@RepMontague

The WHITE HOUSE is now encouraging Spotify to take “further action” against Joe Rogan’s podcast.

This is no longer a debate about a private company.

This is the WHITE HOUSE telling a private company to police content.

The First Amendment forbids this!

Europe’s Banks Step Up Profit Pledges With Higher Rates in Sight

As interest rates finally inch up, European banks are telling investors to expect something they haven’t seen in almost 15 years: returns in the teens.

Several of the region’s top lenders recently raised their profitability targets as they expect higher income from lending. The extent of the upgrades ranges across the whole of Western Europe, from Nordea Bank Abp in Helsinki to Banco Santander SA in Madrid. Both promise a return of at least 13% on the capital provided by shareholders as higher rates buoy earnings and the impact of the pandemic eases.

Other competitors may follow suit. Lenders including BNP Paribas SA, Commerzbank AG and Deutsche Bank AG will hold events next month to lay out their future strategy, with profitability a focus of investors. Deutsche Bank has yet to reach a return on tangible equity of 8% this year, but with peers raising targets, the pressure is on to outline more ambitious goals.

While the metrics used differ slightly from bank to bank, the message is the same: They’re ready to make money again, after more than a decade of low and even negative interest rates during which returns rarely topped 10% on the invested capital.

Record inflation in the euro region is one reason behind the optimism. Surging prices have driven up the likelihood of interest rate increases by the European Central Bank. The Bank of England on Thursday lifted its key rate by a quarter point, with four policy makers opting for a larger increase.

Higher interest rates typically mean higher income from lending. Spain’s BBVA has said an increase in the yield curve by 100 basis points would drive up net interest income in the euro area by more than 20%.

But higher rates can also lead to more defaults. The latter hasn’t been a big concern for banks so far, after they stashed away billions for potentially bad loans during the pandemic. That’s allowed them to actually release some of that money as fallout from the pandemic eases.

In addition, lenders may start reaping the benefits from painful cost-cutting efforts carried out over the past years, when profits were hard to come by. Many banks have embarked on digitalization drives while cutting staff and branches, leading to higher efficiency.

Expectations for rising profits have set off a race for the highest payout to shareholders. UniCredit Chief Executive Officer Andrea Orcel in December promised to return at least 16 billion euros over the next several years. Other lenders including UBS Group AG and Banco Santander SA have since said they want to boost payouts to investors.

The long period of poor profits has weighed heavily on valuations of European banks, many of which are worth a fraction of their competitors in the U.S. Several bank heads in Europe have expressed their expectation that improving profitability will close the gap and strengthen their position should M&A opportunities arise.

Bank of England makes consecutive interest rate hikes for first time since 2004

The Bank of England on Thursday announced its second consecutive interest-rate increase, the first time it’s done back-to-back hikes since 2004.

By a 5-to-4 vote, the Bank of England voted to take rates up by a quarter point to 0.5%. Inflation reached 5.4% in December, and prices are set to rise further. The U.K. regulator Ofgem separately announced a 54% jump in the energy price cap, a move that is effective in April. The Bank of England forecasts inflation will peak at 7.25% in April. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

“Given the current tightness of the labour market and continuing signs of greater persistence in domestic cost and price pressures, the Committee judges that an increase in Bank Rate of 0.25 percentage points is warranted at this meeting,” the central bank said. The surprise to markets came as the four-person minority wanted a half-point rate hike. Yields on the 2-year gilt TMBMKGB-02Y, 1.159% rose by nearly 12 basis points, and the pound GBPUSD, 0.27% rose as high as $1.3628 from $1.3567 shortly before the decision. “Ahead of today’s policy meeting, investors were convinced of a rate hike and the BoE delivered, although the fact that the committee only narrowly avoided a 0.5% increase on a 5-4 vote is more hawkish than we expected. The key question for markets now is how much further the BoE can go in tightening policy,” said Jonathan Sparks, CIO, UK and Channel Islands, Private Banking and Wealth Management at HSBC. The central bank also said it will stop reinvesting the proceeds of its portfolio of £875 billion in government bonds, but won’t begin selling them until rates have climbed to at least 1%.

