everyone thinks this is just the labour mps but if you look at the total number of votes available and the number of votes per party it shows a moar disturbing picture.

There is a total of 650 seats aka votes. 175 did not vote or abstained. (same as voting no). total votes cast were 475, labour has 411 mps so 47 did not vote. torys have 121, lib dems have 72, with the remainder making up 46 of the other parties, reform now have 7 who voted to have a vote, that leave 39 votes who could have voted yes or no,

Basically what anon is trying to show is that a lot of mps in there have either been silienced or voted against the inquiry, it helps to zoom out and look at the bigger picture. not sure if there is a list availabe who voted and which way, but this is a just a rough estimate.

An attempt by the Conservatives to have the government set up a national inquiry into grooming gangs has been voted down by 364 votes to 111 votes, a margin of 253.

The amendment was attached to the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which would have been killed had the vote passed.

Earlier in the day, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch argued the government risks fuelling accusations of "a cover up" by refusing an inquiry.

But Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer argued that several inquiries had already been held into abuse carried out by gangs of men and a new probe would only delay the action the victims wanted.

The amendment was largely symbolic, as the size Labour's majority meant it was never likely to pass.

It would also have killed a major piece of government legislation, the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill includes measures aimed at protecting children and tougher rules around home-schooling, as well as changes to academies.

Sir Keir said it was "shocking" Conservative MPs would try to block a bill aimed at helping vulnerable children by voting for the Tory amendment and accused Badenoch of "weak leadership".

Chris Philp, the Conservative shadow home secretary, condemned Labour's vote against the amendment as "morally wrong".

Asked why the Conservatives had brought the amendment, given its limited chances of success, Philp said: "When you're in opposition you need to use every parliamentary device available to try and bring issues to the fore."

"We must have this inquiry and we... will do everything we can to keep the victims at the front of this debate and to try and get the government to do the right thing.

"It's not too late - Keir Starmer could still announce an inquiry and I really hope we can pressure him, persuade him to change his mind and do the right thing for victims."

Boston authorities confirmed they rejected all 15 immigration detainer requests made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the city last year, according to a new report.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox filed a letter to the city council, revealing that the city’s police department did nothing with all of ICE’s detainer requests for the last year, according to the Boston Herald.

Cox cited the Boston Trust Act in rejecting the requests, a rule that protects the city’s sanctuary status and prohibits city departments from working with ICE to detain illegal immigrants on civil warrants.

ICE's Immigration detainer requests ask local, state or federal law enforcement groups to notify the immigration enforcement agency before they release an immigrant from custody that can be removed from the country.

As The Boston Herald noted, these requests ask that authorities keep the illegal immigrant in custody for up to an additional 48 hours, allowing time for ICE to take them into its own custody.

ICE maintains it files detainer requests once probable cause is established that a migrant can be removed from the country. This happens "typically after a court has convicted them of one or more crimes and when the noncitizen poses a public safety or national security threat," the outlet stated.

The police commissioner’s letter reflects city authorities’ ongoing opposition to President-elect Donald Trump's campaign pledge to carry out mass deportation operations throughout the country during his second term.

Democratic Boston Mayor Michelle Wu told outlet WCVB in November that her city won’t cooperate with Trump’s plans.

Dramatic video footage showed an alleged pedophile doctor being arrested by a fleet of police while driving with his stunned wife and mother-in-law.

Dr Stephen Andrew Leedy was arrested December 19 over claims he got children to sent him sex images and helped one girl kill herself, with bodycam footage of that apprehension shared Tuesday.

Officers had been on the look out for the 59-year-old palliative care specialist after a warrant for his arrest was issued in his home state of Florida.

Authorities had been searching for Leedy after they say he forced children to perform sex acts online and helped a young girl hang herself over two years ago.

On December 19 they caught up with him while he was driving with his wife Lynda Leedy and his mother-in-law.

Four cop cars can be seen swarming on his red SUV, pulling him from the vehicle and quickly putting him in cuffs as he asks: 'What is going on here?'

Leedy doesn't appear to be shocked at all as he says: ‘I’m assuming this is a case of mistaken identity, I know nothing of a warrant. I’m gainfully employed, I’m a physician. I’ve had no notice of anything.'

Officers are quick to inform him that he wouldn't have been notified of any warrant, as he is bundled into the back of one of their squad cars.

WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden on Wednesday cancelled the final overseas trip of his presidency just hours before he was set to depart for Rome and the Vatican, choosing to remain in Washington to monitor the response to devastating fires raging in California.

