Not AF1 Joe in 09-0017 USAF C-32A departed JBA for Delaware-New Castle Cty Airport

According to published schedule- Cap#3

The blue trace you see is from a tanker that had been circling over the Not AF1 Joe is already in Delaware position and has already left the scene-cap#2 SWATH11

Joe has been confirmed leaving early before so dunno if this is yet another one of those occasions and they are simply flying an AC over to make it look good or he is really on it.

If this has not habbened in the past I would think nothing of it but since it has (at least twice) just something to ponder on.

These support tankers do arrive early in most cases but not a full 2 hours and already departed before the arrival of the AC (in this case 09-0017) it is supposedly supporting.

Moar wtf from this administration.

Central bank plans unlimited bond purchases after benchmark yield hits 6-year high

Upward pressure driving U.S. and European interest rates higher has reached Japan, with the benchmark 10-year yield nearing the threshold that could prompt the Bank of Japan to step in with an emergency market operation.

The yield on newly issued 10-year government bonds touched a six-year high of 0.20% at one point Friday, moving closer to the 0.25% upper target set by the central bank. If the yield moves further closer to the cap, the BOJ will likely carry out an operation to purchase an unlimited amount of bonds at a fixed rate to ease the pressure.

With the rate rising in the U.S. on Friday, the market sees the possibility of the 10-year yield moving closer to 0.25% soon.

By conducting an emergency operation for the first time in three and a half years, the BOJ plans to brush off market speculation that the central bank will be forced to follow its Western peers and tighten policy, and signal its commitment to monetary easing.

In the U.S., the 10-year yield climbed 10 basis points to 1.93% at one point to touch a two-year high on Friday. The jobs report and wage increases announced that day exceeded market expectations, fanning speculation that the Federal Reserve will raise rates at a faster pace than expected.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde on Thursday said she is no longer ruling out a rate hike within the year, sending European bond yields higher.

Japan is now an outlier. With the 2% inflation target still out of reach, the BOJ is sticking with monetary easing. But speculation is rife among investors that the BOJ will eventually shift course to follow its Western peers, which in turn has put upward pressure on JGB yields.

Under a yield curve control scheme introduced in 2016, the BOJ is managing bond purchases to keep the 10-year yield at around 0%. But lately the BOJ has been allowing fluctuations of up to 25 basis points on either side of that to make sure bond market activity does not dry up.

The BOJ is expected to opt for an operation in which it will purchase an unlimited amount of government bonds at a set rate, like 0.25%. This will help ease the upward pressure on the yield. If the pressure does not ease right away, the BOJ will likely carry out multiple operations.

BOJ Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda has reiterated the bank will continue with powerful monetary easing measures. He does not foresee the rise in the Consumer Price Index reaching 2% anytime soon.

If the BOJ does not act when the yield surpasses 0.25%, the market will interpret that as allowing a rise in interest rates, spurring speculation about monetary tightening. Conducting an operation would thus serve to confirm the BOJ's unflagging commitment to monetary easing.

Germany's Olaf Scholz goes to Washington amid criticism

There's a cloud of ambiguity hanging around Chancellor Olaf Scholz as he makes his first trip to visit President Joe Biden. In Germany, critics and social media jokers have been making snide remarks about Scholz's apparent reluctance to make forceful statements on the Ukraine crisis. ("Someone has to tell Scholz he's switched to mute," as one user remarked on Twitter.) NATO allies and Scholz's political opponents at home have expressed frustration at Germany's unwillingness to deliver weapons to Ukraine.

Scholz's cause hasn't exactly been helped by the pronouncements of his party colleague and predecessor as Social Democrat chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, a man never shy about publicly defending his friend Vladimir Putin: Schröder seemed to justify the Russian troop-buildup as reaction to NATO maneuvers while accusing Ukraine of "saber-rattling."

Meanwhile, the German media has speculated about cracks in transatlantic relations: Der Spiegel reported in late January that Scholz had found no time in his busy schedule to meet with Biden. The story was quickly and vehemently quashed by the White House.

This Is the Only Goldman Banker Standing Trial for 1MDB

Day after day, the scene has replayed: Roger Ng, a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. banker, left his Manhattan apartment and, with an electronic monitor strapped to his ankle, headed downtown to build the case that might save him from prison.

It’s been nearly three years since Ng landed in the U.S. from southeast Asia to face federal charges over his role in a scheme to loot billions from the Malaysian fund known as 1MDB. In that time Malaysia’s former prime minister has been convicted of crimes while Goldman has paid $5 billion in fines and apologized for breaking the law, one of the biggest black marks in its 153-year history.

Now, at long last, Ng is about to get his day in court – as the only person in all of Goldman Sachs to stand trial in the U.S. for a scandal that stretched from Singapore to Hollywood to Wall Street and beyond. He has pleaded not guilty. Free on a $20 million bond, Ng, 49, has been confined to his apartment except for runs on Manhattan’s West Side, trips to the grocery store and his lawyer’s office. He has spent his days at that office poring over millions of documents in the sprawling case. He sits at a desk that was previously occupied by “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, who was sentenced to prison for securities fraud in 2018, in another high-profile legal drama. Ng’s trial, delayed for two years because of the pandemic, is finally set to begin with jury selection Monday and is expected to last at least five weeks. Ng faces as many as 30 years in prison. “No one expected him to be here for three years,” his lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, said at a recent hearing. Ng and Agnifilo declined to comment for this story. While his defense team has cast Ng as a deputy to star Goldman banker Tim Leissner and the first to warn compliance about Malaysian financier Jho Low, prosecutors say Ng played a critical role in a bribe-paying and money-laundering scheme.

By now the broad outlines of the 1MDB scandal, or at least its most salacious details, are well known on Wall Street. There is the gob-smacking dollar figure: $2.7 billion supposedly plundered, the scheme greased by bribes to various officials in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi. Some of the money went to a $200 million superyacht. Some went to paintings by Monet, van Gogh and Basquiat. Still more went to finance a movie based on other real-life market mayhem: “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

The U.S. says the “brazen” scheme couldn’t have been pulled off without help of bankers at Goldman Sachs. Ng, the former head of investment banking in Malaysia, is charged with helping Low and Leissner launder billions of dollars embezzled from 1Malaysia Development Berhad, or 1MDB. He’s also charged with violating U.S. anti-bribery laws. Low, the alleged mastermind of the fraud, has denied wrongdoing and remains at large. Leissner secretly pleaded guilty in 2018 to conspiring to violate U.S. anti-bribery laws, as well as to engaging in a money laundering conspiracy. Leissner agreed to cooperate with the U.S. and is expected to be a star witness at Ng’s trial.