The FTSE 100 UKX, -0.39% slipped 0.2%, in line with cautious global sentiment after the weak outlook from Facebook parent Meta Platforms.

Rep. Jamie Raskin failed to report huge stock payout for his wife, a Biden Fed nominee

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin violated a federal conflict-of-interest law by failing to properly disclose stock shares that his wife – President Biden's nominee to be the Federal Reserve's top banking regulator – received for her work at a Colorado-based financial technology company, a source familiar with the matter told FOX Business.

The Maryland Democrat disclosed information about the transaction in August 2021 – eight months after Sarah Bloom Raskin sold 195,936 shares of Reserve Trust for $1.5 million, according to a federal financial disclosure. The document listed the initial transaction date as Dec. 18, 2020. Lawmakers' spouses are allowed to trade in companies or industries that their partners may help regulate. But Jamie Raskin's failure to promptly disclose the shares that his wife sold marks a violation of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act. The law – frequently referred to as the STOCK Act – was passed in 2012 in an attempt to increase transparency on Capitol Hill; the law made it illegal for members of Congress and their families to profit from inside information and requires lawmakers to report stock trades to Congress within 45 days.

Jamie Raskin, a prominent lawmaker who led the second impeachment trial of former President Trump, did not immediately respond to a FOX Business request for comment. But the Democrat has acknowledged the late filing and told Business Insider that the omission occurred because the transaction happened just before their 25-year-old son, Thomas, died on Dec. 31, 2020.

"We lost our son during the reporting period, and I filed the report late," the congressman told Insider.

The oversight also comes at a pivotal moment for Sarah Bloom Raskin, who was formally nominated last month by Biden to serve as the Federal Reserve's vice chairwoman for supervision.

As vice chair for supervision, Sarah Bloom Raskin – a Duke University law professor who has held high-level jobs at both the Treasury Department and the Fed – would oversee annual stress tests that review bank safety and liquidity. Her nomination has been welcomed by progressive senators and advocacy groups, who think she will take a tougher stance against Wall Street than her predecessor, Randal Quarles, a Trump nominee who stepped down last month.

But she has faced fierce pushback from Republican lawmakers concerned that her stance on issues like climate change could endanger the central bank's independence.

The Fed nominee has previously argued that all financial institutions should re-evaluate their relationships with energy companies and has advocated for a push toward sustainable investments that do not depend on carbon and fossil fuels. If banks and other financial institutions do not take these steps to distance themselves from fossil-fuel companies, Sarah Bloom Raskin has said the Fed should penalize them.

Sarah Bloom Raskin has also drawn scrutiny for her work at Reserve Trust: The nonbank fintech company is the only one of its like to have received special access to the Fed's payment system – an occurrence that happened when Sarah Bloom Raskin served as the company's director.

Access to Federal Reserve services is sought after by many fintechs and other nontraditional financial services companies, because there are a number of benefits, including the ability to borrow from the Fed's discount window and to earn interest from deposits at the central bank. Without a master account, nonbank financial institutions must partner with banks insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in order to tap those services.

Canadian military will not break up the truckers’ Freedom Convoy in Ottawa: report

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/canadian-military-has-no-plans-to-break-up-truckers-freedom-convoy-in-ottawa/

This contradicts a report in the Toronto Star that military involvement was 'an option'.

Canada’s military will not be breaking up the Freedom Convoy in Ottawa.

Rumours have circulated in legacy media that the Canadian military will dispel the Freedom Convoy protests in the nation’s capital, but a source in Ottawa says that isn’t the case.

Paul Vieria, the Canadian correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, tweeted yesterday that a spokesman for Canada’s defence minister, Anita Anand, said: “The Canadian Armed Forces are not involved in law enforcement in this situation, and there are no plans for such CAF involvement.”

