This unusual sky was both familiar and unfamiliar. The photographer's mission was to capture the arch of the familiar central band of our Milky Way Galaxy over a picturesque medieval manor. The surprise was that on this January evening, the foreground sky was found glowing in a beautiful but unfamiliar manner. The striped bands are called airglow and they result from air high in Earth's atmosphere being excited by the Sun's light and emitting a faint light of its own. The bands cross the entire sky – their curved appearance is due to the extremely wide angle of the camera lens. In the foreground lies Château de Losse in southwest France. Other familiar sky delights dot the distant background including the bright white star Sirius, the orange planet Mars, the blue Pleiades star cluster, the red California Nebula, and, on the far right, the extended Andromeda Galaxy. The initial mission was also successful: across the top of the frame is the arching band of our Milky Way.

Justice Department won't charge Gaetz in sex-trafficking probe, report

The Justice Department on Wednesday reportedly decided to not charge Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz with any crimes after a years-long sex-trafficking probe.

The federal agency told the lawyers of one witness that it will not bring charges against the congressman, a person familiar with the matter told CNN.

The decision comes after prosecutors in September recommended not charging Gaetz last year over concerns about witness credibility.

HF 1716 presented Monday to the Committee on Commerce Finance and Policy says that:

"After January 1, 2025, a new ice resurfacing machine sold, offered for sale, or distributed in or into Minnesota must be powered solely by electricity."

The law would go into effect after being passed.

In a self-published investigative report, Seymour Hersh, argues that Washington was behind the “act of war,”

The U.S., with the help of Norway, sabotaged the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline between Russia and Germany in a covert operation last September, according to a report by renowned but controversial American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, published Feb. 8 on his Substack page. The White House has categorically denied Hersh’s claim as “false, a complete fiction.” The CIA also responded to the reporter’s request for comment in no uncertain terms: “This claim is completely and utterly false.” The original pipeline, Nord Stream 1, went into service in 2011. A second pipeline, Nord Stream 2, had just been completed in 2022, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Combined, the two pipelines would provide Germany with more than half of their gas needs. Nord Stream AG, the holding company that runs the pipeline is 51-percent controlled by Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom, the rest by four European energy companies. The pipeline has been a source of controversy since its inception. The Trump administration had imposed sanctions on companies working to build Nord Stream 2, and the Biden Administration reluctantly removed those sanction in 2021. On Sept. 26, 2022, multiple ruptures in both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines were detected, with methane gas bubbling up to the surface of the Baltic Sea.

How Hersh says it was done

The details of Hersh’s report read like the treatment for an action thriller. The original plan was supposedly to blow up the pipeline within days of concluding the BALOPS 22 exercises. The explosive charges, placed by specially trained divers, would be detonated by remote control. At the last minute, Biden wanted the possibility of setting off the charges at a much later date. The extended time frame risked having the charges detonated inadvertently by underwater activity. Roughly two months after the charges were first placed on the pipeline, according to Hersh’s reconstruction, Biden gave the green light to blow up the pipeline. On Sept. 26, a Norwegian Navy P8 surveillance plane made a seemingly routine flight and dropped a sonar buoy. The buoy would emit a sequence of unique low frequency tonal sounds that would be recognized by a timing device and, after a pre-set hours of delay, trigger the explosives. The signal spread underwater, initially to Nord Stream 2 and then on to Nord Stream 1.

Cui bono?

While it must be emphasized that Hersh’s account is based entirely on a single unnamed source – which does not meet basic journalistic standards and perhaps accounted for the fact that he didn’t publish it in any major newspaper – the report’s plausibility is hard to overlook. This is especially true when considering who is to gain. If Germany is forced to look for other sources of natural gas, then two of the largest exporters of natural gas ready to fill the shortfall are Norway and the U.S. Indeed, in 2022 Norway provided 33 percent of Germany’s natural gas needs, replacing Russia as the largest supplier of gas to Germany. The previous year, imports from Norway accounted for just under 20 percent of Germany’s supply. In January of this year, the first U.S. tanker carrying liquified natural gas (LNG) arrived in Germany. U.S.-produced LNG, which is more expensive than the gas Germany had been receiving from Russia, will now make up an increasing portion of Germany’s energy mix.

Pipelines as spying platforms

Apart from economic incentives to bringing an end to gas flowing from Russia, there is also a tactical consideration. Pipelines nowadays are often used to spy on other countries, and Russian has long been at the forefront of such activities. Andrii Ryzhenko, a former officer in the Ukrainian Navy and a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, has written extensively on the efforts of the Main Directorate of Deep Sea Research (GUGI), a highly secret Russian military unit, and Moscow’s pursuit of Russian national interests in the underwater domain, particularly in surveillance of NATOs communications cables. For security reasons, gas pipelines have specially designated sonars which ensure safety in the vicinity. “However, it is very easy and comparatively inexpensive to connect aside lines composed of a number of sonars for military purposes,” he writes. “Using facts of the shallow depths of the Baltic Sea and the short distances from the Nord Stream to the coasts of neighboring countries and to the critically important Åland Islands, Gotland and Bornholm, Russia can deploy a passive underwater surveillance system in a relatively short period of time at the base of several lines.”

(EAST PALESTINE, Ohio) – Trespassing and resisting arrest charges were dismissed Wednesday against NewsNation reporter Evan Lambert, who was arrested at a press conference last week about the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment.

"My office has reviewed the relevant video and documentary evidence, and is dismissing the charges against Evan Lambert as unsupported by sufficient evidence," Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Wednesday.

"While journalists could conceivably be subject to criminal charges for trespassing in some situations, this incident is not one of them. The reporter was lawfully present at a press conference called by the Governor of the state. His conduct was consistent with the purpose of the event and his role as a reporter," Yost added.

Lambert had been charged with resisting arrest, a second-degree misdemeanor, and criminal trespassing, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

According to NewsNation, Lambert was doing a live report while Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine spoke at a press conference about the cleanup efforts following a train derailment in a small Ohio village, prompting law enforcement to ask Lambert to be quiet. NewsNation said that Lambert concluded the segment before being asked to leave.

Multiple videos from the incident show officers arresting and subsequently forcibly removing Lambert.

"I’m still processing what was a traumatic event for me, in the context of a time where we are hyper aware of how frequently some police interactions with people of color can end in much worse circumstances. That is not lost on me," Lambert said in a statement.

He continued, "At the same time, as a journalist who has spent more than a decade covering crime, courts and more recently federal law enforcement, I have great respect for the officers who do their jobs each day with integrity, civil rights, justice and safety at the core of their mission."

DeWine's office said he did not see the incident but heard a "disagreement," according to his press secretary.

"Regardless of the intent, arresting a journalist reporting at a press conference is a serious matter," Yost said. "Ohio protects a free press under its constitution, and state officials should remember to exercise a heightened level of restraint in using arrest powers."

In August of 2018 Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin announced that his office had executed a 95$ million contract with Dominion Voting Systems for a new electronic voting system in the state. Two months later, the State Procurement Office rescinded the Dominion contract due to “flaws” in the bidding process. ES&S, the largest US manufacturer of voting equipment in America which was also competing for the contract, had alleged that the standards contained in Ardoin’s bid request were ones that only Dominion’s system could meet. Paula Tregere, Louisiana’s chief procurement officer, ruled that it was in the “best interest of the State to rescind the award made to Dominion Voting Systems.”

Three years later Ardoin tried a second time to consummate a contract for new voting machines. On February 24, 2021, he stood before the East Baton Rouge Parish Republican Women (EBRRW) to discuss election issues. Between emphatic declarations about how “great” we are doing on elections in Louisiana, Ardoin made the following public commitments:

“What else are we asking for in the RFP (Request For Proposal)? We want to know who you do business with. We want to know if you’re doing business with a foreign country. We want to know if you have foreign ownership. We want to know who your Board of Directors is. We want to know who owns 10% or more of your company. We want to know who you are, because that’s going to determine, through an independent evaluation committee, who we do business with.”

