“Without a doubt, if we weren’t here, none of our houses would be. There’s not even a 1 per cent chance”, Mr Colbert said on Friday as he poked his hose up against the smouldering remains of a neighbour’s home to stop it spreading.

The men’s diciest moment came on Wednesday night, when the fire barrelled towards them from the west, engulfing two of their neighbours’ wooden homes and sending them up in flames within 20 minutes.

First went the house two doors along from Mr Griffiths on Topanga Beach Drive, as the inferno made eucalyptus trees explode. Then the next one went up “like a Roman candle”.

“Everything was coming this way. The fire was coming this way, the smoke, the embers in the air, the wind was unbelievable”, he said.

“Softball-sized pieces on fire were landing around us,it was almost apocalyptic. It’s like, you see these things coming at you, and they land on the ground. Thank God, the majority will not go on the house, but the ones that do, you put out immediately.But if no one is here to do that, then they eventually burn the house down.

“We didn’t know when it was gonna end. That was probably the scariest thing.”

The trio responded by jumping on nearby roofs, spraying the flames and using dirt and sand to put out any fires on the ground. They got blown over several times, buckling under the power of the 80mph gusts.

His 24-year-old student son, also called Chester Griffiths, added: “This has all been, honestly, under the leadership of my dad.

“He’s been preparing for this for so long. He’s a champion, he has warrior mentality.”

Mr Colbert hasn’t slept in days. Speaking on Friday, he admits he doesn’t know what day it is. He does know he was meant to have kidney surgery on Jan 10, which he has just discovered is today.

Soot, ash and smoke have stained his skin in every cavity and crevice, but he insists he is as clean as possible, having just had his fifteenth shower since the fires began.

For the first 10 hours, Mr Colbert was entirely alone, the fire swooping towards him from the east, engulfing nearby beloved neighbourhood institutions such as The Reel Inn, a fish shack.

Then he saw a notice on his phone telling him to evacuate.

“It said ‘Get out, grab your pets, your loved ones, and leave now,’” he said.But he stayed put.

Luckily, his 93-year-old father, who lives downstairs in Mr Colbert’s home of 45 years, had been at a medical appointment and couldn’t get back.

At some point during the daring mission,Mr Colbert’s hair caught fire, but he is not entirely displeased with the outcome.

“I look like I have a full head of hair now, don’t I? It’s great. It’s all ash,”he jokes.

‘All this, and people are trying to steal too’

“Every bone in my body hurts,” he adds, limping across the sand in front of the oceanfront homes. He has never had a problem with his knee, but now it is strapped up in a brace.

His slower mobility was a challenge whenhe was forced to chase after looters who had come to raid the remaining homes.

It was Thursday evening when Mr Colbert saw two men walking down the hill.

“I started screaming at them, and then they ran. Then I went down to my car, and I turned on my car and the lights, and I set my alarm off so they know that we’re here,” he said.

“On top of all that, there’s these people trying to steal from you.”

Brazil gives Meta 72 hours to explain changes to fact-checking program

Brazil’s government will give Meta until Monday to explain the changes to its fact-checking program, Solicitor General Jorge Messias said on Friday.

The move comes after the social media company scrapped its US fact-checking program and reduced curbs on discussions around topics such as immigration and gender identity.

It is not immediately clear exactly what will happen after the deadline expires.

“I’d like to express the Brazilian government’s enormous concern about the policy adopted by the Meta company, which is like an airport windsock, changing its position all the time according to the winds,” Messias, the government’s top lawyer, told reporters in Brasilia.

“Brazilian society will not be at the mercy of this kind of policy,” Messias added.

On Thursday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the changes were “extremely serious” and announced he had called a meeting to discuss the topic.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In announcing the move on Tuesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited “too many mistakes and too much censorship.” A spokesperson said on Tuesday that, for now, Meta was planning the changes only for the US market.

Reuters, which was a Meta partner on its US fact-checking program, has declined to comment.

As of this morning, the Palisades Fire "has spread nearly 20,000 acres," according to NBC News. It has destroyed thousands of structures and is now the "most destructive" wildfire ever in Los Angeles.

Alongside the Palisades Fire, there are also several other fires in the Los Angeles area that firefighters are working tirelessly to contain. The second largest is the Eaton Fire, which has burned "across 13,690 acres," according to NBC News. As of right now, it was 3% contained.

As someone who is not from Los Angeles, visualizing this has been unimaginable. So, to put it into perspective...

For the Palisades Fire, 20,000 acres is about 31.25 square miles.

This means if you were to run the New York City Marathon, which is 26.2 miles, you would still have five more miles to go.

A regulation US football field is 1.32 acres, which means the Palisades Fire is about the equivalent of 15,151 football fields.

Dodger Stadium is the second largest baseball stadium in the US by capacity. It holds around 56,000 fans. It's only 1.65 square miles. So, the Palisades Fire would be like if you had almost 19 Dodger Stadiums lined up.

Narendra Modi Stadium in India, which notably hosts cricket games, is one of the largest sports stadiums in the world, with a capacity of approximately 132,000 people. It's only 100 acres in size. You would need 200 Narendra Modi Stadiums to come close to the size of the Palisades Fire.

Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour was one of the biggest concert events of all time. She played her biggest show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, with around 96,000 fans in attendance. The complex only uses approximately 10 acres of land. You would need about 2,000 of them to equal how big the Palisades Fire is.

For more perspective, Central Park in NYC is only 843 acres. So, the wildfire is currently the equivalent of almost 24 Central Parks combined.

Actually, the entirety of Manhattan is 14,600 acres, or 22.81 square miles, so the Palisades Fire is bigger than the whole borough.

The urban settlement of Inverness, Scotland, is approximately 12.1 square miles, so the Palisades Fire would be the equivalent of Inverness times nearly three.

And the wildfire is actually bigger than some cities. For instance, Monaco, which sits near the border of Italy and France, is only approximately 0.80 square miles.

The Palisades and Eaton Fires combined can almost cover half of some major US cities, too.

For instance, Seattle, WA, has a land area of approximately 84 square miles. The Palisades Fire plus the Eaton Fire is approximately 33,690 acres total, aka 52.6 square miles.

And finally, while the exact number is often in flux given the land that has been purchased and developed over time, Disney World in Orlando, Florida, is approximately 27,258 acres. So, yes, the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire combined are currently bigger than all of the theme parks, water parks, hotels, and more.

OnFriday afternoon, the trio were still working relentlessly to put out firesin the nearby homes, craning over walls to shoot water at the source, clouds of smoke radiating off, stinging eyeballs.

A few doors down from them is what has been described as the last standing house in Malibu.

The survival of the $9 million property, which belongs to David Steiner, a retired waste management tycoon originally from Texas, had been put down to its fire- resistant materials.

But Mr Colbert said he and the Griffithses had been keeping an eye on it, and doused it in water when the porch caught fire.

Mr Griffiths bought his property in 2005 and the family moved in in 2009.

They tried to fireproof it at the time, building sprinklers in the roof and using cement tiles instead of wood.

Mr Griffiths, who is also a doctor to the LA Kings hockey team, saidif one thing can come from the devastating tragedy, he wants people to get to know their neighbours.

“We were only able to do this because we’re a tight-knit community,”he said.

“This whole thing is a f—ing tragedy, beyond apocalyptic proportions. I’m so sad. I’m very sad for everyone that is so impacted, their families, their lives, their livelihoods, their history, all going... it’s cataclysmic for those people... I mean, I don’t know what to say.

“I’m happy that it turned out OK for us, but it may not have happened. I made a video on the first night of our home, recording memories in each room,” he added.

Neighbour’s precious memories of late son saved

Kathy Eldon, who runs Creative Visions Foundation, a non-profit enterprise, was among the handful of neighbours whose homes were saved by the three men.

When she evacuated, she didn’t have time to pick up the journals written by her late son, Dan Eldon, a British photo-journalist who was killed in Somalia in 1993, and she feared they would be lost forever.

Ms Eldon said she felt “survivor’s guilt” because her home is still standing, but through her foundation she is determined to “turn all the horror into something really good”.

For the others, what has taken place hasn’t quite sunk in yet.

“When I’ve got time I think I’ll be emotional,” Mr Colbert said.

For the rest of the weekend, Mr Griffiths will be “on duty” – wearing his fireman’s braces and protecting his and his neighbours’ homes.

On Monday, he will return to the day job as a brain surgeon.

Australia abandons ‘misinformation’ bill

In a win for free speech advocates, the Australian Government formally abandoned its misinformation bill over the weekend, after failing to secure support in the Senate.

The proposed laws would have forced social media companies to show that they were preventing the spread of misinformation and disinformation on their platforms, with fines of up to 5% of global revenue for non-compliance.

The controversial bill was opposed by the Coalition (conservative Liberal and National Parties) but after several amendments, it sailed through the House of Representatives earlier this month with the support of Labor (centre left) and the Teals (the Greens did not participate in the vote).

However, by last week it was clear that Labor’s bill would not enjoy the same success in the Senate, as critical support from independent crossbench senators collapsed. The Greens’ announcement on Friday that the Party would not support the bill was the final nail in the coffin.

“Based on public statements and engagements with Senators, it is clear that there is no pathway to legislate this proposal through the Senate,” said Communications Minister Michelle Rowland in a statement withdrawing the bill on Sunday, the day before it was to be voted on in the Senate.

The bill has been so roundly rejected by the Senate that a motion was passed on Monday to acknowledge the “shocking flaws” in Labor’s misinformation bill, and for the government to “categorically rule out reintroducing it.”

High Level of Community Concern

According to research by the Australian Media Literacy Alliance oft-cited by Rowland, 80% of Australians want the government to do something about misinformation and disinformation online – but this bill was not it.

The Senate inquiry into the bill drew more than 30,000 responses, indicating “significant public interest and community concerns,” according to a report handed down by the committee on Monday.

By comparison, fewer than 100 submissions were made during consultation on Digital ID legislation.

Just over 8,000 of these submissions were submitted by individuals or organisations, while a further 22,000 were submitted through various campaigns. The committee published only 105 of the submissions it received, tracking a recent trend of Senate committees selectively withholding submissions from the Parliament website (this may in part have been due to the tight turnaround time for the inquiry).