Ng has said he was the first to inform Goldman Sachs compliance about Low, sending “red flag warnings” not to do business with him. Agnifilo, Ng’s lawyer, has also said Leissner cooperated with the U.S. and implicated Ng to save himself. Agnifilo contends that Ng played no role in the fraud. “Roger is a relatively insignificant figure caught between the Department of Justice and the government of Malaysia in a case of overwhelming significance,” Agnifilo said in a 2019 interview. “He’s really the yo-yo between these two countries.”

The U.S. has reached a deal with Japan that will lift a portion of the additional 25% tariff imposed on steel imports under former President Donald Trump in 2018.

Washington will introduce a tariff-rate quota under the agreement announced Monday, suspending the duties on Japanese steel shipments up to 1.25 million tons a year the average imported in 2018 and 2019 starting April 1. "Today's announcement builds on the deal we struck with the EU and will further help us rebuild relationships with our allies around the world as we work to fight against China's unfair trade practices," U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a statement.

The Trump administration imposed the additional 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum from markets like Japan and the European Union under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which allows the president to restrict shipments seen to pose national security concerns. Japanese steel exports to America fell to around 720,000 tons in 2020 from around 1.73 million tons in 2017, before the additional duties were imposed.

Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda and Raimondo had agreed to swiftly resolve the issue during a meeting in November. No new tariff-free quotas will be applied to aluminum shipments for now. Waivers for certain steel and aluminum imports without readily available American-made alternatives will remain in place. Many Japanese aluminum products already benefit from this framework. The two sides are expected to continue discussions on the remaining levies, with Japan urging the U.S. to completely scrap the Trump-era tariffs on both steel and aluminum.

But there is resistance in the U.S. against a further easing of import restrictions. Washington pushed for a partial deal with Tokyo at this time, likely in part to avoid making the announcement right before the midterm elections coming up in the fall.

The U.S. also agreed in October to introduce a tariff-rate quota for the EU, which took effect in January. It agreed with the U.K. last month to start negotiations to resolve trade issues.

Ukraine Calls Bank Subpoenas by Russia’s Tatneft Dangerous ‘Pretext’

Ukraine is asking a U.S. judge to block subpoenas issued to 52 banks by Russian oil company Tatneft, claiming they’re “a pretext” to demand critical financial information at a time when Russia is amassing troops along the border with its Eastern European neighbor.

“Especially in the context of Russia’s imminently threatened invasion of Ukraine, a Russian oil company with close ties to the Russian government should not be permitted to use discovery in aid of a judgment as a pretext for demanding sensitive information bearing on Ukraine’s military, national security, and monetary stability,” Ukraine said in a court filing in Manhattan Tuesday.

Ukraine said Tatneft issued the subpoenas as part of an effort to enforce a 2017 U.S. judgment for $172 million, which confirmed an arbitration award against the country. Ukraine claims Tatneft has declined to enforce the award for years.

“Instead, it has turned to the U.S. for sweeping worldwide discovery about the assets and financial transactions of Ukraine and third parties with key roles in strategic industries like defense, energy, transportation, and communications,” Ukraine said. The nation asked a judge to block the subpoenas or at least narrowed to exclude requests for sensitive information.

The case is In re Subpoenas Served on JSC State Export-Import Bank of Ukraine, 22-mc-00036, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).

NY Fed Q4 Report: Total Household Debt Increases to $15.6 trillion

From the NY Fed: Robust Mortgage and Auto Loan Originations Help Drive Total Household Debt to $15.58 Trillion in Q4 2021.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Center for Microeconomic Data today issued its Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit. The Report shows that total household debt increased by $333 billion (2.2%) to $15.58 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2021. The total debt balance reflects an increase of $1 trillion during 2021 and is $1.4 trillion higher than at the end of 2019. In nominal terms, the 2021 total increase in overall debt is the largest seen since 2007. The Report is based on data from the New York Fed's nationally representative Consumer Credit Panel.

Mortgage balances rose by $258 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021 and stood at $10.93 trillion at the end of December. Credit card balances increased by $52 billion, representing the largest quarterly increase observed in the 22-year history of the data. However, credit card balances remain $71 billion lower than at the end of 2019. Auto loan balances increased by $15 billion, consistent with the previous two quarters. Student loan balances contracted by $8 billion, remaining roughly flat in nominal terms at the end of 2021 after almost two decades of steady increases. In total, non-housing balances grew by $74 billion.

Household debt previously peaked in 2008 and bottomed in Q3 2013. Unlike following the great recession, there wasn't a huge decline in debt during the pandemic. Aggregate household debt balances increased by $333 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021, a 2.2% rise from 2021Q3, and the largest increase since 2007 in both percentage and nominal terms. The overall delinquency rate was unchange in Q4. From the NY Fed: increase of $1 trillion during 2021, and stand $1.4 trillion higher than at the end of 2019. Aggregate delinquency rates were flat in the fourth quarter of 2021 but remain very low, after declining sharply through the beginning of the pandemic. The fourth quarter saw a continued decline in late delinquency offset by a small increase in the share of earlier delinquency. The low delinquency rates have reflected forbearances (provided by both the CARES Act and voluntarily offered by lenders), which protect borrowers’ credit records from the reporting of skipped or deferred payments but are now winding down. As of late December, 2.7% of outstanding debt was in some stage of delinquency, a 2.0 percentage point decrease from the fourth quarter of 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States. Of the $424 billion of debt that is delinquent, $298 billion is seriously delinquent (at least 90 days late or “severely derogatory”, which includes some debts that have been removed from lenders’ books but upon which they continue to attempt collection).

