The federal police force clarified the nature of its investigation into the Israel-Hamas conflict after the probe sparked media coverage and raised concerns from pro-Israel advocates in response.

In an exclusive report on June 2, the Toronto Star said the RCMP was probing potential war crimes in the conflict, but wouldn’t share more details about the investigation. Referring to the claim, some Israeli media later said that the RCMP is investigating potential war crimes committed by Canadians serving in the Israeli military.

Reacting to the media coverage, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) said it was “deeply concerning to read sensationalist reports” about the RCMP’s investigation and asked Ottawa to provide clarification.

The group added there are “deadly consequences” when “false narratives are left to fester and go unchallenged,” in reference to recent violent anti-Semitic attacks in the United States. An illegal immigrant from Egypt firebombed pro-Israel protesters in Colorado while yelling “free Palestine” on June 1, injuring 12. In a separate attack, two staffers of the Israeli embassy were killed in Washington on May 21, also by a suspect who yelled “free Palestine.”

The RCMP issued a statement on June 4 in a bid to clarify the nature and scope of its investigation. The force said it has not opened a criminal investigation but rather a “structural investigation” into the conflict.

This type of investigation pertains to the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act and involves collecting, preserving, and assessing relevant information. This information could support future investigative steps should the matter meet a certain jurisdictional and legal threshold, the RCMP said. Continue…

Speaking ahead of the launch of his book, What I Have Learnt from You, the 74-year-old French politician and former Eurocrat said that there has been a noticeable “authoritarian drift” in the EU, which “has increased a notch in the last six years with Ursula von der Leyen, who wants to decide everything.”

Barnier lamented that von der Leyen’s Commission acts like a collection of “super technocrats” rather than politicians beholden to their citizens. “There isn’t enough listening. There isn’t enough listening to the people,” he said.

However, it could be argued that this is a feature of the structures of the EU itself rather than a bug. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has invited Canada’s premiers to a summer meeting in Muskoka with a focus on advancing major projects.

Ford invited his counterparts on June 5 to the annual Council of the Federation (COF) meeting that will take place in Huntsville, Ont., this summer from July 21 to 23.

“Together, premiers are seizing the momentum coming out of the recent First Ministers’ Meeting in Saskatoon to move the projects that will unleash the full potential of Canada’s economy forward,” Ford said in a statement.

The statement says that the meeting will provide an opportunity for the premiers to discuss how they will move forward with “nation-building” projects, continue to manage Canada-U.S. relations, and increase safety in communities across the country.

Premiers will also meet with leaders of national indigenous organizations during the summit “to have focused discussions on economic development, economic reconciliation and other key priorities for Indigenous peoples and communities,” the government of Ontario said.

The COF usually meets in person at least twice per year, with virtual meetings year-round, and consists of all 13 provincial and territorial premiers. The position of chair, which Ford currently holds, rotates annually between the premiers. Continue…

A report from Saskatchewan’s provincial auditor says the health authority isn’t analyzing wait times for people seeking timely access to opioid addiction treatment across the province.

The report noted that the Saskatchewan Health Authority lacks sufficient tracking protocols to assess the effectiveness of its opioid addiction treatment services.

“The Authority does not analyze wait times at its clinics or supply and demand for opioid addiction treatment services across Saskatchewan,” the auditor said in a June 3 news release.

The findings come after the province activated an emergency response on March 12 following more than 300 reported overdoses in Saskatoon, saying there was a “toxic drug crisis” in the city.

Now, the provincial auditor said her team has found “errors and inconsistencies” in four of the Saskatchewan Health Authority opioid addictions programs located in four cities that were deemed “most active,” including Regina and Saskatoon.

Through its testing, it found that clients in Kamsack, a community 264 kilometres northeast of Regina, waited an average of four days before being contacted for an initial appointment. In Saskatoon, that number was 4.75 days, and in Regina it was 1.75 days. Continue…

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) says it has confirmed the identity of a previously unknown World War I soldier buried in a graveyard in France.

Research into the identity of the Canadian soldier started in 2016, about 100 years after he died. The investigation followed an inquiry by an external researcher who raised questions about the captain buried at that location.