Additionally, some senators said they had received “thousands” of calls and emails asking them to vote against the bill.

An earlier version of the bill released by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in 2023 drew a similarly strong response, attracting approximately 23,000 submissions to the consultation. However, the government hoped to win support for its revamped bill this year by strengthening protections for free expression.

Carve-outs for satire, parody, news content, academic, artistic, scientific, and religious content were intended to “carefully balance the public interest in combatting seriously harmful misinformation and disinformation with the freedom of expression that is so fundamental to our democracy,” said Rowland when the bill was reintroduced in September.

But the committee noted that concerns over the impact of the proposed laws on freedom of expression had not been allayed, with a plurality of community and professional groups – including human rights groups, religious groups, medical unions, and law societies – worried that speech protections were not adequate.

Other criticisms raised during the inquiry included: the overly broad definitions of “serious harm,” “misinformation,” and “disinformation;” the inclusion of “opinions” in content that would be censored; lack of transparency in the ACMA’s decision-making processes; the prospect of the government’s misuse of powers; and that the exemption of powerful media corporations from the rules would give billionaire oligarchs an unfair advantage over smaller, independent news operations.

In additional comments, Liberal Senator Dave Sharma said that while the committee’s report had made a “valiant attempt to construct support for the legislation,” the truth was that “almost no witnesses who appeared before the committee were prepared to speak in support of it.”

Despite the committee’s view that “doing something is better than doing nothing when it comes to keeping Australians safe online,” given the lack of support for the bill in the Senate, the sole recommendation of the report is that the bill be “withdrawn immediately.”

‘Gaping Hole at the Heart of the Bill’

One of the main sticking points during the Senate inquiry into the bill was the fact that it would require social media platforms to arbitrate whether information should be censored or downranked, without clear explanation as to how they were expected to do this.

Legal expert James McComish from the Victorian Bar said that the bill didn’t lay out exactly how truth would be determined by social media platforms.

“That is the gaping hole at the heart of the bill. For it to be shown that any content is misinformation or disinformation, the true position has to be identified,” he told the Senate inquiry into the bill.

The ACMA said it would play no role in arbitrating the true position, but would rather apply a “systems-based approach” that would scrutinise the platforms’ processes for handling misinformation and disinformation.

Constitutional scholar Anne Twomey said that this arrangement effectively put foreign corporations, like Elon Musk’s X platform or Chinese-owned TikTok, in charge of shaping Australia’s public discourse online.

“As a general principle, outsourcing censorship to foreign corporations is generally not a good idea,” Twomey told senators.

Platforms would rely heavily on fact-checkers – as they already do, but this would be enforceable by the ACMA under the new legislation.

But Twomey, an expert frequently called upon for fact-checks, said that in her experience, fact-checkers are often “young kids out of university” who “misunderstand the experts” and “often get it wrong.”

“They’re taking on this really important role of making a decision that will lead Meta or Google or whatever to make decisions about what is true and what is false, when the fact-checker themselves hasn’t properly understood what the experts have said,” Twomey told the inquiry.

Real Problem, Wrong Solution

Senators opposing the bill said that while the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation online is a real problem that needs to be addressed, this bill was not the right solution.

“We are concerned this bill doesn’t actually do what it needs to do when it comes to stopping the deliberate mass distribution of false and harmful information,” said Greens spokesperson for communications, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young on Friday.

“It gives media moguls like Murdoch an exemption and hands over responsibility to tech companies and billionaires like Elon Musk to determine what is true or false under ambiguous definitions. It does little to stop non-human actors like bots flooding social media and boosting dangerous algorithms.”

The Greens want “comprehensive reforms that tackle the business models and dangerous algorithms that fuel division and damage democracy, and legislate a duty of care so these platforms prevent harm in the first place,” said Senator Hanson-Young.

Independent Senator David Pocock agreed that the bill took “the wrong approach,” posing a threat to free speech, while at the same time failing to target the underlying issues of algorithm transparency and bot activity.

“I believe that our rights to speech and protest are fundamental to a healthy democracy. As these rights are not legislated, we must be vigilant whenever legislation is put forward that could encroach on these rights,” he said in a newsletter email.

Australia has only a constitutionally implied right to freedom of political communication, which is much weaker speech protection than, say, America’s First Amendment.

However, “Bots do not have a right to freedom of speech and are being weaponised to influence views on different topics, including in elections,” he said, calling for tougher action on bots, and for legislation forcing social media companies “to show us how they are using algorithms to influence users.”

What Next?

Despite withdrawing its misinformation bill, the Labor Government has not given up on its stated goal of making Australians safer online.

“The Government invites all Parliamentarians to work with us on other proposals to strengthen democratic institutions and keep Australians safe online, while safeguarding values like freedom of expression,” said Rowland over the weekend.

Rowland put forward several legislative initiatives, including strengthening offences targeting the sharing of non-consensual and sexually explicit deep fakes; a proposal to enforce truth in political advertising for elections; and progressing reforms on the regulation of Artificial Intelligence.

Other legislation in the works that will impact Australian internet and social media users include a move to criminalise doxing, new privacy reforms, and new hate speech laws.

As yet, the government has not indicated any plans to tackle social media algorithms and bots, which senators identified as a high priority.