Biden was scheduled to leave Thursday afternoon, after eulogizing former President Jimmy Carter at a memorial service in Washington, for the three-day trip to meet with Pope Francis and Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The trip was meant as a coda to the second Catholic U.S. president’s time in the White House and a final opportunity to showcase the strength of American alliances before he leaves office on Jan. 20.

The announcement of the trip’s cancellation comes just hours after Biden departed Los Angeles after meeting his first great-grandchild, who was born Wednesday at an area hospital. He received a briefing from local fire officials before returning to Washington, as smoke and ash from blazes raging in the area clouded the daytime sky.

“After returning this evening from Los Angeles, where earlier today he had met with police, fire and emergency personnel fighting the historic fires raging in the area and approved a Major Disaster declaration for California, President Biden made the decision to cancel his upcoming trip to Italy to remain focused on directing the full federal response in the days ahead,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

The large Palisades fire sparked Tuesday morning as Biden was in Los Angeles, and the high winds that helped fuel its massive spread forced the president to scrub a planned visit to Thermal to announce two new national monuments.

While flying back to Washington on Wednesday, Biden approved a federal major disaster declaration for Los Angeles County, allowing for federal funding to be made available for temporary housing and home repairs as well as low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses. It also provides additional financial assistance to state and local governments to cover the costs of fighting and cleaning up after the fires.

Second of two parts

Sifting through the thousands of pages of “Serious Incident” reports from the Bay State’s migrant-family shelter program is a brutal read.

The huge trove of documents, which the Herald received through a public records request, detail heartbreaking and disturbing stories involving those in the state-funded emergency housing shelter system.

The Herald earlier this week reported on the release of this massive batch of reports from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities. These troubling reports from the last few years come asGov. Maura Healey deals with the fallout from a big drug and fentanyl bust in a Revere migrant hotel.

Here’s a deeper dive into some of the “Serious Incident” reports in part two of the Herald’s special report:

A mother overdosed while three of her children were in the other room

“A small child answered the door and staff asked if everything was alright,” the report reads. “Despite the child’s affirmation, staff were able to see visible water on the rug.”

The child told the staff members that their mother was in the bathroom, and they should return later. There were three kids in the room, and the staff refused to leave.

“When they entered the bathroom, the water was running, the tub was overflowing, and (redacted) was nude in the tub,” the report reads. “Their attempt to communicate with her was unsuccessful. A 911 call was made when she appeared unresponsive. Police arrived on scene and remained in the room without staff for about 30 minutes.

“As soon as they were able to speak with mom, it became apparent she was under the influence of some kind of substance,” the report continues. “As she struggled to speak, she was barely able to walk and tried to throw people out of her room.”

She was arrested and brought to the hospital. The children were placed in the temporary care of their uncle.

Daughters were possibly being trafficked

A mother was “visibly distraught, sobbing,” telling staff that her daughters were being “picked up in a blue SUV by several adult Haitian males.”

“… at least on two occasions, the girls were gone for 3-4 nights,” the report reads.

When staff went to the hotel room to speak with the daughters, one of them said if she has to live with her mother, “I’d rather be back in Haiti.”

Children neglected, large knife on the floor as their mother slept

When staff went to the room, the children opened the door and their mother — who had a baby 10 days ago — was in bed sleeping.

“The children were in the room and on the floor was a huge knife and a gallon of milk,” the report reads. “There were dirty dishes on stove, counter and sink. The fridge was wide open also.”

Man dies from an overdose

A man’s girlfriend went to the front desk, saying she was concerned because her boyfriend had missed an appointment and wasn’t returning calls.

Staff conducted a wellness check and found the man “naked on the floor near the bathroom, unresponsive, and cold to the touch.”

Police and EMS arrived and pronounced him dead due to an overdose. There were warning signs for the overdose, as his children had been removed due to substance abuse issues.

Female raped

“Around 3 a.m., she heard several loud knocks on her apartment door. As she proceeded to open the door, the person forced himself into her apartment and raped her,” the report reads.

Multiple people tried to take their own lives

The Herald obtained the “Serious Incident Reports Tracker Data” through a public records request. Because the state withheld the detailed records under the Privacy Exemption and Public Safety Exemption, the Herald appealed that with the state and EOHLC agreed to provide the records with redactions.

The latest unconfirmed incident was at 3506 Berry Dr.

Police report is that 5 kids are riding around on scooters lighting fires. One of these incidents was allegedly on Berry.

Helicopters and police cruisers are searching for the suspects, according to reported 911 calls.