The CAF and Department of National Defence (DND) say the soldier, Captain William Webster Wilson, was buried in a grave in Adanac Military Cemetery in Miraumont, France, in 1916.

The CAF confirmed Wilson’s identity in December 2024 after historical and archival DND research, the department said.

Born in 1890 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Wilson joined the Royal Bank of Scotland at the age of 15, working at various branches in Edinburgh.

The Liberal government has introduced a bill that would provide citizenship to individuals born abroad to Canadian parents who themselves were born in a foreign country, following the unsuccessful attempt of a similar bill in Parliament last year.

New Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab presented Bill C-3 in the House of Commons June 5.

The proposed legislation seeks to overturn a change made by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2009 that prohibited Canadians born outside the country from transferring citizenship to their offspring unless those children were born in Canada.

Then-Immigration Minister Diane Finley said the rule was enacted to discourage “Canadians of convenience.” She described the legislation as an easy way to “protect” the value of Canadian citizenship by ensuring all citizens had a “real connection” to the country.

A December 2023 decision by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice concluded the modification was unconstitutional, saying that the “second-generation cut-off rule” was a violation of Charter rights.

‘Irregular’ becomes ‘illegal’ again, while ‘pollution price’ reverts to ‘carbon tax’ as political winds change

In the early days of Ottawa’s frantic push to dissuade the incoming Trump administration from imposing sweeping tariffs, cabinet ministers began reusing a term that hadn’t been in the government’s lexicon since mid-2018: “illegal migration.”

Prior to this, the government called it “irregular migration,” in line with the shift in language south of the border under the previous administration to be more “inclusive” regarding these issues, as well as the media adopting the term in their style guides since the mid-2010s.

The same trend was seen when the Liberal government started using the term “carbon tax” earlier this year once it decided to drop the measure, as it had proved politically costly. Up until then, the government had termed the levy “pollution pricing” or “carbon pricing.“

This in turn influenced how the media covered the taxing policy, with some outlets putting quote marks around the term “carbon tax,” and some preceding it with the phrase “so-called.”

Marco Navarro-Génie, president of the Haultain Research Institute, says it’s worrisome that when governments employ certain words in an effort to change perceptions, the media and even in some cases the education system go along with the trend.

“Words matter. The words that we use have an experiential connection to what we call reality,” he told The Epoch Times.

David Millard Haskell, a professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and a former journalist, says the media should be more discerning when it comes to covering polarizing issues.

“Journalists are not stenographers, but they should be the arbiters of truth as best they can prove it, and that is apart from their own opinions,” Haskell said in an interview. Continue…

Canada’s unemployment rate surged in May, reaching its highest point since 2016, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic period, with 1.6 million people classified as jobless across the country, new data suggests.

The unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 7 percent last month, leading to a total of nearly 14 percent more jobless people compared to the same time last year, a newly released report from Statistics Canada said. It’s also a 6.6 percent rise since the beginning of the year.

The increase observed in May marked the third consecutive month of unemployment growth. The unemployment rate has escalated by a total of 0.4 percentage points since February, StatCan said.

After a breakdown of relations between Canada and India under the previous Liberal government, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Canada for the G7 summit in mid-June.

Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney both confirmed Modi’s attendance in separate announcements on June 6.

“As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests,” Modi said in a social media post, adding that he’s “looking forward” to meeting Carney at the summit.

Modi said he had received a call from Carney and thanked him for the invitation to the summit.

Shortly after Modi made the post, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed the matter in a statement. The PMO said the call between the two leaders took place on June 6.

There is mounting opposition to the Liberal government’s new bill to bolster border security, with critics raising concerns about threats to privacy and civil liberties.

Opposition parties criticized the new Bill C-2, the Strong Borders Act, in second reading in the House of Commons on June 5. While parties agree on the need to crack down on criminal activities involving the border, there are concerns the bill is going too far in granting new powers to security agencies.

The bill would give police and CSIS access to internet subscriber information without a warrant and allow Canada Post to open letters.

