A Russian strike using the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile system last week disabled a Ukrainian aviation plant in Lviv, which was repairing and servicing warplanes and producing long-range drones, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry said, citing several independent sources, that the attack successfully hit a facility which supported the operations of Ukrainian Soviet-era warplanes, including MiG-29 jets, as well as Western-supplied F-16s.

The plant also produced long- and medium-range strike drones that were “used for strikes against Russian civilian targets deep inside the territory of the Russian Federation,” officials said.

The ministry added that the strike hit production workshops, storage facilities holding finished drones, and infrastructure at the plant’s airfield. Officials also noted that the same attack involving Iskander and Kalibr missiles struck drone production facilities in Kiev. Eight people were arrested following a weekend protest and counter-protest in downtown Toronto during which participants hurled eggs, used toilet paper, and bags of urine at officers who were attempting to maintain order.

Toronto Police have laid 29 charges in connection with the ruckus that occurred after counter-protesters attended a Canada First “Stop Mass Immigration Rally” on Jan. 10.

Officers were at the demonstration in Nathan Phillips Square in the downtown core at 2 p.m. when tensions arose between the opposing factions, police said in a Jan. 11 press release.

Police did not name the groups involved in the demonstrations, but a counter-protest organized by Community Solidarity Toronto, a human rights coalition, was planned in the same location at 12:30 p.m.

The Toronto Sun reported the counter-protesters also included participants identifying as Antifa as well as some who have regularly taken part in the pro-Palestinian movement since the Hamas attack on Israel two years ago.

The officers’ efforts to maintain order were hindered when attendees became unruly, engaging in physical altercations with other protesters and with police, according to the press release. Continue...

Manitobans can now carry their health card on a phone as the province launches a digital option aimed at making health care faster, safer, and more convenient.

Premier Wab Kinew, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and Innovation Minister Mike Moroz announced the rollout Monday.

“Digital health cards put Manitobans in control of their own information, make it easier to access care, and support a safer, more responsive health system,” Kinew said, noting the province has moved from paper cards to plastic and now to digital.

The digital card works with MediNav, Manitoba’s online appointment system, allowing residents to book clinic visits and carry their health information all from a mobile device.

Asagwara said the government has eliminated previous delays in health card processing.

One of the three men accused of the 2022 murder of an elderly Abbotsford couple had arrived on an international student visa only three weeks before he and two other accomplices allegedly killed Arnold, 77, and Joanne, 76, De Jong, said the Crown prosecutor during the opening stages of their trial this Monday

The De Jongs were last seen by family the night before their alleged murder, the evening of May 8th, 2022. After Arnold's sister tried to contact them the next day and was unable to, the couple's son-in-law went to their house and discovered, upon entering, the body of Joanne.

When police officers arrived, the couple was swiftly identified as the victims of a homicide.

Joanne's cause of death was deemed to be blunt and sharp force trauma, with her being found in her bed in a pool of blood, hands and feet tied with rope.

Arnold was found in a separate room, also bound by the hands and feet on a bed, but with his face, including his mouth and nose, tightly covered with duct tape. His death was deemed to be caused by asphyxiation.

Co-Crown counsel Dorothy Tsui said that the victims apparently knew the three men, as they had hired a cleaning company owned by Abhijeet Singh, one of the accused, to clean their roof and eavestroughs in 2021 and 2022. Continue...

Canada’s former ambassador to Afghanistan has quietly acknowledged that Ottawa failed to rescue everyone stranded during the chaotic fall of Kabul, conceding in a newly released internal email that diplomats left thousands behind as they fled the city on a military aircraft that was not full.

Blacklock's Reporter says the admission by Reid Sirrs, disclosed through an Access To Information request, marks the first time the Department of Foreign Affairs has formally recognized that Canada’s evacuation effort collapsed as Taliban fighters swept into the Afghan capital in August 2021.

“August 15, 2021 was an emotionally charged day and I am sure will remain etched in our memories for years to come,” Sirrs wrote in an August 14, 2024 email sent to 14 fellow diplomats.

He acknowledged intense criticism at the time over “the pace of our evacuation” and mounting public scrutiny of the federal government’s response.

Sirrs attempted to frame the withdrawal as the product of exhaustion and pressure, noting that many members of the diplomatic team had served multiple tours in Kabul under punishing conditions.

He cited long work weeks, separation from family, and relentless stress in one of Canada’s most dangerous postings.

“We were also blessed with a strong sense of community and camaraderie which I believe helped us get through some of the darker moments,” Sirrs wrote, without explaining what those moments entailed.

In the closing lines of the email, Sirrs offered the bluntest assessment yet of the evacuation’s outcome.

“We may not have been able to help everyone but we certainly did make a difference in the lives of many,” he wrote.

“Tomorrow is another day.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney oversaw the signing of a new Canada–China energy co-operation agreement in Beijing on Thursday, marking the start of ministerial-level talks after nearly a decade of strained relations, but without any resolution to ongoing trade tariffs.

