In a twist of trade irony, Canada has accused the United States of dumping subsidized renewable diesel into its domestic market — even though Canada is, by far, the largest exporter of conventional crude oil to its southern neighbour.

The drama began in March when Tidewater Renewables Ltd., a British Columbia-based company, filed a complaint with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), claiming that low-cost, US-subsidized renewable diesel was flooding the Canadian market and causing serious financial harm.

The CBSA launched an investigation into the alleged dumping under former president Joe Biden’s so-called ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ with the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) following up with a preliminary inquiry.

But on Monday, the CITT brought the case to a halt.

After reviewing the evidence, the tribunal concluded there was “no reasonable indication that the imported renewable diesel had caused, or threatened to cause, injury to Canadian producers.” As a result, both the tribunal and CBSA will terminate their investigations and the case will not proceed to a full inquiry. Regina’s city council voted 7 to 3 to reject a proposal to postpone the addition of fluoride to the city’s water supply in 2026.

The decision to add fluoride to Regina’s water was approved in 2021. However, implementation was delayed until upgrades were completed on the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant. That project is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year with the introduction of fluoride set for January 2026.

City Coun. Clark Bezo introduced a motion on March 5 to postpone adding fluoride to the water supply until there is “conclusive evidence” that fluoride has “no significant neurotoxic effects or other bodily harms.”

Council discussed and voted on the issue in a 10-hour meeting on May 2, during which they listened to opinions both supporting and opposing the addition of fluoride to the water supply.

Bezo previously told The Epoch Times that fluoridation was an issue he heard on the campaign trail leading up to Regina’s municipal election on Nov. 13, 2024.

The Alberta government is implementing new measures to manage escalating measles outbreaks in the province, as case counts spike to levels not seen since 1987.

The province announced 42 active cases as of May 6, bringing the total to 287 since the onset of the outbreaks in March. It is the highest case count in Alberta since 1987, when 690 were confirmed.

“At this time, we are looking at the highest number of measles cases in the province in decades,” interim chief medical officer of health Dr. Sunil Sookram said during a May 5 press conference. “Up until now, we thought the disease had been eradicated—but things have changed. Measles is now circulating in several areas in our province, and it’s quite concerning.”

As of the weekend, three patients under the age of 18 were in intensive care due to the virus, the province has confirmed, saying the majority of those cases were among those not vaccinated for measles. No deaths have been reported thus far.

Health Minister Adriana LaGrange said 95 percent of a population must be immunized to prevent the spread of the disease, but certain health zones in Alberta do not meet this target.

Approximately 80 percent of all confirmed cases are in two of the province’s five health zones, with 171 cases in the south zone and 79 in the central zone. While there are cases in every region of the province, there are fewer in the northern, Calgary, and Edmonton zones where there were 21, 10, and six cases respectively as of May 6. Continue...

The B.C. Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal of the province’s COVID vaccine mandate for health-care workers.

In a May 6 hearing, the court dismissed the appeal on the grounds it was moot, or no longer relevant.

Allison Pejovic, a constitutional lawyer representing the health-care workers, said she was disappointed by the decision, telling The Epoch Times the legal team had expected to argue the case over a number of days.

Pejovic said several Canadian courts have dismissed challenges of pandemic orders on the basis of mootness while, she argued, “the violation of Charter rights and freedoms has been unprecedented during COVID.”

She said the case was an “ideal opportunity” for an appellate court to consider “whether the right of liberty protects a fundamental personal medical decision” of taking a COVID-19 vaccine under threat of termination of employment.

The case was brought by 11 health-care workers and dismissed by the B.C. Supreme Court in 2024, ruling that the mandates did not infringe on workers’ rights or charter freedoms.

The court said the health orders “were reasonable in light of the information available” to the provincial health officer at the time.

The appeal court dismissed the case after the Crown brought a motion arguing mootness, Pejovic said. Continue...

Just two days before U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to meet his Chinese counterpart for the first round of trade talks in Switzerland, Boeing revealed a new order for widebody jets from a Chinese state-owned airline—presumably a calculated gesture of goodwill ahead of negotiations.

Boeing announced that China Airlines has become the "newest 777X customer with an order for 10 777-9 passenger and four 777-8 Freighter airplanes."

"In addition to the firm order, which was booked in March 2025 and was posted as unidentified on Boeing's orders and deliveries website, the airline has options to purchase five 777-9s and four 777-8 Freighters," the plane manufacturer said, adding, "With this order, China Airlines joins an exclusive group of global airlines that have ordered the passenger and freighter variants of the 777X family."

About one month ago, when the U.S. and China unleashed a tit-for-tat tariff war, eventually placing 145% levies on Chinese goods entering the U.S. and a 125% rate on U.S. goods entering China, Juneyao Airlines delayed the delivery of a widebody aircraft from Boeing. This delay was suspected to be part of Beijing's non-tariff countermeasures (including limiting Hollywood film imports, etc...).

