🚨 When I first broke this story in March of 2022, it was revealed that the

Kosovo, Donbass and Catalonia are famous examples, but do you realize how many countries have problems with separatism?

More than 100 governments recognized Kosovo’s self-proclaimed independence 15 years ago, but most of them have their own issues of this kind

In February of 2008, Kosovo’s parliament – dominated by Albanian separatists – declared the province’s independence from Serbia. Belgrade objected to the move, but it the new "state" was recognized the very next day by the United States, Britain, France, Türkiye, and Albania. More than 50 countries followed by the end of that year.

As of now, almost 100 UN member states have recognized Kosovo’s sovereignty. However, this figure is in constant flux, as some countries have withdrawn their support due to Belgrade’s diplomatic efforts. Nevertheless, Pristina continues to claim that 117 countries support its "independence."

In fact, more than half of the countries belonging to the UN do not recognize Kosovo’s independence. Among these are China, India, most of the post-Soviet countries, as well as several EU members, namely Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Romania, and Slovakia.

Russia is one of the main opponents of Kosovo’s declaration of independence and has been consistent about the consequences for the world order. Upon closer examination, it turns out that the vast majority of global states are dealing with some form of separatist issues, ranging from significant to very minor.

A Balkan Patchwork Quilt

The disputed status of Kosovo is only the latest instance of separatism resulting in the emergence of a new state-like entity in the Balkans. The disintegration of the region has been dubbed ‘Balkanization’, and deservedly so.

At the end of the last century, most of the Balkans were incorporated into a united country called Yugoslavia. Today, there are seven independent countries in its place, but this is by no means where it might end.

Serbia was the first to face the problem of Albanian separatism, but there are Albanian communities in other nations throughout the region – including Montenegro, Greece, and Northern Macedonia. In the latter, the threat is especially acute, since Albanians, who account for 25% of the country’s total population, live in the country’s western regions adjacent to Kosovo.

In addition to the Kosovo problem, Serbia has potential issues with Vojvodina – an autonomous region inhabited not only by Serbs, but also Hungarians, who have a very strong regional identity.

Kosovo also has its own internal challenges. In the northern part of the province, there is an enclave populated mainly by Serbs, who do not like the prospect of being isolated from their larger homeland. Likewise, problems with separatism have inevitably arisen in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the Republika Srpska, which is part of it, looks towards independence or reunification with Serbia and has increasingly expressed views on the future that contradict those of the central government.

The same problem, though less acute, can be found in Croatian enclaves of Bosnia, as well as Croatia itself, where there are enclaves of Serbs….

This time it was a China-based former employee of Dutch chip giant ASML Holding that is accused of stealing data from a system that the company uses to store technical information about its machinery.

The theft took place from a repository that reportedly houses details of lithography systems used in the world's most advanced chips. It included "technological information", but not hardware, and was carried out by a male employee over the last few months, SCMP wrote.

The theft was disclosed by the company on Wednesday of this week. At the time, the theft was only characterized as "a former worker in China" who had "stolen confidential information", per the South China Morning Post.

The data was housed in a product life cycle management program known as Teamcenter, the report says. The system is known as a "shared storehouse" for technical information, and can be used by different employees to manage product development. The software allows “common access to a single repository of all product-related knowledge, data and processes”.

The company said this week that it didn't believe the theft was material to its business, but it marks the second breach of its kind that ASML has been able to link to China. Last year the company accused a firm based in Beijing of stealing trade secrets over the course of years. All the while, the U.S. has been pressuring other nations around the world to try and prevent China's chip-making capabilities from advancing.

ASML has initiated an internal investigation and has tightened security in response to the incident. It also noted this week that export controls may have been violated, potentially exposing the company to regulator backlash as well.

It is unclear what, if any, ties to authorities in China the former employee may have had. Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said this week he was "not aware" of ASML's accusation.

Resurgent passenger aviation following the coronavirus pandemic has created shortages of jet fuel, pushing up airlines’ operating costs and fares. U.S. jet fuel inventories stood at just 36.5 million barrels on February 10, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Stocks were at the lowest for the time of year since 1985 and 4.3 million barrels (-11% or -1.94 standard deviations) below the prior ten-year seasonal average. The deficit has narrowed from 6.3 million barrels (-15% or -2.83 standard deviations) at the start of October 2022, but inventories remain stretched. Kerosene-type jet fuel is produced by similar refinery processes to diesel and other distillate fuel oils, but at higher quality specifications. Jet supplies have experienced the same pressures as other middle distillates – rebounding transportation demand coupled with worldwide limits on refinery production. Shortages of other middle distillates have bled across into tight supplies of jet fuel since both draw from the same refinery streams.

The number of passengers boarding scheduled flights in the United States recovered to 89% of its pre-pandemic level between January and November 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The volume of jet fuel supplied to the domestic market also returned to 89% of the pre-pandemic level in the first eleven months of 2022, according to the EIA. But with shortages of both jet fuel and other middle distillates, the average price paid for jet fuel climbed to $3.37 per gallon ($142 per barrel) in 2022 up from $2.00 per gallon in 2019. As a result, airlines spent a total of $56 billion on fuel for scheduled U.S. flights in 2022, up from $36 billion in 2019. With China lifting domestic and international travel restrictions, global consumption of jet fuel is set to rise sharply, which will stretch jet fuel supplies even further in 2023.

Iberian Peninsula: Two Countries Aren’t Enough

If there wasn’t a king sitting in Madrid who still unites most of the peninsula, ‘Balkanization’ might well have been called ‘Iberization’ – there are more separatist movements in Spain than any other Western European country.

The whole world is well aware of the problem of Catalonia. Just five years ago, in October 2017, the local authorities there held a referendum on independence, which ended in failure, despite the fact that more than 90% of those who voted supported the separation of the region from Spain. Madrid refused to recognize this expression of the people’s will. In the aftermath, some of the leaders of the Catalan separatist movement were arrested, while others managed to flee the country. However, this has hardly quashed the desire of local residents.

