12 arrested in SWAT operation after activists armed with KNIVES & AXES briefly occupy hotel in Olympia, WA

A dozen people were arrested after armed protesters attempted to forcibly take over the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia, Washington. A SWAT team cleared out the hotel and escorted guests and employees out of the building.

Demonstrators armed with hatchets, batons, and knives stormed the Red Lion Hotel in downtown Olympia on Sunday, reportedly assaulting an employee who tried to lock the establishment’s doors. The rest of the staff barricaded themselves in the hotel’s basement, according to a police statement.

The group, identified as a homeless activism organization called Oly Housing Now, had earlier reserved 17 rooms in the hotel on behalf of “unhoused individuals,” city officials said. Around 45 people were involved in the brief occupation, with demonstrators demanding long-term accommodation for the city’s homeless. At the time, around 40 rooms were booked by guests not affiliated with the protesters, and many of them were forced to lock their doors until help arrived.

After receiving 911 calls from the hotel’s employees, police obtained a search warrant for first degree burglary, trespassing, and conspiracy to commit burglary, local media reported.

Washington State Patrol’s SWAT team, accompanied by local police and officers from the county sheriff’s office, entered the hotel on Sunday evening and began arresting the activists.

The SWAT team cleared out the building in a room-by-room search as law enforcement personnel escorted employees and guests to safety.

At least 12 individuals were arrested during the operation.

Videos taken at the scene show protesters outside of the hotel confronting police, who arrived in armored trucks and were outfitted in riot gear.

According to eyewitness reports, officers used crowd control munitions, including flashbangs, while retaking the hotel and dispersing crowds that had gathered outside the building.

Mayor Cheryl Selby denounced the activists in a statement, saying that their actions were “unproductive” and won’t make the goal of providing housing to those in need more attainable.

The capital of Washington state has been rocked by protests and violence in recent months. In December, one person was shot after left-wing Antifa activists clashed with a group of Proud Boys, a right-wing organization.

Burmese Leader Ousted For Vote Fraud In Military Coup Had Close Clinton, Soros Ties

Globalist liberal Aung San Suu Kyi was a close ally of leading Democrats

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who was ousted on Monday by the military for purported fraud in Burma’s November elections, had close ties to the Clinton family and Barack Obama.

Former Secretary Hillary Clinton had developed a close relationship with Aung San Suu Kyi following the first meeting between the two liberal female politicians in 2011, and upon meeting, they began “strategizing”.

“After so many years of reading and thinking about this celebrated Burmese dissident, we were finally face to face,” Clinton wrote in Hard Choices, her account of her tenure as Secretary of State. “I felt we had known each other for a lifetime, even though we had just met…Soon we were chatting, strategizing and laughing like old friends.”

Clinton advised Aung San Suu Kyi to contest a parliamentary seat in the 2012 Burmese elections, which Aung San Suu Kyi ultimately did, kickstarting the latter’s formal political career in Burma, also known as Myanmar.

The admiration between the two liberals went both ways. Aung San Suu Kyi heaped praise on Clinton,

Aung San Suu Kyi also received strong support from then-President Barack Obama, who routinely advocated for her release from house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested repeatedly during the 1990s and 2000s for “subversive acts”, following her involvement in riots against the Myanmar government.

Obama awarded her the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal in 2012, which she described as “one of the most moving days of my life”.

Ultimately, the Obama administration engineered Aung San Suu Kyi’s rise to power in 2015, by placing sanctions on Myanmar and insisting on only removing them if Aung San Suu Kyi was given a political role in the country.

Another important ally of Aung San Suu Kyi was progressive billionaire George Soros and his global NGO network, which strongly supported her activities.

“I have been and remain very much guided by her vision in my involvement in Burma,” Soros said after meeting her in 2012.

Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF) has had a ‘Burma Project’ since 1994, which worked for years to undermine the government of Myanmar. According to Myanmar’s Eleven Media, over 100 NGOs active in the country have received Soros funding:

George Soros, now 89 years old, has also been criticised as manipulating Myanmar’s politics with him supporting over 100 organizations through the Open Society Foundation (OSF), as stated on the foundation’s website.

The OSF had also stated that Fortify Right group, a group fighting for Bengali rights under the title human rights, was also funded by it once.

Much like Aung San Suu Kyi, leading Democrats in the United States have also been accused of committing widespread vote fraud and then refusing to allow any investigation into the evidence produced regarding it.

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the liberal National League for Democracy (NLD) party, served as the de-facto leader of the country, despite being constitutionally ineligible for the office. She ruled through her proxy, President Min Wynt, who was the formal leader of the country. The arrangement bears some similarity to the relationship between Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden in the United States. Both Aung San Suu Kyi and President Min Wynt were arrested by the military on Monday morning.

