this apprehension was successful,” Cpl. Jamie Sokolosky with the Pembina Valley RCMP said in a statement Friday.

Alberta’s government says it will provide free COVID-19 immunizations for health care workers this fall, after it said most Albertans, including health care workers, would have to pay for it.

The province said health care workers would now be eligible for a free COVID-19 immunization in phase 1 of its two-phase rollout of the program.

“Offering the vaccine to health care workers helps protect vulnerable patients and maintain a strong workforce, ensuring the health system can continue delivering safe, effective care,” the government said in an Aug. 22 news release.

The government said it would also cover the cost of the vaccination for seniors, those 6 months of age and older with underlying medical conditions and compromised immune systems, and homeless individuals.

All other Albertans who want to get the vaccine will have to pay $100 and wait for phase 2 of the rollout if they want the vaccine, the government said.

The Health Sciences Association of Alberta said it was pleased the vaccines would be offered free to health care workers. It added that doses were being given out on a “fully voluntary basis.” Continue...

Housing starts increased in July, but it is not enough to meet demand, according to a report from Canada’s housing agency.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released housing stats for July on Aug. 18.

The data shows that total monthly seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of housing starts for all of Canada was up 4 percent in July (294,085 units) compared to June (283,523 units).

In a June 2025 report, the CMHC said that housing starts needed to double over the next 10 years.

“Canada needs to increase housing starts to around 430,000 to 480,000 units per year to restore affordability,” the report said.

A 12-year-old boy who escaped the vehicle of an alleged abductor in Alberta after he and a group of friends employed a “catch a predator” scheme was incredibly lucky, says a police child exploitation expert.

This appears to be the “very first” time minors have employed the scheme, popularized by NBC’s To Catch a Predator reality television series, said Staff Sgt. Mark Auger from the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s internet child exploitation unit.

“This could have been a horrible outcome,” Auger said Thursday.

“Any time you reach out to a random person, there’s risk of compromise just in a conversation. Then you elevate that to meeting them somewhere in public…. I think it’s a million to one that that child wasn’t hurt.”

The “risk (of losing control) was off the charts” for the 12-year-old, Auger said.

“Defending themselves in a moving vehicle against an adult could have been horrific.”

During a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital on Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney would not rule out putting Canadian troops on the ground in Ukraine as part of an eventual security guarantee against Russia.

Carney made the comments at a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following a bilateral meeting between the two.

When asked what kind of security guarantees Canada could provide to Ukraine, Carney said Ukraine’s own military must be supported but that more than that will be required.

“I would not exclude the presence of troops,” he said.

Carney said Canada doesn’t think it is “realistic” that Ukraine’s military alone would be enough for a security guarantee.

The Fire Marshal is on scene this morning investigating a major overnight fire and explosion at a home in northwest Georgetown.

Halton Hills firefighters were called to the house on Arborglen Drive around 4:20 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a fire in the garage that was quickly spreading to the rest of the house, with the garage doors already blown off by an explosion. It’s believed there were electric vehicles in the garage at the time.

Initial reports indicate that a neighbour used a ladder to help rescue four occupants before emergency crews arrived. They were transported to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Halton Regional Police say the fire is not considered suspicious, and there's no indication of criminal activity.

The fire also damaged two adjacent homes, and police say all occupants were evacuated safely.

Firefighters and police remain on scene.

The amount of time the vast majority of youth are spending on the internet far exceeds the daily recommended “screen time,” according to a new federal report.

The vast majority (89 to 96 percent) of youth in grades 6 to 10 exceed the recommended daily screen time of two hours, according to a report published by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) on July 23, which was first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

The PHAC report provided findings from the 2022 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study, which indicated that 42 percent of boys and 54 percent of girls in grades 6 to 8 reported having online contact with close friend(s) “almost all the time throughout the day.” Meanwhile, 57 percent of boys and 73 percent of girls in grades 9 and 10 reported the same.

Comparatively, around 52 percent of youth said they participate in team sports, around 20 percent said they are involved in church or other religious groups, and around 8 percent said they take part in community groups such as Scouts, Girl Guides, or cadets.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, youth were spending increased amounts of time on digital media including social media, video games, TV, and virtual learning,” the PHAC report says. “Higher levels of usage have been associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, inattention, irritability, and hyperactivity.”

The public health agency says some reports indicate that nearly 100 percent of adolescents have used the internet in the last three months and 92 percent regularly use social media, as frequent internet use has become “especially common in Canadian society.” Continue...

“This is rethinking Canada fit for the 21st century, at a time where our neighbour and friend decides to have a very different trade policy,” he said.

The minister added that as the world economy is “being restructured,” Canada needs to “diversify” its economy and have “one Canadian economy.”