In addition to the Catalan issue, there is also Basque separatism, which, unlike the Catalonian variety, often takes on more radical forms. Radical nationalists from ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna – Basque Country and Freedom) fought for independence from Spain and the Spanish crown for more than 40 years, killing 800 people. In 2018, the group announced its self-dissolution, but this doesn’t mean that the problem has gone away. One of the largest parties in the region, the Basque Nationalist Party, still supports the idea of independence from Madrid.

Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities, or regions. While not reaching the level of separatism, the idea of regional autonomy flourishes in each of them to one degree or another. In local elections, candidates who call for more independence and autonomy regularly garner a large percentage of the vote in Aragon, Andalusia, Castile, Asturias, Cantabria, and Galicia, as well as other autonomous communities.

And not all is sweetness and light in the Iberian peninsula’s other country, Portugal, either… though it’s true that the regions seeking to free themselves from the power of Lisbon are separated from that metropolis by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean: we’re talking the archipelago of Madeira and the Azores.

Britain: A disunited Kingdom

Scottish separatism has been haunting London for the past few years. After independence supporters won the last regional elections, they announced their intention to hold a second referendum on seceding from the United Kingdom. The first was held in 2014, when 55% opposed the divorce, and 45% supported it. Confident in the results of the vote, London didn’t interfere with the will of the Scots at that time.

However, two years later, the UK voted to leave the European Union, and Edinburgh demanded a new referendum, as Scots clearly wanted to stay in the EU, having voted against by a landslide 62%. The Scottish authorities had wanted to hold a new referendum in October 2023, but, last November, Great Britain’s Supreme Court ruled that plebiscites on independence cannot be held without London’s consent. This time the Tory-controlled parliament does not intend to grant it. Edinburgh has no intention of giving up, with the former head of the Scottish government, Nicola Sturgeon promising “Scottish democracy will not be denied.”

Last week, Sturgeon announced her resignation as Scotland’s first minister, but still, speaking of her successor, she expressed confidence that the person “will lead Scotland to independence.”

Relations with Northern Ireland are no less problematic for London. In local elections in the spring of 2022, the Sinn Fein party, which advocates for reuniting with the Republic of Ireland and seceding from the Uk, won regional elections for the first time. The Northern Ireland Protocol, signed between London and the EU during Brexit, probably contributed to the separatists’ growing popularity. The document calls for preserving a single customs space between Dublin and Belfast, while actually introducing customs between Britain and Northern Ireland.

London's issues don’t stop there with varying degrees of separatist activity in Cornwall, Mercia (the West Midlands and East Midlands regions), Northumberland, Yorkshire, Jersey, and Wales, and even talk of England itself exiting the UK. However, these appear to be trite compared to the Scottish and Irish questions…

Archaeologists found something much more fascinating than they got credit for when searching under the waters of Lake Michigan for shipwrecks: they uncovered a rock with a prehistoric carving of a mastodon, as well as a collection of stones arranged in a stonehenge-like manner.

In modern archaeology, the use of remote sensing techniques is common: scientists regularly survey lakes and soil for hidden objects.

Archaeologists uncovered sunken boats and cars and even a Civil War-era pier at a depth of around 40 feet into Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay, using sonar techniques to search for shipwrecks, but among all these, they found this prehistoric surprise, which a trained eye can guess by looking at the sonar scans photos in this article.

“When you see it in the water, you’re tempted to say this is absolutely real,” said Mark Holley, a professor of underwater archaeology at Northwestern Michigan University College who made the discovery, during a news conference with photos of the boulder on display in 2007. “But that’s what we need the experts to come in and verify.

The boulder with the markings is 3.5 to 4 feet high and about 5 feet long. Photos show a surface with numerous fissures.

Some may be natural while others appear of human origin, but those forming what could be the petroglyph stood out, Holley said.

Viewed together, they suggest the outlines of a mastodon-like back, hump, head, trunk, tusk, triangular-shaped ear and parts of legs, he said.

“We couldn’t believe what we were looking at,” said Greg MacMaster, president of the underwater preserve council.

Specialists shown pictures of the boulder holding the mastodon markings have asked for more evidence before confirming the markings are an ancient petroglyph, said Holley.

“They want to actually see it,” he said. Unfortunately, he added, “Experts in petroglyphs generally don’t dive, so we’re running into a little bit of a stumbling block there.”

If found to be true, the wannabe petroglyph could be as much as 10,000 years old – coincident with the post-Ice Age presence of both humans and mastodons in the upper midwest.

The formation, if authenticated, wouldn’t be completely out of place. Stone circles and other petroglyph sites are located in the area.

The discovery was made back a few years ago, and surprisingly enough the find hasn’t been popularized at all, with little to no information available online, but I’ll be sure to update this post as soon as I can get ahold of more info.

Western Europe: Countries Within Countries

For the most part, the countries of Western Europe seem to be exemplary unitary states, and generally that is what they are. However, there are also strong regional identities, as well as desires for more autonomy and separatist leanings.

In France, for example, there is the problem of the Occitans, who occupy a huge area in the south of the country – as many as seven regions. Even an aggressive Francization policy wasn’t sufficient to solve this problem definitively: all signs in the region are regularly duplicated in Occitanian.

Brittany, in the northwest of the country, also has a strong regional identity. Its inhabitants have their own Celtic language and prefer to call themselves Bretons, rather than French. In the last half of the 20th century, the Breton Liberation Front, which is the armed wing of the Breton Revolutionary Army, carried out terrorist attacks, while barking out slogans advocating independence for their homeland. In Corsica, radical groups haven’t shied away from employing violent means to achieve independence, even in this century.

Each of these separatist communities boasts a political wing – the Occitan Party, the Breton Party, and the Free Corsica Party – whose programs range from demanding greater autonomy to calling for full independence. The last instance of violence occurred in the summer of last year, when the Corsican National Liberation Front (FLNC) claimed responsibility for 16 arson attacks and took credit for bombing summer residences owned by non-Corsicans, as well as construction companies and police cars.

