EU is Terrified of Free Speech on Elon Musk’s Twitter, MEP Says

Peter Caddle15 Feb 2023

The idea that free speech could spread on Elon Musk’s Twitter is terrifying many within the European Union, an MEP serving in the bloc’s parliament has said.

Tom Vandendriessche, a Flemish nationalist elected representative within the European Parliament, has told Breitbart that the EU’s repeated attacks on Elon Musk and his social media platform Twitter are the result ofthe bloc fearing the impact of free speech.

Senior officials within the union have repeatedly attacked the platform since Musk’s takeover last year, with some commissioners even threatening to ban the platform from the EU should the billionaire refuse to implement the union’s censorship regime.

Such pressure has only increased with the continued implementation of Brussels’ Digital Services Act, which is set to force major social media platforms to implement more measures tackling what the bloc calls “disinformation”, including by working with so-called independent “fact checkers”.

This attempt at radical censorship may not be coming from a position of strength, however, with Vandendriessche telling Breitbart Europe that, in reality, many within the union actually fear the potential impact free speech could have on those in power.

“Social media has broken the control over the information people get to see,” the politician, who is a member of the populist Vlaams Belang party, told Breitbart Europe.

The MEP went on to explain that the availability of “free information is far too dangerous for those in power”, with senior officials in the bloc now desperate to clamp down on online platforms to maintain control.

“That’s why they want to ‘regulate’ social media,” he continued, emphasizing thatEU talk of “hate speech and fake news” is really about people being able to contradict narratives drawn up by those in power, in turn allowing them to doubt the bloc’s “imposed version of reality”.

Ultimately, Vandendriessche says that the EU’s view of censorship is closer to that of the Chinese Communist Party than the views held by those in the United States, with Musk’s takeover of Twitter getting such a hostile reaction from senior Eurocrats due to them perceiving the social media platform as a threat to their power.

“[T]he European Union is importing the Chinese totalitarian communist modelwhere modern technology is used to oppress and disenfranchise citizens,” he said.

“Ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter with the intention of making this the marketplace of ideas again, they have been threatening him,” he continued. “They fear that citizens will be able to speak freely on Twitter.Because they fear being driven from power.”

The latest of these threats appeared to drop last week, with the bloc publicly admonishingTwitter for failing to implement the union’s anti-“disinformation” rules.

Although such a transgression does not come with any penalty as of writing, things are set to change this coming September, when many major social media platforms will begin to face fines of up to six per cent of their global revenue should they not obey EU censorship demands as set out by the Digital Services Act.

It remains ultimately unclear whether or not Musk will abide by the demands of the Union, with Twitter being ultimately slow to implement the EU’s censorship regime despite the billionaire Tech tsar repeatedly affirming to senior officials that he will make the platform abide by the bloc’s rules.

Twitter's Response to Hunter Biden Laptop Story

Former Twitter executives appeared before the House Oversight Committee, testifying there was “no conspiracy” at the company against conservative voices as they discussed Twitter’s response to the New York Post's Hunter Biden laptop story. Anika Collier Navaroli, Twitter’s former U.S. Safety Policy Team senior expert, focused her remarks on the company’s reluctance to censure former President Trump’s rhetoric on the platform in the lead up to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, saying, “Twitter’s leadership bent and broke their own rules in order to protect some of the most dangerous speech on the platform.” A variety of topics were covered, including the FBI’s involvement with Twitter, free speech protections and violations, combating disinformation on social media platforms, and Hunter Biden’s involvement with the Ukrainian company Burisma. close

Trudeau headed to Bahamas for meeting of Caribbean leaders as Haiti crisis deepens

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to depart today for the Bahamas, where members of the Caribbean Community are gathering to discuss regional issues, including a deepening crisis in Haiti.

Trudeau is participating as a special guest at the summit of 20 Caribbean leaders in Nassau, as the group celebrates its 50th anniversary.