The colorful, spiky stars are in the foreground of this image taken with a small telescope on planet Earth. They lie well within our own Milky Way Galaxy. But the two eye-catching galaxies in the frame lie far beyond the Milky Way, at a distance of over 300 million light-years. The galaxies' twisted and distorted appearance is due to mutual gravitational tides as the pair engage in close encounters. Cataloged as Arp 273 (also as UGC 1810), these galaxies do look peculiar, but interacting galaxies are now understood to be common in the universe. Closer to home, the large spiral Andromeda Galaxy is known to be some 2 million light-years away and inexorably approaching the Milky Way. In fact the far away peculiar galaxies of Arp 273 may offer an analog of the far future encounter of Andromeda and Milky Way. Repeated galaxy encounters on a cosmic timescale ultimately result in a merger into a single galaxy of stars. From our perspective, the bright cores of the Arp 273 galaxies are separated by only a little over 100,000 light-years.

DeSantis proposes NASA headquarters in Florida, lauds new space consortium

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants NASA to relocate its headquarters from Washington, D.C., to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida's Brevard County.

"There is an interest in moving the headquarters of NASA right here to Kennedy Space Center," DeSantis told media on Wednesday. "I'm supportive of that."

DeSantis said the current NASA headquarters in the nation's capital is located in a large building that he says people seldom visit and a new building is being planned at a cost of about $500 million.

"Hopefully, with the new administration coming in, they'll see a great opportunity to just headquarter NASA here on the Space Coast of Florida," DeSantis said. "That'd be very, very fitting."

DeSantis made his comments during an event on Merritt Island that heralded the formation of the Florida University Space Research Consortium.

The consortium combines the talents and resources of the Kennedy Space Center, University of Florida, Central Florida University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The consortium's aim is to create advantages for NASA and the universities while advancing the nation's and world's space capabilities. Other universities have an open invitation to join the consortium.

DeSantis said the first American satellite in space, astronaut John Glenn's first Earth orbit and the Apollo 11 mission that put the world's first man on the moon all launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral.

"This is really special ground when it comes to space," DeSantis told media. "If you look at what we've done in the state of Florida, our ecosystem for space has never been better."

NASA administrator Bill Nelson addressed the event via a video statement and welcomed the new consortium's formation.

"This consortium will be an open door to even more possibilities for the researchers, the faculty and the students that have an extraordinary position here in Florida," Nelson said.

The consortium creates "opportunities for research and funding, internships and fellowships ... for teaching and learning," Nelson added.

Nelson did not address DeSantis' suggestion to move NASA headquarters to Florida.

LA Fires From Space: Satellite Images Reveal Paths of Devastating Blazes

The fires in Los Angeles County have grown so large they can be seen from space, as satellite images have revealed the impact of the devastating blazes sweeping across the area.

Images taken by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s GOES-West Satellite show just how much the county's two biggest blazes, the Palisades and Eaton fires, which are burning in the Pacific Palisades and the Pasadena/Altadena regions of LA, have grown since they started on January 7.

Firefighters are also battling several other fires in the county, including the Sunset, Hurst, and Lidia fires.

LA County is the most populated county in America. So far, at least 70,000 residents have been told to evacuate due to these fires, and 1.5 million more were without power as of the afternoon of January 8.

LA is used to wildfires, however these fires are occurring outside of "fire season," and are being fueled out of control by high Santa Ana winds and unseasonably dry conditions.

California received a Federal Disaster Declaration on January 8 to allow for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) aid in the area.

There are now more than 7,500 local state and federal firefighters on the ground, as well as 1,162 fire engines, 23 water tenders, six air tankers, 31 helicopters, and 53 dozers fighting the fires.

While firefighters were able to contain 40 percent of the Lidia fire, and 10 percent of the Hurst fire, another fire, the Sunset fire, broke out on Wednesday night prompting a new evacuation order in the Hollywood Hills.

The Palisades fire was burning at 2,921 acres at midnight on January 8, and is now at 17,234 acres 24 hours later. Similarly, the Eaton fire has spread from 1,000 to 10,590 acres within a day.

California Governor Gavin Newsom: "To the heroes, firefighters, and first responders battling these fires in Los Angeles: Your sacrifice and determination inspire the entire state. California is deeply grateful for your dedication and service."

President Joe Biden: "We're prepared to do anything and everything, as long as it takes, to contain the Southern California fires and help reconstruct. But we know it'll be a hell of a long way. The federal government is here to stay as long as you need us."

The California Department for Emergency Services has warned that Southern California is "not out of the woods," as the high winds and dry conditions are expected to continue fueling the fire through Friday.

The Eaton and Palisades fires are still at 0 percent containment, despite the amount of personnel on the ground.

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Florida universities unite to propel space exploration

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida is entering a new era of collaboration that will propel the nation’s space exploration by leveraging the world-class expertise at three Florida universities.

As outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed Wednesday, the institutions will provide critical research and development support for NASA’s Moon to Mars Initiative, which aims to advance human presence and exploration throughout the solar system.

University of Florida, University of Central Florida and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University are the charter members of the Florida University Space Research Consortium, designated in 2024 as the state’s official space research entity.

Officials from those schools alongside NASA leaders and other distinguished guests participated in the signing ceremony held at Kennedy, marking a critical milestone in a one-of-a-kind partnership to advance research, technology development, education, and communication between the spaceport and the state’s growing space industry.

“Through this agreement, NASA will benefit in new and exciting ways from our longtime partnership with the universities that make Florida shine,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“As we move deeper into this golden era of space exploration, a new generation of thinkers and leaders will lead the way – thinkers and leaders like the researchers, faculty, and students of the Artemis Generation, whom we are pleased to work with through the consortium.”

The creation of the consortium was the result of more than a year of effort by agency and university leaders, with the agreement serving as the official start of partnering activities.

Florida is the only state with a university consortium affiliated with one of NASA’s centers.

Present at the event was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“It was great to visit the Space Coast Jan. 8 to announce the Florida University Space Research Consortium — our state’s official space research entity.

Home to a thriving aerospace industry and world-class higher education institutions, Florida is the ideal place to launch this initiative.

We are primed to lead the nation in developing a blueprint for state-space partnerships into the future.”

The mission of the consortium is to foster a symbiotic relationship between NASA Kennedy and Florida’s universities to drive innovation in space exploration, research, and technology through academic collaboration, joint projects, and workforce development.

“The launch of the Florida University Space Research Consortium is a significant milestone for our state’s aerospace sector, bringing together our world-class education system with cutting edge research and development,” said Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez.

“This consortium will undoubtedly further strengthen and deepen Florida’s position as the leader in the global aerospace economy.”

The memorandum of understanding marks the dawn of a new era of cooperation between the Florida spaceport and the state’s university system.

NASA plans to expand beyond the three charter universities to other state universities interested in participating.

The push to enhance research and technological collaboration with universities has been a priority at NASA for years and has seen success at other NASA centers across the country.

“This agreement is a shining example of what it looks like when we link arms and create a space for the whole to be greater than all our parts,” said Janet Petro, Kennedy Space Center director and a signatory on the agreement.

“This symbiotic partnership makes way for collaborative research opportunities and increased exposure to advanced technology, significantly enhancing NASA’s research output in fields such as aerospace engineering, materials science, robotics, and environmental science, all of which are necessary for long-term human exploration as we learn to live and work deeper into space than ever before.”

The agreement is also a significant milestone for the UF Astraeus Space Institute, which launched in 2024 and is bringing together researchers from across the university, as well as world-class leaders in space science and technology, to promote human capabilities in space mission innovation.

“Florida’s universities have long been prodigious sources of talent, skill and audacious thinking,” said Mori Hosseini, chair of UF’s Board of Trustees.

“This consortium is a perfect way to harness those assets to help lift the great state of Florida and our nation in their quest to keep us at the forefront of space exploration and advance America’s global leadership.”

Pale Blue is Bringing Water-Based Propulsion to Space

Pale Blue, a Japanese startup developing water-based propulsion systems for satellites, announced an agreement with D-Orbit yesterday to demonstrate the technology on two missions in 2025.

The agreement will bring Pale Blue’s 1U+ Water Ion Thruster to space aboard D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier—scheduled to launch in June and October.

It runs on water, man: There’s never been a wider variety of propulsion systems available to satellite operators.

As the orbital freeways get more congested, these systems can help to avoid debris, leaving enough juice to deorbit sats at the end of their lifespans.

However, Pale Blue’s system intends to make that technology as environmentally friendly as possible, without sacrificing capability.

Using water as a propellant means companies won’t have to deal with the challenges that come from handling toxic fuel propellants on Earth.

At less than 2kg, the system boasts a total impulse of 7,000 Ns, giving satellites enough thrust to perform multiple maneuvers on orbit without sacrificing much bus space.

Multiple thrusters can also be clustered together to provide additional thrust for larger sats or more dynamic maneuvers.

Ocean of opportunity: For Italian startup D-Orbit, the agreement marks the company’s entrance into the Japanese space market, which it hopes will flourish in the years to come.

“As our first collaboration with a Japanese company, this contract highlights our commitment to strengthening ties within Japan’s advanced space sector and expanding D-Orbit’s reach in the Asia-Pacific region,” said D-Orbit’s Sales Development Manager Ash Takao in a statement.

BepiColombo snaps Mercury's dark craters and volcanic plains

These pictures of Mercury’s pockmarked surface are the last we’ll see before the BepiColombo mission begins orbiting the solar system’s innermost world in late 2026.

