Russia cuts key interest rate to 14%, says inflation could hit 23% this year

*In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing unprecedented Western sanctions, the central bank is juggling a sharply shrinking economy and skyrocketing inflation

*Russian inflation reached 16.7% in March and the bank said on Friday that it expects annual inflation of between 18% and 23% this year.

The Central Bank of Russia has cut its key interest rate to 14% from 17% as it looks to mitigate the impact of international economic sanctions.

In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing unprecedented Western sanctions, the central bank is juggling a sharply shrinking economy and skyrocketing inflation. Economists expect a double-digit contraction for the economy, and inflation in excess of 20% in 2022.

Russian inflation reached 17.6% as of April 22 and the central bank said on Friday that it expects annual inflation of between 18% and 23% this year, before slowing to between 5% and 7% in 2023 and returning to its 4% target in 2024.

The central bank implemented an emergency hike of the key rate from 9.5% to 20% in February, days after the invasion of Ukraine, in a bid to support its plunging ruble currency.

However, with the ruble now returning to pre-war levels, policymakers are turning their attention to recalibrating the economy in an effort to absorb the impact of punitive sanctions from international powers. The bank said its inflation outlook is set to be impacted by the future of its imports and exports, as it looks to navigate the stinging sanctions, along with future fiscal policy decisions.

It added that it will “take into the account the need for a structural transformation of the economy and will ensure a return of inflation to target in 2024.”

The CBR estimates that economic activity began to decline in March, as sanctions began to take effect, with high-frequency data indicating a slide in consumer and business activity.

Disney plans to keep quiet about politics after publicly sparring with Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis over legislation related to LGBT content in education, according to The Wall Street Journal.

DeSantis signed a law eliminating Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District Friday, ending special administrative and tax privileges the company had enjoyed since 1967 after the company came out against Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill. Disney’s political allies in the Florida legislature said the company’s best bet at finding a resolution with DeSantis now is to stay out of politics, according to the WSJ.

“This was shock and awe from the governor,” Republican Florida state Sen. Jeff Brandes, who voted against the Disney bill told the WSJ. “It just shows how big a challenge Disney faced in saying anything at all in the legislative process.”

Republican lawmakers reportedly told Adam Babington, Disney’s top government affairs official in Florida, that the company may be able to salvage their special district if they stepped out of the public fight, according to the WSJ.

“Cool it off. Let’s not make a big deal about this,” said Babington, according to the WSJ.

“Waging culture wars against common-sense legislation – on parental rights and child safeguarding – is bad for business, particularly for a company that has built a successful brand over the decades by marketing wholesome entertainment to families,” DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Grand Illusion this week presents a documentary that sounds tailor-made for Harry Potter fans.

“The Wizard Rockumentary: A Movie About Rocking and Rowling,”

directed by 22-year-old Spokane filmmakers Mallory and Megan Schuyler, explores the world of wizard rock:

bands whose music celebrates the Harry Potter universe.

The Schuylers describe the film on their Web site (www.wizardrockumentary.com) as a showcase of the extent to

which J.K. Rowling’s work has inspired creativity in her readers, an examination of the online fan community built

around wizard rock, and an exploration of the effect that Harry Potter has had on a generation.

By the way, according to the Web site, Mallory’s in Gryffindor and Megan’s in Ravenclaw.

Many wizard rock bands actively promote literacy among young people, and in keeping with that philosophy,

10 percent of ticket sales will be donated to the nonprofit literacy organization Page Ahead.

The filmmakers will host Q&As at today’s 9 p.m. screening and Saturday’s 3 and 5 p.m. screenings.

The band Hogwarts Trainwreck will play between screenings tonight;

Colin and the Creeveys and the Fizzing Whizbees will play before the 3 p.m. Saturday show and

Hogwarts Trainwreck will return to play before the 5 p.m. Saturday show.

So, what’s going on here? While I’m certain that there is at least a small amount of legitimate hedging and arbitrage, the majority of this TAS/spread volume is placed withnefarious and manipulative intent.One other note of interest. Since these are spreads and thus “fully hedged” in the eyes of the CFTC, these positions can be as large as possible without drawing any regulatory scrutiny.

