Pakistan's exports to Central Asian countries witness increase of $41m

Pakistan's exports to Central Asian countries witnessed an increase of 41 million dollars during last fiscal year as compared to the preceding year.

In a series of tweets, Adviser on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood said Pakistan's exports to Central Asian countries increased to 145 million dollars during last fiscal year from 104 million dollars in 2019-20.

He said for six months, from July to December last year, these exports were increased by 173 percent to 134 million dollars from 49 million dollars during same period last year.

Abdul Razak Dawood said the Ministry of Commerce’s ‘Silk Route Reconnect’ initiative is now bearing results.

The Advisor on Commerce said Pakistan is also negotiating Preferential Trade Agreements and transit trade agreements with Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

Treasury Yields Jump Toward 2-Year High, Shattering Market Calm

Treasuries wiped out gains posted earlier in the week to resume their decline Friday, amid a renewed focus on the Federal Reserve’s resolve to pare pandemic stimulus as inflation surges at the fastest pace in four decades.

The benchmark 10-year yield climbed 6 basis points to about 1.77%, on track for the highest closing level since January 2020, erasing drops seen earlier in the week. The 2-year note jumped 7 basis points to 0.97%, the highest since February 2020.

The bearish turn came despite weaker-than-expected retail sales figures that briefly supported the market earlier in the day. It also caps what had been a relatively calm week for investors, with prices steadying from the steep selloff that raced through the world’s biggest bond market last week.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon told analysts Friday that he expects the Fed to raise rates more than the market is currently pricing in, saying it may not be as “sweet and gentle” as some might expect. “The late-week grind higher in yields ahead of the long weekend similarly speaks to investors’ collective unwillingness to embrace the consolidation beyond simply a respite in the selling pressure as over-stretched momentum is worked off,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO Capital Markets. “The Treasury market is continuing to trade inflation as justification to push yields up.”

The moves reflect broad market conviction that the Fed will start raising rates in March and begin shrinking its $8.8 trillion balance sheet in the second half of the year. The latter shift which would result from the monetary authority declining to roll over maturing securities has cast considerable uncertainty over the Treasury market and would mark a swifter pullback than the Fed’s approach during the last tightening cycle.

At the same time, there are questions about whether a series of relatively shallow rate hikes would tamp down the steepest inflation in four decades -- or if the Fed could find itself behind the curve, fighting a type of wage-price spiral like the one that gripped the nation in the early 1980s. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said this week the central bank is prepared to crank up the pace of tightening if needed and some officials have been pushing for the bank to shrink its bond holdings at a faster pace.

The Fed’s trajectory is seen justifying a climb in 10-year yields above 2%, an area previously frequented in mid-2019.

Citigroup’s Quarterly Profit Falls 26%

Investment banking fees rose, but trading revenue fell. For the full year, Citi’s profit nearly doubled to $22 billion and revenue fell 5% to $71.9 billion.

Under Chief Executive Jane Fraser, Citigroup is spun off several international consumer operations in an effort to simplify its business and boost profitability. Citigroup is withdrawing from consumer operations in 14 countries, including Mexico, one of its largest overseas markets.

The work, specifically a plan to shut down operations in South Korea, drove spending up 18% to $13.5 billion in the quarter. It pulled profits down at the same time as revenue from its market trading operations fell. Wild markets have driven trading revenue and banks’ profits during the pandemic.

Revenue in the Institutional Client group increased 4% to $9.9 billion. Trading revenue fell 17% in the quarter. Investment banking fees from companies advising on mergers, and underwriting stock and debt sales increased 43%.

On the consumer side, revenue fell 6% to $6.9 billion and profit fell 42%, hurt by lower interest rates and restructuring expenses.

Spending on Citigroup credit cards up 20%. But customers continued to pay fees and card debt fell 1%. Customers, with no cash in the pandemic, were paying off their cards every month and had limited borrowing, but officials have said they believe credit will increase in 2022.

Citigroup’s lending profitability slipped again, with its net interest margin down 1.98% from 1.99% last quarter.

If the Federal Reserve raises interest rates as predicted, banks should be able to increase loan profits by charging more for loans even if deposit rates are kept near zero.

The bank released another $1.4 billion from reserves made up for potential loan losses, boosting the bottom line in the quarter. In total for the year, the bank issued nearly $5 billion, after setting aside $17.5 billion in 2020, a swing that powered large gains for the year.

U.S. accuses Russia of planning 'false-flag operation' in eastern Ukraine

The US has accused Russia of planning covert operations, including sabotage, in eastern Ukraine in an effort to create a "pretext for invasion", after diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis faltered and government websites were hit by a major cyber attack.

A US official said on Friday: "We have information that indicates Russia has already pre-positioned a group of operatives to conduct a false-flag operation in eastern Ukraine. The operatives are trained in urban warfare and in using explosives to carry out acts of sabotage against Russia's own proxy-forces."

False flag operations are designed to hide the true source of a provocative act. The official said such "sabotage activities" and "information operations" would serve to accuse "Ukraine of preparing an imminent attack against Russian forces in eastern Ukraine", adding that this could be a precursor to a military invasion starting "between mid-January and mid-February". Ukraine's army defence intelligence service also warned that "Russian special services are preparing provocations against servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces to accuse Ukraine of this" and, in turn, justify further military aggression against its neighbour.

Earlier on Friday Ukraine said it was the target of a "massive cyber attack" after about 70 government websites ceased functioning. Targets included websites of the ministerial cabinet, a number of ministries, the state treasury and the Diia electronic public services platform, where vaccination certificates and electronic passports are stored. "Ukrainians! All your personal data has been uploaded to the public network," read a message posted on the foreign ministry's website. "All data on your computer is being erased and won't be recoverable. All information about you has become public, fear and expect the worst."

Ukraine's Centre for Strategic Communications, a government agency set up to counter Russia's aggression, accused Moscow of being behind Friday's cyber attacks while noting that official investigators have yet to formally draw such a conclusion. "This is not the first or even the second time that Ukrainian internet resources have been attacked since the beginning of Russia's military aggression ... we assume that the current one is connected with the recent defeat of Russia in the negotiations on the future co-operation of Ukraine with Nato," the agency said.