The credit scores of newly originated mortgages had increased in the early part of the pandemic, but have declined in recent quarters, yet remain very high and reflect a continuing high quality of newly opened mortgages as well as a higher share of refinances. The median credit score on newly originated auto loans was roughly flat. ... In all, 2021 saw historically high volumes of new extensions of installment credit for both mortgages and auto loans. Mortgage originations, measured as appearances of new mortgage balances on consumer credit reports and which include refinances, were at $1 trillion in 2021Q4. 'The Largest Financial Seizure Ever' - DoJ Announces Billions In Bitcoin From 2016 Bitfinex Hack Recovered, Couple Arrested

In what the Department of Justice is calling 'the largest financial seizure ever', the U.S. seized about $3.6 billion in Bitcoin stolen during a 2016 hack of the Bitfinex currency exchange.

On August 2, 2016, the exchange Bitfinex was hacked for approximately 119,756 BTC. Notably, the stolen cryptocurrency was valued at $71 million at the time of the theft, is now valued at $4.5 billion, officials said. Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, were arrested in Manhattan on Tuesday morning and face federal charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the United States. “Today’s arrests, and the Department’s largest financial seizure ever, show that cryptocurrency is not a safe haven for criminals,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement. “In a futile effort to maintain digital anonymity, the defendants laundered stolen funds through a labyrinth of cryptocurrency transactions.”

According to court documents, Lichtenstein and Morgan allegedly conspired to launder the proceeds of 119,754 bitcoin that were stolen from Bitfinex’s platform after a hacker breached Bitfinex’s systems and initiated more than 2,000 unauthorized transactions. Those unauthorized transactions sent the stolen bitcoin to a digital wallet under Lichtenstein’s control.

Over the last five years, approximately 25,000 of those stolen bitcoin were transferred out of Lichtenstein’s wallet via a complicated money laundering process that ended with some of the stolen funds being deposited into financial accounts controlled by Lichtenstein and Morgan.

According to DOJ, the couple used sophisticated techniques, including “using fictitious identities to set up online accounts; utilizing computer programs to automate transactions, a laundering technique that allows for many transactions to take place in a short period of time; depositing the stolen funds into accounts at a variety of virtual currency exchanges and darknet markets and then withdrawing the funds.”

The remainder of the stolen funds, comprising more than 94,000 bitcoin, remained in the wallet used to receive and store the illegal proceeds from the hack. After the execution of court-authorized search warrants of online accounts controlled by Lichtenstein and Morgan, special agents obtained access to files within an online account controlled by Lichtenstein.

Those files contained the private keys required to access the digital wallet that directly received the funds stolen from Bitfinex, and allowed special agents to la^vfully seize and recover more than 94,000 bitcoin that had been stolen from Bitfinex.

The recovered bitcoin was valued at over S3.6 billion at the time of seizure.

Lichtenstein and Morgan face up to 20 years in prison for the money laundering charges they face. In addition, they face an additional sentence of up to five years for conspiracy to defraud the U.S., according to the Justice Department statement.

Poland Hikes Rate to Highest Since 2013 to Fight Inflation

Poland increased borrowing costs for a fifth consecutive month to an almost nine-year high as pressure grows on the central bank to tame record inflation in eastern Europe’s largest economy. The council that sets interest rates lifted the benchmark 50 basis points to 2.75% on Tuesday, in line with the median estimate of 32 economists in a Bloomberg survey. The central bank’s governor, Adam Glapinski, will brief reporters on the decision on Wednesday.

The bank will continue to act against inflation in the coming months, the Monetary Policy Council said in a statement. The body also raised the main reserve requirement to 3.5% from 2% and said a stronger zloty would be coherent with the bank’s policy.

The currency briefly reversed gains against the euro after the decision, only to strengthen 0.1% to 4.5329 per euro at 4:26 p.m. in Warsaw. That put its gains this month at 1.1%, the best run in emerging markets after Russia’s ruble.

Polish rate setters began raising rates in October lagging peers in the region in an abrupt turnaround that surprised markets. And even after Tuesday’s decision, Polish negative real interest rates are still among the lowest in Europe.

Since then, Glapinski who has been nominated by President Andrzej Duda to lead the bank for another six-year term has called for increased tightening, shedding his previously dovish stance.

It is not unreasonable to conclude that surgical and cloth masks, used as they currently are being used (without other forms of PPE protection), have no impact on controlling the transmission of Covid-19 virus. Current evidence implies that face masks can be actually harmful. The body of evidence indicates that face masks are largely ineffective.

My focus is on COVID face masks and the prevailing science that we have had for nearly 20 months. Yet I wish to address this mask topic at a 50,000-foot level on the lockdown restrictive policies in general. I build on the backs of the fine work done by Gupta, Kulldorff, and Bhattacharya on the Great Barrington Declaration (GBD) and similar impetus by Dr. Scott Atlas (advisor to POTUS Trump) who, like myself, was a strong proponent for a focused type of protection that was based on an age-risk stratified approach.

Because we saw very early on that the lockdowns were the single greatest mistake in public health history. We knew the history and knew they would not work. We also knew very early of COVID’s risk stratification. Sadly, our children will bear the catastrophic consequences and not just educationally, of the deeply flawed school closure policy for decades to come (particularly our minority children who were least able to afford this). Many are still pressured to wear masks and punished for not doing so.

I present the masking ‘body of evidence’ below (n=167 studies and pieces of evidence), comprised of comparative effectiveness research as well as related evidence and high-level reporting. To date, the evidence has been stable and clear that masks do not work to control the virus and they can be harmful and especially to children.

Last Friday, a reporter asked White House press secretary Jen Psaki to respond to the Johns Hopkins covid study showing lockdowns provided no real benefit in terms of disease prevention.

In response, Psaki dodged addressing the study directly, but then pivoted to claiming that the Biden administration had never pushed lockdowns.

“We are not pushing lockdowns,” she insisted.

“We’ve not been pro-lockdown - most of the lockdowns actually happened under the previous President.”

We have now reached the point in the media and political narrative where the party of lockdowns realizes lockdowns are increasingly unpopular and so now claims it never supported lockdowns at all.

But how can Psaki get away with saying this?

We all know that Joe Biden has always supported lockdowns. Well, that's not quite it, and she's not completely wrong. By the time Biden was actually sworn in as president, he had already stopped pushing for lockdowns as a continued anticovid option.

