The most important clause in this bill is the one that makes a referendum on separation not just legal, but logistically possible.

While the rest of Canada woke up hungover to a Liberal minority under Prime Minister Mark Carney, Alberta soberly took the first legal step toward the exit door.

Tuesday afternoon, Premier Danielle Smith’s government introduced the Election Statutes Amendment Act, 2025—and buried inside it is the most explosive reform in decades: a realistic path to a citizen-led referendum on Alberta separation.

The bill slashes the threshold under the Citizen Initiative Act—a law that technically allowed referendums on policy and constitutional matters, but until now, came with a signature requirement so high it was dead on arrival.

Before? You needed signatures from 20% of all eligible voters in Alberta—more than 600,000 people in 90 days. Now? The bar has been lowered to 10% of the number of voters who actually cast ballots in the last general election—just over 208,000 names.

And that change was introduced less than 24 hours after Mark Carney was elected by Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces, with virtually no support in Alberta or Saskatchewan.

The timing isn’t a coincidence. It’s a message.

The bill includes other changes: banning electronic vote tabulators, scrapping vouching, expanding access to special ballots, and even bringing back corporate and union donations—with disclosure requirements.

But make no mistake: the most important clause in this bill is the one that makes a referendum on separation not just legal, but logistically possible.

It’s a political earthquake hiding in a procedural memo.

For the first time ever, Albertans can realistically force a vote on independence—and it’s happening just as the country they’re being told to stay in moves further and further away from who they are.

“Operation Lights Out” Targets Online Sexual Predators, Leads to 19 Arrests including Human Trafficking Charges

Columbus, Georgia (April 28, 2025) – A four-day proactive online undercover investigation, coordinated by the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, resulted in the arrest of 19 people on numerous charges, including human trafficking charges. The operation, named “Operation Lights Out,” ran from April 24 through April 28, 2025.

The goal of “Operation Lights Out” was to identify persons who engage in sexually explicit communication with children on the Internet, arrange to engage in a sex act with the child, and then travel to meet the child for the purpose of having sex. Additionally, the operation targeted those who are willing to exploit children by purchasing sex with a minor. Online child predators use social media sites, messaging apps, and websites on the Internet to find children, begin conversations with them, introduce sexual content, and arrange a meeting with the child for the purpose of having sex. Boys and girls are both targeted by these predators.

The following people were arrested and charged:

Kevin Edosomwan, age 38, of Atlanta, Georgia, occupation: HVAC technician; charged with Computer or Electronic Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 2007.

Jonathan Evans, age 46, of LaGrange, Georgia, occupation: sanitation worker; charged with Human Trafficking.

Galvin Latrell Gordey, age 44, of Pittsview, Alabama, occupation: sanitation worker; charged with Human Trafficking.

Marco Antonio Santos Chavez, age 30, of Fort Payne, Alabama, occupation: painter; charged with Human Trafficking and subject to an ICE Detainer.

Anthony Seldon, age 34, of Columbus, Georgia, occupation: janitor; charged with Human Trafficking, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Reckless Driving, and Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers.

Cameron Shelley, age 25, of Columbus, Georgia, occupation: truck driver; charged with Human Trafficking.

Jungmok Shin, age 33, of Phenix City, Alabama, occupation: engineer; charged with Human Trafficking.

“Operation Lights Out” took months of planning and involved the collaboration of 12 law enforcement agencies, consisting of local, state, and federal agencies that are part of the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. The arrestees, ranging in age from 21 to 68, traveled from areas around Columbus, Georgia, with the intent to meet a child for sex. GBI digital forensic investigators were on hand during the operation to forensically process 21 electronic devices that were seized as evidence during the operation.

Hockey player Matt Petgrave will not face criminal charges over throat kick death of Adam Johnson

The Canadian hockey player Matt Petgrave, who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of former NHL and Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson in 2023, will not face criminal charges, prosecutors have confirmed.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) — an independent organisation that prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative bodies in England and Wales — confirmed Tuesday it has decided against seeking a conviction.

Johnson, 29, died after being cut in the neck by a skate during a game against the Sheffield Steelers on October 28, 2023, in what his team, the Nottingham Panthers, labelled a “freak accident.”

South Yorkshire Police (SYP) arrested Petgrave on suspicion of manslaughter on November 14, 2023, and he was subsequently released on police bail as the investigation into Johnson’s death continued.

The CPS received the case file from police in May 2024 and spent nearly a year reviewing it before deciding against bringing charges.

Petgrave was told to remain in the United Kingdom while the investigation was ongoing and his bail was extended eight times, most recently on February 28.

A CPS statement read: “The Crown Prosecution Service has decided it will not bring criminal charges against a professional ice hockey player following the death of Adam Johnson during a match between The Sheffield Steelers and The Nottingham Panthers.”

Michael Quinn, deputy chief crown prosecutor, said: “This was a shocking and deeply upsetting incident. The CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked closely together to determine whether any criminal charges should be brought against the other ice hockey player involved.

“Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence and so there will not be a prosecution. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson.”

“Extensive enquiries, including reviewing footage, interviewing witnesses and consulting with highly-specialised experts from North America, were carried out,” a statement from SYP read.

“In May 2024, a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for review and for a charging decision to be made. Since then, we have worked closely with the CPS and provided them with supplementary information to address follow-up enquiries.

“Following the CPS review, they have declined to authorise charges.”

Benjamin Wood, a detective chief inspector at SYP and the senior investigating officer, added: “Adam Johnson’s death has left a lasting impact that was felt through many communities, from Sheffield residents to ice hockey fans across the globe.

“Following Adam’s tragic death, we have worked tirelessly to fully investigate the unprecedented circumstances that took place at the Utilia Arena in October 2023.

“Our investigation has involved complex consultations with specialist experts from North America, as well as working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service.

