USIP’s mission, rooted in the 1984 United States Institute of Peace Act, is to foster peace through research, education, and on-the-ground efforts. Its $55.46 million FY 2025 budget supports activities like analyzing climate-driven conflicts in the Sahel, which informs USAID’s aid strategies, and training 1,200 mediators in 2024, including UN peacekeepers for missions in South Sudan (USIP: Budget; InterAction). A standout success was its role in Tunisia’s 2010s democratic transition, where training for civil society mediators contributed to the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize for the National Dialogue Quartet (USIP: About). Yet, most programs, like the 2023 South Sudan dialogues with 20-30 leaders to curb hate speech, lack data on whether they reduced violence, leaving observers questioning their impact (USIP: About).

Enough..... ENOUGH.

I don't want to hear about US TROOPS in SUDAN THIS IS CRAP!

The Dust Mass Shed by 3I/ATLAS

December 26, 2025

In my latest essay — accessible here, I showed that the characteristic radius of dust particles in the anti-tail from 3I/ATLAS must be much bigger than 1 micron in order for them to reach the observed length of this jet and much smaller than 100 microns in order for them to reach the required jet speed through drag on the outflowing gas.

My calculation implies that the anti-tail contains dust particles with a characteristic radius of order 10 microns. The mass loss rate carried by these dust particles can be estimated from the brightness of glow surrounding 3I/ATLAS.

The total luminosity of the glow around 3I/ATLAS during the month after perihelion is equivalent to the reflection of sunlight from a spherical mirror of 10-kilometers radius, which is a billion (10⁹) times larger than the 10-micron radius of a dust particle.

Since area scales as radius squared, there must be (10⁹)²=10^{18} dust particles to yield the total luminosity of scattered sunlight in the glow around 3I/ATLAS.

Since the mass of a single 10-micron dust particle is ~10^{-8} grams, the total mass in scattering particles is 10 million kilograms.

The duration over which this mass must be supplied is of order the solar deceleration time of the dust particles, after which the dust is dispersed.

For the jet length L=400,000km, and the solar deceleration value of A~0.01cm/s² associated with particle radius of R~10micron, we get a required supply time,

t_supply ~ (2L/A)^{1/2} ~ 1 month = 3 million seconds.

This implies a mass loss rate in 10-micron dust particles of 10 million kilograms in 3 million seconds or ~3.3 kg/s, which is a fraction of 0.7% of the total mass loss rate of gas Mdot~500 kg/s.

The dust-to-gas ratio in the interstellar medium of the Milky-Way galaxy is similar, of order ~1%, but most of it is in particles with a radius below 1 micron. However, in molecular clouds, larger dust particles with R~10micron are made. This raises the question:

Did 3I/ATLAS originate from a molecular cloud, where it collected 10-micron dust particles on its surface?

The additional anomalies of 3I/ATLAS (listed here) raise other questions about its nature, to which we do not have answers yet.

Being honest about what we do not know, would motivate us to seek answers. Those who are not curious about the unknown and fill their mind with pride about what they know, end up being dull.

Below is a delightful correspondence with a young girl who was inspired to become a scientist after viewing one of my interviews. She gives me hope that the next generation of scientists will be better than those who came before them.

U.S. House advances GOP-backed energy reliability bill

The “State Planning for Reliability and Affordability Act,” was introduced earlier this year by U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Colorado.

Legislation looking to lower energy prices nationally successfully passed the U.S. House on a slightly bipartisan vote.

H.R. 3628, titled the “State Planning for Reliability and Affordability Act,” was introduced earlier this year by U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Colorado.

The bill would direct certain state authorities that oversee electric utilities to place a greater emphasis on long-term electric reliability. It would do so by amending the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978.

Evans applauded its passage and called out Democrats, specifically in Colorado.

“For years Colorado’s ruling Democrats have pushed out-of-touch policies and burdensome regulations that have led to skyrocketing energy bills and increased financial strain, resulting in further mental and physical stress on hard-working families across the state,” he said.

The bill has not yet been taken up by the U.S. Senate.

Republicans have majorities in both the House and Senate, but would need seven Democratic votes in the Senate to prevent a filibuster. Under those circumstances, the Republicans' bill appears to have a slim chance of passing. According to one prediction, it has a 34% chance of being enacted.

During the vote in the U.S. House, four Democrats did cross the aisle to vote for the bill. Two of those were California representatives, one from Texas, and one from Washington. One Republican from Nevada, U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei, voted against its passage.

The bill ensures states prioritize “reliable generation facilities” in their 10-year energy plan periods. This comes as more and more states, like Colorado, move away from coal-fueled power plants toward other sources that are considered “clean energy.”

Some policymakers and special interest groups remain skeptical of the move away from coal, and even the state acknowledges its role in energy production.

In 2023, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that coal-fired power plants accounted for 32% of Colorado's total in-state energy generation.

While down significantly from 68% in 2010, that is still a notable portion of the state’s energy generation.

Additionally, a 2022 report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration found that, between coal, petroleum and natural gas, coal produced the least amount of the state’s carbon dioxide emissions.

The report found that almost all of coal’s emissions were due to the electric power sector, while petroleum’s was from transportation, and natural gas was almost evenly distributed throughout the sectors, including electric power.

Evans, who has been labeled by Democrats as “anti-clean energy,” argued his legislation is a necessary step to prioritize reliability and affordability.

He points to rising energy costs, both in Colorado and nationally. According to polling, Coloradans report a 24% increase in electricity costs since 2021. Just in the past year, 64% of Americans say their power bills have risen.

“This legislation puts Coloradans first by holding state regulatory entities like Colorado Public Utilities Commission accountable by new federal standards, to ensure they are focused on considering energy reliability and affordability,” Evans said. “I’m proud to lead the charge on legislation that lowers costs, uplifts working-class Americans, and strengthens our nation's energy dominance.”

19 Blue States Sue Trump Admin to Preserve Right to Perform Child Sex Changes

by Ben Kew Dec. 26, 2025 7:40 am

A total of nineteen blue states are suing the Trump administration in a bid to protect the right to perform child sex changes.

Last week, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he would cut off Medicare and Medicaid funding to any provider that offers so-called gender-affirming treatment to minors.

“Under my leadership, and answering President Trump’s call to action, the federal government will do everything in its power to stop unsafe, irreversible practices that put our children at risk,” Kennedy said at the time.

The Oregon-led lawsuit claims that the decision “exceeds the Secretary’s authority and violates the Administrative Procedure Act and the Medicare and Medicaid statutes.”

Oregon Attorney General Dayfield argued that child sex changes are an essential form of healthcare.

His office said in a press release:

Attorney General Dan Rayfield today led a coalition of 18 other states and the District of Columbia in suing to ensure the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) cannot threaten providers with a so-called declaration that baselessly and unlawfully attempts to limit a family’s ability to work with their providers to make the healthcare decisions without interference from the federal government.

Federal judge blocks ICE from arresting migrants appearing for court dates in Northern California

The decision keeps ICE and the DOJ’s Executive Office for Immigration Review from “lying in wait for asylum seekers and other noncitizens at routine hearings throughout the region."

Published: December 25, 2025 9:07pm

A federal judge in San Francisco ruled on Wednesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement and its Justice Department counterpart cannot engage in “sweeping” civil arrests at immigration courthouses in Northern California.

“This circumstance presents noncitizens in removal proceedings with a Hobson’s choice between two irreparable harms,” Judge P. Casey Pitts wrote in his Christmas Eve decision.

“First, they may appear in immigration court and face likely arrest and detention,” the judge wrote. “Alternatively, noncitizens may choose not to appear and instead to forego their opportunity to pursue their claims for asylum or other relief from removal.”

The decision keeps ICE and the DOJ’s Executive Office for Immigration Review from “lying in wait for asylum seekers and other noncitizens at routine hearings throughout the region — a move that would effectively restore pre-Trump prohibition on such arrests,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

A Manhattan district judge ruled the opposite way on a similar case this fall. That could lead to a Supreme Court challenge to courthouse arrests in 2026.

The Trump administration said it plans to appeal Wednesday’s decision to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Maine suspends Medicaid payments to Somali charity after audits uncover more than $1M in fraud

Red flags were raised by Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, who warned the U.S. Treasury of welfare fraud being committed by Gateway.

Published: December 25, 2025 10:08pm

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has suspended Medicaid payments to a Somali-run charity after possible fraud was discovered during several audits of the charity’s finances.

