Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre tipped to replace Trudeau with unbelievable odds

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is the top contender to become Canada's new prime minister following Justin Trudeau's resignation on Monday.

Poilievre, 45, has a 92 percent chance of becoming Canada's next prime minister in October's elections, according to Polymarket.

As expected, Trudeau, 53, resigned on Monday, raising questions about who would take over the ruling Liberal Party, or if power could switch to the Conservatives in an election that must be held by late October.

In Canada's political system, the prime minister is not elected directly, but chosen by the members of the majority party in parliament — currently the left-leaning Liberals.

But as the Liberal party struggles in the polls, that could change in October's parliamentary elections. If the Conservatives obtain parliamentary majority, they will place their leader Poilievre as prime minister.

Trudeau will remain in power until his party selects a new leader, which they will need to do before general elections in the fall that polls forecast Conservatives winning.

It comes as US president-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House, threatening huge tariffs on its northern neighbor and even offering suggesting that Canada could become America's 51st state.

Poilievre has previously said Canada needs an immediate election and requires a prime minister who can face Trump from a position of strength.

'We cannot have a chaotic clown show running our government into the ground,' he said.

Trudeau's departure after nine years' in office left the party without a permanent head at a time when polls show the Liberals will badly lose to the Conservatives in the 2025 election.

An increasing number of Liberal parliamentarians, alarmed by a series of gloomy polls, had publicly urged Trudeau to quit.

Other possible successors that have been floated in last months include Trudeau's ex-finance chief Chrystia Freeland and banking boss Mark Carney.

DailyMail.com takes a look at the contenders for Canada's top job.

Poilievre has led the Conservatives since 2022 and is a key candidate to replace Trudeau if voters boot the Liberals out of office in this year's election.

He campaigns for more oil and gas production and against Trudeau's botched immigration policy, which led to hundreds of thousands of arrivals, straining an already overheated housing market.

The Conservatives currently hold a 21-point lead over the Liberals. Online gambling sites give Poilievre even better odds at becoming the country's leader this year.

Poilievre says he could increase Canada's exports to the US and strike a 'great deal' with Trump, who has vowed to use punishing tariffs on Ottawa as a way to reduce a trade deficit.

Speaking with right-wing Canadian influencer Jordan Peterson this month, Poilievre said he would quickly greenlight new oil refineries, liquefied natural gas plants, nuclear facilities and hydropower schemes.

In the interview, he said Trump 'negotiates very aggressively, and he likes to win, but in the end, he doesn't appear to have a problem if his counterparty also wins.'

'And so I think that we can get a great deal that will make both countries safer, richer, and stronger,' he added.

3 days ago I told McDonald’s that I’d be doing a story on woke policies there. Today they’ve announced the following changes:

• Hiring: They will END their diversity "goals" for how many of each race they hire. Many (myself included) have referred to these types of "goals" as quotas because these "goals" often operate as quotas that discriminate against white job applicants.

• They’ll no longer participate in the HRC’s woke Corporate Equality Index scoring system that forces the trans agenda into the workplace in exchange for a perfect score. They also won’t participate in other 3rd party surveys.

• Supplier diversity: They’re ENDING the DEI pledge for their supply chain. That means no diversity quotas or "goals" will exist for how they choose or prioritize suppliers. Focus will now be on merit.

• Their diversity team will be "evolving" this year into simply an "inclusion" team. I explain in the video how I feel about this.

Chinese risk of influence over Afghanistan to harvest their minerals after Biden's disastrous retreat

In a chilly auditorium in Afghanistan, heaps of freshly mined green emeralds glowed under bright table lamps as bearded gemstone dealers inspected them for purity and quality.

An auctioneer asked for bids on the first lot, which weighed 256 carats. With that, the Taliban’s weekly gemstone auction was underway.

These sales, in the emerald-rich Panjshir Province of eastern Afghanistan, are part of an effort by the Taliban government to cash in on the country’s vast mineral and gemstone potential.

Since seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban say they have signed deals with scores of investors to mine gemstones, gold, copper, iron and other valuable minerals, like chromite. These buried treasures offer a potentially lucrative lifeline for a feeble economy.

China has led the way in investments under its Belt and Road Initiative, an aggressive effort to spread Chinese influence worldwide. Russian and Iranian investors have also signed mining licenses, filling the void left by the chaotic U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

The U.S. government estimates that at least $1 trillion in mineral deposits lie beneath Afghanistan’s rugged landscape. The country is rich in copper, gold, zinc, chromite, cobalt, lithium and industrial minerals, as well as in precious and semiprecious gemstones like emeralds, rubies, sapphires, garnets and lapis lazuli.

Afghanistan also holds a trove of rare earth elements, according to the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, a U.S. agency that will close this year. Such elements are used in an array of modern technology, like mobile phones, laptops and electric vehicles.

The Taliban are trying to do what the United States could not during its 20-year occupation. The U.S. government spent nearly a billion dollars to develop mining projects in Afghanistan, but “tangible progress was negligible and not sustained,” the special inspector general concluded in a report published in January 2023.

Many of the hurdles from that time could still apply: a lack of security, poor infrastructure, corruption, inconsistent government policies and regulations, and frequent turnover of government officials.

The Taliban are nonetheless giving it a shot, desperate for revenue after Afghanistan’s precipitous loss of aid with the U.S. withdrawal.

