George Soros is doing his best to undermine justice in America by funding leftist prosecutors throughout the country, former U.S. Attorney Joseph diGenova said Monday.

DiGenova was speaking regarding the Minneapolis-area Hennepin County Attorney, Mary Moriarty, whom the DOJ recently opened a probe into due to her allegedly giving preferential treatment to minorities in terms of plea deals.

“George Soros went around the country getting people like this elected to office, whose only purpose was to undermine the effectiveness of the criminal justice system and to go easy on criminals," diGenova told Newsmax.

“This is really quite outrageous that the people of Minnesota have accepted this, and they go along with it,” diGenova added.

Moriarty was recently sent a letter from Attorney General Pam Bondi, Acting Associate Attorney General Chad Mizelle and Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon, informing her that the DOJ is investigating whether the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office “engaged in a pattern of practice of depriving persons of rights, privileges or immunities secured or protect by the Constitution or laws of the United States.”

“In particular, the investigation will focus on whether HCAO engages in illegal consideration of race in its prosecutorial decision-making,” the letter stated, adding that the investigation will include “a comprehensive review of all relevant HCAO policies and practices that may involve the illegal consideration of race in prosecutorial decision-making.”

For years, the FBI misled the public by classifying the 2017 congressional baseball shooting, which nearly killed pro-life House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, as a “suicide by cop” rather than an act of domestic terrorism

That’s the report the House Intelligence Committee revealed Tuesday. The findings expose what Republicans call a politically motivated cover-up by the bureau under then-Acting Director Andrew McCabe.

On June 14, 2017, James Hodgkinson, a left-wing activist and fervent supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders, opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia. Hodgkinson, who had posted anti-Trump vitriol online and carried a hit list of GOP congressmen, asked if the players were Republicans before unleashing a barrage of bullets. Scalise was gravely wounded, nearly bleeding to death, while lobbyist Matt Mika and two Capitol Police officers were also injured.

Later evidence showed the shooter wanted to target and kill other pro-life Republicans.

Despite clear evidence of political motivation, the FBI, led by McCabe, insisted the attack was not terrorism but an attempt by Hodgkinson to provoke his own death at the hands of police. This designation, Republicans argue, downplayed the shooter’s ideological hatred for conservatives and shielded the left from scrutiny.

“Whatever its political purpose, the FBI’s starting position was that the shooter was suicidal, hoping to die by gunfire with police. It appears to the Committee that investigative efforts and intelligence analysis then attempted to reinforce the ‘suicide by cop’ argument despite the clear and contrary facts of the case,” the new House report concludes.

The House Intelligence Committee report, spearheaded by Republicans, found that the FBI’s initial classification was influenced by internal politics, though Democrats on the committee disputed this claim. The report highlights that both the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence labeled the attack as domestic violent extremism, in stark contrast to the FBI’s stance.

It wasn’t until 2021, after relentless pressure from GOP lawmakers, that the FBI reclassified the shooting as domestic terrorism, admitting Hodgkinson was a “domestic violent extremist” targeting Republicans. The reversal came quietly, buried in a report appendix, with no public apology or explanation for the years of obfuscation.

Scalise, who endured multiple surgeries and months of recovery, slammed the FBI’s handling of the case.

“This report definitively shows the FBI completely mishandled the investigation into the Congressional baseball shooting of 2017 – ignoring crucial and obvious facts in order to sell a false narrative that the shooting was not politically motivated. I want to thank FBI Director Kash Patel, Chairman Rick Crawford, and the staff of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence for finally getting to the truth of the matter: this was a deliberate and planned act of domestic terrorism toward Republican Members of Congress.

“I encourage Director Patel to adopt the recommendations of the Committee to ensure the intelligence community is rid of bias and to identify who was responsible for the misleading and incorrect conclusions and why, and ensure the FBI gets back to its mission of following the facts, wherever they may lead.”

No one was taken into custody at the location.

But M81 left M82 with violent star forming regions and colliding gas clouds so energetic the galaxy glows in X-rays. This big battle is seen from Earth through the faint glow of an Integrated Flux Nebula, a little studied complex of diffuse gas and dust clouds in our Milky Way Galaxy. In a few billion years, only one galaxy will remain.

A former porn star who allegedly shot up one of President Trump’s Florida resorts before claiming to have been Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex slave had signed an NDA with the disgraced rapper, according to a report Wednesday.

Jonathan Oddi was arrested in 2018 after he was reportedly caught on camera carrying a US flag and ranting about the president as he stormed into the lobby of the Trump National Doral Golf Club before getting into a shootout with cops.

Following his arrest, Oddi made a series of claims to police, including that he had been kept as a “sex slave” by Combs, video from the interview shows.

“I had sex with Cassie [Ventura] and Sean [Combs]. Basically, he would masturbate and tell me what to do to Cassie. I was like a sex slave. For them, that’s what I was,” Oddi said.

A picture of an NDA allegedly signed by Oddi and Combs in Miami in 2014 emerged Wednesday — seemingly backing up the former porn star’s ties with the rapper, who is facing trial for alleged sex abuse and trafficking.

Oddi said he agreed to the NDA in exchange for $5 million — and it was signed around the same time as he divorced his wife, attorney Tonia Troutwine, she told the Daily Mail, which first published the document.

“The date of that contract was around the same time as our divorce. I almost feel like he divorced me because he came to all this money and so I wouldn’t claim it,” Troutwine said.

“But our lives were already going in different paths. I started feeling like a third wheel in someone else’s life rather than a wife,” she added.

Oddi started to change after moving from his job as a stripper at bachelorette parties to becoming a porn star, Troutwine said.

He met Diddy around this time at a party at the ultra-exclusive Star Island in Miami Beach, Troutwine believes.

Human Landing Systems

NASA’s Human Landing System (HLS) Program is working with two U.S. companies to develop landers that will safely carry astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the Moon and back throughout the agency’s Artemis campaign: SpaceX for Artemis III and Artemis IV, and Blue Origin for Artemis V.

Beginning with Artemis III, the lander will be launched uncrewed to lunar orbit to wait for the crew.

Launching atop NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket, the Orion spacecraft will bring the astronauts from Earth to the lander in lunar orbit. A crew of two will transfer to the lander from Orion and descend to the Moon’s surface.

For later crewed missions, astronauts will use NASA’s Gateway

lunar space station for crew transfer.

For early Artemis missions, the landers will also serve as living quarters for the astronauts while on the Moon. The crew will collect samples, perform science experiments, test new technologies, and observe the Moon’s environment.

When the surface mission concludes, the crew will return to lunar orbit in the lander to meet up with their crewmates and head home to Earth in Orion.

Partnering with U.S. industry bolsters the American space economy and industrial base while reducing costs to taxpayers.

NASA shares its knowledge and expertise with both SpaceX and Blue Origin and maintains oversight of safety while the companies develop, test, and mature their lander designs.

NASA also formally collaborates with industry through task agreements that provide engineering expertise and unique facilities to help solve some of human spaceflight’s most challenging issues.

Leveraging NASA’s unique and historic experience in lunar exploration, paired with the speed and innovation of industry, the HLS Program is providing the key lunar landing capability for Artemis to achieve a long-term human presence in deep space.

Innovative Landing Systems

NASA is working with SpaceX to develop a lunar lander version of the company’s Starship to carry astronauts from lunar orbit to the Moon’s surface and back during Artemis III. For this mission, the Starship HLS will dock directly with Orion in lunar orbit.

For the Artemis IV mission, NASA is working with SpaceX to further develop the Starship HLS to meet an extended set of requirements, such as docking with Gateway for crew transfer and landing more mass on the lunar surface.

In order to ensure a robust landing capability, NASA is also working with Blue Origin to develop a crewed lunar version of the company’s Blue Moon lander.

The Blue Moon HLS will be used during the Artemis V mission and will meet the same set of requirements as the Starship HLS for Artemis IV.

Large Cargo Delivery Landers

In addition to the landers that will be used for astronauts, the HLS program is also working with its industry providers to develop cargo versions of their crew landers to deliver large pieces of equipment and infrastructure, such as rovers and habitats, to the Moon’s surface in support of exploration.

Engineers, technicians, mission planners, and the four astronauts set to fly around the Moon next year on Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed Artemis mission, are rapidly progressing toward launch.

At the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, teams are working around the clock to move into integration and final testing of all SLS (Space Launch System) and Orion spacecraft elements.

Recently they completed two key milestones – connecting the SLS upper stage with the rest of the assembled rocket and moving Orion from its assembly facility to be fueled for flight.

“We’re extremely focused on preparing for Artemis II, and the mission is nearly here,” said Lakiesha Hawkins, assistant deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Moon to Mars Program, who also will chair the mission management team during Artemis II.

“This crewed test flight, which will send four humans around the Moon, will inform our future missions to the Moon and Mars.”

On May 1, technicians successfully attached the interim cryogenic propulsion stage to the SLS rocket elements already poised atop mobile launcher 1, including its twin solid rocket boosters and core stage, inside the spaceport’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).

This portion of the rocket produces 24,750 pounds of thrust for Orion after the rest of the rocket has completed its job.

Teams soon will move into a series of integrated tests to ensure all the rocket’s elements are communicating with each other and the Launch Control Center as expected.

The tests include verifying interfaces and ensuring SLS systems work properly with the ground systems.

Meanwhile, on May 3, Orion left its metaphorical nest, the Neil Armstrong Operations & Checkout Facility at Kennedy, where it was assembled and underwent initial testing.

There the crew module was outfitted with thousands of parts including critical life support systems for flight and integrated with the service module and crew module adapter.