The attack follows tense negotiations this week between the US, Nato and western allies and Russia, aimed at deterring Russian president Vladimir Putin from deciding on a deeper invasion of Ukraine. Moscow annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

Ukrainian officials recently warned that cyber attacks and other efforts to destabilise the country would be a prelude to further aggression. The message left by hackers, posted in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish, added: "This is for your past, present and future. For Volyn, for the OUN UPA [Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists/Ukrainian Insurgent Army], for Halychyna, for Polissya and for historical lands."

Comments at the end of the message referred to Ukrainian insurgent fighters during the second world war and appeared to chastise Ukraine for ethnic clashes and atrocities. Poland and Ukraine accuse each other of committing atrocities during the period in the region, which the countries have jostled over for centuries. The hackers' post also included defaced images of Ukraine's national symbols.

It was not immediately clear if the hackers were Polish or if this was an attempt to incite divisions between Ukraine and Poland, one of Kyiv's strongest European allies.

Oregon OHSA has dropped its plan for implementing a vaccine-or-test requirement for businesses with more than 100 employees. The plan was expected to have required unvaccinated employees to wear a mask and be subject to weekly testing.

The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board commented on the Supreme Court decision that has now impacted many of the states’ local decisions;“The Court’s major questions doctrine requires Congress to give clear statutory direction for economically and politically significant actions. Congress never passed a law authorizing the mandate, though in their dissent the three liberal Justices purported to find one in the emanations and penumbras of the OSHA law. A Senate majority voted last month to disapprove it. OSHA also violated administrative law by not tailoring the mandate to workplace risk. While OSHA provided narrow exemptions for employees who work remotely or outdoors 100% of the time, the Court notes these “exemptions are largely illusory.” Only 9% of landscapers qualify as working exclusively outside. The rule “otherwise operates as a blunt instrument,” the Court writes…The disappointment was the Court’s 5-4 decision upholding the mandate on 10 million health-care workers. The Chief and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the liberals in ruling that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services did have proper legislative authority.CMS found broad latitude to regulate healthcare providers when “necessary in the interest of the health and safety of individuals who are furnished services.” But that judgment was taken to task in a sharp dissent by Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Justice Gorsuch and Justices Samuel Alito and Amy Coney Barrett.”

China Home Market Slump Deepens as Prices Fall for Fourth Month

China’s home prices fell for a fourth consecutive month in December, as the credit crunch in the property sector showed little sign of easing.

New home prices in 70 cities, excluding state-subsidized housing, slid 0.28% last month from November, when they dropped 0.33%, National Bureau of Statistics figures showed Saturday.

A liquidity crisis at industry giant China Evergrande Group is spreading to competitors including Shimao Group Holdings Ltd. and Guangzhou R&F Properties Co. Falling prices may dissuade homebuyers concerned about the value of their assets, making it harder for developers to sell properties and generate much needed cash.

Recent moves by authorities to ease some of the restrictions on real estate funding have done little to boost the market. Home loan demand stayed weak in December, with households’ mid- and long-term loans, a proxy for mortgages, increasing the least since February 2020. Year-end sales campaigns by developers added to downward pressure on prices.

The Federal Reserve is in line to get three new governors, a new vice chairman, a new banking chief and likely a couple new regional presidents. President Joe Biden is expected to nominate Sarah Bloom Raskin, Lisa Cook and Philip Jefferson to the governors’ positions. Raskin is expected to be the biggest change agent as she will take on the Fed’s supervisor of the banking industry.

In what likely will be just a few months’ time, the Federal Reserve will look a lot different: Three new governors, a new vice chairman, a new banking chief and likely a couple new regional presidents.

But while the parts of the institution’s upper echelon may change quite a bit, the whole could look pretty much the same.

That’s because Fed-watchers think ideologically there probably will be little change, even if Sarah Bloom Raskin, Lisa Cook and Philip Jefferson are confirmed as new members on the Board of Governors. White House sources say President Joe Biden will nominate the trio in the coming days.

Of the three, Raskin is thought to be the biggest change agent. She is expected to take a heavier hand in her prospective role as the vice chair for bank supervision, a position until December that had been held by Randal Quarles, who took a lighter touch.

But while Raskin could ramp up the rhetoric on the financial system, there are questions over how much that actually will translate into policy-wise.

“She’s a former regulator. She knows this stuff. This is not something she’s going to screw up,” said Christopher Whalen, founder of Whalen Global Advisors and a a former Fed researcher. “The bankers will be surprised that the rhetoric is going to be maybe a little bit more extreme. But the substance? What are they going to do to these guys? It’s not like they take a lot of risks.”

Indeed, the level of high-quality capital U.S. banks are holding compared to risk assets has progressed continually higher since the financial crisis of 2008, from 11.4% at the end of 2009 to 15.7% as of the third quarter in 2011, according to Fed data.

Turkey inflation back to single digits by mid-2023: finance minister

Turkey's annual inflation rate will be in single digits by the time presidential and parliamentary elections set for mid-2023 are held, Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati said on Saturday.

Inflation hit a 19-year high of 36% in December after the central bank slashed interest rates under pressure from President Tayyip Erdogan, causing a currency crisis that led to the lira shedding 44% of its value in 2021. Speaking to heads of nongovernmental organizations in Istanbul, Nebati said Turkey's only problem now was high inflation, and the volatility in the lira's exchange rate had settled.

"With fiscal policies and the steps that we will take, we will enter the elections... next year with single-digit inflation," Nebati said. "We will all experience, see the change after the first quarter (of 2022)," he said about inflation. Despite government officials' promises of bringing inflation down quickly, economic analysts say it could exceed 50% in coming months and remain elevated through the year.

The currency crisis was halted last month, thanks in part to costly currency interventions and to government incentives to reduce the dollar's appeal to savers. Turks snatched up hard currencies as the lira sank to record lows against the dollar, and Turkish locals' forex and gold holdings hit a record high of $238.97 billion in December before they declined slightly to $234.3 billion by Jan. 7.

Nebati said on Saturday the conversion of forex holdings to Turkish lira will accelerate in coming weeks.*

Hello QRB, UK bread visiting with a fun half-dig. Am not sure whether I shared this dig with you or not. We’ve dug up and down and sideways upside down and have some odds and ends leftovers hanging about. Here’s another of those half-spun digs but it’s fun to share.

I always thot that anon’s speculation in Q post 2800 that the value targets might have arrived at the Embankment by boat was wild speculation, thinking “Oh, come on,” but there remains the fact Q linked to that anon and a couple of others.