“While our investigation has now concluded, our thoughts remain wholeheartedly with Adam’s family, and everyone who has been affected by this devastating tragedy.”

Petgrave has never been named by UK police but a crowdfunding account purporting to belong to him was launched in December to help him in his legal fight.

A message posted by an account claiming to be him on CrowdJustice — an online platform where individuals or groups can appeal for money to fund legal action — read: “I am seeking help to cover some of my legal costs whilst I am subject to police bail, as well as additional costs if the matter proceeds to criminal court. Any remaining funds will be donated to initiatives that promote safety in hockey.”

The message on the CrowdJustice page also claims that Petgrave has been unable to work in the UK while he awaits a resolution to the police investigation.

The Athletic has been unable to contact Petgrave to confirm whether the page is genuine.

Johnson joined the Panthers in the summer of 2023 to play in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), a competition which has 10 franchises including teams in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England.

“We note the recent update from South Yorkshire Police that no charges will be bought against Matt Petgrave following the death of Adam Johnson in October 2023,” the EIHL said. “Our thoughts remain with everyone involved in the accident, and player safety and welfare remains our top priority.”

Johnson previously played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, scoring a goal and four points in 13 games over parts of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

Before joining Pittsburgh, Johnson played collegiately at the University of Minnesota Duluth for two seasons.

A "superbike for the skies" has officially emerged from stealth mode, drawing striking parallels to the iconic speeder bikes from the early 1980s sci-fi classic Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.

Poland-based startup Volonaut unveiled a single-seater jet-powered hoverbike that clocks in speeds in excess of 124 mph.

"The futuristic single occupant vehicle is a realization of a bold concept often portrayed in science-fiction movies - this is where the inspiration came from many years ago and with time became the obsession to its creator," the company wrote in an emailed response.

A "HIGH INTEREST" RE-ENTRY

In 1972, the Soviet Union's Kosmos 482 spacecraft was supposed to land on Venus. More than 50 years later, it's returning to Earth instead. Touchdown is expected on May 10th, give or take a few days.

"This will not be your standard reentry," says satellite analyst Marco Langbroek, who has been tracking the object for years. "The Kosmos 482 Descent Craft was designed to survive the dense atmosphere of Venus. It will therefore likely survive reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere intact and make a crash landing. This will therefore be a high-interest reentry."

Kosmos 482 was part of the Soviet Union's successful Venera program to explore Venus. Between 1961 and 1984, thirteen Soviet probes successfully entered Venus's atmosphere, with ten landing on the planet's surface. Kosmos 482, however, never fully escaped Earth. After it was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on March 31, 1972, the upper stage of its Molniya rocket shut down prematurely, leaving it in a 206 x 9802 kilometer orbit that has been decaying ever since.

"With an orbital inclination of 52 degrees, the Kosmos 482 Descent Craft could come down anywhere between 52 degrees north and 52 degrees south latitude," says Langbroek. "This includes much of south and mid-latitude Europe and Asia, as well as the Americas, Africa and Australia." Statistically, an ocean landing is the most likely outcome.

The probe was designed to parachute to the surface of Venus. However, it is very unlikely that the parachute system will work after more than 50 years in space, so this will be a crash landing. How bad will it be? Many details of the descent craft have been lost to history. Langbroek believes it is about 1 meter in diameter with a mass of ~495 kg. It won't do major damage, but you wouldn't want to be standing where it lands.

This has happened twice in the past week. On April 27th, David Blanchard photographed a red sphere over the countryside near Flagstaff, Arizona

He had seen an almost identical sphere three nights earlier on April 24th. "In each case, they faded after a minute or two," he says.

These spheres are caused by SpaceX. On both nights, SpaceX had launched batches of Starlink satellites from Cape Canaveral (Group 6-74 and Group 12-23). After deploying the satellites, the second stage of each rocket executed a deorbit burn over the US west coast, creating the red glow.

Why red? Fire is not involved. During deorbit burns, Falcon 9 second stage engines release about 400lbs of water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). A complicated series of charge exchange reactions between those molecules and oxygen ions (O+) in the upper atmosphere produce photons at a wavelength of 6300 Å–the same color as red auroras.

In an earlier report on this same phenomenon, Stephen Hummel of the McDonald Observatory in Texas said "we are seeing 2 to 5 of these each month." Thats a lot of red spheres. If you live in the western US you might be be able to see some, too. Observing tips: Check the SpaceX launch schedule for night launches from Cape Canaveral. Deorbit burns occur about 90 minutes after liftoff.

They work alongside the other, lower-tier councils - district, borough or city - that take care of things on a smaller scale, such as:

A unitary authority is a one-tier local government, where the services of a county council and the other smaller councils listed above are combined.

A metropolitan district has a council that oversees all services, similar to a unitary authority - but has a mayor with a role similar to that of local councils.

The mayors for Doncaster and North Tyneside are single authority, making them the political leader of the council and leaving them responsible for delivering local council services.

How can I vote?

You must be aged 18 or over (or 16 or over in Scotland and Wales) and be registered to vote.

If you have not yet registered, it is too late to do so in time for the elections on Thursday.

There are three ways to vote:

In person at your local polling station

You'll be sent a poll card just before an election or referendum telling you when to vote and at which polling station. It will usually be in a public building, such as a school or local hall, near your home.

This is where you apply for someone to vote on your behalf if you cannot go to the polling station in person and do not want to or can't vote by post.

Which elections have been postponed - and why?

Elections for county councils in the following areas have been postponed until May 2026:

• Norfolk

• Suffolk

• Essex

• Thurrock

• Surrey

• Hampshire

• Isle of Wight

Most areas of the UK are now covered by one-tier systems such as unitary authorities, but there are still 21 county councils.

Remaining county councils are being encouraged to merge with other local authorities to become unitary authorities.