During the war, the United States provided roughly $143 billion in development and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, propping up the U.S.-aligned government. Since 2021, the United States has given $2.6 billion in such aid, delivered by a private contractor in shrink-wrapped cash bundles on flights to Kabul, according to the special inspector general.

The Afghan economy has shrunk by 26 percent over the past two years, the World Bank reported in April. The sharp decline in international aid, the bank said, has left Afghanistan “without any internal engines of growth.”

On top of that, the Taliban’s ban on opium production has cost farmers $1.3 billion in income, or 8 percent of Afghanistan’s gross domestic product, the World Bank said. The ban has led to the loss of 450,000 jobs and reduced land under poppy cultivation by 95 percent, the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime reported.

Mining could help replace poppies as a steady revenue stream. Turkey and Qatar, along with China and Iran, have invested in iron, copper, gold and cement mines. Uzbek companies have signed deals to extract oil in northern

Afghanistan, according to the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.

The Taliban are already collecting tax from emerald sales.

Under the previous government, the emerald trade was a corrupt free-for-all. Warlords and politically connected dealers dominated the trade, and tax collection was haphazard at best.

But as the Taliban government has instituted the weekly emerald auctions, it has controlled and taxed all sales. Dealers who buy emeralds at the auctions do not receive the gems until they pay the 10 percent levy.

The Taliban are taxing other precious stones as well, including rubies and sapphires.

Rahmatullah Sharifi, a gemstone dealer who bought two sets of emeralds at the auction, said he didn’t mind paying the tax.

“The government needs the money to develop the country,” he said. “The question is: Will they spend it on helping the Afghan people?”

In Panjshir Province, where most Afghan emeralds are mined, the government has issued 560 emerald licenses to foreign and Afghan investors, said Hamayoon Afghan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.

The ministry has also granted licenses to mine rubies in Panjshir and Kabul Provinces, Mr. Afghan said, and plans are underway for emerald and precious stone licenses in three other provinces.

But many new licenses are for mines that have yet to open. And many existing mines are hobbled by poor infrastructure and a dearth of experienced engineers and technical experts.

Mr. Afghan conceded that the country needed more engineers and technicians. Foreign investors bring in experienced experts, he said, and they are obligated under licenses to employ Afghans and teach them technical and engineering skills.

Most of the emeralds bought at the weekly auctions are resold to foreign buyers, dealers said. Among the dealers buying emeralds one day in November was Haji Ghazi, who sells gemstones from a tiny cell-like room within a darkened warren of shops in downtown Kabul.

Two days after the auction, Mr. Ghazi bolted his shop’s door, closed the curtains and unlocked an ancient safe. He withdrew several caches of emeralds and rubies, each one wrapped in a plain white sheet of paper.

Mr. Ghazi’s largest set of emeralds was worth perhaps $250,000, he said. He estimated that a much smaller cache of bright rubies was worth $20,000.

In a corner, Mr. Ghazi had piled heavy chunks of rock bearing thick blue veins of lapis lazuli, a semiprecious stone. Much of the world’s supply of lapis is mined in northern Afghanistan.

Mr. Ghazi sells most of his gemstones to buyers from the United Arab Emirates, India, Iran and Thailand. He said he missed the days, before the Taliban takeover, when the occupation brought eager buyers from the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Australia.

In an adjacent shop, Azizullah Niyazi switched on a desk lamp to illuminate a collection of lapis lazuli, rubies, sapphires and emeralds spread across a small table. He was still awaiting his first customer of the morning.

Mr. Niyazi said sales were not as robust as during the 13 years he was allowed to sell gemstones one day a week from a small shop on a U.S. coalition military base. His profits soared as soldiers and civilian contractors lined up to buy gemstones every Friday — and they rarely haggled over prices, unlike Afghan or Arab buyers, he said. He paid a 7 percent tax on his profits, he said.

These days, Mr. Niyazi must travel to increase sales: He said he had opened a shop in China, where he made regular visits. In Kabul, he sells to buyers from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as well as from Pakistan, Iran and a handful of other countries.

He has few Afghan customers.

“Not many Afghans can afford to pay $1,000 or $2,000 for a stone to make a ring,” he said with a shrug.

A mining and artificial intelligence start-up backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos has raised $537mn in its latest funding round, as it seeks to become a key player in the race for the critical minerals needed for the energy transition.

Berkeley-based KoBold Metals said its series C funding round valued the company at $2.96bn, and was co-led by existing investor T Rowe Price, which has been joined by Durable Capital Partners.

Existing investors including Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures and US venture capital group Andreessen Horowitz also participated in the round, along with new backers including private capital group StepStone.

KoBold, which has raised $1bn to date, is among the western mining companies seeking to compete with Chinese rivals to produce metals such as copper, lithium and nickel.

The metals are used in everything from batteries for electric vehicles to the defence industry, and western governments have been increasingly seeking to diversify away from supply chains dominated by China.

As part of these efforts, the US is helping finance the revival of the Lobito railway line that will transport critical minerals across swaths of Africa and connect the Democratic Republic of Congo with Zambia and Angola.

KoBold, which uses AI to comb through historical and scientific data to identify untapped mineral deposits, said in February that it had discovered a huge deposit of copper in Zambia. The $2bn Mingomba site would produce at least 300,000 tonnes per year from the 2030s, KoBold said.