And so, what happens next as the calendar inevitably moves toward option expiration and contract delivery? These spread trades are often “legged out” for maximum price control and impact. What does that mean?

To “leg out” means that you take just one side of the spread off at a time. In this case, a trader with that aforementioned “nefarious intent” will dump/liquidate his May longs while maintaining his July short. This has the impact ofimmediately driving the price lower and affords the trader the luxury of covering the short side at a lower price.

Vladimir Putin is threatening to use nukes again. If Russia ultimately decides to conduct a surprise first strike, are you living near a location that is likely to get nuked? Though Putin did not mention nuclear weapons directly, he was almost certainly referring to Russia’s new Sarmat 2 nuclear missile which was tested for the first time just days ago and that he boasted is unlike any other weapon in the world.

Obviously, that threat was directed at the United States, because we are intervening in the war in Ukraine more than anyone else.

As I have stated before, there are no winners in a nuclear war, but whichever side decides to strike first will have the best chance of surviving a nuclear war.

If the Russians ultimately determine that a direct military conflict with the United States is inevitable, they may decide that it is best to hit us before we can hit them.

When that day arrives, you will want to be as far away from prime strategic targets as you possibly can.

At the top of that list would be all of the military facilities where our nuclear weapons are located…

Secondly, you will want to be far away from any U.S. military bases, because they will be prime targets as well.

For those who don’t know the name Nikolai Patrushev, Patrushev is one of the Russia’s most powerful security / intelligence officers and a close ally of Putin. After serving between 1999 and 2008 as Director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) (the successor organization to the KGB), Patrushev moved to being Secretary of the Russian Security Council since 2008. In fact, Patrushev took over as Director of the FSB in 1999 from the previous incumbent, Vladimir Putin.

The Security Council of the Russian Federation is chaired by Putin, with Patrushev as Secretary, overseeing the Security Council and answering directly to Putin. The deputy chairman of the Security Council is Medvedev Dmitry, the former Russian president and prime minister. Among the other member of the Security Council are current Russian prime minister Mikhail Mishustin, and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov.

So when Nikolai Patrushev says that Russia is working on a plan to back the ruble with gold and commodities, it is not just anyone saying this, it is being said by the highest echelons of the Russian Government.

Parents Fight Back Against Obscene Books in Madison County Schools

Parents in Madison County, Mississippi are fighting back after finding libraries full of sexually graphic books in their local public schools. After the school board slow-walked any response to parental complaints, parents packed their April meeting and a mother read aloud from the obscene books peddled to kids in Madison County Schools. Unable to ignore the heat, the board then placed the books under review and restricted check-out access, saying they plan to readdress the issue at their May 9th meeting. In the meantime, the ACLU is gearing up to oppose the parents.

Parents have united under the banner of “Madison County 4 Freedom” to take on an active role in the education of their children and the policymaking decisions that affect them, attending school board meetings and appealing to elected officials to fight for their kids.

After becoming familiar with books found in Madison County school libraries in October of last year, the group began appealing to the board as early as December 2021, but say they were met with stonewalling from district officials despite providing them with physical copies of the sexually-charged material and even a copy of the Supreme Court’s Miller Test for obscenity.

After months of inaction, the board finally announced in March that they’d be reviewing the books, but said they’d remain in circulation and available for kids to check out. That all changed this month, when Madison County 4 Freedom mom Lindsey Beckham read aloud from the “Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” at April’s school board meeting, treating them to the type of sexually explicit content offered in their middle school libraries and airing the material out for all to digest.

Featuring passages about masturbation and having sex with trees, the book has been called into question in other districts as well and was even removed from middle school reading lists in deep-blue New York City way back in 2013.

“Yep, that’s right, I admit that I masturbate. I’m proud of it. I’m good at it. I’m ambidextrous. If there were a Professional Masturbators League, I’d get drafted number one and make millions of dollars,” reads a portion of the book that Ms. Beckham presented to board members. “And maybe you’re thinking, ‘Well, you really shouldn’t be talking about masturbation in public.’ Well, tough, I’m going to talk about it because EVERY-BODY does it. And EVERYBODY likes it. And if God hadn’t wanted us to masturbate, then God wouldn’t have given us thumbs. So I thank God for my thumbs,” the book, which also offers up CRT-style views on race, continues.