On the other hand, it is certainly true that as late as early November 2020, high-ranking Biden advisors were still holding up lockdowns as a possibility that fall and winter. For example, on November 11, 2020, Dr. Michael Osterholm, a member of Biden’s Covid-19 Advisory Board, suggested the country might require a “lockdown for 4 to 6 weeks” and recommended the US government spend additional trillions to “pay for a package right now to cover all of the lost wages for individual workers.”

Osterholm also referenced an August 2020 column he cowrote with Minneapolis Fed president Neel Kashkari in which the authors concluded, “To be effective, the lockdown has to be as comprehensive and strict as possible.”

For his part, Biden was keeping lockdowns very much on the table at least as late as August 2020.

Biden declared in a joint interview with Kamala Harris that if covid numbers increased again “I would shut it down. I would listen to the scientists…. We’re going to do whatever it takes to save lives.”

Twitter Tells U.S. Senator It’s Cutting Ties to Swiss Tech Firm

Twitter Inc. told a U.S. senator it is cutting ties with a European technology company that helped it send sensitive passcodes to its users via text message.

The social media firm said in a disclosure to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, that it is “transitioning” its service away from working with Mitto AG, according to a Wyden aide.

A co-founder of Mitto operated a service that helped governments secretly surveil and track mobile phones, according to former employees and clients, as Bloomberg News and London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism reported in December. Twitter cited media reports as the motivating factor behind its decision, the Wyden aide said.

Several other companies have allegedly already cut ties with Mitto. In recent weeks, messaging companies Kaleyra and MessageBird have both ceased commercial relationships with Mitto, according to three people familiar with the matter.

A Twitter representative declined to comment.

A spokesman for Mitto, which is based in Zug, Switzerland, said in an emailed statement that the company “does not disclose information about its business partners, through any channel – official or unofficial – full stop. Generally, such agreements are mutual in nature, with both parties agreeing to protect the privacy and integrity of the other.”

Closely held Mitto works with leading telecommunications companies to deliver text messages in bulk to billions of phones around the world, according to its website and promotional documents. Mitto sends out automated text messages for such things as sales promotions, appointment reminders and two-factor security codes needed to log in to online accounts.

However Mitto’s co-founder and chief operating officer, Ilja Gorelik, was also allegedly selling access to Mitto’s networks to secretly locate people via their mobile phones, and in some cases obtain their call logs, Bloomberg reported. The Mitto venture also allegedly involved exploiting weaknesses in a telecommunications protocol known as SS7, or Signaling System 7, a sort of switchboard for the global telecommunications industry.

A Mitto representative previously said that the company had no involvement in any surveillance business and had launched an internal investigation “to determine if our technology and business has been compromised” and would take corrective action if necessary. Mitto representatives allegedly informed some clients that Gorelik was no longer involved at the company.

Students Suspended on Mask Mandate Attempt to Serve Affidavits to Loudoun County School Board

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va.—Dozens of suspended students in Loudoun County attempted to serve the school board members a stack of notarized affidavits accusing the board of maladministration at a school board meeting on Feb. 8.

School board chair Jeff Morse asked the students to give the documents to the staff instead of receiving the affidavits. Superintendent Scott Zieger left the board room afterward and didn’t return until the superintendent’s report session after public comment.

An hour later at about 9 p.m., Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Chief Operations Officer Kevin Lewis accepted the documents without signing to acknowledge receipt. Wayde Byard, the LCPS spokesperson, told The Epoch Times, “The school board always welcomes written public input.” He added that LCPS would examine the papers.

The affidavits signed by Virginia citizens acting “sui juris”—“in their own rights”—by the U.S. Constitution ask the board to stop all critical race theory (CRT) related programs, to end “unconstitutional COVID-19 mandates,” and to provide full disclosure of sexual abuses in the school system.

CRT is a quasi-Marxist analytical framework that views America as systemically racist. LCPS has repeatedly said that CRT isn’t taught in its classrooms and that it presents a standard curriculum designated by the Virginia Department of Education. However, parents say that CRT ideas are embedded in the school policies, teachers’ training, and social emotional learning programs.

Rene Camp, one of the organizers of the effort, told The Epoch Times that the school board has ignored parents’ demands so far. Therefore, this new action aims at forcing a response.

The board will either respond with backup documents or ignore them, equivalent to admitting wrongdoing accused in the affidavits, according to Camp. Each participant signed nine copies of the paper, one copy for superintendent Scott Ziegler and eight copies for all school board members except for John Beatty, the only school board member who voted against keeping the mask mandate before Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s mask-optional executive order took effect on Jan. 24.

Megan Rafalski, leader of the education task force on behalf of various grassroots parent organizations in Loudoun County, told The Epoch Times that they planned for 20 parents joining the effort, but the final count reached 65.

When students handed the papers over to Lewis, Rafalski told him that the parents paid over $1,000 for the 585 copies of affidavits.

On Sunday, when parents gathered to prepare the affidavits, the mood was determined yet heavyhearted. On the previous Friday, the Arlington Circuit Court ruled a temporary injunction for the seven school boards to keep their mask mandate until a final ruling. Loudoun is not among the seven school boards that sued Gov. Youngkin over his mask-optional executive order signed on Jan. 15.

A lot has happened between then and now. On Monday, the Supreme Court of Virginia dismissed a lawsuit by Chesapeake parents who asked the court to halt Youngkin’s mask-optional executive order and restore the mask mandate in their school district. Then on Tuesday, the Democrat-controlled state Senate passed a bill to end mask mandates in Virginia public schools. The bill is expected to pass the Republican-majority state House and soon arrive at Youngkin’s desk.

Muriel Groce, who has two girls currently suspended from Blue Ridge Middle School, arrived early at what would be her first-ever school board meeting. “This is a primary example of how keeping the faith for the long battle just to be victorious and don’t give up hope,” Muriel told The Epoch Times about her feelings after learning of the passing of the state Senate bill.

“I couldn’t be happier about the news about the bill passing in the Senate. And I hope everything will follow through just in line. And we’re just so excited,” she added. “We’ve just had a rough, rough go of it, my kids especially. They have been suspended. Emotionally, the toll is very great.”

Muriel’s 11-year-old daughter Madeline told The Epoch Times, “I just want to go back [to school] without a mask.”