With that in mind, I’s like to share this vidcap from a Ytube vid was an accidental find by UK anons for a building lights match with the LISAMI6 building called the MILLBANK BLDG. it was the first such match found by the UK anons.

It presented a conundrum, being found in a vid by a photographer whose Ytube vid was stated to contain photos from a photography event called ‘Photo 24 London’ which according to the photog took place in June 2014. However, UK anons determined the hoarding on that particular tower could not have occurred in June 2014, and by that evidence, could only have occurred between NOV ‘13 and MAR ‘14. By April 2014 the hoarding on the tower of Westminster would be gone. So we figured that the photog had by mistake included that pic in the video by mistake. It would only be later that an anon would find the sunset Getty images from Christmas Day 2013 which would be a match for the building lights seen in LISAMI6. But those Getty images would also be a compelling match for this private photo. We dubbed it 24LONDON.

The photo, if taken during the time window of LISAMI6, would show an ‘over the side’ image of TATTERSHALL CASTLE which could have been taken the same night as LISAMI6.

The pic appears to show a vessel alongside TATTS and another dark vessel that has hauled up to the riverside. It is a timelapse photo which appears to show the boat wakes of the two vessels. Noteworthy, is that the boat wakes come from down river toward the sea. We estimate, by looking at the rotation seen on LONDON EYE, that the film exposure was 5 minutes. Here’s why: One revolution of LONDON EYE takes 30 minutes. Look at how far LONDON EYE has moved. It appears LE has moved 1/6th of its circumference.

Is the boat dock relevant? Did the people in the photo arrive via boat? I'd assume that's preferable as most points of entry will have lots of security and cameras.

I just checked googlemaps (i konw nothing of UK geography) and it looks like yes: you could take a boat from France (or really anywhere on the atlantic) and then mosey on over to the Corinthian. I wonder if the traffic cam is new and nobody knew about it?

Also in the photo of "LP" (hard to see, we assert, not known) it looks like they're walking away from the boat dock. Not conclusive that they came from there, but does hint towards that.

The U.S. and Japan are discussing stockpiling munitions in each other's defense facilities across Japan, including islands in Taiwan's vicinity, to prepare for contingencies, Nikkei has learned.

The issue of joint usage of facilities was discussed in last week's two-plus-two meeting of foreign and defense ministers. The ministers "committed to increase joint/shared use of U.S. and Japanese facilities, including efforts to strengthen Japan Self-Defense Forces' posture in areas including its southwestern islands," the sides said in a statement after the meeting.

Joint use of facilities includes the stockpiling of munitions and shared use of runways, according to a source familiar with the talks. "There was progress on this issue so it was written into the joint statement," the person said. The southwestern islands, or Nansei Islands in Japanese, are a chain that stretches from the southernmost tip of Kyushu to the north of Taiwan. If realized, the allies would have stockpiles of munitions that can quickly be deployed and replenished in Taiwan's immediate neighborhood. The westernmost of the Nansei Islands, Yonaguni, lies 108 km from the east coast of Taiwan.

The U.S. military has relied heavily on precision-guided munitions in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as battling groups like the Islamic State. Combined with budget cuts, this has led to a shortage of munitions in the army, navy and air force.

Precision-guided munitions are also expected to play a pivotal role in any potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait. With an accuracy reportedly less than 3 meters, precision-guided munitions are seen as vital to breaking China's anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) strategy, which seeks to keep American and allied forces out of the East and South China seas.

Credit Suisse Chairman to Leave Bank Amid Board Probe

Antonio Horta-Osorio to depart on investigation of his personal use of corporate planes and travel that violated COVID-19 quarantine rules. Credit Suisse said board member Axl Lehmann was appointed to take the role of chairman, effective immediately. Mr. Lehmann, a former UBS Group AG executive, joined the Credit Suisse board in late 2021 and is the chairman of its risk committee-. A Credit Suisse spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. Mr. Horta-Osorio could not be reached late on Sunday and his lawyer did not respond.

“I am sorry that many of my personal actions have caused difficulties for the Bank and have compromised my ability to represent the Bank internally and externally,” Mr. Horta-Osorio said in a Credit Suisse news release. “Therefore I believe that my resignation is in the interest of the Bank and its stakeholders at this critical time.”

The departure of Mr. Horta-Osorio could spell trouble for Credit Suisse. He was appointed to help solve the problems of the Swiss bank. Credit Suisse is still pulling out of the turmoil as it lost $5.5 billion from the explosion of hedge fund Archegos Capital Management and now entangles itself with bankrupt finance firm Greensil Capital.

Mr Horta-Osorio has been caught in his own troubles in recent weeks, breaking quarantine rules by flying from London to Zurich on 28 November. The visit comes a day after Switzerland imposed a 10-day quarantine on arrivals from the UK and many other countries due to the omicron surge. He said at the time that the breach was unintentional and was reported to health officials and the Swiss financial regulator FINMA. He apologized and said that this would not happen again.

Following the quarantine breach, Credit Suisse said compliance with laws and guidelines was a priority for the bank and the chairman. A FINMA spokesman said at the time it was in contact with Credit Suisse on the matter.

Reuters Reported in December That the bank was investigating Mr. Horta-Osorio’s travels and that he attended the Wimbledon tennis finals in the UK in July, when the country’s COVID-19 rules required him to be in quarantine. The Swiss press separately reported that the president used corporate planes in the fall to travel for a holiday in the Maldives. At the time, Credit Suisse said it had rules for the use of private jets for the president and other executives.

The Portugal native developed a reputation as one of Europe’s most highly respected bankers after turning to Lloyds Banking Group plc, where he was CEO for a decade. At Credit Suisse, he said he would re-evaluate the bank’s risk appetite; Review its culture, pay and incentives; and focus on personal responsibility and accountability of employees. “We need to foster a culture that reinforces the importance of risk management,” Mr. Horta-Osorio said of Credit Suisse shortly after becoming chairman in April 2021.

Credit Suisse will officially propose Mr. Lehman as chairman at its shareholder meeting on April 29. “We have set the right course with the new strategy and will continue to embed a strong risk culture in the firm,” Mr Lehmann said in the news release.

I think this anon does not mean this literally, but I want to briefly take it literally as a thought experiment.

Like many anons, I find it useful to contemplate seeming crazy ideas (and we see many of them).

