China deployed 71 warplanes to skies around Taiwan in a chilling 'strike drill', then blamed the US for 'provocations' and 'collusion' with self-governing island - in one of the biggest daily incursions to date.

Sixty fighter jets took part in the drills, including six Su-30 warplanes, some of China's most advanced, Taipei's defense ministry said in a Twitter post on Monday.

The People's Liberation Army said it had conducted a 'strike drill' on Sunday in response to unspecified 'provocations' and 'collusion' between the United States and the self-ruled island.

Data from Taiwan's defense ministry showed those drills were one of the largest since they started releasing daily tallies.

Forty-seven of the sorties crossed into the island's air defense identification zone (ADIZ), the third-highest daily incursion on record, according to AFP's database.

Beijing has ramped up military, diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan under President Xi Jinping as relations have deteriorated.

One of the pressure tactics China has increasingly used is probing Taiwan's ADIZ with its warplanes.

So far this year, there have bee more than 1,700 such incursions compared with 969 in 2021 and 146 in 2020.

China did not specify the number of aircraft mobilized for Sunday's exercises, nor the exact location of these maneuvers.

Taiwan's daily tally showed most of the incursions crossed the 'median line' which runs down the Taiwan Strait that separates the two sides, while a smaller number went through Taiwan's southwestern ADIZ.

Many nations maintain air defense identification zones, including the United States, Canada, South Korea, Japan and China.

They are not the same as a country's airspace. Instead, they encompass a much wider area, in which any foreign aircraft is expected to announce itself to local aviation authorities.

Taiwan's ADIZ is much larger than its airspace. It overlaps part of China's ADIZ and even includes some of the mainland.The PLA said Sunday's exercises were 'a firm response to the escalating collusion and provocations by the US and the Taiwanese authorities'.

Beijing has been incensed by US President Joe Biden's handling of Taiwan – especially after he said Washington would defend it militarily if attacked by China.

The prospect of a Chinese invasion has increasingly rattled both Western nations and many of China's neighbors.

Lung immunopathology refers to exaggerated inflammation that envelopes the gas-exchanging units of the lung after viral infection and which may interfere with oxygenation. Nobel Peace Prize winner has already been sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's pro-democracy leader, will hear her final rulings in a military court on Friday, according to several people with knowledge of the matter. The final arguments for the last five remaining charges against Suu Kyi took place at the closed-door court inside Naypyitaw prison on Monday. Suu Kyi is accused of violating anti-corruption laws for breaching financial regulations regarding the procurement and hiring of helicopters. One person told Nikkei that the lawyer of Suu Kyi pleaded not guilty because the lawsuits are based on baseless accusations. Since the Myanmar military overthrew Suu Kyi's democratically elected government in February 2021, she has been charged with 19 criminal violations, including breaching the official secret act, incitement against the military, and violation of COVID-19 restrictions.

Ukrainian Drone Attack On Airbase Deep Inside Russian Territory Kills 3 Soldiers

A fresh Ukrainian attack deep inside Russian territory has left three dead, Russian news agencies are reporting Monday, which further describe that an enemy drone was intercepted before debris came down on bystanders below.

The Ukrainian drone was inbound over a military base in southern Russia identified as Engels airbase in the Saratov region, which is located more than 600km from the Ukrainian border. "On December 26, at around 01:35 Moscow time, a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down at low altitude while approaching the Engels military airfield in the Saratov region," the Russian defense ministry said in a statement.

"As a result of the drone's wreckage falling, three Russian technicians who were at the airfield were fatally injured," the statement added, as quoted in TASS. The ministry said that no aircraft were damaged in the attack, with Saratov governor Roman Busargin telling local residents there is "absolutely no threat" at this time.

Given the drone attack from Ukraine set off some degree of panic, Busargin additionally warned the public that "All stories about the evacuation from the city are blatant lies, created far from the borders of our country."

The incident marks a rare moment in which three Russian military personnel were killed while at a base far away from the front lines of conflict in neighboring Ukraine. Engels is also known to host advanced hypersonic and nuclear-capable bombers.

Currently there's speculation that the drone may have directly impacted the base, and that Russian authorities are advancing the narrative that it was intercepted by anti-air defenses in order to deny the Ukrainians a 'successful' military operation, and for Kremlin leadership to save face. Related to the speculation and rumors, the Saratov governor had additionally warned against residents spreading "fake information."

Human smuggling suspects arrested after at least 21 illegal immigrants, including pregnant woman and 3-year-old girl, discovered naked and starving in Fort Worth home: Report

At least 21 illegal immigrants are safe and two suspects in custody after the FBI conducted a raid on a Fort Worth, Texas, home shortly before Christmas. The agency believed that the home was used as a stopping point in a human trafficking scheme.

On the evening of December 21, FBI agents raided the home in the 1800 block of Miller Avenue in the southeastern part of the city. There, they discovered anywhere from 21 to 27 illegal immigrants from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador who had been "held hostage" in horrific conditions.