Dozens of Republicans again call for Joe Biden to take cognitive test

Dozens of Republican lawmakers are once again calling for President Biden to take a cognitive test, urging him to “follow the example set by former President Trump.” 

The 38 Republicans, led by Trump’s former White House doctor, Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Md.), sent a letter to the president on Tuesday “express[ing] concern with your current cognitive state” and asking the 79-year-old to take the test.

"We believe that, regardless of gender, age, or political party, all Presidents should follow the example set by former President [Donald] Trump to document and demonstrate sound mental abilities,” they wrote.

“While you underwent your annual physical exam on November 19, 2021, you either did not have a cognitive test or those results were withheld from the public. White House Physician Kevin O’Connor, D.O., attested to you being ‘fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency’ in a purely physical manner; however, we are worried about your cognitive and mental abilities.”

The lawmakers pointed to a similar request sent to the White House last June.

“The American people should have absolute confidence in their President,” the letter read in part.

“They deserve to know that he or she can perform the duties of Head of State and Commander in Chief. They deserve full transparency on the mental capabilities of their highest elected leader.”

The Republicans’ recent letter cited several instances of what they categorized as “mental decline,” including when Biden recently called Fox News reporter Peter Doocy a “stupid son of a b—h” and when he forgot the names of states on the campaign trail. 

“This is not just a recent trend, as your mental decline and forgetfulness have become more apparent over the past two years,” they wrote.

“This is not an unprecedented request. Starting in 2018, political opponents and members of the media clamored for your predecessor, then-President Trump, to take a cognitive test. In response, the White House Physician conducted a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) for President Trump, at which he excelled,” the letter reads. 

The GOP lawmakers also noted that the president’s mental health is “not a partisan issue,” pointing to previous comments from Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) that “it’s not hard to think that there will be future situations where the President’s physical and mental state may create issues for us.” 

“We agree with these statements. As such, we encourage you to follow the example set by President Trump, by undergoing a cognitive test as soon as possible and immediately making the results available for the American people,” they concluded. 

In an email to Fox News Digital, Jackson said the cognitive test will reassure Americans that Biden is fit for office or will help “in identifying and properly treating symptoms of impairment that are consistent with a variety of cognitive diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, Parkinson’s, or multiple sclerosis.” 

Jackson went on to claim, “We can only assume the worst if he doesn’t submit to the same standard that his own party demanded of the last Administration.” 

In November, the president underwent a physical examination and colonoscopy. At the time, his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said Biden is “fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency.” O’Connor did not specify whether the president underwent a cognitive exam. 

The Republican request comes at the start of Biden’s second year in office. His first year was marred by plummeting poll numbers, as many Americans appeared to lose confidence in his performance as president as the administration attempted to grapple with crisis after crisis. 

In November, a Politico/Morning Consult poll published Wednesday found that 50 percent of registered voters disagreed with the statement “Joe Biden is in good health,” while 40 percent agreed and 10 percent did not know or had no opinion.

The White House has repeatedly defended Biden and his health. He remains the oldest person to serve as president. 

During his first press conference of the year last month, Biden shrugged off concerns about his health and mental wellbeing, telling reporters he had “no idea” why Americans would have such concerns. 

The White House did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

When it comes to keeping Georgia’s election process honest, Garland Favorito is one of the toughest advocates and critics.

Favorito has been rattling the nerves of many Georgia political elites for 15 years while testing the mettle of the state’s election system.

The retired information technology professional is co-founder of VoterGA, a nonpartisan election integrity nonprofit with thousands of social media followers. Politically, he is independent.

Atlanta Civic Circle caught up with the Roswell resident who is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the authenticity of 147,000 absentee ballots cast in Fulton County during last year’s presidential election.

Here’s what Favorito had to say. This transcript has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Q. You are one of the people who filed a lawsuit to have the absentee ballots audited. Why?

A. Well, yeah. Inspected. It’s not a full audit. There was evidence of potential counterfeit ballots. We want to inspect those to see if the evidence and sworn affidavits… are in fact correct.

Q. Where did the evidence come from? Did someone tell you? Did they actually see it?

A. There are four sworn affidavits from senior Fulton County poll managers who claimed they handled counterfeit ballots in the audit that occurred on November 14 and 15.

Q. How many did they handle or actually see?

A. We couldn’t tell how many there were because the audit monitors weren’t allowed to get within six feet of a table so that they could detect the counterfeit ballot. What they described was that there were mail-in ballots that hadn’t been folded from being mailed. They were not marked with a writing instrument but they were marked by a machine and they have different paper stock. And they were marked the same way all of the down-ballot races (were marked).

Q. So what is that indicating to you?

A. That there are potentially counterfeit ballots. They’re not real.

Q. A Henry County judge who is hearing the case said this week he’s going to need more time to review the evidence. What’s your understanding of Monday’s hearing?

A. Yeah, there are a lot of complicated motions. He’s going to need time to sort all of those out.

Q. Do you expect his ruling to come this week?

A. I don’t think so. It’ll probably be a week or two.

Q. You’re one of nine people who filed the lawsuit in this case. What is the lawsuit alleging?

A. It’s alleging counterfeit ballots were in the count. Therefore, somebody injected them. We want to prevent that from happening.

Q.The lawsuit also alleges that it violated your constitutional rights. How so?

A. If somebody puts counterfeit ballots into the count, then it dilutes your vote. So it’s an equal protection violation and it’s also due process violation. It’s illegal.

Q. How does this impact our democracy?

A. Somebody injected counterfeit ballots into the count. It subverts democracy.

Q. Georgia is not the only state contesting ballots. There’s tension in Arizona right now over its ballot recount and there are various other cases throughout the country. What does this tell you on a broader, macro scale?

A. I’m glad there’s concern. People want to make sure that votes are counted correctly. So that’s good. But we don’t know until we see what the findings are. We don’t know now what it really is.

Q. How did your organization, VoterGA, get started?

A. We were created about 15 years ago to bring the lawsuit against the old electronic voting machines. We believe that they were unconstitutional because you couldn’t verify, audit or recount the results. They were very corrupt machines. They never should have been purchased in Georgia. They were purchased in 2002. They weren’t taken out of service until 2019.

Q. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your years as an elections integrity activist?