Since launching in 2018, the joint European-Japanese BepiColombo spacecraft has flown by Mercury six times, using each successive approach to reduce its speed and adjust its flight path to make it easier to get into orbit.

While the mission’s main scientific instruments haven’t yet been put to use, the spacecraft’s monitoring cameras have given us some of the clearest views we’ve ever had of the Swift Planet.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has now released three of the most captivating images from BepiColombo’s most recent flyby on 8 January, taken from around 300 kilometres above Mercury’s surface as it flew over the planet’s north pole and northern regions.

“It meant getting up at 5.30am, but once close-up images started to appear in our shared folder, it was worth it,” says David Rothery at the Open University, UK.

“We had studied some simulated views in advance and used these to devise our imaging strategy, but what we saw was better than expected.”

The image above, taken over the planet’s north pole, shows the clear division between sunlight and darkness on Mercury, which researchers call the terminator line.

Mercury has some of the hottest temperatures in the solar system where sunlight falls on its scorched surface, but it also has some of the coldest, in craters that are permanently shadowed by their rims.

Some of these shadowed crater regions can be seen lying along the terminator line in the image.

“It was great looking down on Mercury’s north pole, and even seeing the sunlit tip of the central peak inside the crater Tolkien, whose floor is in permanent shadow,” says Rothery.

Scientists have found some evidence that these cratered regions contain frozen water.

One of BepiColombo’s main mission objectives is to discover whether that water really exists, and how much there is.

Mercury also contains an expansive volcanic plain known as Borealis Planitia, which BepiColombo spied on its flyby.

Researchers think these plains were formed from vast lava flows more than 3 billion years ago that flooded existing craters, some of which can be seen in the above image.

Most of these flooded plains are smooth, with a few impact craters that must have been formed more recently.

The Caloris Basin, which at 1500 kilometres wide is Mercury’s largest crater, appears as a semi-circular patch of lighter-coloured ground extending from the horizon towards the bottom left of the image.

Scientists hope to learn more about how this crater, the Borealis Planitia and the solidified lava flows between are connected once BepiColombo starts orbiting the planet.

The bright region near the top of the planet in this image is called Nathair Facula, and researchers think it is the remnant of Mercury’s largest ever volcanic eruption.

The centre of the region is a 40-kilometre-wide volcanic vent, which appears to have been the source of at least three huge eruptions that spewed volcanic material for hundreds of kilometres.

“[Nathair Facula] was right on the verge of what we expected to be able to make out, but having published on it based on images from the previous NASA mission to Mercury, it was exciting to glimpse it again,” says Rothery.

“It is a very important science target for several of BepiColombo’s instruments when we get into orbit, because it offers our best chance to work out what it is about Mercury’s composition that has allowed explosive volcanic eruptions to continue through much of the planet’s history.”

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google and former executive chairman of Alphabet Inc. has reportedly invested in Relativity Space Inc., a company specializing in 3D-printed rockets.

Relativity Space, headquartered in Long Beach, California, was established in 2015 with the ambition of creating rockets that are nearly entirely 3D-printed.

The company, which encountered fundraising hurdles in 2024, launched its first rocket, Terran 1, in 2023 but failed to achieve orbit.

They have since redirected their efforts towards the larger Terran R, anticipated to launch in 2026.

According to Bloomberg, Schmidt has been supporting the company since last year.

Schmidt’s investment came at a time when the company faced difficulties in securing capital for the development of Terran R and its daily operations.

The company was valued at $4.2 billion in 2021, with investors such as Fidelity Management & Research Company, Jared Leto, and Mark Cuban.

Schmidt, who served as Google’s CEO until 2011 and later as executive chairman, has been involved in various philanthropic and investment endeavors since leaving the board in 2019.

Schmidt and Relativity Space have yet to respond to Benzinga‘s queries.

The investment by Eric Schmidt in Relativity Space comes at a time when the modern space race is intensifying, with private companies vying for dominance in orbit.

This new era, often referred to as “Space Race 2.0,” presents significant investment opportunities as private enterprises, such as SpaceX, lead the charge.

In 2024, SpaceX achieved a milestone with 134 launches, showcasing the rapid advancements in the industry. Relativity Space, despite its initial setbacks, remains a key player in this competitive landscape.

John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ is arguably the most loved song of all time. The track captures Lennon crying out for a fairer world, and it epitomises the Beatle’s legacy within one collective effort. As the decades go on, ‘Imagine’ has morphed into a tragically appropriate tonic to whatever travesty is currently tearing the world apart and, in reality, the true meaning of the track has decayed.