Some of the criticism that surfaced in the previous Parliament when the Liberals tabled their Online Harms legislation Bill C-63 is coming back to the forefront. Bill C-63 lapsed when Parliament was prorogued earlier this year, but beforehand the justice minister had said it would be split into two bills given opposition to provisions impacting freedom of expression.

Tory MP Michelle Rempel Garner said Bill C-2, combined with the Online Harms legislation, would allow the government to “target whatever it deems to be spreading hateful content.”

She said this would “essentially form Voltron-type censorship,” in an apparent reference to a Japanese anime series from the 1980s that had been heavily censored to remove death scenes before being presented to an American audience. Continue…

Canada and China have agreed to “regularize” high-level talks between the two countries following a call between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese Premier Li Qiang on June 5, the prime minister’s office said.

“The leaders exchanged views on bilateral relations, including the importance of engagement, and agreed to regularize channels of communication between Canada and China,” says a readout of the meeting from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

During the conversation, Carney and Li also discussed trade between the two countries, and “committed their governments” to cooperating to address the fentanyl crisis, according to the PMO’s statement.

It also says Carney raised “trade irritants” affecting agricultural and food products, referring to tariffs Beijing recently imposed on Canada. The statement also says Carney raised “other issues,” without providing further details.

The PMO confirmed to the media this was the first conversation Carney held with Beijing since becoming prime minister.

Montreal police have arrested a man previously convicted of supporting al-Qaeda, after he allegedly said he wanted to kill a large number of people by detonating bombs on public transit.

Mohammed Abdullah Warsame, 51, has been charged with uttering threats after he allegedly told an employee at a homeless shelter he intended to carry out an attack, RCMP said in a June 5 release.

Montreal police (SPVM) responded after receiving the report from the shelter, RCMP said. SPVM then informed the RCMP, who took over the investigation and arrested Warsame. The investigation is ongoing.

A Canadian with Somali background, Warsame previously pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to a charge of conspiring to provide material support and resources to al-Qaeda. He was sentenced to more than seven years in a U.S. prison and was deported to Canada in 2010 as part of a plea deal.

In March 2000, Warsame travelled to Afghanistan and attended an al-Qaeda training camp, according to court documents. He stayed there for about three to five months receiving training in physical fitness, the use of weapons, and martial arts.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the men were arrested following an online operation where police posed as children on various platforms and waited for someone to make contact.

“Investigators utilized undercover techniques to access online chatrooms and social media applications in order to identify, locate and arrest persons looking to sexually exploit children,” OPP said.

The accused range in age from 18 to 73 years old, and police have laid a total of 128 charges against them.

The majority of the charges are luring a person under 16, making sexually explicit material available to a child, and possession of or making available child pornography.

“The Bloc Québécois is committed to fiercely defending our agricultural model and we will never let go,” Bloc MP Yves Perron said in a June 5 statement. “We are now counting on speedy passage in the Senate for the bill to come into force as soon as possible.”

Canada’s supply management system coordinates production and demand of dairy, eggs, and poultry products, while controlling imports as a way to set stable prices for farmers and consumers. The system was created in 1972 in response to decreasing prices for the products, and it imposes tariffs of up to 300 percent.

“We are pleased that all parties have today reiterated their support for our work for agricultural entrepreneurs in Quebec and Canada,” Perron said. “This rapidity of action is crucial in the current trade negotiations with the United States as we need to ensure that no part of the management of the offer can be ceded.” Continue…

The 23-meter (75-foot) monument was erected in 1975 when Kyrgyzstan was part of the Soviet Union. Photos appeared online Saturday showing the statue flat on the ground after being lowered by a crane.

While many countries formerly part of the Soviet Union have moved to downplay their ties to Russia as part of efforts to reshape national identity, the monument was taken down with little public fanfare and officials in Osh framed the removal as routine city planning.

In a statement, Osh City Hall called the move “common practice” aimed at improving the “architectural and aesthetic appearance” of the area.

Officials also noted that Lenin monuments have been “dismantled or moved to other places” in Russian cities including St Petersburg and Belgorod, and said that the issue “should not be politicized.”

The monument, they said, will be replaced by a flagpole, as was the case when a different Lenin statue was relocated in the capital, Bishkek.