Ardoin also promised that any RFP he recommends for approval will require any election vendor to provide “the proprietary code to their system. We require that. It is absolute.” (Emphasis mine). Finally, Ardoin committed to subject any prospective Louisiana election system to “expert testing” before recommending approval. (Emphasis mine).

Despite his public commitment to transparency on February 24, a week later, on March 3, 2021 Ardoin was forced to ditch the process a second time due to multiple complaints from competing election technology companies alleging similar irregularities in the bid process as in 2018: Ardoin’s bid was structured in a way that favored Dominion. Sen. Sharon Hewitt, Republican Chair of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, also weighed in that “history is repeating itself.” It is at least plausible that Ardoin, for the second time in three (3) years, had geared the bid process toward Dominion.

Ardoin has steadfastly denied any impropriety, and insists that the derailment of his efforts to bring new machines to Louisiana is based upon “misinformation and disinformation”, terms usually used by Leftists who are the ones actually engaged in it.

Anybody who follows politics and elections in Louisiana even peripherally knows that Louisiana voters are highly skeptical of Dominion Voting Systems. Louisiana citizens simply do not trust them and have made it clear to Ardoin that they have no confidence in Dominion’s capacity or inclination to secure the integrity of the most fundamental right we have, our vote. Yet on two separate occasions, Ardoin has been accused of structuring lucrative election system contracts in Dominion’s favor. And on both occasions, he has been publicly castigated for it and has been forced to suspend the bid process.

Now, for the third time in 5 years, Ardoin is poised to make yet another recommendation for a new voting system. What can we expect? The fact is that all electronic voting systems are vulnerable to remote manipulation and vote switching, as every reputable cyber security expert in the world has affirmed. But if voting systems in general cause suspicion among Louisiana voters, Dominion is viewed even more unfavorably.

The Ukrainian leader is “feeding his people into carnage,” MEP Mick Wallace said

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his Western supporters are not interested in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Russia, Mick Wallace, a member of the European Parliament from Ireland, said on Wednesday.

“Zelensky has been making the rounds begging for more weapons, but not one word to say about peace. How many of his own people must he conscript and feed into the carnage before he sits down to negotiations?” Wallace said during a parliamentary debate.

The MEP described Russia’s military operation as illegal and “unforgivable,” and said that the conflict has devastated Ukraine. “Also unforgivable is how willing Western leaders are to ensure this becomes a war without end,” Wallace argued.

Instead of calls for ceasefires, dialogue, and peace talks, we are deepening Western involvement in the war with no apparent concern for the repercussions.

Wallace warned that calls for Ukraine to seize Crimea would “lead to a possible breakout of nuclear war” and would only galvanize the resolve of the Russian people to defend the peninsula. Crimea, which is predominantly populated by ethnic Russians, voted to leave Ukraine and join Russia shortly after the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev.

Speaking to reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reiterated that Washington would support Ukraine “for as long as it takes.”

Russia sent its troops to Ukraine nearly a year ago, citing the need to protect the people of Donbass and Kiev’s failure to implement the 2014-2015 Minsk agreements. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a recent interview that the US and its allies had “blocked” negotiations between Moscow and Kiev when they broke down prior to April 2022.

Ukrainian officials have since said that peace can only be achieved if Moscow surrenders Crimea and other former Ukrainian territories. The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, together with Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions, joined Russia after holding referendums in September. Moscow has maintained that Kiev’s demands to return the territories are a non-starter.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in late December that the Ukrainian leadership was incapable of negotiating and was dominated by “rampant Russophobes.”

US Informs Ukraine It Doesn't Have Enough Long-Range Missiles To Send

Ukraine has been urging for the US to immediately transfer Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMs), which have a range of up to 190 miles, capable of being fired from the HIMARS rocket systems, which the Ukrainians already possess.

But now the US is informing the Ukrainians that it doesn't have enough of these long range missiles even if it were willing to provide them. Citing four US officials, Politico writes that "Transferring ATACMS to the battlefield in eastern Europe would dwindle America’s stockpiles and harm the U.S. military’s readiness for a future fight, the people said."

An alternative that Ukrainian is considering seeking is to ask Washington to approve purchase of ATACMs from US allies which currently possess them, which includes Poland, Romania, Greece, Turkey, South Korea, Qatar and Bahrain.

Another main reason the US has cited in the past for not wanting to introduce ATACMs is the desire to avoid severe escalation with Russia in providing longer-range rockets.

But it looks like low Pentagon stockpiles is fast becoming the number one reason for holding back, with one US official referencing "a desire to maintain a certain level of munitions in U.S. stockpiles."

"With any package, we always consider our readiness and our own stocks while providing Ukraine what it needs on the battlefield," a senior DoD official said. "There are other ways of providing Ukraine with the capabilities it needs to strike the targets."

In prior months, as reports of a potential ATACMS transfer emerged, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that if longer range munitions are supplied, the US would become "a party to the conflict".

She stressed at the time that Russia "reserves the right to defend its territory" - given especially that longer range rockets could potentially be used to strike deep inside Russia, something that appears to have already happened on a handful of occasions with drones.

Meanwhile, a small handful of Congressional Republicans have been increasingly highlighting the issue of the US needing to prioritize its own defense readiness first, instead of handing essential advanced arms over to foreign countries while risking needless escalation with a nuclear-armed superpower.

Michigan Democrats are looking to expedite new gun control laws after the mass shooting at Michigan State University.

Democrats won the two state legislatures in the 2022 midterm elections, giving them control of the three major seats of power in the state. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) won reelection as well.

The party now has the opportunity to push through gun control legislation that has been stonewalled by hesitant Republicans. Monday’s mass shooting at Michigan State University gives them an opportunity to hurry the legislation through the legislature.

“We’re going to try to move faster. After years of not getting an inch, now we’re making real plans,” Democratic state Sen. Rosemary Bayer told Politico.

“Some of the legislation we have goes back 10 years,” she added. “We just haven’t been able to get any traction to do anything.”

She went on to give a schedule of the new legislation, but she said the party should act earlier.

“We had a schedule that we’re trying to move up even more. We were targeting right after the first week of April, that’s what we were planning for, but we want to respond quicker,” Bayer said.

All the usual suspects are calling for more gun control.

The left uses tragedy to try to take away people’s rights. It’s disgusting.

JD Vance drags leftist FCC commissioner nominee Gigi Sohn over her past extremist remarks

Republican lawmakers held President Joe Biden's leftist nominee for the Federal Communications Commission to task this week for woke, inflammatory, and censorious remarks she has made in the past, putting her ability to govern fairly or competently in question.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) scrutinized Sohn for several remarks she has made, in some cases swapping out the racial groups she saw fit to denigrate for others in order to ascertain whether they were similarly unacceptable in slightly altered contexts.

What is the background?

Biden nominated Sohn in October 2021 to fill a commissioner seat on the FCC. Owing to sustained opposition by Republicans and underwhelming support from Democrats, Sohn's nomination expired, so Biden had to re-nominate her on Jan. 4, 2022.

TheBlaze previously reported that the White House, which "continues to strongly back" Sohn, expects her to execute its so-called "digital equity" agenda.

Republicans recognize that Sohn, who has a history of criticizing conservative and right-leaning news outlets, may approach her responsibilities with a strong bias. This could prove deleterious, as the FCC is a powerful regulatory arm of the state, granted oversight over technology, telecommunications, and media.

Sohn appeared Tuesday before the Senate Commerce Committee for her third confirmation hearing, 476 days after her initial nomination.

Vance noted in his preamble that while he agreed with some of Sohn's positions, of special concern to him was her participation in "this weird racialization of American political rhetoric in the last few years."

"There's been this weird trend in certain corners of American politics to be very, very racialized and even to criticize explicit racial groups," said Vance.