His office says the trip will allow leaders to consider political, security and humanitarian assistance to Haitian people and "Haitian-led solutions to the ongoing situation."

The country is embroiled in crisis, with violent gangs jockeying for territory in capital Port-au-Prince and international watchdogs reporting rampant sexual assault, kidnappings and a worsening health emergency.

Haiti's unelected prime minister Ariel Henry, who is expected to participate in the Nassau meeting, has asked for a foreign military intervention – and the United States has suggested that Canada lead one.

But the Canadian government has so far kept its powder dry, instead searching for a "consensus" on the ground and levying economic sanctions against elites accused of supporting gang activity.

Emmanuel Dubourg, Canada's only Haitian-born federal member of Parliament, suggested in an interview that the government is not leaving anything off the table as it considers how to help.

"We are trying our best to have that consensus to have a diplomatic solution," the Liberal MP said.

"But we also heard that the national police is under-armed, and the situation, it's really difficult there. So we are discussing all types of options to help people in Haiti."

Dubourg added that a discussion about Haiti is likely to play into Trudeau's conversations with U.S. President Joe Biden in March, when he is expected to visit north of the border.

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said in French on Tuesday that Canada would continue working with the U.S. and other allies to help improve the situation on the ground.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh also responded to questions about Haiti in French outside the House of Commons, saying that he thinks it's important to work with Haitian people on a way forward rather than "forcing a solution" as a foreign country.

Trudeau was last expected to join the Caribbean leaders at a meeting in February 2020, but cancelled the trip amid criticism of his government's handling of anti-pipeline blockades in Western Canada at the time.

More than two million Canadians travel to the countries represented in the group every year, and Canada's two-way trade with them totalled nearly $6 billion in 2021.

The prime minister is expected to return to Ottawa late Thursday evening.

We basically nuked a town: 3 more chemicals discovered in Ohio train derailment

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) — First News was recently informed of three more chemicals that were on the Norfolk Southern train that derailed in East Palestine just over a week ago — and we are being told that those chemicals are dangerous.

“We basically nuked a town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open,” said Sil Caggiano, a hazardous materials specialist.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sent a letter to Norfolk Southern stating that ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate and isobutylene were also in the rail cars that were derailed, breached and/or on fire.

Caggiano says ethylhexyl acrylate is especially worrisome. He says it’s a carcinogen and contact with it can cause burning and irritation in the skin and eyes. Breathing it in can irritate the nose and throat and cause coughing and shortness of breath.

Isobutylene is also known to cause dizziness and drowsiness when inhaled.

“I was surprised when they quickly told the people they can go back home, but then said if they feel like they want their homes tested they can have them tested. I would’ve far rather they did all the testing,” Caggiano said.

Caggiano says it’s possible some of these chemicals could still be present in homes and on objects until you clean them thoroughly.

“There’s a lot of what ifs, and we’re going to be looking at this thing 5, 10, 15, 20 years down the line and wondering, ‘Gee, cancer clusters could pop up, you know, well water could go bad,” Caggiano said.

Caggiano recommends anyone in the East Palestine area should get a health check-up. Get it on record where your health stands now so that moving forward you’ll have documented any effects possibly related to the train derailment.

Western sanctions bring Russia and India closer – diplomat

The two countries have been deepening economic ties despite the pressure, Ambassador Denis Alipov says

The West’s sanctions on Russia have led to closer trade and economic cooperation between Moscow and New Delhi, according to the Russian ambassador to India, Denis Alipov.

“Talking about the explosive, record growth of our cooperation in the energy field, our oil supplies, it would be appropriate to say that the sanctions that were introduced and expanded against us, in this case, had the opposite effectand became a catalyst for our trade relations,” Alipov told Channel One on Tuesday.

The ambassador suggested that New Delhi “will continue to be interested in maintaining this high level” relationship. “Of course, we are also interested in this… We have a very extensive, comprehensive cooperation, including in the field of economy and trade,” he said.