Boeing's order announcement comes days before Bessent, who has become the point person in trade negotiations, will sit down with top Chinese trade negotiators in Switzerland to begin the first round of a fair trade.

"The negotiations will begin on Saturday," Bessent said in testimony before the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday.

During a Fox News interview, Bessent emphasized: "We don't want to decouple" with China, adding, "What we want is fair trade."

The key takeaway: China Airlines' order of Boeing 777Xs looks like a kind gesture of goodwill ahead of this weekend's trade talks. Though the order was officially booked in March, Beijing could have easily delayed or canceled it if preliminary trade talks (at U.S. Treasury) were headed in the wrong direction. Instead, the timing suggests momentum may be building toward a breakthrough.

Goldman chief economist Jan Hatzius recently outlined what a potential breakthrough in U.S.-China trade talks might entail.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is calling for the fast-tracking of EU accession talks for Ukraine, though we can imagine quietly behind the scenes other European officials aren't looking forward to the day that one of the world's most corrupt countries joins the bloc.

Speaking at a Europe Day event on Wednesday, von der Leyen urged for the process to start this year, in 2025, in order to "help Ukraine stand strong" and "defy Putin’s intimidations" - according to a readout.

"Today, I would like to focus on how we can do so, and on three priorities for our action," she said. "First, support Ukraine’s defense. Second, complete the phase-out of Russian fossil fuels. And third, accelerate Ukraine’s accession path to our Union."

Canadian investment firm Brookfield, formerly chaired by Liberal leader Mark Carney has close business ties to the Trump family.

In 2018, Brookfield agreed to lease a New York City property from Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. The lease was for a 99-year billion-dollar agreement, which saw the company forking over the full USD $1.1 billion upfront, instead of paying it off annually.

Kushner served as the White House senior advisor to Trump during the time of the Brookfield deal and also dealt with the administration’s relationship to the Middle East, visiting Qatar to discuss its blockade against the U.S., which was eventually lifted.

Brookfield’s second-largest stakeholder during this time was the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, which helped to finance the billion-dollar deal.

The deal was brokered in 2018, before Carney became chair of Brookfield and at a time when Kushner’s family was in debt to repay USD $1.2 billion in mortgage payments by February 2019.

Carney, who still holds $6.8 million in Brookfield financial interests, spoke with Trump for the first time since he took office over the phone Friday, which Carney called “cordial” and “substantive.”

The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it is referring five member states to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for failing to properly implement the Digital Services Act (DSA), Brussels’ flagship legislation aimed at regulating online platforms.

The countries facing legal action are Czechia, Spain, Cyprus, Poland, and Portugal. According to the Commission, these member states either failed to appoint a national Digital Services Coordinator (DSC) or failed to empower those bodies with the authority required to enforce the DSA.

Additionally, none of the five countries has established penalties for violations of the regulation, as mandated by Brussels.

“The DSA required member states to designate one or more competent authorities for the supervision and enforcement of the DSA, and to designate one of them as their national DSC by Feb. 17, 2024,” the Commission said in its press release.

Obby Khan, who was elected as Progressive Conservative (PC) leader on April 26, backs a bill that would consider one’s refusal to acknowledge a person’s request to be referred to by a non-biological pronoun a violation of the law. But he noted that he has concerns about the wording that he wants tightened up.

He recently told reporters that he has heard from people who are scared that the bill, should it become law, would have serious consequences for those who so-called “misgender” a person.

Bill 43, known as the Human Rights Code Amendment Act, was introduced by the ruling New Democratic Party Justice Minister Matt Wiebe in March.

The new law, if passed, adds “gender expression” as a protected category under the province’s Human Rights Code.

In a statement on X on Friday, SBU spokesman Artyom Degtyarenko said two Ukrainian military veterans – a man and a woman – were detained as part of the operation.

The network, Degtyarenko claimed, was run by Hungary’s military intelligence service and tasked with gathering sensitive data on Ukraine’s defenses in Transcarpathia. It also reportedly collected information on local socio-political views, including how residents might respond to a potential Hungarian military incursion.

“For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the Security Service has exposed a Hungarian military intelligence network, which carried out espionage activities to the detriment of our state,” Degtyarenko said. These figures do not include those who were jailed and released throughout the year.

At the end of 2024, China had the largest number of journalists held behind bars (50).

This is likely a low estimate, according to a CPJ report, since censorship makes it difficult to determine the exact number of imprisoned journalists.

The next top jailers of journalists were Israel (43), Myanmar (35), Belarus (31) and Russia (30).