The senator from Ohio then provided a number of Sohn's tweets, albeit in modified forms to highlight their partisan and identitarian nature.

"And I quote, 'President Obama is a raggedy black supremacist president and his cowardly enablers would rather kill everybody than stop killing white people,'" said Vance. "Do you think a person that said that should be appointed or confirmed to the FCC?"

When Sohn responded by suggesting more context was needed, Vance added, "I think clearly a person who said that should not be appointed to the FCC, and in fact, you retweeted the exact same thing, only with President Trump instead of President Obama, and the races reversed."

As Vance indicated, in June 2020, Sohn retweeted a post from actress Issa Rae, which read, "Your raggedy white supremacist president and his cowardly enablers would rather kill everybody than stop killing black people."

Again, Vance gauged whether the racially charged rhetoric Sohn has dealt in would be acceptable, first, if the races were changed, and second, for a prospective FCC commissioner to be on record as writing.

"'Angry black woman. Not a good look, Judge Brown Jackson,'" said Vance. "Would a person who tweeted that pejoratively be deserving of the position that you're seeking?"

Sohn recognized the rhetoric as her own, only slightly changed, and claimed it had nothing to do with the FCC role she is seeking.

GOP Reps Demand FBI Probe Biden Appointee Linked To Alleged Chinese Communist Orgs

Republican members of Congress led by Texas Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas are urging the FBI to investigate Dominic Ng, President Joe Biden’s appointee to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, according to a letter obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Ng is a current and former member of two alleged Chinese intelligence front groups, a DCNF investigation recently found.

“I request the FBI investigate and provide a report to Congress on the extent of Mr. Ng’s knowledge of sensitive information, as well as any potential violations of The Espionage Act,” the letter to the FBI states.

Republican members of Congress are calling on federal authorities to investigate an alleged Chinese Communist Party (CCP) front group member whom President Joe Biden appointed to represent U.S. business interests in Asia, according to a letter obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Republican Reps. Lance Gooden and Keith Self of Texas, Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Ben Cline of Virginia and Doug LaMalfa of California are urging FBI Director Christopher Wray to investigate Dominic Ng, CEO of East West Bank, after a recent DCNF investigation revealed that the banker is a current and former member of two organizations which multiple Chinese intelligence analysts have identified as front groups for a Chinese intelligence agency. Ng’s CCP ties first came under scrutiny in April 2022, when Biden appointed the banker to a one-year position representing the U.S. on the Business Advisory Council of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) just over a year after Ng had donated $100,000 to the Biden Victory Fund and $35,500 to the Democratic National Committee in 2020.

“We request the FBI investigate and provide a report to Congress on the extent of Mr. Ng’s knowledge of sensitive information, as well as any potential violations of The Espionage Act,” the letter to the FBI states.

“China has proved themselves as our greatest adversary and foreign competitor, and yet our leaders continuously jeopardize U.S. national security by allowing the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to infiltrate our third-party sector and federal government,” the letter states. “This lack of scrutiny should be promptly evaluated, and the Biden Administration should take immediate steps to ensure blunders like this will not happen again.”

“These are incredibly troubling disclosures,” Tiffany told the DCNF. “The FBI ought to be taking a very serious look at them.”

Ng, East West Bank, APEC, the White House and the FBI did not respond immediately to the DCNF’s request for comment.

German Election Do-Over Result Already in Doubt as Hundreds of Postal Ballots Discovered

The result of Berlin’s local elections which saw right-wing parties soar is now reportedly in doubt after hundreds of postal ballots turned up late in one key constituency in the city, in a development that could benefit the left.

Around 450 ballots are said to have turned up in the Lichtenberg district of Berlin, with reports indicating that the few hundred extra ballots could put the overall result of the capital city’s elections in doubt.

It is far from the first time discrepancies have arisen during an election in the German capital, with last week’s local elections only taking place due to the last poll in 2021 being deemed invalid due to the sheer number of discrepancies during the day of the vote.

Now problems are again emerging, with multiple outlets reporting that a large number of ballots have been discovered in one district in the city which when counted have the possibility of substantially changing the election result.

The votes are thought to have arrived at the counting centre very late, meaning that they were missed during the initial count, though the theory is presently speculative, with an investigation into the matter now reportedly being underway.

As things stand, the right has romped home in the poll, with both the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) making major gains in the city over the previous, ruled-invalid election which saw a left-wing victory.

However, according to a report by Die Welt, the votes that have turned up in Lichtenberg could shift the balance of power on the left side of the equation in favour of the country’s hardline progressive green party.

Under the current result, both the Greens and the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) finished a distant joint second behind the CDU, with the votes in theory granting either party the possibility of winning an extra seat, and increasing their influence in the city’s legislature.

Die Welt has since reported that the SPD may have done just that, with officials from the district reportedly saying that the formerly lagging SPD has now tied the result of the formerly unrivalled CDU in the constituency, with it now being unclear what party will end up with the constituency’s seat.

A federal judge issued an injunction blocking enforcement of New York’s “Hateful Conduct Law” seeking to regulate “hate speech” on social media platforms, ruling that the law is a violation of the First Amendment, which prevents the U.S. government from regulating the speech of its citizens.

In a ruling issued on Tuesday, US District Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, Andrew L. Carter Jr., sided with legal blogger Eugene Volokh and the free speech-friendly video platform Rumble in their challenge to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s “Hateful Conduct

“The Hateful Conduct Law both compels social media networks to speak about the contours of hate speech and chills the constitutionally protected speech of social media users, without articulating a compelling governmental interest or ensuring that the law is narrowly tailored to that goal,” said Judge Carter Jr. in his ruling.

The law, according to Judge Carter, conflicts with the United States’ “national commitment to the free expression of speech, even where that speech is offensive or repugnant.”

“The law is clearly aimed at regulating speech. Social media websites are publishers and curators of speech, and their users are engaged in speech by writing, posting, and creating content. Although the law ostensibly is aimed at social media networks, it fundamentally implicates the speech of the networks’ users by mandating a policy and mechanism by which users can complain about other users’ protected speech.”

New York’s “Hateful Conduct Law” shares similarities with California’s law requiring social media platforms to report their policies on hate speech, extremism and disinformation to the state attorney general twice a year. The bill was signed into law by California governor Gavin Newsom last year.

4 Russian warplanes intercepted near Alaska by US jets

U.S. fighter jet pilots intercepted four Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska on Monday in what NORAD described as a “routine” encounter.

The Russian warplanes were operating somewhere in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone, a large swath of closely-monitored airspace off the coast of the state, according to a statement from NORAD. The aircraft never entered U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace.

NORAD said similar Russian activity “occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat, nor is the activity seen as provocative.” This latest instance also was not related to the multiple unidentified objects shot down in North American airspace in recent days, according to the statement.

“NORAD had anticipated this Russian activity and, as a result of our planning, was prepared to intercept it,” the statement said.

An interception occurs when one aircraft moves next to another to identify it and establish communications. NORAD said that it “routinely monitors foreign aircraft movements and as necessary, escorts them from the ADIZ.”

The four Russian aircraft included SU-35 fighter jets and TU-95 BEAR-H strategic bombers, but it is unclear how many of each. They were intercepted by two F-16 fighters from NORAD, which were supported by two F-35A fighters, an E-3 Sentry with powerful radar, and two KC-135 Stratotanker refueling planes.

In 2007, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered strategic bomber planes to make long-range patrols on a regular basis for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since then, the average year has seen about six-to-seven interceptions of Russian military aircraft in the North American ADIZ, according to NORAD.

Two Russian bombers were intercepted in the Alaskan ADIZ in October. Prior to that, NORAD tracked Russian aircraft within air defense identification zones on Sept. 11, 2022 and encountered Russian spy planes in the Alaskan ADIZ over two days in August.

