Moscow responds to Zelensky’s Victory Day threats

The Ukrainian leader has hit a new low and is now threatening WW2 veterans, Maria Zakharova says

Vladimir Zelensky’s refusal to join Russia in observing a 72-hour ceasefire to mark the Victory Day celebrationsexposes Kiev’s “neo-Nazi essence” and amounts to a threat by an “international-level terrorist,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian leader reiterated his refusal to accept Moscow’s proposal for a three-day ceasefire starting May 8 and continuing through the World War II Victory Day celebrations, dismissing it as a “theatrical production.” Zelensky also appeared to threaten the world leaders expected to take part in the May 9 events in Moscow, stating that Kiev cannot guarantee their safety.

Zelensky’s remarks “once again prove the neo-Nazi nature of the Kiev regime, which has turned into a terrorist cell,” Zakharova said in a statement.

“Today [Zelensky] hit a new low: now he is threatening the physical safety of veterans who will come to parades and ceremonial events on that sacred day,” she said.

“After every terrorist attack on Russian territory, the Kiev regime, its security services, and Zelensky personally boast that it was their doing and that it will continue to be like this. Therefore, the phrase that he ‘does not guarantee security on May 9 on Russian territory,’ since this is not his area of responsibility, is, of course, a direct threat,” Zakharova stressed.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov offered a similar take on Zelensky’s remarks, stating the proposed ceasefire is a “test” for Kiev, and the apparent refusal to join it “clearly shows that neo-Nazism is the ideological basis of the contemporary Kiev regime.”

The 72-hour ceasefire was announced unilaterally by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. The president ordered the suspension of all military action against Ukraine’s forces from midnight on May 7 to midnight on May 10 and urged Kiev to join the truce. Zelensky and other top Ukrainian officials, however, dismissed the proposal as a “manipulation attempt,” demanding an immediate 30-day ceasefire instead.

In March, Russia and Ukraine both agreed to a US-brokered 30-day partial ceasefire focused on halting strikes on energy infrastructure. Kiev, however, violated the truce on numerous occasions, according to the Russian military.

The Victory Day truce follows a similar unilaterally announced pause during Easter weekend in April that ended up being only partially successful. While a certain lull in the hostilities was observed,Kiev violated the truce more than 3,900 times, according to estimates by the Russian Defense Ministry.

Slovak PM pledges to defy ‘unacceptable’ Zelensky threats

Robert Fico has called Ukraine’s warnings “ridiculous” and reiterated his decision to visit Moscow for the Victory Day events

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has confirmed he will attend Russia’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, dismissing warnings by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky of potential security risks as “ridiculous.”

The May 9 parade in Moscow will mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The Kremlin has extended invitations to the event to the leaders of Serbia, Slovakia, China, India, and Brazil, among others.

In April, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a unilateral 72-hour ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict to coincide with the Victory Day celebrations. Zelensky rejected the offer, labeling it a “theatrical performance” and advocated for a more substantial, unconditional 30-day ceasefire. Russian officials argue that a new temporary truce would simply allow Kiev to regroup and rearm.

Earlier this week Zelensky urged foreign leaders to avoid visiting Moscow, citing potential security risks. Russian officials accused Zelensky of endangering the safety of civilians attending the May 9 events. Fico, however, stated that the threats issued by Kiev would not deter him from participation in the commemoration.

“In my opinion, it’s ridiculous. I reject such threats,” Fico said at a press conference on Sunday. “I will go to the celebrations of the 80th anniversary [of Victory Day in Moscow].”

Fico claimed Zelensky was effectively warning invited leaders not to attend, with the veiled threat that Ukraine might retaliate in some way. “Well, celebrate, we might throw you a drone or something like that. These are unacceptable things for me,” he said.

Referring to Zelensky’s claim that Kiev could not guarantee the security of attending leaders, Fico responded: “If Zelensky thinks that his cries will prevent foreign delegations from coming there, it is a huge mistake. Ensuring the security of participants [in the celebrations] is the responsibility of the Russian Federation,” said the Slovak prime minister.

The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, warned in April that the bloc does not want any member or candidate states attending. During a meeting last month with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who earlier pledged to attend, EC Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos reportedly cautioned that his attendance would be held against Serbia in its bid to join the EU.

Fico recommended “Kallas and others to deal with more serious problems than whether I will go or not to the celebration of the 80th anniversary.”

Newly released documents reveal thatthe Central Intelligence Agency has maintained an active program of espionage against Germany in the post-Cold War era, and experts say that Germany reciprocates the ‘favor’. According to an article in the latest issue of German newsmagazine Focus, the US intelligence community, led by the CIA, has been keeping tabs on Germany’s intelligence agencies since the 1950s, and continues to do so today. The magazine’s editors say they are in possession of internal government documents, which describe constant CIA monitoring on the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany’s main external intelligence agency. The CIA’s spying extends to Germany’s counterintelligence agency, known as the Federal Office for Protection of the Constitution (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz). CIA operations against the Office have reportedly included the interception of telephone calls, some of which involved high-level conversations between German and British or French intelligence officials. Focus claims that CIA spying against the BND actually intensified following German reunification in 1990, as the American agency kept tabs on German intelligence officers with former Nazi or communist past. According to one report, the CIA was able to verify that at least two BND officers with service in the Nazi SS had joined a NATO sabotage unit.The magazine spoke to an unnamed former BND counterintelligence officer, who said he was not in the least surprised by the revelations. Commenting yesterday on the Focus report, Washington-based reporter Jeff Stein argued that a little friendly spying is to be expected among allied intelligence services. The veteran intelligence correspondent spoke to an unnamed former CIA officer, who told him that the espionage between Washington and Berlin has not been “a one-way street” —the BND also spies on the CIA and other American intelligence agencies. Stein notes that Germany “has always fielded a robust team of agents to keep track of American, as well as other foreign spies running around in their backyard”. Moreover, he says, while American and German agencies tend to cooperate on some levels, they still tend to keep “secrets from each other”. Why, then, have no German spies been arrested by the FBI and deported from the United States, or vice-versa? Because, he says, “among friends, some things are best handled discreetly”.

The United Nations could become unable to pay its staff and suppliers by September and its peacekeepers by mid-2025, following an outsized projected deficit anda leaked White House proposal to end funding for the intergovernmental body, according to reports.

The U.N.’s $200 million deficit in 2024 is measlycompared to the $1.1 billion deficit the organization is projected to incur at the end of 2025, barring any budget cuts, according to The Economist. The deficit reportedly will hobble the organization’s ability to pay salaries and suppliers by September.

The U.N. is billed to inform its member states Saturday that its $3.7 billion budget intended to help it avoid default had already been slashed by 17%, according to the outlet.The U.N. reportedly will pause hiring new staff because of the cuts. U.N. peacekeepers risk becoming unpaid by mid-2025, Secretary-General António Guterresreportedly warned in February.

Stringent budget rules and defaulting member states have left the U.N. cash strapped. A leaked Trump administrationmemo proposing to stop the U.S. from making mandatory contributions to the U.N. could bankrupt the body, according to the outlet.

The leaked April memo proposed an end toU.S. funding of the U.N. and its peacekeeping missions, as well as NATO and 20 other organizations. Also proposed were a 54% cut in U.S. humanitarian aid and a 55% cut in global health funding, according to the Washington Post. Congressional approval over the proposal reportedly remains to be seen.