Together, these five countries accounted for more than half of the global total of imprisoned journalists (53 percent), as of the day of the census.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has received approval from the provincial government to begin building Canada’s inaugural small modular reactor, a nuclear facility that will be located next to the Darlington power plant an hour east of Toronto.

The first of four reactors, which are expected to come with a combined cost of nearly $21 billion, will be built in Bowmanville, Ont., says Energy Minister Stephen Lecce. The estimated construction cost of the first reactor is $7.7 billion, with work set to start this year and conclude by 2029, with connection to the grid in 2030.

“Ensuring that we have reliable, affordable energy is essential to the economic sovereignty of our province and country,” Lecce said during a recent press conference near the Darlington nuclear generating station. He noted that the Independent Electricity System Operator is estimating the province will need 75 percent more power by 2050.

“That’s the equivalent of adding four-and-a-half times the city of Toronto to the grid,” he added. “It’s a massive amount of power and … we just don’t have the supply to meet that demand. If we don’t take that strong, decisive action for our future, our economy, there could be really serious repercussions.”

The small modular reactor (SMR) is designed to generate 300 megawatts of electricity, which could supply approximately 300,000 households, Lecce said. Work has already begun to prepare the project site just east of the current nuclear plant along the shores of Lake Ontario. Continue...

Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency says it is sending reinforcements to Ontario and Saskatchewan to help teams fight several forest and brush fires.

Two CL-415 firefighting aircraft and their crews will head to Dryden, Ont., while two other of the same aircraft will head to Meadow Lake, Sask.

Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency, known as SOPFEU, says the teams departed Sunday from Quebec City.

The agency says the current situation in Quebec allows for resources to head to other provinces.

In Ontario, there were six active fires burning across the province shortly before noon Sunday, including one in Haliburton, located about 170 km north of Oshawa, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources’ interactive map.

Freedom Convoy leader Tamara Lich is slated to be sentenced on July 23.

In a recent update by The Democracy Fund, the group noted that “Sentencing for Ms. Lich is scheduled for July 23rd and 24th before Justice Perkins-McVey in Ottawa.”

In April of this year, Lich and Chris Barber were found guilty of mischief for their roles as leaders of the 2022 protest and as social media influencers. The conviction came despite the non-violent nature of the popular movement.

TikTok has been fined €530 million by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) for illegally transferring Europeans’ personal data to China and failing to be transparent with users, according to the Free Beacon and Politico.

In its first ruling on data transfers to China, the DPC said TikTok failed to properly assess how Chinese surveillance laws could impact the safety of European user data and couldn’t ensure adequate protection once the data was transferred.

This is the third-largest fine ever imposed under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As TikTok’s EU headquarters are in Ireland, the Irish DPC serves as its lead regulator.

During the inquiry, TikTok admitted that Chinese surveillance laws—giving authorities broad powers to demand data access—“materially diverge from EU standards.” Despite previously claiming it did not store European or U.S. user data in China, TikTok informed the DPC in April that it had discovered in February that “limited EEA User Data” had, in fact, been stored there. The decision, prompted by a sharp downturn in EV demand and mounting economic uncertainty from U.S. President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on foreign-made automobiles, has cast doubt over the viability of publicly subsidized EV manufacturing in Canada.

The Alliston-based project — touted as a transformative supply chain development when it was announced to much fanfare in April 2024 — was the latest in a wave of nearly $50 billion in government-supported EV initiatives across Ontario and Quebec.

It was expected to create 1,000 new jobs and secure 4,200 existing ones, while enabling the production of up to 240,000 EVs annually by 2028.

But Honda announced Tuesday it will delay the venture for “approximately two years,” citing weakening market conditions.

Indeed, the managers of FP Canadian Newspapers Ltd. of which the Winnipeg Free Press is under, went as far to write to shareholders: “The uncertainty of the political landscape continues to impact the newspaper industry, the impact of which may necessitate cost reduction initiatives to address the continued revenue decline and reliance on government subsidies.”

Last year, the company got $2.8 million in taxpayers’ payroll rebates. The newspaper management wrote: “There can be no assurance the amounts accrued will be realized or that these tax credit programs will continue to be available to us in the future or will not be reduced, changed or eliminated.”

In a first-of-its-kind court victory, the Alberta Court of Justice has ruled that WestJet wrongfully fired an 11-year employee, Duong Yee, who refused the COVID vaccine for religious reasons, even though she was working 100% remotely.

The judge didn’t mince words.

“The Defendant has not met its burden to establish just cause for the reasons noted,” wrote Justice A.P. Argento. “Dismissal for cause was not a proportionate response when the respective interests of the parties are considered and balanced as required.”

In late 2021, Yee — a devout Christian and longtime WestJet accountant — submitted a request for a religious exemption from the company’s mandatory vaccination policy. She cited her faith in “Jesus as [her] healer” and included a letter from her pastor.