‘Imagine’ is undisputedly Lennon’s most widely revered track from his post-Beatles career but, in truth, the song feels as though it no longer belongs to him due to the plethora of different ways it has been interpreted over the last half a century. The legacy of the song was most perfectly summarised by President Jimmy Carter, who noted: “In many countries around the world — my wife and I have visited about 125 countries — you hear John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ used almost equally with national anthems.”

The song is impossible to avoid and because it has become so deeply ingrained into the culture that the true meaning of the track has become lost. It’s now become the go-to song when it comes to grief or mourning; this is down to the tangible sense of hope that rings out from ‘Imagine’ and an overriding feeling that everything will eventually be okay. However, that’s not the initial message that Lennon intended the song to have.

How ‘Imagine’ took on this meaning can be traced back to a moment when Queen covered the track in tribute to Lennon the day after his death during their performance at Wembley Arena. Stevie Wonder then performed the number during the closing ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics, in tribute to the victims of the Centennial Olympic Park bombing. Later, Neil Young delivered a blistering cover of the iconic track during the ‘9/11 Tribute to Heroes’ concert, and then in 2004, Madonna covered it during a benefit concert for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Fast forward again to 2015, following 90 music lovers lost their lives after attending an Eagles of Death Metal concert at The Bataclan in Paris, the song took on its most pertinent meaning. The day after the brutal killing, German pianist Davide Martello took a grand piano out to the street out in front of the venue to perform a tear-jerking instrumental version of ‘Imagine’, a moment which epitomised the sombre mood that united Paris following the attack.

Yet, in an interview with David Sheff for Playboy Magazine, shortly before his death in December 1980, Lennon shared that Dick Gregory had given him and Ono a Christian Prayer-book which had inspired him to write the track. “The concept of positive prayer…If you can imagine a world at peace, with no denominations of religion – not without religion but without this my God-is-bigger-than-your-God thing – then it can be true.”

The Beatle continued, “The World Church called me once and asked, “Can we use the lyrics to ‘Imagine’ and just change it to ‘Imagine one religion’?” That showed [me] they didn’t understand it at all. It would defeat the whole purpose of the song, the whole idea.”

The brightest comet in nearly 20 years — comet G3 ATLAS (C/2024) — is expected to reach its peak brilliance later this week into early next week.

The only question is: "Will you actually be able to see it?"

This celestial paradox belongs to Comet 2024 G3 (ATLAS), which was first sighted on April 5 of last year by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey, in images obtained with a 0.5-meter (19.7-inch) reflector telescope located in Rio Hurtado, Chile.

At the time of discovery, the comet was 407 million miles (655 million km) from Earth and shining at an exceedingly faint magnitude of +19. That's roughly 158,000 times dimmer than the faintest star visible to the naked eye.

A preliminary orbit for this comet indicated that it was going to pass exceptionally close — less than 9 million miles (14 million km) from the sun in mid-January 2025; only about one-quarter the distance of Mercury, the closest planet to the sun.

However, these initial calculations also suggested that G3 ATLAS was a new comet coming directly from out of the Oort cloud, a vast bubble composed of countless billions of icy objects encircling our solar system, located perhaps 10 trillion miles (16 trillion km) from the sun.

Small sun-skirting comets originating from the Oort Cloud, making their first approach to the sun, often disintegrate before reaching perihelion (their closest approach to the sun).

But after G3 ATLAS’s orbit was refined, it was determined that it was actually a dynamically old comet, having made at least one previous close approach to the sun, with an orbital period of roughly 160,000 years.

This provided hope that — having survived a prior close encounter with the sun — this comet could survive its impending close brush and possibly put on a bright display after the start of the new year.

Unfortunately, to date, the predicted path of G3 ATLAS has only favored those in the Southern Hemisphere. Practically the entire predicted track of this comet lies through constellations well south of the celestial equator.

For those in the Northern Hemisphere, the comet’s path over the past month has taken it through the southern constellations of Lupus and Scorpius, and it currently resides in Sagittarius.

This means that for observers north of the equator, the comet has been positioned much too low on the southeastern horizon and perpetually obscured by the glow of bright morning twilight.

However, as the comet is now coming down the “home stretch” before it whips around the sun, it has begun to brighten dramatically.

For a relatively short time, its path will curve just far enough north to give those north of the equator a fighting chance to glimpse it.

Recent observations collected on the Comet Observation database (COBS) suggest that, on Jan. 2, 2025, G3 ATLAS experienced a sudden outburst, showing a nearly four-fold increase in apparent brightness.