The DHHS found that the Gateway Community Services overbilled by more than $1 million from March 2021 through December 2022 for what was supposed to be “interpreting services” to Somali migrants, according to Breitbart.

Just the News reported on other allegations of fraud regarding Gateway Community Services that have recently come to light following the charges of at least a $1 billion fraud ring involving Somali immigrants in Minneapolis.

The current suspension of Medicaid funding comes after red flags were raised by Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, who warned the U.S. Treasury of welfare fraud being committed by Gateway.

Gateway, which was founded in 2015 by Somali migrant Abdullahi Ali, who has previously drawn scrutiny for other possible financial fraud, also is connected to a number of prominent Democrats in Maine, including B.J. McCollister, who served in Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign for the White House and was chief of staff to Maine Democrat Senate President Troy Jackson.

“This is taxpayer money, and we should be looking into this, and I’m relieved that the federal government is finally stepping in, I think, largely due to the inaction of the leaders in Maine,” said Assistant Maine Senate Minority Leader Republican Matt Harrington, who has been raising concerns about Gateway since last May.

Pentagon report: Chinese military buildup and shift in nuclear force doctrine threatens US homeland

“China maintains a large and growing arsenal of nuclear, maritime, conventional long-range strike, cyber and space capabilities able to directly threaten Americans’ security,” according to the report.

China's military buildup is making “the U.S. homeland increasingly vulnerable,” according to the Pentagon’s annual China military power report.

This is the result of a combination of their decades-long arms buildup and a shift in nuclear force doctrine. “China maintains a large and growing arsenal of nuclear, maritime, conventional long-range strike, cyber and space capabilities able to directly threaten Americans’ security,” according to the report.

The report was made public Tuesday, and it warns that the People’s Liberation Army continues on pace toward its 2027 modernization goals, according to China expert Bill Gertz reporting for The Washington Times.

Those goals include “preparations for using force to annex Taiwan and threatening nuclear strikes on the United States to prevent American forces from intervening in a defense of the self-ruled island,” according to Gertz.

The report states that the Trump administration’s relations with China are “stronger” than in many years, and that the U.S. does not seek to “strangle, dominate, or humiliate China.”

Striking a conciliatory tone, the report says that while the U.S. military is ready to defend American interests in the Indo-Pacific, “we seek only to deny the ability of any country in the Indo-Pacific to dominate us or our allies.”

In 2026, biohacking — the quest to extend lifespans — is set to go mainstream, as consumers gain access to products and tools once out of reach.

The longevity economy is projected to reach $63 billion by 2035, nearly triple its 2024 value — and a wave of new companies is helping fuel that growth. Take Function Health, recently featured on LinkedIn’s latest Top Startups list. The company offers preventative care via more than 100 lab tests — from cancer detection to genetic heart risks — and counts Matt Damon, Kevin Hart and Colin Kaepernick among its backers.

It’s hardly alone: Netflix's "Don't Die" documentary speaks to the consumer fascination with biohacking, while tech leaders from Peter Thiel to Sam Altman are investing billions in longevity startups. Money from major investment groups is flowing in, too.

The hype will grow as people take more ownership of their health. The number of tools for tracking everything from sleep to blood sugar has exploded, and many are being marketed directly to consumers. With health care systems globally strained by doctor shortages, individuals — especially those with higher incomes — will seek out their own tests and treatments.

How do you think people’s approach to improving their health will change in 2026? Weigh in below. And check out the rest of this year's Big Ideas here: lnkd.in/BigIdeas2026.

Tonlé Sap, Cambodia

Dec. 26, 2025

Base image, overlaid with flood information captured on December 23, 2025, by the VIIRS instrument aboard the NOAA-20 platform.

Tonlé Sap is visible in the center of this false color corrected reflectance (Bands M11-I2-I1) image captured on Dec. 23, 2025, during the dry season, by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 platform. Dark blue/black areas show areas covered in water.

Tonlé Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, located in northwest Cambodia. Fed by rivers and rainfall, the size and volume of the lake varies throughout the year.

In the dry season (November to March), the minimum area is about 2,500-3,000 square kilometers (970 - 1,160 square miles) with a volume of 1 cubic kilometer (0.24 mi3).

In the rainy season (May - October), the lake swells and can reach a maximum area of 16,000 square kilometers (6,200 square miles) and the volume can reach about 80 cubic kilometers (19 mi3).

The map above shows the false color corrected reflectance image on the left side and the Flood (3-day Window) layer on the right side.

Swipe the center bar back and forth to compare the dark blue/black areas that represent water in the left image with areas classified as surface water (in cyan), recurring flood (in yellow), and flood (in red) in the right image.

The Flood layer provides a daily global map of flooding and accumulates water detections for all observations (from the NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 platforms) over the 3 day compositing period, and if the total exceeds the required threshold, the pixel is marked as water.

These pixels are then classified as surface water (displayed in cyan), recurring flood (yellow), or flood (red), based on separate reference water and recurring flood layers.

The recurring flood class was introduced on December 10, 2025, and helps discriminate unusual flooding from recurring flooding, which is defined as flooding which has been observed in the same location in roughly 1/3 of the years in the reprocessed 22 year MODIS flood product archive (2003-2024).

This comparison shows how the flood layer differs before and after the recurring flood class was introduced on Dec. 10, 2025.

On the left side is the flood layer from Dec. 9, 2025, which shows the main portion of the lake in cyan, with much of the surrounding area in red to indicate the flood class.

The right side shows the flood layer from Dec. 23 2025, where the recurring flood class has been introduced.

The updated flood layer demonstrates that most flooding is occurring in regularly flooded areas and that the flooded areas are not unusual. Learn more in the MODIS/VIIRS NRT Global Flood User Guide.

Supernova from the dawn of the universe captured by James Webb Space Telescope

December 25, 2025

An international team of astronomers has achieved a first in probing the early universe, using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), detecting a supernova—the explosive death of a massive star—at an unprecedented cosmic distance.

The explosion, designated SN in GRB 250314A, occurred when the universe was only about 730 million years old, placing it deep in the era of reionization.

This remarkable discovery provides a direct look at the final moments of a massive star from a time when the first stars and galaxies were just beginning to form.

The event, which has been reported on in the recently published academic paper JWST reveals a supernova following a gamma-ray burst at z ≃ 7.3, (Astronomy & Astrophysics, 704, December 2025), was initially flagged by a bright burst of high-energy radiation, known as a long-duration Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB), detected by the space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) on March 14, 2025.

Follow-up observations with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (ESO/VLT) confirmed the extreme distance.

The key finding came from targeted observations with JWST's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCAM) approximately 110 days after the burst. Scientists were able to separate the light of the explosion from its faint, underlying host galaxy.

Co-author, and astrophysicist at UCD School of Physics, Dr. Antonio Martin-Carrillo said, "The key observation, or smoking gun, that connects the death of massive stars with gamma-ray bursts is the discovery of a supernova emerging at the same sky location.

Almost every supernova ever studied has been relatively nearby to us, with just a handful of exceptions to date. When we confirmed the age of this one, we saw a unique opportunity to probe how the universe was there and what type of stars existed and died back then.

"Using models based on the population of supernovae associated with GRBs in our local universe, we made some predictions of what the emission should be and used it to propose a new observation with the James Webb Space Telescope.

To our surprise, our model worked remarkably well and the observed supernova seems to match really well the death of stars that we see regularly. We were also able to get a glimpse of the galaxy that hosted this dying star."

The data indicate that the distant supernova is surprisingly similar in brightness and spectral properties to the prototype GRB-associated supernova, SN 1998bw, which exploded in the local universe.

This similarity suggests that the massive star that collapsed to create GRB 250314A was not significantly different from the progenitors of GRBs observed locally, despite the vastly different physical conditions (such as lower metallicity) in the early universe.

The observations also ruled out a much more luminous event, such as a superluminous supernova (SLSN).

The findings challenge the assumption that the stars of the early universe, formed under extremely low-metallicity conditions, would lead to markedly different, perhaps brighter or bluer, stellar explosions than those seen today.

While this discovery provides a powerful anchor point for understanding stellar evolution in the early universe, it also opens new questions about the observed uniformity.

The research team plans to secure a second epoch of JWST observations in the next one to two years.

By that time, the supernova light is expected to have faded significantly (by over two magnitudes), allowing the team to completely characterize the properties of the faint host galaxy and confirm the supernova's contribution.