The move came a week after Kyrgyzstan’s ally Russia unveiled a monument to brutal Soviet dictator Josef Stalin at one of Moscow’s busiest subway stations.

Doctors and nurses licensed in the United States can begin working immediately in Ontario hospitals and clinics upon relocating, the provincial government announced.

The announcement on June 5 is part of Ontario’s ongoing plan to strengthen its health care system and to increase the number of health care professionals working in the province.

The latest move will enable qualified U.S.-licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and registered practical nurses to start working in Ontario health settings without first registering with a regulatory college.

Specifically, the American health care professionals will be allowed to work for up to six months while seeking registration with either the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or the College of Nurses of Ontario.

To be eligible, these physicians and nurses would still need to go through the standard Canadian immigration or work permit process, and that they “must be licensed in their home jurisdiction with no history of misconduct or incompetence.”

“By cutting the red tape that is delaying highly trained U.S.-licensed doctors and nurses from being able to live and work in Ontario, we are making bold strides to ensure Ontario patients receive timely and accessible care,” Sylvia Jones, deputy premier and minister of health, said in a statement. Prime Minister Mark Carney says Ottawa won’t overrule a province’s opposition to pipeline construction, as he will seek consensus from all relevant stakeholders before the project gets the green light.

Carney made the comment during a June 6 press conference, where he outlined his government’s plan to eliminate federal trade barriers and advance nation-building projects through the introduction of the One Canadian Economy Act, also known as Bill C-5.

Carney said the bill consists of two parts. The first will create “one Canadian economy out of 13” with the removal of “federal barriers to internal trade and labour mobility.” The second part supports the development of major projects that align with national interests, contingent on discussions with provinces, territories, and indigenous peoples.

Asked by a reporter if he would impose a pipeline project that has been identified as being in the national interest but for which a province objects, Carney said, “No.”

“Simply no. We must have a consensus of all the provinces and the indigenous people … If a province doesn’t want it, it’s impossible. It’s not the choice of the federal government,” he said in French.

Carney’s remark echoed comments he made in an interview last month, in which he said he would support pipeline development only if there is a “consensus” for their construction. The prime minister subsequently met with provincial and territorial premiers on June 2 to discuss infrastructure and energy project priorities, although the meeting concluded without any specific project commitments. Several regions are experiencing “high risk” air quality levels due to smoke from the wildfires in the prairies.

Environment Canada issued an air quality statement for the Ottawa region on June 5, and expects the statement to last until the morning of June 8.

Downtown Ottawa’s Air Quality Health Index reached “high risk” at 8 p.m. on June 5 and remained there until 2 a.m. on June 7 before tapering off to “moderate risk” levels.

The agency on June 7 listed some cities including Toronto and Montreal as having a moderate to high risk.

While most of Ontario has been experiencing poor air quality due to wildfires in the prairie provinces, eastern Ontario experienced some of the worst air quality and visibility on June 6 with Kingston’s index at “high risk,” Cornwall’s at “high risk,” and Belleville’s at “very high risk.”

As of 4 p.m. on June 7, the index for Ottawa, Kingston, Cornwall, and Belleville had all decreased to “moderate risk” levels. Continue…

Free speech in the United Kingdom has long been in free fall, with expanding criminalization and regulation of speech. Much of this effort is carried out to combat disinformation or radicalism.

The subjectivity of such “Prevent” standards is evident in a new media report that officers are being trained to look for “cultural nationalism,” including those people who are concerned that Western culture is under threat from mass migration.

Such concerns are now viewed as indicative of “right-wing terrorist ideology.”

Europe, like the United States, is showing a surge in political support for politicians seeking to limit and reverse mass immigration into their countries. That includes Great Britain.

The material is part of an online training course for British hospitals, schools, universities, and other public institutions that are expected to identify and report extremists to the government.

The training would subject a large number of British citizens to potential investigation as right-wing extremists. In 2023, a government report by William Shawcross concluded “populist conservative voices who have nothing to do with violent extremism” are often identified by investigators even though the overwhelming number of attacks committed in the UK were “Islamist in nature.”