KoBold’s co-founder and chief executive Kurt House said about 40 per cent of the new capital would be spent on developing existing projects into mines, with the Zambian copper project taking “the lion’s share of that”.

The company — which uses OpenAI’s generative AI technology as well as more traditional AI — planned to “add at least three jurisdictions” including Finland and Botswana, House said, adding that he was excited about the prospects for lithium mining in Canada.

House said he was confident that there was broad political support in the US for improving access to critical minerals despite incoming president Donald Trump having indicated that he wants to roll back support for electric vehicles — a key market for metals including lithium.

There is “very broad bipartisan support for diversifying [the] supply of critical minerals” because this is a “national security priority”, he said. “We’ve had plenty of conversations with people who will be associated with the next administration who are very enthusiastic about KoBold’s mission.”

KoBold plans to hire “aggressively” and add data scientists who have a more traditional technology background to its teams, as well geoscientists to survey possible deposits and collect data, said House. The company was likely to go public within three to five years, he added.

“There’s a real demand from [mining] majors to partner with [KoBold] so clearly they’re doing something right,” said David George, a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz. “I don’t think there’s an obvious modern competitor in the space.”

KoBold has an exploration partnership with mining major BHP in Western Australia and is also working with Rio Tinto.

Carmichael Roberts, managing partner at Breakthrough Energy Ventures, said KoBold’s AI-driven approach to mineral exploration would create “a more secure, affordable, and clean energy future for all”.

The files reveal the results of an intense two-month investigation into Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr., a Maryland politician who served in a long career as a member of Congress and mayor of Baltimore.

John F. Kennedy's White House ordered the investigation after JFK planned to appoint D'Alesandro to a government post. A routine FBI name check revealed "allegations" against D'Alessandro, according to a Feb. 6, 1961 teletype from "FBI Director." The director at the time was J. Edgar Hoover.

The "urgent" teletype seemed to signal the goal of ensuring that D'Alesandro would be appointed to a government watchdog board that reviewed defense contracts.

"The White House has requested that we proceed with a special inquiry investigation but that if substantial derogatory information were developed, we should report this and discontinue any further inquiries because substantiation of any of the allegations would eliminate Mr. D'Alesandro," the FBI director wrote in the teletype that is located on page 19 of the trove.

"Assign immediately," Hoover wrote, instructing the Baltimore and Washington field offices to "afford continuous attention" to the investigation.

In sometimes illegible and heavily redacted reproductions, the 248-page collection shows that FBI agents were tasked with running down rumors and facts surrounding their man.

"There have been allegations that D'Alesandro has associated with the Baltimore criminal element and [redacted] and the son, Franklin Roosevelt D'Alesandro, had been arrested for rape," an agent wrote on page 14 of the trove. The allegations may have been rumor, the agent noted.

Elsewhere in the trove, agents wrote about the son, who was arrested and acquitted on charges that saw others convicted of raping two young girls, aged 11 and 13. The young D'Alesandro, who died in 2007, also was tried and acquitted of perjury in relation to that case.

Judge finds Rudy Giuliani in contempt of court in defamation case

A federal judge in New York has found former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani in contempt of court for not complying with orders to turn over information about his assets to a pair of former Georgia election workers he defamed.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman made the contempt finding Monday afternoon after Giuliani testified over two days to answer questions about why he’d failed to hand over assets and court-ordered discovery information to help satisfy Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss’ $146 million defamation judgment against him.

Giuliani, the former New York mayor and U.S. attorney, "willfully violated an unambiguous order of the court" by failing to provide information when he was supposed to, Liman said.

"The defendant has attempted to run the clock by stalling," he said.

"Discovery is not supposed to be a shell game where the hidden ball is moved around and around," he added.

He said he'd rule on "appropriate sanctions" against Giuliani later.

Giuliani testified remotely earlier in the day from his Florida home, telling his lawyer Joseph Cammarata that he had tried to comply with court orders in the case and blaming earlier failures to do so on his previous attorney. He also complained that he has had difficulty juggling his various court cases, including two criminal cases and two other defamation suits related to his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

"Some days it is completely impossible because there are conflicting demands for material and appearances on the same day," Giuliani said.

He also said he had found some key documents that Freeman and Moss had been waiting for — the proprietary lease for his multimillion-dollar Manhattan apartment and the title for his Mercedes-Benz convertible.

Both documents, however, include his divorced wife on the titles and need to be amended before Freeman and Moss' attorneys can use them.

Freeman and Moss had asked the judge to find Giuliani in civil contempt for failing to turn over information and to surrender numerous valuable assets — including a New York Yankees jersey autographed by Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio — to pay down the $146 million judgment.

The pair were awarded the sum in their defamation lawsuit against Giuliani, who they said had spread falsities about Trump’s election loss in 2020 resulting in an onslaught of racist and violent threats against them.

Their attorneys had urged Liman in a court filing to apply “appropriate sanctions” to prompt Giuliani’s compliance with court orders after he repeatedly ran afoul of deadlines to turn over assets and financial data.

Giuliani said Friday that the DiMaggio jersey was “missing” and denied an assertion made by a friend, Monsignor Alan Placa, that he had seen it framed in Giuliani’s property in Palm Beach, Florida, within the past two years.