The memorandum of understanding, signed by Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, commits Canada and China to expanded dialogue on clean and conventional energy, including oil and gas development, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and emissions reduction.

The agreement does not include commitments for China to purchase additional Canadian petroleum or LNG.

Nor did it address Chinese tariffs on Canadian pork, canola, and seafood, which remain a key pressure point for Ottawa during Carney’s first official visit to China since becoming prime minister.

The first new Albertan oil sands project in eight years is now operational three and a half hours north of Edmonton, near Lac la Biche.

The $1.1-billion project, which is called the Blackrod SAGD, which stands for steam-assisted gravity drainage, is expected to produce 30,000 barrels of oil per day.

This would represent a close to doubling of Blackrod's current production of 45,000 barrels per day.

This is a brand-new facility in a location that has that has never had any large-scale oil extraction operations.

This is the first phase of the Blackrod oil sands project, which its owner, International Petroleum Corp. (IPC), sees as the beginning of a transformative new project for the Albertan oil sands industry.

“We very much believe in future phase expansions,” IPC CEO William Lundin said during last year's Q1 report.

Federal bureaucrats are leaning on the CBC to help steer public attitudes and reinforce national unity, according to internal Heritage Department briefing notes warning that many Canadians are tuning out official government messaging.

Blacklock's Reporter says the September 24 document says Ottawa is concerned parts of the population remain disengaged despite what it calls a resurgence of civic pride linked to tensions with the United States.

While officials claim pride in Canadian sovereignty has grown over the past year, the note cautions that “worrying trends” persist.

The briefing, titled Fostering Canadian Identity To Strengthen Our Sovereignty And Social Cohesion, points to alleged foreign state efforts to deepen social division.

It cites disinformation campaigns, the spread of polarizing material on social media, and what it describes as an overreliance on foreign-owned platforms as threats to Canada’s “information sovereignty.”

“Canada faces a series of crises including threats to our sovereignty and economy that may impact our national identity,” the note says, adding that polarization, declining trust in institutions and social fragmentation could weaken both economic resilience and social cohesion.

To counter those trends, federal managers describe the CBC as a key vehicle for promoting approved themes. Continue...

Coastal First Nations is an activist group endorsed by just eight of the more than 70 First Nations on the B.C. coast

This week, Prime Minister Mark Carney flew to B.C. for a meeting with “Coastal First Nations,” crediting them as ancient guardians of the Pacific Coast.

“Coastal First Nations have stewarded the waters of the B.C. North Coast from time immemorial,” he wrote in a statement.

But Carney didn’t meet with a governing body representing the more than 100 First Nations on the B.C. coast. In fact, he didn’t meet with an Indigenous governing body of any kind.

Carney met with an anti-pipeline non-profit that has done business under the name “Coastal First Nations” since 2002. Prior to that, it was called Turning Point, and operated out of the offices of the David Suzuki Foundation.

In fact, the group’s last major event before meeting Carney was a gala to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Coastal First Nations isn’t even the name on its registration documents. If Carney had used their official moniker, his statement would have read, “The Great Bear Initiative Society has stewarded the waters of the B.C. North Coast from time immemorial.”

But the B.C. coast is home to one of the densest collections of First Nations governments in the entire country.

Of the 600 officially recognized First Nations bands in Canada, more than a tenth of them are located on the edges of the Pacific Ocean.

According to a map of First Nations communities compiled by the B.C. Assembly of First Nations, there are 72 First Nations whose reserve land is on the coast.

But Coastal First Nations has ties to just eight of those communities, representing a total of 11,236 members as of the last count by the B.C. government.

For context, in the last census, B.C. had 290,210 Indigenous people, of whom 180,085 identified as First Nations.

In short, Coastal First Nations is endorsed by just 10 per cent of the First Nations bands who could accurately call themselves Coastal First Nations. And at best, they represent just 6.2 per cent of the province’s total First Nations population. Continue...

A Saskatchewan Court of King’s Bench judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by environmental advocacy groups and private citizens seeking to block the province’s plan to extend the life of coal-fired power plants, ruling that courts are not the proper forum for deciding environmental or energy policy.

In a January 12 decision, Justice R.S. Smith struck the entire application filed by Citizens for Public Justice, the Saskatchewan Environmental Society, and several individual applicants, Kiké Dueck, a minor represented by litigation guardian Kris Dueck, along with Sherry Olson and Matthew Wiens, who asked the court to overturn the Saskatchewan government’s coal decision.

The application targeted a June 18, 2025, letter from Crown Investments Minister Jeremy Harrison to SaskPower employees announcing the government’s decision to life-extend two coal-powered generating stations.

The province says the move is necessary to maintain reliable and affordable electricity while Saskatchewan transitions toward nuclear baseload power through small modular reactors.

The applicants argued the decision increased greenhouse gas emissions and should be quashed through judicial review, claiming it was unreasonable, unlawful, and contrary to climate obligations.