The EU’s economic locomotive, Germany, has a problem in Bavaria – a rich region that occupies about 20% of the total area of the country bordering the Czech Republic and Austria. Bavarians are significantly different from other Germans. Their dialect is actually considered to be a separate language, if not officially recognized as such. Although regional identity is extremely strong, Bavarians rarely speak about separatism, at least publicly. But even in the absence of conflict, Berlin keeps its eye on Munich.

One of Germany’s main parties, the Christian Democratic Union, whose representatives have repeatedly been selected as Germany’s Chancellor, does not contest elections in Bavaria. Instead, it works in an alliance with the purely Bavarian Christian Social Union party, which has absorbed most of the separatist and radical nationalist Bavarian parties over time.

In Italy, the issue of independence is being discussed in the northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto. And these discussions are rather unpleasant for Rome. For example, Venetian politicians have managed to have Venetic recognized as an official language in their region, along with Italian. In March of 2014, 89% of respondents in an online poll conducted in the region supported creating a sovereign Federal Republic of Veneto. However, it hasn’t advanced to a referendum yet. The desire to achieve greater independence in these areas mainly stems from economic factors, but in South Tyrol, the national question also plays a role. This rich German-speaking region, which became part of Italy only after the First World War, has been striving to reunify with Austria for more than a century.

The most likely candidate for disintegration in Western Europe is undoubtedly Belgium. It consists of two regions inhabited by very different peoples: Dutch-speaking Flemings, who make up about 60% of the country’s population, and French-speaking Walloons, who account for 40%. The linguistic division is aggravated by serious economic inequality between the regions – the Flemings have every reason to believe that their southern neighbors in Wallonia, whose unemployment rate is twice as high and GDP per capita a third lower, are living at their expense. Thirty years ago, Flanders’ dissatisfaction with this situation contributed to transforming a unified Belgium into a federation. Now the Flemings are fighting to extend their autonomy further, while the Walloons attempt to repulse their efforts.

And so on, and so forth…

The problem of separatism is even more acute in Eastern Europe, especially in post-Soviet space, where wars have often broken out due to the inability of central and regional authorities to reach agreements. These regions include Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh, and eastern Ukraine.

But separatist aspirations are not confined to Europe. They can also be found in Asia, Africa, and even Oceania. This is especially true in countries with a colonial past, where borders were often drawn under external pressure without regard to local factors and the traditional homelands of tribes and peoples.

The strongest non-European powers today are not without this problem either. The world is well aware of the separatist threats facing China. The United States has recently been increasingly touting claims for independence from Taiwan, Tibet, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Hong Kong, and Macau. A little more than half a century ago, Beijing was also fighting separatism in Inner Mongolia, but demographic trends have rendered this problem less relevant.

That said, even the US itself, which from the outside appears to be one of the most monolithic nations in the word, could easily bedivided into 11 smaller nations. Stories about Americans pushing for the independence of individual states – California and Texas, for example – pop up in the media from time to time, while more exotic movements advocating the independence of entire regions, such as Cascadia or the Republic of New Africa, also exist.

At any rate, a complete list of all the separatist movements around the world would occupy a separate room in a library.

Is there a solution?

Timofey Bordachev, program director at the Valdai Club, in Moscow, believes that “Globally, separatism is a reaction to disassociation, the construction of new fences, and the rise of nationalism.”

“If there was real globalization, there would be no separatism. Borders would be transparent, and people wouldn’t care where they live.

Separatism is a struggle against the nationalism of the titular nation.

Why do residents of Donbass and Eastern Ukraine want to get out from under Kiev’s power? The reason is Ukrainian nationalism. Why did separatists wanting to break with Georgia appear in South Ossetia and Abkhazia? Because Tbilisi tried to impose Georgian nationalism on these regions. That’s it. The reason behind separatism always stems from the nationalism of the larger nation,” the expert told RT.

Nikolay Topornin, associate professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations’ Department of European Law, has a slightly different point of view. According to him, “There is no clear relation between separatist tendencies and global integration processes.”

“Each case has its own history, its own characteristics, its own roots. But yes, most often a whole complex of historical, cultural, religious, linguistic, educational, and economic reasons lies behind each example of separatism,” he pointed out.

In some sense, globalization has contributed to the growth of separatism, according to the expert. One of its consequences has been the appearance of glocalization, with regional differences strengthening, rather than disappearing as expected. “Instead of merging and unifying, trends in the opposite direction are emerging and gaining strength: separatist leanings, increased attention on local differences, heightened interest in ancient traditions, and the revival of dialects,” he said.

Under these conditions, there are only two ways to fight separatism: repression and concessions. Countries often employ both of these methods simultaneously by persecuting separatist-minded activists, while granting separatist regions more autonomy at the same time. However, according to Timofey Bordachev, there is a more universal prescription:

“Is there a theoretical solution to the problem of separatism? Yes. It’s an empire. The only prescription for separatism is an empire: large multinational, multi-confessional countries, such as Russia, China, and, to some extent, the United States.”

Former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce settles with SEC over crypto violations

NBA Hall of Famer Paul Pierce, who won a championship with the Boston Celtics, agreed to settle with the Securities and Exchange Commission for $1.4 million over allegations that he unlawfully touted crypto securities, the regulator announced on Friday.

The action against Pierce involves his public statements about EthereumMax, or EMAX, the same crypto security product that the SEC charged influencer Kim Kardashian with unlawfully touting.

Pierce promoted EthereumMax tokens on Twitter while failing to disclose that he was paid for his promotion with EMAX tokens worth over $244,000, the SEC alleged. Pierce did not admit or deny wrongdoing as part of the settlement and will pay a $1.1 million penalty and disgorge “approximately $240,000,” the SEC said.

Pierce is also barred from promoting any crypto asset securities for three years, the SEC said.

“This case is yet another reminder to celebrities: The law requires you to disclose to the public from whom and how much you are getting paid to promote investment in securities, and you can’t lie to investors when you tout a security,” SEC Chairman Gary Gensler said in a statement.

Pierce’s social media support for EthereumMax also involved allegedly misleading the public about his EMAX holdings, according to the SEC. Pierce allegedly shared misleading screenshots of his EMAX holdings and profits, the SEC said, without disclosing that his personal holdings were actually far lower.

