Macron Offers to Be ‘Honest Broker’ in US-Iran Talks, But Pushes JCPOA Expansion Tehran Rejected
A US State Department spokesperson on Tuesday dispelled rumors that US President Joe Biden’s transition team has been engaged in backroom talks on the US returning to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying it was “a long way” from considering Iran’s proposal to revive the deal.
French President Emmanuel Macron has once again offered his help in patching up relations between Iran and the United States, suggesting he could be an “honest broker” in talks over returning to the 2015 nuclear deal. However, he also said he wants to expand the deal to include the strongly anti-Iranian countries of Israel and Saudi Arabia.
“I will do whatever I can to support any initiative from the US side to re-engage demanding dialogue and I will be here … to try to be an honest broker and a committed broker in this dialogue,” Macron said during an online forum at the Atlantic Council think tank on Thursday.
The French president said he believed Iran was “much closer to a nuclear bomb now than they were before” the JCPOA, and that “this is the right timing” to negotiate a wider deal that would include Iran’s formidable ballistic missile program as well as other regional partners.
“We have to find a way to involve in this discussion Saudi Arabia and Israel, because they are some of the key partners of the region directly interested by the outcomes with our other friends of the region,” Macron added. “It is impossible to fix the situation without being sure that all of these countries are comfortable with this new agenda.”
Iran's Position Made Clear
However, Tehran has already spoken out against either revising or expanding the 8-nation JCPOA.
“The JCPOA is a multilateral international agreement that has been endorsed and stabilized by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231. It is by no means renegotiable, and its parties are also definite and unchangeable,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said last week.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif noted last week that a mechanism for such an “honest broker” already exists in the JCPOA: EU High Representative Josep Borrell, who is the coordinator of the joint commission that monitors the deal.
Moreover, Macron’s proposed expansion of the deal follows the path previously laid out by the Biden administration, and he has previously said Iran must be the first to return to the confines of the deal, making it unlikely Tehran will believe Macron's claim to be an “honest broker.”
Iran, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China, and the European Union signed the agreement in July 2015, providing for the removal of economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for ending its nuclear weapons program and agreeing to strict limits on the quality and quantity of refined uranium it could produce. However, in 2018, then-US President Donald Trump claimed without evidence that Iran was violating the deal and unilaterally pulled the US out of it, reimposing damaging “maximum pressure” economic sanctions.

Damn I'm good. I remember stuff from 30 years ago better than yesterday sometimes.
Of course, we never really "stood-down", and they won't either. I mean, they made us take like a half a day of training so we would be behind on our office-work, I guess, and maybe a couple other hour presentations, but other duties were not interfered with beyond annoyance.

WASHINGTON – One day last fall, the Navy's top admiral read a report of a drunken petty officer who had groped a female sailor on a commercial flight while other sailors looked on and did nothing.
The next day, the admiral, Jeremy M. Boorda, ordered all 430,000 men and women under his command to take time off to ponder ways to aid order and discipline.
For a Navy increasingly sensitive to sexual harassment, 1995 has been another trying year.
This year's stand-down was the second time in three years that the Navy has ordered such self-analysis. The first came after the 1991 Tailhook convention, at which dozens of women were sexually assaulted or harassed by Navy aviators.
The focus on harassment has encouraged an explosion of complaints.
This year, two admirals have been forced to retire after sex-related indiscretions, and the head of the Navy equal opportunity office faced sex harassment charges, of which he was cleared but which left his future promotion in question.
The Navy points to figures that suggest, paradoxically, that harassment is actually declining as the service cracks down on violators and makes it easier for victims to file complaints.

Trafficking and exploitation of children seems to be going on under our very noses. I learned that medical experiments can be conducted on minor children without their parents consent if the child has been removed from the parents' custody. This is how I think children get enrolled in drug trials.