China launches internet satellites into space

Last Updated: 26 Dec 2025 - 03:31 pm

Beijing, China: China today launched a Long March-8A rocket carrying a group of internet satellites into space.

The rocket lifted off from the Hainan launch site in southern China and successfully placed low-Earth-orbit internet satellites into their predetermined orbit.

The launch comes as part of China’s efforts to build a competing space-based internet network. It also represents a new mission for the Long March rocket series, which uses environmentally friendly fuel.

It is worth noting that China had launched a group of satellites on Dec. 7 aboard a Long March-8A rocket from the same province, with the payload successfully deployed into its planned orbit.

That mission marked the first time the Long March-8A rocket series relied on coal-based rocket fuel instead of traditional kerosene.

Minneapolis Public Schools in the Crosshairs for Discriminating Against White People

December 26, 2025

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has filed a federal lawsuit against Minneapolis Public Schools, alleging the district engaged in unlawful racial discrimination in its hiring and employment practices, according to an exchange between Carl Higbie and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.

During the discussion, Higbie outlined the allegations at the center of the lawsuit, which targets staffing goals and programs within Minneapolis Public Schools that the Justice Department says violate federal employment discrimination laws.

“It should come as no surprise, though, that Tim waltz would complain that the Vice President was comfortable in his own melanin content, considering the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, led by Harmeet Dhillon, is now suing Minneapolis Public Schools for racial discrimination against teachers,” Higbie said.

Higbie said the lawsuit focuses on explicit racial targets adopted by the district.

“Now the lawsuit noting that MPs the public schools seeks to increase their BIPOC staffing to at least 40% by 2026 and that by 2026 and 27 at least by 54.3% of new teachers that identify as bipoc,” he said.

He also highlighted allegations that Minneapolis Public Schools offered race-specific benefits unavailable to other teachers.

“The suit also alleges that MPs, the public school system, awards black men teacher fellowships, additional benefits not available to female or non black teachers,” Higbie said.

The most exciting exoplanet discoveries of 2025

December 26, 2025

This year, the number of NASA-tracked confirmed worlds discovered beyond our solar system surpassed 6,000, and several thousand more await confirmation.

The milestone, reached just three decades after the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the first planet orbiting a sunlike star in 1995, is largely the result of the planet-hunting power of NASA's Kepler space telescope and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

The growing tally reflects how dramatically humanity's view of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, has expanded — and how diverse its planetary population has turned out to be.

Far from mirroring the relatively flat, orderly architecture of our own solar system, new observations and more detailed reexaminations of familiar worlds revealed entire classes of planets with no counterparts at home — super-Earths, mini-Neptunes and hot Jupiters — as well as worlds on contorted orbits that are forcing astronomers to rethink how planets form and evolve.

As the year comes to a close, here's a look back at some of the most intriguing, puzzling and rule-breaking exoplanets astronomers studied in 2025. These worlds illustrate both how far exoplanet science has come and how much there still is to learn.

"Tatooine" worlds

More "Tatooine-like" worlds leapt from science fiction into the exoplanet database this year, as astronomers identified multiple planets orbiting two suns — sometimes in configurations that challenge the basic rules of planetary formation.

The strangest of these worlds emerged in April, when a team reported the discovery of 2M1510 (AB) b, a planet orbiting two brown dwarfs, which are often called "failed stars" because they're not massive enough to ignite nuclear fusion.

Located about 120 light-years from Earth, the world orbits above and below the poles of its two stars, rather than along the usual flat plane.

The discovery team inferred the planet's presence using the Very Large Telescope in Chile, after detecting an unusual backward wobble in the brown dwarfs' orbits.

This was a gravitational clue that the researchers said could be explained only by a hidden, steeply inclined planet that was possibly knocked into place by a stellar flyby long ago.

Later in the year, a different team discovered three Earth-size planets orbiting the compact binary system TOI-2267, just 73 light-years from Earth.

Using data from TESS, the team found that all three worlds transit both stars, even though such tightly bound stellar pairs are thought to be gravitationally unstable environments for planet formation.

Adding to the haul, two independent teams identified HD 143811 (AB) b, a massive planet that had been hidden in archival data for years.

Captured by the Gemini Planet Imager on the Gemini South telescope in Chile, the world orbits a young twin-star system about 446 light-years from Earth.

Though it's roughly six times the size of Jupiter, the planet is only 13 million years old and still glows with heat left over from its formation.

The alien world's host stars whirl around each other every 18 days, while the planet itself traces a slow, 300-year orbit around both.

The contrast of a fast-dancing binary and a distant, lumbering giant poses a lingering mystery of how such a massive planet formed and survived in such a dynamically complex system.

The search for life on K2-18b

The exoplanet K2-18b arguably became one of 2025's loudest exoplanet flash points after renewed claims of possible life swiftly ignited scientific debate.

The world made headlines in April when a University of Cambridge-led team announced what it called its strongest evidence yet for potential biosignature gases in the planet's atmosphere.

Using new transit spectra from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the researchers argued that the data were consistent with dimethyl sulfide, and possibly dimethyl disulfide — gases that on Earth are strongly associated with marine biology.

The findings, the team argued, bolstered the case that the planet could support life on an ocean-covered world they described as potentially "teeming with life."

Within weeks, however, independent analyses challenged that interpretation.

One group showed that nonbiological gases, including propyne, could reproduce the same spectral features without invoking life, while another concluded that the JWST signal was too noisy or too weak to draw definitive conclusions.

The debate also drew attention to the limits of JWST, which was conceived before the discovery of exoplanets and is now being pushed to the edge of its capabilities to study one.

Still, researchers emphasize that K2-18b remains a high-value target for understanding sub-Neptunes, a class of planets absent from our solar system. Additional JWST transits already in hand may yet clarify what, if anything, the planet's atmosphere is truly revealing.

"If the ultimate result of this story is that the public is more circumspect about future claims of life detection, that's not a terrible thing," Eddie Schwieterman, an assistant professor of astrobiology at the University of California, Riverside, who was not involved with the research, told Space.com.

Dashed hopes for TRAPPIST-1e's habitability

New analyses of TRAPPIST-1e, one of seven Earth-size planets orbiting a cool red dwarf star about 40 light-years from Earth, suggest the planet may lack a substantial atmosphere, complicating hopes that it could support life-friendly liquid water.

Earlier JWS

T observations hinted at methane in the planet's atmosphere, raising the possibility of complex chemistry or even biological activity. Follow-up studies, however, indicated those signals were likely contaminated by the star itself.

Computer simulations showed that any methane on TRAPPIST-1e would be rapidly destroyed by intense ultraviolet radiation, surviving only about 200,000 years — not nearly long enough for geological processes to replenish it.

Variations in the signal from transit to transit further suggest that if an atmosphere exists at all, it remains extremely difficult to detect — a reminder that even the most promising worlds can defy easy answers.

A clearer look at Proxima Centauri

In 2025, astronomers sharpened their view of the planetary system around Proxima Centauri — the sun's closest stellar neighbor, which lies just 4.2 light-years away — thanks to a powerful new instrument designed to hunt worlds around small, cool stars.

The Near-Infrared Planet Searcher (NIRPS), a new high-resolution spectrograph installed at La Silla Observatory in Chile, delivered its first science results in July.

A team led by Alejandro Mascareño of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands in Spain confirmed the presence of Proxima b, an Earth-size planet known to orbit within the star's habitable zone, thereby validating the instrument's capabilities.

NIRPS also confirmed a smaller planet, Proxima d, and helped rule out a previously claimed third world, thus refining the census of the nearest planetary system.

The results also marked a technical milestone. For the first time, astronomers reached the precision needed to detect the faint gravitational pull of small, rocky planets around red dwarf stars, which emit most of their light at infrared wavelengths — making instruments like NIRPS valuable in the search for Earth-like planets beyond our solar system.

The tails of disintegrating worlds

This year, astronomers discovered rare exoplanets that orbit so close to their stars that they have long tails of material. These worlds are caught in a fleeting moment, in cosmic terms, before they disintegrate.

One such world, BD+05 4868 Ab, was spotted by TESS about 140 light-years from Earth, in the constellation Pegasus. The planet completes a full orbit every 30.5 hours, circling its star at a distance roughly 20 times closer than Mercury orbits the sun.

At such proximity, intense stellar heat vaporizes material from the planet's surface, which then streams into space, forming a blazing, comet-like tail. That tail is enormous, stretching up to 5.6 million miles (9 million kilometers), or about half the planet's orbit.