The Labor Government is also ramming through a bill to enforce a minimum age of 16 years for social media. Despite allowing only a single day for public submissions and two days for Senate review, Crikey reports that the government’s snap inquiry attracted 15,000 responses.

Oversight chair plans meeting with Patel to plot take-down of ‘Deep State’

House Oversight and Government Reform Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) plans to meet next week with Kash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump’s yet-to-be-confirmed pick to run the FBI, to discuss how he can be an ally in the new administration’s efforts to root out the so-called Deep State.

“I want [Patel] to know that our committee will assist in any way possible to help him disrupt the ‘Deep State,’” Comer said in an interview on Thursday, referring to the conspiracy of illicit power-players running the government.

Patel, who if confirmed would replace Christopher Wray as head of the FBI, has come under scrutiny for suggesting he intends to go after Trump’s political adversaries. But Trump’s allies, including Comer, have argued that Wray failed to address bias at the agency that they claim has become overly politicized.

While his confirmation hearing date has not yet been set, Patel has promised if installed in the posting to rebrand the FBI headquarters as a so-called “museum of the deep state” and enumerated members of the “Deep State” in his book “Government Gangsters.”

Comer said his committee could help in Patel’s effort, specifically suggesting the Oversight Committee could relay to Patel’s team the names of bureaucrats “that kept coming up in our depositions and interviews of people that were obstructing and covering up.”

He was alluding to the officials interviewed in the previous congress during the House GOP’s ultimately unsuccessful impeachment inquiry into the outgoing president, Joe Biden, of which Comer was a leader.

That probe, which never culminated in a formal impeachment vote, was based on allegations that Biden engaged in “impeachable conduct” for using his position to enrich those close to him. Comer and his colleagues ultimately recommended that the Justice Department prosecute the president’s son Hunter Biden and brother James Biden for lying to Congress.

In an interview, Comer also suggested there was more work to be done in scrutinizing whether officials sought to obstruct his committee’s prior work surrounding the impeachment inquiry.

“[Patel] and I are fixing to meet because with respect to him, they need to hold some people accountable for a cover up,” Comer asserted. “It’s a big deal to know that the president of the United States is on the take, and yet you do nothing — and I would go further, obstructed our investigation and coordinated with the media to write things that just weren’t true.”

The expected meeting with Patel, a former Trump National Security Council staffer, is an early sign that the House GOP will play a key role in the Trump administration’s efforts to transform the Department of Justice and potentially pursue action against their political opponents.

Comer’s committee has already submitted a request that Biden’s former Social Security Administration Commissioner Martin O’Malley, who is also a candidate for chair of the Democratic National Committee, appear before his committee this Congress.

The Oversight Committee chair is also not the only panel leader looking to keep the Biden administration on the front burner despite the upcoming transfer of power. House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said in an interview this week he might, in the months ahead, seek to recall the special counsel in the Hunter Biden criminal probe to get more information about the scope of the allegations against him.

Ukrainian drone hits large oil refinery in Russia’s Tatarstan

A Ukrainian drone hit the Taneko oil refinery in Tatarstan, Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported on Jan. 11.

The refinery is one of the country's largest oil-processing facilities.

Workers at the refinery in Nizhnekamsk were evacuated amid the attack, and local footage showed smoke rising from the site.

Andrii Kovalenko, Head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, confirmed the strike, and emphasized its strategic importance.

"The refinery plays a key role in providing fuel to the Russian military. Taking out refineries and oil depots directly affects Russia's ability to wage an intensive war," he said.

The refinery, which processes over 16 million tons of oil annually, was previously targeted in a drone attack in spring 2024, causing damage to its primary processing unit.

Taneko refinery is located in the city of Nizhnekamsk, around 1,300 kilometers from the country's border with Ukraine.

Medieval Crowns and Scepters Discovered Hidden Inside the Walls of a Crypt Beneath a Lithuanian Cathedral

The royal treasures were stashed away at the beginning of World War II. Experts knew the trove existed, but previous attempts to find it had failed.

In the crypts of a Lithuanian cathedral, researchers have discovered a trove of royal treasure: crowns, jewelry and a scepter that belonged to several Lithuanian-Polish monarchs from the 15th and 16th centuries. The regalia had been hidden for 85 years—since it was stowed for safekeeping beneath the Vilnius Cathedral in southeastern Lithuania.

Last fall, experts were invited to explore Vilnius Cathedral’s subterranean level, where they used an endoscopic camera to look into cracks and holes in the crypt’s walls. In December, the researchers opened “a secret hiding place” in the church’s crypts, “where the royal regalia was hidden at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939,” as Vilnius Archbishop Gintaras Grušas told reporters earlier this week, per the Polish news network TVP World.

“The discovered insignia are priceless historical treasures: symbols of Lithuania’s long tradition of statehood, symbols of Vilnius as the capital city and magnificent works of goldsmithing and jewelry,” says Grušas.

The collection includes a crown of Alexander Jagiellon, the king of Poland between 1501 and 1506. It also features crowns, chains, medallions, scepters, orbs and rings belonging to Elisabeth of Austria (also known as Elżbieta Habsburżanka) and Barbara Radziwiłł—the first and second wives of Sigismund II Augustus, who served as king of Poland in the mid-1500s.