Spokesman for Canada’s defence minister, following comments from Ottawa police chief Sloly on possible need for military’s help in trucker protest: “The Canadian Armed Forces are not involved in law enforcement in this situation, and there are no plans for such CAF involvement.”

— Paul Vieira (@paulvieira) February 3, 2022

This comment contradicts a report by the Toronto Star that the Ottawa police might seek assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces.

In a similar fashion, legacy media said there had been clashes between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the trucker blockade of the Canada-US border in Alberta, but this was proven to be false.

In 2020, Prime Minister Just Trudeau stated adamantly that it was “never appropriate” to use the military against Canadian citizens.

Oil extends gains above $90 a barrel as winter storm hits U.S.

Oil prices climbed on Friday, extending sharp gains in the previous session sparked by persistent supply concerns and as frigid weather cascades across the U.S., threatening to further disrupt fragile oil supplies.

Brent crude was up 16 cents, or 0.2%, to $91.27 a barrel by 1:02 GMT, after rising $1.16 on Thursday.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 28 cents, or 0.3%, to $90.55 a barrel, having gained $2.01 cents the previous day to settle above $90 for the first time since Oct. 6, 2014.

Both benchmarks are headed for their seventh straight weekly gain.

So, I'm sorry but how in the hell do you guys keep up with anons posts and Notables?

I try like hell to keep up but hardly ever am able.

How to Keep Up with Notes During a Fast Bread

I

During a fast bread, i:

- rely more on noms, let anons do more heavy lifting. you do it long enough and it becomes second nature. Also helps if you have a decent internet speed (I don't which is why I can't do the entire bake and in this role). Suggest pairing up with a baker and doing notes for them first-most would not hesitate. Get proficient at that and the rest is a mechanical function

- don't always check for dups in qresear.ch.

- pass over current news items unless directly relevant to Q drops, current digs or POTUS' activities.

- barely look at anything that's hard to read or hard to grok fast. Let anons catch the really good stuff.

- Ask "anything missing?" or "any noms?" Put the ball in their court more.

II

Practice and a decent bit of memorization.

Once you have the ever-repeated shill material recognized, spotting big material becomes easier.

Reviewing Notables from a few days prior also helps with knowing when duplicate material crops up. Not a bad thing when it does - some Anons don't read the Notables, but many do and will appreciate a callback to prior breads if you can do so readily.

Once you have those things/materials in mind, "keeping up" is more of an automatic bullshit marker, whereby, once it's marked, you can spot the new and potentially Notable things with ease.

III

- You do it long enough and it becomes second nature.

- It also helps if you have a decent internet speed (I don't which is why I can't do the entire bake and in this role)

- Suggest pairing up with a baker and doing notes for them first-most would not hesitate.

- Get proficient at that and the rest is a mechanical function

IV

During Q breads:

- Focus on Q, first and foremost.

- Notables that are quick and easy to snag will make the cut; others will receive a "Please post at the top of next bread" request.

- If it's a Rally Bread or a major Q post spree that brings bread times to sub-30 minutes, Notables for that Bread are either

TO BE COLLECTED or NO NOTABLES OWING TO HIGH ENERGY

Saudi Aramco Restarts Discussions on Fresh Share Sale That Could Top 2019 IPO

Saudi Aramco has started preliminary discussions on a fresh stock offering that could raise more money than its landmark listing, people familiar with the matter said.

The company has held talks with advisers on the potential share sale that may bring in more than the $29.4 billion Aramco raised from its 2019 IPO, the people said, declining to be named as the matter is private. No timetable has been set for a sale, they said.

The talks come amid a rally in oil that’s pushed prices to a seven-year high. Dow Jones reported earlier that Aramco may sell as much as a $50 billion stake, or 2.5% of the company at current prices.

Aramco and the Saudi government’s Centre for International Communications didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

KEK... I smell a night shift pic

Kim Jon Un rides white horse into sunset in bizarre new propaganda video

February 4, 2022

This is the bizarre moment newly slim Kim Jong-un rides a white horse in a propaganda video as he brushes off health fears.