A. What I’ve learned is that the corruption is deeper than I had ever imagined.

Q. Tell me a little bit more about that. Are you saying that the corruption is bipartisan? Or is it one party over another? Or is it just built into the system?

A. That’s a great point. You have the Democrats in Fulton County and the Republicans in the Secretary of State’s office and you can’t trust either one of them. Yeah, it’s definitely bipartisan corruption at that.

Q. Your organization is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. So you’re not necessarily looking at any particular side or pushing one side over another. It sounds like your interest is getting at the truth or the integrity of the process.

A. We’ve been on both sides of the spectrum. Last time we were helping the progressives. This time, it appears that the former president got cheated. But we spent years trying to help the progressives because they thought they were cheated by the Republican establishment. Yeah, it’s really been on both sides. Election integrity really has to be nonpartisan.

Q. What has surprised you the most in your years as an election integrity activist?

A. The depth of corruption.

Q. Politicians and the media have repeatedly said there has been no real demonstrative evidence there was fraud in connection with last year’s election. Does that make you cringe when you hear that?

A.Yes, because I know they’re lying.

Q. Do you feel your 15 years as an election integrity activist has been worth it?

A.Yeah, I think so because it’s really come together in the last few years. It’s really kind of peaked in the last couple of years. I think the last couple of years have made the first 10 or 12 years worthwhile. For many years, we felt that people weren’t listening to us. We had the evidence and the facts but people weren’t listening. Now people are starting to listen, and they’re realizing that the news media hasn’t been telling us the truth. And the Secretary of State’s office hasn’t been telling us the truth. So people now are waking up and they’re understanding. They want election integrity, and they want election transparency like they’ve never wanted it before.

Pemex Says Baker Hughes Contracts Due to Growth, Not AMLO’s Son

The top executive at Mexico’s Petroleos Mexicanos says a growing volume of business with a U.S. oilfield-services provider at the heart of an alleged scandal involving the president’s son is simply due to rising production.

According to Pemex Chief Executive Officer Octavio Romero Oropeza, Baker Hughes Co. received 8.9 billion pesos (about $434 million) from the Mexican state-owned petroleum company for its oil services last year, up from 6.5 billion pesos the previous year.

“Baker Hughes is located in fifth place among the 25 companies that bill Pemex the most,” Romero said at a press briefing on Wednesday. “The amounts invoiced to these companies have generally increased in recent years. This is explained by the fact that in this administration, Petroleos Mexicanos has not stopped investing, even during the most complicated years.”

The comments follow President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s statements that the contracts had nothing to do with his son’s rental of a Houston-area property from a former Baker Hughes executive.

A recent article by non-profit civil association Mexicans Against Corruption and news outlet Latinus said that Jose Ramon Lopez Beltran, the president’s 40-year-old son, has lived in recent years in two homes in Texas, each worth nearly $1 million. The first property where he lived belonged to Keith Schilling, who worked for Baker Hughes between 2016 and 2019. Lopez Obrador, widely known as AMLO, has responded to the report by denying any conflict of interest.

Romero also said Pemex’s output was 1.76 million barrels a day in January, about 0.5% higher than its crude oil and condensate output in December.

A former Baker Hughes Co. executive cited in a scandal in Mexico for leasing out his Houston home to the eldest son of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he had no prior knowledge of who the renter was.

Keith Schilling, who worked for Baker Hughes between 2016 and 2019, spoke publicly for the first time on his involvement, commenting in an emailed statement to Bloomberg News. His home was vacant and available for rent after Schilling moved out to run the oil-service giant’s Canada business, he said.

US troops in Poland prepare for Americans potentially fleeing Ukraine

US troops in Poland are preparing to help American citizens who may flee to the country if Russia invades Ukraine, US officials said on Wednesday (Feb 9).

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the troops would not enter Ukraine to evacuate American citizens but would set up temporary facilities within Poland if needed. The Pentagon has said that around 1,700 service members, mainly from the 82nd Airborne Division, are deploying from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Poland.

Global commodity prices soar 50%, fastest pace in 27 years

Prices for crude oil, metals, grains and other internationally traded commodities are climbing at the fastest rate since 1995, raising fears of political instability in countries highly dependent on imports as seen in Turkey. Commodity markets are being squeezed from two directions. On one hand, demand is booming as economies recover from the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, sufficient supplies to meet this demand are being hampered by geopolitical factors. The Refinitiv CoreCommodity CRB Index, a composite measure of commodity prices, was up 46% on the year at the end of January. That was the largest one-year increase since 1995, when comparable data became available. A broad swathe of commodity prices are on the rise, especially crude oil and other fuels. Among 22 major commodities, nine rose more than 50%, including prices for familiar commodities, such as coffee, which climbed 91%, and cotton, up 58%. Aluminum rose 53%.

While demand for crude oil has soared, investment in supply has been held back by the move to decarbonize economies. Natural gas prices have been pushed up by growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, disruptions to supply chains and labor shortages have exacerbated pressure on the balance between supply and demand. The commodity squeeze has triggered a series of chain reactions in the market. Aluminum smelters, which use huge amounts of electricity, have been forced to cut back on output as production costs rise, creating shortages of the metal. Soaring natural gas prices have driven up the price of ammonia, a major component of fertilizer, which in turn is pushing up grain prices. High commodity prices are weighing on the global economic recovery. If energy prices stay at current levels, the International Monetary Fund estimates global economic growth will be shaved by 0.5 percentage point.

Resource-poor countries are especially challenged by the surge. The cost of Japan's raw material imports in the current fiscal year ending in March is estimated to increase by about 10 trillion yen ($86.7 billion), according to Mizuho Research & Technologies. The U.S. and other countries are rushing to tighten monetary policy in response to inflation, but "it is difficult to rein in inflation triggered by supply shocks with monetary policy," said Hiroshi Ugai, chief economist at JPMorgan Securities Japan. The impact of the commodity surge on political stability is becoming a growing concern. Turkey, which imports 70% of its energy, saw its consumer price index rise 49% on the year in January. Since the beginning of this month, the country has experienced a growing wave of worker demonstrations demanding higher pay and people protesting against soaring energy prices.