There have also been warnings that by classifying “cultural nationalism” as an indication of extremism, the anti-terror scheme could be used to stifle public debate.

A Home Office spokesman insisted, however, that “Prevent is not about restricting debate or free speech, but about protecting those susceptible to radicalisation.”

Canada’s Special Forces Helicopters are Obsolete for the Role They are Tasked to Carry Out July 10, 2023 RUSI(NS) Staff

The article “Canadian Special Forces pilots warn they are being held back by inferior equipment and the obsolete Griffon helicopter”1 by defence correspondant David Pugliese in the Ottawa Citizen 5 July 2023 caught the attention of the RUSI(NS) Security Affairs Committee. The committee noted this matter should be addressed. What was startling in reading the article is the fact that serving Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) pilots flying the Griffon helicopter have openly warned that they are being held back by inferior equipment. But first, a bit of the background about the helicopter.

100 Bell CH-146 Griffon helicopters were ordered in 1992 in a sole source deal with Bell Textron Canada and delivered to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) between 1994 and 1998. They were intended to replace the Kiowa light observation helicopter and the Twin Huey utility helicopter. What should be noted is that the Griffon was not designed as a combat aircraft but a military utility version of the Bell 412. It carried no defensive or offensive armaments. 85 of the aircraft were assigned to Air Command (no RCAF) in the tactical helicopter role and the remaining 15 to base flights for local search and rescue operations.

The original intent was to retire the CH-146 in 2021. However, on 30 January 2019 the Department of National Defence decided to extend the life of the aircraft through 2031 with an upgrade in engines and avionics to the tune of $800 million. The first modernized helicopter is expected to be delivered in 2024 and the remaining aircraft will be upgraded by 2028 according to the CAF. Even with the planned upgrades, the CH-146 is considered obsolete for special forces operating in today’s threat environment.

From a flying perspective, the Griffon is finicky to fly. It is easy to overtorque whereas the US Blackhawk, for example, is hard to overtorque. Additionally, the Griffon is risky operating at higher altitudes and in hot temperatures. What has long seemed unattainable for successive Canadian governments—meeting NATO’s current defence spending guideline—will be reached this fiscal year, Prime Minister Mark Carney said.

Increasing the pay for soldiers and repairing existing Canadian Armed Forces equipment are some of the measures being planned to reach the target.

Carney announced on June 9 Canada will spend 2 percent of its gross domestic product on defence this year, beating his initial campaign pledge to meet the target by 2030. This is also seven years earlier than his predecessor, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, had initially planned.

Touting the accomplishment could be short-lived. The NATO military alliance is expected to agree later this month to raise the bar to 5 percent, with 3.5 percent dedicated to core defence spending and 1.5 percent to defence and security-related investments, which can include infrastructure.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she will be attending the upcoming G7 Leaders Summit in Canada held in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17.

Sheinbaum made the announcement during a press conference on June 9, adding that Mexico’s foreign affairs minister is working on setting up bilateral meetings and that it is “likely” a meeting will also take place with U.S. President Donald Trump.

On May 28 Sheinbaum said Prime Minister Mark Carney had invited her to the summit during their initial phone conversation on May 15 but that she hadn’t decided whether to attend. Sheinbaum also said at the time that her invitation could involve a meeting with Trump.

The G7 is made up of the seven developed economies of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan, as well as the European Union as a non-enumerated member. Russia was a member of what was the G8 from 1997 until 2014, when it was removed over its invasion and annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have all been invited to the upcoming G7 summit, and all have said they will attend.

Michael Yang, 37, was taken into custody upon his arrival from Vancouver, British Columbia. According to officials, Yang was flagged by the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as having an active warrant out of Mason County, Washington.

The NCIC is a nationwide law enforcement database that allows agencies to share critical information, including active warrants for a broad range of crimes. The investigation found the unencrypted USB storage device held the personal data of 1,741 individuals, which included witnesses, complainants, subjects of interest, and informants, as well as police personnel and civilian staff.

“The RCMP’s investigation also established that only some of the documents on the device were password protected and that the device itself was not encrypted nor password protected,” the report reads.