In fresh footage aired on state-run TV, the despot can be seen sitting atop the pony as it gallops through a forest, while another clip shows him on the horse at a beach taking in a sunset.

A white horse is a key symbol of his family’s dynastic rule, with the clips of him on the pony bookending a new documentary that touts his economic leadership.

Video revealed in the documentary, titled 2021: A Great Victorious Year, also shows Kim apparently struggling to walk down a slope after his dramatic weight loss sparked concerns about his health.

Regime propaganda claimed the despot’s body “completely withered away” last year out of “suffering” for the people of his impoverished nation.

It comes after a month-long disappearance that raised fresh doubts about who was in charge of the nuclear-armed pariah state.

Kim reemerged in December looking gaunt and thinner than ever after he reportedly shed 44 pounds in the summer.

But in new footage from the documentary, the tyrant – wearing a baggy shirt and trousers that hang off him – is seen gingerly stepping down a ramp on a rainy construction site last August.

He goes down sideways slowly placing his feet on wooden battens – while his uniformed lackeys walk normally down the slope facing forwards.

Addressing Kim’s weight loss, the narrator says: “He showed us his fatherly side by doggedly braving snow, rain and wind while taking on the fate of the nation and people like his own children.”

“His body completely withered away, and he showed his motherly side by greatly suffering and worrying to realize the dreams of the people.”

According to a top doctor, Kim is likely to have had a gastric sleeve operation to help him shed 40lbs from his flabby frame.

Dr. Kenneth Dekleva, a former physician-diplomat at the US State Department, told The Sun Online that a bariatric procedure is the most likely reason for the North Korean leader’s dramatic weight loss.

The analyst, who is a senior Fellow at the George HW Bush Foundation for US-China Relations, however said Kim likely remains at risk of a heart attack or stroke despite cleaning up his health.

Dr. Dekleva told The Sun Online: “The rapidity and amount of his recent weight loss is consistent with a bariatric surgery procedure, probably a gastric sleeve or bypass procedure.”

Kim’s dramatic weight swings have long been the subject of speculation.

South Korean spies said he put on more than 14 pounds a year after taking power, and he ballooned to a rumored 308 pounds after gorging on cheese and wine.

Doctors warned he was a “heart attack waiting to happen” and at high risk of early death.

He is also reported to suffer from gout – joint pain linked to a rich diet – which could perhaps explain his difficulty on the slope.

The propaganda doc comes after Kim launched his seventh missile test of the year – including what is thought to be its biggest one since 2017.

In the latest launch last Sunday, officials in Japan reported the firing of a possible ballistic missile from Jagang Province.

Facebook’s Fall of 26.39 Percent Yesterday Delivered Billions in Losses to 401(k)s and Public Pension Plans

From 401(k) plans to mutual funds to the federal government workers’ pension plan to foreign central bank stock portfolios – everyone is feeling Facebook’s pain today. The parent company’s stock (Meta Platforms, Inc.) lost 26.39 percent of its value yesterday – in one trading session.

That’s what happens when the Fed is allowed, with no restraints from Congress, to fuel a bubble market that allows one company — that pays no dividend and has no barriers for upstarts like TikTok to steal its user base — to gain a market cap of over $1 trillion.

On June 28 of last year, Facebook’s stock closed above a $1 trillion market cap for the first time. It has been on a price decline since last September and when the stock market’s closing bell rang yesterday, it was a $647 billion stock. Its market cap decline yesterday was the largest decline for any one stock in one day in the history of the stock market.

The pain is going to be widely felt. According to Yahoo! Finance, large mutual fund and ETF families are the largest owners of Facebook shares with Vanguard Group holding $62 billion as of September 29, 2021. The next top three holders, as of the same date, were Blackrock with $52.9 billion; FMR (parent of Fidelity) with $43.2 billion and T. Rowe Price with $32.9 billion. (The funds may have lightened their positions since their last reporting date.)

We checked two foreign central banks that file their stock holdings with the SEC. As of September 30, 2021, Norway’s central bank, Norges Bank, reported owning 27.7 million shares of Facebook with a market value of $7.27 billion. The Swiss National Bank reported owning $3.2 billion of Facebook.