I think there is a refutation of the flat earth theory that is difficult to counter.

Suppose that the Earth is really a disk, and the "South Pole" is not a point, but rather an ice wall on the circumference.

(That is what the flat Earth proponents/shills seem to say.)

Then flight times in the Southern hemisphere would be far longer than they are.

Not many people travel to inner Anatarctica, so maybe the elites could keep secret what is there.

And maybe NASA produces fake photos of the Earth, and only a few know, and so on.

But many, many people take flights in the Southern hemisphere (Novak Djokovic, for instance).

Are they are all "in on" the conspiracy?

That doesn't seem very likely, and I don't think the flat earthers address this.

So I don't place much stock in that theory, but I do think it is useful to think about things like that.

Here is my question about Comey though: is there any similar "easy" proof that he is not a white hat?

For instance, if he killed an innocent person, then he is not a white hat.

I think I have provided a good deal of positive evidence that he is a white hat, and I have a way to explain, in principle, most of the counter-evidence.

In short, his participation in Russiagate was for the purpose of directing the black hats into a debacle (and gathering evidence on them).

(And of course the biggest chunk of positive evidence accrues around the fact that he screwed Hillary in 2016.)

But I would totally agree that there could exist knockdown evidence against my interpretation.

It is just that I haven't seen it or thought of it.

EXCLUSIVE: States Investigating Surge in Mortality Rate Among 18–49-Year-Olds, Majority Unrelated to COVID-19

Health departments in several states confirmed to The Epoch Times that they are looking into a steep surge in the mortality rate for people aged 18 to 49 in 2021—a majority of which are not linked to COVID-19.

Deaths among people aged 18 to 49 increased more than 40 percent in the 12 months ending October 2021 compared to the same period in 2018–2019, before the pandemic, according to an analysis by The Epoch Times of death certificate data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The agency doesn’t yet have full 2021 figures, as death certificate data has a lag of up to eight weeks or more.

The surge differed greatly from state to state, with the most dramatic increase in young-to-middle age deaths in the South, Midwest, and the West Coast, while the northeastern states generally saw much milder spikes. Public health authorities in several states with some of the largest increases are examining the issue.

Texas saw the 18 to 49 age mortality jump 61 percent, the second-highest increase in the country. Of that, less than 58 percent was attributed to COVID-19.

“Our Center of Health Statistics is looking at the data,” said Chris Van Deusen, the head of Media Relations at the Texas Department of State Health Services, via email. “We’ll get back with you.”

Florida, which saw an increase of 51 percent, 48 percent of that attributed to COVID-19, is also probing the matter.

“I am looking into it to see if there is some sort of correlation/causation,” said Jeremy Redfern, spokesman for the Florida Department of Health via email.

Nevada saw the highest increase, 65 percent, of which just 36 percent was attributed to COVID-19.

Shannon Litz, a public information officer at the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, said via email she passed on questions regarding the mortality spike to the agency’s Office of Analytics “for review.”

The District of Columbia experienced an increase of 72 percent, none of it attributed to COVID-19.

Robert Mayfield, spokesman for D.C.’s health authority, referred The Epoch Times to the district’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), which suggested it lacked the expertise to analyze the phenomenon.

“OCME does not currently have an epidemiologist (the position is being advertised) so it has no present ability to analyze the data,” said the office’s spokesman Rodney Adams via email.

Arizona recorded a 57 percent increase, 37 percent of which was attributed to COVID-19.

Arizona’s Department of Health Services couldn’t respond to questions regarding the issue because its data is “not yet finalized,” said Tom Herrmann, the agency’s public information officer, via email.

Other states with some of the highest increases were Tennessee (57 percent up, 33 percent attributed to COVID-19), California (55 percent up, 42 percent attributed to COVID-19), New Mexico (52 percent up, 33 percent attributed to COVID-19), and Louisiana (51 percent up, 32 percent attributed to COVID-19). None of their health authorities responded to requests for comment.

The mortality surge seemed to be significantly milder in the northeast. New Hampshire saw no increase, Massachusetts had only a 13 percent spike (24 percent of it attributed to COVID-19), and New York, one of the worst-hit by the pandemic in the region, was up 29 percent (30 percent of it attributed to COVID-19).

CDC data on the causes of those excess deaths aren’t yet available for 2021, aside from those involving COVID-19, pneumonia, and influenza. There were close to 6,000 excess pneumonia deaths that didn’t involve COVID-19 in the 18 to 49 age group in the 12 months ending October 2021. Influenza was only involved in 50 deaths in this age group, down from 550 in the same period pre-pandemic. The flu death count didn’t exclude those that also involved COVID-19 or pneumonia, the CDC noted.

A part of the surge could be likely blamed on drug overdoses, which increased to more than 101,000 in the 12 months ending June 2021 from about 72,000 in 2019, the CDC estimated. About two-thirds of those deaths involved synthetic opioids such as fentanyl that are often smuggled to the United States from China via Mexico.

For those aged 50 to 84, mortality increased more than 27 percent, representing more than 470,000 excess deaths. Some 77 percent of the deaths had COVID-19 marked on the death certificate as the cause or a contributing factor.

For those 85 or older, mortality increased about 12 percent with more than 100,000 excess deaths. There were more than 130,000 COVID-related deaths in this group, indicating these seniors were less likely to die of a non-COVID-related cause from November 2020 to October 2021 than during the same period of 2018–2019.

Comparing 2020 to 2019, mortality increased some 24 percent for those aged 18 to 49, with less than a third of those excess deaths involving COVID-19. For those aged 50 to 84, mortality increased less than 20 percent, with over 70 percent of that involving COVID-19. For those even older, mortality jumped about 16 percent, with nearly 90 percent of it involving COVID-19.

For those under 18, mortality decreased about 0.4 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. In the 12 months ending October 2021, it fell some 3.3 percent compared to the same period in 2018–2019.

​Dick Morris, a onetime top adviser to former President Bill Clinton, says there’s a “good chance” of a 2024 rematch between Hillary Clinton and ex-President Donald Trump.

Morris said Sunday that if Democrats lose control of Congress in the 2022 midterm elections, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will be toast — paving the way for a second Hillary bid, with husband Bill playing an architect to her strategy.

“There’s a good chance of it,” said Morris, referring to a Hillary-Trump rematch, to John Catsimatidis on the radio host’s WABC show.