NORAD commander Gen. Glen VanHerck has said that 2020 saw “more Russian military flights off the coast of Alaska than we’ve seen in any year since the end of the Cold War,” adding: “Russia is trying to reassert on a global stage their influence and their capabilities.”

Since 2007, the most Russian military interceptions in a single year has been 15, and the fewest has been zero, according to NORAD.

Sensitive studies in China were intended to pinpoint the source of the pandemic virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has quietly shelved the second phase of its much-anticipated scientific investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, citing ongoing challenges over attempts to conduct crucial studies in China, Nature has learned.

Researchers say they are disappointed that the investigation isn’t going ahead, because understanding how the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 first infected people is important for preventing future outbreaks. But without access to China, there is little that the WHO can do to advance the studies, says Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada. “Their hands are really tied.”

In January 2021, an international team of experts convened by the WHO travelled to Wuhan, China, where the virus that causes COVID-19 was first detected. Together with Chinese researchers, the team reviewed evidence on when and how the virus might have emerged, as part of phase one. The team released a report in March that year outlining four possible scenarios, the most likely being that SARS-CoV-2 spread from bats to people, possibly through an intermediate species. Phase one was designed to lay the groundwork for a second phase of in-depth studies to pin down exactly what happened in China and elsewhere.

But two years since that high-profile trip, the WHO has abandoned its phase-two plans. “There is no phase two,” Maria Van Kerkhove, an epidemiologist at the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland, told Nature. The WHO planned for work to be done in phases, she said, but “that plan has changed”. “The politics across the world of this really hampered progress on understanding the origins,” she said.

Researchers are undertaking some work to pin down a timeline of the virus’s initial spread. This includes efforts to trap bats in regions bordering China in search of viruses closely related to SARS-CoV-2; experimental studies to help narrow down which animals are susceptible to the virus and could be hosts; and testing of archived wastewater and blood samples collected around the world in late 2019 and early 2020. But researchers say that too much time has passed to gather some of the data needed to pinpoint where the virus originated.

Tense times

Many researchers aren’t surprised the WHO’s plans have been thwarted. In early 2020, members of then US president Donald Trump’s administration made unsubstantiated claims that the virus had originated in a Chinese laboratory, and US intelligence officials later said they had begun investigations. The city of Wuhan is home to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a high-security lab that works on coronaviruses. Chinese officials questioned whether the virus originated inside the country’s borders.

In the midst of simmering hostility between the two superpowers, WHO member states requested in May 2020 that the agency put together a science-led effort to identify how the pandemic started. Although China agreed to the mission, tensions were high by the time the WHO group left for Wuhan, and engagement with China quickly unravelled after the group returned.

Camo-Clad Migrants Apprehended in Multiple Smuggling Attempts near Border in AZ

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended dozens of camouflage-wearing migrants attempting to sneak into the U.S. interior after crossing the border from Mexico. The arrests took place in multiple human smuggling incidents interdicted by agents near the border in Arizona.

Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent John Modlin tweeted multiple images from human smuggling interdictions that took place in the past ten days in his sector.

Wilcox Station agents conducted an immigration stop on I-10 on February 7. During the inspection, agents found four migrants wearing camouflage and dark clothing. Two of the migrants were found stuffed in the trunk of the sedan.

Agents arrested the two 16-year-old U.S. citizens on charges of smuggling migrants, Modlin reported.

Douglas Station agents also found a group of camo-wearing migrants allegedly being smuggled in an SUV, Modlin tweeted. During a records check agents determined the alleged smuggler is a convicted felon and registered sex offender. Modlin said the 30-year-old man now faces criminal smuggling charges.

The alleged smuggling incident took place at the Highway 191 immigration checkpoint. Agents found five migrants wearing camouflage packed in the SUV.

Three Points Station agents responded on February 6 to a sighting by surveillance camera operators regarding migrants illegally crossing the border, Chief Modlin tweeted. The agents utilized their sign-cutting training to track the migrants.

The motorcycle unit agents managed to track down the camouflage-wearing migrants and took them into custody near Vamori, Arizona.

In December, the Palestinian human rights organization, Al-Haq, released a report accusing major corporations of maintaining Israel’s water apartheid on Palestinians living in the occupied territories.

According to Al-Haq, businesses are instrumental in helping Israel restrict water access to Palestinians and destroy Palestinian water infrastructure. Additionally, foreign companies profit from Israel’s system of water discrimination.

Al-Haq’s paper named both Israeli and international companies as:

“Complicit in the violation of the Palestinian right to self-determination and permanent sovereignty over natural resources, as well as the war crime of pillage and inhumane acts of expropriation of natural resources amounting to the crime of apartheid.”

The report detailed the actions of Israeli water companies Mekorot and Hagihon but also included outside firms TAHAL Group International B.V., Hyundai, Caterpillar Inc., JC Bamford Excavators Ltd. (JCB), and Volvo Car Group.

International Companies Complicit in Apartheid

Generally, international companies’ involvement in Israel’s water apartheid is through demolitions of water infrastructure such as cisterns, pipelines, and wells. According to Al-Haq’s research, from 2017-August 2021, Hyundai carried out 24 demolitions of Palestinian water equipment, JCB is responsible for 16, Volvo demolished 14 structures, and Caterpillar executed seven demolitions.

Hyundai is a South Korean multinational manufacturer. Its excavators are often used in home demolitions in addition to razing water equipment. Caterpillar is an American manufacturer heavily involved in Israel’s occupation through demolitions, military agreements, and construction of the settlements and the apartheid wall. The company’s major shareholders include BlackRock, an investment company criticized for fueling climate change, State Farm’s investment group, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust.

Volvo is a Swedish multinational company with major shareholders also, including BlackRock and Norges Bank Investment Management, which is owned by the state of Norway. JCB is a British construction equipment manufacturer which helped finance ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s campaign. In return, Johnson promoted the company’s products on the campaign trail.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is moving ahead with a permanent standard to protect healthcare workers from exposure to COVID-19 on the job. The agency submitted a final rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs and Office of Management and Budget for review on Thursday.

OSHA implemented a temporary emergency standard for medical facilities in June 2021, mandating those sites follow requirements around ventilation, physical barriers and other protections to reduce virus transmission.

The agency then withdrew the rule last December, saying it was working toward a permanent regulatory solution while considering broader infectious disease rulemaking.

Dive Insight:

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, labor unions have pushed for greater protections for healthcare workers — especially concerning adequate personal protective equipment, or PPE, and measures to protect workers from viral transmission.

The rule OSHA submitted Thursday is under review and details haven’t yet been made public.

National Nurses United, the country’s largest nursing union, wants the rule to include terms around screening and testing of patients, visitors and staff, measures ensuring optimal PPE, exposure notifications for healthcare workers and paid leave for those exposed or infected with COVID-19, according to a release.

“Protecting nurses and other health care workers is of paramount importance as we face an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, in addition to high and increasing influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalizations,” Deborah Burger, president of National Nurses United, said in a release.

Alongside other unions, NNU petitioned an appellate court in January to compel OSHA to codify a permanent standard on occupational exposure after the temporary rule was withdrawn.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that it lacked the authority to force the agency to make certain rules, effectively leaving discretion up to OSHA.

Provider groups including the American Hospital Association originally pushed back at the emergency standard, saying the rule was long and complex with a quick compliance date and short comment period.

Residents near toxic US train derailment urged not to drink water

The governor of Ohio warned residents living near the site of a toxic train derailment to drink bottled water Wednesday, as authorities investigate potential environmental fallout from the accident earlier this month.

The cargo train derailment in the midwestern United States sparked a massive fire and triggered the release of toxic fumes, including from vinyl chloride, a colorless gas deemed carcinogenic by the US National Cancer Institute.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine told CNN that while air quality in the town of East Palestine where the wreck occurred was “safe,” residents should not yet drink the water out of an abundance of caution.