White House communications director Kate Bedingfield, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, on Friday announced she tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus, noting she last saw President Joe Biden 48-hours earlier while taking precautions, such as wearing an N-95 mask and social distancing.

“This morning, I tested positive for COVID-19. The news comes just ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD), which has raised concerns for some officials. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden’s chief medical adviser, will not attend the event, citing his own personal risk of contracting the virus.

While Biden will attend, he will skip the dinner portion and likely wear a mask when he is not speaking, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

“He has made the decision he wants to attend, in a safe way, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to show his support — showcase his support for the free press, for the work of all of you, for the work of your colleagues around the world to not only share accurate information about COVID but also report on the war in Ukraine and all of the work that happens every single day,” Psaki told reporters during Wednesday’s press conference:

I would expect that he may wear a mask when he’s not speaking. I’ll wear a mask when I’m at the dinner, in all likelihood. Bedingfield is the latest to contract the virus this month after a string of high profile figures did as well, including 82-year-old House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Conservative MP Accused of Watching Porn in Parliament Chamber Named as Neil Parish

A Member of Parliament accused of watching pornography inside the Westminster Parliament Commons’ chamber has been named, ending days of speculation on the matter after claims emerged earlier this week.

Neil Parish, who represents the rural Tiverton and Honiton constituency and is himself a farmer, has been kicked out of the Conservative party after being named as the Member of Parliament accused of watching pornography during a House of Commons debate.

Parish has, in the parlance of Parliament, had the ‘whip suspended’, meaning he has been temporarily suspended from the governing Conservative’s parliamentary grouping. Depending on the outcome of an investigation he could be re-instated at a later date, decide to continue sitting as an independent member of parliament, or resign his seat. In some circumstances, the Parliamentary standards commissioner could expel Parish from Parliament, or his constituents could trigger a recall petition.

A spokesman for the Government’s chief whip Chris Heaton-Harris — the office responsible for discipline among party members in Parliament — said, per a report from The Daily Telegraph: “Having spoken to the Chief Whip this afternoon, Neil Parish MP is reporting himself to the Standards Committee of the House of Commons. Mr Parish has been suspended from the Conservative whip pending the outcome of that investigation.”

Earlier this week, it was reported two female Members of Parliament had reported a man for watching pornography in the Commons debating chamber. Opposition parties have called on Parish to resign since his name was revealed and have accused the government of attempting to cover up his identity. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said the act was “obviously unacceptable” earlier this week.

When it comes to January 6, there are no coincidences.

A dirty little secret about January 6—one of many—is that Democrats and establishment Republicans, not Trump supporters, wanted to shut down the official proceedings of that day.

Just as the first wave of protesters breached the building shortly after 2 p.m., congressional Republicans were poised to present evidence of rampant voting fraud in the 2020 presidential election. Ten incumbent and four newly-elected Republican senators planned to work with their House colleagues to demand the formation of an audit commission to investigate election “irregularities” in the 2020 election. Absent an audit, the group of senators, including Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) pledged to reject the Electoral College results from the disputed states.

The Hail Mary effort was doomed to fail; yet the American people would have heard hours of debate related to provable election fraud over the course of the day.

And no one opposed the effort more than ex-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

During a conference call on December 31, 2020, McConnell urged his Republican Senate colleagues to abandon plans to object to the certification, insisting his vote to certify the 2020 election results would be “the most consequential I have ever cast” in his 36-year Senate career.

From the Senate floor on the afternoon of January 6, McConnell gave a dramatic speech warning of the dire consequences to the country should Republicans succeed in delaying the vote. He downplayed examples of voting fraud and even mocked the fact that Trump-appointed judges rejected election lawsuits.

“The voters, the courts, and the States have all spoken,” McConnell insisted. “If we overrule them, it would damage our Republic forever. If this election were overturned by mere allegations from the losing side, our democracy would enter a death spiral.”