The Russian diplomat hailed the positive dynamics in the two nations’ cooperation in the construction sector, as well as in petrochemicals, railway, and heavy engineering. The mining industry, agriculture, and information and communication technologies are also examples of strengthening cooperation, he said.

According to Alipov, bilateral trade has been developing dynamically, hitting a record $35 billion. “There has never been such cooperation in the history of Russian-Indian relations,” the envoy stated.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

SEC Chair Gensler proposes rules that would change which crypto firms can custody customer assets

Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Gary Gensler on Wednesday proposed sweeping changes to federal regulations that would expand custody rules to include assets like crypto and require companies to gain or maintain registration in order to hold those customer assets.

The proposed amendments to federal custody rules would “expand the scope” to include any client assets under the custody of an investment advisor. Current federal regulations only include assets like funds or securities, and require investment advisors, like Fidelity or Merrill Lynch, to hold those assets with a federal- or state-chartered bank, with a few highly specific exceptions.

It would be the SEC’s most overt effort to rein in (pick the winners and losers here before CBDC is rolled out-FIFY) even regulated crypto exchanges that have substantial institutional custody programs serving high-net-worth individuals and entities which custody investor assets, like hedge funds or retirement investment managers. The move poses a fresh threat to crypto exchange custody programs, as other federal regulators actively discourage custodians like banks from holding customer crypto assets. The amendments also come as the SEC aggressively accelerates enforcement attempts. While the amendment doesn’t specify crypto companies, Gensler said in a separate statement that “though some crypto trading and lending platforms may claim to custody investors’ crypto, that does not mean they are qualified custodians.”

Under the new rules, in order to custody any client asset — including and specifically crypto — an institution would have to hold the charters, or qualify as a registered broker-dealer, futures commission merchant, or be a certain kind of trust or foreign financial institution. SEC officials said that the proposal would not alter the requirements to be a qualified custodian and that there was nothing precluding state-chartered trust companies, including Coinbase or Gemini, from serving as qualified custodians. The officials emphasized that the proposed amendments did not make a decision on which cryptocurrencies the SEC considered securities. The amended regulation would also require a written agreement between custodians and advisors, expand the “surprise examination” requirements, and enhance recordkeeping rules.

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/15/sec-chair-gensler-crypto-firms-need-to-register-to-custody-assets.html

and same thing applies to the above…ENFORCE your rules..you don't

>>15930 pb 'New' SEC rules target corporate insider trading-but lack any 'teeth' as usual

The SEC had previously sought public feedback on whether crypto-friendly state-chartered trusts, like those in Wyoming, were “qualified custodians.”

“Make no mistake: Today’s rule, the 2009 rule, covers a significant amount of crypto assets,” Gensler said in a statement. “As the release states, ‘most crypto assets are likely to be funds or crypto asset securities covered by the current rule.’ Further, though some crypto trading and lending platforms may claim to custody investors’ crypto, that does not mean they are qualified custodians.”

But Gensler’s proposal seemed to undercut comments from SEC officials, who insisted the moves were designed with “all assets” in mind. The SEC chair alluded to several high-profile crypto bankruptcies in recent months, including those of Celsius, Voyager, and FTX.

Dr. Sabine Hazan on the symbiosis between our Gut Microbiome & Regenerative Farming

Dr. Hazan is a less well known physician/scientist working behind the scenes to better understand the role of gut dysbiosis induced by COVID, being the first scientist to sequence the entire genome of this bioweapon.

As our failing and fracturing institutions of science and medicine begin to collapse around us, I often wonder who will lead us into the new renaissance of healing and medicine. In my opinion, Dr. Hazan is well qualified both intellectually and spiritually to forge that path forward. She is a true warrior!

German Election Do-Over Result Already in Doubt as Hundreds of Postal Ballots Discovered

The result of Berlin’s local elections which saw right-wing parties soar is now reportedly in doubt after hundreds of postal ballots turned up late in one key constituency in the city, in a development that could benefit the left.