The discovery team estimates that the planet sheds the equivalent of a Mount Everest's worth of material every orbit and could completely disintegrate within 1 million to 2 million years.

The dust in the tail may contain material from the planet's crust, its mantle or even its core, which would give scientists a rare opportunity to study the internal composition of a distant world — something normally far beyond observational reach.

Another team used JWST to study a very different kind of planetary tail around the ultrahot Jupiter WASP-121b, also known as Tylos, located about 858 light-years from Earth.

Instead of shedding rock, the planet is losing its atmosphere. JWST revealed two enormous helium tails spanning nearly 60% of the planet's orbit — one trailing behind, pushed back by stellar radiation and wind, and a second, rarer leading tail curved ahead of the planet, likely drawn inward by the star's gravity.

A lava world that refuses to go bare

Astronomers using JWST found an atmosphere clinging to a planet that, by all conventional rules, should be completely airless.

The world, TOI-561b, is a small, scorching lava planet that orbits one of the oldest stars in the Milky Way so closely that its year lasts less than a single Earth day.

Tidally locked, with one side permanently facing its star, the planet reaches surface temperatures of more than 3,140 degrees Fahrenheit (about 1,726 degrees Celsius) — hot enough to melt rock — and is old enough that any primordial atmosphere should have escaped long ago.

Yet JWST observations suggest the planet's dayside is cooler than expected for a bare, airless rock, pointing to the presence of a substantial atmosphere that may have persisted for billions of years and is redistributing heat around the planet.

If confirmed, the finding would mark the strongest evidence yet for a long-lived atmosphere on a hot, rocky world that is neither massive nor temperate, challenging assumptions about the extreme conditions in which planetary atmospheres can survive.

The birth and death of an alien world

This year, astronomers observed two cosmic moments that bookend the life of a planet.

In one study, astronomers captured a never-before-seen view of a planet forming about 437 light-years from Earth.

The observations, taken with the Magellan Telescopes in Chile and the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona, show the alien world as a faint, purple dot embedded within a ring-shaped gap in a dusty disk around its star.

The forming world, WISPIT 2b, is just 5 million years old, yet it is already about five times as massive as Jupiter, and it's sitting within a clearing in the disk as it gathers dust and gas to grow.

Astronomers have long suspected that such gaps mark the presence of newborn planets, but this is the first time one has been directly observed actively carving out its orbit.

The team also identified a second candidate planet closer to the star, hinting that this system may be building multiple worlds at once.

Closer to Earth, another team captured a glimpse of a dead star's remains.

Observations of the white dwarf LSPM J0207+3331, the dense remnant of a long-gone massive star about 145 light-years from Earth, reveal the ongoing destruction of a planetary relic — possibly a body roughly 120 miles (193 km) wide — being torn apart by the star's intense gravity.

Using telescopes in Chile and Hawaii, astronomers detected heavy elements recently deposited on the white dwarf's surface, which they say is evidence that the debris was accreted within the past 35,000 years and may still be falling in today.

The findings suggest that gravitational forces that shift as the star decays can destabilize surviving planets and smaller bodies such as asteroids, thereby triggering collisions and sending fragments spiraling inward to their destruction.

Exclusive: 'A patriotic endeavor to push our space industry forward,' expert says Trump administration helps case for space stocks

December 25, 2025

Space stocks have experienced liftoff to end 2025 thanks to the potential for a SpaceX IPO in 2026 and an executive order signed by President Donald Trump to boost the sector.

A space investing expert tells Benzinga a potential renewed "space race" and defense ambitions could be good for the space sector.

Trump Administration Impact on Space Stocks

The recent executive order from Trump and the appointment of Jared Isaacman to lead NASA are steps that could lead to strong interest in space stocks in 2026.

Procure Holdings CEO Andrew Chanin told Benzinga that having certain people in certain positions can help "pull different levers" that can drive things further in one direction.

The Procure Space ETF UFO is an ETF that could benefit from those levers being pulled.

Chanin highlighted the Artemis program, NASA's effort to get humans back to the Moon, which will be a key item for Isaacman.

The billionaire, who has downplayed what he calls a business relationship with SpaceX and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, is also tasked with listening to Musk say that Mars is a better opportunity than the Moon and should be the space exploration focus.

Focus on Defense, New Space Race

Chanin said more attention could come for the space sector thanks to a focus on defense and a potential space race against other countries.

"I think space has been kind of recognized globally as the new military high ground," Chanin said.

The space expert says the United States is now placing a greater emphasis on "defense national security," which could impact investments and incentives for the space sector.

Chanin said countries like China, Russia and India are not slowing down when it comes to space and the United States could look to make sure it is focused on being a "leader in the space race."

"China and Russia and India and others compete for space because they see an opportunity and no one wants to get left behind there."

The Procure Holdings CEO said the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has shown how important space is to international relations.

"It is a national security. It's a national defense. It's secure communications. It's having access to your communications when you need them."

Chanin said the United States could continue to increase its spending and focus on space going forward based on what other countries are doing.

"I know our adversaries will not slow down regardless of what we decide to do."

Chanin said the "winners of this next decade" could come from the space sector.

"I think it's a patriotic endeavor to push our space industry forward further."

‘Scrapped’ Tanker Rises From the Dead: Inside Venezuela’s Expanding Zombie Fleet

Bloomberg December 26, 2025

By Weilun Soon (Bloomberg) — A 27-year-old crude tanker that was supposedly scrapped in 2021 is due to reach Venezuela late this week, according to ship-tracking data, in the latest example of how the South American country keeps its embattled oil industry alive.

The tanker identifying itself as Freesia I is likely to be a zombie vessel, meaning it is in fact another tanker assuming the identity of a dismantled ship. This tactic is occasionally employed by boats ferrying sanctioned oil to obscure their trajectories and cargoes.

Venezuela’s oil industry, once a global powerhouse, has been decimated by years of sanctions and underinvestment. But it has continued to export, mostly to China, thanks to some of the oldest and murkiest tankers in the global fleet — a maritime lifeline for the economy and for the government of President Nicolás Maduro.

In the year to date, Caracas shipped nearly 900,000 barrels per day, according to analytics firm Kpler. That’s a fraction of what it once sold, but enough to irk the Trump administration into some of the most forceful sanctions enforcement to date.

“Venezuela has been remarkably effective at masking both origin and ownership of crude and therefore at evading financial and trade-related controls,” said Dimitris Ampatzidis, senior risk and compliance analyst at Kpler. “That’s why Washington has increasingly moved from purely financial measures to physical disruption.”

US forces have struck alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean and since early December have chased or boarded three tankers in waters near Venezuela, including one non-sanctioned vessel — a significant escalation. Washington says the campaign is meant to deter illicit activity and to signal that the US wants Maduro out of power. President Donald Trump has also said the US would keep any seized crude.

“While the US has sanctioned numerous vessels and organizations, it hasn’t stemmed the flow. Physical boarding is the next step,” said Mark Douglas, a maritime domain analyst at Starboard Maritime Intelligence. “It’s a signal that falsifying locations and documentation is no longer a shield. It’s now what makes you a target.”

So far, the tanker seizures have done little to spook oil traders about a disruption to supplies as the market braces for a global glut. US oil prices have been little changed in thin trading since tensions escalated about two weeks ago.

Out of a dark fleet of roughly 1,500 vessels — often old, usually uninsured and owned by shell companies — Venezuela relies on close to 400 ships, according to TankerTrackers.com.

The tankers indulge in most of the dark fleet’s typical practices to obscure movements and ownership, including spoofing, or the use of fake locations. As with Freesia I, they also occasionally assume the identity of other, often dismantled, ships.

The vessel identifying as Freesia I was at Venezuela’s José oil-export terminal in early May. It began its most recent trip in Southeast Asia in November, signaling it would arrive at the South American country’s Amuay port on Dec. 26, likely to receive a new cargo. It later switched the destination to “High Sea”, before turning off its transponder altogether on Tuesday, off French Guiana.

Spoofing is also common. The Skipper, the first Venezuela tanker to be targeted by US forces, was using this tactic when it was captured earlier this month. The 20-year-old tanker indicated through tracking systems, starting in late October, that it was idling off Guyana. Instead, satellite images captured on Nov. 14 and reviewed by Bloomberg News showed Skipper, with red tips on either side of its deck, docked at the port of José.