Roughly six hours later, McConnell got his way. Cowed by the crowd of largely peaceful Americans allowed into the building by Capitol police, most Republican senators backed off the audit proposal. McConnell, echoing hyperbolic talking points about an “insurrection” seeded earlier in the day by Democratic lawmakers and the news media, gloated. “They tried to disrupt our democracy,” hhe declared n the Senate floor after Congress reconvened around 8 p.m. “This failed attempt to obstruct Congress, this failed insurrection, only underscores how crucial the task before us is for our Republic.”

Congress officially certified the Electoral College results early the next day.

Trudeau Government Cites ‘Confidentiality’ to Avoid Explaining Its Use of Rare Act to Quash Freedom Convoy

The federal government claims that allowing lawyers to view secret documents would “entirely undermine the principle of cabinet confidentiality.”

Citing “cabinet confidentiality,” the government of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is refusing to disclose why it used the Emergencies Act (EA) to crush the trucker Freedom Convoy in response to a rash of legal challenges against its use.

Currently, four legal organizations are challenging the Trudeau government. The EA was enacted on February 14 to shut down the Freedom Convoy, which took to the streets of Ottawa for three weeks demanding an end to all COVID mandates.

According to a recent report in the Globe and Mail, court documents show that the “confidentiality” of what goes on in Trudeau’s cabinet is being used as the reason the government will not divulge details of why it used the EA.

Canada’s Evidence Act says that when a government wants to use “cabinet confidentiality,” federal courts will refuse to look at evidence relating to any cases.

Trudeau revoked the EA on February 23 after protesters had been cleared out.

As reported by the Globe and Mail, the Trudeau government will look to argue that because the EA has now been rescinded, the case is now more or less over.

According to a legal document, the Trudeau federal government claims that allowing lawyers to view secret documents would “entirely undermine the principle of cabinet confidentiality.”

Legal groups that have launched their own challenges against the use of the EA by the Trudeau government include the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), whose federal court filing is still pending, and Canadian Frontline Nurses.

The Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF) has also taken the Trudeau government to court for its use of the EA.

The provincial government of the province of Alberta is looking at joining the legal cases as an intervenor.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) is also suing the federal government for its abuse of the EA.

Civil liberties groups, including the CCLA, have called for an independent public inquiry into Trudeau’s use of the EA.

On Monday, Trudeau appointed a Liberal Party-friendly judge to oversee his government’s invocation of the EA.

Trudeau’s government was legally bound to announce an inquiry into the use of the EA within 60 days of it being revoked.

Report of active shooter at JBLM was ‘miscommunication’ during training exercise

A report of an active shooter Thursday morning at Joint Base Lewis-McChord was actually a “miscommunication” during a training exercise for active shooter situations, according to a base spokesperson.

Military police responded about 10 a.m. for a report of an active shooter near Lewis North, an area of the base northwest of Interstate 5 near American Lake. Police went to that area and found no evidence of an active shooter.

Base spokesperson Gary Dangerfield said someone had overhead “active shooter, active shooter,” while a unit was conducting training and called 911.

“Our military police were responding to a call and doing what they needed to do to secure the area and keep us all safe,” Dangerfield said.

Dangerfield apologized for the false alarm. JBLM was not put on an official lockdown, but the report caused some at the base to take cover.

Bruce Wong, 69, said his younger sister, who works as a special education teacher at JBLM, texted him at about 10:30 a.m., telling him she’d heard the whole base was locked down and that she was hiding under her desk.

“I started texting my family to make sure that they knew,” Wong said. “We had a whole set of text messages between our brothers and her: ‘stay under the desk, grab something just in case, barricade the door.'”

President Joe Biden's pick to represent the United States on a council that promotes free trade in Asia has a long history of cozying up to the Chinese Communist Party. He's also a top Biden donor.

Biden tapped Dominic Ng, the chairman of East West Bank, to represent the United States on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s Business Advisory Council, a group of business leaders that advises governments on issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Ng, who has led the East West Bank since 1992, contributed $100,000 to the Biden Victory Fund and $35,500 to the Democratic National Committee in October 2020, according to campaign finance disclosures.