President DonaldTrump also signed an executive orderFeb. 4 to withdraw U.S. membership of the U.N.and review the nation’s involvement in various international organizations.

U.N. mandatory dues — apportioned to member states based on the relative sizes of their economies — sustain the U.N.’s core functions, including General Assembly meetings, peacekeeping and human-rights monitoring, The Economist reported.

Late payments by some member states and shirking by others contributed to the funding crisis.Only 49 out of the U.N.’s 193 member states paid their mandatory dues on time in 2025.

The world’s two largest economies — the U.S. and China — are also the U.N.’s two largest contributors,with each contributing about 20% of the organization’s overall funding.

China, however, has begun to fall behind on payments, The Economist reported.

It was a tough week for the Democrats. They started off April with all kinds of hope. But by the end of the month, those hopes had mostly crumbled into ash.

Why? Because, infuriatingly, the U.S. economy was still intact.

I won’t lie: Even I found the initial response to President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs disorienting. Anybody who says they didn’t is either lying or keeps all their wealth as gold coins stashed in a safe. The S&P 500 had its worst week since the Covid lockdowns and then dropped even more the following Monday.The screaming from Wall Street was apocalyptic.

But then … no apocalypse happened. The president adjusted his tariff strategy on the fly, focused his ire on China, and signaled to the rest of America’s trading partners that he was ready to make deals. Foreign partners showed interest in negotiating in hopes of securing access to the greatest market in the world. Companies started to adapt instead of just crying out in terror. Cooler heads prevailed as capital and creativity began following Trump’s incentives.

And so, April ended and May began with the stock market above where it was a month ago and with as job report far better than Wall Street expected. The sky wasn’t falling.

=And the left didn’t take it well.

Just days ago, Politico ran the headline “Democrats look to Trump’s poor economic numbers with anxious optimism.”The Washington Post recently reported on “glimmers of hope” among Iowa Democrats premised on a crashing economy from Trump’s tariffs.

The Democrats right now don’t have a compelling alternative vision for America. What they have is hope that America crashes and burns, and they can smoothly reclaim control over the ashes.

For Democrats, this is all well and good. If you need proof, just look at the party’s hopelessly dysfunctional cities and states. For Democrats, economic disaster is a good thing as long as it is a vehicle to get and keep power. While conservatives cite Florida and Texas as their crown jewels, for being states that build and attract new residents, Democrats see California as theirs: A state so dysfunctional that huge swaths of middle-classresidents have fled, letting the state become a perpetual Democrat fiefdom.

For conservatives, economic success is a goal, because it enriches the populace. For the left, economic success or failure is beside the point. The goal is power. And if failure will bring power better than success, then so be it.

There is another factor driving the left’s hope for a crash.The great animating force of left-wing politics, dating back close to two and a half centuries at this point, is resentment. It’s the zero-sum view that if one person has something, it can only be because they stole it or otherwise exploited somebody to get it.This is why, from the French Revolution to the Bolsheviks to the socialists of today, every left-wing regime has cared more about tearing down those at the top than lifting those at the bottom.

The left never sees wealth as the product of value creation, but as a choice rooted in who society picks as winners and losers — and they are perpetually angry that the “wrong” winners are being picked. Just as they see American history as tainted by racism and Jim Crow, they see present-day America as tainted by its failure to elect Democrats. Poverty and misery seem to the leftist mind as just deserts for a society deserving of condemnation.

But for most leftists, the real problem with Trump’s success, which is really justAmerica’s success, is that it’s a nagging, incessant proof point that their unending hate for the president and his supporters might ultimately be misplaced. To admit he’s right about the economy or any other issue is to bring their entire worldview into question, which brings into question their entire identity as progressives.And to question one’s identity is simply too consequential, inconvenient, and weighty for most human beings to consider.

America’s success under President Trump is salt in the wounds of every Trump-hating progressivewho’s staked their last decade of existence upon defeating him.Hating Trump is far more comforting a drug than loving the country he was elected to lead.

In a significant legal victory for the Trump administration, theU.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has granted a stay on a lower court's orderthat had mandated the reinstatement of over 1,000 Voice of America (VOA) employees and the resumption of full broadcasting operations.

"This is a huge victory for President Trump and his Article II powers granted in the United States Constitution.It's also a victory for US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) and VOA," Kari Lake, a USAGM senior advisor to the Trump administration, told Fox News Digital following the court's decision Saturday.

The decision allows the administration to proceed with its efforts to restructure USAGM and its affiliated broadcasters.

"We are eager to accomplish President Trump's America First agenda which has always been to modernize and make our government efficient while cutting waste, fraud, and abuse," Lake said.

"Now that we have a favorable ruling in the appeals court, we look forward to accomplishing the plan we've always had; to bring VOA into the 21st century."

The appeals court's 2-1 ruling Saturday emphasized the judiciary's deference to executive authority in matters concerning federal employment and contractual decisions.

The court noted that thedistrict court likely lacked jurisdiction to interfere with the administration's personnel actionsand funding decisions, particularly regarding grant agreements with non-federal entities like Radio Free Asia and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks.

This follows Trump's March 14 executive order (EO), which aimed to dismantle USAGM operations.

"Voice of America has been out of step with America for years. It serves as the Voice for Radical America and has pushed divisive propaganda for years now," a senior White House official told Fox News Digital at the time.

The order led to the administrative leave of approximately 1,300 VOA employees and the termination of numerous contracts, effectively pausing the broadcaster's activities for the first time in its 83-year history.

"Unfortunately, the frivolous litigation actually stalled the ability to streamline archaic practices and redundant programs at VOA," Lake said. "The use of lawfare hurt the agency and its employees more than it helped."

Fox News contributor, legal analyst and constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley also shared news of the ruling on X, posting, "The D.C. Circuit just issued a major ruling in favor of the Trump Administration that lifted a stay on the Administration's decision to terminate contracts and positions at Voice of America."

Saturday's decision came as VOA employees reportedly had access restored to their computers on Friday after federal Judge Royce Lamberth's April 22 ruling in favor of the plaintiff's request for a preliminary injunction against Trump's EO, which the administration promptly appealed.

During a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, Rubio was asked if he’d requested that El Salvador return a man the Justice Department has admitted was mistakenly deported.

“I would never tell you that. And you know who else I’ll never tell? A judge,” Rubio replied. “The conduct of our foreign policy belongs to the president of the United States and the executive branch, not some judge.”

With Rubio expected to serve as both secretary of State and national security adviser for at least six months and likely longer, current and former State officials warned that it’s hard to do both jobs well.

Some wondered if it meant both positions would be watered down. They also questioned how Rubio would balance the demands of travel for the secretary of State with the national security adviser’s tendency to stay by the president’s side while overseeing the National Security Council.

“It’s hard to be in two places at once,” a former senior diplomat said.

There’s a bit of cockiness in some corners at the State Department, which has seen its power eroded over the decades as the NSC and Pentagon have outmaneuvered it.

“What’s the NSC? A new bureau of State?” one State official quipped.

Serving as secretary of State and national security adviser didn’t always go well for the only other person who’s done it, diplomat Henry Kissinger. During that 1970s stint, Kissinger faced questions about whether he manipulated decision-making to favor State and himself.

“People at the Defense Department and other agencies that had roles in the national security process thought that it was unfair that everything was biased in Kissinger’s favor because he held two chairs,” said John Bolton, a first-term Trump national security adviser who has fallen out with the president. “That was one reason why pressure grew on [President Gerald] Ford, ultimately, to separate them and go back to the regular order.”