Its next stop on the road to the launch pad is the Multi-Payload Processing Facility, where it will be carefully fueled with propellants, high pressure gases, coolant, and other fluids the spacecraft and its crew need to maneuver in space and carry out the mission.

After fueling is complete, the four astronauts flying on the mission around the Moon and back over the course of approximately 10 days, will board the spacecraft in their Orion Crew Survival System spacesuits to test all the equipment interfaces they will need to operate during the mission.

This will mark the first time NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, will board their actual spacecraft while wearing their spacesuits.

After the crewed testing is complete, technicians will move Orion to Kennedy’s Launch Abort System Facility, where the critical escape system will be added.

From there, Orion will move to the VAB to be integrated with the fully assembled rocket.

Crew Spends Tuesday Focused on Health Research

A full suite of human health research kept the Expedition 73 crew busy Tuesday aboard the International Space Station.

Current station commander Takuya Onishi of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) started the day powering on and setting up the Ultrasound 2 device to assist NASA Flight Engineer Jonny Kim with an eye exam that looks at optic nerve health.

Following the exam, Kim donned a lightweight thigh cuff while Onishi guided a cardiovascular ultrasound scan to measure Kim’s vision and blood flow changes.

This ongoing health research is helping scientists better understand if wearing a device like the thigh cuff could prevent upward blood and fluid shifts.

Onishi then moved on to collect and process water samples from the Potable Water Dispenser before continuing to unpack a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft which arrived to the station April 22.

Meanwhile, Kim photographed tomato plants for a space agricultural study before assisting NASA Flight Engineer Anne McClain with additional health research.

McClain spent her morning on Dragon cargo operations then focused the rest of her day on a collection of human health research for the CIPHER study, or the Complement of Integrated Protocols for Human Exploration Research.

CIPHER takes a full-body approach to investigate how multiple systems of the body react to spaceflight, which could help prepare future crews on missions to the Moon and beyond.

McClain collected biological samples for analysis by ground teams, then received an ultrasound scan guided by Kim that looks at the health of the back of her eye.

In the Columbus Laboratory Module, NASA Flight Engineer Nichole Ayers set up and donned the Bio-Monitor, a garment and headband she’ll wear for the next 48 hours to investigate the effect of microgravity on the cardiovascular system.

Later on, she removed and replaced cable arm ropes on the orbital lab’s Advanced Resistive Exercise Device before moving on to Dragon cargo operations.

In the Roscosmos segment, Flight Engineer Alexey Zubritsky took inventory of storage areas then continued yesterday’s work with Flight Engineer Sergey Ryzhikov to install hardware for an experiment that will examine the station’s aerodynamic force.

Their colleague, Flight Engineer Kirill Peskov, spent the day inventorying a variety of items including hygiene products, food, and more.

NASA’s NICER Maps Debris From Recurring Cosmic Crashes

For the first time, astronomers have probed the physical environment of repeating X-ray outbursts near monster black holes thanks to data from NASA’s NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer) and other missions.

Scientists have only recently encountered this class of X-ray flares, called QPEs, or quasi-periodic eruptions.

A system astronomers have nicknamed Ansky is the eighth QPE source discovered, and it produces the most energetic outbursts seen to date.

Ansky also sets records in terms of timing and duration, with eruptions every 4.5 days or so that last approximately 1.5 days.

“These QPEs are mysterious and intensely interesting phenomena,” said Joheen Chakraborty, a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.

“One of the most intriguing aspects is their quasi-periodic nature. We’re still developing the methodologies and frameworks we need to understand what causes QPEs, and Ansky’s unusual properties are helping us improve those tools.”

Ansky’s name comes from ZTF19acnskyy, the moniker of a visible-light outburst seen in 2019.

It was located in a galaxy about 300 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. This event was the first indication that something unusual might be happening.

A leading theory suggests that QPEs occur in systems where a relatively low-mass object passes through the disk of gas surrounding a supermassive black hole that holds hundreds of thousands to billions of times the Sun’s mass.

When the lower-mass object punches through the disk, its passage drives out expanding clouds of hot gas that we observe as QPEs in X-rays.

Scientists think the eruptions' quasi-periodicity occurs because the smaller object’s orbit is not perfectly circular and spirals toward the black hole over time.

Also, the extreme gravity close to the black hole warps the fabric of space-time, altering the object’s orbits so they don’t close on themselves with each cycle.

Scientists’ current understanding suggests the eruptions repeat until the disk disappears or the orbiting object disintegrates, which may take up to a few years.

“Ansky’s extreme properties may be due to the nature of the disk around its supermassive black hole,” said Lorena Hernández-García, an astrophysicist at the Millennium Nucleus on Transversal Research and Technology to Explore Supermassive Black Holes, the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics, and University of Valparaíso in Chile.

“In most QPE systems the supermassive black hole likely shreds a passing star, creating a small disk very close to itself. In Ansky’s case, we think the disk is much larger and can involve objects farther away, creating the longer timescales we observe.”

President Donald Trump is expected to announce that he's renaming another body of water during his whirlwind trip next week to the Middle East.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday night that Trump will put his finger on the scale and say that the U.S. will now refer to the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia.

The body of water is situated between Iran and all three Arab nations that Trump will visit - Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates - in a four-day trip to the region departing from the White House Monday.

While the name 'Persian Gulf' has been around since the 16th century, in modern times many countries in the Middle East have started calling it the Gulf of Arabia or the Arabian Gulf.

They've done so to show their clout over Iran.

This has irritated Iran, formerly called Persia, whose government threatened to sue Google in 2012 over the company's decision not to name the body of water on all of its maps.

Ahead of the Middle East trip, Trump had touted that a major announcement was coming.

'We're going to have a very, very big announcement to make. Like, as big as it gets, and I won't tell you on what,' the president said Tuesday during an Oval Office Q&A alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

And it's very positive. It'll be one of the most important announcement that have been made in years about a certain subject,' the president teased.

It's unclear if the naming announcement was what he was referring to.

The U.S. military was already using Arabian Gulf in statements and photos.

Experts DailyMail.com spoke to ahead of the trip floated that Trump's big announcement was likely how much the Saudis would invest in the U.S.

The Arabian Gulf announcement will come as the U.S. has reinitiated talks with Iran after Trump scrapped the Obama-era nuclear deal during his first term.

Another round of nuclear talks are expected to take place in Oman this weekend.

Trump has made it clear that Iran absolutely cannot have a nuclear weapon.

'I want Iran to be really successful, really great, really fantastic,' he said during Sunday's Meet the Press interview. 'The only thing they can't have is a nuclear weapon. If they want to be successful, that's OK. I want them to be successful.'

'I just don't want them to have a nuclear weapon because the world will be destroyed,' the president added.

It wasn't immediately clear if the renaming of the Persian Gulf would interfere with those plans.

One of his opening acts on January 20th, inauguration day, was to proclaim that the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed the 'Gulf of America.'

When the Associated Press refused to change the Gulf's name in their influencial style guide, Trump pushed the wire service's reporters and photographers out of the press 'pool,' the group of journalists allowed into tight spaces including the Oval Office and on Air Force One.

The White House and the AP are still involved in litigation over the matter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday (May 7, 2025) that India was marching ahead with renewed confidence in the field of space exploration and its astronauts' footprints will be on the Moon.

Mars and Venus were also on the country's radar for exploration missions, he stressed, in a pre-recorded message for the Global Space Exploration Conference (GLEX) 2025.

PM Modi said for India, space was about exploration as well as empowerment, and listed out plans to set up the Bharatiya Antariksha Station by 2035 and land an Indian astronaut on the Moon by 2040.

"India's space journey is not about racing others. It is about reaching higher together.

Together, we share a common goal to explore space for the good of humanity," he said in the video message that was recorded on Tuesday (May 6, 2025.)

He said India has launched a satellite for the South Asian nations and the G20 satellite, announced during its presidency of the grouping, will be a gift to the Global South.

"Our first human space-flight mission, 'Gaganyaan', highlights our nation's rising aspirations," PM Modi said referring to the mission planned for early 2027 launch.

"By 2035, the Bharatiya Antariksha Station will open new frontiers in research and global cooperation. By 2040, an Indian's footprints will be on the Moon. Mars and Venus are also on our radar," he said.

He recalled that India's space journey started with the launch of a small rocket in 1963 and became the first nation to land near the South Pole of the Moon.

"Our journey has been remarkable. Our rockets carry more than payloads.

They carry the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians. India's achievements are significant scientific milestones. Beyond that, they are proof that the human spirit can defy gravity," Mr. Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that in the coming weeks, an Indian astronaut will travel to space as part of a joint Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)-NASA Mission to the International Space Station.

The Axiom-4 mission is scheduled for launch on May 29, and Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three others will undertake a 14-day sojourn to the orbital laboratory.

The GLEX 2025 is organised by the International Astronautical Federation and the ISRO.

"Space is not just a destination. It is a declaration of curiosity, courage, and collective progress. India's space journey reflects this spirit," Mr. Modi said.

He said India made history by reaching Mars on its first attempt in 2014, Chandrayaan-1 helped discover water on the Moon, Chandrayaan-2 gave the world the highest-resolution images of the Moon, and Chandrayaan-3 increased the understanding of the lunar South Pole.

"We built cryogenic engines in a record time. We launched 100 satellites in a single mission. We have launched more than 400 satellites for 34 nations on our launch vehicles.

This year, we docked two satellites in space, a major step forward," PM Modi said.

Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that Russia is “asking for too much” to end its war with Ukraine, underscoring new frustrations in the Trump White House over its efforts to court Moscow on peace talks.

Speaking to the Munich Leaders Meeting in Washington, he said that the U.S. is focusing on a long-term settlement since Russia has rejected the U.S. call for a 30-day ceasefire. Moscow has said that sort of temporary pause is not in its strategic interest because it would allow Ukraine to regroup.