The Jagiellon and Habsburg dynasties are two of European history’s most powerful families, as Mykolas Sotincenka, a spokesperson for the Vilnius Archdiocese, tells Live Science’s Kristina Killgrove. These rulers set in motion Poland’s golden age.

Each of these kings acted also as grand dukes of Lithuania, as Poland and Lithuania were united between the 14th and 18th centuries.

Found among the royal accessories were insignia made for these rulers’ burial chambers. As Grušas said, “These crowns were not worn while the rulers were alive but were made after their deaths and were intended to be part of their tombs,” per TVP World.

In 1931, a flood damaged the cathedral’s crypt, exposing the three rulers’ coffins. The funerary regalia was then gathered from the burials, as Sotincenka tells Live Science. The researchers found the accessories wrapped in newspaper dated 1939, tucked in a cavity beneath a staircase in the crypt. Historians knew from records that the cache of regalia existed, but attempts to find it hadn’t been successful—until now.

According to a statement from Vilnius’ official development agency, the artifacts connected to Radziwiłł add “a romantic and legendary dimension to this discovery.” Born in 1520, the famously beautiful and witty Radziwiłł was already a widow by the 1540s, when she became the king’s mistress. Their subsequent marriage caused a scandal: Nobles thought Radziwiłł promiscuous and unfit. In time, she became “one of the most celebrated figures in Lithuanian history,” per the statement.

The trove has been cataloged and will now undergo restoration before being publicly displayed later this year. As Rita Pauliukevičiūtė, director of the Church Heritage Museum, says in a statement shared with CNN’s Jack Guy, “These symbols are important both for the state and for each of us, as signs of European identity, as a reclaimed identity of the old state, as a sign of the strength of our roots.”

Meta and Amazon are axing their diversity programmes, joining firms across corporate America that are rolling back hiring and training initiatives criticised by conservatives, citing legal and political risks.

The move comes just days after Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, said it was ending a fact-checking programme criticised by President-elect Donald Trump and Republicans.

In a memo to staff about its decision, which affects, hiring, supplier and training efforts, Meta cited a "shifting legal and policy landscape".

Walmart and McDonalds are among the other companies to have made similar decisions regarding diversity efforts since Trump won re-election.

In its memo to staff, which was first reported by Axios and confirmed by the BBC, Meta cited a Supreme Court ruling concerning race in college admissions, while also noting that the term "DEI" (diversity, equity and inclusion) had become "charged".

The tech giant said it would continue to look for diverse staff, but end its current approach, which seeks to make selections from a pool of diverse candidates.

In a December memo to employees, Amazon said it was "winding down outdated programs and materials" related to representation and inclusion, aiming to complete the process by the end of 2024.

"Rather than have individual groups build programs, we are focusing on programs with proven outcomes — and we also aim to foster a more truly inclusive culture," Candi Castleberry, Amazon's VP of inclusive experiences and technology, wrote in the note which was first reported by Bloomberg on Friday.

Financial firms JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock, also pulled out of groups focused on risks from climate change this week.

The moves are a sign of the acceleration of a retreat that started two years ago, as Republicans ramped up attacks on firms such as BlackRock and Disney, accusing them of "woke" progressive activism and threatening political punishment.

Big brands such as Bud Light and Target also faced backlash and boycotts related to their efforts to appeal to LGBTQ customers.

Many of the diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives were put in place after the Black Lives Matter protests that erupted in 2020 following George Floyd's murder at the hands of police.

Recent court decisions have bolstered critics of the programmes, who said that they were discriminatory.

The Supreme Court in 2023 struck down the right for private universities to consider race in admissions decisions.

Another court of appeals ruling invalidated a Nasdaq policy that would have required companies listed on that stock exchange to have at least one woman, racial minority or LGBTQ person on their board or explain why not.

Meta said it was also ending its efforts to work with suppliers who are "diverse" but will instead focus on small and medium-sized companies.

It also plans to stop offering "equity and inclusion" training and instead offer programmes that "mitigate bias for all, no matter your background".

Meta declined to comment on the memo, news of which was immediately met with both criticism and celebration.

"I'm sitting back and enjoying every second of this," said conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who has taken credit for successfully campaigning against the policies at companies such as Ford, John Deere and Harley-Davidson.

LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign said workplace inclusion policies help to attract and retain top staff and had been "directly tied to long-term business growth".

"Those who abandon these commitments are shirking their responsibility to their employees, consumers, and shareholders" RaShawn "Shawnie" Hawkins, the senior director of the HRC Foundation's Workplace Equality Program said.

Meta's move comes just days after the tech giant said it was ending a fact-checking programme criticised by Trump and Republicans and elevated conservatives to key leadership positions.

"I feel like I have much greater command now of what I think the policies should be," he said, adding that he felt the US government "should be defending its companies ... not be the tip of the spear attacking".

Germany says Russian 'shadow' ship stuck in Baltic Sea

German authorities have said an oil tanker stuck in German waters belongs to Russia's "shadow fleet", which Berlin says is used to avoid sanctions.