“Information on the device was highly sensitive … and it was found circulating in the criminal community. This creates a higher risk that individuals could be seriously harmed.”

The storage device contained personal information such as names, biographical details, citizenship status, contact information, criminal history, dates and locations of birth and death, employee identification numbers, physical characteristics, and signatures. The Ontario Provincial Police has announced a historic fentanyl seizure following two lengthy investigations that also dismantled a drug ring accused of using the dark web and Canada Post to ship drugs across the country.

Investigators seized “a staggering” 43.5 kilograms of fentanyl equalling approximately 435,000 potentially lethal street-level doses during its investigations, says Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

“To put that in perspective, a population of 435,000 would be the fifth-largest urban population centre in the province of Ontario,” Carrique said in a June 10 press conference at OPP General Headquarters in Orillia.

Police also seized more than $2.5 million worth of other drugs destined for shipment across nine provinces and territories, he said. The investigations, dubbed Project Bionic and Project Golden, have resulted in 19 people facing more than 200 charges under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Continue…

The federal government frequently failed to follow procurement rules when awarding work to GC Strategies, the company behind the $59.5 million ArriveCan application, the auditor general’s latest report has found.

“Federal organizations are required to monitor the work performed by contractors. However, we noted that federal organizations frequently disregarded government policies in this area,” the June 10 report said.

Auditor General Karen Hogan said in her report that a total of 106 professional services contracts from 31 federal organizations were awarded to the IT staffing firm between 2015 and 2024, valued at $64.5 million. In 33 percent of the contracts, the federal organizations could not show that the contract resources had the experience needed to complete the work.

In 46 percent of GC Strategies contracts examined by the auditor general, there was no evidence that all the services had been delivered before the company received payment from the agencies. As such, the auditor general was unable to conclude whether government officials had contravened the Financial Administration Act.

In one case, a contract file with the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario showed that only one out of three deliverables were received, while evidence was missing for the other two cases. GC Strategies had been contracted to support the development of a data strategy roadmap, and was paid $22,000 for the full contract.

Additionally, the auditor general found that in 58 percent of the non‑competitive contracts examined, the organizations failed to assess whether there would be benefits in calling for bids despite a requirement to do so in most cases. In cases where the organizations gave justifications for this, they cited the need for specialized expertise, managing unexpected workload increases, or filling in for public servants during temporary absences. Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 7% in May — its highest in over eight years, excluding the pandemic — with just 8,800 jobs added, according to the Financial Post..

Full-time employment increased by 58,000, offset by a decline in part-time work. Private sector jobs grew by 61,000, while public sector employment fell by 21,000 due to fewer temporary hires after April’s federal election.

The Financial Post writes that manufacturing lost 12,200 jobs last month, contributing to a four-month decline of 55,000. Transportation and warehousing also shed 15,000 positions. Employment grew in wholesale and retail trade, utilities, finance, and real estate but dropped in manufacturing, public administration, and accommodation and food services.

Economists say the rise in unemployment is partly due to U.S. tariffs dampening hiring, with trade-sensitive regions like Windsor (10.8% jobless rate) and Oshawa (9.1%) hit hardest. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will start a new journal that will help change the culture of science, the agency’s director said in a newly released interview.

Bhattacharya said he envisions people being able to see summaries of similar papers that looked at the same questions.

“A scientific journal put out by the NIH, a high-profile journal will then make publishing replication work a high-profile scientific, high-prestige scientific activity,” he added later.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in May that federal scientists would likely be told to stop publishing in medical journals and, if that happened, the NIH would launch journals that would publish the scientists’ research.

Kennedy said that the existing journals have problems such as not publishing all of the data that underpins studies, while Bhattacharya said the journals will not publish replication research. Both officials have said they want the government to devote resources to replication, with Kennedy estimating that 20 percent of the NIH budget be designated for that purpose.

Replication is the process of taking a study, repeating it, and seeing if the results are the same.

While some scientists conduct meta-analyses, or studies that sum up existing literature on a topic—which could be considered a form of replication—“it’s really difficult to make a career out of doing replication work as a general matter,” Bhattacharya said in the podcast. Continue…