“We did get a test back late yesterday of the water in the village and the first well that we tested, the water was fine,” he told the broadcaster, urging people to nonetheless “use bottled water. Don’t take a chance.”

More well results were expected later Wednesday, he said.

The Norfolk Southern train with approximately 150 cars was shipping cargo from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania, when it derailed on February 3.

The accident resulted in the derailment of 38 cars, after which “a fire ensued which damaged an additional 12 cars,” the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement Tuesday.

Of the derailed cars, 11 were carrying hazardous materials, including vinyl chloride, butyl acrylate and other chemicals, the NTSB said.

Several thousand residents were evacuated as authorities grappled with how to deal with the crisis and the level of danger it posed.

To avert explosion, the railroad conducted a controlled release of the chemicals, which discharged toxic and potentially deadly fumes into the air, DeWine’s office said.

Some 3,500 fish died after the accident along 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) of nearby streams, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources reported.

DeWine said Norfolk Southern would be held accountable and should “pay for everything,” adding that some people in East Palestine were concerned the company would leave before the cleanup is finished and problems are dealt with.

“They are responsible for a very serious train wreck that occurred with some very toxic material,” he told CNN. “So we’re going to hold their feet to the fire.”

Norfolk Southern said in a statement Tuesday it had provided $1.2 million to families and businesses for “costs related to the evacuation.”

Moscow Slams Nordics for Sweeping Nord Stream Blast Under Carpet as Hersh Warns of Dire Costs for US

Last week, bombshell reporting by veteran US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh revealed that the Biden administration was directly responsible for September’s attacks against the Nord Stream network, which cut off a major Russian route for energy deliveries to Germany, and undermined Europe’s energy security.

Denmark and Sweden have failed to respond to Russian overtures to discuss the Nord Stream blasts for nearly six months now, with their behavior constituting nothing short of a “boorish” attempt to hide Washington's responsibility for the sabotage attack, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said.

“For half a year now they've been as silent as a fish on ice, and since September neither the Swedes nor the Danish have responded to official letters of our prime minister, Mikhail Mishustin, who very politely offered to appoint some kind of contact person with whom it would be possible to hold talks, since [the attack] took place in the territorial waters of their exclusive zones, and the pipelines are the property of a Russian company,” Lavrov said, speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

“If since September the head of the Russian government is waiting for a reply from the absolutely independent sovereign states in question, if our ambassadors remind the prime ministers of these countries about once a month that they've been contacted, at least tell him 'yes mister prime minister, we have received your appeal but we're busy at the moment'. But we haven't got even that. I think this is boorishness. But this boorishness masks the total failure of attempts to obscure the responsibility of the collective West, led by the United States, for this sabotage, for organizing this terrorist act,” the Russian top diplomat added.

Lavrov characterized the sabotage of Nord Stream a “final solution to the German gas issue” by its overseas partners. “Just as they are now trying to resolve the 'Russian question,' so did they want to resolve the 'German question,' so that Berlin would never try to play any kind of independent role in the foreseeable historical perspective," Lavrov said, recalling how competitively-priced and dependable Russian energy had enabled Germany to become Europe's leading economy.

“Germany was not just humiliated, but was put in its place – the place of a satellite of the United States, with Washington deciding whether the country can ensure its economic development, meet the social needs of its citizens through the use of gas coming through a pipeline which Berlin partially paid for itself.” The Biden administration doesn't seem to “give a damn about what hardship will befall many countries, including their close allies,” Lavrov emphasized.

Commenting on Hersh’s bombshell reporting on the Nord Stream blasts, and the media blackout in coverage of the story except to attack or smear the veteran investigative reporter, Lavrov compared Western governments’ behavior to a “trend” straight out of a George Orwell novel in which the state keeps media firmly under control.

“Look at the reaction in the West to Hersh’s precise, fact-based revelations in connection with the explosions of Nord Stream 1 and 2,” Lavrov said. The Russian diplomat pointed out that if Moscow was to be blamed, for instance, for the disruption of an oil pipeline between Canada and the US, the media would be forced to write about it non-stop. But with Hersh’s story – grounded in facts, the reaction has been zilch.

Lavrov urged the foreign press to conduct fact-based investigations into the costs being borne by European economies after the rejection of Russian energy, and to dig more closely into the details of the revelations uncovered by Hersh.

Tunisia Arrests Raise Opposition Fears of Wider Crackdown

TUNIS (Reuters) - Coordinated arrests of political and media figures represent a new phase in Tunisian President Kais Saied's struggle with a fragmented but emboldened opposition, raising fears of a wider campaign to quell dissent.

Since Saied shut down parliament 18 months ago, moving to rule by decree before rewriting the constitution, security forces had moved only sporadically against opponents who accuse him of an undemocratic coup.

Saied has denied a coup, saying his actions were legal and necessary to save Tunisia from chaos. He promised to uphold rights and freedoms won in the 2011 revolution that brought democracy.

However, the wave of arrests since Saturday represents a tough new move against his critics and an escalation from the campaign of pressure that has built over recent months with travel bans and investigations.

Police have detained opposition politicians, an influential businessman, the head of Tunisia's most important independent news outlet, two judges and an official from the powerful labour union.

While authorities have not yet commented on the arrests, lawyers for some of those detained have said they were accused of conspiring against state security.

A lawyer for Noureddine Boutar, the head of Tunisia's main independent news outlet Mosaique FM, said he had been questioned about his radio station's financing and editorial policy, including how it chose guests.

"What happened is dangerous… The authorities' message to journalists who do not enter a state of obedience is that this will be your fate," said Mahdi Jlassi, head of Tunisia's journalists' syndicate.

KEY MOMENT

The arrests come at a sticky moment for Saied.

An ultra-low turnout of 11% in elections for a parliament that is part of his new political system was ridiculed by the opposition as evidence that the president's changes lack popular support.

The powerful UGTT labour union has threatened direct action against Saied over his economic plans, his rejection of its proposals for a political dialogue and last month's arrest of one of its senior officials.

Efforts to secure a foreign bailout for state finances have stalled, with ratings agencies saying Tunisia risks default even as an economic crisis has caused shortages.

Internationally, Tunisia has rarely looked more isolated, with Western aid reduced, no sign of Gulf support and a new spat last week with main ally and neighbour Algeria.

Meanwhile parts of the long-fractured opposition are starting to talk about ways to put aside their old enmities to coordinate action against Saied, leading opposition figure Nejib Chebbi told Reuters.

SECURITY

Critics of Saied fear the arrests mean his fiery rhetoric decrying foes as traitors is sliding into hard action facilitated by his accumulation of powers - including his assumption last year of ultimate authority over the judiciary.

They are worried by his apparent moves to bring the military closer into government, as was evident in his appointment of a senior army official as agriculture minister last month.

"The president's use of military institutions in political life is harmful to the country and to the army's neutrality and high reputation," Chebbi said.

Critics also cite the authorities' increased use of military courts to try political cases since Saied's seizure of powers in 2021. Previous governments also used military courts but less often.

However, analysts and diplomats say there are no signs that the military is actively seeking a political role.

A more immediate concern for the opposition is the security forces - the police and other internal agencies responsible for the arrests since Saturday.

Many Tunisians still recoil at the memory of the fear of voicing public criticism, and of the abuses meted out to dissidents, before the 2011 revolution.

In a statement on Tuesday, four political parties, Attayar, Ettakatol, the Workers' Party and Qotb, warned that the arrests indicated "a dangerous shift from authoritarian populism towards dictatorship".

Depositions and discovery from the Missouri/Louisiana v. Biden lawsuit, and the ongoing release of the Twitter files, has exposed NASS as a central player in a vast and complex unconstitutional “Censorship Enterprise.”

Senior state election officials such as Ardoin, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, have tried to redefine illegal censorship as “misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information” or MDM.