“Hillary has set up a brilliant strategy that nobody else is able to do,” Morris added. “Knowing the people around her, I believe there is only one person capable of that level of thinking — and that’s her husband, Bill.

“The second the election is over … every Democrat is going to take a shot at Biden and Harris. They will be DOA,” Morris said.

Meanwhile, at a time when no Democrats are publicly criticizing Biden, Clinton has been warning her party about aligning itself with the policies of progressive Democrats.

​”She has set up a zero-sum game where the worse [Biden] does, the better she does, because she’s positioned herself as the Democratic alternative to Biden. Not just to Biden, but to the extreme left in the Democratic Party,” Morris said.

“She staked out a ground, not on ideological issues, but on pragmatism.”

Clinton in the MSNBC interview also took a shot at the Biden administration’s struggle to pass legislation in a Democratic-controlled Congress.

While she said she was “all about vigorous debate … at the end of the day, it means nothing if we don’t have a Congress that will get things done and we don’t have a White House that we can count on to be sane and sober and stable and productive.”

An op-ed last week in the Wall Street Journal made the case for a 2024 Clinton run, saying the poor poll numbers for Biden and Harris, as well as Harris’ own unpopularity, could open the door for the former first lady.

“She is already in an advantageous position to become the 2024 Democratic nominee,” wrote Democratic political consultant Doug Schoen and former Manhattan Borough President Andrew Stein about the 74-year-old Clinton.

"She is an experienced national figure who is younger than Mr. Biden and can offer a different approach from the disorganized and unpopular one the party is currently taking.”

And last week, Politico reported that Hillary and her husband see an opening to return to prominence in the Democratic Party in the squabbling between moderates and progressives over Biden’s legislative agenda that has doomed the Build Back Better social-spending plan and election reforms.

“It’s a perpetual itch that will never go away,” one insider told the site of the Clintons’ desire to have Hillary return to political office. “They know how to slowly re-enter. The Clintons want to reset the board in their favor and then move the pieces.”

Trump hasn’t said he intends to run again in 2024, but he routinely bests other potential Republican candidates in polls.

In a recent Reuters/Ipsos survey, 54 percent of Republicans picked Trump as their top choice, far above the 11 percent who chose Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Prince Andrew may have once dated Ghislaine Maxwell, according to friends and a former royal protection officer who claims Jeffrey Epstein’s madam was constantly “in and out” of Buckingham Palace.

Former palace cop Paul Page said in a new documentary that Maxwell became a regular visitor from 2001, the year Andrew and his sex accuser, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, were photographed in Maxwell’s London home.

"From the way she was allowed to enter and exit the palace at will, we realized — suspected — that she may have had an intimate relationship with Prince Andrew,” Page said.

“A colleague of mine remembered her coming in four times in one day. She kept coming in and out, in and out,” he told the doc, “Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Pedophile,” set to air on Britain’s ITV in full on Tuesday.

A banker friend of Maxwell’s who socialized with the now-disgraced group shared the sentiment.

“I got the sense that Prince Andrew and Ghislaine had probably been girlfriend and boyfriend in the past,” Euan Rellie told the documentary, according to the Telegraph.

“They had an easy warmth around each other,” he said.

Rellie, who became friends with media heiress Maxwell at Cambridge University, recalled being invited to a dinner party in Epstein’s New York townhouse by Maxwell, who said it was “for my friend Prince Andrew.”

“She described Andrew as being her friend, not Jeffrey’s,” Rellie recalled.

The documentary also shows ITV’s Ranvir Singh calling a cellphone number found among a number of contacts for Andrew in Epstein and Maxwell’s now-notorious little black book.

“Hello … I think this might be Prince Andrew,” the reporter said after hearing a voicemail message she said sounded just like the middle son of Queen Elizabeth II.

“We found your number in the little black book and we’d like to have a chat with you,” she said, assuming it was the royal.

She looked shocked as she turned to her crew and said, “I mean, that sounded like Prince Andrew’s voice.”

Royal protection officer Page, meanwhile, also claimed that Andrew was known for having “50 or 60 stuffed toys” on his bed at the palace.

“If those bears weren’t put back in the right order by the maids, he would shout and scream and become very abusive,” claimed the ex-cop who worked in the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command for six years.

Andrew declined to comment, ITV said.

He is being sued by Giuffre, who has long claimed that Epstein and Maxwell made her have sex with him three times, starting when she was just 17.

Andrew has vehemently denied the allegations, which last week led to him being stripped of the title “His Royal Highness,” meaning he will fight the lawsuit as a private citizen.

Maxwell is still behind bars awaiting sentencing for sex-trafficking underage girls for late pedophile Epstein, whom she had also long dated. She is pushing for a mistrial amid revelations that jurors failed to disclose their own childhood abuse that they then used to sway deliberations.

Nomura, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs Received a Cumulative $8 Trillion from the Fed’s Emergency Repo Loans in Fourth Quarter of 2019

The Dodd-Frank financial reform legislation of 2010 ordered the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an investigative body for Congress, to audit the Fed’s alphabet soup of emergency lending programs conducted during and after the 2008 financial crisis. The GAO found that a cumulative $16.1 trillion had been pumped out to Wall Street firms by the Fed – at super cheap interest rates. The GAO provided data for the peak amounts outstanding and also a cumulative total.

Why is a cumulative total essential and relevant? Because one institution in 2008, Citigroup, was insolvent for much of the time the Fed was flooding it with cheap loans. (Under law, the Fed is not allowed to make loans to an insolvent institution.) And when an insolvent institution is getting loans rolled over and over by the Fed for a span of two and a half years, at interest rates frequently below one percent when the market wouldn’t loan it money at even double-digit interest rates, it’s highly relevant to know the cumulative tally of just how much Citigroup got from the Fed. According to the GAO, that tally came to $2.5 trillion for just some of these Fed loan programs.

The academic scholars that compiled the Fed’s loans during the financial crisis for the Levy Economics Institute also provided cumulative tallies. Their tally, which included additional Fed bailout programs not included by the GAO, came to $29 trillion.

The largest of the Fed’s emergency loan programs to Wall Street trading houses in 2008 was called the Primary Dealer Credit Facility, or in alphabet-soup-speak, PDCF. It made a cumulative tally of $8.9 trillion over a span of more than two years. Just three Wall Street trading firms received 64 percent of that money: Citigroup, a cumulative $2.02 trillion; Morgan Stanley, a cumulative $1.9 trillion; and Merrill Lynch, a cumulative $1.78 trillion.

