While Alaska officials scramble to court Japanese investors for their USD$44-billion LNG project, Alberta has already sealed a major energy agreement with Japan — exposing a stark contrast in North American energy diplomacy.

That’s because US president Donald Trump is using the threat of tariffs as a big stick to bludgeon Asian ‘allies’ to buying American gas.

But Alberta Premier Danielle Smith beat him to the punch at the CERAWeek by S&P Global energy conference in Houston last week — using charm and a strong business case for Alberta gas as her secret weapon.

Smith and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) CEO Ichiro Takahara signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the conference, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to Alberta’s oil, natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia industries.

Canada’s proposed retaliatory tariffs against the United States could deliver a harsh blow to the nation’s grain producers by driving up the cost of an essential crop nutrient, according to the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC).

GGC Executive Director Kyle Larkin said his organization has closely examined the federal government’s list of potential US counter tariff targets.

Fertilizer sits at the top of that list, especially phosphate fertilizer, which has no domestic production in Canada.

“There is no domestic phosphate production here, so we rely on imports, and the United States is our major supplier,” said Larkin.

An executive order from the White House listed the U.S. Agency for Global Media as one of seven government agencies “that the President has determined are unnecessary.”

The non-statutory components of the U.S. Agency for Global media will therefore be “eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law.”

The entities will also “reduce the performance of their statutory functions and associated personnel to the minimum presence and function required by law.”

A senior White House official told Fox News that “Voice of America has been out of step with America for years.”

“It serves as the Voice for Radical America and has pushed divisive propaganda for years now,” the official added.

The Virginia-class USS Minnesota has been scouting out new territory during training exercise while based at WA’s naval base off the coast of Perth, where four Virginia Class submarines will be stationed from 2027 under the AUKUS trilateral defence pact.

By the middle of the year, up to 80 U.S. navy personnel will be stationed at the multi-billion-dollar HMAS Stirling base—they'll be the first of hundreds who will eventually arrive on—or off—Australia’s shores.

Under AUKUS, Australia will be armed with nuclear-powered submarines—amid a swathe of other defence collaborations with the UK and United States—a move aimed at creating a counterweight against Beijing’s aggression in the region.

Peter Dean, the director of Foreign Policy at the U.S. Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, said the latest move was vital to the partnership.

“Defending the Indian Ocean against rising Chinese capabilities and power is important,” he told Reuters.

A group "fed up" with the British Columbia Teachers Federation have called on the labour union to take accountability and ensure everyday educators are better represented in discussions.

The move comes as top brass convene in a Vancouver hotel for the BCTF's annual general meeting.

"BC teachers pay some of the highest union dues in the country," Julie, a Fraser Valley-based educator, told the Western Standard. "The average teacher is paying around $2,000 per year in union dues to the BCTF while facing by far the highest cost of living."

She suggested the BCTF was "barely doing anything to get us a better contract," and accused the union of refusing to hire professional negotiators to assist the teachers in the ongoing bargaining process.

"Teachers are angry," Julie continued. "We earn an average salary of $75,000-$80,000 and can't keep up with our bills, especially with our egregiously high union dues every month."

She lamented that some of the teachers she knows were "skipping meals and missing mortgage payments" while executives go on trips around the world.

"Enough is enough," Julie declared. "We want more accountability and representation at the BCTF and won't stop until we get it."

She noted that a number of teachers had gotten together to form the Recess Rescue Me political action group, but that they "have to be careful because the BCTF is extremely vengeful and will go after our licences in a heartbeat." Continue...

People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier said Canada cannot “win” in a trade war with the United States and urged Canadian officials to try to renegotiate a deal rather than enact “silly retaliatory tariffs.”

“Is it that difficult to understand? WE’RE NOT GOING TO WIN A TRADE WAR WITH THE US!” Bernier wrote on X last week.

“We’re hurting our own economy ten times more than theirs with these silly retaliatory tariffs and giving Trump just another pretext to escalate the dispute.”

U.S. President Donald Trump has routinely cited Canada’s lack of action on drug trafficking and border security as the main reasons for his punishing tariffs.