However, John Bortle, a well-known and highly reputable comet observer, expressed ambivalence about this unexpected brightness spike. In an email to Space.com, Bortle noted:

"The apparent instability exhibited in the recent magnitude increase usually can be interpreted as a bad sign that the comet is showing evidence of breaking up, but some other unusual features that have been reported such as the 'shadow of the nucleus' is a classic feature of any large comet near perihelion, and not a sign of disruption."

Still, Bortle is uncertain about G3 ATLAS's ultimate fate, "I think chances of its survival are about 50:50," Bortle noted.

Another noted comet observer, Nick James of the British Astronomical Association, also took note of the comet's latest surge of brightness. He was recently quoted at Spaceweather.com as stating: "The sudden jump in brightness was significant.

This could have been an early sign of disintegration, but since then the comet is still brightening. It looks as if this outburst has not been fatal."

Another noted comet observer, Nick James of the British Astronomical Association, also commented on the comet’s latest surge in brightness.

Rep. Scott DesJarlais is taking the helm of the House Armed Services Committee’s space and nuclear weapons oversight panel.

His appointment was announced Jan. 7 as part of the Republican reshuffle for the 119th Congress.

The Tennessee lawmaker’s ascension to chair the Strategic Forces Subcommittee comes as Pentagon leaders warn that Beijing is rapidly expanding its space warfare capabilities, potentially threatening the satellite networks that underpin U.S. military power.

DesJarlais, who has served in Congress since 2011, replaces former Colorado Rep. Doug Lamborn, who has retired.

He will oversee a broad portfolio including missile defense, nuclear deterrence and military space programs – areas where House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) has promised aggressive oversight amid growing great power competition.

The commercial space sector could see a boost under DesJarlais’ leadership.

The six-term congressman has pushed for deeper integration of private space capabilities into military systems, arguing that commercial innovation could help the Pentagon move faster and cheaper in responding to emerging threats.

In previous subcommittee hearings, DesJarlais has advocated for procurement reforms that would make it easier for the Defense Department to buy commercial products and services.

One of the major long-term trends in American political culture is the migration of ideological hardliners from the fringes of the left to the more moderate and moderating mainstream. New Left radicals became rank-and-file Democrats; a youthful Saul Alinsky acolyte made it to the White House, where he governed as a fairly standard neoliberal.

And if there’s ever been a taboo against former committed Castro regime enthusiasts making it to the highest levels of national politics, it might be on the verge of being broken, too.

In the mid-1970s, California Congresswoman Karen Bass, who is now under consideration to be Joe Biden’s running mate, was an organizer for the Venceremos Brigade, according to several contemporaneous media accounts and an interview with the future congresswoman published in a 1996 Ph.D. dissertation. The brigade organized six-week work trips for American leftists of all tendencies who wanted to visit and support Cuba—think of a more overtly activist version of Birthright, but for people whose promised land was an anti-American, anti-gay communist dictatorship 90 miles off the coast of Florida.

An event blurb in an October 1975 issue of the communist Daily World newspaper describes Bass, then 22, as “leader of the Venceremos Brigade in southern California.” Bass herself explained her work for the brigade to a doctoral candidate working on a 1996 Ph.D. dissertation submitted to the Fielding Institute, titled “Women Activists of Diverse Backgrounds: A Qualitative Study of Perceived Influences and Values.” “Another critical influence for Bass began, at age 19, and spanned the next five years: Cuba,” reads the document, written by Dawn Noggle, who is currently the director of mental health services for the Maricopa County correctional system. “As a ‘brigadista’ and then organizer for the Venceremos Brigades, Karen visited Cuba every 6 months.”

When reached for comment about Bass’ involvement with the Venceremos Brigade on Monday, a spokesman for Bass’ office wrote the future congresswoman “wasn’t a leader—she went with other volunteers to build houses. She’s been to Cuba several times because she believes, like she said on MSNBC last night, the best way to improve relationships is through communication and diplomacy. It’s why she’s on the Ronald Reagan-founded Board of the National Endowment for Democracy, it’s why she went with President Obama, it’s why she went with Secretary Kerry, it’s why she went to visit USAID prisoner Alan Gross.”

The Venceremos Brigade’s pilgrimages to Cuba—the group was founded in 1969 by members of SDS and the Cuban government—were a magnet for the most radicalized and often delusional cadres of the American left, including overtly Maoist and pro-Soviet communist groups that preached the imminence of a U.S.-style workers revolution. The culture clash between American radicals and Cuban communist functionaries at times erupted into intense conflict during the early 1970s, most notably when it came to the Cuban government’s insistence that homosexuality was a form of illegal social deviance and that gay activists—and often individuals suspected of being homosexual—should be incarcerated under brutal conditions, for decades at a time.