So in December last year, county councils could request to postpone their elections set for Thursday if they were trying to reorganise into one-tier systems.

While 16 county councils requested to postpone, only the eight listed above were successful.

An English teacher at Waterville Senior High School took a break on Tuesday from instructing students on grammar and syntaxto publicly call for the Secret Service to assassinate President Donald Trump and his supporters.

“The Secret Service has the perfect opportunity, if they choose to step up and take it.You are the ones with power. Coordinate.Take out every single person who supports Trump’s illegal, immoral, unconstitutional acts. Look at the sycophants and give them what they’re asking for. Every other country sees what’s happening and they are taking stands. If you step up, we can avoid a civil war,” said JoAnna St. Germain in the pinned post on her Facebook account.

“I’m not talking about assassinating a president. A president is a person duly elected by the American people. Tr*mp has shamelessly bragged openly about stealing the election. He is making plans to give himself a third term. I’m talking about Americans recognizing a fascist dictatorship and standing against it,” she added.

St. Germain regretfully explained that she would happily murder President Trump and “every single person” who supports him herself, but that she lacks the necessary skills, and she called on the Secret Service and the military to carry out the murders instead.

“Secret Service, you are Americans. My beloved military, you are Americans. We, the people, are counting on you. If I had the skill set required, I would take them out myself. I’m making this post public for a reason, I promise you. Don’t waste time wondering if I’m okay. I’m not. If you’re okay, you’re lying to yourself,” said St. Germain.

St. Germain’s call for the murder of every Trump supporter puts Trump-supporting parents in the uncomfortable position of sending their children to be taught by a woman who, quite literally, wants them dead and has even expressed a desire to commit murder herself if she had the “skill set required.”

The Maine Wire reached out to Principal Brian Laramee of the Waterville Senior High School, asking whether any disciplinary action will be taken against St. Germain for her violent rhetoric, but they did not immediately respond.

After The Maine Wire called attention to St. Germain’s rant on social media, and reached out to her principal, she posted a series of additional posts clarifying her comments.

“My friends. I am so sorry you took that post to mean that all Republicans should die. I have no beef with Republicans. I have no beef with MAGA. I meant that those in the room with Trump, who are permitting and approving his egregious actions, need to be held accountable,” she said.

“I’ve been teaching history for so long, and it’s very difficult to watch things repeat in rhymes. I love each and every one of you, and I understand why you’re angry with me. I love your children. I love the disabled. I love the LGBTQ+ community. I love black and brown people. I love autistic people. My love holds no quarter for people in power actively harming those I love,” she added.

A teacher in Maine repeatedly called for the killing of President Trump and his supporters in a shocking slew of social media posts - even acknowledging that her boss 'will have to fire me' over the call to violence.

JoAnna St. Germain, an English teacher at Waterville Senior High School, took to Facebook to share her inflammatory thoughts on how to 'take out' the president.

'The Secret Service has the perfect opportunity, if they choose to step up and take it,' she wrote.

'You are the ones with power. Coordinate. Take out every single person who supports Trump’s illegal, immoral, unconstitutional acts. Look at the sycophants and give them what they’re asking for.

'Every other country sees what’s happening and they are taking stands. If you step up, we can avoid a civil war.'

St. Germain wrote that she would not view the act as 'assassinating a president,' because 'a president is a person duly elected by the American people.'

'Trump has shamelessly bragged openly about stealing the election. He is making plans to give himself a third term,' she wrote.

After her post sparked outrage online, the teacher doubled down by saying that she made the statements 'knowing I'd likely lose my job and benefits,' but went ahead regardless because she believes Trump is comparable to Adolf Hitler.

In her original post, St. Germain said that she was urging the Secret Service to assassinate Trump and his team, but 'if I had the skill set required, I would take them out myself.'

'I'm making this post public for a reason, I promise you,' she added.

In a follow-up Facebook post, the teacher attempted to clarify her remarks on killing Trump and his inner circle by saying she was not calling for the deaths of all Republicans.

'I have no beef with Republicans, I have no beef with MAGA,' she wrote.

'I meant that those in the room with Trump, who are permitting and approving his egregious actions, need to be held accountable.

'I love each and every one of you, and I understand why you're angry with me... My love holds no quarter for people in power actively harming those I love.'

After sharing her explanation, St. Germain followed up with more calls for Trump's killing, including one saying he 'needs to have a conversation with Jesus.'

She went on to say she posted the remarks knowing she may lose her job, but insisted: 'I have zero shame about what I've said.

'I believe Trump and every sycophant he has surrounded himself with (this is not you - if you're reading this, this doesn't apply to you. You are beneath his notice and mine) needs to die,' she wrote.

Comparing Trump's orbit to the Nazis, she continued: 'I believe this will the same forceful belief that Hitler and his sycophants needed to die, before they murdered six million innocent Jewish persons.'

After her comments circulated widely on social media, St. Germain added one more post insisting she doesn't suffer from 'Trump Derangement Syndrome.'

'If you're mad at this post, knowing that I just threw away a decade of experience teaching the truth, fully knowing that my superintendent will have to fire me?

'If you’re mad that I'm speaking truth to power? F*** you. I’ll still take a bullet to keep your child safe.'

St. Germain did not immediately respond to a request for comment from DailyMail.com

At least seven people have been killed and over 20 wounded in Russia’s Kherson Region, Vladimir Saldo has said

The Ukrainian military carried out a drone strike on the town of Aleshki in Russia’s Kherson Region on Thursday,targeting a busy local market, the regional governor, Vladimir Saldo, has said. At least seven people have been killed in the attack and over 20 more wounded, he added in a post on Telegram.

According to Saldo, the attack occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time near the central market, where many people were present. He said theinitial “massive strike” was followed by another aimed “to finish off the survivors.”