That suggests the ship had been manipulating its signals, and only on the day of the US seizure did Skipper reveal its true location.

At the time of seizure, Skipper said it was sailing under Guyana’s flag, but that has since been disputed by the South American country. Ships of all types need to be registered with a certain country’s flag registry, which in turn enforces safety and crew-welfare standards on board those ships. Many in the dark fleet turn to flags of convenience or false registrations to avoid inspection.

Venezuela’s regular dark fleet tankers are typically provided by other countries, as Caracas is unable to finance its own flotilla, and cannot rely on an existing fleet that is too small and old.

China Has Turned a Small Container Feeder Into an Arsenal Ship

Published Dec 25, 2025 10:26 PM by The Maritime Executive

The U.S. Navy wants to compete with China's PLA Navy for sea control in the Western Pacific, which would be essential to defending U.S. allies and protecting American economic interests in the region. But year on year, China's naval fleet continues to grow and modernize, adding more (and more credible) combatant vessels to the order of battle. On Thursday, new open-source imagery from downtown Shanghai showed that the contest could get harder: the photos show that the People's Liberation Army has outfitted a standard container feeder with most of the trappings of a frigate, with an abundance of missile capacity.

The vessel in question, Zhong Da 79, is a Chinese-flagged container feeder of about 320 feet in length. She has no IMO number or Equasis record, consistent with a purely domestic vessel. AIS data from Pole Star Global shows that she only engages in coastwise trade along China's eastern and southern seaboard.

Zhong Da 79's trackline suggests that the vessel has spent months undergoing a refit over the past year. She put into a small regional shipyard in Longhai in mid-April, emerging again in mid-August. Ever since, she has been moored alongside an industrial pier on the Huangpu River near downtown Shanghai.

A coastal vessel of such a small size hardly registers in most assessments of national maritime strength. Nonetheless, Zhong Da 79 appears to be large enough to host 60 full size containerized missile cells, an air defense radar, a close-in weapons system, and potentially more equipment in other containers on deck. Measured purely by missile capacity, this is nearly twice the firepower planned for the U.S. Navy's Constellation-class frigate, which was recently canceled due to delays and cost overruns.

Zhong Da 79 lacks the speed, shock hardening and compartmentalization of a real frigate, and would be vulnerable if unescorted. The challenge is in China's vast potential for making many more, and cheaply. China's flag (including Hong Kong) covers nearly 8,000 vessels, and Chinese beneficial owners hold another 4,400 ships under other nations' registries. China's industrial base is well-equipped to deliver the military hardware and shipyard man-hours to conduct conversions or deliver additional newbuild units. At minimum, in a high-end fight, a boxship/arsenal ship would complicate planning and absorb scarce precision munitions. At maximum, such a vessel class could deliver effective antiaircraft or antiship missile fire, hide amongst civilian vessel traffic, and be replaced rapidly if lost.

Putin wishes Trump merry Christmas – Kremlin

26 Dec, 2025 00:45

Russian President Vladimir Putin has wished merry Christmas to his US counterpart, Donald Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has revealed.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Peskov said that Putin had already sent a telegram with greetings to Trump, adding that “there is no indication that a phone conversation between the two leaders is planned for today.”

Under the Trump administration, relations between Russia and the US have been notably warmer than during the tenure of former President Joe Biden.

Putin and Trump have been engaged in active talks over settling the Ukraine conflict and reinvigorating bilateral relations, holding a high-stakes summit in Alaska in August aimed at ending hostilities between Moscow and Kiev, though the talks failed to produce a breakthrough.

In June, Putin also called Trump on his 79th birthday, with the two discussing Iran and the Middle East during a 50-minute conversation. The leaders also held a phone call on October 16, during which Putin congratulated Trump on helping mediate the peace agreement in Gaza.

Last year, several weeks before Trump’s inauguration, Putin refrained from sending any Christmas greeting to most Western leaders as well as the US President, explaining that America has positioned as an “unfriendly” country towards Russia.

Gaza, Nord Stream and Kiev’s golden toilets: Top stories of 2025 the West wants you to forget

24 Dec, 2025 19:27

2025 has yielded some extraordinary own goals that have exposed the posturing of Western politicians and left the EU isolated, irrelevant, and alone, pursuing policies contrary to self-interest.

Unwelcome stories often cling to reality, like an alien to John Hurt’s face. And just as the notorious species did to humans, so too could these unwelcome stories eventually impregnate, and burst from the belly of the narrative beast.

Nord Stream and the Polish-German standoff over Ukrainians nobody wants to interrogate

New Europe bullhorn Poland is trying to shut down any investigation into the greatest destruction of national infrastructure on the European continent since WW2. Germany – a victim of the Nord Stream blasts celebrated by Polish Foreign Minister ‘Osama bin’ Sikorski – is seeking extraditions.

Warsaw has refused to investigate or extradite any of the alleged Ukrainian divers who supposedly rented a little yacht and went off to blow up giant undersea pipelines at 250 feet, and who have been fingered by Berlin.

Italy, on the other hand, has extradited a Ukrainian military officer to Germany. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk (a former president of the European Council) has insisted, however, that “the case is closed.”

“Who blew up Nord Stream?” is a question nobody in the West wants answered.

NATO-Israeli arms corruption scandal

Who would have thought that there’s a cozy consulting gray-area where former NATO staff float into weapons sales jobs whose primary client is… NATO?

And amid the destruction of Gaza and an unprecedented militarization drive across the EU, where billions are suddenly up for grabs and everyone is seeing ‘drones’?

Thirteen contracts with Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit have been canceled, five arrests have been made, including a former Dutch Ministry of Defense staffer, and one suspect is on the run over revelations of a massive bribery scheme involving bloc officials.

NATO procurement boss Stacey Cummings – a former career member of the US Department of War’s Senior Executive Service – has ordered that nobody in the military bloc’s buying agency speak to the press.

The EU’s toxic reputation as a haven for military and political lobbyists happy to do business with Israel is about to get a major boost.

Where is the West on genocide and Gaza?

EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas has never used the term “genocide” to refer to Isreal’s military destruction of the Palestinian people in Gaza, while professing to hold the highest moral and ethical standards.

The unfortunate Kallas is widely seen outside the Brussels bubble – and possibly inside – as a liability. Not a story the Western press sees as important, given the bloc’s slide to the far right and its turn to a war economy to save itself.

Plane wrong

Kallas’ boss, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has landed herself in trouble literally and metaphorically in 2025.

Claims that her rented private jet’s signal was jammed by Russia while she headed a press junket/defense review of her bloc’s ‘eastern flank’ have been laughed at and debunked.

A Bulgarian inquiry into the incident has been shelved, while no inquiry into the FT’s initial reporting of the story ever took off.

Von der Leyen has carried her disastrous form from the German Defense Ministry into Brussels and shown a strong penchant for losing private messages through which she struck a multibillion-euro deal for vaccines from Pfizer – resulting in censure by the European Court of Justice.

Pain in the assets

How and why von der Leyen and her compatriot and fellow German 1-percenter, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, managed to push a dangerous plot to steal Russia’s assets, give them to Ukraine, and let Belgium carry the can, to a midnight denouement only resolved by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will be a story you will not read anywhere in the Western press.

Nor the role played by Kaja Kallas and her functionaries in supporting the German push. That the €90 billion ($105 billion) they claimed they raised for Ukraine is money down the drain that will eventually be paid for by European taxpayers is also a story the West would rather not have to read.

Droning on

Von der Leyen and Kallas, as well as the Western media, were also happy to fan the drone hysteria that gripped northern Europe – a kind of religious mass-event for which there is a precedent in Belgium.

An investigation by Dutch magazine Trouw found that of 61 reported drone sightings in Belgium, Denmark, and elsewhere, only three were not debunked.

The CEO of Copenhagen airport has also since confirmed that any drones spotted near the facility were peaceful. You’re not going to read that anywhere in the Western press.

Corruption in Ukraine

The four-year-long refusal by the Western media to acknowledge the obvious about Ukraine’s endemic and rampant culture of corruption has almost come to an end.

An image of a gold toilet allegedly installed in the apartment of Vladimir Zelensky’s fugitive friend Timur Mindich – who fled to Israel before agents could arrest him – has galvanized public anger in Ukraine and beyond.

The revelations that Zelensky’s inner circle took part in a €100 million graft scheme connected to the energy sector were reasonably widely reported, but will be conveniently disconnected from the idea that EU taxpayers will effectively hand over €90 billion more to Zelensky’s cronies to keep Kiev’s frontline fighting, as well as lining pockets.