<more>

As things stand, the right has romped home in the poll, with both the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) making major gains in the city over the previous, ruled-invalid election which saw a left-wing victory.

However, according to a report by Die Welt, the votes that have turned up in Lichtenberg could shift the balance of power on the left side of the equation in favour of the country’s hardline progressive green party.

https://nypost.com/2023/02/14/scientists-switch-off-autism-using-3-epilepsy-drug-study/

Scientists are reporting a breakthrough discovery: A $3-per-pill epilepsy drug may be used to “switch off” autism symptoms in mice, according to a new peer-reviewed study published Tuesday in Molecular Psychiatry journal.

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental condition that impacts how an estimated 5.4 million (2.2% of) adults — and one in 44 children — in the United States perceives and socializes with others. It is often accompanied by abnormalities such as epilepsy or hyperactivity, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

A team of experts at Germany’s Hector Institute for Translational Brain Research found that the medication lamotrigine — an anti-seizure drug first approved for use in the US in 1994 — was able to curb behavioral and social problems linked to the disorder.

Now, their findings are being hyped as the closest thing yet Apparently, drug treatment in adulthood can alleviate brain cell dysfunction and thus counteract the behavioral abnormalities typical of autism,” lead researcher and cellular biologist Moritz Mall said in a statement. “[This occurs] even after the absence of MYT1L has already impaired brain development during the developmental phase of the organism.”

Lamotrigine, which is sold under the brand name Lamictal, among others, is a medication used to treat epilepsy and stabilize mood in those who suffer from bipolar disorder.

The drug, which typically sells for just under $3 per pill, works by reversing changes to brain cells caused by a genetic mutation. (Cont. in article)

Investigators claim Israeli group meddling in elections worldwide

‘Team Jorge’ reportedly deployed thousands of bots to shift public opinion

A secretive Israeli group allegedly manipulated more than 30 elections worldwide using hacking and state-of-the art disinformation techniques, according to an investigation conducted by an international consortium of journalists.

Several media outlets, including the Guardian, Le Monde, ZDF, Der Spiegel and El Pais looked into a team of contractors known as ‘Team Jorge’, run by Tal Hanan, a 50-year-old former Israeli secret services operative. The latter has denied any wrongdoing.

To expose the group’s alleged clandestine operations, the reporters passed themselves as prospective clients while covertly recording several hours of footage inside the meetings with the unit's members. Hanan allegedly told reporters that his services could be used by both private companies and intelligence agencies, with operations taking place in Europe and Africa, as well as in North, Central and South America.

In a video clip released by The Guardian on Wednesday, Hanan himself appears to boast that his group has completed “33 presidential-level campaigns … 27 of which were successful.” He also reportedly said that he took part in two “major projects” in the US, adding that he does not engage directly in the nation’s politics.

According to the investigation, ‘Team Jorge’ would charge their clients between €6 and €15 million ($6.4–16 million) to interfere in elections.

During the meetings, the team reportedly demonstrated their methods for swaying elections, which included cyber hacking and special operations.

The key tool in the group’s arsenal, however, appears to be a software package called Advanced Impact Media Solutions, or Aims. With its help, the group is believed to be controlling some 30,000 sophisticated bots on various social media platforms.

The team also reportedly claimed that it had planted the required information in legitimate new outlets. Against this backdrop, French BFM TV Channel suspended one of its anchors, Rachid M’Barki, after undercover journalists were reportedly told by one of ‘Team Jorge’ members that the group was behind one report broadcasted by the outlet.

M’Barki himself told Politico that he “used information that [he] received from sources” and that “they did not necessarily follow the usual editorial process.”

#OTD 1898, an explosion sank the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. The explosion was blamed on a mine, contributing to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. Subsequent investigations indicate the explosion was likely caused by a coal bunker fire that ignited the Maine's magazines.