″@espn I don’t need you,” Pierce wrote in a May 2021 Tweet. “I got @ethereum_max I made more money with this crypto in the past month then I did with y’all in a year.”

The SEC said Pierce’s gross compensation from ESPN was over $1 million in 2020.

Representatives for Pierce did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kardashian settled with the SEC in October for $1.2 million over her alleged touting of EMAX, which included a now infamous line, “Are you guys into crypto????”

One of China’s most high-profile bankers, billionaire investor Bao Fan, has gone missing — marking the latest disappearance of a top executive in the tightly controlled country.

China Renaissance Holdings said in a market update Thursday that it has been “unable to contact” its chairman and CEO in recent days.

His disappearance is the latest in a series of cases of prominent Chinese executives going missing with little explanation amid President Xi Jinping’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign.

Shares of the Beijing-based China Renaissance Holdings plunged by as much as 50% in early trading Friday on the news of Bao’s mysterious disappearance, wiping off $357 million in market value. They were down about 28% in the afternoon.

The company said it was “not aware of any information that indicates Mr. Bao’s unavailability” was related to the business of the group.

Bao, Renaissance Bank’s founder and controlling shareholder, has worked on major deals including e-commerce company JD.com’s $2 billion initial public offering and the public listing of short video platform Kuaishou in Hong Kong.

The dealmaker’s disappearance comes after the top-tier investment bank’s president, Cong Lin, was taken away by Chinese authorities in September last year, according to Chinese news media outlet Caixin, which first reported the news.

In 2015 alone, at least five executives became unreachable without notice and little explanation, including Fosun Group chairman Guo Guangchang, the billionaire dubbed “the Warren Buffett of China.”

Fosun later said it was assisting with investigations regarding a personal matter.

Dozens of officials and finance executives at institutions such as Everbright Securities, China Construction Bank and major bank ICBC have been caught up in Beijing’s anti-graft probes.

In 2020, real estate magnate Ren Zhiqiang disappeared for several months after he allegedly criticized Xi over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, reported CNN Business. Ren was eventually sentenced to 18 years on corruption charges.

Wu Xiaohui, chairman of the insurance company Anbang, met a similar fate after being detained for an investigation in 2017.

The same year, billionaire asset manager Xiao Jianhua was abducted from his Four Seasons hotel room in Hong Kong and brought to mainland China, where he was sentenced to 13 years for fraud and corruption.

Bao earlier worked at Credit Suisse and Morgan StanleyHe founded China Renaissance in 2005 and took it public in 2018, raising $346 million.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki on Thursday said she'll be stepping down as head of the world's biggest online video site. In a post on the YouTube blog, the longtime Google executive said the time is right for her to step aside.

"Today, after nearly 25 years here, I've decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about," Wojcicki said in the post, which was also shared with YouTube employees.

Wojcicki will be replaced by Neal Mohan, who previously served as chief product officer at YouTube. Wojcicki said she'll help with the leadership transition and, in the long term, take on an advisory role across Google and parent company Alphabet.

"This will allow me to call on my different experiences over the years to offer counsel and guidance across Google and the portfolio of Alphabet companies," Wojcicki said in the post. "It's an incredibly important time for Google—it reminds me of the early days—incredible product and technology innovation, huge opportunities, and a healthy disregard for the impossible."

Wojcicki was one of Google's earliest employees – she rented her garage to co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were building the search giant in the late 1990s. Before being appointed YouTube CEO in 2014, she was Google's senior vice president of advertising.

Since the 2020 Election, there has been a concerted effort by the Mainstream media to protect the results of the election and label anyone or any entity who challenges the uncertifiable results of the 2020 Election, an election denier.

On Thursday, FOX News filed a brief in this case with Dominion Voting Systems. FOX News uncovered some material issues with Dominion and its voting systems. These items were so serious that Dominion employees expressed concerns about these issues.

Discovery in this case revealed that Dominion’s own employees expressed serious concerns about the security of its machines.

Mark Beckstrand, a Dominion Sales Manager, confirmed that other parties “have gotten ahold of [Dominion’s] equipment illicitly” in the past. Beckstrand identified specific instances in Georgia and North Carolina and testified that a Dominion machine was “hacked” in Michigan. Beckstrand confirmed that these security failures were “reported about in the news.”

And just weeks before the 2020 presidential election, Dominion’s Director of Product Strategy and Security, Eric Coomer, acknowledged in private that “our shit is just riddled with bugs.” Indeed, Coomer had been castigating Dominion’s failures for years. In 2019, Coomer noted that “our products suck.” He lamented that “[a]lmost all” of Dominion’s technological failings were “due to our complete f— up in installation.”

And in another instance, he identified a “*critical* bug leading to INCORRECT results.” Ex.H4, Coomer Email (Jan. 5, 2018). He went on to note: “It does not get much worse than that.” Id. And while many companies might have resolved their errors, Coomer lamented that “we don’t address our weaknesses effectively!”

Other internal documents noted that a the glitch identified by a security expert in Antrim County should be detected in the software. Coomer shared that the expert isn’t entirely wrong.

In addition, after the 2020 Election Dominion received complaints from Georgia noting irregulaties with machine counts that required employees to reprogram the machines.

Norfolk Southern Railroad released and burned five tanker cars of vinyl chloride in East Palestine, Ohio, to prevent explosion after a freight train derailed in the village Feb. 3.

Vinyl chloride, a colorless gas used to make the hard plastic resin found in products like credit cards, is a carcinogen, and burning it releases phosgene, a toxic gas that was used as a weapon during World War I, and hydrogen chloride into the air.

What is acid rain?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, acid raid refers to any type of precipitation that has acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid, that can fall to the ground when it rains or snows. The term also refers to fog, hail or even dust that is acidic.

What causes acid rain?

Acid rain happens when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are emitted into the atmosphere and moved by wind and air currents, the EPA's website says. These pollutants react with water, oxygen and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids, which then mix with water before falling toward the ground.

Since the wind can blow these far distances, acid rain can also be a problem for people not living near the source.

Is there acid rain in Ohio after the train derailment?