A little over a week ago, Trump announced he was giving Mexico and Canada a 30-day reprieve on 25 percent export tariffs for goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on free trade.

However, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, despite the reprieve from Trump, later threatened to impose a 25 percent electricity surcharge on three American states. Ford quickly stopped his planned electricity surcharge after Trump threatened a sharp increase on Canadian steel and aluminum in response to his threats.

Bernier said that Canadian officials need to stop “all forms of retaliation” and instead take Trump at his “word and tell him we accept his idea of having reciprocal tariffs, and that the best situation for both countries is therefore to lower all tariffs.”

“We should tell him that we’re willing to put dairy supply management on the table and get rid of the sky-high tariffs that protect this unfair system. We should tell him that we are open to lower or eliminate any other tariffs in the context of reciprocity,” he noted.

Bernier also said it is important for Canada as well as the U.S. to sit down and reopen the North American Free Trade Agreement and “have a wide-ranging discussion over all these issues.”

The Carney Liberals are taking steps to address so-called "lost Canadians," a term used for individuals born outside Canada to Canadian parents who were also born abroad.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced an interim citizenship program to help those affected, while a judge has questioned the lack of details on how the program will work, according to the Globe and Mail.

In 2009, the Conservative government changed citizenship laws to prevent Canadians born abroad from passing their citizenship to their children unless the child was born in Canada. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled in late 2023 that this law was unconstitutional, and the government agreed with the decision.

Since then, the federal government has received three deadline extensions to pass new legislation. Now, with the current deadline set to expire on March 19, Miller’s department is seeking a 12-month extension. While waiting for legislation, Miller announced that affected individuals born or adopted before December 19, 2023 will be eligible for discretionary citizenship grants. Those born or adopted after that date may also qualify if they have a Canadian citizen parent who has lived in Canada for at least three cumulative years.

This three-year requirement was part of previous legislation aimed at resolving the issue, but the bill died when Parliament was prorogued in January.

On March 13, Ontario Superior Court Justice Jasmine Akbarali extended the deadline temporarily, until April 25, but criticized the government for not providing enough details on how it would implement interim measures.

“There is no evidence of what policy will be adopted to implement its intention,” Akbarali stated in her decision. “There is no evidence about how any such policy will be communicated to people affected by the unconstitutional legislation.”

She added that more information is needed before granting a further extension.

Sujit Choudhry, a lawyer representing those who challenged the law, argued in court that the government should only receive a four-month extension rather than the requested 12 months. He suggested the longer request was due to the likelihood of an upcoming federal election. Choudhry pointed out that courts have granted four-month extensions in the past to allow governments to pass court-mandated legislation during election periods.

The federal government, in its court submission, warned that failing to pass new legislation before the deadline could result in some individuals automatically gaining citizenship while others remain excluded.

The court heard arguments on the matter Thursday morning, and a decision is expected soon.

And if a Tuesday public meeting is any indication, it’s about to turn into an all-out war against what residents see as ‘woke renewable energy’ in general and the UCP government’s electricity policies and the mandate — or lack thereof — of the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to enforce them.

About 150 people turned out for a public meeting in the local community centre to discuss strategies to fight conditional development approval that had been granted by the AUC late on Friday, February 28.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on party leaders to put an end to a second taxpayer-funded pension for prime ministers, arguing it’s an unnecessary burden on Canadians.

“Taxpayers can’t afford to keep covering Ottawa’s perks, and scrapping the prime minister’s second pension would be a good place to start saving money,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF.

“Prime ministers already earn nearly six times more than the average Canadian and receive a generous MP pension — there’s no reason for taxpayers to foot the bill for a second one.”

According to CTF estimates, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will receive a total of $8.4 million in retirement through two government pensions. His MP pension alone will start at $141,000 per year when he turns 55, amounting to roughly $6.5 million if he lives to 90.

In addition, Trudeau will collect a second pension specifically for serving as prime minister.

The government states that any prime minister who holds office for at least four years qualifies for this additional retirement allowance.

Trudeau’s payments will begin at $73,000 per year at age 67, totaling around $1.9 million by age 90.