Germany's maritime authorities (CCME) said on Friday that the Panamanian-flagged ship, known as Eventin, had lost power and steering, meaning tugboats were deployed to secure the vessel.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock blamed Moscow, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of "circumventing" sanctions and threatening European security by "ruthlessly deploying a fleet of rusty tankers".

Russia, which previously declined to respond to accusations that it uses a shadow fleet, has not yet commented on this incident.

The US, UK and the EU have imposed sanctions on Russia's oil industry following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In its first report of the tanker drifting in German waters, the CCME said the vessel was 274m (898ft) long and 48m (157ft) wide, carrying about 99,000 tonnes of oil.

German maritime authorities said the oil tanker was drifting at a low speed in the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea, north of the German island of Rügen.

A four-person team of specialists was lowered onto the vessel by helicopter on Friday night to establish towing connections, which were secured. Three tugboats took control of the "stricken vessel" that is "unable to manoeuvre".

Maritime authorities said on Friday night that no oil leaks had been detected.

In its latest update on Saturday evening, German maritime authorities said the towing convoy around the tanker was headed to Sassnitz, a town on the island of Rügen, and would arrive early on Sunday.

Earlier, authorities said the convoy of tugboats working to rescue Eventin remained north of Rügen and was moving eastwards "slowly", at about 2.5 km per hour (1.5mph).

CCME said they had taken safety measures given the rough seas, as the area where the vessel is located was experiencing 2.5m-high (8ft) waves and strengthening wind gusts.

Although the vessel sports the Panamanian flag, German authorities have blamed Russia for the incident.

"Russia is endangering our European security not only with its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, but also with severed cables, displaced border buoys, disinformation campaigns, GPS jammers and, as we have seen, dilapidated oil tankers," the German foreign minister said in a statement.

Last December, the European Union said it was working on measures including sanctions to target "Russia's shadow fleet, which threatens security and the environment, while funding Russia's war budget".

The European bloc's remarks came after undersea cables in the Baltic Sea were damaged by a suspected vessel, which the EU believes was part of Russia's shadow fleet.

The move was a further step taken by Western countries to hit the Kremlin's oil industry in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Since tougher embargo measures were put in place to halt Russia from exporting oil, Moscow is believed to be using ships with unclear ownership to transport goods - namely oil - across the globe.

As reported by the Atlantic Council, a US-based think tank, Russia is "instrumentalising the dark fleet, using it especially as a primary conveyor of oil exports".

The shadow fleet, or dark fleet, is the name given to ageing ships that sail "without the industry's standard Western insurance, have opaque ownership, frequently change their names and flag registrations, and generally operate outside maritime regulations", according to the Atlantic Council.

The latest incident in the Baltic Sea comes as Washington and London joined efforts to directly sanction energy companies Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the move to weaken Russian oil companies would "drain Russia's war chest," adding that funds taken "from Putin's hands helps save Ukrainian lives".

But Gazprom Neft slammed the sanctions as "baseless" and "illegitimate", as reported by Russian state news agencies.

Also on Friday, the US Department of the Treasury said it had sanctioned 183 vessels that are "part of the shadow fleet as well as oil tankers owned by Russia-based fleet operators".

President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to delay the ban, which will begin one day before his inauguration unless it is sold to a new non-Chinese owner.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has indicated it is not open to a forced sale.

On Friday, the Supreme Court heard over two hours of arguments about whether banning the app would violate Americans’ freedom of speech.

The justices, including conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett, seemed skeptical of the claims and said, “The law doesn’t say TikTok has to shut down. It says ByteDance has to (sell TikTok).”

“It doesn’t’ say, ‘TikTok, you can’t speak,’” liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson added, according to a New York Daily News report.

Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh appeared to accept that the ban is an effort to prevent Chinese indoctrination of young Americans.

“That seems like a huge concern for the future of the country,” Kavanaugh said.

Trump’s nominee to be solicitor general, John Sauer, filed an amicus brief with the court in December.

The brief argued, “President Trump is one of the most powerful, prolific, and influential users of social media in history.”

“Consistent with his commanding presence in this area, President Trump currently has 14.7 million followers on TikTok with whom he actively communicates, allowing him to evaluate TikTok’s importance as a unique medium for freedom of expression, including core political speech. Indeed, President Trump and his rival both used TikTok to connect with voters during the recent Presidential election campaign, with President Trump doing so much more effectively. As this Court instructs, the First Amendment’s ‘constitutional guarantee has its fullest and most urgent application precisely to the conduct of campaigns for political office.'”

The brief continued, “Furthermore, President Trump alone possesses the consummate dealmaking expertise, the electoral mandate, and the political will to negotiate a resolution to save the platform while addressing the national security concerns expressed by the Government—concerns which President Trump himself has acknowledged.”

“This Court should be deeply concerned about setting a precedent that could create a slippery slope toward global government censorship of social media speech,” Sauer wrote in the filing. “The power of a Western government to ban an entire social-media platform with more than 100 million users, at the very least, should be considered and exercised with the most extreme care—not reviewed on a ‘highly expedited basis.'”

Trump vowed to “save” the app during his presidential campaign.

The president-elect met with TikTok CEO Shou Chew at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month to discuss the matter.