Back in 2008 there was no law that forced the Fed to ever reveal the names of the banks that borrowed this money from the Fed and the amounts borrowed. The Dodd-Frank legislation made these disclosures by the Fed the law of the land. But Dodd-Frank set up a two-tier level of disclosures. If the emergency lending program was under Section 13(3) of the Federal Reserve Act, as the Primary Dealer Credit Facility was, the Fed would have to reveal the firm names and amounts borrowed one year after the program had been terminated. But emergency operations conducted through the Fed’s so-called “open market” operations would not have to reveal the names of the firms and amounts borrowed until two years after the loans were made. Thus, it appears that in 2019 the Fed decided to make astronomical sums available to Wall Street’s trading houses not through a Primary Dealer Credit Facility (which it set up again in March 2020) but through its repo loan open market operations.

The repo loan market is an overnight loan market where banks, brokerage firms, mutual funds and others make one-day loans to each other against safe collateral, typically Treasury securities. Repo stands for “repurchase agreement.”

On September 17, 2019 the overnight loan rate spiked from an average of about 2 percent to 10 percent – signaling that one or more firms were in trouble. So the Fed effectively became the repo loan market on September 17, 2019 and exponentially grew the amount of loans it was making over the following months. Its repo loans lasted until July 2, 2020, by which time it had re-established the alphabet soup list of emergency loan programs from 2008.

The Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington D.C., an independent federal agency, outsources the vast majority of its emergency lending programs to the New York Fed, one of 12 privately owned regional Fed banks. The largest shareowners of the New York Fed are the following five Wall Street banks: JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of New York Mellon. Those five banks represent two-thirds of the eight Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs) in the United States. The other three G-SIBs are Bank of America, a shareowner in the Richmond Fed; Wells Fargo, a shareowner of the San Francisco Fed; and State Street, a shareowner in the Boston Fed.

We have now crunched the numbers for the New York Fed’s emergency repo loans for the periods in which it has thus far released the names of the borrowers: the last 14 days of September 2019 and the full fourth quarter of 2019. (The New York Fed is releasing the transaction data on a quarterly basis here. You have to delete the Reverse Repo transactions.)

After crunching the numbers, it now appears that the New York Fed may have intentionally thrown in a dizzying array of term loans to this one-day (overnight) repo loan market in order to disguise the fact that the trading units of the largest banks it supervises were the largest borrowers.

For example, the New York Fed offered one-day repo loans every business day but periodically also added 14-day, 28-day, 42-day and other term loans. Let’s say a trading firm took a $10 billion loan for one-day but on the same day took another $10 billion loan for a term of 14 days. The 14-day loan for $10 billion represented the equivalent of 14-days of borrowing $10 billion or a cumulative tally of $140 billion. If we simply tallied the column the New York Fed provided for “trade amount” per trading firm, it listed only $10 billion for that 14-day term loan and not the $140 billion it actually translated into.

When we tallied the New York Fed’s “trade amount” column for the fourth quarter of 2019, the New York Fed’s repo loans came to $4.5 trillion. But when we set up a new column that adjusted the loans by the number of days in the term, the Fed’s repo loans for the fourth quarter of 2019 came to $19.87 trillion, or 4.4 times the “trade amount” column.

Just six trading houses received 62 percent of the $19.87 trillion, as illustrated in the chart above. The parents of three of those firms, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, are shareowners of the New York Fed. The New York Fed is allowed to electronically create the trillions of dollars it loans at the push of a button. Below is the chart that shows the understated amounts borrowed using just the New York Fed’s “trade amount” column for the fourth quarter of 2019. Below that we’ve also adjusted the Fed’s repo loans to account for the number of days in the term for the period of September 17, 2019 through September 30, 2019. (The Fed released this transaction data separately at the end of September in 2021.) It shows, convincingly, that from the get-go of the financial crisis in 2019, the same three firms were at the center of the borrowing.

The Fed originally tried to pass the problem off to corporations draining liquidity from the financial system by withdrawing their quarterly tax payments in the fall of 2019. But among the largest depository banks in the country where those quarterly tax payments would be held are Wells Fargo Bank and Bank of America, in addition to JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup’s Citibank. But as the chart below shows, neither Wells Fargo nor Bank of America seem to be having any major liquidity issues. In addition, three of the largest borrowers (Nomura, Barclays and Deutsche) are the trading affiliates of foreign banks. Are we really expected to believe that U.S. corporations are holding their quarterly tax payments with the trading units of foreign banks?

The Fed’s audited financial statements show that on its peak day in 2020 the Fed’s repo loan operation had $495.7 billion in loans outstanding. On its peak day in 2019, the Fed’s repo loans outstanding stood at $259.95 billion. It should be noted that there was no COVID-19 pandemic crisis in the U.S. in 2019. The first case of COVID-19 in the U.S. was reported by the CDC on January 20, 2020.

It’s long past the time for the Senate Banking Committee and the House Financial Services Committee to haul the relevant parties to a hearing, put the witnesses under oath, and get to the bottom of this second clandestine Wall Street bailout by the Fed in the span of 11 years.

Gableman subpoenas voting machine companies in 2020 review

MADISON - Assembly Republicans' review of the 2020 election has expanded outside of Wisconsin with subpoenas to two companies that manufacture voting machines and software.

Former Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman in December issued orders to Colorado-based Dominion Voting Systems and Electronic Systems & Software of Nebraska seeking records related to the location of the companies' voting machines in Wisconsin during the primary and general elections in 2020.

Gableman also seeks information about staff members who worked on Wisconsin machines or communicated with anyone in Wisconsin during that period.

Gableman's subpoenas, first reported by WisPolitics, demand company officials produce the requested documents later this month and order them to testify in private at his rented office space in Brookfield. Gableman set a series of deadlines to receive the documents and testimony, with the earliest on Wednesday.

It is unclear what authority Gableman and Assembly Republicans have to demand information from out-of-state entities. They have no easy way to get the companies to comply with their subpoenas since neither is based in Wisconsin.