But he stressed that Russia is likely to have to make concessions — a sign that the Trump administration is willing to get more aggressive with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The Russians are asking for a certain set of requirements, a certain set of concessions in order to end the conflict. We think they’re asking for too much,” Vance said.

Mysterious substance spotted swirling across the surface of the Baltic Sea — Earth from space

This striking false-color satellite image shows masses of organic material swirling along the Polish coastline.

When the photo was taken, the composition of these giant swirls was unknown, but surprising research has since revealed what they are made of.

In 2000, satellite imagery revealed the presence of previously unknown, near-invisible films of organic material, or "slicks," periodically appearing on the ocean surface in and around the Gulf of Gdańsk — a section of the Baltic Sea surrounding the city of Gdańsk on Poland's north coast.

The best example of this intriguing phenomenon occurred in May 2018, when the swirls reached more than 130 miles (210 kilometers) from the coastline, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.

The photos of this event (see above and below) have been altered to highlight the wavelengths of light coming from the mystery substance, which also makes the land surrounding Gdańsk appear red.

Scientists were initially unsure what these slicks were made of. They formed similar patterns to photosynthetic algae blooms that get swirled across the ocean surface by wind and ocean currents.

However, such blooms are normally clearly visible to the naked eye in most satellite photos, and often emerge several months earlier than when the slicks kept appearing.

Some researchers later proposed that the material could be "sea snot" — a slimy substance produced by some plankton, which can stick to boats and along the coastline.

However, locals have never reported any sea snot outbreaks in the area. But during a 2023 study into the slicks, researchers finally realized what they were made of: tree pollen.

Using data collected by NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, the study team revealed that similar slicks had appeared 14 times between 2000 and 2001.

The timing of these slicks, which often appear between May and June, closely matched the pollen cycle of pine trees (Pinus sylvestris), suggesting that the trees' pollen was being blown out to sea and settling on the ocean's surface.

A further analysis of the light reflected off the slicks confirmed this hypothesis.

Ocean pollen

Pine trees are the most common tree in Poland, making up around 60% of the country's forests, which in turn cover one-third of the nation's landmass, according to State Forests Poland.

Previous research had already shown that the pollen of these trees could end up in the Baltic Sea. But until the 2023 study, there was no indication that this was happening on such a large scale, according to the Earth Observatory.

Due to pollen's high organic carbon content, researchers believe follow-up studies are needed to fully assess the role it plays in marine ecosystems across the globe.

"If we can track pollen aggregation in different places, this may provide useful data for fisheries studies," Chuanmin Hu, an optical oceanographer at the University of South Florida who led the 2023 study, previously told the Earth Observatory.

The amount of pollen reaching the world's oceans is also likely increasing as a result of human-caused climate change:

A 2021 study in North America revealed that annual pollen levels increased by 21% between 1990 and 2018, and that the pollen season lasted for around 20 days longer on average.

This is the result of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide, which allows plants to produce more pollen — and is happening around the world.

Far-right activist Laura Loomer is going after a prominent conservative health policy expert and former Trump administration official for his proposals to overhaul Medicaid — stoking larger intraparty tensions at a pivotal moment for negotiations over President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”

In a social media post Monday, Loomer calledBrian Blase, the president of Paragon Health Institute, a “RINO Saboteur” for helping draft a letter circulated by 20 House conservatives that advocated for deep cuts to Medicaid in the GOP’s domestic policy megabill.

His role in writing the missive was first reported by POLITICO.

“In a shocking betrayal of President Donald Trump’s unwavering commitment to America’s working-class families, and his promise to protect Medicaid, [Brian Blase] … is spearheading a dangerous campaign to undermine the Republican Party’s midterm prospects,” Loomer said on X.

Fiscal hawks believe cuts to the safety net program will deliver necessary savings to finance Trump’s desired package of tax cuts and extensions, border security spending, energy policy and more. But Trump has also continued to insist there will be no provisions included in the bill that would result in cutting Medicaid benefits — though he hasn’t detailed how that might be the case.

Loomer accused Blase of “currently pressuring congressional Republicans to defy the President’s ironclad pledge to protect Medicaid— a program critical to the heartland voters who propelled Donald Trump to his election victories.”

Blase worked in Trump’s first administration as a special assistant to the president on the National Economic Council. He’s one of the most influential conservative health policy thinkers in Washington, frequently writing op-eds in the Wall Street Journal and publishing a mountain of policy papers pushing Medicaid reform.

In a statement Tuesday, Blase defended himself and his work.

“I am proud to have served President Trump for two and a half years at the White House, leading the implementation of his health care agenda,” Blase said. “Paragon shares the president’s commitment to reducing waste, fraud, and abuse in government programs and reversing the harmful health policies of the Biden administration — like California’s $10 billion scheme to put illegal immigrants on Medicaid.”

A Paragon spokesperson said last week the group sent a list of Medicaid reform principles to policymakers and that it “It appears that the excellent letter by [Texas GOP Rep.] Chip Roy and colleagues incorporated some of our ideas.”

It’s significant that Loomer would make Blase a target: She has a history of crusading against people she sees as disloyal to Trump, having in the past personally persuaded the president to fire several top national security officials over their perceived lack of sufficient fealty.

The situation also speaks to the broader friction within the Republican Party between the moderate and the populist wings — which are wary of benefit cuts — and the more traditional conservative faction — bent on making major changes to safety-net programs.

The divide has threatened to imperil the package central to Trump’s agenda as Republicans are under immense pressure to find savings for the bill.

Roy and a handful of House Republicans who are in touch with Blase are full steam ahead to force GOP leaders to pursue deeper cuts across Medicaid and other safety-net programs, which they argue need massive reforms to curb long-term spending.

Freedom Caucus members met Tuesday morning to discuss reconciliation and to try to push back on attacks that they’re gutting Medicaid, according to three Republicans with direct knowledge of the matter.

Li pointed out that today, space technology is reshaping humanity's exploration of the cosmos at an unprecedented pace.

Researchers develop new method for tracking ocean carbon from space

The ocean plays a large role in cycling carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Determining how much carbon is locked away in the ocean is critical to understanding Earth's changing climate.

However, measuring and monitoring oceanographic processes on a massive scale poses a challenge to scientists.

MBARI researchers and collaborators from Florida State University have developed a new method for analyzing satellite data to better predict the export of carbon.

The team recently published their findings in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. "We urgently need tools to monitor the ocean-carbon connection on a global scale.

By leveraging diverse sets of data, we've identified a new path forward to improve carbon export estimates from space," said Monique Messié, a senior research specialist who leads MBARI's Data Integration and Interdisciplinary Oceanography Team and was lead author on the recent study.

The ocean and its inhabitants are critical parts of Earth's carbon cycle. Carbon dioxide dissolves into the ocean, and marine life converts it into organic material that later sinks into the deep sea.

Together, these processes can lock away, or sequester, carbon from the atmosphere in the ocean's depths, a process known as carbon export.

Direct measurements of carbon export are scarce, so scientists have to rely on models and satellite data to understand large-scale patterns in the ocean-carbon connection.

Tiny plant-like phytoplankton in the ocean's surface waters convert carbon dioxide into organic carbon via photosynthesis. Scientists can use satellite ocean color data to estimate phytoplankton productivity.

However, existing satellite-based models often do not capture what happens below the ocean's surface.

Coastal upwelling in the California Current—a cool, nutrient-rich current running from British Columbia to Baja California—creates a boom of productivity.

Ocean currents can carry phytoplankton hundreds of kilometers offshore. Marine life consumes phytoplankton, transporting carbon through the food web as food and waste.

Dead phytoplankton and carbon-rich waste ultimately sink to the depths below, part of a biological pump that can lock carbon away in the deep sea for thousands of years.

MBARI's Data Integration and Interdisciplinary Oceanography Team works to understand ocean processes by leveraging diverse datasets from various disciplines, from physics to ecosystems.

The team is particularly interested in addressing which processes drive patterns of biological communities throughout the water column over time.

These relationships are especially challenging to decipher because they are not always direct.

For example, because plankton are displaced by currents, what we observe in one location may be the result of past conditions tens of kilometers away.

New federal statistics show a steep decrease in the number of times the FBI searched a vast foreign intelligence repository for information about Americans and others in the United States last year.

The number of “U.S. person queries” plunged from 57,094 in 2023 to 5,518 in 2024, according to the report published Monday by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The report details the use of a surveillance program, known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, that allows the U.S. government to collect without a warrant the communications of targeted foreigners located in other countries — including when they are in contact with Americans or other people inside the U.S.

National security officials have said the program is vital to protecting the country, but civil liberties advocates have condemned it as a violation of Americans’ privacy.

The report concludes that the decrease is due in large part to the adoption of tighter rules governing the program, including a requirement that the FBI enter a justification for a database query about an American before conducting it.

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked President Trump’s dismantling of three federal agencies that support libraries, museums, minority businesses and mediation services.

U.S. District Judge John McConnell agreed with 21 Democratic-led states that the shutdowns violate the separation of powers.

The lawsuit stems from Trump’s March 14 executive order that sought to eliminate seven federal agencies, part of his sweeping efforts to slash wide swaths of the federal bureaucracy. The order has quickly led to mass layoffs, grant freezes and other sweeping reductions at the agencies.

The Democratic-led states sued over the dismantling of three of those agencies: the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS).

In response to a separate lawsuit, another federal judge last week paused plans for layoffs at the IMLS, but McConnell’s order is the first to also block the dismantling of the other two agencies.

For the first time, scientists have observed solo atoms floating freely and interacting in space.

The discovery helps to confirm some of the most basic principles of quantum mechanics that were first predicted more than a century ago but were never directly verified.