Interestingly, Bass’ work in Cuba helped the future congresswoman reject the cultural looseness that 1960s radicalism had often championed. “Cuba was for her what psychotherapy is for others—a process through which she re-examined her values, her behavior, her relationship with her family, and her future goals,” Noggles’ dissertation concluded. “The irresponsibility and drug-taking of the ’60s had to be discarded; family was and is to be treated with respect; egotistical, self-indulgent behavior was to be confronted and changed. She still speaks of the experience and the individuals she met in Cuba with respect and a certain awe.”

The “mass deportation” of illegal immigrants is a decision that the State can legitimately take, and this is a principle dictated by Natural Law even before positive civil law or Canon Law.

When we hear representatives of the deep church (i.e. the Bergoglian “church”) or the deep state speak, we ought to realize that these people are emissaries of the subversive globalist lobby, and that every word they say is false, because behind an apparently acceptable excuse they actually hide unmentionable criminal purposes.

Let us not be surprised then if "Cardinal" McElroy - appointed by Bergoglio as "Archbishop" of Washington, heir of the serial abuser and right-hand man of the Argentine Jesuit, Theodore McCarrick - is so busy with immigrants, LGBTQ+, the environment and vaccines: these are the points of the Agenda 2030, which the Bergoglian "church" has been promoting since the Mafia of St. Gallen managed to have a puppet of the World Economic Forum elected "pope". And let us not be surprised if what the exponents of the deep state and the deep church have in common is corruption, vice, and perversion.

Representatives for unionised US dockworkers have reached a tentative agreement on a contract dispute with ports and business interests on the US East Coast and Gulf Coast that will stop union workers from reopening a strike action that shut down shipping operations for three days in October 2024.

The International Longshoremen’s Association said it had reached "tentative agreement on all items for a new, six-year Master Contract" for its representatives with employer the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX).

Details of the agreement are being withheld to allow ILA members to review the terms and approve the document in a ratification vote.

“We are pleased to announce that ILA and USMX have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year ILA-USMX Master Contract, subject to ratification, thus averting any work stoppage on 15 January 2025,” the two sides said in a joint statement.

“This agreement protects current ILA jobs and establishes a framework for implementing technologies that will create more jobs while modernising East and Gulf coast ports – making them safer and more efficient, and creating the capacity they need to keep our supply chains strong. This is a win-win agreement that creates ILA jobs, supports American consumers and businesses, and keeps the American economy the key hub of the global marketplace.”

An initial tentative deal in October between the ILA and USMX reached agreement on improvements in wages for workers that will surpass 60% over six years. The tentative deal allowed work in the ports to resume for 100 days while negotiations on other contract points continued.

Contractual elements that remained on the negotiating table included the role of automation in ports. With details yet to be revealed, ILA president Harold Daggett said a face-to-face meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on 12 December was the "chief reason the ILA was able to win protections against automation" for its 85,000-member workforce.

“You have proven yourself to be one of the best friends of working men and women in the United States," the ILA president told President-elect Trump in a statement. President-elect Trump will be sworn in as the 47th US President after serving as the 45th US President from 2016-2020.

“President Trump clearly demonstrated his unwavering support for our ILA union and longshore workers with his statement “heard round the world”backing our position to protect American longshore jobs against the ravages of automated terminals. President Trump’s bold stance helped prevent a second coast-wide strike at ports from Maine to Texas that would have occurred on 15 January 2024, if a tentative agreement was not reached,” Mr Daggett said.

Major container carrier Maersk had already warned its customers on 30 December to expedite collection and return of containers to US East and Gulf Coast ports as a "proactive measure" to mitigate potential disruptions.

Longtime DFL operative Charlene Briner announced she is leaving her role as acting director of the Office of Cannabis Management; no reason was cited.

The longtime DFL bureaucrat who Gov. Tim Walz tapped to help him appoint the state’s first-ever (and short-lived) cannabis “czar” has stepped down as the agency continues well into its second year without a permanent director.

Charlene Briner was first hired by Gov. Walz in summer 2023 to help lead the administrative launch of the newly created Office of Cannabis Management. At the time, Briner was a consultant for the Department of Agriculture and previously worked for the House DFL caucus as a communications specialist, the Department of Health as a deputy commissioner, and had once run for state legislature as a DFL-endorsed candidate.

One of Briner’s chief responsibilities for the Office of Cannabis Management was to field applications for its first director, just two months after Walz signed a marijuana legalization bill into law.

Ironically, it was Briner who ended up effectively serving in that role for the last 18 months as Walz has yet to officially hire a permanent director for an office that is tasked with overseeing the marijuana consumer landscape, expungements process for prior weed-related offenses and a budding sales industry that has yet to launch.