“The tariff situation has been evolving, so the fact that we have a budget in October is helpful, because by that time, we have more certainty,” the minister said, adding that waiting to present the budget in October will allow the government to provide a “better picture” to Canadians.

In a post on his Telegram channel on Monday, the head of the Rovno regional council, Andrey Karaush, announced the introduction of masks at a major local hospital. Other medical facilities in the Western Ukrainian region will be considering mask mandates in the coming days, he added.

“Since the beginning of August, almost half a thousand cases of the disease have been officially confirmed in the region,” Karaush announced.

Several Telegram channels and media outlets have also reported that mask mandates were put in effect in several hospitals in Odessa Region, with visits allegedly restricted as well.

Prices for a variety of goods are expected to drop once the retaliatory tariffs are officially removed by the Canadian government in September, although it may take some time for the lower prices to work through the supply chain.

Ottawa slapped a surtax on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods in March in response to the 25 percent tariffs the White House imposed on Canada due to concerns about border security and drug trafficking. The March 3 order imposed a 25 percent tariff on 1,256 different types of goods of a wide variety, from food stuffs to firearms.

A Florida judge has put Brampton, Ont., resident Xiao Guang Pan on probation for 12 months and has ordered him deported back to Canada, according to Global News. Pan was charged earlier this year by the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida with three counts of using a drone to photograph defence installations and equipment at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Base (CCSFS) in Florida.

He later pleaded guilty to all three counts, according to a court document filed on June 18. His case comes amid heightened concerns about drone sightings at U.S. military bases and other sensitive sites.

Pan was born in China and moved to Canada in 2001, according to a biography posted by the Brampton Arts Organization. He is described as an “enthusiastic” drone photographer and videographer who previously worked at Best Buy for 18 years until his retirement in 2022.

Pan took nearly 250 drone photos and videos of “vital” military installations at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station between Jan. 5 and 7, according to the court document, which was signed by Pan. That space force base supports the United States’ space launch capabilities, and also hosts space launch complexes and U.S. Navy submarine wharfs.

Diageo, an alcoholic beverage company, says it will be closing its Amherstburg, Ont., facility and moving some of its operations to the United States.

The company said it will close the facility where it bottles spirits like Crown Royal in February 2026.

It said it will move its bottling operations for products aimed at U.S. customers to the United States, while its products for Canadians will move to its Quebec facility.

The president of Diageo’s North America supply said it was not an easy decision.

“This was a difficult decision, but one that is crucial to improving the efficiency and resiliency of our supply chain network,” Marsha McIntosh said.

A statement from the company said the change would “unlock additional productivity” and “increase resiliency and capacity,” adding it would help Diageo to meet demand across its markets. Continue...

Elon Musk has warned about the dangerous side effects contraceptive pills can have on the emotions and behavior of women.

The tech billionaire responded to a post about a new study showing severe side effects of hormonal contraceptives.

“The use of hormonal contraceptives by tens of millions of women could plausibly be having population-level effects on behaviour, including political behavior,” the post stated. “A new study shows that women who use hormonal contraceptives exhibit significantly stronger emotional responses than women who are naturally cycling and they also, interestingly, remember fewer details of negative events.”

Continuing, the post noted that a “study last year showed that hormonal contraceptives shrink the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, a region of the brain involved in fear processing and emotional control.”

“Read the warnings on the box of anything you’re taking,” Musk responded.

Ontario is removing interprovincial barriers for workers in regulated professions, allowing them greater mobility when searching for work across the country, the province said Monday.

The Labour Day announcement said the provincial government has signed 10 agreements with provinces and territories to remove barriers to let workers come to Ontario to find work in over 50 “in-demand” professions, including engineers, architects and electricians.

Canada’s six-month period of standing up to U.S. President Donald Trump with trade actions has mostly officially come to a close today.

Duties imposed on the United States in response to Trump’s initial tariffs of 25 percent on Canadian goods have been lifted effective Sept. 1.

As a result, over 1,200 different types of U.S. goods coming into Canada could drop in prices in the coming weeks or months, covering a wide range, from food stuffs to motorcycles, from kitchenware to apparel.

Trump had implemented his first tariffs against Canada and Mexico in March, accusing the two countries of being springboards into the United States for illegal drugs and immigrants.

In response, Ottawa placed a surtax on C$30 billion worth of U.S. goods, the first phase of matching tariffs on C$155 billion worth of U.S. imports, said to be aimed at maximizing the damage to the United States while minimizing the impacts domestically. This was still the objective as of early last month. “We have always said that we will apply tariffs where they have the maximum impact in the United States and a minimum impact in Canada,” Carney said on Aug. 5, echoing statements he had first made in March after winning the Liberal leadership race.