WestJet rejected the request, questioning whether her concerns were truly religious, and never followed up for clarification.

And here’s the worst part: WestJet never disputed the sincerity of her religious belief — they just decided that because she also expressed safety concerns about the vaccine, her faith didn’t count.

“The Plaintiff could not hold both a religious objection and a safety concern,” wrote Justice Argento, rejecting that logic outright. “The Defendant’s evidence did not explain how or why the Plaintiff could not hold both.”

Yee was placed on unpaid leave in November 2021 and fired a month later — despite her stellar job performance and the fact that she was working exclusively from home.

Let’s say that again: she posed no risk to colleagues, no risk to passengers, and no disruption to operations. Even her own manager described her as “professional” and said she “met deadlines right up until she was placed on unpaid leave.”

Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Jolani and HTS now control Syria, including the capital city, Damascus.

Al-Jolani has been working to persuade the international media and foreign powers that he has transitioned from a terrorist commander to a statesman, but skepticism remains about whether such a transformation is genuine.

Al-Sharaa is set on meeting with President Donald Trump this week as he starts his Mideast trip in Saudi Arabia.

The Syrian leader is ready to propose to Trump, a Trump Tower in Damascus, a detente with Israel and U.S. access to Syria’s oil and gas.

Prior to his trip to the Middle East President Trump told reporters, “We’re going to have to make a decision on the sanctions … We may take them off of Syria, because we want to give them a fresh start.”

“There is huge potential in the business of new-energy waste, because new energy is where China and the world are going,” said Ma Long, sales manager at a Henan Hairui Intelligent Technology subsidiary. His company already generates 70% of its business from battery and solar panel recycling equipment.

China’s rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and solar power is driving this trend. After a decade of EV growth, the country is now facing a “large-scale retirement of car batteries,” with retired batteries expected to exceed 4 million tonnes annually by 2028 and generate over 280 billion yuan (US$38.5 billion) in industry output, according to state estimates. Retired photovoltaic modules are also set to surge in the next five years.

“The recycling of minerals is largely for the sake of resource security,” said Du Huanzheng, a circular economy expert at Tongji University. Martin Jr., the former interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, who questioned whether journals have become “partisans in various scientific debates.” One liberal academic called the letters “fascist tactics” designed “to intimidate academic journals” triggering similar allegations across the media.

“Experts worry this will have a chilling effect on publications,” reported the New York Times, noting that an obscure journal called CHEST had been targeted.

“DOJ questions science journal about bias, triggering free-speech concerns,” reported the Washington Post, adding that three major publishers of medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and Health Affairs, said they had not received letters, while publisher Springer Nature chose not to comment. NPR reported last week that the New England Journal of Medicine had in fact received a letter as had the American Medical Association’s journal JAMA.

The DisInformation Chronicle has learned that the actual target of Martin’s letters is the Nature Springer journal Nature Medicine, publisher of a highly controversial paper “Proximal Origin” which has faced charges of corruption and calls for retraction. A source inside the Department of Health and Human Services said Trump officials suspect the paper is a quid pro quo, written by the authors to dismiss the possibility of a lab accident and who then received a large grant months later from Tony Fauci.

The existence of the Nature Medicine letter has not been previously reported and is being made public for the first time. The European Commission acted improperly by refusing to release communications with Pfizer to the media, the ruling states

The European Commission wrongly denied the media access to secret text messages between its president, Ursula von der Leyen, and the CEO of pharma giant Pfizer, exchanged during negotiations of a multi-billion dollar Covid-19 vaccine deal, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled on Wednesday.

The so-called “Pfizergate” decision comes as a major embarrassment for the EU chief, who has responsibility for transparency and rule of law issues in the bloc.

The case centers on a 2021 interview von der Leyen gave to the NYT in which she claimed she had been negotiating a deal for 900 million COVID vaccine shots with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla via sms messages.

The NYT subsequently filed an access request for the messages, to which the EC claimed the texts, which have never been released, were not in its possession.

The court ruled that the EC “cannot merely state that it does not hold the requested documents but must provide credible explanations enabling the public and the Court to understand why those documents cannot be found.”

It also criticized the Commission for failing to justify why the texts were not retained and to clarify how they were deleted.

In response, the EC said it recognized the need for greater transparency and promised to issue a new decision with more detailed reasoning. It did not, however, commit to releasing the messages in question. The ruling can be appealed to the European Court of Justice.

A similar CJEU judgment last July found that the EC lacked transparency in how it negotiated vaccine contracts with Pfizer and AstraZeneca. The deals, signed in 2020 and 2021 and worth approximately €2.7 billion ($3 billion), were shielded from disclosure to European Parliament members on the grounds of protecting commercial interests.