The Gateway Pundit previously reported on email evidence showing Toulouse Oliver directing a subordinate to contact Twitter to take down a post concerning a power outage at a polling place.

They evidently think the American public is too stupid to realize their true intent, which is to spy on, suppress, and silence conservative voices that questioned the massive legal, behavioral, mathematical, and statistical deviations observed during the 2020 election.

It is important to note that Kyle Ardoin first became interim Secretary of State as a registered Democrat. Mr. Ardoin changed his party affiliation to Republican the day before qualifying for a special election to replace the incumbent a registered Republican who resigned.

Last week during the US House Committee on Oversight Hearing, Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) showed the infographic below that exposes all many of the organizations that conspired to create the federally-funded “Censorship Enterprise.”

It should be obvious to even a casual observer that any senior officer of NASS for the past four years must have been part of the planning and implementation of these illegal activities.

YouTube also censored his account.

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) – As officials continue to try to lower the risks from a train derailment and fire in East Palestine, there are still questions as to what caused it.

In a press conference Sunday, the National Transportation Safety Board shared what it believes to be the cause.

“We have obtained two videos which show preliminary indications of mechanical issues on one of the railcar axles,” said National Transportation Safety Board member Michael Graham.

This is known as a hot box, which is a term used for when a wheel bearing overheats on a railcar. In this case, the overheating led to a fire which then led to the derailment.

Former State Rep Bob Hagan retired in 2021 after 50 years in the railroad industry. He says there are hot box detectors that alert conductors to stop the train.

“We have, now, technology that can interpret any time a wheel is hot through that, and it would go via the radio where the engineer would be running the train, the conductor of course would be sitting next to them,” Hagan said.

Graham says the train did drive through one of these detectors shortly before the derailment.

“The crew did receive a wayside defect detector, shortly before the derailment indicating a mechanical issue. Then an emergency break application was initiated,” Graham said.

However, the train was not able to stop in time. In a viewer video, you can see a wheel on fire as the train was still moving, just moments before it derailed.

Hagan says in his 50 years on the job, he only got about 10 hot box alerts in which he had to stop a train. He believes cutbacks on railroad jobs are partially to blame for situations like we’re seeing now in East Palestine.

“When I was working on the railroad, you would have 100 cars which would be about one mile, they’ve doubled those up, sometimes tripled those up. So now you have trains that are three miles long that are impossible to look out the back window when you’re going around a curve to see if anything is on fire,” Hagan said.

During the presser, Graham said the train was carrying 141 load cars, nine empty cars and three locomotives, which are used to pull the train.

NTSB is asking anyone with pictures or videos of the derailment to send them to witness@ntsb.gov.

An Arkansas Republican lawmaker has come under fire for asking a transgender doctor an extremely personal question. Dr. Gwendolyn Herzig was testifying against a proposed bill that would allow minors who suffer ill-effects of pharmaceutical or surgical sex changes to hold their doctor liable when Sen. Matt McKee asked Herzig "do you have a penis?"

The Monday hearing was for Senate Bill 199, dubbed the Protecting Minors From Medical Malpractice Act of 2023, which would give people who underwent damaging hormone treatment and sex change surgeries as minors the ability to file a malpractice lawsuit for up to 30 years after they turn 18. Currently, Arkansas allows for such lawsuits only within two years of whatever "injury" the individual may have sustained.

"The idea that teenagers, let alone little children, are capable of making such life-altering decisions is not only brand new, but it's absurd," said bill sponsor Republican Sen. Gary Stubblefield, according to the Daily Mail. "A society that allows them to do this is a deeply broken society."

Herzig, a Little Rock pharmacy owner who identifies as transgender, was highly offended when state Sen. Matt McKee asked about Herzig's genitals. Herzig's LinkedIn displays a focus on "LGBTQ+ care with an emphasis in transgender medicine."

"You said that you're a trans woman?" McKee asked. "Do you have a penis?"

In video footage from that moment, the audience can be heard gasping and jeering him.

"That's horrible," Herzig said after a few moments.

"You're the one that brought that into the discussion," the senator fired back.

Microsoft's Bing AI Chatbot Starts Threatening People

Last week, Microsoft announced the new AI-powered Bing: a search interface that incorporates a language model powered chatbot that can run searches for you and summarize the results, plus do all of the other fun things that engines like GPT-3 and ChatGPT have been demonstrating over the past few months: the ability to generate poetry, and jokes, and do creative writing, and so much more.

This week, people have started gaining access to it via the waiting list. It’s increasingly looking like this may be one of the most hilariously inappropriate applications of AI that we’ve seen yet.

If you haven’t been paying attention, here’s what’s transpired so far.

The demo was full of errors

It started gaslighting people

It suffered an existential crisis

The prompt leaked

And then it started threatening people

The demo that introduced AI Bing to the world was really compelling: they showed shopping comparison, and trip itinerary planning, and financial statement summarization.

Then Dmitri Brereton did some fact checking against the examples from the demo.

It said that the cons of the “Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum” included a “short cord length of 16 feet”, when that vacuum has no cord at all—and that “it’s noisy enough to scare pets” when online reviews note that it’s really quiet.

It recommended a “rustic and charming” bar in Mexico City without noting that it’s also one of the oldest gay bars in Mexico City.

Best of all, it provided a summary of Gap’s financials and compared them to those of Lululemon… while entirely making up many of the figures. Dmitri observes that “Lululemon’s diluted earnings per share is $2.00 not $1.65.” These are not small mistakes!

The fact that these mistakes made it into the big launch demo is baffling to me. Did no-one think to fact check the examples in advance?

I absolutely love the idea of an AI-assisted search engine that can run searches and use them for summaries and to help answer my questions for me. But large language models have no concept of “truth”—they just know how to best complete a sentence in a way that’s statistically probable based on their inputs and training set. So they make things up, and then state them with extreme confidence.

A search engine that invents financial figures when answering queries to compare companies is pretty much a worst-case scenario for applying this technology.

Dianne Feinstein didn't seem to know what took place on the Senate floor Wednesday morning.

The retiring California Democrat asked staff for confirmation about a vote she had just attended.

The latest flash of apparent confusion comes as Feinstein plans to serve out her term through 2024.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein emerged from the Senate chamber on Wednesday seemingly confused about what she had done during a two-vote series.

"Did I vote for that?" Insider overheard the California Democrat ask her long-time chief of staff, David Grannis, about approving a judicial nominee to the federal bench.

Grannis, who had just finished explaining to his 89-year-old boss that the six Senate votes scheduled throughout the day would be on Biden appointees, shook his head and said, "No."

The most jarring part about the public episode was that Grannis was trying to map out what Feinstein — whose cognitive ability has increasingly come into question — needed to know about what was happening later, but she couldn't recall what had transpired minutes before.

Feinstein's latest stumble comes less than 24 hours after her staff announced that she wouldn't run for a seventh term in 2024.

Her looming retirement seemed to catch the decades-long politician off guard, causing Feinstein and her staff to clash over her career plans.

The last time Feinstein blew up at staff in Insider's presence, she was taking some junior aides to task for rushing her into a continuing resolution vote she appeared unprepared for.

"I don't even know what that is," Feinstein told staff last fall on her way through the Senate subway.

Feinstein aides did not immediately respond to a request for comment about why she would have been thrown by the judicial nominees' votes.

Several House Democratic lawmakers, including Reps. Katie Porter, Adam Schiff, and Barbara Lee, have already announced they're running or are reportedly preparing to mount a bid for her Senate seat.

The Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health (CTEH), a private contractor hired by Norfolk 'Southern to test water, soil, and air quality in East Palestine, Ohio, has a history of minimizing the effects of environmental disasters to satisfy its corporate employers, according to critics.

While the Arkansas-based firm provides consulting services to various industries, it is known for performing toxicology monitoring for the oil and gas industry following health and safety incidents.