With both pensions combined, Trudeau’s estimated lifetime payout reaches $8.4 million. His current annual salary is $406,200.

Reforms introduced in 2012 reduced pension benefits, raised the retirement age, and increased MPs’ contributions to their own pensions. Before these changes, MPs contributed just $1 for every $24 spent by taxpayers and federal funds.

Former prime minister Stephen Harper forfeited between $1 million and $2 million in potential pension payouts by implementing these reforms. Despite that, the CTF estimates Harper’s total lifetime pension will still amount to approximately $7 million.

“Prime ministers already collect millions through their first pension. They shouldn’t be billing taxpayers for a second one,” said Terrazzano. “Canadians need to see leadership at the top, and all party leaders should commit to ending this extra pension for future prime ministers.”

A federal jury, after a three-day trial presided over by District Judge Thomas O. Rice, on Wednesday found Indian national Jaskaran Singh, 31, guilty on possession with intent to distribute charges.

Singh faces a maximum prison sentence of twenty years and potential deportation. Sentencing will be set on June 25.

“Mr. Singh trafficked more than 170 pounds of illegal drugs across our northern border into the United States,” stated Acting United States Attorney Richard Barker.

The seizure was an historic one for the Eastern Washington region, worth more than $7.8 million, he said.

A Calgary man has been arrested after border officers seized 108 kg of cocaine from a commercial transport vehicle at the Coutts port of entry in southern Alberta.

On March 8, 2025, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered the drugs hidden inside a vehicle during a secondary inspection.

The drugs could be worth as much as $5.5 million.

The shipment originated in the United States. Following the seizure, the Integrated Border Enforcement Team — comprised of the RCMP, CBSA, and Calgary Police Service — launched a criminal investigation.

Arshdeep Singh, 26, of Calgary, was arrested and charged with importing a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Lethbridge on May 7.

Officials emphasized the importance of cooperation in preventing illegal drugs from entering Canada.

“This significant seizure demonstrates the important work being done by our border services officers,” said Ben Tame, a CBSA district director.

RCMP Supt. Sean Boser credited agency collaboration for intercepting the cocaine before it could reach Alberta communities.

Footage circulating on social media reportedly shows a man in Toronto keying a neighbor’s Tesla before walking into his apartment.

Keying a car involves deliberately scratching its paint with a key or sharp object, normally as an act of vandalism.

Little does the man realize that the entire incident has been caught by the vehicle’s camera.

According to Tesla’s website, this feature is known as “Sentry Mode,” which is part of the company’s high-level security offerings.

”When enabled, your vehicle’s cameras and sensors (if equipped) remain powered on and ready to record suspicious activity around your vehicle when Model 3 is locked and in Park,” the website states.

”Think of Sentry Mode as an intelligent vehicle security system that alerts you when it detects possible threats nearby.”

Unfortunately because the man is in Canada, he is unlikely to face the same severity of prosecution that he would in the United States.

Under Canadian law, keying a car is a criminal offense under the Criminal Code, typically charged as Mischief (Section 430).

Penalties range from a summary conviction, up to two years less a day in jail and/or fines, to an indictable offense carrying up to ten years imprisonment for significant damage.

The far-left government running the Province of Manitoba has introduced a bill that could see one’s refusal to acknowledge a person’s request to be referred to by non-biological “preferred pronouns” considered a violation of the law.

Bill 43, known as the Human Rights Code Amendment Act, was introduced by the ruling New Democratic Party’s Justice Minister Matt Wiebe on Tuesday.

The new law, if passed, adds “gender expression” as a protected category under the province’s Human Rights Code.

According to Wiebe, the law would “cover anything from behavior or appearance, such as dress, hair, make-up, body language and voice.”

Wiebe also said the law would extend to kids, effectively mandating that their “preferred pronouns” be protected under the law. This would mean that it would be considered discriminatory under the law to refer to a boy as “he” if he were to desire to be called “she.”

While Manitoba opted to vote in the far-left NDP in its last election, nearby provinces such as Alberta and Saskatchewan have put in place laws that explicitly deal with gender ideology-based pronoun use, requiring schools to inform parents if a child makes such a request.