That the revelations of rampant corruption by Zelensky’s inner circle – authored by an anti-corruption unit he had tried and failed to take control of – weakened him and emboldened Washington to push more for peace is also not a story the Western media is very happy to report, however obvious it is.

PEACE HOPE Zelensky poised to fly to Mar-a-Lago for crunch talks with Trump as Putin blitzes Ukraine with huge drone strike

Updated: 10:04, 26 Dec 2025

VOLODYMYR Zelensky is preparing to fly to Florida for high-stakes peace talks with President Trump as Vladimir Putin unleashed a massive new drone assault on Ukraine that forced Nato to scramble fighter jets.

The Ukrainian president is expected at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate on Sunday for a crunch summit aimed at hammering out the details of a 20-point plan to end the war with Russia.

Zelensky confirmed the meeting is imminent, writing on X: “We are not losing a single day.

“We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level – with President Trump – in the near future. A lot can be decided before the New Year.

“This meeting is specifically for the purpose of finalising everything as much as we can.”

The talks will focus on unresolved flashpoints, including control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and how territory would be divided after any ceasefire.

Kyiv’s revised peace plan, unveiled earlier this week, softens some of Ukraine’s previous red lines on territory.

While more favourable to Kyiv than a controversial 28-point draft drawn up by US envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, it still contains major concessions.

Zelensky said the revised 20-point peace plan, made public on Wednesday after recent US-Ukraine talks in Miami, was “about 90% ready”, with territory and security guarantees set to dominate talks with Trump.

He said Kyiv “would like the Europeans to be involved”, but doubted it could happen at short notice.

The Kremlin confirmed it has received the updated proposals.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “We are examining this material and, depending on the decisions made by the head of state, we will continue our communication with the Americans.”

Putin has also instructed his foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov to open direct contacts with Washington after Moscow received U.S. proposals on a possible Ukrainian peace deal, the Kremlin said on Friday.

“It was agreed with the U.S. to continue dialogue,” Peskov told reporters, indicating that back-channel talks are now running in parallel with preparations for the Trump–Zelensky summit.

But Vlad has privately cast doubt on the framework.

Speaking behind closed doors to senior businessmen, he reiterated Russia’s claim to the whole of the Donbas, according to Kommersant.

Kremlin correspondent Andrei Kolesnikov wrote that Putin was open only to limited swaps, adding: “In other words, that ‘Donbas is ours’.”

Putin also said Russia was discussing joint management of the Zaporizhzhia plant with the US, excluding Ukraine, despite Zelensky saying Washington had floated a three-way split.

The Russian tyrant reportedly claimed the US was interested in using the plant’s electricity for cryptocurrency mining.

Mr Kolesnikov added: “He also said that the Americans had stepped back from some of their own proposals as a result of talks with the Europeans. And that this was a weakness.”

Moscow is expected to push for tougher limits on Ukraine’s military, guarantees against Nato expansion and clarity on sanctions relief and frozen Russian assets.

The diplomatic push comes as Russia intensifies attacks on the ground.

Overnight, Russian drones struck port and energy infrastructure in Odesa and the Danube region, just yards from Nato member Romania.

Huge flames were seen at a power facility in Izmail, prompting Romania to scramble two F-16 fighter jets.

An official statement said: “The air surveillance system of the Ministry of National Defence identified groups of drones launched by the Russian Federation towards the Ukrainian ports on the Danube.”

The jets flew for more than two hours as residents in Tulcea County were placed on alert.

Romania said no airspace violations were recorded, despite drone debris landing on its territory 34 times since the war began.

Odesa military chief Serhii Lysak said: “Today the enemy attacked our city again. Damage to an infrastructure facility in Odesa was recorded. A fire broke out as a result of a UAV hit. Work is underway to eliminate the consequences.”

There were no fatalities, but Ukraine said Slovakia-, Palau- and Liberia-flagged vessels were damaged in Odesa and Mykolaiv ports. Slovakia is a Nato state.

At least three people were killed and 13 injured in Russian attacks over Christmas in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Donetsk.

Moscow said it had downed seven British-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles over the past week, according to the Russian defence ministry.

Ukraine, meanwhile, said it had used Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil refinery in the Rostov region on Thursday, part of a campaign to choke off Moscow’s export revenues.

Russian officials said a firefighter was wounded tackling the blaze.

On the ground, Russian forces were reported to have taken control of the settlement of Kosivstseve in the Zaporizhzhia region, as Moscow presses its advantage in parts of eastern Ukraine despite the parallel diplomatic track.

In first, IAF helicopter gunship downs two arms smuggling drones from Egypt

25 December 2025, 11:04 pm

In a first, an Israeli Air Force helicopter gunship intercepted two drones during a smuggling attempt from Egypt into Israeli airspace on Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said, releasing footage of the incident.

According to the military, IDF surveillance units and the air force’s aerial control center identified two drones crossing “from the west” toward Israeli territory.

The aircraft was dispatched in coordination with the 80th “Edom” Division and shot down the drones as they entered Israeli airspace.

A senior air force official said the interception reflects a broader shift in Israel’s border-defense approach amid a surge in the use of drones to smuggle weapons across the border.

“As part of a deep change in our border-defense doctrine, the air force has established control centers operating under the regional divisions, significantly improving detection capabilities and the direction of forces against low-altitude aerial threats,” the official said.

The official added that the interception marks the first operation of its kind.

“We continue to enhance cooperation and operational capabilities to thwart infiltrations along the border,” the official said.

The IDF also said it was investigating a fatal shooting that occurred overnight Wednesday-Thursday during a suspected smuggling incident in the Nitzana area along the Egyptian border.

Haaretz reported that the man killed was a Bedouin civilian from the village of Bir Hadaj.

According to an initial IDF probe, a soldier and a civilian, who were traveling in a civilian vehicle, were involved in the shooting after completing a planned operation.

It is unclear if and to what extent the civilian was involved in IDF operations.

While outside the designated operational military area, the two identified several masked suspects allegedly engaged in smuggling.

The civilian then opened fire at the suspects’ vehicle tires using both his personal weapon and the soldier’s firearm, causing the vehicle to veer off course.

One of the suspects was wounded in the incident and later died after being evacuated to a hospital, the military said. Haaretz identified him as Ayoub Mohammed Tohi, a Bedouin man in his 20s.

Another man who was with him was arrested, and the Beersheba Magistrate’s Court has extended his detention until Sunday on suspicion of involvement in smuggling, according to court proceedings cited by Haaretz.

Lawyers for the detained suspect told the newspaper that their client denies any involvement in smuggling and claims he and the driver did not realize they were being ordered to stop, saying the vehicle from which shots were fired was civilian and that its occupants were dressed in civilian clothing.

Relatives of the deceased said family members were prevented from approaching the scene after the shooting and that the vehicle involved was towed away and not returned.

The IDF said the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the soldier and the civilian are under review. The incident is being investigated by a joint team from the Military Police and the Israel Police.

Nine Children Injured In Drone Strike On Madrassa In Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Updated on: 26 December 2025 4:45 pm

- Nine students injured, three critically, in drone strike on madrassa in North Waziristan.

- Pakistan Army denies involvement; locals blame Afghan Taliban drones in retaliation.

- Incident further strains Pakistan-Afghanistan relations amid ongoing cross-border militancy and accusations.

At least nine children were injured, three of them critically, when a drone strike targeted a madrassa (religious seminary) in Pakistan’s North Waziristan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the night of December 25, 2025.

The attack occurred in the Mir Ali tehsil area, a long-standing hotspot of militancy and cross-border tensions.

According to local hospital officials and eyewitnesses, the drone fired at least two missiles into the seminary compound around 11:30 pm, causing a powerful explosion that partially collapsed a building where students were sleeping.

The injured children, aged between 8 and 14, were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Mir Ali and later referred to a larger facility in Bannu. Doctors described multiple shrapnel wounds, burns and fractures; three are on ventilators.

Pakistan military spokesperson Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry categorically denied any involvement by Pakistani forces, stating:

“No Pakistan Army or security forces drone operation was conducted in the area last night. We are investigating the incident and will respond appropriately.”

He suggested the strike could have originated from across the Afghan border.

Local tribal elders and residents, however, accused Afghan Taliban forces of launching the attack, claiming it was retaliation for recent Pakistani military operations against Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts near the Durand Line.