On Monday, Giuliani said he's still searching for the jersey. "I don't know where it is, and it is hard to re-create who took it, and I am personally conducting my own investigation about this," he said.

Testifying in court Friday, Giuliani denied having withheld other Yankees memorabilia, saying he wasn’t “hiding” a signed image of Reggie Jackson, another Hall of Famer, that the election workers’ attorney said was listed as an asset in a bankruptcy document.

Lawyers for Freeman and Moss have argued that Giuliani had demonstrated “a consistent pattern of willful defiance of the Court’s Turnover Orders,” and they cited his failure to surrender the proprietary lease and co-op shares to the estimated $6 million Manhattan apartment, cash in his bank account and the title document for his Mercedes, which used to belong to Hollywood icon Lauren Bacall.

Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Giuliani, said in a statement, “It's tragic to watch as our justice system has been turned into a total mockery, where we have charades instead of actual hearings and trials.”

A trial will be held in the New York case on Jan. 16, to determine the status of Giuliani's Florida condo and possession of his Yankees World Series rings, which he says he gifted to his son years ago.

Giuliani is also facing a second contempt proceeding in Washington, D.C., this week over whether he should face sanctions for continuing to defame Freeman and Moss on his livestreamed “America’s Mayor Live” show in defiance of a court-ordered agreement.

U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy — who prosecuted military secrets leaker Jack Teixeira, probed the state investigation into Karen Read and brought charges against Stoughton cop Matthew Farwell — will be stepping down before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

Levy, who took over after Rachael Rollins resigned in disgrace, tendered his resignation to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday. Levy’s final day will be Jan. 17.

When a new president is inaugurated, it’s customary for a U.S. Attorney to resign as the incoming president appoints a new office leader. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Murrane, who has been with the Department of Justice for 16 years, will assume the role of Acting U.S. Attorney after Levy’s departure.

US dramatically shrinks Guantanamo prisoner population to 15 men

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Joe Biden's administration slashed the prisoner population at Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba by nearly half on Monday, sending 11 detainees to Oman.

The U.S. military said only 15 detainees remained there after the transfer, following a major push toward closing the facility by Biden's administration in its final days in office.

The detention center was first opened on Jan. 11, 2002, by President George W. Bush to hold terrorism suspects and "illegal enemy combatants" during the U.S. "War on Terror" following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

Guantanamo Bay housed roughly 680 prisoners at the detention center's peak in 2003, according to Pentagon data.

The latest transfer of the 11 men, all of whom are from Yemen, leaves the U.S. naval base in Cuba with fewer detainees than when it opened with the arrival of prisoners from Afghanistan.

"The United States appreciates the willingness of the government of Oman and other partners to support ongoing U.S. efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility," the U.S. military said in a statement.

The Pentagon named the 11 men transferred as: Uthman Abd al-Rahim Muhammad Uthman, Moath Hamza Ahmed al-Alwi, Khalid Ahmed Qassim, Suhayl Abdul Anam al Sharabi, Hani Saleh Rashid Abdullah, Tawfiq Nasir Awad Al-Bihani, Omar Mohammed Ali al-Rammah, Sanad Ali Yislam Al Kazimi, Hassan Muhammad Ali Bib Attash, Sharqawi Abdu Ali Al Hajj and Abd Al-Salam Al-Hilah.

Of the remaining 15 detainees, the Pentagon said three are eligible for transfer and an equal number are eligible for a periodic review board to examine their cases. The remainder have been charged or convicted of war crimes.

Shunxing39 cargo vessel is heading for Pusan after Taipei suggests anchor-dragging was ‘sabotage’

Taiwan has asked South Korea for assistance investigating a Chinese-owned ship suspected of cutting a subsea cable off its northern coast on Friday.

Taiwan telecoms operator Chunghwa Telecom and the Taiwan Coast Guard said on Saturday that the cargo vessel Shunxing39 was believed to have caused damage to a communications cable — close to the port of Keelung on Taiwan’s north coast — on the morning of January 3.

It follows incidents where Chinese ships came under scrutiny when fibre optic cables in the Baltic Sea were severed last November and a gas pipeline and cable were damaged there in October 2023.

The latest occurrence highlights the vulnerability of crucial offshore communications and energy infrastructure and the difficulties in prosecuting sabotage.

While the ship sails under Cameroon’s flag, Taiwan officials said it was owned by Jie Yang Trading Limited. The Hong Kong-registered company’s only listed director is Guo Wenjie, a mainland China citizen.

Chunghwa Telecom said data connections were immediately restored by rerouting data to other international subsea cables.

But Taipei is concerned that China could surreptitiously cut Taiwan’s external communications links in any potential attempt at annexing the country. Beijing claims sovereignty over the island and has threatened to seize it by force if necessary.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan government officials told the Financial Times the damaged cable is part of the Trans-Pacific Express Cable System. The subsea internet cable connecting Taiwan with the US west coast is owned by an international consortium. As well as Chunghwa, it includes the US operator AT&T, Japan’s NTT, Korea Telecom and Chinese operators China Telecom and China Unicom.

“Since it was not possible for us to question the captain, we have asked the South Korean authorities to help with the investigation at the ship’s next port of destination,” a Taiwan Coast Guard official said. A Taiwanese national security official said the ship was due to arrive in Pusan over the next few days.