Ng’s appointment means the United States will be represented by a consistent defender of some of Beijing’s most controversial policies. The role could also provide a boost for Ng’s bank, which lends heavily to businesses in Asia. Ng has endorsed China’s infrastructure program, the Belt and Road Initiative, and criticized the United States for refusing to join the program. He has sided with Beijing on other hot-button issues such as the origins of the coronavirus. Ng also criticized two Biden-backed bills to make the United States more competitive with China.

Ng is the latest Biden ally to land a prestigious administration appointment. Biden tapped his longtime friend, Chris Dodd, to serve as special envoy for the Summit of the Americas, a triennial meeting of government and business leaders from the Western hemisphere. Dodd signed an ethics agreement for the position, the Washington Free Beacon reported, because his lobbying firm represents several countries taking part in the summit. Biden also appointed his friend and campaign supporter Joe Kiani to serve on the Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Kiani has given $1 million to Biden’s family charity and bundled $1 million in donations for Biden’s campaign.

Ng served as chairman of the Committee of 100, a group of Chinese-American business and government leaders that one Hong Kong columnist has called "a pro-Beijing group, concerned almost exclusively with the interests aligned with those of the Chinese Communist Party."

Chinese president Xi Jinping praised the committee as one of the "friendly groups" that has championed positive U.S.-China relations. As chairman of the committee, Ng hosted Xi during a 2012 visit to Washington, D.C. The banker said Xi was "easy-going" and "attentive to his suggestions" to encourage Chinese businesses to invest in the United States.

The Committee of 100 has vehemently denied allegations that it is linked to the Chinese Communist Party. But officials inside CCP-controlled influence groups have worked closely with the Committee of 100. Ng gave a keynote speech at the committee’s 2019 gala, which was attended by the vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, a group the State Department cut ties with over its links to the Chinese Communist Party.

The Committee of 100 is also linked to the China-United States Exchange Foundation, a Hong Kong-based think tank suspected of working as a front group for the Chinese Communist Party. Tung Chee-hwa, the founder of the foundation, has been described as a "supporter" of the Committee of 100. Ronnie Chan, who serves on the governing board of the foundation, is also a member of the Committee of 100.

Ng has also served on the board of directors for the Asia Society, a U.S.-based nonprofit that receives funding from several Chinese state-owned companies. Asia Society has partnered with China’s Confucius Institutes, which allegedly promote pro-Beijing propaganda at American colleges and high schools.

Ng has espoused views on U.S.-China relations that seemingly put him in closer agreement with Beijing than with Biden.

For the uninitiated, Sussmann a former Perkins Coie partner, and former attorney for the DNC/Clinton Campaign (and Rodney Joffe), has been charged by Special Counsel John Durham with providing false statements to then-FBI General Counsel James Baker in the fall of 2016. Here is more background on his indictment.

The Special Counsel’s “ongoing investigation” into Rodney Joffe. The Special Counseltold the court that while Joffe and Sussmann pushed the Alfa Bank/Yotaphone hoax to the CIA in February 2017, this false information was also pushed “to another branch of government, to the legislative branch” at a later time. According to the Special Counsel:

The Special Counsel’s statement reminds us of this letter we discussed from Rodney Joffe’s attorney to the attorneys for Michael Sussmann, stating the Yota phone-related allegations percolated “through various branches of the government and around the private sector after that date, in various forms.”

Rodney Joffe’s exposure and 18 U.S.C. 1031. The Special Counsel was understandably hesitant to get too deep into what they have on Rodney Joffe. However, when Sussmann’s attorneys brought up the fact that Joffe couldn’t be charged due to the 5-year statute of limitations, the Special Counsel responded that “certain statutes of limitations are longer than five years.”