The group of illegal immigrants — including a pregnant woman and a 3-year-old girl — were all "stripped naked, unfed, cold, and scared, and held hostage," said a statement from Domingo Garcia, the national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Hilda Duarte, also of LULAC, explained that "their clothes were taken from them ... to keep them from escaping and leaving the home."

And remain in the home they did. According to reports, the group had been at the home at least two days without food. Conditions had gotten so bad that the 3-year-old girl, who was still breastfeeding, no longer had nourishment because her mother's body had stopped producing milk.

In total, between seven and 10 females, including the little girl, were rescued in the raid, which means that most of the victims were male. While none of the ages of the victims, except for the little girl, have been released, there have been no reports of male minors among them. The group has been given food, clothing, and medical care. LULAC has also paid for hotel rooms to keep the victims out of the cold.

Career criminal shot man at least 7 times while out on bail from celeb-endorsed bail fund: Lawsuit

A pet project backed by some of the most liberal celebrities in Hollywood nearly cost a Las Vegas man his life, a new lawsuit claims.

The lawsuit stems from a horrific shooting a year ago. On December 20, 2021, Rashawn Gaston-Anderson, 24, walked into the ShangHai Taste, just a few miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, and opened fire. Chengyan Wang, a waiter at the establishment, was alone at the time and sustained anywhere from seven to 11 gunshot wounds. Gaston-Anderson eventually pled guilty to attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and mayhem with the use of a deadly weapon in connection to the shooting and has been sentenced to serve seven to 18 years in prison.

Despite life-threatening injuries, Wang managed to survive the shooting and has now filed a lawsuit against several defendants, including the nonprofit organization that allowed Gaston-Anderson to be out on the streets that day in the first place. The Bail Project, based in California, is a "national" organization that provides bail assistance to thousands of accused persons across the country in an attempt to "restore the presumption of innocence, reunite families, and challenge a system that criminalizes race and poverty," its website claims. A Las Vegas office for the Bail Project, which opened in February 2021, posted $3,000 for Gaston-Anderson just six days before he shot Wang.

Sam Bankman-Fried Had Deep Ties To Current, Former Regulators, Emails Show

Disgraced former crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried developed deep ties with regulators he wanted to oversee the crypto industry, emails reportedly show.

Bankman-Fried hired multiple former regulators at the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to staff his legal team at FTX, his Bahamas-based crypto exchange. They helped him develop relationships with top CFTC officials and other regulators, according to the LA Times.

FTX general counsel Ryne Miller, former legal counsel to then-CFTC Commissioner and current SEC Commissioner Gary Gensler, arranged a meeting between Bankman-Fried and SEC general counsel Dan Berkovitz, LA Times reported. Berkovitz announced his resignation from the SEC Dec. 22, the same day the LA Times asked questions about his role.

Months earlier, former FTX head of policy and regulatory director Mark Wetjen arranged a meeting with CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam and his chief of staff to discuss FTX affiliate LedgerX, LA Times found.

Behnam testified to the Senate Agriculture Committee Dec.1 he met with Bankman-Fried and his team 10 times about LedgerX, in response to a question from GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa 90 minutes into the hearing.

Bankman-Fried was a proponent of the Digital Commodities Consumer Protection Act (DCCPA), a bipartisan bill to give the CFTC more oversight over the crypto industry. FTX lobbied for the bill more than any other legislation in 2022, according to campaign finance watchdog OpenSecrets.

Bankman-Fried testified to the Senate Agriculture Committee Feb. 9 about his “vision for the CFTC as a digital-assets market regulator for the U.S,” in a hearing about digital assets.

Campaign finance records show Bankman-Fried donated to Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, DCCPA author and Agriculture Committee Chair. He also donated to GOP Sen. John Boozman of Arkansas, Agriculture Committee Ranking Member and co-sponsor of the bill, records show.

During this period, he covered major events like the summit between former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, and the meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

Tejera became an executive producer of “The Week” in February 2020, with the program climbing to the number one spot in Sunday shows among adults aged 25 to 54 under his leadership.

Prior to joining ABC, Tejera had worked with MSNBC, NBC, and HBO. He is survived by his wife Veronica and two young daughters, Ella aged 5 months, and Sofia aged 2 years.

China's military sent 71 planes and seven ships toward Taiwan in a 24-hour display of force directed at the island, Taiwan's defense ministry said Monday, after China expressed anger at Taiwan-related provisions in a U.S. annual defense spending bill passed on Saturday.

China's military harassment of self-ruled Taiwan, which it claims is its own territory, has intensified in recent years, and the Communist Party's People's Liberation Army has sent planes or ships toward the island on a near-daily basis.

Between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, 47 of the Chinese planes crossed the median of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial boundary once tacitly accepted by both sides, according to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense.