Living up to its Star Wars' namesake, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket took flight again, delivering 29 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit (LEO) on Sunday, May 4th, 2025 — Star Wars Day.

The launch occurred at 4:54 a.m. EDT (0854 GMT) from Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

About 8.5 minutes later, the rocket's first stage came back to Earth, acing its touchdown on the SpaceX drone ship "A Shortfall of Gravitas."

It was the 20th launch and landing for this particular booster, according to a company mission description.

With 29 Starlink satellites on board, this was the largest number of the broadband-providing spacecraft on one Falcon 9 launch to date.

SpaceX has now launched nearly 8,500 Starlink satellites to date, more than 7,300 of which remain operational in LEO, according to satellite tracker and astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell.

JD Vance’s close friend from Canada is taking back his open invite for the vice president to visit. Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, who became close with Vance at Yale Law School 15 years ago, said it would not be “constructive” for the VP to visit his Toronto-area district right now given the Trump administration’s provocations toward Canada.

“Right now we have strong political disagreements, and that’s kind of how it is,” he said. It’s a reversal from how he felt in December, when he accepted an invitation to dine with Vance in Arlington, Virginia.

Jivani was also in Washington for Inauguration Day. “They need to probably reconsider some of their rhetoric and their policy before coming to Canada,” Jivani said to POLITICO.

“Our country should deserve more respect before being able to welcome them.” Jivani represents a suburban and rural area that employs thousands of auto workers at a GM plant that makes the Chevrolet Silverado.

People in the community are anxious about tariffs on the auto sector and President Donald Trump’s annexation threats, Jivani said. “We haven’t talked in a while,” Jivani said when asked about the status of the friendship.

“He’s busy, I’m busy. It’s just the nature of the work that we do. Certainly, the way they’ve talked about Canada has been a problem for me personally. I’m a proud Canadian.

I’m focused on my community, and we’ll see what happens next.” Jivani was reelected in Canada’s federal election on Monday, which saw the Liberal Party return to power under a minority government.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre lost his seat, and there is open debate about his future at the helm. Jivani said he’s not eyeing the job. “Pierre Poilievre is our leader, and I’m focused on how we get ready for the next election,” he said.

Throughout the five-week campaign, Jivani had to contend with Liberal attacks that highlighted his friendship with the vice president, while accusing him of turning his back on the country, he said.

“They created commercials about me and JD being friends. They doctored pictures of us and dropped them in mailboxes in my riding,” Jivani said.

“The misrepresentation of who I am, what I believe in, the misrepresentation of my commitment to this country, that stuff, was very, very frustrating.”

Having to prove he was country above everything else was tough, Jivani said, but it resulted in a much more meaningful win. This will be his second term as MP. “People were saying: We know you, we got you, we see who you are and we’re choosing you to go and fight for us,” he said.

Jovani said he’s looking forward to getting back to Ottawa when the House returns to advocate for his community on issues related to cost of living, housing and the trade war. While his friendship with Vance has drifted, Jivani is hopeful that soon enough they’ll be back to talking football.

“We were friends before politics, we will be friends after politics,” he said. “This is a guy that I played fantasy football with for the last 15 years. He’s now the vice president and that’s a unique situation.”

But like a lot of friends, Jivani said, they’ve had political disagreements the entire time. “It’s just the nature of having a friend in a situation like this. I kind of just acknowledge that we’re in different places, we have different priorities.

He does his thing, I do my thing. And when this is all over, I’m sure we’ll talk again.”

An Army helicopter flying in the D.C. airspace Thursday forced two commercial passenger jets inbound to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to perform go-around maneuvers— roughly three months after the airport was the site of the nation’s worst aviation fatality in more than two decades.

The Federal Aviation Administration sent out a notice about the incidents on Friday. Reagan National airport has been in the spotlight ever since the catastrophic crash of an Army Black Hawk helicopter and a regional passenger jet killed 67 people in January and set off a wave of investigations.

According to the email written Friday by Chris Senn, FAA’s assistant administrator for government and industry affairs, obtained by POLITICO, the Army helicopter — also aBlack Hawk — “took a scenic route around the Pentagon versus proceeding directlyfrom the west to the heliport” on Thursday,prompting controllers to call for two go-arounds.

While go-arounds are a typical maneuver for flights inbound to Reagan National given the congestion at the busy airport,Senn classified the incidents in the email as “loss of separation” events, which are a breach of the minimum separation standards for aircraft in the same airspace.

Senn added the aircraft “were not within the restricted mixed traffic area” of the airport,but the FAA will investigate whether the Army was in violation of its flight approvals. A person familiar with the email, who was granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, confirmed its authenticity.

In a statement, the FAA on Friday said a “priority transport” inbound for the Pentagon’s helipadmade both a Delta Air Lines flight and a Republic Airways flight perform go-arounds. The agency said it will investigate the incident, which happened around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Delta said it would cooperate with the FAA on its investigation. A spokesperson for Republic could not be reached. The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating. Both flights were on final approach.The closest proximity between the Delta plane and helicopter was less than a mile and 400 feet.As the Black Hawk continued flying, the proximity between the Republic flight and the helicopter then grew closer — roughly 0.4 miles and 200 feet apart, according to the email.

Separately, there was another underlying issue:Controllers didn’t see the Black Hawk’s tracking position in real-time on their radar screens. Senn said the helicopter’s radar track “inadvertently floated and jumped to a different location on the controller feed after being unresponsive for a couple seconds.”

The jump happened when the Republic flight was 1.7 miles away from the runway.At the time of the go-arounds, the control tower had one supervisor performing direct operational oversight, four certified professional controllers, or top-level controllers capable of performing all functions of a controller at their facility, plus one certified professional controller trainee receiving on the job training, Senn said.

The Army was broadcasting via a transponder using its Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast technology, which provides air traffic controllers with more detailed information about an aircraft’s altitude, speed and location.

ADS-B has come under increased scrutiny since the January crash as investigators believe the broadcast was turned off. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. At the time of the accident in January, the Army’s policy was to restrict turning on ADS-B for sensitive or classified missions with commander approval, according to Brig. Gen. Matthew Braman, who testified in March during a Senate aviation subpanel hearing into the crash.

Lawmakers have called the policy inconsistent and unacceptable. Responding to Thursday’s incident, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), ranking member of the Commerce Committee, said the Black Hawk involved in Thursday’s incident came from the same Army Aviation brigade as the helicopter involved in the fatal collision earlier this year.

“It is outrageous that only three months after an Army Black Hawk helicopter tragically collided with a passenger jet,the same Army brigade again flew a helicopter too close to passenger jets on final approach” at the airport, she said in a statement, and called on the Pentagon and the FAA “to give our airspace the security and safety attention it deserves.”

“That’s no moon. It’s a space station.”

So were the words uttered by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi when he gazed upon the doomsday weapon, the Death Star, in 1977’s “Star Wars,” later subtitled “Episode IV: A New Hope.”

The spherical “technological terror,” as Darth Vader called it, is a gray, tiled defense system with trenches and a massive dish with a laser capable of destroying a planet.

Although the Death Star appeared a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, it resembles something seen in nature — within the solar system.

First discovered by astronomer William Herschel in 1789, Mimas is one of the many moons orbiting Saturn, according to NASA.

It was not until 1980, when the spacecrafts Voyager I and II, and the craft Cassini, all took images of Saturn’s smallest, innermost moon.