Saldo said emergency services have already arrived at the scene. He also posted on his Telegram channel a video purportedly showing the second drone attack.

“There were a lot of people in the market at the time of the attack. According to preliminary data, at least 7 people were killed and more than 20 injured. Details are being clarified,” Saldo wrote in his post.

In a video address on Telegram, Saldo saidUkrainian attacks on settlements near the Dnieper River in Kherson Region have intensified since Wednesday. “They dropped shells and ammunition from drones on the houses of heads of municipal divisions. In the morning, they continued attacks in the most barbaric way at the market in the town of Aleshki,” he said, comparing Kiev’s forces to the followers of the World War II-era Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera.

Saldo added thatUkrainian forces have previously also “systematically” targeted ambulances, making it difficult to evacuate the wounded from affected areas.

The town of Aleshki sits on the left bank of the Dnieper River, about 5km southeast of Kherson, which is under Ukrainian control. As of 2019, its population was 24,600 people. By 2024, the population had dropped fourfold, mainly due to Ukrainian military aggression and constant shelling. The town was targeted by Ukrainian drones last month, when Kiev violated the Easter truce previously reached with Moscow.

Kherson Region, along with Zaporozhye and the Donbass republics, joined Russia following referendums in 2022. Parts of the region, however, remain under Kiev’s control. Genichesk has been designated as the temporary administrative center.

US senator threatens Russia with ‘bone-crushing’ sanctions

Lindsey Graham says he has wide Senate backing for a bill that includes 500% tariffs on countries buying key Russian exports

US Senator Lindsey Graham has claimed broad Senate support for a bill that would enact “bone-crushing” new sanctions on Russia and impose steep tariffs on countries purchasing its key exports.Graham told reporters on Wednesday that his goal is to support President Donald Trump in negotiationswith Russia over a potential Ukraine settlement.

The US imposed extensive sanctions on Moscow since the conflict with Kiev escalated in 2022, targeting financial institutions, trade, and energy exports. While Trump has expressed a desire for mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia, he has also threatened to increase pressure on Moscow, including through sanctions,if he believes it is not negotiating in good faith over Ukraine.

Russia has consistently criticized Western sanctions, calling them illegal, and maintained that they have failed to inflict lasting economic damage. Moscow has also expressed a willingness to resolve the conflict and announced a unilateral three-day ceasefire during Victory Day celebnrations. Kiev, however, rebuked the offer, instead demanding an immediate unconditional 30-day truce.

“The goal is to help the president… He talked about being frustrated,” Graham told reporters, as cited by Bloomberg. In a post on Truth Social earlier this week, Trump suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin might not want to stop the war, is “just tapping me along” and may need to be “dealt with differently, through banking or secondary sanctions.”

According to Bloomberg, Graham’s bill includes a ban on US citizens purchasing Russian sovereign debt and a 500% tariff on imports from countries that buy Russian oil, petroleum products, natural gas, and uranium. Graham, a Republican from South Carolina,claimed he has secured the commitment of 72 Senators for his bill, from both parties, and enough support in the House of Representatives to bring it to the floor.

“I want a negotiated end to the war, honorably and just. I think Trump’s the best person to achieve that goal, but these sanctions representthe Senate’s view that we see the primary bad guy being Russia,” the senator stated, calling the bill “a tool in President Trump’s toolbox.”

“When President Trump believes that we’ve reached an impasse, then watch for action,”Graham stated, warning that the measures, if enacted, would “crush” the Russian economy.

The White House did not respond to a Bloomberg request for comment on Graham’s claims. The senator, a veteran foreign policy hawk,has previously called the killing of Russians by Ukrainian troops “the best money”the US had ever spent.

(Graham is doing this on purpose to prevent a peace deal, he hasn’t stolen enough money yet. He knows when peace is achieved all his dirty deeds will be revealed.)

MESSENGER's Last Day on Mercury

The first to orbit inner planet Mercury, the MESSENGER spacecraft came to rest on this region of Mercury's surface on April 30, 2015. Constructed from MESSENGER image and laser altimeter data, the projected scene looks north over the northeastern rim of the broad, lava filled Shakespeare basin. The large, 48 kilometer (30 mile) wide crater Janacek is near the upper left edge. Terrain height is color coded with red regions about 3 kilometers above blue ones. MESSENGER'S final orbit was predicted to end near the center, with the spacecraft impacting the surface at nearly 4 kilometers per second (over 8,700 miles per hour) and creating a new crater about 16 meters (52 feet) in diameter. The impact on the far side of Mercury was not observed by telescopes, but confirmed when no signal was detected from the spacecraft given time to emerge from behind the planet. Launched in 2004, the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemisty and Ranging spacecraft completed over 4,000 orbits after reaching the Solar System's innermost planet in 2011.

Love Ham Radio? The HamSCI project fosters collaboration between amateur radio operators and professional researchers.

Its goals are to advance scientific research and understanding through amateur radio activities, encourage the development of modern technologies to support this research, and provide educational opportunities for the amateur community and the public.

HamSCI held its annual Workshop, 'HamSCI's Big Year', at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in late March.

Over 100 members of the HamSCI community attended: researchers, students (secondary through graduate level), and citizen scientist volunteers.

Over the two-day event, in-person and virtual participants experienced twenty-five talks on topics ranging from analysis of HamSCI's 2023/24 Festivals of Eclipse Ionospheric Science events to space weather observations made during the May 10, 2024 geomagnetic superstorm.

The Workshop hosted a variety of Keynote and Invited Tutorial speakers, including distinguished scientists and leaders in the Amateur (ham) Radio community.

The Workshop concluded with a poster session, featuring current research, ongoing educational activities, and concepts for future events involving Sun-space-Earth science topics.

Posters were submitted from the US, Brazil, Egypt, the United Kingdom, and Turkey.