After a million gallons of oil spilled on a Louisiana town in 2005, after a flood of toxic coal ash smothered central Tennessee in 2008, and after defective Chinese drywall began plaguing Florida homeowners, CTEH was on the scene — saying everything was fine.

In each of these cases, the toxicology firm was alleged to be supplying the data its employers wanted while falsely assuring the public that they were safe from harm.

A crude oil spill during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A coal ash spill in Tennessee in 2008. The BP oil spill in 2010. In all three cases, the companies responsible for these environmental calamities turned to the same Arkansas-based consulting firm, the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, to monitor air and water quality and workers’ chemical exposure.

And each time, CTEH was later accused of mishandling data collection. And companies used CTEH’s findings to reassure people that the spilled chemicals posed little risk to public health.

This week, a fire at International Terminals Company’s chemical storage facility outside Houston, blanketed the country’s fourth-largest city in a cloud of smoke. Multiple school districts in the area cancelled classes.

Once again, CTEH got the call to provide air quality monitoring.

The fire at ITC’s facility reignited late Friday afternoon after a dike wall used to contain chemicals partially collapsed, renewing concerns about air quality. According to initial reports, the company released 9 million pounds of pollutants in just the first day of the fire. On Thursday, the city of Deer Park, home to the facility, issued a shelter-in-place advisory after benzene levels spiked overnight. Long-term benzene exposure can cause anemia, lead to cancer, and damage women’s reproductive health.

Summary of Incident

On the morning of January 2, 2005, a report to the National Response Center indicated an explosion and fire has occurred at the Teris LLC facility in El Dorado, Arkansas. The initial explosion occurred at approximately 0800 hours.

The facility reported initially that an employee attempted to extinguish a small fire within a warehouse storing various waste containers, but that the fire soon grew out of control.

The cause of the accident is not addressed within this report.

Response organizations (El Dorado Fire and Police Departments, as well as the Union County Sheriff Department) quickly responded and established a unified command with the Teris personnel to establish a strategy and response procedures for dealing with the emergency.

Local responders closed nearby streets, as well as evacuating approximately 200 residents downwind from the facility.

EPA Region 6 dispatched its Airborne Spectral and Photographic Environmental Technology (ASPECT) plan to monitor the plume. Preliminary review of the data collected by ASPECT showed low concentrations of trimethylamine in the immediate downwind plume. No other significant compounds or concentrations were detected.

Fire fighting was conducted by Teris personnel on-site, with off-site assistance from the local response organizations.

Due to the reactive wastes involved in the fire, water was not used as an extinguishing agent. Efforts focused on cooling areas not involved in the fire, as well as movement of materials not involved.

By 1900 hours on January 2, local officials lifted part of the evacuation area. By 1600 hours on January 3, all evacuations and road closures were lifted.

On-going monitoring of the ambient air was conducted by the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health (CTEH), who was contracted by Teris. Additionally, EPA START contractors monitoring throughout the community.

No significant concentrations of contaminants were detected during the air monitoring efforts. CTEH did detect elevated levels of particulate matter immediately adjacent to the scene.

Sampling was conducted by Teris, with EPA and Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) coordination, from fire suppression runoff. These samples were to be analyzed to determine proper disposal of this water runoff.

Additionally, wipe samples were collected by Teris (CTEH), in coordination with EPA, ADEQ, and Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) at 10 locations within the community.

Teris contracted with a remediation company (HEPACO) to relocate drums not involved in the fire, as well as remediation of the warehouse after the fire is extinguished.

EPA discontinued air monitoring and demobilized from the scene on January 6. Teris continued to work with local response officials, as well as ADEQ and ADH, on remediation efforts.

A Jan. 2 explosion and fire at a hazardous-waste storage site was probably a result of spontaneous ignition of a barrel of sodium chlorate.

EL DORADO, Ark. (AP) – A Jan. 2 explosion and fire at a hazardous-waste storage site was probably a result of spontaneous ignition of a barrel of sodium chlorate that may have contained other materials that reacted with the chemical, according to a preliminary report.

The report released Tuesday was submitted earlier in the week to the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality.

The fire prompted authorities to evacuate 2,500 people from the area around the Teris LLC hazardous-waste storage warehouse. No injuries were reported, however, and the evacuees were allowed to return to their homes and businesses a day later.

The report says waste materials shipped to Teris LLC in December from a New York rail yard contained more than just the soil and sodium chlorate _ a common herbicide and oxidizer _ that workers expected. The waste may have contained enough wood, creosote and fuel residue to react with the sodium chlorate to produce heat.

"From the initial investigation, it appears there was some foreign material in there that caused the reaction,'' Teris vice president Doug Riley said.

Barrels of the same material caught fire Jan. 12 after they were removed from the smoldering warehouse and stored temporarily in a trailer on the Teris grounds.

The Jan. 2 fire smoldered for days after firefighters chose not to fight it for fear that water would react dangerously with some of the stored chemicals.

The Teris facility, formerly operated by Ensco, disposes of hazardous wastes from industries and government operations. The plant receives spent solvents, waste oils, chlorinated hydrocarbons, herbicides and insecticides, as well as dirt, residues and contaminated water from cleanup activities from other sites.

Yesterday, it was announced that Senator Dianne Feinstein is retiring. Essentially, the powers in control of the UniParty club system are clearing the way for Senator Adam Schiff, who will – not coincidentally – be maneuvered into position on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. However, the people around Feinstein forgot to tell her they were making a formal announcement.

WASHINGTON DC – Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said she did not know her office released a statement saying she will not seek reelection in 2024.

“I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends,” Feinstein, 89, said in the statement.

Later on Tuesday, reporters at the Capitol asked her about the announcement.

“I haven’t made that decision,” she said, according to Savannah Behrman of the National Journal. “I haven’t released anything.”

A Feinstein staffer then told her, “We put out the statement.”

“You put out the statement?” the senator replied, seemingly surprised.

You might remember when Hillary Clinton failed to win the race, and after the SSCI efforts to defeat candidate Donald Trump failed, in January of 2017 with the incoming Trump administration now presenting the new threat to the corrupt DC system, Dianne Feinstein was removed from the SSCI and replaced with Senator Mark Warner.

The responsibility to protect the corrupt systems was too big a task for Feinstein, hence the decision to replace with Warner. That’s the inside baseball way the corrupt levers of the U.S. government work. The overarching system is in place to protect itself.

Dianne Feinstein has exhausted her usefulness. As the Democrats work the system, don’t be surprised if they don’t wait for the election. We could see Feinstein with an early exit and California Governor Gavin Newsom with the job of appointing Adam Schiff to the Senate in the pre-positioning and control.

Unfortunately, the illusion of choice will continue so long as the RNC and DNC clubs continue to operate the structures.

In the party, that means everything except the most direct campaign activities are outsourced to networks of nonprofits that use tax-deductible donations for everything from voter registration and outreach, media and messaging, to funding election infrastructure ‘Zuckerbucks’ style.

Unlike its Black Lives Matter allies, the Antifa networks aren’t funded by a single nonprofit. Antifa’s illegal activities and the radical tendencies of its participants, many of whom are involved in a variety of radical groups, some of them domestic terrorist organizations, makes that a non-starter. However, unlike conservative groups which have been ‘debanked’ from Big Tech fundraising platforms, Antifa gains support through leftist 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) groups which includes fundraising platforms, bail funds, street medics and promotional media organizations.

One of the worst examples also operates arm in arm with the Democratic Party.

The International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund raises money through crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe, Patreon and FundRazr (also utilized by the Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Cambridge) despite clear bans on raising money for illegal or criminal activity.

But its primary fundraising platform is also utilized by the Democratic National Committee.

Connected by a shortlink titled ‘DefendAntifa’, the International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund, its fundraising page flying the Antifa flag and bearing a banner “Free All Antifa Prisoners” describes itself as providing “direct, immediate support to anti-fascists” including medical bills, legal defense and an “antifa prisoner fund”, uses the Action Network: a leftist 501(c)(4) and (c)(3).