Facebook trades on Nasdaq, the wonderful folks who gave us the dot.com crash of 2000. Between 2000 to 2002, Nasdaq lost 78 percent of its value. In the midst of the crash, New York Times reporter Ron Chernow correctly described what was happening like this:

“Let us be clear about the magnitude of the Nasdaq collapse. The tumble has been so steep and so bloody — close to $4 trillion in market value erased in one year — that it amounts to nearly four times the carnage recorded in the October 1987 crash.”

Chernow called the Nasdaq stock market a “lunatic control tower that directed most incoming planes to a bustling, congested airport known as the New Economy while another, depressed airport, the Old Economy, stagnated with empty runways. The market functioned as a vast, erratic mechanism for misallocating capital across America,” Chernow wrote.

The lunatic control tower today has directed Americans’ life savings into Chinese companies that won’t comply with U.S. auditing standards; blank-check companies called SPACs that don’t have to comply with IPO listing standards; and endless social media companies cannibalizing one another. To rational minds, none of this sounds like the way to sustain America’s competitive position in the world.

Lawsuit Claims Foreign Powers Sought To Interfere In 2016 Election To Help Hillary Clinton

Felix Sater claims the Kazakhstan players were seeking to interfere in the 2016 election to benefit Hillary Clinton.

On Feb. 3, long-time Trump associate Felix Sater filed a cross-complaint in a New York federal court. The complaint alleges that Russian and Kazakhstan-connected individuals and entities conducted “a shadow intelligence operation of Sater and Trump for the purpose of manufacturing information to harm Donald Trump politically,” including by providing Christopher Steele a PowerPoint presentation riddled with lies Steele later fed to the FBI.

Sater’s cross suit comes nearly three years after the City of Almaty, Kazakhstan, and BTA Bank filed suit against Sater, two of the companies he owned, a former business associate, and that associate’s LLCs, in City of Almaty, Kazakhstan v. Sater.

In that lawsuit, filed in May 2019, Almaty and BTA Bank alleged that Sater and the other defendants helped Mukhtar Ablyazov, the former chairman of the BTA Bank, and Viktor Khrapunov, the former mayor of the City of Almaty, launder money the duo had stolen from the plaintiffs. In the case, the plaintiffs sought recovery of millions of dollars in stolen funds, based on claims of fraud, conspiracy, unjust enrichment, and conversion.

While that case has been pending in a federal district court in New York since spring 2019, on Thursday Sater filed for the first time counterclaims against Almaty and BTA Bank. In yesterday’s filing, Sater also added the Republic of Kazakhstan and Arcanum (Asia) Ltd. as parties.

In his lawsuit, Sater claimed that in June 2015, BTA Bank, Almaty, and Kazakhstan, referred to as the Kazakh Parties throughout the court filing, entered a “confidential assistance agreement” or “CAA,” in which they agreed to pay Sater (through his company, Litco) $100,000 per month, plus a percentage of the funds recovered, for Sater’s help in recovering assets stolen by Ablyazov.

The CAA, however, was merely a “guise,” Sater alleged, with Arcanum and the Kazakh Parties instead conspiring “to leak false and defamatory information about Sater to media outlets including ABC News.” “This was part of a concerted effort to falsely (and absurdly) portray Sater, a longtime business partner of Donald Trump, as a Russian agent and Kremlin stooge,” the lawsuit alleged.

Until January 2021, Sater had no reason to know that Arcanum and the Karakh Parties were working against Sater and Trump, according to the lawsuit. It was only then, when the FBI released the 302 interview summary of the FBI’s interview with Steele, that Sater claimed he learned the truth.

In the 302 summary of the FBI’s September 18, 2017, interview of Steele, the agents reported that Steele said that his firm Orbis “was involved in some Kazakhstan-related” work and “some of the material from that work obviously falls within the bounds of the Special Counsel.”