Of the world's 143 nations and self-governing regions, 47 relied on imports for more than half their energy needs in 2019, according to the International Energy Agency. Central Asia's Kazakhstan was roiled by violent demonstrations protesting higher liquefied petroleum gas prices at the beginning of this year. The commodity surge is also making food more expensive. In Thailand, pork prices climbed around 50% in the three months through January. The price of pork, the most consumed meat in the nation, was pushed up by higher prices for soybean and corn, both used as animal feed. Rising commodity prices have caused political instability before. The Arab Spring in 2011 is seen as being sparked by higher food prices. Resource-rich Indonesia has imposed export curbs, first on coal and then on palm oil, used in a wide variety of food and consumer products. This "resource nationalism," in which a country corrals its resources in favor of its domestic economy, is becoming another source of upward pressure on international prices.

On Tuesday night, Greg Geraldo and Dan Bongino joined Fox News’ Sean Hannity to discuss the Biden Administration’s recent announcement that it is opening facilities to provide drug users a ‘safe space’ to get high, while also providing the paraphernalia – shiny new crack pipes, clean needles, etc., etc. – to support their deadly habit.

The unbelievable decision is being billed as a potential solution to the fentanyl epidemic that’s sweeping the nation, which has killed over 100,000 Americans in the last year alone. In some places, such as San Francisco, fentanyl has killed more people over the past year than Covid, even when going by the heavily manipulated count that includes people who died with the virus, not just those who died from it.

Instead of sealing the southern border to effectively limit the flow of deadly drugs into the country, the public health ‘experts’ in Biden’s regime have decided that enabling individuals to wallow in their addiction – with clean needles and pipes – will help curb the issue.

You may be asking yourself: ‘who in their right mind would support such a ridiculous and destructive plan, and how would they even justify it?’

Well, look no further than Greg Geraldo, Fox News’ resident mustache. During the segment, in which Hannity introduced him with the preface “I’m expecting the worst about to come out of your mouth,” Geraldo defended Biden’s crackpipe plan by claiming it was necessary, because, you know, if you are against it, you are a heartless monster who doesn’t care about the lives of addicts – or as he repeatedly calls them, “junkies.”

Oh and by the way, it’s not like the government is handing out the drugs, the addicts bring their own, so it’s all good, Geraldo added.

“This is the question, do junkies lives matter? We lost 100,000 Americans in the last one year to overdose deaths. Fentanyl is everywhere. It’s in all of these drugs. They [the Biden administration] opened these two pilot locations with a safe secure – where the junkies can shoot up – they’ve saved 114 lives in 6 weeks. It’s not a pretty thing, it’s awful. I hate it, and yet, what’s the option? Watching them overdose? Watching them die in the street?

Hannity interjects, correctly pointing out that several other options have been laid out and are even in effect as law, including addiction treatment by trained drug counselors that can help these people overcome their addictions instead of enabling them to continue their downward spiral.

Geraldo continues:

“There are therapists on site, as i understand it, in the pilot locations. There are sanitary conditions. They [addicts] come in with their own drugs, [it’s] not that the government is giving them drugs. I dont like it, it’s ugly, but what i dont like worse is the 100,000 dead junkies.”

After Geraldo’s best defense of the policy, Hannity unleashes Bongino to demolish the ridiculous argument, and he did not disappoint. “Don’t worry Sean,” he quips. “Geraldo says they come in with their own drugs, so no worries, folks. As long as they’re coming in with their own drugs – that’s A-OK.”

“Geraldo, this is just juvenile,” Bongino continues. “You constantly engage in this first-order thinking stuff. You do this with immigration too, where you never ask the question: OK, and then what? So you say, ‘well it’s not compassionate if we stop people who are suffering at the border,’ and then you never say to yourself ‘what if we tell people who come in the country illegally that if you come in, we’re going to make the process [easier for you] – we’re going to facilitate it [well, what then?], he posits.

“This is the Geraldo model of thinking, and in this [crackpipe defense], you’re doing it again – you’re saying: ‘well, Sean, do you want five or six junkies to die? So we should make it easier for them to do drugs – never saying, ‘OK, well then what? What happens when we make it easier to do drugs? – Maybe [the inevitable result is] more people would do drugs, that’s what second-order thinking entails.”

China Evergrande shares firm after chairman vows full construction, no fire sales

Shares of China Evergrande Group (3333.HK)jumped on Thursday after the chairman of the world's most indebted property developer said it would resume construction, and ruled out fire sales.

Evergrande, with more than $300 billion in liabilities, including nearly $20 billion international bonds deemed to be in default, has been struggling to repay creditors, suppliers, and deliver homes.

Shares gained as much as 7.2% to HK$1.79, their highest since Jan. 25. That compared with a loss of 0.3% in the benchmark Hang Seng Index (.HSI) and a rise of 2.5% in Hang Seng Mainland Properties Index (.HSMPI).

China Evergrande needs to clear its debt by fully restoring construction and sales activities and not by selling assets on the cheap, its chairman, Hui Ka Yan, told an internal meeting, vowing to complete half of pre-sold homes this year.

Hui said the firm aimed to fully resume construction work across China this month, compared with 93.2% at the end of last year, with a goal of delivering 600,000 apartments in 2022.

Evergrande started having trouble repaying its suppliers and creditors in June as a bloated real estate sector suffered from deleveraging, triggering massive selloffs in its shares and bonds.

During the early days of the firm's debt crisis, its CEO, Xia Haijun, cashed out his bond holdings for a total of $128 million between July 27 to August 17 at prices of 35.88 cents to 52.38 cents, stock exchange filings on Wednesday showed.

The prices compared to Evergrande's bonds trading at around 15 cents on Thursday.

Finally, President Donald Trump chose to lob a verbal grenade in the general direction of his old VP Mike Pence last Sunday night — regarding Pence’s ability to formally contest the results of the stolen 2020 election. This was, for many Trump supporters, long overdue. Here is Trump’s statement on the matter:

The reason that Mike Pence did not exercise the power to lawfully contest the election is because Mike Pence was never a Trump loyalist. He’s a GOP establishment loyalist. There were plenty of problems inside the Trump Administration, and Vice President Mike Pence was at the center of many of those problems. In fact, it’s always been obvious that Pence and his staff were deeply involved in trying to remove President Trump from office.

Whenever the subject of Mike Pence comes up in casual conversation, I always ask the same question: “Do you know Olivia Troye? Do you know Jennifer Williams? Do you know Katherine Seaman and Josh Pitcock?”