Acid rain could have formed after the controlled release and burn of chemicals Feb. 6, Kevin Crist, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and the director of the Air Quality Center at Ohio University, said. If it did form and fall, it would have most likely occurred downwind of East Palestine.

Vinyl chloride in the atmosphere breaks down into hydrochloric acid, a component of acid rain.

"If in that plume you got moisture there may be a local effect on the trees and stuff in that area, but it would be gone now," Crist told The Enquirer Thursday. "I don't think acid rain is going to be an issue."

"I would just trust EPA that they said it's clean. I would think acid rain is probably not an issue they're looking at right now," the professor added. "I think they're more worried about the other exposures."

Could the controlled release of chemicals in East Palestine lead to acid rain in Columbus or Cincinnati? Christ says it's not likely.

Crist explained to The Enquirer that acid rain often becomes a concern when there are continuous emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which typically originate from power plants with large smokestacks that push smoke plumes upward at high velocities.

Norfolk Southern's controlled release of vinyl chloride in East Palestine earlier this month did not occur long enough or have a high enough velocity for that plume to travel outside the affected region, Crist said. Therefore, it's unlikely that cities like Cincinnati or Columbus, both of which are well over 100 miles away from the village, would experience any acid rain from the incident.

"Once it quit burning and once there was no more plume, there wasn't another source of the HCL (hydrochloric acid) and it would dissipate pretty quick," Crist said. "Especially with the rain we just had, it would wash out. I would not expect it to have any impact on Cincinnati at all."

On Wednesday, the Ohio EPA said East Palestine residents can safely drink village water, according to a release issued by Gov. Mike DeWine. The agency tested five wells that feed into East Palestine's municipal water system and no raw contaminants were detected.

Chemicals from the train cars were detected in creeks and streams near the village after the derailment, leading to the deaths of around 3,500 fish. Ohio Department of Natural Resources director Mary Mertz said Tuesday the department hasn't seen an increase in fish deaths since the first couple of days after the incident, and there are no signs of non-aquatic life being harmed.

Is Cincinnati water contaminated?

The plume of butyl acrylate – a compound used in paints, plastics and other products that leaked into the Ohio River after the train derailment – was expected to reach Cincinnati this weekend. On Friday, Gov. Mike DeWine said the plume has dissipated.

Officials with Greater Cincinnati Water Works also said water intakes would be closed off before any detectable levels of chemicals get to the city.

"We do believe that there’s no reason to be concerned about water from the Ohio River, and there’s never really been a reason to be concerned," DeWine said.

All Five Former Memphis Police Officers Plead Not Guilty In Tyre Nichols Case

The officers, who were swiftly fired after the Jan. 7 death of Tyre Nichols, are facing up to 60 years in prison with second-degree murder charges.

All five of the former Memphis Police Department officers charged in the death of Tyre Nichols case pleaded not guilty Friday.

The five officers, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith, Emmitt Martin III, and Desmond Mills Jr. are facing charges of aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, second-degree murder, and official misconduct and official oppression.

The officers, who were swiftly fired after the Jan. 7 death of Tyre Nichols, are facing up to 60 years in prison with second-degree murder charges.

The Shelby County Criminal Court’s Judge James Jones called on both sides to ease their emotions. “We understand that there may be some high emotions in this case, but we ask that you continue to be patient with us,” Jones said.

“It’s important for you all to understand that the state of Tennessee, as well as each one of these defendants, have an absolute right to a fair trial. And I will not allow any behavior that could jeopardize that right,” he added.

Bean’s lawyer contested that the former Memphis officer was merely “doing his job” during Nichols’ death.

Bean’s lawyer added that the only regret the officer had was “being a Memphis police officer on that night, because he wouldn’t have been called to the job.”

All five defendants are out on bail and their next hearing is scheduled for May 1.

Former NFL player Eric Johnson among 8 arrested on human trafficking, gang charges

Eric Johnson, who played six seasons in the NFL from 2000-2005, is among eight accused of trafficking four women and one girl as well as other gang-related charges on Thursday.

Attorney General Chris Carr says the “LOTTO Gang” members are facing charges of trafficking of persons for sexual servitude, violation of the street gang terrorism and prevention act, conspiracy to violate the racketeer influenced and corrupt organizations act (RICO), aggravated assault and kidnapping, per FOX 5 Atlanta.

All eight were indicted by a grand jury on Feb. 8.

Carr said that all eight members of the gang were uncovered following a month-long investigation. He alleges that the LOTTO gang engaged in human trafficking for money to support their members as well as purchase weapons, among other things.

The indictment on the LOTTO gang is extensive, as it found 41 “predicate and overt acts” that were committed between October 2021 and July 2022. In there, it is said the gang kept women who they trafficked under control through violence and held them against their will.

Lab-grown meat, touted as the “cruelty-free” food of the future by everyone from the World Economic Forum to Hollywood mega-celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio, may have a fatal problem, according to a new Bloomberg story.

The problem is that the materials used to make the product – “immortalized cell lines” – replicate forever, just like cancer. Which means, in effect, that they are cancer. Although these cell lines are widely used in scientific research, they’ve never been used to produce food before.

“Immortalized cells are a staple of medical research, but they are, technically speaking, precancerous and can be, in some cases, fully cancerous… [but d]on’t worry: Prominent cancer researchers tell Bloomberg Businessweek that because the cells aren’t human, it’s essentially impossible for people who eat them to get cancer from them, or for the precancerous or cancerous cells to replicate inside people at all.”

Industry types are “confident” that eating such products poses no risk – although there isn’t any hard data – but it’s not difficult to see, even if the products are “proven” safe, how people might be put off by the thought they’re eating a glorified tumor.

All the evidence suggests that the most prominent producers of these new products – including the “Big Three” startups, Believer Meat, Eat Just and Upside Foods – are doing their best to avoid confronting the issue in public. But whether they’ll be able to keep do so after this latest blast of high-profile negative publicity, remains to be seen.

The story comes at a time of growing difficulty for new alternatives to traditional animal products, especially so-called “plant-based meats”.