More Nord Stream ‘bombshells’ to come – Seymour Hersh

The legendary reporter slammed the mainstream media for ignoring his story, which pinned the act of sabotage on the US

JournalistSeymour Hersh has promised to reveal more incriminating informationlinking the US to the demolition of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. President Joe Biden ordered the lines destroyed to prevent Germany from resuming the purchase of cheap Russian gas, he claimed.

In a post to his Substack page on Wednesday, Hersh slammed the mainstream media – singling out the New York Times and Washington Post – for refusing to “run a word”on the pipeline story, and for ignoring Russia and China’s calls for an international investigation.

Both papers, he said, published his exposés on the US military’s war crimes in Vietnam, but are now seemingly uninterested in “national security or matters of war and peace.”

Nord Stream 1 and 2, which connected Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea, were damaged in a series of underwater explosions last September. Hersh, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, released a report last week blaming the US for the attack and detailing how the Biden administration and the CIA planned the operation. The White House dismissed the allegation as “utterly false and complete fiction.”

The article backed up Moscow’s repeated assertions that the US carried out the strike in order to prevent rapprochement between Russia and Germany, while making Berlin dependent on more expensive American liquefied natural gas.

Germany halted certification of Nord Stream 2 in the days before Russian troops entered Ukraine, and EU sanctions throttled the flow of gas through Nord Stream 1 since late summer by impeding vital repairs. However, Hersh told Germany’s Berliner Zeitung newspaper on Tuesday that the Biden administration feared Berlin would lift these sanctions and resume gas transit as temperatures dropped over the winter.

“The President of the United States would rather see Germany freeze than [see] Germany possibly stop supporting Ukraine,”he asserted.

“There may be more to learn about Joe Biden’s decision to prevent the German government from having second thoughts about the lack of cheap gas this winter,” Hersh wrote on Wednesday. “Stay tuned,” he said. “We are only on first base…”

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is spearheading the effort to hold publicly funded medical facilities accountable for withholding lifesaving care, including as organ transplants, from people who are not immunized.

On Tuesday, Paul (R-Ky.) presented legislation that would prevent government funds from going to hospitals that have turned away patients because of their COVID-19 vaccination status. Additionally, it would safeguard patients’ freedom to choose their own healthcare without suffering consequences.

“No American should be denied access to critical care based on a personal medical decision, yet tragically, many hospitals and other medical facilities continue to discriminate against those unvaccinated for COVID-19,” Paul said. “The COVID-19 Vaccination Non-Discrimination Act will protect the rights of vulnerable patients to make their own health care choices and ensure that federal taxpayer dollars do not support facilities that turn away patients based on their COVID-19 vaccination status.”

The American Medical Association (AMA) had advised physicians to continue treating patients regardless of their level of COVID-19 immunization, according to Paul’s office. There have been cases around the country, though, that shows health care providers who are getting taxpayer funding acting in the other way.

There was an incident in which a girl from North Carolina had been turned away by Duke University Hospital for a kidney transplant because of her vaccination status. The patient contended that since she previously had the virus, she was immune by default.

Officials from Duke Health stated that while they would refrain from commenting on specific patient cases, they would like to express their sympathy to all families dealing with a serious illness in a loved one. Officials also said that the health system is “committed to making organ transplant accessible to as many eligible patients as possible.”

US training Ukraine to conserve ammunition

As Western stockpiles dwindle, Kiev’s forces need to ration artillery rounds, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned

The US and its European allies are training Ukrainian troops to use less artillery ammunition, American Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters on Tuesday. Kiev has received millions of shells from the West, leaving NATO stockpiles depleted.

We’re working with the Ukrainian soldiers in various places throughout Europeto emphasize additional training on maneuver,”Austin said after a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. “As they place more emphasis on maneuver… there’s a good chance that they’ll require less artillery munitions, but that’s left to be seen.”

Fighting in and around the Russian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk has been defined by grinding artillery duels, and Russia has held a firepower advantage since the conflict began. The Ukrainian side is currently firing between 5,000 and 6,000 shells per day, Norwegian arms industry executive Morten Brandtzaeg estimated last week. Assessments of Russian fire have varied hugely from anywhere between 5,000 and 60,000 artillery rounds per day.