Explore the workshop presentations and posters. Videos of conference presentations will be available at the HamSCI website in a few months.

The best candidate yet for the elusive Planet Nine has been spotted in two deep infrared surveys taken 23 years apart.

If this mystery object really is Planet Nine, it would have a mass greater than Neptune, and currently be about 700 times farther from the sun than Earth is.

The possibility of additional planets in our solar system has been proposed many times, going under names such as "Planet X," because experts thought the concept of an extra planet in our vicinity of the cosmos could explain a perceived regularity in mass extinctions on Earth.

Perhaps, they said, the periodic influx of comets that impact Earth are pushed our way by an unseen planet. However, the supposed periodicity in mass extinctions has not held up to scrutiny, and so the need for that particular Planet X has gone away.

This brings us to Planet Nine.

Planet Nine is unrelated to the Planet X concept, and rather put forward in 2016 by Michael Brown and Konstantin Batygin of the California Institute of Technology to explain an unusual bunching of orbits of some objects in the Kuiper Belt, such as Sedna.

This proposed Planet Nine would be more massive than Earth, and orbit on a highly eccentric path that takes it hundreds of astronomical units from the sun (one astronomical unit is the distance between Earth and the sun).

That far away, it would be extremely difficult to detect.

However, the expectation is that Planet Nine would appear brighter in mid- and far-infrared light than it would in visible light.

Now, a team led by astronomer Terry Long Phan of the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan has delved into the archives of two far-infrared all-sky surveys in search of Planet Nine — and incredibly, they have found something that could possibly be Planet Nine.

The Infrared Astronomy Satellite, IRAS, launched in 1983 and surveyed the universe for almost a year before being decommissioned.

Then, in 2006, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched AKARI, another infrared astronomy satellite that was active between 2006 and 2011.

Phan's team were looking for objects that appeared in IRAS's database, then appeared to have moved by the time AKARI took a look.

The amount of movement on the sky would be tiny — about three arcminutes per year at a distance of approximately 700 astronomical units (AU). One arcminute is 1/60 of an angular degree.

But there's an extra motion that Phan's team had to account for. As the Earth orbits the sun, our view of the position of very distant objects changes slightly in an effect called parallax.

It is the same phenomenon as when you hold your index finger up to your face, close one eye and look at your finger, and then switch eyes — your finger appears to move as a result of you looking at it from a slightly different position.

Planet Nine would appear to move on the sky because of parallax as Earth moves around the sun.

On any particular day, it might seem to be in one position, then six months later when Earth is on the other side of the sun, it would shift to another position, perhaps by 10 to 15 arcminutes — then, six months after that, it would seem to shift back to its original position.

To remove the effects of parallax, Phan's team searched for Planet Nine on the same date every year in the AKARI data, because on any given date it would appear in the same place, with zero parallax shift, every year.

They then also scrutinized each candidate object that their search threw up on an hourly basis. If a candidate is a fast-moving, nearby object, then its motion would be detectable from hour to hour, and could therefore be ruled out.

This careful search led Phan's team to a single object, a tiny dot in the infrared data.

US rejected Ukraine’s security guarantee demands – NYT

Washington reportedly refused to include any formal commitments early in the negotiation process

The US has rejected Ukraine’s request for security guarantees as part of a newly signed mineral resources agreement, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the talks.

The nine-page deal, signed the same day after months of negotiations and published on Thursday by the Ukrainian government, gives Washington preferential access to Ukraine’s mineral projects, including rare-earth metals. It also establishes a joint investment fund to support Ukraine’s post-conflict reconstruction.

Despite its scope,the final agreement contains no formal pledge of future US military support, a key demand from Ukraine during negotiations.

Instead, it vaguely mentions a “long-term strategic alignment” and promises US backing for Ukraine’s “security, prosperity, reconstruction, and integration into global economic frameworks.”

One source told the NYT that the US dismissed the idea of providing Kiev with explicit security guarantees early in the talks. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce defended the agreement, suggesting that US involvement alone offers implicit protection.

“When America is your friend and your partner, your nation is going to be better off. And there is a security component just in our presence,” she told Fox Business.

Analysts told the NYT that the deal could help secure US President Donald Trump’s continued interest in Ukraine now that he is directly invested, and will potentially open the door to further discussions on military aid and a ceasefire with Russia. Still, critics argued that without binding guarantees, the deal’s impact may be limited if the conflict continues.

Ukraine’s parliament is expected to ratify the agreement within two weeks. The US has framed the deal as a way for Ukraine to repay past military aid – estimated at $350 billion by Trump, though Kiev claims the figure is closer to $100 billion and that the support was unconditional.The debt repayment clause, however, was dropped from the final text. After signing, Trump said the US could “in theory” recover “much more” than $350 billion through the deal.

Commenting on the deal, deputy head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said the US has essentially “forced the Kiev regime to pay for American aid with minerals,” warning thatall future military supplies will have to be paid “with the national wealth of a vanishing country.”

US-Ukraine deal ‘important step to end war’ – Rubio

The US secretary of state highlighted the importance of the long-drafted agreement with Kiev as Washington negotiates with Moscow to end the conflict

The natural resource deal signed between Washington and Kiev is an “important step” toward ending the Ukraine conflict, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed.

The long-awaited agreement, which allows Washington to tap into Ukraine’s extensive mineral reserves in return for assistance with the country’s economic recovery, was signed on Wednesday.

Notably, the document does not include any provisions for the US to offer security guarantees to Ukraine, despite this being “one of its initial goals,” as reported by Reuters. The New York Times indicated that the concept of security guarantees was dismissed by the US “early in the process.”

In an X post on Thursday, Rubio thanked US President’s Donald Trump leadership, under which the deal was signed. Rubio called it “a milestone in our shared prosperity and an important step in ending this war.”