The TTP, which has been intensifying attacks inside Pakistan, issued a statement vowing “severe revenge” if the strike was confirmed to be Afghan-origin.

The incident has sharply escalated tensions between Islamabad and Kabul, already strained by frequent cross-border shelling, drone strikes and accusations of harbouring militants.

Pakistan has repeatedly claimed that TTP fighters operate from safe havens inside Afghanistan, while Kabul alleges Pakistan shelters anti-Taliban groups.

Civil society groups in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa condemned the attack on a religious school, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law.

Protests erupted in Mir Ali and Peshawar on December 26, with demonstrators burning effigies and demanding accountability

Drone bomb hits building in Kwara hours after US airstrikes on terrorists in Nigeria

December 26, 2025

- Drone bomb incident destroys a building in Offa, Kwara State, hours after US airstrikes on terrorists in Nigeria’s North West.

- Residents report explosion, video shows debris believed to be drone bomb remnants at the scene.

- FG confirms Nigeria–US security cooperation, but says Offa incident is yet to be officially verified.

A building was destroyed in Offa, Kwara State, after a reported drone bomb incident that occurred hours after the United States announced airstrikes on ISIS-linked terrorists in Nigeria’s North West.

A video shared widely on social media showed the damaged structure, with residents filming debris they claimed were remnants of a drone bomb. Eyewitnesses said a loud explosion was heard moments before the building was hit.

The development followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump that American forces had carried out airstrikes targeting ISIS terrorists in Sokoto State.

However, as of the time of filing this report, Nigerian authorities had not confirmed whether the Offa incident was a separate attack or linked to debris from the earlier strikes in the North West.

Earlier on Friday, the Federal Government confirmed ongoing security and intelligence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

In a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government said the partnership had led to “precision airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria’s North West.”

The US military action followed weeks of warnings by President Trump, who had urged Nigeria to take stronger measures against terrorism, particularly attacks on Christian communities, or risk unilateral intervention. He also redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

While the Federal Government has dismissed claims of an ongoing genocide against Christians, it confirmed that high-level security engagements have been held with US officials to address the issues raised.

Europe’s nuclear sites on high alert for drone threats in the year ahead

December 25, 2025

It was a taste of what could become one of the decisive threats next year, when the flight path between Dublin and Britain’s Sellafield nuclear reactor was disrupted by unidentified drones.

On the incoming jet was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife, minutes away from landing at Dublin Airport, slightly ahead of schedule.

After an Irish naval vessel reported that a number of drones were manoeuvring 36km north-east of the city – Sellafield is just 200km from the capital – Ireland’s Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said it was a “co-ordinated threat” to “put pressure” on Europe and Ukraine.

Just days later, the menace shifted. The French Navy opened fire on drones detected over a highly sensitive site housing the country’s fleet of nuclear submarines.

The drones at Ile Longue naval base were ultimately intercepted with jamming systems, but their presence over one of the continent’s most heavily protected sites sent a clear message:

Europe is waking up to significant vulnerabilities to its military and civilian nuclear sites, and Russia is widely suspected to be behind the activity.

Nuclear threat

France has 19 nuclear power stations, Britain has five − including Sellafield, in Cumbria, north-west England − and many more are spread across the continent.

Defence analysts have warned that a hostile state could target a vulnerable power station rather than resorting to the outright belligerence of launching a nuclear weapon.

Causing a nuclear incident with several drone strikes would be difficult, but even a limited attack could cause symbolic and economic damage.

Fallout could include enforced shutdowns, mass evacuations and financial market panic, all without a state crossing the nuclear threshold.

“What if Russia just blows up one of the nuclear power plants in the UK using drones that are flown from within the UK?” said Ed Arnold, a senior military analyst at the Royal United Services Institute think tank.

“That’s a different vector of threat, but it would achieve the same result from a Russian perspective.”

He added that the sites’ “vulnerabilities are really quite critical, because this is hard to defend against,” and that even just flying drones over sensitive sites “is cheap, deniable and has a high economic impact”.

Ukraine, on one level, is responsible for tactics that were previously the stuff of imagination. Its remarkably successful Operation Spider-Web in June demonstrated the changed boundaries of warfare.

The operation used more than 100 short-range kamikaze drones launched from lorries parked within 10km of several Russian airbases, destroying 11 Russian long-range bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

“Although it was a costly lesson, it likely opened Moscow’s eyes to the opportunities afforded by these capabilities,” wrote Dr Daniel Salisbury in an International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank paper on the growing threat.

“Even minimal capability can use emerging technologies to hold nuclear assets at risk,” he added.

A year ago, the idea of a head of state being targeted for assassination by drones seemed like a plot from a Tom Clancy novel. Not any more. Presidential security details now carry drone jammers that resemble oversized guns.

But it is not just the French and Irish incidents that are setting off a wave of concern over Europe. Last month, drones were spotted over Kleine-Brogel Air Base in Belgium on three consecutive nights.

New modes

In the Netherlands, guards fired at drones over Volkel Air Base, which hosts US nuclear weapons under Nato’s nuclear-sharing arrangements. Earlier this month, Dutch F-35 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a drone.

Similar incidents have been reported around RAF Lakenheath in eastern England, which is likely to soon host US nuclear weapons after a two decade absence.

What is troubling the authorities is that the flights are clustered around high-value nuclear and military sites, with drones larger and more capable than those usually used by hobbyists.

“These are not people flying toys,” said Belgium’s Defence Minister, Theo Francken, after the Kleine-Brogel incursion. “They came to spy, to see where the F-16s are, where the ammunition is and other highly strategic information.”

Furthermore, some of the UAVs flew higher and proved resistant to jamming.

This adds to a series of incidents since September in which drones flew over civilian airports across Eastern Europe, as well as Germany and Scandinavia.

The flights, likely conducted by criminal gangs and paid for in cryptocurrency by Moscow, could well be construed as “hostile reconnaissance” to look into sites or indeed test their anti-drone technology for a future conflict.

Drones can also gather real-time imagery that satellites cannot and if one could capture either a French nuclear-armed submarines leaving Ile Longue or a Royal Navy one departing Faslane in Scotland it would give enemies a significant tracking advantage.

Drones everywhere

Hostile states can also use the rapidly expanding civilian drone market to blend into the noise to hide their true intentions.

In Britain it is estimated that by 2030 there could be 76,000 commercial drones operating in its airspace, according to The Economist.

And across Europe, more than 3,800 close encounters between drones and aircraft were recorded last year − more than double the previous year.

Drones, Mr Arnold argued, are perfectly suited to “grey zone” operations, those activities that fall short of open warfare but inflict disruption and apprehension.

Annabelle Walker, an analyst at the intelligence company Sibylline, also suggested that Russia has a strong interest in probing Nato’s readiness.

“The use of drones has exposed a particular gap in European countries,” she said. “Testing response times, decision-making and co-ordination tells you a lot and it can all be done below the threshold of war.”

Shoot 'em down?

Shooting down drones risks collateral damage. Main defences include jamming or “spoofing”, in which drones are tricked into misidentifying their location.

Jamming is less effective against autonomous drones programmed to strike or that are using fibre-optic control − as seen widely in the Ukraine-Russia war.

Defenders can use physical countermeasures such as guns that shoot nets, and shotguns, which are broadly carried in Ukraine.

The National understands that Kyiv is set to unveil next year a state-of-the art interceptor drone. The counter-drone industry is now becoming a major market for defence companies.

To defend against a serious attack on a nuclear site, governments must identify vulnerable locations then use a layered defence of radar, electronic warfare and trained personnel dedicated to counter-drone operations, said Douglas Barrie of the IISS.

But air defence was an area where European states had underinvested for decades since the Cold War ended. “Western Europe and the UK really need to pay more attention as this is back on the agenda in a big way,” Mr Barrie told The National.

“Moscow is clearly in the frame, and they’re testing the boundaries of what they can get away with before the other side pushes back,” he added.

Mr Zelenskyy’s near-miss over Dublin was not necessarily an act of war but it was a warning − as were the other incidents − and Moscow may well consider further disruptive operations that avoid open conflict.

It is now a question of whether Europe can strengthen its defences against a threat that will only intensify.

The $16 Billion Question Haunting Mark Zuckerberg

A new study finds Facebook hosts the vast majority of social media scams, and critics argue it is because Meta prioritizes profit over protecting users, according to the New York Post.