Taiwan’s coastguard and other government officials said tracking data from the ship’s automatic identification system signal and satellite data showed that the Shunxing39 had dragged its anchor at the location where the cable was ruptured.

While a coastguard ship carried out an external inspection of the vessel and established radio contact with the captain, its officials could not board it due to rough weather, and it could not order its seizure for further investigation under international law, because too much time had passed since the incident, officials said.

“This is another case of a very worrying global trend of sabotage against subsea cables,” said a senior Taiwanese national security official. “The ships that are involved in these incidents are typically rundown vessels that have little above-the-board business. This one, too, is in very bad shape. It is similar to the ships that are part of Russia’s ‘shadow fleet,’” he added.

According to ship tracking data seen by the FT, the Shunxing39 had been criss-crossing waters close to Taiwan’s north coast since December 8 at least. The pattern suggested the cable damage was not an “innocent accident”, the official said.

Chinese commercial or fishing vessels have occasionally participated in some of the large military exercises Beijing regularly holds close to Taiwan. Taipei is concerned that such “greyzone” operations, below the threshold of war, will make it harder to defend against aggression that could eventually escalate to an outright attack.

Indonesia has been admitted as a full member of the BRICS bloc of developing economies, the group’s presiding country, Brazil, announced Monday.

Indonesia’s candidacy was endorsed by BRICS leaders in August 2023, according to the foreign ministry of Brazil, which holds the group’s presidency for 2025. However, the world’s fourth most populous nation opted to formally join the bloc only after the formation of its newly elected government last year.

“The Brazilian government welcomes Indonesia’s entry into the BRICS,” the government said in a statement. “With the largest population and economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia shares with other members a commitment to reforming global governance institutions and contributes positively to deepening South-South cooperation.”

Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a written statement Tuesday said that it reflects Indonesia’s increasingly active role in global issues, and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation.

But I also think it’s so interesting how much Democrats — the reason why she’s getting the award is she helped Democrats campaign. They thought she was helpful. You might remember, the Kamala Harris campaign had Liz Cheney out on the road. That was their closing message. If you vote for Kamala Harris, you’re going to have people like Liz Cheney handling our foreign policy. And polling showed that was actually a net negative with people on that campaign.

So Liz Cheney, as awful as her behavior has been in these last few years, she did give Republicans this gift of taking her very unpopular, politically toxic, neocon interventionism and moving it from the Republican Party now firmly into the Democrat Party.

So for that, Republicans can be thankful.

To this day Americans have no idea that the federal agents provoking the riot were uniformed police and government agents. And, the US Capitol Police and DC Metro Police fired unrelenting munitions on the J6 protesters without warning. These actions sparked a riot an hour later.

Oil industry seeks end to climate change lawsuits

The energy companies have petitioned the Supreme Court to review the case that could block state and local governments, including Honolulu, from pursuing state lawsuits that accuse fuel producers of duping the public about climate change.

Energy producers facing a climate lawsuit from the city of Honolulu are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in the case, which could have sweeping implications.

The energy companies have petitioned the Supreme Court to review the case that could block state and local governments, including Honolulu, from pursuing state lawsuits that accuse fuel producers of duping the public about climate change.

President Joe Biden's administration wants the high court to reject the efforts by energy producers and Republican state attorneys general. At issue is whether federal law precludes state law claims seeking redress for injuries allegedly caused by the effects of interstate and international greenhouse-gas emissions on the worldwide climate.

"The question is of substantial importance to one of the country's most critical industries, and it raises profound questions of constitutional structure," the petitioners, Sunoco et al., asked the U.S. Supreme Court in the matter of Sunoco LP v. City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Sunoco and other fuel producers argue the time is right to settle the dispute.

"In light of the enormous legal and practical importance of this case, now is the time to resolve the question presented," attorneys for the plaintiffs wrote. "The Court's intervention is urgently needed to dispel the cloud of uncertainty hanging over one of this Nation's most critical industries, to protect important federal interests in national and economic security, and to prevent wasting untold resources in litigating and adjudicating cases that should be dismissed at the outset."

While the Biden administration opposes the oil and gas companies' efforts, President-elect Donald Trump, on the campaign trail, pledged to stop the "frivolous litigation."

The city and county of Honolulu filed a lawsuit in 2020 accusing oil and gas companies, including Sunoco, Exxon Mobil, BP, Chevron, and Shell, of misleading the public for decades about the dangers of climate change induced by burning fossil fuels.

On Dec. 10, President Biden's Solicitor General, Elizabeth Prelogar, filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in the Honolulu case, as requested by the Supreme Court in June 2024. Prelogar's brief asked the court to deny the defendants’ petition and let the case proceed under Hawaii state law.

In her brief, Prelogar departed from the views of the past Solicitors General under the Trump and Obama administrations. In his brief to the Supreme Court in 2010 in American Electric Power vs. Connecticut, former Obama Acting Solicitor General Neat Katyal wrote, "The problem is not simply that many plaintiffs could bring such claims and that many defendants could be sued. It is also that essentially any potential plaintiff could claim to have been injured by any (or all) of the potential defendants. The medium that transmits injury to potential plaintiffs is literally the Earth’s entire atmosphere…"

The Supreme Court subsequently dismissed the case in American Electric Power vs. Connecticut in a unanimous decision written by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, holding that climate change-related claims are subject to the Environmental Protection Agency and Congress, not the courts.