If you’re drawing a blank with these names then I’m sorry to inform you that you were not paying close enough attention to politics during the Trump Years. Also, you were not paying attention to my Twitter feed — because I was reporting on these problems all the time during the Trump Administration.

So, without further ado, let’s review all the evidence against Mike Pence. Trust me: there’s a lot of evidence.

1) Who Fired General Michael Flynn?

Let’s begin with Mike Pence’s least favorite question: “Why did you insist that President Trump fire his National Security Advisor Michael Flynn in the opening days of the administration?” The official story is that Gen. Flynn had lied to Mike Pence about Flynn’s contacts with Russian diplomats. Nobody has bothered to ask Pence exactly how he was informed about Flynn’s private conversations. Think about it: somebody went to Pence with transcripts of Flynn’s calls, and told Pence that Flynn was a national security risk. Who would have access to such phone calls? Who would want to lie about the nature of those phone calls to get Flynn fired?

It almost certainly must have been disgraced FBI agent Peter Strozk.

It’s likely that Strzok was the one who pushed for VP Pence to fire Flynn because we know that Peter Strozk's assistant was Katherine Seaman — the wife of Mike Pence’s chief of staff Josh Pitcock. We also have the text exchanges between Strozk and Page discussing infiltrating the Trump White House in great detail. (This was the subject of an extraordinary letter from Senator Grassley and Senator Johnson to AG Bill Barr.) What did Pence know about the FBI’s attempts to spy on the Trump White House? Is it even possible that Mike Pence was totally unaware that his chief of staff’s spouse worked directly for the chief of the counter-espionage unit of the FBI?

We know that President Obama warned President Trump not to hire Flynn in 2016. We also know that Flynn himself believes that Obama advised Trump against hiring him because Flynn knew about the Obama administration’s role in spying on Trump’s presidential campaign. Removing Flynn as Trump’s National Security Advisor was a top priority for the Deep State.

In other words, Mike Pence was the first person to set the Russia Hoax into motion.

4) Pence’s Chief of Staff Gets Locked Out of White House by Trump

If you still harbor doubts about Pence’s treachery, let’s turn to Pence’s chief of staff Marc Short for confirmation of these activities. On January 6th, Short found himself locked out of the White House with his car still in the parking lot. When a reporter asked Short why this had happened, Short’s reply was surprisingly honest: “He’s blaming me for advice to VP.” The he in this case, of course, is Trump.

My  own sources in the White House told me that Pence’s chief of staff Marc Short was literally the first person to call for Trump to accept the results of the stolen election and concede to Biden. Like I said at the beginning: there’s a lot of evidence of Pence’s treachery.

Long before GOP voters were suddenly surprised by Pence’s “lack of courage” on January 6th, I warned my followers on social media that any trust in Pence was misplaced. My sources in the White House told me that Pence simply disappeared after the 2020 election. (He went skiing in Vail rather than bother with contesting the 2020 election.) I wrote on Twitter at the time:

Why did Pence and his staff spend four years hobbling the Trump Administration? Why can’t people believe that the GOP would try to impeach Trump to clear the way for Pence? Most Republican voters have never met the big GOP donors — and have no idea what they do with their money. The big donors wanted a Mike Pence/Nikki Haley ticket in 2024. They don't really care what GOP voters want, and they never have. These are the people who pushed Jeb in 2016. And Paul Ryan before that. And Dan Quayle before that.

Pence is a creature of the GOP donors, not an America First patriot. That much is obvious now. Pence was added to the Trump ticket to restrain Trump's populism — and that’s what he tried to do for four years. When pro-Trump aides were sidelined in the Trump White House, I heard the same thing from all of them: they were told to sit down and shut up and, if they were quiet, they might get to work for Pence and Haley in 2024.

It’s time for Republican voters to admit that they had no idea who Mike Pence was. Don’t be too upset with yourself. He fooled plenty of people. The man you thought he was — that guy doesn’t really exist. It’s time you paid much closer attention to your favorite politicians though— if you want your country to survive.

U.S. consumer prices rose solidly in January, leading to the biggest annual increase in inflation in 40 years, fueling financial markets speculation for a 50 basis points interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve next month.

The broad increase in prices reported by the Labor Department on Thursday was led by soaring costs for rents, electricity and food, and could heap more political pressure on President Joe Biden, whose popularity has been declining amid anxiety over the rising cost of living.

High inflation has overshadowed a strong economy, which grew at its fastest pace in 37 years in 2021 and a labor market that is rapidly churning out jobs.

Electricity prices jumped 4.2%, offsetting a 0.8% decline in the cost of gasoline and a 0.5% drop in natural gas.

In the 12 months through January, the CPI jumped 7.5%, the biggest year-on-year increase since February 1982. That followed a 7.0% advance in December and marked the fourth straight month of annual increases in excess of 6%. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the CPI rising 0.5% on month and accelerating 7.3% on a year-on-year basis.

Effective with the January report, the CPI was re-weighted based on consumer expenditure data from 2019-2020.

The Fed is expected to start raising rates in March to rein in inflation, which has overshot the U.S. central bank's 2% target. Financial markets are predicting nearly even odds of a 50 basis points increase, according to CME's FedWatch tool.

The Fed’s Cold War Bunker

The Culpeper Switch is a sprawling bunker built by the Federal Reserve to keep the banks running after nuclear apocalypse. But even some Cold War-era politicians thought it was silly.

The compound was built just outside the small town of Culpeper, Virginia, near Mount Pony, in 1969. The 135,000 square foot facility was officially called the Federal Reserve System’s Communications and Records Center, and it housed about $4 billion of American currency during the 1970s — currency sitting in what was reportedly the world’s largest single-floor vault at the time. The underground compound was supposed to serve as the country’s Federal Reserve headquarters in case of a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. If things were looking particularly dicey with the Reds, a select group of Federal Reserve employees and their families were instructed to hightail it over to the Culpeper Switch.

Aside from holding an insane amount of cash, the Culpeper Switch was also the nerve center for a state-of-the art national computer network. This network, sometimes called the FedWire, would let the country’s banks talk to each other and exchange money just as they had before all-out nuclear war had reared its radioactive head.