“You know, I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok because I won youth by 34 points and there are those that say that TikTok has something to do with it,” Trump said during a press conference earlier this month.

Congress passed the ban earlier this year in response to widespread opposition to Israel spreading like wildfire on the app. It was signed into law by Joe Biden in April.

TikTok has over 170 million users in the United States alone.

The Walls Close In On Zelensky As He Begs For NATO Cannon Fodder

The walls are closing in on Ukraine’s 'President' (former, now dictator) Zelensky.

In a meeting with allies in Germany this week, the embattled leader requested NATO troops on the ground in Ukraine.

“Our goal is to find as many instruments as possible to force Russia into peace. I believe that such deployment of partners’ contingents is one of the best instruments. Let’s be more practical in making it possible.”

Nothing about this proposal is “practical”. Even if Zelensky is speaking about 'peacekeeping' troops as part of a settlement, which isn’t about peace at all, it’s still a fundamentally crazy idea thinking this will lead to peace. Simply put, it would bring us to the brink of nuclear war with Russia, which no sane person wants.

Of-course, this isn’t the first time Zelensky has suggested that NATO should send troops to fight and die in this war. But this latest instance is noteworthy because it comes just ahead of President Trump’s inauguration.

Now for some Good! news...

President Trump has stood his ground on this issue thus far.

Just this week he acknowledged that NATO’s courtship of Ukraine was a major cause of the war, noting that if Ukraine were to join the Western military alliance, “then Russia has somebody right on their doorstep, and I could understand their feelings about that.”

Trump correctly blames Biden for promising Ukraine NATO membership and escalating the war.

In early December, Trump’s team conveyed the message that Ukraine would need to make major concessions to end the war. Those concessions will probably involve giving up land already captured by Russia, agreeing to a form of disarmament, and pledging to never join NATO.

This was an important shift, as it became clear even to the biggest hawks that Ukraine wasn’t going to recapture much, if any lost territory. And forget about Crimea.

Meanwhile, it’s unclear whether Zelensky and the Ukrainian deep state would agree to such concessions. It’s also unclear whether they truly have a say in the matter, unless they’re prepared to go it alone against Russia.

The waste of life in this conflict is exponentially larger than the public has been told. In December of 2024, President Zelensky claimed that only 43,000 of his nation’s troops had been killed in the war so far. In truth, upwards of 600,000 Ukrainian soldiers have likely died. On paper, the Ukrainian army is over one million strong. But across the line, foxholes are empty. Where are all the soldiers? When the truth about this war comes out, it will shock anyone who is still paying attention at that point.

Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze — the crew of the current Shenzhou 19 mission aboard Tiangong — have been working alongside a robot named Xiao Hang ("Little Space") using human-robot collaborative interaction software.

The software has allowed them to carry out a variety of experiments related to human-robot spatial relationships, robot behavior characterization and multimodal interaction technologies.

The goal of these experiments is to help enhance mission efficiency by fostering a more effective interaction between astronauts and robotic systems, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

Xiao Hang can be seen moving and orienting itself in microgravity and is able to line up and take photos on command. But there may be bigger roles to step into going forward.

"In the future, it will also be able to perform various functions such as in-cabin inspections and resource management through upgrades," Wang Haoze, China's first female spaceflight engineer, said in a New Year's greeting message, Global Times reported.

Private drones being flown near the wildfires consuming Los Angeles County continued to interfere with aerial firefighting efforts Saturday evening, according to officials, as the death toll from the flames rises.

Officials have detected 48 privately owned drones flying over the fires since the infernos erupted Tuesday, Los Angeles County Deputy Fire Chief Robert Harris said during a briefing Saturday evening.

"When those privately owned drones are detected, we have to pause firefighting activities, so we ask you to please assist us by not operating drones in the area," Harris said, adding that the drones’ owners are being sought by police and will face potential prosecution.

Authorities urge civilians not to fly drones near wildfires because they can get in the way of low-flying firefighting aircraft and delay emergency responders. Pilot distractions can be deadly.

On Thursday, someone flew a private drone into the wing of a Quebec 1 Super Scooper firefighting aircraft as it carried water to battle the wildfires.

Officials said the collision caused a "fist-sized hole" in the aircraft and knocked it out of service until at least Monday.

The Super Scooper, which had flown down from Canada, was working to contain the Palisades Fire at the time of the incident.

The pilots were unaware of the drone hit, which wasn’t discovered until they landed at Van Nuys airport and maintenance staff noticed the hole, officials said.

The FAA is investigating, and a spokesperson told Fox News Digital that interfering with firefighters is a federal crime punishable by up to a year in prison and a $75,000 fine.

Meanwhile, the death toll in connection with the wildfires has jumped to 16, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Five of the deaths were attributed to the Palisades Fire and 11 resulted from the Eaton Fire.

As of Saturday evening, the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth and Hurst fires had consumed about 62 square miles, an area larger than San Francisco, Cal Fire said.

The Palisades and Eaton fires – the two largest wildfires – have so far scorched 59 square miles.

Firefighters are still working to contain the Palisades and Eaton fires. Cal Fire reported containment of the Palisades Fire at 11% and the Eaton Fire at 15% on Saturday night.