The EC claimed that if Russia were to achieve its objectives in Ukraine, it would expand its ambitions to take more European territory by the year 2030.

This new white paper is an apparent response to statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump that the U.S. may no longer unconditionally serve as a guarantor of peace in Europe.

“The security architecture on which we have relied can no longer be taken for granted,” von der Leyen said during the presentation of the white paper. The EU would now have to invest in its own defense and military capabilities, she noted.

The White Paper also warns that dependencies on U.S. military capabilities have been too high in Europe.

To finance these militarization plans, the EC issued proposals two weeks earlier that include EU loans amounting to 150 billion euros and allowances to take on more debt than usually allowed by EU rules. Part of these funds are meant to directly support Ukraine in the ongoing war with Russia.

Recently, the French government announced it is working on a “survival manual” for every household to prepare citizens for catastrophic events, including war. The booklet includes information on how to join the military reserves. French President Emmanuel Macron announced earlier this month that he wants “a major overhaul” of France’s military, including bolstering the number of operational reservists from 40,000 to 100,000 by 2035.

Sweden and Finland have issued similar instructions to their citizens, as European politicians keep stoking the fear of war with Russia.

Democracy Watch has written Ontario’s Attorney General Doug Downey calling on him to have an independently appointed special prosecutor review the evidence and DWatch’s application in the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa for approval from the court to proceed with a private prosecution of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for pressuring, and directing others to pressure, then-Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould to stop the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin in 2018.

Alberta, Canada’s most energy-rich region, is seeing the fastest rise in energy poverty, according to a new report from the Fraser Institute.

The study reveals that between 2019 and 2021, the share of Albertans experiencing energy poverty — defined as spending more than 10% of household income on energy costs — jumped by over 80%.

That's despite Alberta’s abundant oil and gas resources.

In fact, one in five households are experiencing some form of energy poverty across the country, according to authors Elmira Aliakbari and Kevin Chan.

The report found that 20.7% of households earning between $31,200 and $55,000 experience energy poverty. Among households earning less than $31,200, the rate rises to 22.1%.

While Alberta’s increase is the most striking, Atlantic Canada continues to have the highest overall rate of energy poverty, with 24.6% of households affected. Saskatchewan also has a relatively high rate at 13.9%, while British Columbia has the lowest at 8.1%.

One factor contributing to the variation across provinces is energy pricing. British Columbia and Quebec, which benefit from abundant hydroelectric power, have among the lowest electricity costs in North America. Continue...

One of Canada’s prominent agricultural advocacy groups warned that should the federal Liberal government impose counter-tariffs on the United States, it could make growing food more expensive and would be a nightmare for Canadian farmers and consumers.

According to Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) executive director Kyle Larkin, the cost of phosphate fertilizer, which Canada does not make, would shoot up should the Mark Carney Liberal government enact counter-tariffs to U.S. President Donald Trump’s.

Larkin said recently that there is no “domestic phosphate production here (in Canada), so we rely on imports, and the United States is our major supplier.”

“A 25% tariff on phosphate fertilizer definitely would have an impact on grain farmers,” he added.

According to Statistics Canada, from 2018 to 2023, Canada imported about 4.12 million tonnes of fertilizer from the United States. This amount included 1.46 million tonnes of monoammonium phosphates (MAP) as well as 92,027 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP).

Also imported were 937,000 tonnes of urea, 310,158 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, and 518,232 tonnes of needed fertilizers that have both nitrogen and phosphorus.

According to Larkin, although most farmers have purchased their fertilizer for 2025, they would be in for a rough 2026 should the 25 percent tariffs on Canadian exports by the U.S. still stand.

Larkin noted how Canadian farmers are already facing “sky-high input costs and increased government regulations and taxation.”

He said the potential “tariff on fertilizer is a massive concern.”

“If Ottawa goes ahead, we’re calling on them to compensate producers,” he said, adding that any funds raised through tariffs on “essential products like fertilizer should go back to the producer.” Continue...