In 2020, former Trump Solicitor General Jeffrey Wall wrote in a brief regarding Baltimore's climate lawsuit, "Under this Court's precedents, state law can be wholly displaced in 'matters essentially of federal character,' even when 'Congress has not acted affirmatively about the specific question.'"

Prelogar's Dec. 10 brief says the defendants may have a valid argument in favor of federal law since Honolulu is suing over conduct taking place outside of Hawaii’s borders. Prelogar wrote, "To be sure, petitioners may ultimately prevail on their contention that respondents’ claims are barred by the Constitution – specifically, the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Clauses, the Due Process Clause, and federal constitutional structure – to the extent the claims rely on conduct occurring outside Hawaii."

All eyes are now on the Supreme Court for its decision on this matter. Industry observers will be watching closely. The justices are scheduled to conference on the case on Friday, Jan. 10, with a decision to come after on whether or not to review if federal law pre-empts Honolulu’s state law claims over climate change.

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday night made a last-ditch effort to block the release of Special Counsel Jack Smith's closing report on two criminal cases that have since been dismissed.

Trump's legal team was allowed to review the two-volume report, which would present Smith's narrative of the evidence he gathered in the cases. It centers on the classified documents case and Trump's alleged efforts to subvert the results of the 2020 election.

The former president's team asked Attorney General Merrick Garland not to release the report, arguing that the decision should rest with the incoming Trump administration, and claimed that releasing it would illegally interfere with the presidential transition, per Politico.

The attorneys Todd Blanche, who has been nominated for Trump's deputy attorney general, and John Lauro also demanded that Garland fire Smith before he resigns.

“Because Smith has proposed an unlawful course of action, you must countermand his plan and remove him promptly,” the attorneys wrote.

Judge Juan M. Merchan has scheduled the sentencing for Trump's New York case for this Friday, January 10. Trump's legal team has attempted to get the case overturned but instead of doing that, Merchan decided he would hold the sentencing this Friday but also revealed that Trump would not be getting any jail time or even probation. CNN's legal analyst said that decision was strategic on the Judge's part.

“It was a smart move by Judge Merchan to announce in advance that he is going to impose no punishment, and hold the proceeding remotely, because that undermines any effort by Trump’s team to argue in federal court that sentencing imposes some major burden,” said CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig said.

The New York case is a state-level case but it's unlikely that any action will happen on it after Trump is sworn into office. In other words, Judge Merchan is trying to get this sentencing in at the last possible moment in a way that undercuts Trump's legal reasoning for delaying it, i.e. by removing the threat of punishment.

The whole point of this, and the reason Trump's team is trying to stop it, is that once he's sentenced Trump technically becomes a felon. That is effectively the punishment that Judge Merchan is seeking to get in under the wire with this sentencing.

But this scenario also means that Trump's team doesn't have to win the legal battle over overturning the case, he just needs to delay the sentencing for 10 additional days. Once he's sworn in as president, the whole case will freeze and Trump will never be formally declared a felon.

Trump's team has made a pro forma appeal to Judge Merchan to reconsider his ruling by this afternoon. But knowing that the judge is unlikely to change his mind, Trump's team is also filing civil charges against the judge in an attempt to block the sentencing.

The images have been secured as potential evidence and will not be visible to the public while the investigation is pending.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, we received a tip from a Fort Worth resident who informed us that the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth was currently exhibiting a collection called Diaries of Home. The documentary photography includes pictures of naked children and LGBTQ+ content.

The Dallas Express visited the museum and saw several pictures featuring naked children. One photo showed a nude girl jumping on top of a table. Another depicted a naked boy with an unknown liquid substance and his genitals exposed.

Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare called for a criminal investigation.

“There are images on display at this museum that are grossly inappropriate at best. They should be taken down immediately and investigated by law enforcement for any and all potential criminal violations. A New Year's Aurora and SAR Arc

It was a new year, and the sky was doubly red. The new year meant that the Earth had returned to its usual place in its orbit on January 1, a place a few days before its closest approach to the Sun. The first of the two red skyglows, on the left, was a red aurora, complete with vertical rays, caused by a blast from the Sun pushing charged particles into Earth's atmosphere. The second red glow, most prominent on the far right, was possibly a SAR arc caused by a river of charged particles flowing across Earth's atmosphere. Although both appear red, the slight color difference is likely due to the aurora being emitted by both oxygen and nitrogen, whereas the higher SAR arc was possibly emitted more purely by atmospheric oxygen. The featured image was taken on January 1 from near Pieve di Cadore in Italy.

NASA will announce update to Mars sample return plans today

The year 2025 isn't even a week old and NASA is already gearing up for its first big announcement, this one about the agency's ambitious, yet beleaguered, Mars sample return mission.

Today (Jan. 7), NASA's top brass will hold an audio-only press conference to update the public on its Mars sample return program.

The media briefing will begin at 1:00 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), and you'll be able to listen in online via NASA's website.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Nicky Fox, the agency's associate administrator for science missions, will host the Mars exploration briefing.

"The briefing will include NASA's efforts to complete its goals of returning scientifically selected samples from Mars to Earth while lowering cost, risk and mission complexity," NASA officials wrote in a Jan. 3 statement.