Individual atoms are notoriously difficult to observe due to their quantum nature. Researchers cannot, for example, know both an atom's position and its velocity at the same time, due to quantum weirdness.

But using certain laser techniques, they have captured images of clouds of atoms.

"It's like seeing a cloud in the sky, but not the individual water molecules that make up the cloud," Martin Zwierlein, a physicist at MIT and co-author of the new research, said in a statement.

The new method goes one step further, allowing scientists to capture images of "free-range" atoms in free space. First, Zwierlein and his colleagues corralled a cloud of sodium atoms in a loose trap at ultracold temperatures.

Then, they shot a lattice of laser light through the cloud to temporarily freeze the atoms in place. A second, fluorescent laser then illuminated the individual atoms' positions.

The observed atoms belong to a group called bosons. These particles share the same quantum mechanical state and, as a result, behave like a wave, bunching together.

This concept was first proposed by French physicist Louis de Broglie in 1924 and has subsequently become known as a "de Broglie wave."

Sure enough, the bosons Zwierlein and his team observed displayed de Broglie wave behavior. The researchers also captured images of lithium fermions — a type of particle that repels similar particles rather than bunching together.

The results were published May 5 in the journal Physical Review Letters. Two other groups reported using a similar technique to observe pairs of bosons and fermions in the same issue of the journal.

"We are able to see single atoms in these interesting clouds of atoms and what they are doing in relation to each other, which is beautiful," Zwierlein said.

In the future, the team plans to use the new technique — called "atom-resolved microscopy" — to investigate other quantum mechanical phenomena.

For example, they may use it to try observing the "quantum Hall effect," in which electrons sync up under the influence of a strong magnetic field.

SpaceX's Starbase becomes a new Texas city after landslide election

Update for 2:45 p.m. ET on May 6: Voters decided to incorporate Starbase as a city on Saturday (May 3), by a count of 212 to six.

SpaceX could soon have its own city in South Texas.

In December, Elon Musk's company submitted a petition requesting an election to potentially incorporate its Starbase site — the manufacturing and launch hub for its new Starship megarocket — as a city.

And now the time has come: The election will be held on Saturday (May 3).

If you're expecting some late-night vote-counting drama, you'll probably be disappointed.

"The election is likely to go Musk’s way. That’s because most of the voters work for him," wrote Lauren McGaughy of The Texas Newsroom, a collaboration of public radio stations in the Lone Star State.

"The Texas Newsroom obtained a list of the 283 voters eligible to cast a ballot in the Starbase special election," McGaughy added.

"More than 3 in 5 work for SpaceX, according to an analysis of LinkedIn profiles and social media posts documenting their employment.

An additional 20 were among the dozens of people who signed a petition calling for the incorporation vote."

So at least two-thirds of the folks eligible to vote in Saturday's election "either work for SpaceX or have already indicated their support for the new City of Starbase," she wrote. "The number could be much higher."

Starship is the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built, and it's designed to be fully and rapidly reusable.

SpaceX thinks the vehicle will make Mars settlement — a long-held dream of Musk's — economically feasible at long last.

Making Starbase a city is a step along that ambitious path as well, according to the company.

"To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community," SpaceX said in the December 2024 petition, which was addressed to Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr.

"Incorporating Starbase will streamline the processes required to build the amenities necessary to make the area a world-class place to live — for hundreds already calling it home, as well as for prospective workers eager to help build humanity's future in space," the company added.

To find the planetary line-up, stargazers should look to the eastern sky below the head of the western great fish represented in the constellation Pisces a few hours before sunrise on May 8, which will occur for viewers in New York at 5:46 a.m. (0946 GMT).

All three of the tightly packed worlds will have risen above the horizon by 4:15 a.m., with Venus (magnitude -4.38) on the left, and Saturn (magnitude 1.18) on the right.

Neptune will make for a trickier viewing target, given that it is the only major planet in our solar system that is not visible to the naked eye.

The ice giant's relative dimness comes as a result of its far flung orbit, which takes it over 30 times further from our sun than the average distance between our star and Earth, according to NASA.

In order to spot Neptune, stargazers will need to get their hands on a good pair of binoculars or a telescope, which will reveal the reclusive world as a blueish point of light.

On the morning of May 8, Neptune will be particularly easy to find sitting around half way between Venus and Saturn.

The pre-dawn hour will see the planetary trio crammed into a 10 degree patch of sky (about as wide as your fist at arm's length), making them a tempting target for the astrophotography community.

Planet Mercury will also peek its head above the horizon shortly before the sun rises.

As always astronomy enthusiasts must always take care to never point binoculars or any telescopic equipment towards the rising sun, and to avoid staring in its direction with the naked eye, as doing so can lead to permanent loss of vision.

This configuration of planets will hold relatively stable from the perspective of Earth for the following two nights.

However, by May 11 it will become apparent that Neptune and Saturn are growing ever more distant from brighter Venus.

As the month wears on, Venus will remain relatively close to the eastern horizon, while its two planetary siblings drift maintain a close formation as they drift to a more south easterly position, and rise ever higher in the morning sky.

Japan's Resilience moon lander arrives in lunar orbit ahead of historic touchdown try

A private Japanese lunar lander is now in orbit around the moon.

The Resilience spacecraft, which was built by the Tokyo-based company ispace, arrived at the moon on schedule Tuesday (May 6), keeping it on target for a historic touchdown try a month from now.

"First and foremost, we are extremely pleased that the Resilience lander successfully reached lunar orbit as planned today," Takeshi Hakamada, ispace's founder and CEO, said in a statement.

"We will continue to proceed with careful operations and thorough preparations to ensure the success of the lunar landing."

Resilience launched Jan. 15 atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket along with another private moon lander — Blue Ghost, which was built and operated by Texas-based company Firefly Aerospace.

Blue Ghost took a more direct route to the moon, arriving in lunar orbit on Feb. 13 and touching down on Earth's nearest neighbor on March 2.

That was a historic moment; Blue Ghost became just the second private spacecraft to soft-land on the moon, after Intuitive Machines' Odysseus craft in February 2024.

Resilience, by contrast, took its time, taking a low-energy, fuel-conserving path that featured a close lunar flyby on Feb. 14.

If all goes according to plan, Resilience will touch down on June 5 within Mare Frigoris ("Sea of Cold"), a basaltic plain in the moon's northern hemisphere.

A successful landing would be the second for Japan, whose national space agency put a spacecraft called SLIM ("Smart Lander for Investigating Moon') down in January 2024.

Resilience is carrying five science and tech payloads. One of them is a miniature rover named Tenacious, which was built by ispace's Luxembourg-based subsidiary.

Tenacious will collect some moon dirt under a contract with NASA. And the little rover is carrying a payload of its own — "Moonhouse," a project by artist Mikael Genberg, which sits on Tenacious' front bumper.

The June 5 landing try will be the second for ispace, which aims to help open the moon for further exploration and resource exploitation.

The company's first lunar lander successfully reached orbit in March 2023 but failed during its touchdown try that April.

FAA gives environmental approval for increased Starship launch rate

The Federal Aviation Administration will allow SpaceX to perform as many as 25 Starship launches a year from its Texas site, five times the previous limit.

The FAA issued a record of decision May 6 on an environmental assessment regarding an increase in launches from SpaceX’s Starbase facility at Boca Chica, Texas.

The assessment evaluated a request by SpaceX to conduct up to 25 Starship/Super Heavy launches annually from Starbase, along with up to 25 landings each of the Super Heavy booster and Starship upper stage.

That assessment resulted in what is formally known as a mitigated finding of no significant impact (FONSI), which means the proposed increase in launches would not result in significant environmental effects requiring a more thorough environment impact statement.

“The FAA has determined that the Proposed Action is a reasonable, feasible, practicable, and prudent alternative for a federal decision in light of the established goals and objectives,” the FAA stated in the record of decision.

The approval comes with it an extensive list of conditions, some continued from prior environmental approvals and others new requirements.

They notably include conditions regarding wastewater discharges from its launch deluge system, after allegations that the company had used the system without required permits.

The FAA’s decision came after a public comment period that included two in-person public meetings in Brownsville, Texas, and one virtual public meeting in January.

The FAA stated it received 12,303 comments on the draft of the environmental assessment.

At the virtual public meeting, held Jan. 13, a majority of participants said they opposed the plan.

Many expressed opposition to the proposals in the environmental assessment for potential Starship landings in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, something SpaceX has not attempted to date and would be unlikely to do frequently as it plans ultimately to land Starship back at Starbase.

One change in the final environmental assessment is that any Starship landings in the Pacific would be outside of the 200-nautical-mile (370-kilometer) exclusive economic zone surrounding Hawaii, with an additional buffer zone around a marine national monument in the region.

The FAA stated it made the change based on public comments.

Even those who said at the virtual public meeting they support Starship launches expressed some reservations.

“We’re excited by what SpaceX does,” said David Dixon, who said he owns properties on South Padre Island, north of Starbase, but worried about the effect vibrations from the launches had on buildings.

“I know it’s doing long-term damage.”

The Starbase assessment is one of several environmental reviews regarding new or increased SpaceX launch activities at several locations.

In March, the FAA approved a request from SpaceX to increase the number of Falcon 9 launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base’s Space Launch Complex (SLC) 4 from 36 per year to 50.

The Department of the Air Force has started another environmental review to allow SpaceX to perform up to 100 Falcon launches a year from both SLC-4 and SLC-6, which SpaceX is converting to support Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches.

At Cape Canaveral, the FAA is conducting an environmental assessment for additional Falcon 9 launches from SLC-40, which includes a virtual public meeting May 8.