Billionaire residents complain about living in luxury New York high-rise 432 Park
Billionaire residents of one of the world’s most expensive multimillion-dollar luxury towers are complaining of major construction failures.
Living at 432 Park Avenue in New York – one of the wealthiest addresses in one of the tallest residential buildings in the world – should be the epitome of luxury.
But residents who have paid up to $US88 million ($115 million) for an apartment in the building are up in arms complaining about major construction failures and huge out-of-pocket expenses.
The Manhattan high-rise on the famously named Billionaire’s Row, which was briefly the tallest residential building in the world when it was constructed in 2015, attracted some of the wealthiest people in the world to live in the exclusive building.
Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez were one couple who bought a 1200sq m apartment in the luxury high-rise for $US15.3 million ($20 million) in 2018, but sold it just a year later.
The 96th floor penthouse at the top of the building sold in 2016 for nearly $US88 million ($A115 million) to a company representing the Saudi retail magnate Fawaz Alhokair.
The tower which shoots up to more than 420m high is riddled with significant design and engineering flaws that’s costing millions in repairs and insurance costs.
Residents are complaining about major leaks, significant water damage, mechanical problems with the lifts and unusually loud creaking, banging and clicking noises in their apartments.
There have been a number of floods in the building, with two major leaks recorded in November 2018.
The owners also complained about the garbage chute “that sounds like a bomb” when rubbish is tossed, according to notes from a 2019 owners’ meeting.
“I was convinced it would be the best building in New York,” Sarina Abramovich, one of the earliest residents of 432 Park, told The New York Times. “They’re still billing it as God’s gift to the world, and it’s not.”
In 2016, she and her husband bought a $US17 million ($A22 million) apartment that spans more than 1000sq m so the retired couple could have a second home close to their children.
She said they were disappointed with their purchase from day one. “Everybody hates each other here,” Ms Abramovich said.
“They put me in a freight elevator surrounded by steel plates and plywood, with a hard-hat operator,” she said. “That’s how I went up to my hoity-toity apartment before closing.”
The uber-wealthy who have forked out millions of dollars for a piece of the exclusive real estate in the building – which cost $US3.1 billion ($A4 million) to construct – are now at odds with the developers.
The construction manager, Lendlease, made a statement that they “have been in contact” with the developers “regarding some comments from tenants, which we are currently evaluating”.
One of the building’s developers, CIM Group, said in a statement that the building “is a successfully designed, constructed and virtually sold-out project”, adding that they are “working collaboratively” with the condo board. There have been no comments from the other developer, Macklowe Properties.
On top of the construction problems, residents have been fraught with added expenses to the multimillion-dollar price tag to live there. Strata fees skyrocketed around 40 per cent in 2019 to pay for repairs and hiked insurance, according to management emails.
Residents have also been forced to pay $US15,000 ($A19,000) in annual fees for the building’s private restaurant, which is run by a Michelin-starred chef, even though they were told this cost would be only $US1200 ($A1570) a year. The complimentary breakfast they were promised is off the menu now too.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recall is unavoidable.
Newsom’s poll numbers are tanking and the recall effort has attracted 1.4 million signatures.
According to two trusted California polls, Newsom’s approval rating has sharply dropped in the last few months.
Only 46% of California voters approve of Newsom’s job performance, down from a 67% approval rating from September.
Recall organizers have until March 17th to collect 1,495,709 signatures.
Californians are fed up with Newsom’s authoritarian Covid lockdown orders that have destroyed thousands of small businesses.
Newsom came under fire after he ordered businesses to close while keeping his own winery, Plumpjack Winery open.
Governor Newsom was also caught dining at The French Laundry in Napa Valley at $800 per person while telling Californians they couldn’t gather for Thanksgiving.
The Democrats in the California swamp are officially mobilizing to protect Newsom.

The campaign to oust Newsom went from unlikely to unavoidable this week as pervasive frustration with Newsom’s pandemic management cut sharply into his approval numbers. California Democrats and their political backers are bracing for a campaign nevertheless as recall organizers turn in hundreds of thousands of signatures. State lawmakers are proclaiming their support for Newsom, seeking to tamp down any signs of disunity. Interest groups and donors who would be called upon to fund a recall defense are quietly ramping up, with one union launching the first public counteroffensive.
“Are we getting prepared to oppose it? Of course,” said Joe Cotchett, a longtime ally and donor to Newsom.
Recall organizers are working to gather 2 million signatures because they know Newsom and the Democrat machine will fight to toss out “invalid signatures.”