NASA's Mars Sample Return program is designed to do just what its name suggests: return pieces of Mars to Earth so scientists can study the Red Planet up close.

To that end, NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars has already collected and cached a bevy of samples since it arrived on the planet in 2021.

"The agency's Mars Sample Return Program has been a major long-term goal of international planetary exploration for more than two decades," NASA wrote in the statement.

"NASA's Perseverance rover is collecting compelling science samples that will help scientists understand the geological history of Mars, the evolution of its climate, and prepare for future human explorers.

The return of the samples also will help NASA's search for signs of ancient life."

But the mission to return those Perseverance Mars rover samples to Earth is at a crossroads.

One plan to return Perseverance's samples to Earth called for a lander to touch down near the rover, use a sophisticated robotic arm (or perhaps robotic drones like NASA's Ingenuity Mars helictopter) to collect the samples from Perserverance and store them in a rocket that would then launch into orbit.

Another spacecraft, provided by the European Space Agency, would then collect the sample capsule for the trip to Earth.

"The bottom line is that $11 billion is too expensive, and not returning samples until 2040 is unacceptably too long," Nelson said of that finding during an April 2024 media call.

China, for example, plans to launch its own sample return mission to Mars in 2028 with the goal of returning those samples to Earth in 2031. So, NASA isn't alone in its race to collect samples of Mars.

Throughout 2024, NASA has worked to revamp its Mars sample return plan into a scenario that would reduce its cost and complexity. Tuesday's media briefing may reveal some of the new thinking that could go into that plan.

Last month, Nelson told reporters at NASA's Kennedy Space Center that the new Mars sample return plan will include more than just NASA centers.

"What’s coming out is by involving industry, and not NASA centers like [the Jet Propulsion Laboratory], combining with others, they're coming out with much more practical (proposals), where they can speed up the time and considerably lower the cost," Spaceflight Now quoted Nelson as saying during the Dec. 18 meeting.

Westinghouse Awarded NASA-DOE Contract to Continue Development of Space Microreactor Concept

Westinghouse Electric Company announced today that NASA, working with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has selected Westinghouse to continue development of a space microreactor design through the Fission Surface Power (FSP) project.

The FSP project is focused on developing concept designs for small, electricity-generating nuclear fission reactors that could provide astronauts a reliable power supply for use on the moon and beyond.

This contract, awarded by Idaho National Laboratory (INL), will build on the successful design work Westinghouse completed during Phase 1 to optimize its contributions to the design of FSP systems and their configuration, and begin testing of critical technology elements.

The continued progress under the FSP project can enable NASA’s goal of a lunar demonstration within the next decade.

“Westinghouse appreciates the opportunity to continue demonstrating its leadership in designing microreactors for space and lunar exploration missions,” said Richard Rademacher, President, Westinghouse Government Services.

“This award reflects our close collaboration with NASA and the progress we’ve made on the FSP program that will enable a strategic capability for the Artemis mission.

We look forward to testing and demonstrating our proprietary microreactor technology in the coming years under this important NASA initiative.”

NASA’s FSP program expands on the efforts of the agency’s Kilopower project to develop affordable fission nuclear power technologies for long-duration stays on planetary surfaces.

Currently, NASA is working with DOE to design a fission power system that would provide up to 40 kilowatts of power – enough to continuously run 30 households for 10 years.

A future lunar demonstration will pave the way for sustainable operations and base camps on the Moon and Mars.

This will be Tuesday from the South Africa and Eastern European time zones eastward across the remainder of Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, etc., to the International Date Line in the mid-Pacific.

The Moon will appear full for about three days around this time, from Sunday evening (and possibly the last part of Sunday morning) into Wednesday morning.

On the night of the full Moon, for most of the continental USA as well as parts of Africa, Canada, and Mexico, the Moon will pass in front of the planet Mars.

The Maine Farmers' Almanac began publishing Native American names for full Moons in the 1930s. Over time these names have become widely known and used.

According to this almanac, as the full Moon in January this is the Wolf Moon, from the packs of wolves heard howling outside the villages amid the cold and deep snows of winter.

European names for this Moon include the Ice Moon, the Old Moon, and (as the full Moon after the winter solstice) the Moon after Yule. Yule was a three to 12-day festival near the winter solstice in pre-Christian Europe.

In the tenth century King Haakon I associated Yule with Christmas as part of the Christianization of Norway, and this association spread throughout Europe.

The exact timing of this pre-Christian celebration is unclear. Some sources now associate Yule with the 12 days of Christmas, so that the Moon after Yule is after Twelfth Night on January 6.

Other sources suggest that Yule is an old name for the month of January, so the Moon after Yule is in February. In the absence of more reliable historic information, I'm going with the full Moon after the winter solstice as the Moon after Yule.

This full Moon corresponds with the start of the 44-day festival Prayag Kumbh Mela, also known as Maha Kumbh.

This Hindu pilgrimage and festival is held every 12 years in the Indian city of Prayagraj at the confluence of three rivers, the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati.

It is expected to draw around 400 million visitors. Similar Kumbh celebrations are held approximately every 12 years at the convergence of three rivers in three other Indian cities, Nashik (upcoming in 2027), Ujjain (in 2028), and Haridwar (in 2033).