The court asked for an example, and the Special Counsel referenced 18 U.S.C. 1031, “which involves defrauding the government in connection with procurement and contract matters.” This has to do with the Georgia Tech/DARPA contract. In the Special Counsel’s own words:

Laura Seago from Fusion GPS will (likely) testify at trial. We previously reported that Seago was identified as the “tech maven” the government expected to call at trial. At this hearing was the first time we saw Seago’s name explicitly mentioned as the Fusion GPS witness.

Christopher Steele will not be a witness. Sussmann’s lawyer informed the court that the Special Counsel stated on April 26 that Steele is “out of the country and isn’t likely to be a witness.”

In fact, Steele is not cooperating with the Special Counsel.

Finally, this statement from the Special Counsel relating to how “the VIPs, meaning Perkins Coie and the [Clinton] campaign” wanted the “Internet data” to be pulled for purposes of digging up information to damage Trump.

A biodistribution study of the Pfizer Covid-19 injection suggests a suspension of the use of mRNA ‘Vaccines’ is urgently required and blood donor organisations need to take a long hard look at their policies surrounding the acceptance of donations of blood from people who have received an mRNA based Covid-19 injection.

Do you remember when public health and government officials assured everyone that the mRNA ‘vaccines’ function like traditional vaccine technologies? …meaning that they largely remain in the shoulder muscle where they are injected, with some portion going to the draining lymph nodes where an immune response is initiated.

Well, back in May 2021, I, along with some international colleagues, looked at a document that Pfizer had submitted to the Japanese health regulatory agency. It was a pre-clinical biodistribution study. This means it was an experiment done with an animal model to predict where the vaccine formulation might go when injected into people.

What I saw was startling.

Most of Pfizer’s vaccine spread throughout the body instead of staying at the injection site. This also meant there was the potential for toxicities that would never occur with traditional vaccines that largely remain at or close to the injection site. To ensure people could make a fully informed decision about whether to take the jab I went public with this information in a radio interview.

I wasn’t surprised by the systemic distribution of the vaccine per se. Being a vaccinologist, I knew that lipid nanoparticle delivery systems were originally designed to spread far and wide throughout the body with the hopes they could be a vehicle for gene therapy and/or drug delivery.

Instead, my surprise came from the fact that the data confirmed my historical understanding and contradicted public health messaging that the mRNA jabs behaved like traditional vaccines. Public statements by health officials made me assume the lipid nanoparticles had somehow been modified to stay at the injection site, which was news to me. This highlights one of the first rules of thumb when practicing science.

Transparently presented raw and/or peer-reviewed data are the cornerstones of objective science; not personal proclamations or data disseminated via media releases. In May 2021 I realized two things: 1. There was a lack of transparency about data supporting COVID-19 inoculations. 2. Incorrect messaging was being relayed to the public. As an academic public servant with relevant expertise, I spoke up when enquiries came from the public. I spoke the truth then and continue to do so.

As a result of this, a public campaign to impersonate and discredit me was mounted; it has not stopped and has likely caused irreparable harm to my career. Nobody involved in these personal attacks has ever been willing to talk to me about the scientific basis for my concerns. It is unfair to discredit a scientist based on a short interview for a lay audience in which only a tiny fraction of the messaging could be relayed.

My challenge to detractors then remains the same now: if you want to prove that I don’t know what I am talking about, then debate me in a moderated public forum. I contend that a real-time back-and-forth discussion of the science will show that I know exactly what I am talking about; I’m not sure the same would hold true for most of those participating in the smear campaign against me.

Has Twitter Been Cooking Their Books?

Has anyone else been suspicious of Twitter’s flip-flop on selling the platform to Elon Musk? I’m sure I’m not the only one. I always felt that Twitter was far less valuable than what Musk was offering and was particularly surprised when a Twitter board member, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, who is also one of Twitter’s largest shareholders, said that he’d reject Musk’s offer because it was too low.

“I don’t believe that the proposed offer by @elonmusk ($54.20) comes close to the intrinsic value of @Twitter given its growth prospects,” the prince tweeted earlier this month.

This claim never sat right with me. But adding to my suspicion was the sudden flip-flopping of the board to accept Musk’s offer after initially taking steps to prevent his hostile takeover.