Besides their lack of color and textured appearances, there’s a massive crater on Mimas that makes the space object resemble the Death Star.

The Herschel Crater is 80 miles across, caused by an impact that could have broken Mimas apart, NASA stated.

Mimas can be seen from Earth using a powerful telescope.

While Mimas and the Death Star resemble each other, there’s one big difference. The moon is 400 kilometers, or 250 miles, in diameter, according to EarthSky.

The Galactic Empire’s superweapon is much smaller at 160 kilometers, or 100 miles, in diameter, according to the fan website Wookieepedia.

Recent studies of the moon also present a dichotomy with its fictional “twin.”

While the Death Star was a harbinger of destruction, Mimas could harbor life, BBC Sky at Night reported in 2024. A subsurface ocean may have formed in the last 25 million years.

“This is possibly the youngest place in the solar system that could be habitable,” French astronomer Valéry Lainey, whose team discovered the moon’s ocean in February 2024, told the BBC magazine.

The White House budget calls for slashing $17 billion in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), citing the agency's failure to properly monitor risky gain-of-function research it funded at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV)—where the COVID-19 pandemic plausibly originated.

"While evidence of the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic leaking from a laboratory is now confirmed by several intelligence agencies, the NIH's inability to prove that its grants to the Wuhan Institute of Virology were not complicit in such a possible leak, or get data and hold recipients of Federal funding accountable is evidence that NIH has grown too big and unfocused," reads the budget summary released on Friday.

Shortly after President Donald Trump's inauguration, the CIA produced a new assessment saying that the agency now favors a lab leak explanation of the pandemic's origins.

The FBI and the Energy Department have also said theyfavor the lab leak theory, as does Germany's intelligence agency.

NIH has come under intense scrutiny for lax oversight of gain-of-function research it funded at the WIV via its grantee, the nonprofit EcoHealth Alliance.

In the years preceding the pandemic, NIH continued funding EcoHealth's gain-of-function research on coronaviruses, despite White House policies either freezing funding for that type of work or requiring it to undergo more serious scrutiny. It also failed to follow up with EcoHealth when it missed a deadline to submit progress reports on its work at WIV on the eve of the pandemic.

Lab leak proponents point to this work, which involved creating viruses with enhanced potential to infect human cells, as likely seeding the creation of the pandemic at the WIV.

The Biden administration suspended EcoHealth Alliance, and its now-former president Peter Daszak from receiving federal funding in 2024, citing its lax oversight of its subgrantees in Wuhan.

In its last days in office, the Biden administration formally debarred EcoHealth and Daszak from receiving federal funds for the next five years.

Gain-of-function research on pandemic pathogens is a tiny portion of NIH's budget. EcoHealth's grant was just $3 million, and only a portion of that was spent on its controversial work at WIV.

Trump's proposed cuts to NIH are clearly part of a larger agenda to whittle the agency down in size. The budget document also criticizes NIH for funding "radical gender ideology."

White House budget documents are ultimately a political statement, and it's typical that few of the proposed cuts they include are passed by Congress.

It would be notable if Congress declined to take up Trump on his proposed NIH cuts, given the administration's lab leak justification for the cuts.

The final report from the Republican majority on the House subcommittee tasked with investigating the origins of COVID-19 concluded that the pandemic likely resulted from a lab incident.

It would be remarkable if, after coming to that conclusion, House Republicans continued to fund NIH at existing levels without additional oversight of gain-of-function research on pandemic pathogens.

The Trump administration is reportedly going to be issuing a freeze on federal gain-of-function research funding imminently. Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) also has reintroduced a bill to more tightly regulate funding of such research.

Paul's bill passed out of the Senate's Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee in the last Congress.

Infrasound Technology Proves Critical for Planetary Defense Against Threats from Outer Space

A Sandia Labs scientist specializing in tracking the angle of objects entering Earth’s atmosphere has demonstrated how an existing network of infrasound technology-based sensors designed to detect potential nuclear weapon tests can be adapted for planetary defense.

The novel use of this technology can provide a defense against potential dangers from outer space, including discarded tools, defunct satellites, and other pieces of space junk currently encircling the planet.

With future missions expected to add to the volume of hazardous material that may cause damage when falling back to Earth, and diplomatic efforts to solve the problem still ongoing, using infrasound technology to determine where and when an object is likely to impact could prove increasingly valuable.

This technology could also protect against natural objects like falling meteors or potentially against objects launched intentionally at a ground target in a future space war.

How Infrasound Technology Aids Planetary Defense Against Incoming Space Objects

In an email to The Debrief, Sandia Labs scientists Elizabeth Silber explained how the infrasound technology behind the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) worldwide sensor network works.

“The CTBTO’s worldwide network of infrasound sensors is designed to detect minute disturbances in the atmosphere, including signals from events occurring thousands of kilometers away,” Silber explained.

“These sensors are highly sensitive by design. Their effectiveness lies in their ability to register very subtle atmospheric pressure changes caused by distant, impulsive sources.”

In the same email, Silber said that her curiosity was initially piqued by the fact that the CTBTO network and NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) database would often identify slightly different locations for a bolide, or a meteor exploding as it enters the atmosphere.

Described by Silber as “one of the most important existing resources” for studying these types of events, NASA’s CNEOS database contains records of around 1,000 atmospheric events detected by U.S. government space-based sensors.

Because the two systems use different technologies, Silber wondered if the data captured by the infrasound technology-based sensors could offer additional information that was confusing the NASA network.

Specifically, the Sandia Labs scientists said she looked at how a fireball’s path through the atmosphere, particularly the object’s angle of entry, might explain the mismatched readings.

“Shallow entries travel longer distances and can send out sound from many points along the way, which can throw off the apparent direction of the signal by several degrees,” Silber told The Debrief. “Steeper entries are much more straightforward.”

A press release announcing the research said that using this data to pinpoint potential impact locations more accurately is critical and could play a vital role in planetary defense.

“If you don’t know where something is going, then you have a hard time preparing for it,” the release explained.

Predicting the Path of Entry for Space Objects

Silber developed a customized computer model to test the hypothesis to show how these different atmospheric entry trajectories affect what the infrasound systems “see.”

Called BIBEX-M, or the Bolide Infrasound Back-Azimuth Explorer Model, Silber says her customized model uses the subtle variances in sound detected by the CTBTO sensors to calculate the likeliest path of meteors, pieces of space debris, or even planned reentry events “which follow similar extended paths.”

“Understanding this effect helps us better locate where these events happen, and makes global monitoring more accurate,” she explained.

In a published study detailing the findings, Silber said objects entering the atmosphere at angles above 60 degrees were the most likely to give different locations depending on the sensors used to track them.

Because infrasound technology tracks signals over time, they are uniquely equipped to calculate entry angles and locations.

On April 16, three Guardians assigned to the Vosler Academy—Sgt. Benjamin Kremer, Tech. Sgt. Robert Camblin, and Master Sgt. Jessica Morgan—were en route to lunch near Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, when they encountered a vehicle that had flipped onto its roof.

Without hesitation, the Guardians exited their vehicle and began rendering aid to the driver, who was trapped inside and suffering from a serious arm injury.

Despite signs of shock, the team worked quickly to keep the driver calm and stabilize the injury using improvised supplies until emergency responders arrived.

Colorado Springs School Resource Officer VuongVu Le was the first law enforcement official on scene. He secured the area and provided the Guardians with a medical kit to continue administering care.