The FAA is performing a separate environmental review for Starship launches from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A, while the Department of the Air Force is doing its own review of potential Starship launches from Cape Canaveral’s SLC-37, previously used by the Delta 4, or a proposed new SLC-50.

Internet access on mobile devices has been limited as security is being ramped up due to Ukrainian threats

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has urged Moscow residents to be patient with security restrictions this week during Victory Day celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Earlier, Ukraine had threatened foreign dignitaries visiting the Russian capital.

Muscovites have been reporting disruptions in mobile internet access since Tuesday, with providers attributing the issues to circumstances beyond their control.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Peskov acknowledged that the government had implemented restrictions “for understandable reasons” and encouraged residents to bear with the inconvenience.

“We have to take into account the dangerous neighbor we are dealing with, so to speak,” he stated, referring to Ukraine.

Foreign leaders and envoys from 29 countries are set to attend Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, which will culminate with a traditional military parade on Red Square.

President Vladimir Putin has declared a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine for three days during the celebrations. However, Kiev has refused to reciprocate, demanding an unconditional 30-day truce instead.

Russia hit by mass flight disruptions

Moscow airports have faced severe disruptions from Ukrainian drone strikes, stranding thousands of passengers

Ukrainian drone attacks across Russia sparked widespread travel chaos late Tuesday and early Wednesday, forcing multiple Russian airlines to cancel and reroute dozens of flights. Repeated airport closures in Moscow and multiple regions threw operations into disarray and left thousands of passengers stuck on parked flights or stranded in airports without accommodation.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that air defense systems shot down at least eight drones on Tuesday evening and another nine early Wednesday morning.

The wave of attacks marked the third consecutive day of drone assaults on the capital, just days ahead of the city’s May 9 Victory Day parade.

Aviation authorities grounded flights at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports, as well as in the cities of Nizhny Novgorod, Kirov, Yaroslavl, Kazan.

Russia’s major carriers including Aeroflot, Pobeda, and S7 warned passengers to brace for disruptions on Tuesday and Wednesday. S7, pledged to provide full refunds for affected passengers or rebook them on alternative flights.

“The restrictions were imposed to ensure the safety of civil aircraft flights,” Artyom Korenyako, a spokesperson for Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, told reporters.

Residents in the Ryazan, Tula, Orel, and Moscow regions reported seeing waves of drones flying toward the Russian capital.

The closures come as Russia expects 29 foreign leaders to attend the Victory Day military parade in Moscow later this week.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will arrive for a full state visit and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are among the expected attendees, according to Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will be the only European leaders present at the parade.

The head of Kiev’s Center for Countering Disinformation Andrey Kovalenko has said on his Telegram channel that Ukraine’s overnight attacks targeted the Kubinka airbase in Moscow region, as well as the Shaykovka airfield in Kaluga region.

The attacks come despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a unilateral ceasefire from midnight May 7 to midnight May 11. Framed as a humanitarian gesture to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, the Kremlin said the three-day pause was also intended to open the door to potential “direct negotiations with Kiev without preconditions.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Wednesday that despite the latest attack, the ceasefire declared by the Russian president remains in effect.

“This is an initiative by the Russian side, by President Putin. It remains in force,” he told reporters.

Democratic leaders of two House committee are asking NASA and the Defense Department to investigate claims that SpaceX takes investment from Chinese sources as well as broader conflict-of-interest concerns.

The May 6 letter, from the ranking members of the House Armed Services Committee and its strategic forces subcommittee, as well as the ranking members of the House Science Committee and its space subcommittee, is the latest to highlight what they perceive to be conflicts of interest involving Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX who has also been a senior adviser to President Trump.

“Because SpaceX performs significant work for the federal government across the national security and civil space architectures, even the perception of a conflict of interest is very troubling, and Mr. Musk’s influence over the agencies awarding large contracts to his company goes far beyond mere perception,” the letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and acting NASA Administrator Janet Petro states.

“These convergent interests should be immediately evaluated to determine whether SpaceX has been, or could be, given special treatment due to the position that its CEO holds within the Trump Administration.”

The letter also mentions a report by ProPublica March 26 that found evidence that SpaceX took money from Chinese investors through offshore accounts, such as in the Cayman Islands.

The report raised questions about foreign influence on the company, although the report stated that the investments were structured to limit the information the Chinese investors received and that the amount invested was “well under $100 million,” a tiny fraction of the company’s estimated $350 billion valuation.

“SpaceX may be reluctant to publicly disclose the full extent of Chinese investment into the company’s privately held ownership structure.

In light of the extreme sensitivity of SpaceX’s work for DoD and NASA, this lack of transparency raises serious questions,” the members wrote.

Jared Isaacman, the nominee to be NASA administrator, was asked about the ProPublica report in a question for the record from Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) published after the hearing. Isaacman said he was not familiar with the report.

“That said, I would hope that NASA—and the broader U.S. government—have implemented the appropriate safeguards to ensure open, fair competition while also protecting against influence from geopolitical adversaries,” he wrote.

The House members requested information from both NASA and the DOD on how they assess conflicts of interest and SpaceX’s compliance with regulations about them, as well as any reviews they have performed of foreign investment in SpaceX.

The letter set a May 20 deadline for providing that information.

Series of letters

The letter is the latest in a series from Democratic members of Congress highlighting concerns they have about Musk’s role in the administration, including as the de-facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has sought access to many government agencies and worked to cancel what it considered to be wasteful contracts.

That included an April 8 letter from House Science Committee Democratic leadership to NASA, the latest in a series seeking information about DOGE’s role at NASA.

The agency told the House members that “DOGE-associated persons” were working at NASA as civil servants, serving as advisers to senior agency leadership, but provided few other details about their activities.

In that April letter, House members complained about “a lack of comprehensive and transparent responses and disclosures” by NASA about the work of DOGE there, including the names of the DOGE-associated personnel, their roles and level of access to agency information.

They said that “the agency has provided few direct and straightforward answers in response to our questions, and our request for a briefing from the DOGE team was ignored.”

The letter requested a briefing from NASA by April 22 about the role of DOGE at the agency. The committee’s Democratic caucus has not provided an update since then.

The European Commission has announced plans to eliminate the purchase of gas, nuclear fuel, and oil from Russia by the end of 2027

The European Commission’s plan to completely phase out Russian fuel imports violates the sovereignty of EU member states by depriving them of the right to choose their energy sources, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Brussels has outlined plans to end the bloc’s energy reliance on Moscow by completely eliminating imports of oil, gas, and nuclear fuel in the coming years.

Hungary obtains over 80% of its gas from Russia via pipeline, with LNG playing a supplementary role. Budapest has continued to strengthen its energy ties with Moscow despite the sanctions introduced by the EU in the wake of the Ukraine conflict.

“The forced, artificially ideological-based exclusion of natural gas, crude oil, and nuclear fuel originating from Russia will lead to severe price increases in Europe, seriously harming the sovereignty of European countries, and cause major difficulties for European companies,”Szijjarto said in a video he shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, adding that “what was announced is absolute insanity.”

“Everyone in Brussels has lost their common sense,” the foreign minister exclaimed, emphasizing thatBudapest would not allow the European Commission (EC) to violate Hungary’s sovereignty and would “uphold the right to source energy from where it reliably arrives and where it arrives at a low cost.”

Earlier in the day, the EC published a “roadmap”outlining its ambitious strategyto end reliance on Russian energy by the end of 2027. The bloc’s executive branch said it would propose legislation in June requiring all member states to draft “national plans” to terminate their imports of Russian gas, nuclear fuel, and oil.

Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico also criticized the plan, calling the proposal “economic suicide.” He added that Slovakia would push for changes in the legislative process.

Brussels announced its intention to wean EU members off Russian energy shortly after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.Supplies of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) have since replaced much of the cheaper pipeline gas previously delivered by Russia.

Although Russian pipeline gas supplies to the EU have plummeted, the bloc has been increasing its imports of LNG from the sanction-hit nation. Last year,Russia still accounted for around 19% of the EU’s total gas and LNG supply, according to the EC.

Kiev will only receive the jets once Belgium gets F-35s from the US, Brussels’ defense minister has said

Belgium will only be able to deliver F-16s to Ukraine “in the years to come,” Defense Minister Theo Francken has said, after his country initially promised to provide Kiev with jets last year. Brussels must first receive its own delivery of F-35s from the US, Francken stated.

Belgium – along with fellow NATO members Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway – pledged in 2023 to arm Kiev with up to 80 F-16s after receiving permission to do so from the administration of then-US President Joe Biden.Last year, Ukraine received about 20 of the aircraft from Denmark and the Netherlands.

Speaking at an event organized by the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington on Tuesday, Francken claimed Belgium was Kiev’s “biggest supporter on the air domain,” despite his country not yet providing Ukraine with any planes.

Brussels is “delivering 30 working F-16s [to Ukraine] in the years to come, as soon as possible,” he added.

Francken explained the delay by saying that “when we have our F-35s [from the US], we will give the F-16s because we have DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging) capacity in Belgium.”

He insisted that Belgium is “very forward leaning” towards Kiev and “will support [Vladimir] Zelensky and every Ukrainian because it is very important.”

Last month,Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said the country will send two non-operational F-16s to Ukraine to be used for spare parts by the end of 2025.

De Wever also announced that Brussels will provide €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in military support to Kiev annually. According to Francken, the package “will pass the government within a few weeks.”

Last week, the US approved a $310.5 million deal to sustain Ukrainian-operated F-16s, which includes training, spare parts, aircraft modifications, logistics assistance, and software support for the fourth-generation aircraft.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow reported in April that Russian air defenses had shot down an F-16, making it the second confirmed loss of a US-designed jet operated by Ukraine.