At the beginning of the month, we reported on the ongoing problems faced by Impossible Foods, which is laying off 20 percent of its workforce, or nearly 140 staff.

Plant-based meats have gone from double-digit growth to double-digit decline in the last year, with sales of refrigerated meat alternatives falling by 10.5 percent for the year to September 4 2022.

In response to another cover story from Bloomberg Businessweek, which labelled plant-based meats “just another fad”, Impossible took the bold step of taking out a full-page advertisement in the New York Times to counter the claims. Impossible’s new CEO, Peter McGuiness has put the company in a more confrontational stance, which includes denying the mounting evidence that his company, and others like it, are in serious trouble.

Beyond Meat, by contrast, has barely even been able to put on a brave face. Shares in the company plunged 75 percent in the first three quarters of the last year, and its flagship pilot collaboration with McDonald’s, the “McPlant Burger”, was discontinued by the fast-food giant.

‘Trust the Government’ EPA Chief Tells Worried East Palestine Residents

The head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) went to the scene of the freight train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, on Thursday and told the community he was from the government and was there to help in the wake of the disaster.

EPA Administrator Michael Regan saw a creek that still reeks of carcinogenic chemicals following the toxic train derailment in the town earlier this month. He sought to reassure skeptical locals the water is fit for drinking and the air safe to breathe in surrounds where just under 5,000 people make their homes near the Pennsylvania state line.

“I’m asking they trust the government. I know that’s hard. We know there’s a lack of trust,” Regan said, according to AP “We’re testing for everything that was on that train.”

Regan’s visit came in the wake of Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) who discovered what appeared to be residual contamination in the water of a creek in the same area, as Breitbart News reported.

“So I’m here at Leslie Run, and there’s dead worms and dead fish all throughout this water,” Vance said in a video posted to his Twitter account on Thursday. “Something I just discovered is that if you scrape the creek bed, it’s like chemical is coming out of the ground.”

For his part Regan used his visit Thursday to announce anyone who is fearful of being in their home should seek testing from the government.

“People have been unnerved. They’ve been asked to leave their homes,” he said, adding that if he lived there, he would be willing to move his family back into the area as long as the testing shows it’s safe.

Those attending the previous night’s informational session had questions about health hazards and demanded more transparency from Norfolk Southern, which did not attend, citing concerns about its staff safety.

Trump Fed Appointees Withheld Vote on Obama Aide for Chicago Fed

Two of the Federal Reserve board’s seven governors abstained from supporting the selection of former Obama aide Austan Goolsbee to become president of the Chicago Fed, according to a record of the vote.

Governors Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller, who were both appointed to the board by former President Donald Trump, withheld their support for Goolsbee, who took up his post last month. The records were obtained by Bloomberg News Friday through a Freedom of Information Act request. The abstentions are unusual, particularly because Waller heads the reserve bank oversight subcommittee at the board, which means he would have been in communication with the Chicago Fed’s directors before they made their final pick.

Unlike selections to the Fed board in Washington, which are presidential nominations subject to Senate confirmation, the heads of the 12 regional Fed banks are picked by their local directors though the board does also have a vote. The abstentions suggests some wariness on the selection by both governors. A spokesperson for the Fed board didn’t have an immediate comment.

Goolsbee was an economic adviser to former President Barack Obama, as well as to Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg during his 2020 presidential run.

Goolsbee has a long record of criticizing Republican policies, and partisan commentary.

Chair Jerome Powell was appointed to the chairmanship by Trump and was nominated for a second term at the Fed’s helm by President Joe Biden. Powell supported the Goolsbee pick, the record shows, as did all other governors, who were nominated by Biden or Obama. The Chicago Fed announced their pick of Goolsbee Dec. 1. He started the job in January and cast his first vote on monetary policy earlier this month. The Wall Street Journal reported the White House is considering Goolsbee as a candidate to replace Vice Chair Lael Brainard, who is departing the board next week to become Biden’s top economic adviser.

Alleged gang members including a former NFL player have been accused of trafficking four women and one girl in Georgia.

State Attorney General Chris Carr said Thursday the charges against the eight defendants include kidnapping, aggravated assault and trafficking of persons for sexual servitude.

Carr's office said the gang, known as LOTTO, an acronym for "Last One To Take Over," recruited members to participate in the human trafficking.

Among the alleged gang leaders is Eric Duane Johnson, who played in the National Football League for the Atlanta Falcons and the Raiders, when the team was based in Oakland.

"Throughout our state, gangs are actively engaged in human trafficking as a primary means to make money, and we are using all available resources to fight back and protect our most vulnerable," Carr also said.

Facebook Auto-Created Pages for ISIS and Al-Qaeda: Study

A "quirk" in the social media giant's programming had the platform creating landing pages for a number of terror groups, a new study has found

Facebook has auto-created the pages of designated terrorist organizations including ISIS and al-Qaeda for years, according to a new report.

The Tech Transparency Project (TTP) investigation comes less than a week before the Supreme Court hears a landmark case, which examines the responsibility of tech companies for policing terrorism online, and shows how the presence of terror groups continues to linger on Facebook despite years of pressure to remove that content.

In the years since the rise of ISIS, the company has taken measures to try and stem the problem of extremism on its platform. But TTP, a tech industry watchdog group, found that a tech “quirk” on Facebook unknowingly auto-generated landing pages for terror organizations when users list them under things like their work, education, local businesses, interests, or even locations—and no page already exists for it.

The outcome was a host of pages (mostly in Arabic, but several in English) featuring posts with images of the jihadist black standard, some with masked men in terrorist garb holding weapons, an al-Qaeda landing spot with an “About” section, and even listing ISIS pages as a “country/region… state”—something the terror group claimed it was after declaring itself as a pseudo-state when it controlled a swath of land between Iraq and Syria.

According to the report, some of the auto-generated pages enabled users to network, tag friends and message each other, with some accruing thousands of likes. (Facebook did provide small directions on the pages labeling them as an “unofficial Page.”)

TTP provided a list of active Facebook links to several of the pages referenced in the report for verification. While TTP finds that the majority of the ISIS pages were generated in the period of 2014 and 2015, four of the pages were created as late as October 2022 and the capability to create more still exists.