The US alone has given Kiev’s forces more than a million 155 millimeter artillery rounds, and 160 M777 howitzers with which to fire them. Washington has donated an additional 491,000 rounds of other calibers, and has reportedly raided its stockpiles in Israel and South Korea to keep the shells flowing.

“In terms of munitions, this has been a tough fight throughout,” Austin said. “We're going to do everything we can, working with our international partners, to ensure that we get them as much ammunition as quickly as possible.”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Monday for the military bloc’s members to “ramp up” their munitions production to keep pace with the “enormous amount of ammunition” consumed by Ukraine, after months of media reports suggested that European and American stockpiles are nearly depleted.

The US Army has already planned to increase its monthly production of 155mm shells from 14,000 to 20,000 this spring, stillonly enough for four days of firing. France and Australia agreed last month to jointly manufacture 155mm ammunition for Ukraine, although neither state said how many shells will be made per month, or when production will begin.

German political party wants U.S. troops kicked out over allegedly blowing up Nord Stream pipeline

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/german-political-party-wants-u-s-troops-kicked-out-over-allededly-blowing-up-nord-stream/article_ff4c8098-abaa-11ed-a791-0782182394f8.html

Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party wants U.S. troops out of Germany if the report is accurate that the US blew up the Nord Stream pipeline. The AfD Co-chairman Tino Chrupalla wants an investigation into the allegations made by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh.

“As the American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh claims to have learned from a source involved in the operational planning, the United States of America is said to have planned the demolition of Nord Stream and carried it out jointly with Norway,” said Chrupalla at a press conference. Chrupalla not only called for an investigation of Hersh’s report but, if true, “take dramatic action” by expelling U.S. troops from Germany. “The Pulitzer Prize winner’s suspicions must be investigated,” said Chrupalla. “Has NATO’s leading power carried out an attack on our country’s vital critical infrastructure in European waters? Then one would have to question whether the alliance guarantees security in Europe or rather endangers it. The consequence would be the withdrawal of all U.S. troops.” According to Hersh, President Joe Biden’s administration began to plan an attack on the Nord Stream pipeline in 2021. The CIA and U.S. Navy diving experts planted the C4 on the pipeline. Three months later, the Norwegian Air Force dropped a buoy to explode the C4 using “a sophisticated sonar signal.” READ MORE Veteran journalist claims US bombed underwater Nord Stream pipelines. Hersh’s report talked about the internal debate between the White House, State Department, Armed Forces, and the intelligence community, with officials warning of “catastrophic consequences” if the U.S. got caught sabotaging the pipeline.

One source told Hersh that “this is not kiddie stuff” and if traced back to the U.S. “it’s an act of war.”

In the past, the AfD and the Left Party (LP) have questioned the possible role the U.S. could have played in blowing up the pipeline. LP MP Sevim Dagdelen said there are “ample reasons” why the U.S. would be involved, as Biden said if Russia attacked Ukraine, he would “end” the pipeline. Another LP MP Sahra Wagenknecht posted a link to Hersch’s story on Twitter and said that “while the German federal government invokes transatlantic friendship and follows the USA uncritically, the U.S. government ensure that the Nord Stream pipelines were blown up, as Pulitzer Prize winner Hersh has meticulously researched. Whose interest does the federal government represent?” The AfD wants another investigation into what German officials knew before the attack by creating a parliamentary investigative committee. “All the open questions must now be answered by investigative committees,” said Chrupalla. “The Bundestag has a right to know what knowledge the federal government has. Could government officials have been privy to the planning of the attack? All the findings of national authorities must flow together in the European Parliament. The European states must not put up with such violent interference. They are even less allowed to participate in it.”