Multiple phone calls to Gableman and a spokeswoman for Assembly Speaker Robin Vos were not returned Friday. Officials with Dominion and Electronic Systems & Software also did not respond to questions from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Vos hired Gableman and gave him a $676,000 taxpayer-funded budget to review the outcome of the 2020 election and how the election was administered. The effort was launched as former President Donald Trump put pressure on Vos and other Republican legislative leaders in Wisconsin to do more to support his false claim that he was the winner of the 2020 election.

President Joe Biden beat Trump by about 21,000 votes in Wisconsin — a result that has been confirmed by recounts paid for by Trump, multiple court rulings and a statewide audit that revealed no widespread problems that could change the election's outcome.

Gableman was hired in June 2021 by Vos with the expectation he would wrap up his review by fall. Vos later extended his deadline to the end of 2021 and now has negotiated an extension to Gableman's contract.

Vos said last week he wanted recommendations from Gableman by the end of February, but a spokesman for Gableman told Wispolitics last week there is "no way" the review will wrap up by then.

With a subpoena to Dominion, Gableman is targeting a company that has been at the center for many conspiracy theories advanced by Trump and his allies in the days and weeks following Trump's defeat.

The company's machines are not used in Milwaukee, Madison and other cities with heavy concentrations of Democratic voters that Gableman has focused on.

Dominion filed a series of defamation lawsuits last year against Trump allies over spreading false claims that the company's machines changed the true outcome of the election by flipping votes for Trump to Biden's column.

The subpoenas to the voting machine companies were dated Dec. 28, the same day Gableman sent a raft of new subpoenas to the state Elections Commission and officials in the state’s five largest cities.

The cities provided Gableman with numerous documents on Thursday and Friday but said in some cases he had asked for too much. Attorneys for Green Bay and Madison sent him pointed letters saying they would not give him the birth dates or Social Security numbers of voters in response to his demand for all information about voters held by their computer systems.

They also questioned whether Gableman had the authority to act on behalf of the Assembly Elections Committee given that his contract with the state was set to expire at the end of last year.

“We respectfully request that you provide written evidence of your continued and current appointment by the Wisconsin State Assembly as legal counsel or an agent authorized to act on behalf of the Committee,” Madison City Attorney Michael Haas wrote in a Friday letter to Gableman.

Gableman has been meeting with partisans and election conspiracy theorists as he has conducted his work. In December, he told the Chippewa County Republican Party that he had seen no signs that Wisconsin's voting machines were hacked but believed they were vulnerable to hacks.

His comments came two months after he told a reporter he did not have an understanding of how elections work.

Looking back at the first Q drops, their approval of the MAP, and all that talk about map 1/2 done, what is your instinct on Q being able to count on anons getting their posts numbered correctly? Today on qr an anon raised the possibility that “NEWS”, as in news unlocks the map, could be points of a compass, North, East, West and South. If China refrains from aggressively easing property policy, more losses and defaults could be coming, he said. Should a developer with a national footprint run into trouble, home buyers worried that projects may not be completed could end up avoiding purchases from all private property firms.

The chief executives of America’s largest airlines warned of a “catastrophic disruption” to travel and shipping operations if telecommunication firms roll out their 5G technology as planned Wednesday without limiting the technology near US airports.

Verizon and AT&T have already twice delayed the launch of their new C-Band 5G service, due to warnings from airlines and aircraft manufacturers concerned that the new system might interfere with the devices planes use to measure altitude.

“We are writing with urgency to request that 5G be implemented everywhere in the country except within the approximate two miles of airport runways as defined by the FAA on January 19, 2022,” the CEOs said in a Monday letter obtained by AFP.

The executives, writing to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and other US government officials, highlighted the risk of “economic calamity” should Verizon and AT&T proceed with deploying the new technology before the necessary upgrades and changes have been made to aviation equipment.

“To be blunt, the nation’s commerce will grind to a halt,” they said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday it had approved some transponders to be safely operated within areas where 5G will be deployed, clearing “as many as 48 of the 88 airports most directly affected by 5G C-Band interference.”

But the airlines are worried that remaining limitations at those airports, as well as a large amount of equipment still uncertified, could trigger a crisis including the grounding of thousands of flights.

In addition to the transport secretary, their letter was addressed to the head of the FAA, the head of the Federal Communications Commission and the White House’s National Economic Council.

US airlines also have protested against the potential costs incurred.

The executives called on authorities to “take whatever action necessary to ensure that 5G is deployed except when towers are too close to airport runways until the FAA can determine how that can be safely accomplished without catastrophic disruption.”

The letter was signed by CEOs of major airlines including American, United, Delta and Southwest, as well as the leaders of shipping giants FedEx and UPS.

“Immediate intervention is needed to avoid significant operational disruption to air passengers, shippers, supply chain and delivery of needed medical supplies,” they wrote.

“In addition to the chaos caused domestically,” the letter continues, the lack of certified planes “could potentially strand tens of thousands of Americans overseas.”

Verizon and AT&T won contracts worth tens of billions of dollars last February to operate 5G in the 3.7-3.98 GHz frequency bands, and the rollout of the service was due to begin on December 5.

Unless the major telecommunications companies are blocked by federal regulators or reach an agreement with the airlines, they are now scheduled to turn on their 5G service nationwide on January 19.

The New York Fed just issued a statement that is is rescheduling today's planned Treasury Purchase due to "technical difficulties":

Due to technical difficulties, today’s Treasury outright purchase operation - scheduled for 10:10 AM in the 4.5 to 7 year sector for up to $6.025 billion - is being rescheduled.

It is now scheduled to take place Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 10:10 AM. Information on Treasury securities operations can be found on the New York Fed’s webpage.

Redlegs

Red Legs originally referred to a specific paramilitary outfit that organized in Kansas at the height of the Civil War.

The men who joined the group called themselves the Red Legged Scouts and their stated purpose was to serve as scouts and spies for the Union Army. The Red Legs were never officially mustered into the Union Army and there are no formal unit histories; however, their deeds along the border became notorious among Missourians and notable among Kansans.

26-year-old Swiss sprinter and Olympic athlete, Sarah Atcho, was diagnosed with pericarditis five days after receiving a Pfizer booster shot, the Covid world reported.

Sarah Atcho announced on her social media accounts on Monday that she was diagnosed with pericarditis (inflammation of the thin membrane surrounding the heart).

Atcho previously received the Moderna vaccine. She decided to take the Pfizer vaccine for her booster after she was told that it was safer than Moderna.