In the Hindu calendar, this full Moon is Shakambhari Purnima, the last day in the 8-day Shakambari Navratri holiday that celebrates the goddess Shakambhari.

In the Purnimanta tradition that ends months on the full Moon day, this full Moon is Paush Purnima, the last day of the Hindu month of Paush.

The day after Paush Purnima is the start of the month of Magha, a period of austerity. Bathing in the holy waters of India is an important activity for both Shakambari Navratri and Magha.

This full Moon corresponds with the Thiruvathira, Thiruvathirai, or Arudhra Darisanam festival, celebrated by Hindus in the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

For the Buddhists of Sri Lanka, this is Duruthu Poya, which commemorates Siddhartha Gautama Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka.

In many lunar and lunisolar calendars the months change with the new Moon and full Moons fall in the middle of the lunar month.

This full Moon is in the middle of the 12th and final month of the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. The new Moon on January 29 will be Chinese New Year, the start of the Year of the Snake.

This full Moon is in the middle of Tevet in the Hebrew calendar and Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar. Rajab is one of the four sacred months in which warfare and fighting are forbidden.

As usual, the wearing of suitably celebratory celestial attire is encouraged in honor of the full Moon.

NASA Names Adam Schlesinger as Commercial Lunar Payload Services Project Manager

NASA has selected Adam Schlesinger as manager for CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services).

Schlesinger previously served as the Gateway Program habitation and logistics outpost project lead engineer at Johnson Space Center.

“I am honored and tremendously excited to take on this new role as NASA continues to enable a growing lunar economy while leveraging the entrepreneurial innovation of the commercial space industry,” Schlesinger said.

Schlesinger brings more than 20 years’ experience to NASA human space flight programs.

Prior to supporting Gateway, Mr. Schlesinger managed the Advanced Exploration Systems Avionics and Software Project, leading a multi-center team to develop and advance several innovative technologies that were targeted for future NASA exploration missions.

Mr. Schlesinger also established and led a variety of key public/private partnerships with commercial providers as part of the Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships-2 activities.

Mr. Schlesinger began his NASA career as a co-op in the Avionic Systems Division and has served in multiple positions within the Engineering and Exploration Architecture, Integration, and Science Directorates, each with increasing technical leadership responsibilities.

Mr. Schlesinger earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

“Adam is an outstanding leader and engineer, and I am extremely pleased to announce his selection for this position,” said Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

“His wealth of experience in human spaceflight, commercial partnerships, and the development and operations of deep-space spacecraft will be a huge asset to CLPS.”

Throughout his career, Schlesinger has been recognized for outstanding technical achievements and leadership, including multiple NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals, Rotary National Award for Space Achievement Early Career Stellar Award and Middle Career Stellar Award nominee, JSC Director’s Commendation Award, Advanced Exploration Systems Innovation Award, and NASA Early Career Achievement Medal.

Soil Remediation at White Sands Test Facility

Origins of the 600 Area Off-Site Pile

The NASA White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) is crucial for supporting space exploration and technology development.

Located in New Mexico, it provides a controlled environment for testing and evaluating spacecraft, propulsion systems, and other aerospace technologies.

The facility is instrumental in conducting critical tests such as engine firings, thermal and environmental testing, and materials research.

Its role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of spacecraft and systems makes it a key asset in NASA’s mission to explore space and advance scientific knowledge.

Unfortunately, past practices associated with the execution of its mission adversely impacted soil and groundwater resources.

From June 1974 to December 1979, sludge and soil removed from a domestic and industrial wastewater lagoon was stockpiled on Bureau of Land Management land west of the NASA White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) facility boundary, less than a mile from the lagoon.

When accumulation of material ceased, the sludge/soil debris pile lay dormant with no boundary identification.

In 1993, during a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act field investigation the debris pile was identified and reported to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and designated as Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) 16.

Investigation Summary

Initial investigations were completed at SWMU 16 in 2015 and 2018 to characterize the stockpiled sludge/soil and native soils beneath the stockpile to a depth of 30 feet.

Analysis of soil sample data indicated the contaminants in the pile posed a risk to human health and the environment due to identified concentrations of nitrates, metals, volatile and semi-volatile organics, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and dioxins and furans.

The NMED agreed to the removal and off-site disposal of New Mexico Special Waste in 2021.

Removal, Disposal, Confirmation Sampling

Excavation of the stockpile and the upper 6 inches of native soil was completed in January 2024.

Excavation of native soils extended approximately 10 ft beyond the extent of the pile.

A total of 1,072.7 tons of sludge and soil were disposed at the Corralitos Landfill.

In February 2024, confirmatory soil samples were collected from 38 locations on a 30-foot grid established across SWMU 16, encompassing the location of the removed stockpile and all areas potentially affected by site operations.

These samples were submitted for laboratory chemical analyses to determine if NASA had met is remedial objectives and eliminated the exposure risk to human health and the environment.

Risk Assessment

The results showed that NASA had succeeded. The site was restored.

Results of soil sample analyses did not identify site contaminants remain at the site, and a risk assessment did not identify elevated risk to receptors or to groundwater beneath the site.

NASA concluded that site contaminants have been removed, the risk to human health and the environment are below regulatory targets.

NASA recommended a change in site status from “Requiring Corrective Action” to “Corrective Action Complete without Controls”.

The report of results is currently under review by the NMED.