So, why did they do it? Money, obviously. But why take an offer that Alwaleed bin Talal, who describes himself as “one of the largest & long-term shareholders of Twitter,” originally dismissed as too low?

To me, the answer is that the board knows that Twitter isn’t worth what Musk is willing to pay for it, and it looks like there might be evidence to back that up.

According to Twitter’s latest financial report, not only did the company not meet revenue expectations, but they also admitted that since 2019, the company has been “over-stating” how many users are on the platform.

“In March of 2019, we launched a feature that allowed people to link multiple separate accounts together in order to conveniently switch between accounts,” Twitter explains. “An error was made at that time, such that actions taken via the primary account resulted in all linked accounts being counted as [monetizable daily active Twitter users] mDAU.”

“This resulted in an overstatement of mDAU from Q1’19 through Q4’21.”

Based on their revised figures, Twitter now admits to having 1.9 million fewer global users in Q4 2021.

Mallinckrodt Agrees to Pay $260M to Settle False Claims Act Lawsuit

Alleging Payment of Illegal Kickbacks and Medicare Drug Rebate Underpayments

– United States Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams announced that pharmaceutical company Mallinckrodt ARD LLC

(previously Questcor Pharmaceuticals, Inc., “Questcor,” and collectively “Mallinckrodt”),

has agreed to pay $260 million as part of a global settlement to resolve separate allegations that Mallinckrodt violated

the False Claims Act by knowingly:

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted that he does not know the status of 42 individuals apprehended at the southwest border who were flagged for being on the federal government’s terror watch or no-fly lists.

House Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio raised the issue when Mayorkas appeared before the committee on Thursday.

“Have any of the 42 illegal migrants on the terrorist watch list or no-fly list encountered on our southwest border been released into the United States?” Jordan asked.

“I will provide that data to you with respect to the disposition of each one. I do not know the answer to your question,” Mayorkas responded.

“The secretary of Homeland Security does not know the answer to the status of 42 individuals who came to our southern border illegally [who] are on the no-fly list and the terrorist watch list,” Jordan said.

“You do not know whether they have been released or not into the country. That’s your testimony?”

Mayorkas reiterated that he would get the data to the congressman.

“That’s amazing,” Jordan replied.

During his opening remarks, the lawmaker argued that the current border crisis involving the greatest influx of illegal immigrants on record is “intentional.”

“It has to be,” Jordan said. “The chaos on our southern border is not an accident. It’s deliberate. It’s on purpose. It’s by design.

“President Biden on Day 1 said there’d be a moratorium on deportations,” Jordan continued. “He ended ‘Remain in Mexico,’ he terminated agreements with Northern Triangle countries and he stopped building the wall.”

‘They Want To Stifle Dissent’: DeSantis Declares War Against Biden’s ‘Ministry Of Truth’ At DHS

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed to fight the Biden administration’s proposed Disinformation Governance Board Friday, which he said was an attempt to censor ordinary people and impose narrative control.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the formation of the board Wednesday, which will be run by Nina Jankowicz, a self-described “disinformation expert” who previously attempted to discredit the Hunter Biden laptop story. DeSantis promised to fight the board in a Friday press conference.

“You cannot have a Ministry of Truth in this country. And so let’s get real here,” DeSantis said. “We’re not gonna let Biden get away with this one, so we will be fighting back.”

Critics including DeSantis have compared the board to the “Ministry of Truth” in the novel “1984,” an agency that produces government propaganda and decides what citizens are allowed to say and believe.

“They now have an idea – and I honestly thought this was a belated April Fool’s joke – but they are actually going to create in the Department of Homeland Security a Bureau of Disinformation. It’s basically a Ministry of Truth,” DeSantis said. “And what they want to do is, they want to be able to put out false narratives without people being able to speak out and fight back.”

“They want to be able to say things like ‘Russia collusion’ and perpetuate hoaxes and then have people like us be silenced. They want to be able to advocate for COVID lockdowns, they want to be able to advocate for school closures, things that are not supported by the evidence. But then when you speak out, they want to stifle dissent,” he added. “And so we reject this bureau in the state of Florida.”