Internal documents obtained by Reuters show Meta projected $16 billion — about 10% of revenue — from scam ads last year. Experts say the company only bans advertisers when its systems detect a 95% probability of fraud, while charging higher ad fees to suspicious buyers, a system critics describe as “pay to play.”

Former California prosecutor Erin West says the documents prove fraud is a “major moneymaker” for Meta. “To know that Facebook is aware of this and they tolerate it — and in fact, they even command additional fees from the worst offenders — is egregious… the practice itself is outrageous, jaw-dropping, unacceptable.”

Data from fraud-reporting firm SafelyHQ shows Facebook is cited in 85% of scam reports that identify a platform, with more than 50,000 verified complaints collected so far. CEO Patrick Quade says the problem is far larger: “For 50,000 people to find us and independently document their losses implies a victim count in the tens of millions… This isn’t ‘cherry-picking’ — it is the overflow of a systemic failure that Meta’s own documents confirm.”

One victim, Brian Kuhn, lost $70 buying records from a fake Facebook sale. “It felt a little creepy that they seemed to know my taste so well… I somehow blame myself equally, but that doesn’t excuse Facebook from allowing the thieves to prey on people.”

The Post writes that lawmakers Josh Hawley and Richard Blumenthal have demanded a federal investigation, writing: “Perversely, Meta reportedly charges higher rates for ads that it suspects might be fraudulent — in effect, imposing a scam tax…”

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone denies the claims, saying: “We aggressively fight fraud and scams… Scammers are persistent criminals…”

Yet internal Meta reports from 2025 found the company was involved in one-third of successful U.S. scams and that it was “easier to advertise scams on Meta platforms than Google.”

Another victim, Betty, who bought counterfeit cosmetics from a Facebook ad, described the platform’s targeting: “You like one thing or look at something or you make a comment about one thing and then these ads appear… Some are really good — they’re fake, but you really can’t tell at first.”

Quade warns that “the ‘fox’ isn’t even guarding the henhouse — it’s charging a toll for other foxes to walk right in… Meta’s system is algorithmically trapping regular citizens in e-commerce scams…”

Consumer Reports and policy experts argue Meta’s protection under Section 230 must be narrowed, especially for paid ads. As Quade concludes, “You can’t let the company profiting from the crime be the one in charge of stopping it.”

A Striking Number of Children and Relatives of Democrat Politicians Are Running for Office

All in the family: In 2026, a surge of politicians’ kids are running for office

Dozens of members are nearing the end of their congressional careers and hanging up their voting cards.

But for some, their family’s political legacies will continue, as their kids and relatives run for office in 2026.

In the crowded Maine governor’s race alone, there are three contenders who are political scions: Democrat Angus King III, the son of independent Sen. Angus King; Democrat Hannah Pingree, the daughter of Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine; and Republican Jonathan Bush, the nephew and cousin of the two Bush presidents.

While the trend is hardly new, this campaign cycle already features a number of notable races involving candidates who are related to former or current politicians.

In New Hampshire, retiring Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s daughter, Stefany Shaheen, has launched a bid for an open House seat. Across the country, former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s daughter, Christine Pelosi, is running for a state Senate seat in California. And in Georgia, the son of former GOP Rep. Jack Kingston, Jim Kingston, is running for his dad’s old House seat.

Chellie Pingree said it has been both “heart-warming and terrifying” to watch her daughter, a former speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, enter the political arena. But she also said it’s only “natural” to see the next generation of public servants following in some of their parents’ footsteps.

China Sanctions 20 US Defense Firms, Issues 'Red Line' Warning Over Record Taiwan Arms Deal

by Tyler Durden Friday, Dec 26, 2025 - 08:25 AM

After sounding the constant warning that Washington is "playing with fire" in continually arming and supporting self-ruled Taiwan, China's foreign ministry announced Friday new sanctions on ten individuals and 20 American defense companies, mostly notably among them Boeing, specifically in response to American arms sales to Taiwan.

The ministry described that the sanctions freeze any assets that the listed people and firms hold in China and prohibit Chinese organizations and citizens from conducting business with them, and singled out Boeing's St. Louis-based defense branch, Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation and L3Harris Maritime Services - among others.

Also on the list is Palmer Luckey, the founder of defense firm Anduril Industries. The sanctioned executives are barred from traveling to mainland China, as well as Hong Kong and Macau.

"In response to the latest US announcement of large-scale arms sales to China’s Taiwan region, China has decided to take countermeasures in accordance with the anti-foreign sanctions law against 20 US defense-related companies and 10 senior executives who have engaged in arming Taiwan in recent years," stated the Chinese foreign ministry.

"Anyone who attempts to cross the line and make provocations on the Taiwan question will be met with China’s firm response… No country or force shall ever underestimate the resolve, will, and ability of the Chinese government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," it added.

The ministry described that "movable and immovable properties, and other kinds of assets" of these American firms and individuals within China "shall be frozen."

The punitive measure follows the Trump administration's provocative announcement last week of an $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan, which is record-setting, confirmed as the largest such US sale to the island to date.

Beijing has said "The Taiwan issue lies at the heart of China’s core interests and represents the first red line in China-U.S. relations that must not be crossed," according to a foreign ministry spokesperson.

The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the major arms sales are intended to support Taipei's efforts to "modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability."

The biggest chunks of the package include some $4 billion of Himars truck-based missile launchers, enough for 82 of the advanced systems.

The Himars have enough range to be able to reach targets on China's east coast, which introduces a new level of 'deterrence' from Taipei's and Washington's perspectives.

Last week, soon on the heels of this, Beijing issued a blistering statement saying, "The 'Taiwan independence' forces on the island seek independence through force and resist reunification through force, squandering the hard-earned money of the people to purchase weapons at the cost of turning Taiwan into a powder keg."

That prior statement had added, "This cannot save the doomed fate of 'Taiwan independence' but will only accelerate the push of the Taiwan Strait toward a dangerous situation of military confrontation and war. The U.S. support for 'Taiwan Independence' through arms will only end up backfiring. Using Taiwan to contain China will not succeed."

Jimmy Kimmel Attacks Trump, Warns of ‘Tyranny Booming’ in Christmas Address on UK TV: ‘We Won, the President Lost’

by Simon Kent 26 Dec 2025

A comfortably smug Jimmy Kimmel sent a personal message to UK television viewers saying “tyranny is booming over here” when he delivered a fireside chat across the pond on Christmas Day.

The left-wing, late-night host was chosen to give an “alternative Christmas message” on Channel 4 to counter the British monarch’s much-viewed annual televised address, as Breitbart News reported.

The channel began a tradition of airing an alternative Christmas message in 1993. Channel 4 said the message is often a thought-provoking and personal reflection pertinent to the events of the year.

Kimmel was chosen after the presenter’s ABC talk show was yanked off air in September after he made despicable comments about slain conservative icon and free speech martyr Charlie Kirk.

He also poked fun at President Donald Trump comments about White House ballroom renovations after being asked about Kirk’s murder.

“You may have read in your colorful newspapers my country’s president would like to shut me up because I don’t adore him in the way he likes to be adored,” he said, per the Los Angeles Times.

He attributed the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live! to the “millions and millions of people” he claims fought to get him back on the air in the name of free speech.

Kimmel offered his UK audience no evidence to support the claim of “millions and millions of people” stood with him.

“And because so many people spoke out, we came back. Our show came back stronger than ever. We won, the president lost, and now I’m back on the air every night giving the most powerful politician on Earth a right, and richly deserved, bollocking,” he said in a nod to the British slang for scolding.

Elsewhere during his address, Kimmel called the president “King Donny the 8th.” “We don’t have a problem with your king, just the guy who thinks he’s our king,” he said, apologizing for the state of America and its democratic institutions.

“Don’t give up on us,” Kimmel said. “We’re going through a bit of a wobble right now, but we’ll come around.”

As Breitbart News reported, the late-night host had falsely suggested on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Kirk’s assassin may have been part of the “MAGA gang,” and mocked Trump’s response, which included ordering American flags flown at half-staff.

ABC, Disney, and affiliates responded by briefly pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live! from all of their stations, with broadcast affiliate Nexstar citing Kimmel’s “offensive and insensitive” comments “at a critical time in our national political discourse,” and stressing the company’s desire to “move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue.”

After returning to the air, Kimmel was slammed for his non-apology monologue addressing the matter, and was accused of spinning the narrative “in typical leftist fashion” to paint himself as a long-suffering victim.