The Ukrainian authorities initially claimed that F-16s would be a game-changer in the conflict with Russia. However, their use in combat has been limited, with the aircraft mainly being deployed away from the contact line for air defense purposes.

The three most senior civilian and military officials from the Department of the Air Force told a congressional panel May 6 that “the strategic landscape has shifted dramatically” and that the Air Force and Space Force need the resources and creative thinking, along with modern capabilities, to meet emerging threats.

That message, along with others, was delivered to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense by Acting Secretary of the Air Force Gary Ashworth, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin, and Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman.

The joint appearance before the subcommittee is an annual rite of passage for Department leaders to spell out priorities and answer questions as the lengthy budget writing process gets started.

While there is currently no specific budget number presented for the Department or any federal agency, on May 2 the White House released a broad overview of what it wants for the new budget.

As part of that document, it said the Department of Defense needs $1 trillion. Included were a set of priorities that includes continued development of the F-47 fighter, a “down payment” on the Golden Dome missile defense system, money to ensure “space dominance,” and spending to modernize nuclear deterrence. There were no specifics, however, for each service.

As a result, members of the subcommittee could only ask general questions.

“The Department of the Air Force is at an inflection point,” Ashworth told the subcommittee in his opening statement.

“We are engaged in a fast-paced race for technological superiority against a well-resourced strategic opponent. However, we simultaneously face personnel and platform challenges affecting our immediate readiness.

We must balance our requirement to generate readiness and project power today with the imperative to rebuild our military and develop capabilities so that we can continue deterring our adversaries tomorrow.”

Allvin and Saltzman echoed Ashworth in their remarks.

“The strategic landscape has shifted dramatically,” Allvin told the subcommittee in his opening statement.

“We now operate in a world where the [People’s Republic of China] is not only rapidly modernizing its military but is doing so with a clear intent to coerce its neighbors and reshape the international order.

In parallel, we are seeing unprecedented threats to our homeland, and a PRC nuclear ‘breakout’ that demands unmatched nuclear deterrence capabilities,” he said.

Saltzman described a similar circumstance – and similar challenges – in space.

“Space gives us an incredible strategic advantage, but any advantage can become a vulnerability when held at risk,” Saltzman told the subcommittee.

“In the future, defending the homeland will demand that we first defend the satellites that make that defense possible.

To be successful in this effort we must be able to control the space, protecting our capabilities in space while denying an adversary the ability to use space against us. That, in essence, is why we have a Space Force.”

“Despite the dramatic rise in space threats and the increasing importance of space, over the last few budget cycles the Space Force has experienced shrinking resources.

This disconnect between value and investment creates risk for our nation.” Saltzman said. “It is the job of a military service to achieve superiority in its domain, and that’s what we do for space.

But if we want a Space Force that can secure our nation’s interests in, from, and to space, then we must resource it accordingly.”

Unlike previous years when specific budget proposals were offered for each service and the discussion was based on detailed questions about program costs, trade-offs and choices, the conversation this year was far more general.

For example, Ashworth was asked to name the Department’s three priorities. He named the Trump Administration’s focus – protecting the homeland and deterrence which Ashworth said for the Air Force meant continued development of the B-21 bomber, the Sentinel land-based nuclear modernization.

The third priority was what the White House is calling Golden Dome, the ambitious nationwide missile defense shield.

The study results, published in PLOS One, demonstrate that carbon measurements gathered in this way are sufficiently accurate for establishing ongoing restoration monitoring, while being much simpler and cheaper than alternative methods, such as satellites and field-based surveys.

Lead author Dr. Ben Newport, Honorary Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol's Cabot Institute for the Environment, said, "Our findings are exciting because they outline a clear and cost-effective workflow for upscaling accurate, transparent forest carbon monitoring from small field plots to tens of hectares—a scale that aligns well with community forests.

"This could potentially enable community forest groups around the world to engage with restoration funding schemes that would otherwise be beyond their technical capacities and, importantly, democratizes data collection and ownership."

The international research team, including scientists from Cardiff University and the Danau Girang Field Centre in Malaysia, used a single lightweight, consumer-grade drone to take around 600 images of a community forest restoration site in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, covering 2 hectares of selectively logged peat swamp forest.

These images were processed using a technique called Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry, which produces 3D point clouds from sets of overlapping 2D images, allowing the forest canopy height to be calculated.

From this the tree biomass was calculated using "allometric" equations and converted into the aboveground carbon currently stored within the restoration site.

The results showed that the drone-based carbon calculations were comparable in accuracy to those derived from field-based measurements.

Dr. Newport added, "Importantly, these measurements were produced using only a single drone and data collection took just one afternoon. However, care needs to be taken to select appropriate, regionally calibrated allometric equations to ensure the most accurate results."

There are tens of thousands of community-scale forest restoration projects globally and evidence suggests that these initiatives are more likely to endure than larger scale reforestation schemes.

"The drone we used can be bought for under £300 second-hand, making this a relatively accessible method for community groups who might have limited funds, especially when considering its repeatability," Dr. Newport explained.

Former President Joe Biden told the far-left BBC waiting to drop out of the 2024 presidential race until just a few months before Election Day made no difference to the outcome.

“I don’t think it would’ve mattered,” Biden answered when asked if he’d waited too long to withdraw.“We left at a time when [trails off]we had a good candidate. She was fully funded. And what happened was, I had become—what we had set out to do, no one told me to do, we’d become so successful, our agenda was hard to say ‘I wanna stop now.’”

He rambled on, “I meant what I said when I started: I’m preparing to hand this to the next generation, a transitional government, but things moved so quickly that it made it difficult to walk away to get—it was a, uh, it was a hard decision, but, uh [trails off].”

When asked about regrets, Biden said, “No, I think it was the right decision. I think that, uh, well, it was just a difficult decision.”

Biden still looks and sounds terrible, even though he’s had plenty of time to rest after leaving office.

For Biden to say his waiting to drop out made no difference is him basically saying, Nothing and no one could’ve defeated Trump. Such an admission will not make Democrats, the corporate media, and the organized left happy.

Nevertheless, even on Planet Memory Care, Biden must know how ridiculous that sounds. While I generally agree with the subtext of Biden’s answer, that after four years of a disastrous presidency, Trump would’ve been nearly impossible to beat, time is and will always be the most important asset for a presidential campaign.

Had Biden dropped out earlier, Democrats could’ve held a primary followed by a real convention that would’ve given their candidate time to find a better message than the one Biden stuck Kamala Harris with: Who wants more of the same for another four years!?

Democrats might have also nominated a candidate more appealing than Kamala, an objectively dumb woman who could not even put together a cohesive sentence —or— maybe Kamala would have had time to do the reps to learn how to speak clearly without the help of the corrupt activists at 60 Minutes.

But, hey, isn’t that the beauty of all this—Democrats torturing themselves over all these What ifs?

Never forget, though, that the same people upset over Biden’s late withdrawal are the very same people responsible for it.We all saw that the emperor had no clothes. It was Democrats, the corporate media, and activists who insisted our eyes and ears were lying.

The Air Force’s New Drone Program Is Coming to California

The “Collaborative Combat Aircraft” drone program doesn’t quite stir the imagination as other, more famous aircraft have—but it is still integral to the cutting-edge NGAD system.

The U.S. Air Force has chosen to locate its first “Aircraft Readiness Unit” for the forthcoming drone wingmen, or “Collaborative Combat Aircraft” (CCA), at Beale Air Force Base in northern California.

The CCA, which is expected to accompany the F-47 NGAD sixth-generation fighter, has begun ground testing in preparation for a first test flight, scheduled for this summer.

“Starting ground tests is a key milestone for the CCA Increment 1 program,” said General David Allvin, Air Force Chief of Staff.

“This phase bridges the gap between design and flight, reducing integration risks, boosting confidence, and laying the groundwork for a successful first flight and eventual fielding to the warfighter.”

Testing the New Drone Wingmen at Beale Air Force Base

The Aircraft Readiness Unit, stationed at Beale AFB, will “provide combat aircraft ready to deploy worldwide at a moment’s notice,” according to the Air Force. Accordingly, the CCA is expected to “fly a significant number of daily sorties to maintain readiness.”

But all that comes later. Right now, ground testing is underway, which “includes rigorous evaluations” of the CCA’s “propulsion systems, avionics, autonomy integration, and ground control interfaces.”

The testing is designed to “validate performance, inform future design decisions, and prepare the systems for flight testing later this year.”

The CCA program will join a long-line of prominent programs to be based from Beale AFB, which is somewhat isolated to the north of Sacramento. Previously, the famed SR-71 Blackbird operated from Beale.

At present—albeit not for much longer—the base is also home to the legendary U-2 Dragon Lady. Both the SR-71 and U-2 are Cold War-era reconnaissance aircraft that are designed to fly in the upper reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Moreover, both aircraft were, at their inception, ultra-sensitive and packed with novel technologies.

The CCA program doesn’t quite stir the imagination, or a sense of romanticism, in the way that the SR-71 or U-2 have.

Still, the program is integral to the NGAD system, which is at the very cutting edge of aviation technology and a harbinger of the automated/remote-operated future of aviation that surely awaits.

All About the CCA Drone Program

The CCA program currently consists of two separate airframes, the General Atomics YFQ-42A, and the Anduril YFQ-44A.

“At least one of the prototypes is expected to head into production for the program’s first tranche or “increment,” although other firms are also able to compete for the opportunity,” Breaking Defense reported.

“A separate pool of vendors is competing to develop the autonomous software that will pilot the drones, although that competition is classified.”

The Air Force hopes to field an operational CCA platform before the end of the decade, allowing advanced fighters like the F-35 and F-47 to operate with a dedicated “wingman.”