Germany has seized an oil tanker of the Russian shadow fleet that was found adrift in the Baltic Sea in January, German magazine Spiegel reported on Friday, quoting security sources.

The tanker, Eventin, was traveling under the flag of Panama when German authorities said in January that the vessel, belonging to the Russian shadow fleet, was stuck in German waters in the Baltic Sea.

The tanker had lost power and steering and was found adrift in the sea, north of the German island of Rügen.

Germany secured the vessel and blamed Russia for the use of a shadow fleet of tankers.

“Russia is endangering our European security not only with its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, but also with severed cables, displaced border buoys, disinformation campaigns, GPS jammers and, as we have seen, dilapidated oil tankers,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said at the time.

European nations supporting Ukraine in the conflict with Russia are shifting away from the idea of deploying troops to the country, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

The claim is based on public statements from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who this week hosted military planners from 31 countries, as well as insider accounts of the discussions on how European nations could approach the end of hostilities.

“The Council deliberated on the use of the word ‘Nazi,’” it stated, noting that the term should be applied carefully.

“Some thinkers have argued the term ‘Nazi’ should only be reserved for those responsible for the Holocaust,” the Council wrote. “Others have warned against making casual comparisons particularly without a well-considered awareness of history.”

The ruling stemmed from a complaint regarding an October 5 Toronto Sun column that claimed local anti-Israel protestors “hold the same views” as Nazis.

“The News Media Council determined in this case, suggesting the group of protestors ‘hold the same views’ as Nazis is overly broad and not supported by clear evidence,” the panel wrote.

“For this reason, the Council upheld this portion of the complaint.”

The complaint was filed by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, an anti-Israel advocacy group. Nova Scotia has become the latest province to scrap electrical vehicle rebates for Teslas due to the CEO’s association with the U.S. administration and its trade war on Canada.

The Progressive Conservative government joined with the NDP and Liberal opposition parties in a vote dropping the electric automaker from the rebate program, which provides subsidies that range from $2,000 to $3,000 per purchase.

The vote came after Susan Leblanc, an NDP member of the legislature, called for an amendment dropping the Elon Musk-led company’s products from the subsidy program.

LeBlanc told the legislature that the owner of Tesla has aligned himself with U.S. president Donald Trump in “waging economic war on our country and this is a small way to take a stand against that.”

Earlier this week, Manitoba’s NDP government dropped Tesla and Chinese-made electric vehicles from its EV rebate program, while BC Hydro has also said it is banning new Tesla products from its electric vehicle rebate program.

Tesla’s communications division didn’t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

India’s dependence on crude oil imports is on track to set a record high in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, as Indian fuel demand continues to grow while domestic crude production remains flat.

India imported 88.2% of the crude it consumed in the April 2024-February 2025 period, according to oil ministry data reported by The Indian Express.

The import dependence has increased from 87.7% in the same period of the 2023/2024 fiscal year, the data showed.

The Indian import dependence in the full 2023/2024 fiscal year averaged 87.8%. As import and demand trends have shown in recent months, the 2024/2025 fiscal year will see an even higher – an all-time high – reliance on crude oil imports.

India last year surpassed China as the world’s largest oil demand driver, amid growing demand for fuel transportation in India and slowing gasoline and diesel demand in China due to the advance of electric vehicles and LNG-fueled trucks in the world’s top crude oil importer.

In the near term, Indian refiners are on the lookout for funding to build new refineries as they seek to expand their refining capacity to meet growing domestic demand for fuels amid higher-than-average economic growth and rising middle-class numbers.

India, however, remains vulnerable to oil price shocks as its need for imported crude continues to grow.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says two men have been charged after officers in Ontario seized more than $11 million worth of cocaine being shipped into the country.

The seizure is said to be part of Operation Blizzard, a joint mission between the CBSA and RCMP to stop drugs from crossing the U.S. border. It’s part of Ottawa’s response to U.S. President Donald Trump, who said Canada needed to do more to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States. It was one of the reasons Trump said he would impose tariffs on Canada.

CBSA said the seizures were made at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry in Ontario.

The drugs are said to have an estimated street value of $11 million, CBSA said in a March 19 news release.