VICE News put the page generation to the test and was also able to review a screen-capture video of a user creating a profile from this month where they listed their job as an ISIS terrorist and were still given several options under the banner of the terrorist organization. An additional video that was reviewed, shows the same Facebook user changing their employer to “ ” (ISIS in Arabic), located it in Raqqa, Syria (once a stronghold of the terror group where atrocities were carried out), and Facebook then automatically generating a page for the “Company.”

20 of Jeffrey Epstein's Victims Were Paid Through JPMorgan Chase

Documents that were unsealed as part of a new lawsuit by the US Virgin Islands against JPMorgan Chase have revealed that at least 20 of the victims on Jeffrey Epstein’s island were paid through accounts at the bank. Insider reports that the US Virgin Islands filed a new version of its December lawsuit in January, which had far less redacted information than the prior one. JPMorgan had asked a federal court in Manhattan to dismiss the suit. The new filing states that Epstein had 55 accounts that were worth “hundreds of millions of dollars.” The suit alleges that the abuse and trafficking took place between 2003 and 2019. From 2003 to 2013, the victims were paid over $1 million. The suit provided emails that JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon knew about Epstein’s ties to the bank.

Even more damning is the evidence of Epstein’s friendship with Jes Staley, a JPMorgan executive who resigned as the CEO of Barclay’s once that friendship came to light. Staley was tasked with looking for red flags on Epstein’s account activity. As far back as 2006, Epstein had been labeled a “high-risk” client by the bank. The lawsuit states:

Between 2008 and 2012, Staley exchanged approximately 1,200 emails with Epstein from his JP Morgan email account. These communications show a close personal relationship and ‘profound’ friendship between the two men and even suggest that Staley may have been involved in Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation.

Some of those emails contained photos of women. According to The Epoch Times, one email exchange included the following after Staley visited Epstein’s island:

Epstein: What character would you like next?

Staley: Beauty and the Beast

Epstein: Well one side is available.

In another email, Staley said, “I realize the danger in sending this email. But it was great to be able, today, to give you, in New York City, a long heartfelt, hug.”

Wire transfers occurred shortly after a visit by Staley to Epstein in Florida, and following a request by Staley for “something” in London. The lawsuit states, “None of the emails between Epstein and Staley were flagged in connection with risk reviews of Epstein’s accounts. Moreover, JP Morgan allowed Staley to remain a decisionmaker on Epstein’s accounts. JP Morgan even tasked Staley to discuss the human trafficking allegations with Epstein.”

Even as late as 2013, the bank reported that there was nothing unusual about Epstein’s accounts. However, the filing alleges that between 2003 and 2019, “Epstein also withdrew more than $775,000 in cash over that time frame from JP Morgan accounts, especially significant as Epstein was known to pay for ‘massages,’ or sexual encounters, in cash. Financial information also reflects payments drawn from JP Morgan accounts of nearly $1.5 million to known recruiters, including to the MC2 modeling agency, and another $150,000 to a private investigative firm.”

In addition to civil penalties, authorities have asked that the court order the bank to pay fees to the government and the court and provide restitution of “all ill-gotten gains.” They are also seeking an injunction to prevent JPMorgan from committing any further illegal conduct, or concealing it.

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) – A small device is ready to be used in a small town to make a big impact.

East Palestine is excited to make an important medical device available to all 4,700 residents. On Sunday, there will be a special meeting to share more or start signing up.

The MyID program is ready to roll out in East Palestine. It’s a medical information system that helps first responders provide care.

“It gives us that rapid information that we may need should somebody be unresponsive or having some kind of medical emergency,” said East Palestine Fire Chief Keith Drabick.

MyID provides wearable devices or key FOBs that have QR codes. Emergency responders use a camera phone to access important medical information. It shows them the underlying medical conditions people have supplied about allergies, medications and emergency contacts. That information could impact treatment decisions if a person can’t say it. All of the information is HIPPA compliant.

“We’re not doing this to gain anybody’s information, to try and steal anybody’s information. We’re doing this to help the public in medical emergencies,” Drabick said.

MyID is available in East Palestine and Unity Township. The fire department will demonstrate it to other departments that provide backup. MyID can be used anywhere.

On Sunday, residents can learn more during a special meeting at the East Palestine Community Center.

“We want to bring people in to get signed up, to pick their device that they want, and just so we can see who all is interested in it,” said Darlene Chapman with the East Palestine Fire Department.

People who are ready can sign up and pick their device. It’s free. The village has $5,000 in donations to cover the first phase of 250 devices.

“Anybody that skeptical? Please come on down. Sit down, talk to us. We’ll be happy to show you everything that goes on with it. We’ll be happy to show you how secure it is,” Drabick said.

People who sign up on Sunday could get their devices within a couple of weeks, and that’s when MyID will go live.

Any phone camera can open it, but there’s no Social Security numbers or insurance numbers that are included in the information.

The special meeting goes from noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday. It’s more of a stop by and get information session.

A panel of Canadian lawmakers has called for the country’s assisted suicide program to be extended to minors, even in cases where their parents object to the decision to end their lives.

The special committee of MPs and senators, which was charged with reviewing Ottawa’s so-called “medical assistance in dying” (MAiD) program, issued a series of recommendations this week in Canada’s House of Commons. The report urged the government to amend its law on assisted suicide to make the service available to minors deemed to have “the requisite decision-making capacity.”

Assisted suicide should be available only to “mature minors” whose “natural death is reasonably foreseeable,” the committee said. The government would need to establish standards for assessing a youngster’s capacity to make such a decision, the report added, but the lawmakers offered no specifics on how imminent a person’s death would need to be for the government to help end their life.

The committee also suggested that parents or guardians should be consulted on their child’s suicide decision “where appropriate.” However, Ottawa also should require that “the will of a minor who is found to have the requisite decision-making capacity take priority,” according to the report.

Another recommendation called for the government to “undertake consultations with minors on the topic of MAiD, including minors with terminal illnesses, minors with disabilities, minors in the child welfare system and Indigenous minors.”