“They deserve all the recognition,” Officer Le said. “Their teamwork allowed me to secure the scene, knowing the driver was in good hands.”

The three Guardians were formally recognized for their actions during a ceremony at Peterson SFB on May 1, 2025, where each received the Air and Space Achievement Medal.

They were also coined by leadership from Space Delta 13, including the commander and senior enlisted leader, in appreciation of their readiness and response.

Officer Le and representatives from the Colorado Springs Police Department were also in attendance to recognize the Guardians for their efforts.

“We just wanted to make sure they were stable until first responders arrived,” Morgan said. “You never know how you’re going to react in a moment like that, but I couldn’t be more proud of my team.”

Their actions reflect the Guardian commitment to service, character, and community—on and off duty.

In a coordinated series of operations on Sunday, the Border Security Force (BSF) recovered pistol parts, a heroin packet, and a drone from different locations along the Punjab border.

The recoveries were made in Ferozepur, Amritsar, and Tarn Taran districts, following actionable intelligence inputs.

According to an official statement, BSF troops today recovered pistol parts, a heroin packet and a drone in three separate incidents on the Punjab border.

“Today in the morning hours, a search operation by BSF troops was conducted in the suspected border area of Ferozepur, following an intelligence input.

The troops successfully recovered a packet containing one pistol body (without slide) with two magazines from a farming field adjacent to Lakha Singh Wala Hither village in Ferozepur district,” said the release.

As per the release, in the second incident, based on the information of BSF intelligence wing, a search operation was launched by BSF troops in a suspected area, and at about 12:35 pm, the party recovered one packet of suspected heroin (Gross weight- 550 Grams) from a farming field adjacent to village- Mahawa of district Amritsar.

The packet was wrapped with white cotton cloth, and an improvised loop with two illuminating strips was found attached to it.

According to the release, in yet another incident today, a joint search operation by BSF in collaboration with Punjab Police was conducted based on information provided by the BSF intelligence wing.

The search culminated in the recovery of a DJI AIR 3 S drone from a farming field adjacent to the village, Mehdipur district of Tarn Taran.

Reliable input from the BSF intelligence wing and swift action of the troops once again foiled the smuggling attempt of arms and narcotics from across the border.

Russian forces have repelled another Ukrainian assault on Russia’s border region of Kursk by hitting the enemy with an artillery barrage, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has said, releasing a video of the strikes.

In a post on Telegram on Saturday, Kadyrov stated that “the Nazis from the Armed Forces of Ukraine” tried to penetrate Russian territory from the neighboring Sumy Region, but were thwarted by the Akhmat Special Forces, with support from assault groups from the 2nd special forces brigade and the 15th tank regiment.

”They [the Ukrainians] just won’t calm down after their shameful expulsion from Russian soil,” he added.

Kadyrov described the tactics used to stop the incursion as “extremely simple.”

“Drone operators detect the Nazis and their fortifications on the ground and relay the coordinates to assault troops, artillerymen, or, as in this case, tank forces. Then, their positions get pounded,” he wrote.

The one-minute clip filmed from a drone shows a group of Ukrainian soldiers walking through a forested area and being hit by several artillery strikes. The video later shows several corpses strewn on the ground.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Ukrainian forces, which launched a full-scale incursion into Kursk Region in August 2024, were completely driven back after months of fighting.

According to Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, total Ukrainian losses in the area totaled over 76,000 personnel killed and wounded, as well as hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles.

Kiev has denied the statement that its forces have been routed and expelled from Kursk Region, but acknowledged that they found themselves in a “complicated” situation.

When Ukrainian forces previously occupied part of Kursk Region, Moscow accused Kiev of committing numerous atrocities against Russian civilians and prisoners of war.

A Ukrainian drone has targeted a Russian Orthodox church in Belgorod Region, setting fire to the building, the local governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has reported.

Since the escalation of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022, the Russian border region has repeatedly come under artillery and mortar fire, as well as UAV attacks, by Ukrainian forces.

In a post on his Telegram channel on Saturday, Gladkov wrote that the “the enemy is striking our holy sites again – an enemy drone has attacked Saint George Church in the village of Tolokonnoye,” not far from Belgorod.

According to the official, the building’s domes caught fire as a result of the incident. The governor thanked local self-defense forces for swiftly responding to the attack and extinguishing the flames quickly, which prevented further damage to the church.

In a separate post on Saturday, Gladkov estimated that over the past 24 hours, Kiev’s forces have launched over 40 drones and fired nearly 150 artillery shells at multiple localities in Belgorod Region, resulting in material damage. There have been no reports of casualties.

Last Thursday, the iconic New Jerusalem Orthodox church complex in the region burned down following a Ukrainian drone strike.

Commenting on the incident at the time, Gladkov described it as a “deliberate” attack and also accused the Ukrainian military of subsequently targeting the firefighters who were trying to contain the blaze.

The metropolitan bishop of Belgorod Region, Ioann, similarly characterized the attack as “intentional,” saying that Kiev’s troops had deployed incendiary bombs.

He also accused Ukrainian forces of targeting the first responders at the scene. The New Jerusalem complex, a wooden reproduction of biblical Jerusalem, was built in the early 2000s.

In late February, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that “it’s clear that the Kiev regime doesn’t shy away from anything… There’s nothing sacred [for them].”

He made the remarks after Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that it apprehended two suspects who had allegedly planned to assassinate Metropolitan Tikhon, the head of the Simferopol and Crimean diocese, with a bomb, presumably at the behest of the Ukrainian intelligence services.

Metropolitan Tikhon is purported to be a close spiritual adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, though neither man has ever confirmed this.

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on Sunday attacked with drones a military airbase that is part of the international airport at the Red Sea city of Port Sudan, the first attack of any kind on the de facto capital since the Sudanese civil war broke out two years ago.

Military spokesman Brig Gen Nabil Abdullah said the suicide drones attacked an ammunition depot, triggering a series of explosions.

They also hit a warehouse and several civilian installations he did not specify. There were no casualties, he added.

Videos shared online and shot minutes after the drones struck purported to show a large ball of fire followed by a cloud of dark smoke near the airport's tarmac.

The National could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.

Sunday's attack on the air force's Osman Dukna base in Port Sudan signals a dangerous shift in the course of the war between the RSF and the armed forces.

While the use of drones by the RSF will not win territory for the paramilitary, it will have a psychologically disturbing impact on civilians in army-controlled areas and undermine the military's image as the nation's protector.

Port Sudan lies about 650 kilometres from the nearest known RSF positions on the outskirts of Khartoum to the West.

On Saturday, Kassala airport was also targeted by RSF drones, according to witnesses in the city in the eastern region of Sudan.

Officials said flights were temporarily suspended at Port Sudan airport pending a review of the security situation at the site.

Already, a Port Sudan-bound flight from Addis Ababa scheduled for Sunday afternoon was cancelled, according to a passenger who spoke to The National.

Five domestic flights also scheduled for Sunday were cancelled, said the officials.

Port Sudan has been the de facto capital of Sudan since not long after the RSF overran most of Khartoum in the early days of the war.

Army chief Gen Abdel Fattah Al Burhan escaped there following months of being besieged by RSF fighters at the armed troops headquarters in Khartoum.

Port Sudan now is the seat of the military-backed government and is home to the only international airport in areas controlled by the army. It is also used as the main base for foreign diplomats and UN agencies.

The army regained control of Khartoum international airport in March as part of an offensive that rid the city of the RSF, but it remains closed to this day.