Here, Steele said he “was working on a Kazakh-related project involving an individual by the name of Ablyazov, embezzlement from BTA Bank, pyramid schemes, and connections to Felix Sater and Trump Soho.” According to the interview summary, “Steele said that they want RICO up and running in the United States.”

The agents then noted that “Steele brought along a PowerPoint presentation from the company Arcanum explaining the Sater connection.” The 302 summary added that “this information was slated to be provided to the US Department of Justice and the FBI as it involves a corrupt American official.”

Shortly after Sater became aware of the FBI 302 interview summary of Steele, Sater retained co-counsels John Snyder and Tom Sima in the spring of 2021. According to Snyder, Sater retained the two New York attorneys because they had previously handled sensitive matters involving Kazakhstan and because Sima speaks fluent Russian and has 20 years of experience and contacts in Kazakhstan.

The FBI 302 interview summary of Steele was a “real eye-opener,” Snyder said in an interview, with Sater claiming in his lawsuit that he “was shocked to learn that the Kazakhs [Parties] and Arcanum engaged him under the CAA in bad faith.”

“From the beginning, Arcanum (a private intelligence firm staffed by former officials from the Clinton administration,” Sater alleged, “and their attorneys Boies Schiller (a Democratic Party law firm) intended to use the CAA as a pretext for gathering intelligence against Sater, with the intent of harming Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.”

Sater further alleged that after he learned of the FBI 302, he “investigated further and learned that the Kazakh plot against Sater was coordinated by Karim Massimov, Chairman of the Kazakh KGB and his henchman Kenes Rakishav.” Both “Massimov and Rakishev were actively seeking influence with American politicians” during this time, according to the lawsuit.

The complaint continued: “In 2016, they believed that they would be rewarded for helping the Hillary Clinton campaign (who was considered certain to win the election) by smearing Sater and Trump.” Their “effort to curry favor with prominent American politicians included,” according to Sater, “lavishing money on Hunter Biden, who called Rakishev a ‘close friend.’”

In the middle of 2021, the complaint then explained, Sater “reached out to the Kazakhs [parties] to discuss the FBI 302 and Arcanum’s plot against Sater and Trump.” The parties then proceeded to engage in mediation and settlement discussions, until, according to Sater, unrest in Kazakhstan led to Massimov’s arrest and Rakishev fleeing the country. At that point, Sater learned the Kazakhs were walking away from settlement negotiations.

With his attempts to resolve his differences with the Kazakhs Parties and Arcanum privately stalled, Sater resorted to filing the present lawsuit, according to yesterday’s filing, which set forth five separate claims.

In Count I, Sater alleged Aranum defamed him when it drafted a PowerPoint and other communications that falsely claimed: that Sater was involved in embezzlement from BTA Bank; that Sater was involved in pyramid schemes; that Sater was involved in official U.S. corruption; that Sater committed misconduct with respect to the Trump SoHo project; that Sater had committed RICO violations; and that Sater, a married man, was “involved” with Ablyazov’s daughter.

Count II charged the Kazakh Parties with controlling and directing the activities of Arcanum, including its preparation of the PowerPoint presentation about Sater, which Arcanum then provided to Steele, with the intention that Steele then submitted it to the FBI.

The third count alleged a breach of fiduciary duty claim against Arcanum and the Kazakh Parties. Here, Sater argued he “had a confidential relationship with Arcanum, the Kazakh Parties, and their counsel Boies Schiller,” and that “Arcanum, the Kazakh Parties, and their counsel Boies Schiller had a duty to maintain confidentiality with respect to information supplied by Sater.” Sater then alleged that “Arcanum and the Kazakh Parties breached their fiduciary duty by obtaining information from Sater on false pretenses, then disseminating such confidential information (together with false information) to Christopher Steele and others.”

Sater’s fourth claim alleged a “Fraudulent Misrepresentation” count against Arcanum and the Kazakh Parties. This cause of action was premised on these defendants “falsely represented their purpose and objective,” to “gain[] access to confidential information about Sater, his contacts around the world, his dealings with Donald Trump, and many other subjects.”