The board announced Wednesday that it would begin by focusing on Russian disinformation in the lead-up to midterm elections and misinformation aimed at migrants at the southern border, according to the Associated Press.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said it sounded “like the objective of the board is to prevent disinformation and misinformation from traveling around the country” during a Thursday press conference, but declined to comment on Kankowicz’ appointment, claiming she had no information about her.

Fully Vaccinated and Boosted White House Comms Director Kate Bedingfield Tests Positive for Coronavirus

White House communications director Kate Bedingfield, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, on Friday announced she tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus, noting she last saw President Joe Biden 48-hours earlier while taking precautions, such as wearing an N-95 mask and social distancing.

“This morning, I tested positive for COVID-19. I last saw the President Wednesday in a socially-distanced meeting while wearing an N-95 mask, and he is not considered a close contact as defined by the CDC,” Bedingfield wrote on Friday, crediting her “mild” symptoms to being both vaccinated and boosted.

“Thanks to being fully vaccinated and boosted, I am only experiencing mild symptoms. In alignment with White House COVID-19 protocols, I will work from home and plan to return to work in person at the conclusion of a five-day isolation period and a negative test,” she added:

The news comes just ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD), which has raised concerns for some officials. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden’s chief medical adviser, will not attend the event, citing his own personal risk of contracting the virus.

While Biden will attend, he will skip the dinner portion and likely wear a mask when he is not speaking, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

“He has made the decision he wants to attend, in a safe way, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to show his support — showcase his support for the free press, for the work of all of you, for the work of your colleagues around the world to not only share accurate information about COVID but also report on the war in Ukraine and all of the work that happens every single day,” Psaki told reporters during Wednesday’s press conference:

I would expect that he may wear a mask when he’s not speaking. I’ll wear a mask when I’m at the dinner, in all likelihood. And we also took steps, including the fact that he’s not attending for the eating portion of the dinner and he’ll be there for the program, which includes a number of speakers, the presentation of scholarships, as you know, and, of course, his speaking and his roasting, where he will be “on the menu,” as he likes to say, when Trevor Noah is speaking.

Bedingfield is the latest to contract the virus this month after a string of high profile figures did as well, including 82-year-old House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Elon Musk Sells $4 Billion Tesla Shares After Agreeing to Purchase Twitter, Says ‘No More Sales Planned’

Elon Musk sold nearly $4 billion worth of Tesla shares this week, just days after the billionaire agreed to purchase Twitter for $44 billion, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to the filings, the CEO offloaded about 4.4 million shares of the electric vehicle company for about $3.9 billion, with the majority of the share sales taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sales prices ranged between about $872 and $999 per share. The filings don’t reveal the reason behind why Musk sold his shares.

In a post on Twitter shortly after the filings were published on Thursday, Musk said: “No further TSLA sales planned after today.”

Musks offloading of Tesla shares came after Twitter’s board of directors on Monday reached an agreement on the businessman’s $44 billion offer to acquire the social media platform and take it private.

The company accepted Musk’s proposal of $54.20 per share in cash after previously resisting the offer.

Musk, in a statement following the agreement, reiterated his previous comments regarding the need for Twitter to allow for freedom of speech while touting his vision for the future of the social media platform.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” he said.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spambots, and authenticating all humans.

“Twitter has tremendous potential—I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it,” Musk added.

However, the deal still needs to be approved by Twitter’s shareholders and regulators.

It will also require that Musk come up with some cash.

Incident involving vehicle happened shortly after 2 a.m. Friday, DND says

The Department of National Defence says an investigation is underway after four cadets died in an incident involving a vehicle at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont.

The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. Friday on Point Frederick, a peninsula at Canadian Forces Base Kingston that sits between Kingston Harbour and Navy Bay on the St. Lawrence River.

Investigators were seen Friday examining the road and shoreline in boats and on foot. Late Friday afternoon, the vehicle that carried the cadets was seen being pulled from the water by authorities.

Frontenac Paramedics said four patients were treated at the scene but none of them were taken to hospital.

The Royal Military College (RMC) is located on the peninsula, just east of downtown Kingston.