The RSF, which has not commented on Sunday's attack, has in recent weeks attacked power stations in army-controlled locations in central and northern Sudan, causing power cuts and raising speculation that the paramilitary might take the fighting to parts of Sudan that had not been touched by the war.

The recent spate of drone attacks followed the RSF's withdrawal from the sprawling, Nile-side capital and appear to make good on pledges by RSF commanders that no place in Sudan would be safe from the paramilitary.

Sudan's civil war, the latest in a series of domestic conflicts to plague Sudan since independence nearly 70 years ago, broke out when months of tension between the army and RSF, led by Gen Mohamed Dagalo, turned into open conflict. Both generals profess to be fighting for Sudan's democracy and prosperity.

The army controls the capital as well as north, east and central Sudan, while the RSF controls most of the vast western Darfur region and parts of Kordofan to the south-west and the south.

The war has left tens of thousands dead and displaced at least 13 million people. About 26 million in Sudan, more than half the population, face acute hunger, with pockets of famine surfacing across the vast, Afro-Arab nation.

The war, according to experts, carries the potential of turning into a regional conflict, drawing in some of Sudan's neighbours, like Chad, South Sudan and Libya.

A Gaza-bound ship that was reportedly hit by drones last week is unable make port after the Republic of Palau revoked its flag rights, the Hamas-linked Freedom Flotilla Coalition claimed on Saturday.

Authorities in Malta, Greece and Turkey have threatened to confiscate the vessel if it docks at their ports, Tighe Barry, a U.S.-based anti-Israel activist with the CodePink group, told the Associated Press.

“To get a new flag will take months, so they’re just stuck out there,” said Barry, an octogenarian who was supposed to board the vessel before it would attempt to run the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

Barry said the Pacific island nation, which often votes with Israel at the U.N., revoked the flag of the ship, named Conscience, before the drone attack.

Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela stressed on Sunday that while his country would not let the Conscience dock, “especially since it doesn’t have a flag and insurance,” his government was offering to repair the damage if it is truly carrying aid.

“We are offering to pay for the repairs after we confirm the ship is, indeed, carrying humanitarian aid,” Abela told reporters, the Times of Malta reported.

“That’s another fact that must be established, as the crew is yet to provide a list of what is on board the vessel. The moment we confirm it’s humanitarian aid for Gaza, we will take care of the repairs.

“The captain is refusing to let the surveyor on board,” the Maltese prime minister said. “We also offered to take all crew and passengers in, but the offer was refused.”

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has said that the vessel was struck twice by suicide drones 17 nautical miles (19.5 miles) east of Malta overnight on Thursday, “causing a fire and a substantial breach in the hull.

“The drone strike appears to have deliberately targeted the ship’s generator, leaving the crew without power and placing the vessel at great risk of sinking,” according to the statement on Friday morning.

The coalition noted in the statement that its latest attempt to breach Israel’s blockade of Gaza had been organized “under a media blackout to avoid any potential sabotage.”

Volunteers from 21 countries were aboard the ship, “including prominent figures,” the group said.

Khao Kala, located just three hours north of Bangkok, has earned its reputation as a UFO hotspot due to persistent claims from locals.

Many residents say they have seen flying saucers or strange lights in the sky, with some asserting these sightings are a nearly daily occurrence.

The hill is nestled in a region known as Nakhon Sawan, or "City of Heaven," adding to the mystique of the location.

According to a report by CNN, villagers believe that telepathic communication with aliens is possible, especially during meditation sessions in front of Buddha statues found on the hill.

Intrigued by the reports, Travis Leon Price visited the site and recorded his journey in a video shared across his social media platforms.

A Cultural Blend: Buddhism And Aliens?

Some locals do not see conflict between their Buddhist faith and extraterrestrial beliefs. In fact, they interpret alien messages as spiritually aligned with traditional religious teachings.

In 2024, a local sect even hosted Thailand’s first UFO music festival, drawing believers and curious visitors from across the country.

Festival attendee Siwadon Chantanasewi told the South China Morning Post, “I thought the aliens might fly past, maybe just pop by for a moment. I had this strong feeling they knew about the festival.”

Government Concerns And Access Rules

Due to growing crowds of UFO seekers, Thai officials have expressed concern about Khao Kala’s status as a protected forest area.

A Florida family was left stunned after spotting a strange white orb hovering silently in the sky for nearly half an hour during a backyard barbecue in Lakeland - but Redditors believe they found what it is.

The sighting occurred around 3.30pm on April 20, 2025, according to a Reddit post by user u/JoeBeeff, who captured the mysterious object on video and shared his observations online.​

While enjoying the sunny day with his brother, they noticed something odd: a circular object hanging motionless in the sky.​

In the footage, the man can be heard saying, 'How long have we been looking at this thing, like 25 minutes in the exact same spot?' He later adds, 'It's not moving,' clearly baffled.​

u/JoeBeeff elaborated in his post: 'The object is still in the sky as of writing this, it doesn't move from what we can tell, not even a little.

'My brother got out his binoculars and it looks circular in shape, almost like you can see through it, and had defined edges visible from the sun's light.

'It was difficult to keep the binoculars steady enough to clearly make out what it is, but I feel like even if I could I couldn't identify what it was.'​

He added that a high-altitude jet flew near the object at one point, making the orb seem unusually large or strangely positioned.

'It appears to me like the object is at a lower orbit than the jet was, that or it is a massive object,' he said, emphasizing that the orb didn't drift with the wind.

'With the naked eye you can clearly tell it's circular shape, but it doesn't move.'​ The sighting quickly garnered attention on Reddit, where users began analyzing the phenomenon.

User u/attsci identified the object on FlightRadar as HBAL728, a Raven Aerostar high-altitude balloon.

Another user, u/Abrodolf_Lincler_, corroborated this by referencing data from SondeHub, indicating a weather balloon above Lakeland at that time.​

Despite the initial mystery, the consensus among the Reddit community points to the object being a high-altitude balloon, likely used for scientific or meteorological purposes.

Such balloons can appear stationary due to their altitude and the observer's perspective from the ground.​

This strange sighting comes as another so-called 'orb' sparked an online frenzy - this time in space.

On Monday, NASA released footage from its Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) showing a dark, circular object drifting across the face of the sun.

The video went viral, with conspiracy theorists insisting the orb was a UFO, claiming it 'stopped, hovered for a bit, moved closer to the sun,' then vanished.

'I guess we'll just have to settle for no answers - and watch this get swept under the rug, just like the obvious UAPs we see every day,' one X user lamented.

Some even went so far as to suggest the celestial object triggered the widespread power outages recently reported in Spain, France, and Portugal.

In reality, NASA confirmed the sighting was nothing more than a lunar transit - a routine celestial event in which the moon passes between a spacecraft and the sun, visible only from space.

On Sunday, the moon covered 23 percent of the sun in a partial eclipse, visible only to NASA's SDO.

Another clip from NOAA showed the moon as a glowing orb zipping through space, adding to the confusion.

But NASA scientists emphasized that the apparent 'hovering UFO' was simply the moon blocking the sun's light.

The SDO even captured detailed views of the moon's mountains as it moved across the sun's surface.

The latest transit lasted about 30 minutes and is part of a series - more are expected on May 25 and July 25.

During the final transit, the moon is expected to cover 62 percent of the sun's face.