Both General Atomics and Anduril have said that their respective programs are on schedule. “We remain on schedule to test and fly YFQ-42 in the coming months,” General Atomics President Dave Alexander said.

Ukrainian drone strikes hit two Russian defense plants, grounding flights in Moscow, security service says

Long-range drones operated by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) struck two key Russian defense industry plants overnight, igniting fires and prompting mass flight disruptions in the Moscow region, sources within the SBU told the Kyiv Independent on May 7.

According to the SBU, Ukrainian drones targeted the Bazalt plant in Krasnoarmeysk, Moscow Oblast, Russia’s primary manufacturer of munitions and weaponry for all branches of its military.

Residents reported at least seven explosions followed by a large fire at the site.

Simultaneously, another strike hit the Splav plant in Tula, a city located about 180 kilometers (110 miles) south of Moscow.

Splav is reportedly the only facility in Russia responsible for designing and producing multiple-launch rocket systems and related ammunition. Footage from the scene appeared to show heavy smoke and flames engulfing part of the facility.

The strikes, according to the SBU, triggered heightened alert measures across the Moscow Oblast, forcing Russian authorities to enact “Plan Cover,” a security protocol that includes grounding civilian air traffic.

Airports across Moscow and the surrounding oblast temporarily shut down, stranding thousands of passengers and forcing airlines to cancel or reroute hundreds of flights.

ro-Kremlin sources, including the Telegram channel Mash, reported a near-total “collapse” of air operations across Moscow airports on the night of May 7.

Around 350 flights were reportedly affected, with over 60,000 passengers impacted, according to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia.

Some passengers were forced to wait on board planes for hours without food or clear information.

The disruption comes just two days before Russia’s annual Victory Day parade on May 9, a central propaganda event for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Separately, Ukrainian drone strikes on May 7 reportedly damaged the Optic Fiber Systems plant in Saransk, Republic of Mordovia, according to independent Russian outlet Astra and Ukrainian security officials.

The facility, which produces fiber for Russian military drones, suffered “serious damage,” said Andrii Kovalenko, an official with Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.

A second fire broke out nearby at the Saranskkabel plant. Local residents described hearing powerful explosions around 6 a.m. in the city’s industrial zone.

Russian authorities have banned the publication of images or video from the attack sites.

The Kyiv Independent was unable to independently verify these claims.

Russian anti-aircraft defenses have repelled a large-scale Ukrainian attack, downing two Western-supplied HIMARS rockets and over 500 drones, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday. Five long-range Neptune guided missiles and six JDAM precision-guided aerial bombs were also destroyed.

Aerial assaults have increased in the lead-up to a ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is scheduled to take effect from midnight on May 7–8 through midnight on May 10–11.

Intended as a humanitarian gesture to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, the three-day pause also opens the door to potential “direct negotiations with Kiev without preconditions,” Moscow said.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Wednesday that Russia still plans to offer the 3-day ceasefire.

By ramping up drone strikes on Russia, “the Kiev regime continues to demonstrate its essence, its inclination to terrorist actions,” Peskov said.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has declined to support the proposed ceasefire, calling it a Russian “attempt at manipulation.”

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s war crimes investigator Rodion Miroshnik, the past week saw a record number of civilian casualties from drone attacks, with 15 people killed and 142 others injured.

In a new interview with Benny Johnson, House Oversight Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) revealed what may be the most damning development yet in the fight to uncover the truth behind Jeffrey Epstein’s sinister global sex-trafficking and blackmail network: the Epstein files may have already been destroyed—and the federal government might be complicit.

Comer, who has spearheaded numerous high-profile investigations into Biden family corruption and the weaponization of federal agencies, made it clear: he believes the Department of Justice no longer has the files—if it ever did.

Comer believes the files are already destroyed to cover up the deep state.

“I don’t think the Department of Justice has [the Epstein files]—or at least the Attorney General does not have them—or she would have turned them over. The President ordered them released.

The Attorney General ordered them released. We all know they have not been released. One of my biggest fears, which I expressed with Kash Patel and a lot of people, including Stephen Miller, going into the new administration, was this: I hope they’re not shredding documents right now. This was a few weeks before the transition.

I said, “I hope they’re not shredding documents.” But you all need to go on that first day and try to get all this stuff released, because my fear—based on what I’ve dealt with in investigations and in communication with this deep state apparatus—is that they’re probably in there shredding documents as we speak. So, hopefully someone has a copy of that.

The Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, led by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), has been relentless in its pursuit of transparency, but Comer revealed that Luna is “pretty frustrated” by the stonewalling.

And I hope we find out, because our task force, led by Anna Paulina Luna—you’ve had her on your show many times—has done everything. I mean, she’s relentless, she’s persistent, and she’s pretty frustrated right now that these files haven’t been released, even though the President and the Attorney General have ordered them released.

But it’s like I told Anna, the same thing I told Patel and everybody else: you assume that somebody in the deep state said, “Okay, we’ll just put these in a file back here—this incriminating evidence on everybody—and maybe the next administration can do whatever they want to do with it.” That’s unfortunately the way it’s supposed to work, but it hasn’t worked with this deep state.

Comer’s gravest concern is the potential involvement of the federal government in Epstein’s operations.

The congressman suggested the Deep State’s actions may not be driven by loyalty to figures like the Clintons, but rather by a desire to protect their own power and avoid disruption.

Benny Johnson:

So they’re just going to let the incriminating evidence sit there smoldering, that can put them all in prison.

James Comer:

They should. That’s what they’re supposed to do. But you and I have dealt with them, Benny. You’ve covered the deep state as well as anyone. They cover their tracks, and it’s just hard for me to believe they’re going to leave incriminating evidence. If the government was involved—if the government wasn’t involved, I don’t think they would have any reason to protect Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton.

They’re never going to be elected to anything again. I don’t think they would have any reason to protect Bill Gates or anybody else. The concern I’ve always had about the Epstein file is: was the government involved? Did the government know? Was the government using Epstein and the videos to blackmail the most influential people around the world?

If that’s the case, then they knew there were victims of sex crimes there—and they did nothing. That’s the concern I have. If the government covers this up, I don’t believe it’s because of any love affair or affection for the Clinton family, just like I never believed they were hiding and covering for the Bidens because they loved Joe Biden. It was because they hated Donald Trump.

They didn’t want their agencies to be disrupted.The same thing with the Epstein files. I don’t know this, but my concern is that the government may have known a lot more and may have been an active participant—maybe with the intentions of intelligence gathering.

Who knows? But at the end of the day, I don’t think the American people would be okay if the government knew that crimes against young women were occurring, and yet they did nothing to intervene.

U.S. officials have begun interviewing applicants, with more than 30 approvals reportedly granted as of late April 2025, according to Reuters.

According to The Lever, the memo, signed by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy and ORR Assistant Secretary Andrew Gradison, outlines a coordinated effort to expedite the resettlement of this vulnerable population using funds from the federal “Preferred Communities” program—traditionally reserved for those at highest risk, including the elderly and sick.

The outlet also reported that the first group of Afrikaners is expected to arrive in the U.S. within the coming days.

It is recalled that Pakistan shot down five Indian fighter jets and a drone after the neighbouring country launched a midnight attack at six different locations, leaving 26 civilians dead and injuring 46.

Meanwhile, Lt Gen Ahmad Sharif confirmed on Wednesday that 26 innocent Pakistani civilians were martyred and 46 sustained injuries after attacks by India.

The military spokesperson said Bilal mosque near Muzaffarabad was targeted by Indian aggression, resulting in three martyrs.

Another mosque in Muridke was also attacked, where three men were martyred and one injured. In Kotli, a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy were martyred.

However, no casualties have been reported from Sialkot and Shakargarh.

Moreover, 13 people were martyred in a cowardly attack in Ahmadpur Sharqia. The armed forces immediately retaliated, delivering a strong and timely response to the enemy.

Lesbian judge blocks school board from removing sexually explicit books, saying it’s unconstitutional to follow ‘conservative values’

A school board in Colorado cannot remove sexually explicit, profane, and “transgender” books from school libraries because the school board is conservative, according to a federal judge touted as the first openly lesbian judge west of the Mississippi.

The ACLU’s Colorado chapter filed a suit on behalf of two minors, the NAACP Wyoming State Area Conference, and the Authors Guild, claiming that the school district engaged in viewpoint discrimination when removing the books. The judge granted a preliminary injunction in March, forcing the Elizabeth School District (in Elizabeth, a suburb southeast of Denver) to restore the books.

Judge Charlotte Sweeney second-guessed the school district’s objections to the books’ contents, calling the objections “pretexual” and condemning the removals as partisan because school board members had discussed following their conservative convictions when debating the removal of the books.

“Other than pretextual declarations, at this stage, there simply is no reason to believe that the books were removed because of vulgarity, age-inappropriateness, or for legitimate pedagogical [teaching] concerns; the board’s own emails strongly suggest that the book removal was motivated by the directors’ ‘commitment to conservative values,’” Sweeney wrote. “The court questions what could be more partisan or political than removing books to further the board’s self-described conservative values.”

Julian Ellis, the school district’s attorney, told The Daily Signal that the district had asked Sweeney to hold an evidentiary hearing so she could review the books herself, yet the judge refused. The board had included segments from the books in its filings, aiming to demonstrate the vulgar and inappropriate material, but the judge dismissed those.

Instead, the judge ruled that “the district’s decisive factor in voting to permanently banish the removed books was because the district disagreed with the views expressed in the books and to further their preferred political orthodoxy.”

“The court viewed any decision motivated by ‘conservative values’ as unacceptable and partisan,” Ellis explained. “The problem with the district court’s analysis is those ‘conservative values’ could be assigned to any book removal decision—a book that’s never been checked out, a book with ice cream stains on the cover, or a book that denies the Holocaust” (emphasis original).