Critics of Canada’s MAiD program blasted the panel’s findings. “Unhappy teenagers are such a burden on the welfare state that Parliament believes doctors should be paid to murder them,” podcast host Kevin Michael Grace said.

The committee issued its report after hearing from nearly 150 witnesses, Canada’s Global News reported on Thursday. Many of the witnesses argued that minors are already allowed to make decisions about withholding medical treatment, hastening their death in some cases, and the level of suffering they endure from a terminal illness isn’t a function of age.

More than 30,000 Canadians have died by assisted suicide since it was legalized for people with terminal illnesses in 2016. The program was expanded in 2021 to include adults with serious and chronic medical conditions, even if their malady wasn’t life-threatening. Lawmakers were set this year to consider extending MAiD eligibility to people suffering solely from a mental illness, but Attorney General David Lametti announced the tabling of that bill earlier this month.

Popular Eagles Build New Home at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center

The most famous pair of American bald eagles at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center have returned to their prominent position at the Florida spaceport – nestled in a tree along Kennedy Parkway, just a couple miles south of the Vehicle Assembly Building.

No, it’s not the same nest – or even the same tree – that thousands of Kennedy employees and visitors have come to know over the decades. Located within 100 yards of the previous nest, the eagles’ new home is closer to Kennedy Parkway, providing an opportunity for even more passers-by to view the majestic birds in their natural habitat.

Storms during the non-nesting season (roughly April through August of 2021) badly damaged the original nest, which was built in 1973 and was used almost every year from 1975 until 2022. However, late last year, the eagles were spotted nearby carrying nesting material to the new location. The pair returned a few months ago, completing and moving into their brand new home.

“You always wonder where they’re going to rebuild. And the cool thing is they built it closer to the road, which creates more wildlife activity for people to see up close,” said Russell Lowers, a wildlife biologist with 32 years of experience at Kennedy. “That’s why I’m so excited – because they actually rebuilt the nest closer to viewing by the general public.”

A combination of storms and pine bark beetles killed the original tree about five years ago. But the eagles continued to use the dead tree, a behavior that isn’t uncommon, Lowers explained. That’s until storm winds collapsed about half of the nest off the back side of the tree. That apparently was the last straw – or stick – for the eagles, who chose to set up their new accommodations.

Typically, eagles do not build within a mile of another eagle’s nest, Lowers said, making it a safe assumption that it is the same mating pair returning year after year. Since eagles have an average lifespan of 20-25 years, and the original nest was nearly 50 years old, these two haven’t been spending winters at Kennedy since the 1970s. Of course, the current eagle pair could be from the same family “tree.”

Their timing is pretty good, too. Biologists and scientists noted the eagles were first spotted at Kennedy within a day of the previous year’s arrival – for the past eight years running.

“It’s like a contest,” Lowers joked.

For nearly 20 years, Lowers and Senior Geographic Information Systems Analyst Resa Cancro have been monitoring this territory, as well as several other territories throughout Kennedy, in helicopters flown by NASA pilots. According to the most recent survey, Kennedy currently is home to 39 eagle territories, 33 of which are active or potentially active. Records from the early 1990s were less than a third of these numbers.

“These numbers represent recovery of a population,” said Chief Scientist and Wildlife Biologist Dave Breininger.

During the most recent helicopter flight, an eagle from Kennedy’s famous duo was seen sitting in the new nest, though it is not yet known whether she was incubating eggs. Another flight is scheduled later this month in hopes of making that determination.

Documentation during flights includes nest occupation, how many eaglets are produced, and fledging from the nest. Eagles incubate their eggs for about 35 days on average, then fledge at eight to 14 weeks of age. They are generally seen on center from about September to March. Most Florida eagles summer near the Chesapeake Bay or in the coastal plain of North Carolina from April to August.

“I have worked out here since 1984 and I will still slow down and look; honestly, it gives me chills,” Cancro said. “I don’t see how anybody cannot just be in awe. They’re just so majestic. Every day … even the five-millionth time, I still stop.”

Motorists also should stop – or at least slow down – if they spot wildlife too close to the road. Young eagles are still gaining experience and the adult ones can be a bit stubborn, Breininger said.

“They’re often eating road carcasses,” Breininger said. “Sub-adults are vulnerable to increased road mortality and adult eagles sometimes have no desire to move out of the way. Unlike some birds, they’re pretty bold.”

Police allegedly told Christo Grozev that he and his family posed a public security risk

Bulgarian investigative journalist Christo Grozev has reportedly been barred from the upcoming British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards in London after he was deemed a security risk.

Writing on Twitter on Friday, Grozev said he was “surprised to discover that my whole family and I have all been banned by British police from attending this weekend’s BAFTA awards where the documentary ‘Navalny’ is nominated.”

The journalist, who serves as Bellingcat’s director and lead Russia investigator, took part in the creation of the CNN-produced documentary, which focuses on jailed Russian opposition figure and Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny. The film has also been nominated for an Academy Award for ‘best documentary’.

Grozev claimed that the explanation he was given for the ban was that he and his family “represent a public security risk.”

“I understand the need to keep the public safe (although I don’t understand how my son or teenage daughter constitute risk to the public). But moments like this show the growing dangers to independent journalists around the world,” he wrote.

Grozev claimed that dangers for journalists don’t only stem from “murderous dictators,” but also from having their voices “hushed by the civilized world they are trying to serve.”

In July, Grozev was accused by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) of working with Ukrainian intelligence services and NATO in an attempt to recruit Russian pilots. According to the FSB’s Center for Public Relations, Grozev took part in an operation to “hijack aircraft of Russia’s Armed Forces” by offering pilots money and guarantees of EU citizenship, in exchange for landing Russian aircraft at Ukrainian-controlled airfields.

The journalist denied being an operative for Kiev, but admitted he was involved in the story as a filmmaker as his Bellingcat team was making a documentary about the “wackiest counter-counter-intel operations of all time.”

Grozev has been placed on the FSB’s federal wanted list, while Bellingcat has been designated a “foreign agent” and banned for posing a “threat to the security of the Russian Federation.”