Negotiations for the agreement stretched on for several months, although both parties intended to finalize it during Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky’s visit to the White House in late February. The televised meeting led to a tense confrontation during which Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of ingratitude and “gambling with World War III.”

This comes as Washington is in talks with Moscow over a possible peace deal that would end the Ukraine conflict.

Multiple media sources indicate that the agreement put forward by Washington entailsthe US recognizing Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea. Additionally, the proposal reportedly includes a “freezing” of the conflict along the existing front line and an acknowledgment of Moscow’s control over significant portions of four former Ukrainian regions that voted to join Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a halt to all military operations against Ukrainian forces from midnight on May 7 until midnight on May 10, stating that this is being done for “humanitarian reasons.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointed out that Russia considers the ceasefire “the start of direct negotiations with Kiev without preconditions.”

Zelensky branded Moscow’s three-day truce declaration a “manipulation attempt,” saying he wanted an immediate 30-day ceasefire instead. According to Lavrov, “a [30-day] ceasefire in this situation is considered a precondition that will be used to further support the Kiev regime and strengthen its military capabilities.”

Superhero self-healing polymer can protect satellites from fast-flying space debris

Space debris is becoming an overwhelming problem.

Between 2019 and 2023, SpaceX’s Starlink satellites made more than 50,000 collision avoidance maneuvers in low Earth orbit (LEO).

In LEO, objects fly at speeds of roughly 8 kilometers per second – faster than a bullet.

As collision avoidance becomes more challenging, scientists are increasingly looking at alternative methods for combating the space debris problem.

One team of material scientists at Texas A&M University has developed a polymer with a unique self-healing property.

When struck by space debris, it would stretch enough to allow the object to pass through without causing major structural damage.

A unique new space material

The team called their material a Diels-Adler Polymer (DAP) due to its dynamic covalent bond networks that can break and reform.

“While other Diels-Adler networks have been reported in the scientific literature, DAP’s specific chemistry, topology and self-healing quality are novel,” the scientists explained a press statement.

The DAP structure consists of long polymer chains containing double carbon bonds. These break when subjected to great heat and force, but they quickly reform when cooled – though this may be in a different configuration.

The team, who published their findings in the journal Materials Today, believe the new material has great potential for space applications. It’s worth noting that they have only tested it in a laboratory setting at the nanoscale.

“This is the first time a material at any scale has displayed this behavior,” Dr. Svetlana Sukhishvili, a professor in the Texas A&M University Department of Materials Science and Engineering, explained in the statement.

“Besides being very cool, the new polymer will likely have many applications, including making the windows of space vehicles more resilient to the onslaught of micrometeoroids,” Materials science and engineering professor Dr. Edwin Thomas added.

Potential space and military applications

For their research, the Texas A&M University team set out to develop a material that could protect structures such as orbital satellites and space vehicles from micrometeoroids and debris.

Having tested the material, they believe it could also be used for body armor and other military applications on Earth.

“Polymers are amazing materials, especially DAP materials,” Thomas explained.

“Because at low temperatures, they are stiff and strong; then at higher temperatures, they become elastic; and at still higher temperatures, they become an easily flowing liquid. That’s a huge range of property behavior.”

The team subjected their polymer to a new, state-of-the-art form of ballistic testing called LIPIT (laser-induced projectile impact testing).

This method laser-launches a tiny silica 3.7 micrometer-diameter projectile at the target polymer. This was recorded using an ultrahigh-speed camera with a 3-nanosecond exposure time at 50 nanosecond intervals.

A ‘self-healing’ polymer

To begin with, the scientists thought the projectile might have missed the polymer during testing, as they didn’t see any perforations. In truth, they had discovered the materials “self-healing” properties.

To be precise, the team had found that their new solid polymer film melts when impacted by a laser-launched high-speed projectile. After the impact, it then cools down and snaps back into its original shape.

According to the team’s statement, the polymer absorbs “much of the kinetic energy generated by the projectile, causing the film to stretch and liquify as the projectile continues its journey, finally piercing the film.

Once pierced, the polymer quickly cools, its covalent bonds reform, and it returns to its original solid state, leaving a tiny hole.”

Musk labels WSJ ‘a discredit to journalism’

The outlet has published a “deliberately false” piece about him, the world’s richest man has said

Elon Musk has branded the Wall Street Journal a “discredit to journalism,” categorically denying the outlet’s claim that Tesla’s board wants to replace him as the CEO of the electric car company.

The WSJ claimed, citing anonymous sources, that about a month ago Tesla’s board reached out to a number of executive search firms to work on a formal process for finding a new CEO. The directors “got serious” after Tesla’s stock plunged and investors got “irritated” by Musk’s focus on his job as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Tesla Chair Robyn Denholm issued a statement in whichshe called the report “absolutely false.”

“The CEO of Tesla is Elon Musk and the board is highly confident in his ability to continue executing on the exciting growth plan ahead,” Denholm stressed.

Musk reacted to the report on his X platform on Thursday, insisting that “it is an extremely bad breach of ethics that the Wall Street Journal would publish a deliberately false article” and slammed the outlet for its failure to include the Tesla board’s “unequivocal denial”of claims that it is searching for a new CEO in its article.

In a separate comment, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO labeled the WSJ a “discredit to journalism.”

Tesla suffered a 71% drop in profits and a 9% decline in revenue for the first quarter of 2025, during which time Musk became an increasingly polarizing figure, due to his close ties to US President Donald Trump and his work as the head of the DOGE, an agency tasked with slashing government spending.

Since January, dozens of Tesla-linked locations have been hit by protests, in what Musk claims is a coordinated effort bankrolled by major Democratic donors. There have also been violent attacks, including arson attempts, on the company’s dealerships, vehicles and charging stations.

A week ago, Musk announced that he will scale back his government role because the “major work” to establish DOGE has now been completed. During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump thanked the tech billionaire for his contribution, saying “you know you are invited to stay as long as you want... I guess he wants to get back home to his cars.”