“This also begs a question: How could a ‘conservative’ school board ever remove problematic content without the board members’ conservatism disqualifying the decision?” Ellis asked. He condemned the ruling as “unequal treatment because of one’s conservative values.”

Dan Snowberger, the board’s chairman, told The Daily Signal that Sweeney abused her authority.

“The fact that she is failing to acknowledge that the plaintiffs have mischaracterized the content of the books in question—despite our filings, including segments of the books, and refuses to even hold a hearing to allow the parties to present facts—is rather interesting and doesn’t seem impartial,” he said.

Left-leaning activist groups cheered Sweeney’s confirmation to the federal bench in 2022, celebrating her as “the first LGBT woman to serve as a federal district judge west of the Mississippi.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Wednesday that the FBI is reviewing "ens of thousands of videos of [Jeffrey] Epstein with children or child porn," and that there are "hundreds of victims," as she addressed a question about the delay in releasing the full case files.

"No one victim will ever get released. It's just the volume and that's what they're going through right now. The FBI is diligently going through that," Bondi told reporters outside the White House, saying that the sheer volume of evidence is the reason more files have yet to be released.

Bondi's comments come after a very lame 'Epstein Files' release in February, in which the DOJ handed out "phase 1" binders to a group of influencers that did not contain any new information.

Epstein, the disgraced pedophile financier who was found dead in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, is known to have had extensive recording devices throughout his various properties.

200 Alleged Predators Arrested

During the same presser, FBI Director Kash Patel announced that over 200 alleged child sex predators were arrested as part of Operation Restore Justice.

The arrests saw 115 children rescued across the US as part of the "historic" and "unprecedented" joint DOJ / FBI operation, Bondi and Patel said.

If you are online targeting a child, you will not escape us. The FBI and the Department of Justice will come after you. And we will prosecute you."

Move over Karmelo Anthony, there’s a new accused killer darling on the scene. Rodney Hinton, Jr. ran down a retired deputy, and the left loves him.

Rodney Hinton, Jr., a black man from Ohio, reportedly ran down a retired white police officer who was directing traffic for a college graduation—and Hinton has garnered generous support, both from the black community and the left. The officer allegedly murdered by Hinton was a man named Larry Henderson, a public servant who dedicated more than three decades of his life to his community, serving across a number of different law enforcement agencies.

Prosecutors allege a “calculated and premeditated” motive: just prior to Hinton running Henderson down, Hinton had watched bodycam footage from an officer-involved shooting in which Hinton’s own son, 18-year-old Ryan, was killed. Ryan had been caught up in a foot-pursuit police chase after officers were investigating reports of a stolen vehicle (the one in which Ryan, and three others, were sitting) and when the group was approached by law enforcement, Ryan ran and hid. When officers closed in, Ryan jumped out, brandishing a gun, and was, understandably, shot.

Of course it’s horribly tragic—no one wishes this is how this young man’s life ended—but as Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said of the incident, “We do not expect the officers to wait until they’re fired upon” before neutralizing threats, and rightfully so. At least, until progressives can have their way, and completely hamstring our law enforcement like they’ve done with our military. (Let’s not forget Barack Obama’s ridiculous, and frankly criminal, changes to the rules of engagement which were masterfully manipulated by the enemy; this is the end goal for our cops too.)

The black community is disproportionately dysfunctional, but I can say without hesitation I desperately want them to get it together, for everyone’s sake. And of course, Hinton is a major part of the problem. If your son is a gang-banging thug at 18, that certainly speaks to how poorly you parented as a father.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) on Wednesday proposed legislation to eliminate the intelligence community’s surveillance tools that “erode” Americans’ civil liberties.

“For over two decades, rogue actors within our U.S. intelligence agencies have used the PATRIOT Act to create the most sophisticated, unaccountable surveillance apparatus in the Western world,” Luna said in a written statement to Breitbart News.

Luna introduced the American Privacy Restoration Act, a bill that would repeal the USA PATRIOT Act, a sweeping September 11th, 2001 terrorist bill that drastically expanded government surveillance.

Elizabeth Goitein, Senior Director for the Liberty & National Security program at the Brennan Center for Justice, described how the post-9/11 law dramatically increased warrantless surveillance of Americans’ communications:

In a variety of contexts, it became lawful for the government to collect an American’s sensitive information based merely on a claim that the information was “relevant” to a legitimate purpose, regardless of whether the person was reasonably suspected of wrongdoing. Even for the most sensitive of information, communications content, Congress gave the NSA free rein to collect phone calls, texts, and emails between foreign targets and Americans — communications that previously could not be obtained domestically without a court order based on probable cause.

Ironically, according to Goitein, the increased mass surveillance has not yielded safety benefits:

Also unsurprisingly, there is zero evidence that suspicionless surveillance has made us safer. Consider the NSA’s program of “bulk collection” — the poster child for suspicionless surveillance — in which the agency obtained Americans’ phone records en masse. Two independent reviews found that this program yielded little-to-no counterterrorism benefit. Indeed, there is evidence that overcollection is counterproductive. Multiple government reviews of domestic terrorist incidents have found that agents missed signs of trouble because those signs were lost in the noise of irrelevant data. [Emphasis added]

“Achieving this goal will require restoring limitations that were stripped out of the law after 9/11, as well as enacting new ones to ensure that Americans’ sensitive information is protected from disclosure regardless of who holds the information or the technology used to capture it,” Goitein wrote about the need to restore pre-9/11 protections for civil liberties.

Luna introduced her legislation as the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing in April on warrantless government surveillance.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) said, “We need to make sure we win this time. During 2024 debate to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), privacy-oriented lawmakers nearly passed an amendment to legislation that would have required a warrant for searches of Americans’ communications.”

As Congress inches towards reauthorizing surveillance laws next year, Luna looks to rein in governments’ ability to conduct warrantless searches that trample Americans’ constitutional protections.

“My legislation will strip the deep state of these tools and protect every American’s fourth amendment right against unreasonable searches and seizures. It’s past time to reign in our intelligence agencies and restore the right to privacy. Anyone trying to convince you otherwise is using ‘security’ as an excuse to erode your freedom,” Luna concluded in her statement.

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Today, our Nation proudly commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Allied Powers’ triumph over national socialism and fascism, and the end of World War II in Europe — one of the most epic victories for forces of freedom in the history of the world. On this Victory Day for World War II, we celebrate the unmatched might, strength, and power of the American Armed Forces, and we commit to protecting our sacred birthright of liberty against all threats, foreign and domestic.

In the wake of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States righteously entered the fray of what would become the apex of the eternal battle between good and evil. After nearly 4 years of the darkest and bloodiest chapters ever recorded in human history, more than 250,000 Americans lost their lives in the fight against the Nazi regime. Today and every day, we pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Nation, their liberty, and the survival of Western civilization. Without the sacrifice of our American soldiers, this war would not have been won, and our world today would look drastically different.

May 8, 1945 marks the Allies’ acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender — the beginning of the end of years of long, gruesome, and brutal warfare. The millions of souls senselessly lost serve as a reminder of why we must pursue peace through strength. I remain steadfastly devoted to stopping the years of endless foreign wars and preventing the further loss of lives. As I stated during my Inaugural Address, we will measure our success not only by the battles we win but also by the wars we end — and my proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker.

As we commemorate Victory Day for World War II, we offer our unending thanks to every patriot from the Greatest Generation who left behind his home and family to fight for our freedom in distant lands. We honor the memories of all those who perished. Above all, we renew our commitment to keeping America and the entire world safe, secure, prosperous, and free.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 8, 2025, as a day in celebration of Victory Day for World War II.

Illegal Cockfighting Operation in Southern Mississippi Busted by ICE

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, jointly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other law enforcement partners, executed search warrants in Southern Mississippi that resulted in multiple arrests involving illegal immigration, cockfighting, and other criminal activity. The search warrants were part of an ongoing undercover investigation into the unlawful cockfighting in Harrison County, Mississippi.

The arrests included United States citizens and suspected illegal aliens found at the site of the makeshift animal fights attended by some people from outside Mississippi. Two defendants, Alvin Smith III and Herbert Kasey Smith, were charged with violating the Animal Welfare Act for hosting the cockfights bi-weekly on their property at 16478 Northup Cuevas Road, according to court documents.

’90s WWE wrestler arrested for trying to buy child pornography: District Attorney General

Michael Droese, better known to wrestling fans as Duke “The Dumpster” Droese, was indicted by a Warren County Grand Jury in May, according to a release from District Attorney General Chris Stanford, 31st Judicial District.

It was alleged that Droese used a Coinbase account in an attempt to purchase child pornography on the dark web, the release reads. Coinbase, however, recognized what the transaction was and declined the payment. The company then sent a tip to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to Stanford, the FBI alerted the Warren County Sheriff’s Department of Droese and the tip they were given March 29. Within days, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began investigating, which quickly led to Stanford charging Droese.

Stanford continued by explaining the charges as attempted, since Droese’s transaction was never processed.

At the time, Droese was employed as the DUI Coordinator for the 31st Judicial District Adult Recovery Court Program, the release states. Droese served the program for several years in various capacities. Upon learning of the indictment, Droese was terminated from his position effective immediately. Stanford noted that Dorese, though working through the public court system, was never given duties that mandated any contact with children.

After the indictment, Droese peacefully surrendered himself to law enforcement, according to Stanford. Droese was booked on his charges and released after posting a $10,000 bond.

Droese’s next court date is set for May 28.

He wrestled as Duke “The Dumpster” Droese in WWE (then WWF) from 1994 to 1996. He would then return in 2001 for one night only in a special attraction battle royale at WrestleMania 17.