With the battle set to continue, firefighters are bracing for another round of strong winds expected starting on Monday, said Michael Traum of the California Office of Emergency Services.

Nearly 100,000 People Sign Petition Calling for LA Mayor’s Resignation

More than 92,000 people have signed an online petition demanding the immediate resignation of Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass over her “gross mismanagement” of the devastating wildfires in the region.

The Change.org petition accuses Bass of mishandling the wildfires, noting she was not even in the country when the fires first broke out. Bass was 7,400 miles away in Ghana at the inauguration of the country’s president when the fires started raging on Tuesday.

“We . . . urgently call for the immediate recall of [Bass] due to her gross mismanagement and failure to effectively respond to the devastating 2025 fires in and around the city,” reads the petition, which was started Wednesday.

“Water supplies have been severely strained, billions of taxpayer dollars have been misallocated or left unaccounted for, and countless lives have been lost,” the petition adds.

“Families have been displaced, homes destroyed, and livelihoods shattered — yet Mayor Bass has been absent from the frontlines, choosing to travel abroad while her constituents suffer,” the petition adds.

Nearly 130,000 Californians have faced evacuation orders and at least 16 people had died as a result of the fires. Five wildfires remained active in Los Angeles County on Sunday, including Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth, Hurst and Archer. The Palisades fire has been the costliest in Los Angeles history.

FBI working to piece together drone that damaged super scooper while battling Palisades Fire

The FBI released new photos of a damaged water-dropping super scooper firefighting aircraft that collided with a drone over the Palisades Fire.

According to officials, the plane collided with a privately-owned drone, causing significant damage to it. The drone put a 3x6 hole in the aircraft, causing a 20- to 30-minute delay in the aerial firefight.

"I'd just like to stress, that technique, using that super scooper aircraft, are our most effective technique to fight fires like this, and when this happens, it puts everybody's lives at risk," said Akil Davis, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office.

The low-flying, surface-skimming planes dip into the water before dumping its contents over blazing wildfires. As the wind-driven fires continue across Southern California, officials are pleading with people to not fly drones over wildfire-ravaged areas.

"Our biggest concern is that there are so many unauthorized drones in the area that they are impacting law enforcement and firefighters' efforts to suppress this fire and actually get it contained," said Davis.

Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) are put in place by the FAA to alert pilots of areas of restricted air travel due to a hazardous condition, a special event, or a general warning for the entire FAA airspace.

TFRs are currently in place over the Palisades and Eaton fires, allowing firefighting aircraft the airspace they need. They apply to all aircraft, including drones.

Drone videos of destroyed neighborhoods are spreading over social media, despite the threat of jail time.

"We'll work backwards through investigative means to try and recreate that drone and figure out what company owns that drone and who it was assigned to," said Davis.

During a news conference Thursday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman reiterated that anyone caught flying a drone faces severe consequences.

"If you're thinking that it's fine to send a drone up in the area for your own amusement, or you want to get information that nobody else can get, and you do it in one of these areas that for which drones are not permitted ... you will be arrested, you will be prosecuted and you will be punished to the full extent of the law," he said.

According to the FAA, you can still be arrested and fined, even if TFRs are not in place.

"Even if a TFR is not in place, drone pilots should avoid flying near wildfires," the FAA states. "It's a federal crime to interfere with firefighting aircraft regardless of whether restrictions are established, and violators can face stiff penalties."

The damaged super scooper plane was only one of two super scoopers available, and it's now out of commission until at least Monday as it gets repaired, officials said.

The pilots were unaware they hit the drone until they landed at Van Nuys Airport and the maintenance staff noticed a "fist-sized hole," according to officials.

In 2019, KABC's helicopter had to make a precautionary landing after it was hit by a drone while flying over downtown Los Angeles.

"We heard this pop, a loud bang," said pilot and reporter Chris Cristi. "We felt it, we heard it. We all looked at each other. Didn't really know what it was.

Just assumed it was a bird because that happens every once in a while. When we got on the ground, though, it was a different story."

FAA rules prohibit flying drones within five miles of an airport, above 400 feet elevation or in a way that interferes with manned aircraft. It also says drones cannot be operated beyond the unassisted line of sight of the operator.

And if you're thinking of citing "the media" as a reason to be exempt from the rules, the FAA stresses that even media personnel are not allowed to fly near wildfires unless they're granted a special approval that "must directly support a response, relief, or recovery activity."

"Not only are these drone flights illegal and dangerous for our firefighters," said ABC Owned TV Stations executive producer and licensed drone pilot, Tim Sarquis, "It makes flying legitimately more difficult. When drone pilots break the rules, it hurts everyone, resulting in more restrictions if not full out bans of drones in some areas."

Announcing the operation, Yemen’s Armed Forces Spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree stressed that the Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to deal with any escalation of attacks by the US or the Israeli regime.

Yemen is committed to its obligations towards the oppressed Palestinian nation and continues to fulfill its duties in this field, he stressed.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian Resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

Yemeni Armed Forces have said that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza, which have killed at least 27,948 people and wounded another 67,459 individuals, come to an end.

Bannon blasted Musk for his pro-H1B visa positions, as well as his post on X calling Trump supporters “racists and retards” in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