RAF Typhoons Joined U.S. Forces in Joint Attack on Houthi Drone Factory

As the U.S. continues its combat operations, the UK Ministry of Defence announced on Apr. 30, 2025 that RAF Typhoons conducted new airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

These airstrikes are the first announced combat operations undertaken by the UK against the Houthis since January, and the first since the inauguration of President Trump.

RAF Typhoons had previously joined with U.S. operations against the Houthis throughout 2024 flying from their forward base at RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus.

In a statement to the House of Commons, Secretary of State for Defence John Healey detailed that “intelligence analysis identified a cluster of buildings 15 miles south of Sanaa used by the Houthis to manufacture drones of the type used to attack ships in the Red Sea and in the gulf of Aden.”

He added that the operation involved the use of Paveway IV precision guided bombs, and was supported by Voyager air-to-air refueling aircraft.

RAF Voyagers have been noted providing refueling support to U.S. Navy aircraft on several occasions during anti-Houthi sorties.

A detachment of Typhoon FGR4s has been based at RAF Akrotiri with the 903 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) since 2015, when the UK Parliament voted in favour of extending airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq across the border into Syria.

The force’s primary role has remained supporting Operation Shader – the UK’s effort against ISIS – although with evolving defence requirements and the overall weakening of ISIS they have assumed additional responsibilities.

Along with anti-Houthi strikes, they have also contributed to air policing measures instituted following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and regularly provide RAF RC-135 Rivet Joint aircraft with defensive cover over the Black Sea following a 2022 close encounter.

The drawdown of Operation Shader was announced in 2024, and was expected to be completed during 2025, however it is possible that many deployed assets will remain in the region under a new operational name that reflects the additional taskings now placed upon them.

Akrotiri is the most convenient location for forward based aircraft to support all of these taskings from one location, and being UK administered territory likely simplifies diplomatic clearance processes, although for operations against the Houthis it does mean a lengthy 3,000 mile round trip along the Red Sea.

The relatively small force of Typhoons and tankers at Akrotiri also means, while aircraft are participating in these long-distance raids, there is little availability for any other taskings.

With the Prince of Wales carrier strike group (CSG) now in the Mediterranean Sea and eventually bound for a Red Sea transit, it is possible that we will see F-35B Lightning IIs from the aircraft carrier join future airstrikes.

A similar situation happened in 2021, when F-35Bs from HMS Queen Elizabeth joined Operation Shader as the carrier passed through the region.

Carrier-based F-35s will share the advantage utilised by the U.S. Navy in being able to position their floating airfields within an optimal striking distance of intended targets, although this also places the ships at increased risk of attack.

We saw a case of this on Apr. 28 when an inbound attack led to the USS Harry S. Truman taking evasive maneuvers, causing an embarked F/A-18E Super Hornet to be lost overboard.

ndia has closed its airspace to all Pakistan-linked aircraft, including military flights, as tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors continue to mount following a deadly terrorist attack in the Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir.

The move comes in response to last week’s decision by Islamabad to bar Indian-owned or operated airlines from Pakistani airspace.

A Notice to Air Missions, which was published by New Delhi on Wednesday, said: “Indian airspace [is] not available to Pakistan registered aircraft and aircraft operated or leased by Pakistan airlines. These include military flights.”

The announcement means that India and Pakistan have now blocked their airspace to each other until at least May 23.

The only Pakistani carrier currently operating routes through India is Pakistan International Airlines, which flies to Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The escalation between India and Pakistan started after the April 22 terrorist attack in India’s Jammu and Kashmir federal territory, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.

New Delhi blamed the incident on Islamabad, accusing the neighboring country’s government of supporting cross-border terrorism and insurgency.

Islamabad denied the allegations, calling for an impartial investigation into the incident and accusing New Delhi of backing “terrorist networks” operating on Pakistani soil.

The two countries have a long-standing dispute over Kashmir, which is de facto divided by the Line of Control established after the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971.

Since the attack, India has ordered the expulsion of all Pakistanis from the country, the closure of the border between the two nations, and the suspension of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty.

Pakistan responded by suspending all bilateral trade, including through third countries, halting special South Asian visas issued to Indian nationals, along with other tit-for-tat measures.

A group of detainees at an immigration detention facility in Texas formed an SOS message this week that was captured by a Reuters drone as some fear deportation to a notorious El Salvador prison, video released by the news agency on Wednesday showed.

Thirty-one men detained at Bluebonnet Detention Facility in the small town of Anson, Texas, formed the letters in the dirt field after spotting the drone on Monday.

Video shows the men in red and orange jumpsuits waving to the camera, and one person making the "peace" hand sign, before forming the message.

The S-O-S message, meaning "save our souls," is an international code signifying extreme distress and used as a plea for help.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, located roughly 200 miles west of Dallas and 24 miles north of Abilene, has been a target of the Trump administration and its use of the Alien Enemies Act to target those they claim are members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

The Supreme Court on April 19 temporarily blocked the deportation of any Venezuelans held at the facility after a last-minute plea from several lawyers of men who claim they were suddenly accused of being TdA members, according to the Associated Press.

The families of seven such men told Reuters that they were not gang members and refused to sign any such documentation.

The Trump administration has repeatedly used a rarely-used law from the 1700s to justify deporting detainees, some without trials, to prisons outside the country, like El Salvador's notorious CECOT.

The prison once held deported Maryland man Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whose deportation before a trial warranted concerns from several federal judges, the Supreme Court, and democratic lawmakers despite the administration's efforts to keep him and many others overseas.

Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today it received 14 pages of records from U.S. Customs and Border Protection in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that show border agents seized drones transporting methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl across the U.S. southern and northern borders.