“This fraudulently obtained information was weaponized against Sater and Trump,” the complaint then alleged, adding, “as evidenced by the fact that Arcanum assembled a dossier on Sater, which was turned over to Christopher Steele and the FBI.” “The same information was then leaked to ABC News,” according to the complaint.

The fifth and final claim alleged a breach of professional ethics against Arcanum and the Kazakh Parties. It was premised on the defendants’ allegedly fraudulent concealment of “the fact that the Kazakh KGB, Arcanum, and Boies Schiller were conducting an opposition research project against Sater and Trump, . . .”

In an email comment received yesterday evening, Matthew L. Schwartz, a partner at the law firm of Boies Schiller Flexner and counsel for BTA Bank and the City of Almaty, Kazakhstan, said, “Felix Sater’s filing is nothing more than conspiracy theories and desperation dressed up like a lawsuit.” “Before it was filed,” Schwartz continued, “we explained in excruciating detail why it is factually, legally, and ethically baseless—including being contradicted by Sater’s own sworn testimony.” The BTA Bank and City of Almaty attorney added that they are “confident that the court will see through his tactics.”

Schwartz and his legal team will need to file formal responses to Sater’s lawsuit, which will surely elaborate on this theme. But, in addition to BTA Bank and Almaty, the newly sued third-party defendant Arcanum, once properly served, will also need to answer the complaint.

Given that Steele’s 302 interview summary states that the former MI6 agent presented the FBI with “a PowerPoint presentation from the company Arcanum explaining the Sater connection,” what Arcanum has to say in response will be fascinating to see.

Likewise fascinating to watch will be the media’s response to Sater’s lawsuit and his claim that the Kazakhstan players were seeking to interfere in the 2016 election to benefit Hillary Clinton, as well as the allegations of corruption Sater levies against Hunter Biden.

Something tells me, however, that there will be less coverage of Sater now that he isn’t seen as a way to destroy Trump.

For The First Time In 10 Years, Amazon Quietly Repurchased Over $1 Billion In Stock As The Price Tumbled

There reason why Amazon stock is surging today - and after the close yesterday - may not be entirely due to the company's earnings, which despite the solid AWC performance and Prime membership hike, were actually rather soggy: the company itself is aggressively repurchasing its own stock (not long after Jeff Bezos was selling his).

While Amazon did not mention it anywhere in its earnings release, in the AMZN 10-K filed this morning, the company disclosed that it had repurchased half a million shares of common stock for $1.3bn between January 1 and February 2. It probably also repurchased (a lot) more after the close on Feb 3, when the stock price exploded 18% higher in very thin volumes, effectively repricing the stock entirely after Facebook's implosion earlier in the day, but we'd be guessing.

Why is this important? Because as Morgan Stanley strategist Brian Nowak writes, "while more symbolic than material, we think it is a positive signal. Our work shows AMZN has timed past buybacks well too (averaging a theoretical 100% average 12 month return)."

According to Nowak, it's been 10 years since AMZN repurchased any common stock - the last time it did so was Q1 2012 - and AMZN still has ~$5 billion of repurchases authorized from its February 2016 authorization.

The Morgan Stanley strategist then goes on to note that Amazon has only repurchased shares 5 quarters of its company history– 1Q:12, 4Q:11, 4Q:08, 1Q:07, and 3Q:06, and - more importantly - historically AMZN's repurchases "have been positive signals about the equity value, as they would have earned an average return of 42% over a 6 month return period." Similarly, the average 12- and 24- month returns on Amazon's share repurchases (assuming they bought and held the stock) would have been 100% and 135%, respectively.

While Nowak concludes that he remains bullish the (buy-rated) AMZN for many fundamental reasons, and does not expect for AMZN to materially shrink its float in the near-term, he does note that "as big tech (GOOGL/FB/AAPL/MSFT) become more shareholder friendly (buybacks, disclosure, etc) we are happy to see AMZN participate (new ad disclosure last night, better color on capex and now repurchases)."