The Action Network boasts that “after three months of using Action Network the DNC shattered all sorts of fundraising records.” The Antifa defense fund, which claims to have dispensed $75,000 in three years, is apparently also doing well with the overlapping DNC donor base.

While the Action Network home page shows off a picture of Biden to promote its DNC fundraising, the International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund’s blog features a story about helping out during the Biden inauguration riots featuring of black masked antifa thugs bearing a banner featuring an AK-47 and the message, “We don’t want Biden, we want revenge.”

The Action Network was set up by Senator John Kerry’s digital director during the Occupy Wall Street riots, is emblematic of the relationship between the Democrat establishment and the most extreme elements of the Left. As is an antifa defense fund raising money for a defendant in the Biden inauguration riots using the Action Network whose home page features Biden’s picture.

Beyond the DNC, the Action Network is the fundraising platform for the AFL-CIO, Black Lives Matter, the Women’s March, the DSA and Communist Party USA. The spectrum reflects the growing extremism that the Democrats have become complicit in and even directly support.

The Action Network is a 501(c)(4) and while the C4 status comes with greater freedom to engage in lobbying, it does not sanction any involvement in illegal activities.

Federal filings showed that Omar previously paid millions of dollars from her campaign to the E Street Group, a political consulting firm co-owned by her husband, Tim Mynett, during the 2020 election cycle. But after blowback and criticism, Omar cut ties with her husband’s firm.

“But after facing increased scrutiny over the payments, Omar abruptly changed course from her once defiant state and cut off the cash flow to the E Street group shortly before the switch into the 2022 cycle. Now, her campaign pays far less for the same services to various other firms, calling into question the high nature of the E Street Group’s past charges,” Fox News reported.

Chicago Dad Placed On Watchlist After Opposing Pornography In Schools

A Chicago father has learned that he has been placed on a flight watchlist after opposing pornographic materials in his kids’ schools.

Over the summer of 2021, Terry Newsome—who described himself in comments to the Epoch Times as a “lifelong Democrat” until recently—was one of several parents in the 99th school district of Downer’s Grove, Chicago, who expressed opposition to books in his children’s library that had sexually explicit and pornographic content.

In December, Newsome discovered he had been placed on a watchlist.

On Dec. 16, 2022, he and his family attempted to board a plane en route to Turning Point USA’s “America Fest” convention in Phoenix, Arizona.

Newsome, who travels a great deal for work, was shocked to learn that he had been placed on a watchlist and had to get substantially more screening before being allowed to board, causing him to miss his original flight.

Initially, Newsome was told that he had been placed on the list by the FBI. On his return journey from Phoenix, he was informed that the classification originated from the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Despite having been a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) pre-check-approved flier for over a decade, upon his family’s arrival at O’Hare International Airport, Newsome learned about the new designation.

Upon arriving at the airport, Newsome’s family found that they “couldn’t check in electronically like we normally did.” Initially, Newsome and his wife just chalked it up to the fact that they had minors traveling with them that were not their children.

It was only later that Newsome learned he had been given the dreaded “quad-S” designation on his ticket, an acronym standing for Secondary Security Screening Selection (SSSS).

Compared to the normal security guidelines for boarding, those with boarding passes marked SSSS must get far more screening.

SSSS boarding pass holders are traditionally removed from the line and brought elsewhere for additional screening. This screening is nothing if not thorough—passengers are asked to remove all items from their bags, which are then examined individually while the bag is thoroughly searched.

You have to give Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw a standing ovation for his performance at the railroad’s investor day last month. Using logic as a sledgehammer, it took him just 10 minutes to demolish two of the things that have hurt rail service and put a lid on traffic growth: Excessive cost-cutting and an overemphasis on the operating ratio.

Shaw told a roomful of Wall Street analysts point blank that his railroad would no longer have a singular focus on its operating ratio. With the notable exception of Union Pacific, the Class I railroads have been heading in this direction. But Shaw publicly and forcefully explained why railroads need to turn the page in order to grow.

Instead of trying to cut its way to prosperity, NS aims to build a railroad with the resources required to provide reliable service year in and year out. The really big news here is that NS is attacking the root cause of the railroad industry’s recurring bouts with service problems: The practice of furloughing train crews at the drop of a hat, then acting surprised when they don’t return to the railroad.

“Our traditional approaches for dealing with business cycles — by furloughing temporarily surplus employees and tightening other spending when demand falls off — did not work well,” Shaw says. “When the time came to rebuild our ranks as freight transportation demand returned, we were unable to rehire quickly enough to operate fluidly. Today, we are still recovering from the disruption of the pandemic. Our service has turned the corner, but we are not yet at our desired level of staffing, or at the level of service that our customers expect.”

The Class I railroads get caught short of crews every three or four years. In the short term, this creates congestion, increases costs, and means railroads can’t handle all the freight that wants to move on rail.

“In the long term, these disruptions have eroded the confidence customers need to have if they are going to structurally rely on rail instead of highways,” Shaw says. “A company can’t expect to provide sustainable growth if it provides its customers with a lousy service product every three years.”

To break this cycle, NS will hang on to its engineers and conductors during downturns. The railroad will take advantage of having surplus crews to qualify them on new territories and to train conductors to become engineers. The idea is that NS will be able to attract and retain its skilled workforce, provide consistent service, and be able to handle a traffic rebound without skipping a beat.

This will inevitably raise the operating ratio in the short term. That’s been a no-no on Wall Street for investors who can’t see beyond the next quarter. Shaw says enough of this because in the long run, furloughs backfire.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt says that artificial intelligence will be as game-changing as nuclear weapons when it comes to military applications.

"Every once in a while, a new weapon, a new technology comes along that changes things. Einstein wrote a letter to Roosevelt in the 1930s saying that there is this new technology—nuclear weapons—that could change war, which it clearly did," Schmidt told Wired. "I would argue that [AI-powered] autonomy and decentralised, distributed systems are that powerful."

With Schmidt’s help, a similar view has taken root inside the DOD over the past decade, where leaders believe AI will revolutionize military hardware, intelligence gathering, and backend software. In the early 2010s the Pentagon began assessing technology that could help it maintain an edge over an ascendant Chinese military. The Defense Science Board, the agency’s top technical advisory body, concluded that AI-powered autonomy would shape the future of military competition and conflict. -Wired

According to Schmidt, the US military has good people, but a bad system which could benefit greatly by upgrading their technology.

"Let's imagine we’re going to build a better war-fighting system," he said, outlining what would amount to an enormous overhaul of the US military. "We would just create a tech company … It would build a large number of inexpensive devices that were highly mobile, that were attritable, and those devices—or drones—would have sensors or weapons, and they would be networked together."

The problem with today’s Pentagon is hardly money, talent, or determination, in Schmidt’s opinion. He describes the US military as “great human beings inside a bad system”—one that evolved to serve a previous era dominated by large, slow, expensive projects like aircraft carriers and a bureaucratic system that prevents people from moving too quickly. Independent studies and congressional hearings have found that it can take years for the DOD to select and buy software, which may be outdated by the time it is installed. Schmidt says this is a huge problem for the US, because computerization, software, and networking are poised to revolutionize warfare. -Wired

Schmidt, coincidentally (or not) is backing a company called Istari, which uses machine learning to virtually assemble and test war machines.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg shifted part of the blame for the recent derailment of a train carrying toxic chemicals in Ohio on the Trump administration reversing a little-known safety rule.

Buttigieg noted Tuesday evening that his agency had taken a series of steps to improve rail safety through "historic investments," but said it was constrained by the Trump administration action. In 2018, the Department of Transportation (DOT) withdrew a rule proposed three years earlier requiring trains carrying certain dangerous chemicals to utilize electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes, saying the technology's benefits were inconclusive.