The records were produced in response to a March 16, 2022, FOIA request for:

Any and all records maintained by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security concerning

(1) drones recovered or seized along the United States and Mexico Border

(2) type and quantity of any illegal drugs seized from those drones recovered or seized drones

(3) location where drones were seized or recovered

(4) arrests or convictions resulting from illegal drugs being transported across the United States border via any type of drone

(5) confirmed or suspected incidents where decoy drones were used to draw agents to a fake drug drop site.

The newly obtained records include a September 21, 2022, Customs and Border Protection “Significant Incident Report,” describing activity in New York:

At approximately 0200hrs on 09/21/22, Agents of [redacted] Station in conjunction with [redacted] were notified that [redacted] identified a DJI M300 drone originating in the United States had entered Canada.

The drone landed and spent approximately 10 minutes in Canada. The drone returned to the United States to [redacted] NY where agents were waiting and observed the drone and an attached package, land in the back yard.

Agents entered the property and encountered the drone pilot and an unknown number of additional subjects. At that time, all subjects fled the yard and entered the house. Agents in hot pursuit, entered the house and took the pilot into custody.

An unknown number of subjects absconded from the house into the surrounding neighborhood and 2 additional subjects were later taken into custody. All subjects were identified as Chinese nationals, claiming U.S. citizenship.

The house was cleared for potential people and no evidence was seized at that time. At this time, the house is secured pending a search warrant from federal district court to enter the residence and seize evidence.

At this time, there is a potential to seize a house, 2 vehicles, the package of suspected narcotics, several drones and associated hardware and an unknown quantity of cash.

The suspected narcotics were field tested using the [redacted] and tested positive for the properties of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) with a weight of 3123 grams [6.88 lbs.].

An October 7, 2021, Customs and Border Protection “Evolving Situation Report” on “Drug Seizure” describes activity in California:

9:28 AM….

[A]t approximately 0840 hrs., a drone [redacted] made an incursion in [redacted] west of [redacted] POE [point of entry]. Agents on the ground observed the drone drop a white package as it hovered over a parking lot west of the [redacted] California POE, [redacted]….

12:29 At approximately 0850, agents on the ground were able to seize the drone along with a small package filled with a white powder substance at the following location [redacted].

2 USC’s [likely referring to U.S. citizens] were arrested in connection with the drone and transported to [redacted]. Agents from [redacted] responded to interview the subjects.

The white powder will be transported to the [redacted] checkpoint to be identified utilizing a [redacted] narcotics analyzer….

17:15 The white powder was tested and determined to be methamphetamine with a weight of .26 kilograms [over ½ lb] and a street value of $1500. The drone and meth have been transported to [redacted] and placed into the [redacted].

An April 29, 2020, Customs and Border Protection “Significant Incident Report” describes activity in Arizona:

[A]t approximately 1705 hours [redacted] Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) in the field notified the [redacted] Border Patrol Station Duty Desk [redacted] regarding a downed drone containing possible narcotics. Supervisory Boder Patrol Agents … arrived on scene and photographed the evidence.

BPAs seized and transported the drone and possible narcotics to [redacted] Station. The Yuma Sector Evidence Team … was notified and responded to the [redacted] Station for testing and fingerprinting.

Watch: Soldiers in helicopter drop outside Tesco

The training exercise in Manchester led some to suggest there must have been ‘good bargains on the reduced counter’

Soldiers have been spotted dropping from helicopters outside a Tesco supermarket in Manchester.

Onlookers captured the scene on video, which showed figures climbing down ropes out of two helicopters.

The Telegraph understands that a routine training exercise involving British military personnel was recently completed in Manchester.

The troops, who were dressed in dark clothing, landed on a roof thought to be in an industrial estate in Baguley on Monday, before running inside.

The aircraft, which are thought to be unmarked Eurocopter Dauphin helicopters, are used by the SAS for covert transport and fast-roping insertion into missions.

They are said to adopt civilian paint schemes in order to blend in with commercial air traffic.

Vinay Mathew Punnamthanam filmed the scene after he had been food shopping.

He said: “I was in Baguley Tesco, and it happened just behind that. I really don’t know what happened.

“Two helicopters came, they dropped people and left. I was in a hurry, so I couldn’t ask anyone about it.”

Meanwhile social media users debated what happened.

Ian Harwood wrote: “I heard a helicopter going over us which didn’t show up on Flight Radar so I assumed it must have been military.”

Dave Johnson added: “SAS training on Virgin Media building in Baguley.”

Other suggestions included, “maybe they are just popping in to pick up a meal deal” and “either there’s some good bargains on the reduced counter, or more likely a training exercise.”

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “UK military personnel train in a variety of locations to ensure they are ready for a broad spectrum of scenarios.”

This passage in particular, from David Horowitz's son Ben's eulogy for him, struck a cord with one commenter (emphasis ours):

Records show Minneapolis schools were overbilled by millions on a transportation contract.

Frontier Transportation Services, LLC is operated by two men named Falmata Bedasso and Abdurahman Kadir, according to secretary of state records. The company, which transports “Homeless and Highly Mobile” (HHM) students, was authorized to receive, at most, $3.6 million from Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) for services through 2027, contract and school board records show. But by early 2025, the district had already been billed well above that amount, according to the most recent contracts and invoices.

In total, all of the invoices provided by the district in response to the request add up to more than $7 million.

The timing is hard to ignore: a new state law took effect in 2023 guaranteeing school districts 100% reimbursement for transportation costs tied to HHM students, according to Minneapolis Schools Voices.

Unlike traditional school buses, Frontier relies on Type III minivans to transport students, which are limited to a maximum of 10 passengers, including the driver.

MPS admitted through a public data request that it does not have any copies of vehicle inventories provided by Frontier Transportation Services despite the contract requiring “a vehicle inventory of all vehicles planned to be used to provide service.”