OP-ED - Rachel Marsden: ‘Silence around new Nord Stream explosion reporting is disconcerting’

Hartford Courant Feb 15, 2023

https://www.courant.com/opinion/op-ed/hc-op-marsden-nordstream-explosion-reporting-20230215-belr2mixsjcprltp2m4rgutmia-story.html

PARIS — Pulitzer Prize and five-time Polk Award winning American journalist Seymour Hersh, who has spent a career destroying government narratives on everything from the cover-up of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam and the secret bombing of Cambodia to misbehavior of U.S. guards at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison during the US-led Iraq War, now paints the picture of a terrorist act – not against an enemy of Washington, but against one of its closest allies: the European Union. On Sept. 26, 2022, a series of explosions ripped through Europe’s economic lifelines: the Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines running from Russia to Germany. At that point, Europe had sanctioned its own gas supply from Russia in a misguided effort to curtail Russia’s revenues, but there was always a chance that Europe could drop their sanctions and resume the supply flow. That thought clearly rubbed the Biden administration the wrong way. On Feb. 7, 2022, even before the conflict in Ukraine went red hot, Biden said that the U.S. would “bring an end” to Nord Stream 2 if Russia engaged militarily in Ukraine. He confidently spoke the words while standing right next to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose country was most heavily dependent on gas from Russia as Europe’s primary economic engine. Now Hersh, citing backroom sources, suggests that Scholz didn’t object. Biden’s remarks echoed those of Victoria Nuland, State Department Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs (and previously for European and Eurasian Affairs): “If Russia invades Ukraine, one way or another Nord Stream 2 will not move forward.” Nuland said. Hersh describes a U.S.-led plan, concocted by the Biden administration, CIA, and Pentagon officials, around December 2021 and early 2022, for Navy divers to plant explosives near the pipelines while using last summer’s NATO exercise, BALTOPS 22, as cover. The blowup would later be triggered remotely, adding that there was dissent within the CIA and State Department, with some cautioning against a “political nightmare” if the clandestine plan ever came to light. Norwegian secret services and military were also implicated in the plan, he says, notably in site selection and placement of the explosives. Oslo was also allegedly used by Washington to run interference with neighboring Sweden and Denmark to ensure that eyebrows wouldn’t be raised in the event that divers were spotted where they normally shouldn’t be off the coast of these countries. But why would Norway even care to get involved? Oslo had already proven itself to a reliable anti-Russian ally. It had recently allowed Washington to place a radar station in Norway. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko expressed concern last April “over the continuing construction of the radar station in the immediate vicinity of the Russian border.” Hersh says that Norway, like Washington, also had designs on selling their own gas to the rest of Europe, which cheap Russian gas had previously prevented them from doing. And how exactly has that turned out for both countries? Norway’s gas revenues last year were estimated to have jumped from $27 billion in 2021 to $109 billion as a result of increased sales to Europe, to the point where Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has even accused Norway of war profiteering over that windfall.

Last October, French President Emmanuel Macron also chastised the U.S. and Norway for making “superprofits” from gas sales to Europe. Macron also pointed out that “American gas is 3-4 times cheaper on the domestic market than the price [of LNG] at which they offer it to Europeans,” echoing Germany’s economy minister, Robert Habeck, who has pointed out that “some countries, including friendly ones, sometimes achieve astronomical prices [for their gas],” in reference to the problem.

What’s disturbing, however, is the lack of discussion and debate around the reporting, whether it’s for fear of harming Western unity or of playing into Russia’s hands by evoking a narrative other than, “Russia/Putin bad.” There’s a troubling lack of interest amid the Ukraine conflict in questioning U.S. and allied government actions which hasn’t been the case in previous conflicts. How convenient that avoiding questions of accountability also lets the most powerful off the hook.–

The Justice Department has informed lawyers for at least one witness that it will not bring charges against Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz after a years-long federal sex-trafficking investigation, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Senior officials reached out to lawyers for at least one witness on Wednesday, the source tells CNN, to inform them of the decision not to prosecute Gaetz.

The final decision was made by Department of Justice leadership after investigators recommended against charges last year.