According to her post, she received her booster shot on December 22nd. Then on December 27th, she started to feel dizzy and felt tightness in the chest.

At the end of her post, Atcho admitted that she was upset and frustrated claiming that nobody is talking about the side effects of the COVID vaccines.

Obviously as you know, I’m trying to be as transparent as I can and now is more important than ever.

On December 22 I got my booster vaccination because I didn’t want to struggle with this when the season started. I was told that it was safer to get Pfizer (even though I had Moderna the first time) to avoid cardiac side effects.

On December 27 I felt a tightness in the chest and started feeling dizzy while walking up the stairs. This happened a few more times until I decided to check with a cardiologist who diagnosed me with pericarditis (inflammation of the thin membrane surrounding the heart).

I am now not allowed to get my heart rate up for a few weeks to allow my heart to rest and heal from the inflammation.

I am still doing everything I can with my coach to keep my muscles moving and he’s doing a GREAT job, thank you @patsaile !!

I have to admit that I am upset at the situation because we don’t talk enough about the side effects. I feel helpless since this is completely out of my control…

I am glad the vaccine helped avoid many deaths and reduce the pressure on the hospitals and hospital staff however I am frustrated that myself as well as other young and healthy people are suffering from these heavy side effects.

PRINCE Andrew's Twitter account appears to have been quietly deleted - as the embattled royal is blasted by furious Brits over a new doc that aired tonight.

Account @thedukeofyork no longer exists on the social media site, although it is believed to have been running within the past couple of days.

It's understood the page was available to view just two days ago, but has now been taken down

it comes as viewers hit out at the royal following ITV doc Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Paedophile, which detailed Andrew's relationships with the late financier and Epstein's madam.

The show, presented by Ranvir Singh, revealed Maxwell visited Andrew at Buckingham Palace four times in a single day and was free to come and go as she pleased.

Former Palace protection officer Paul Page said he "suspected" the pair may have had an "intimate relationship".

Meanwhile, Maxwell's brother Ian - who wept during his interview - said the pair were "good friends" - because "prince, pauper - it made no difference to her".

"She took no s*** from anyone," he said.

Those watching the show at home took to Twitter to slam Andrew tonight.

Biden Picks Democratic Donor Jane Hartley as U.K. Ambassador

Joe Biden plans to nominate Jane Hartley as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, picking a longtime Democratic donor for one of the most prestigious diplomatic posts.

Hartley, who served as U.S. ambassador to France during the Obama administration, was a “bundler” for the Biden campaign, soliciting checks from a broad swath of donors. If confirmed, the former Democratic aide and consultant will move into the historic Winfield House, a sprawling 12-acre estate in London’s Regent’s Park.

Biden is announcing Hartley’s pick Wednesday, along with several others, according to the White House. Nominees are subject to Senate confirmation.

Two other top donors Elizabeth Bagley and Alan Leventhal are among those the president selected to serve as ambassadors. Bagley, the widow of R.J. Reynolds tobacco heir Smith Bagley, will be nominated as U.S. envoy to Brazil. Bagley served as the ambassador to Portugal during the Clinton administration, and was a major fundraiser for the Biden campaign. The president selected Leventhal, the founder of Beacon Capital Partners, as ambassador to Denmark.

A career diplomat, Alexander Laskaris, will be nominated to serve as U.S. ambassador to Chad.

US Giving Ukraine $200M More In Military Aid As Blinken Talks "Diplomacy"

On Wednesday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during the latter's trip and meeting with Ukraine's leaders in Kiev for an additional $200 million in military aid. The new aid for weapons and other military hardware was first revealed as being approved in December, but finally confirmed this week.

Zelensky told Blinken during their Wednesday meeting, which specifically came in response to the Russian forces build-up near Ukraine's border: “This [military] support not only speaks to our strategic plans of Ukraine joining the alliance, but more importantly to the level of our military, our military supplies." The Ukrainian leaders was of course referencing Kiev's desire to be fast-tracked into NATO, which has been they key source of contention, particularly during last week's largely unsuccessful Russia-NATO dialogue.

Zelensky stressed further according to the AP: "If we want dramatically fast steps in modernizing the military, we need help especially in these tough times." He added. while addressing Blinken, "Your visit is very important. It underlines once again your powerful support of our independence and sovereignty."

Blinken in turn claimed that a Russian invasion could come at any moment. He affirmed the US stands ready to help - though stopping short of any direct pledge of sending troops - in such a scenario as a Russian offensive. "The Ukrainian people chose a democratic and European path in 1991. They took to the Maidan to defend that choice in 2013, and unfortunately ever since you have faced relentless aggression from Moscow," he said.

However, things got clarified on Jan. 18, 2022, when Julian Roepcke published a tweet today, stating that the German MoD did not deny the C-17s flying from Brize Norton through the German Airspace.

In fact, it seems that the decision to avoid the German airspace was made deliberately by the RAF planners, and the British C-17s were not really forced to fly around the German territory: aircraft carrying specific kinds of cargo and/or weapons require a dedicated clearance that the UK did not apply for (for reasons yet to be disclosed – although time might have been a factor here); hence the route avoiding the German airspace.

Hedge Fund Fees in Crosshairs as Gensler Lays Out SEC’s 2022 Agenda

Gary Gensler is putting hedge funds and private equity firms on notice that the fees they charge clients are going to draw more scrutiny from Wall Street’s main regulator in 2022.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will look at what fund managers charge as part of a broader effort to boost efficiency, competition and transparency in markets, Gensler said Wednesday. The comments follow similar remarks the SEC chief made last year when he took aim at hedge fund fees, including the long-standing 2-and-20 model for charging clients.

“If we can use our authorities to bring greater transparency and competition into that market, that helps portfolio companies on the one hand, and the pensions and endowments that are investing in that space on the other,” Gensler said in prepared remarks for an event hosted by the Exchequer Club of Washington, D.C. “Similarly, if we can drive efficiencies across other key sectors of the capital markets, that too would help issuers and investors.”

In addition to the asset management industry, Gensler said staff would review equity, bond and Treasury trading for areas to make improvements.

Another area of focus for the SEC this year will be the role predictive analytics and artificial intelligence play in financial markets, Gensler said.

“While these developments can increase access and choice, they also raise important public policy considerations, including conflicts of interest, bias, and systemic risks,” Gensler said, reiterating concerns that he has previously raised.