Meanwhile, the next solar eclipse visible from Earth won't arrive until September 21, 2025, and will only be seen from parts of New Zealand, the South Pacific, and Antarctica.

NASA's SDO has been monitoring the sun since its launch on February 11, 2010, capturing continuous high-resolution images to better understand solar activity - and occasionally sparking a UFO rumor or two along the way.

Matthew Brown, who claims the Pentagon has a secret program to collect footage of UFOs, is the first of several whistleblowers who will come forward soon to release new information about unexplainable technology, podcaster and journalist Jeremy Corbell says.

Brown, a former national security professional, appeared this week on Corbell and George Knapp’s “Weaponized” podcast to say the Defense Department has covertly amassed an archive of UFO videos and pictures from military sources under a program called “Immaculate Constellation.”

Secure government servers purportedly contain UFO images and lengthy clips the public has not seen.

Brown previously sought to disclose the information through proper channels and only now has stepped forward to identify himself, Corbell said.

“Matthew Brown, he’s a courageous person, and I think the public needs to protect and support him,” he told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” on Friday.

Brown says the objects he saw in the videos aren’t necessarily extraterrestrial or nonhuman, but he described them as “exotic and unexplainable” and beyond conventional technology.

“We are talking thousands of videos and photos … that the American public hasn’t seen of these advanced craft we call UAP that are of unknown origin,” Corbell said, referring to the phrase “unidentified anomalous phenomena” that sometimes is used in place of UFOs.

Corbell said he hopes Brown will be allowed to testify before Congress about what he discovered.

In the meantime, the podcaster said, he and Knapp have already interviewed several other whistleblowers who have new information about the craft.

“We have already recorded with other firsthand whistleblowers that we have yet to release. So, I can promise you, people are coming forward, an army of people are coming forward,” he said.

President Trump announced his first judicial nominee of his second term, kicking off what will be a historic next four years as he continues to build on the most consequential accomplishment of his first term by appointing even more bold and fearless judges. The stakes could not be higher as Democrat activist judges are actively sabotaging American voters, the presidency, our Constitution, and our country.

Trump nominated Whitney Hermandorfer to a Tennessee-based seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She is a brilliant legal mind and committed constitutionalist who has litigated critical First Amendment issues. Trump's first nomination stands in stark contrast to the Obama- and Biden-appointed Democrat activist judges who have repeatedly attempted to sabotage the president’s core Article II executive powers during these first months of Trump’s historic second term. These anti-American judges, who side with Hamas supporters, MS-13 gang members, and no-show federal bureaucrats leeching on the taxpayer, need to be countered. Trump’s nominees promise a return to the original vision of a judiciary grounded in constitutionalism and judicial restraint.

During his 2016 campaign, Trump boldly and brilliantly ran on the issue of judicial nominations in an unprecedented way. He released a list of potential Supreme Court candidates from which he would choose to fill the vacancy arising from Justice Antonin Scalia’s death. This list of nominees set him apart from his rival at the time, Hillary Clinton. Had Clinton won, we would have been subjected to leftist judicial tyranny for at least a generation. Fortunately for the Constitution and the American people, Trump prevailed, and the country was rewarded with Justice Neil Gorsuch instead of Justice Merrick Garland. Given his horrendous and truly shameful service as attorney general, Garland would have been an unmitigated disaster had he received a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.

Trump did not stop after the confirmation of Gorsuch. Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation shifted the balance of the Court in 2018, as he replaced Anthony Kennedy, the pivotal justice in countless landmark cases. The coup de gras came in 2020, when Trump replaced liberal lion Ruth Bader Ginsburg with the more conservative Amy Coney Barrett. This dramatic shift paid dividends in short order and in many consequential ways.

In 2022, the Court overruled Roe v. Wade (1973) in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and restored the issue of abortion to its rightful place: the states. The justices also strengthened the Second Amendment in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, ruling that the Second Amendment requires "shall-issue" concealed-carry permits. No longer can states have foggy standards where bureaucrats whimsically decide whether to allow citizens to carry concealed weapons. States must set forth standards, and citizens who satisfy those standards will be able to carry such firearms.

The next year, the Court put a stop to the practice of race-based college admissions policies in two cases involving Harvard and the University of North Carolina. Thanks to the rulings in Students for Fair Admissions, students must be evaluated based on merit. Conservatives had been trying for decades to eliminate affirmative action, just as they had abortion. Trump made these dreams come true. Last year, the Court struck a giant blow against the administrative state in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, a decision that overturned the requirement that courts defer to administrative agencies when a statute is ambiguous.

He will look beyond the garden-variety Federalist Society choices and install a new generation of judicial titans who will change the landscape for generations to come in line with our Founders’ intent.

Just days after Loper Bright, the justices strengthened the presidency in Trump v. United States. There, the Court held that presidents are absolutely immune when exercising core Article II powers like pardons and at least presumptively immune for acts done within the outer perimeters of their official duties. This ruling enormously aided Trump against the lawfare perpetrated by the Biden Justice Department.

A Houthi official has confirmed the attack on Ben Gurion near Tel Aviv, claiming that the group has “no red lines” in its fight against Israel

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that it failed to intercept the missile despite several attempts.

“An impact was identified in the area of Ben Gurion Airport,” the IDF said in a post on Telegram. The Israeli Air Force is investigating the failure.

The Houthis, who control western Yemen, including the capital and the port of Hodeidah, have launched a number of drones and missiles at commercial vessels passing through the Red Sea and at targets in Israel over the past year, aiming to pressure West Jerusalem over its military operation in Gaza. Israel launched the campaign following a deadly raid by the Palestinian militant group Hamas in October 2023. The Houthis said they would stop the attacks if Israel halts its operation in Gaza.

Israel has not launched strikes against Yemen in response to the Houthi attacks. The US, however, began air and naval strikes against Houthi targets in March, citing threats to Red Sea shipping. Last week, US President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to intensify strikes in Yemen and warned that the Houthis would be “completely annihilated” if they continued their attacks. Russia has urged Washington to halt its strikes on Yemen. In a phone call in March with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for an immediate end to the use of force and urged all sides to engage in political dialogue.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has blamed Iran for the Houthi strike and vowed a response.

Writing on X, he shared Donald Trump’s post from March in which the US president also made accusations against Tehran.

“President Trump is absolutely right!” Netanyahu said. “Attacks by the Houthis emanate from Iran. Israel will respond to the Houthi attack against our main airport AND, at a time and place of our choosing, to their Iranian terror masters.”

Iran has repeatedly denied the claims that it aids the Houthis.

Congress is expected to revisit the topic of UFOs, its first major public discussion in six months.

The May 1 event is not a formal hearing, but a public briefing without sworn testimony.

It will feature open discussions with members of Congress about the unexplained objects the government now refers to as unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP.

In fact, three of those scheduled to appear during the briefing, hosted by the nonprofit UAP Disclosure Fund, testified in November 2024 before subcommittees of the House Oversight Committee.

The Disclosure Fund, which advocates for government transparency about UAP, said the session will "offer a science‑driven perspective" about the phenomena, as well as the implications for national security.

Nevadans are no strangers to government secrecy and unexplained airspace activity, given the state’s proximity to military test sites.

Here's a look at what federal officials are saying about UAPs and what alien activity Nevadans have reported seeing in the skies over the Silver State.

What did witnesses tell Congress about UAPs / UFOs in November?

During more than two hours of testimony Nov. 14, 2024, four witnesses described to Congress reports of strange craft out-maneuvering U.S. military aircraft and flying in ways beyond the capabilities of known human technology.

In his opening remarks, Luis Elizondo, a former military intelligence official, lambasted the intelligence community for its decades of "excessive secrecy" around UAP reports – "all to hide the fact that we are not alone in the cosmos," he said.

Elizondo resigned and went public in October 2017 after 10 years of running a Pentagon program to investigate UFO sightings.

Timothy Gallaudet, a retired rear admiral in the U.S. Navy; and Michael Shellenberger, a journalist who publishes the “Public” newsletter on Substack, also alluded in their testimony to images of UAP in the government's possession that have yet to be made public.

Michael Gold, a former NASA associate administrator, was the fourth witness to testify.

Elizondo, Gallaudet and Gold are all scheduled to appear May 1 during the UAP briefing. Elizondo is on the Disclosure Fund's board of directors, while Gallaudet joined the organization's advisory board in February 2025.

"I believe we as Americans can handle the truth," Elizondo said in November, "and I also believe the world deserves the truth."

What did the leader of the Pentagon's UAP office say?

Days after the hearing – which also included reinforced claims of an active military program to retrieve downed alien spacecraft – the leader of the Pentagon's office to investigate UFOs provided testimony of his own.

That agency, the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) came under heavy fire at the hearing when the witnesses blasted it for what they claimed were secrecy and spreading misinformation.

Many sightings AARO has historically investigated are reported by military fighter pilots, some of whom have captured footage on jets' cockpit gun cameras of UAP.

But so far, the agency has repeatedly denied finding any evidence that the craft were extraterrestrial in nature.

Jon T. Kosloski, the newly-appointed director of AARO, reinforced those findings when he testified Nov. 19 in a Senate hearing, saying the office "has not discovered any verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity, or technology."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Qatar on Saturday of “playing both sides,” leading a top government spokesperson in Doha to hit back, asserting that the premier’s framing of the war in Gaza as one between “civilization and barbarism” echoes the rhetoric of history’s darkest regimes.

The fight on X came two days after Qatar — which serves as one of three mediators in the still-stuck hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas — accused Jerusalem of genocide during an International Court of Justice hearing.

The further escalation in tensions between Israel and Qatar also came a week after officials from both countries accused each other of sabotaging the hostage talks, though they made the allegations in briefings to the media on condition of anonymity.

On Saturday, Netanyahu tweeted from his official prime minister X account, “Israel is fighting a just war with just means. After the October 7 atrocities, Prime Minister Netanyahu defined the War of Redemption as a war between civilization and barbarism.”

“The time has come for Qatar to stop playing both sides with its double talk and decide if it’s on the side of civilization or if it’s on the side of Hamas barbarism. Israel will win this just war with just means,” the premier added.

“Portraying the ongoing aggression against Gaza as a defense of ‘civilization’ echoes the rhetoric of regimes throughout history that have used false narratives to justify crimes against innocent civilians,” al-Ansari said.

He went on to assert that Qatar has worked since the start of the war to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of the hostages.

“A legitimate question must be raised: Were the releases of no fewer than 138 hostages achieved through so-called ‘just’ military operations, or through the very mediation that is now being unjustly criticized and undermined?” al-Ansari continued. Israel has argued that its military pressure was critical in coaxing Hamas to agree to hostage deals in November 2023 and January 2025.

any people are worried that the region's electrical supply may be disrupted after a large fire broke out late Saturday at the Montazer Qaem Power Station in Karaj, which is west of Tehran. Dramatic imagery circulated on Iranian social media sites showed the facility, which has a generating capacity of around 1600 megawatts, engulfed in flames.

Iran's Tasnim News Agency denied reports that the fire was the result of an assault despite the frightening sights. Rather, they said the fire and massive power disruptions were caused by a powerful storm that hit Karaj. In order to contain the situation and restore power, emergency personnel were quickly called in.

According to Mehr News Agency, a major fire occurred at a cardboard manufacturing facility in the province of Alborz, specifically at Nazarabad. Twelve areas of the facility were affected by the flames, but no injuries have been recorded as of yet. Firefighters are still working to completely put out the fire.

Netanyahu vows response after Houthi missile hits near Israel's main airport

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate against the Houthis after a missile fired by the group struck the grounds of Israel's main airport.

In a video posted on social media, Netanyahu threatened strikes, saying: "We attacked in the past, we will attack in the future".

The missile, fired from Yemen by the Iran-backed group, landed near the main terminal of Ben Gurion airport on Sunday morning, Israeli authorities said.

Four people were injured by the blast, with another two injured on their way to a shelter, Israeli media reported, citing emergency services. None were seriously hurt.

Later on Sunday, the Houthis said they would impose "a comprehensive aerial blockade" on Israel by repeatedly targeting its airports, in response to Israeli military plans to expand operations in Gaza.

Israel's defence minister, Israel Katz, responded to the attack by saying: "Anyone who hits us, we will hit them seven times stronger".

In a later statement, Netanyahu said "attacks by the Houthis emanate from Iran", adding Israel would respond to the Houthi attack, and to Iran "at a time and place of our choosing".

Unverified footage posted online appeared to show drivers on a road nearby pulled over to take cover as a projectile lands, creating a plume of black smoke near the airport, which is on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.

The airport has now reopened to flights, after temporarily halting them - though several major airlines, including Lufthansa, Air France and Delta, cancelled Sunday's flights to and from the airport.

Sirens were activated in several parts of the country as the missile approached - and the Israeli Air Force said it was investigating the failure to intercept it.

Citing defence sources, Israeli media reported that both Israel's long-range Arrow air defence system and a US-made Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) battery failed to intercept the missile.

Senior Israeli police commander Yair Hetzroni showed journalists a crater caused by the impact of the missile, which airport authorities said had landed beside a road near a Terminal three parking lot.

"You can see the scene right behind us here, a hole that opened up with a diameter of tens of metres and also tens of metres deep," Hetzroni said, adding that there was no significant damage.

Netanyahu is set to meet ministers and defence officials on Sunday to discuss a response, local media reported.

The Houthis, an Iran-backed rebel group based in Yemen, have regularly launched missile attacks at Israel in solidarity with Hamas in Gaza, but it is rare for one to make it through Israel's sophisticated air defences.

The group have also been carrying out attacks on ships in the Red Sea, which the US has responded to by leading a bombing campaign against it - which the UK has assisted in.

Five people were arrested in Wageningen on Monday morning for disrupting a speech by defence minister Ruben Brekelmans during the Liberation Day celebrations.

Police said the demonstrators had climbed over barriers that were in place to hold back the crowds. Several voices were heard shouting “Free Palestine”.

Brekelmans paused his speech several times as police removed the protesters before addressing them directly.

“The monster of war is back with us in Europe again, raising a fundamental question,” the minister said. “Do we look away or do we stand up?”

“I say this also to the people we just saw here: let us hold on to each other and not be driven apart — that is the task we all face.”

Earlier in the day, a group of 200 to 300 people had gathered along a main road to protest at the arrival of prime minister Dick Schoof and Martin Bosma, parliamentary party leader and representative of the "far-right" PVV.

The protesters held an 80-metre-long “red line” made of fabric, saying Schoof bears responsibility for “a cabinet that refuses to draw a red line against the large-scale violence committed by Israel, despite overwhelming evidence of genocide against the Palestinian people”.

They also carried signs with slogans such as “Not then, not now, never again”, according to local broadcaster Omroep Gelderland.