If you don’t look at the price of houses, or healthcare, or education, or food, or commodities, or stocks, or junk bonds then, yes, I suppose low gold and silver prices are worth considering. We all know modern economic textbooks are irrelevant in their treatment of money, which is exogenous to their ‘models’, but older studies are instructive. ‘The Mystery of Money’ (Taylor, 1862) is a product of its time and a British mind-set, but makes claims on money and metals that relate to the Redditors today. For example, prior to the Norman invasion of 1066, kings demanded tribute from their subjects in the form of direct labour or goods (crops, sheep, oxen, etc.). This meant everyone could pay their taxes. It also made physical production of key goods doubly worthwhile, both to eat/store, and to pay taxes with. (Taylor calls this ‘tribute money’.) However, subsequent kings shifted to allowing tax payments first as either labor/goods or in silver coin which as a precious metal had its own value - ‘mercantile money’ as he dubs it and eventually to only in silver. Notably, this came with serious, negative side effects.

For centuries, royals failed to maintain an adequate physical supply of silver coinage, with crippling economic, deflationary effects. For the first time, Evan Rachel Wood is attaching a name to her alleged abuser.

On Monday morning, the “Westworld” Emmy nominee dropped a bombshell revelation about horrific abuse she claims to have suffered while in a relationship with musician Marilyn Manson.

“The name of my abuser is Brian Warner,” she wrote on Instagram and in a statement to Vanity Fair.

“Also known to the world as Marilyn Manson. He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years,” the 33-year-old actress continued. “I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail. I am here to expose this dangerous man and call out the many industries that have enabled him, before he ruins any more lives. I stand with the many victims who will no longer be silent.”

Wood began a romantic relationship with the goth singer as a teen, though the pair kept quiet until Wood reached the age of 19. Manson, now 52, was 38 when the couple came out. In 2010, they were briefly engaged before calling it quits.

But it wasn’t until years later that rumors would take hold that Manson had groomed Wood into an abusive and subservient relationship.

Last fall, Manson abruptly ended an interview with UK music site Metal Hammer when the reporter mentioned Wood’s name. The shock-rocker’s camp later issued a lengthy statement, denying all abuse charges.

Reps for both Manson and Wood did not immediately return Page Six’s request for comment about her latest statements.

Along with the recent post, she has also taken to social media to share shocking stories on behalf of several other women who allege they have also been groomed and abused by the “Dope Show” singer — and now want him held “accountable.”

Wood’s message comes five years after she first spoke out about an abusive relationship, to Rolling Stone in 2016. In 2019, Wood helped forge California’s Phoenix Act, a bill that extended the statute of limitations for domestic violence cases from three to five years — and gave testimony on her “rape and torture” during the California Senate hearing.

“I mustered the courage to leave several times, but he would call my house incessantly and threaten to kill himself,” Wood said in her testimony. “On one occasion, I returned to try and defuse the situation, he cornered me in our bedroom, and asked me to kneel. Then he tied me up by my hands and feet. Once I was restrained he beat me and shocked sensitive parts of my body with a torture device called a violet wand. To him it was a way for me to prove my loyalty. The pain was excruciating. It felt like I left my body and a part of me died that day.”

Will Joe Cotchett's Divorce History Haunt Him?

Joe Cotchett, the Joe Biden fundraiser and longtime friend who is largely responsible for the Biden administration’s upcoming federal judge picks, was accused by his ex-wife in his divorce case of physically abusing his children and making his daughters uncomfortable for walking around naked in front of them.

Politico Playbook reported: “The Biden administration’s transition team has tapped powerhouse Bay Area attorney Joe Cotchett to chair a key committee to recommend federal judges to Biden. “You saw what Trump did, in appointing 200-plus federal judges,’’ he told POLITICO in an interview. Cotchett’s friendship with Biden goes back 45 years — so, he said, he has agreed to help the new administration work quickly to identify qualified federal judges who will apply for senior status, so those seats can be filled quickly and efficiently.”

Kamala Harris’ ex-boyfriend Willie Brown also recently stated that Cotchett is leading a commission to recommend judges to Biden. Cotchett is co-chairing the commission of lawyers, according to California Courts Newsroom.

As National File has noted, Joe Cotchett, a San Francisco trial lawyer, reportedly co-hosted a $1,500 to $10,000 per head fundraiser for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign in October 2019 in Palo Alto, California. Cotchett is closely tied to Biden. Described by POLITICO as “a longtime friend of Biden’s and prominent West Coast Biden bundler,” Cotchett lobbied for Tammy Duckworth to become Biden’s running mate. But Cotchett previously tried to seal records pertaining to his divorce, and certain allegations made by his art critic ex-wife Victoria.

SF Weekly reported on May 23, 2007: “In her March 28 sworn declaration, she accused Cotchett of being a name-calling tyrant, one who would push his kids’ faces into their plates, or pull them away from the table by their hair when they didn’t finish their meals. She also described him as a foul-mouthed heavy drinker who averaged one bottle of wine each evening and drove with a plastic glass of wine, sometimes when the girls were in the car with him. She claimed her hubby liked to walk around the house naked — even as the couple’s two daughters grew older and became uncomfortable with his nudity. When she asked him to stop, he allegedly screamed he would do “whatever he fucking well pleased,” according to her court declaration. (Cotchett filed depositions of a nanny and a housekeeper who said they never witnessed any sort of abuse.)”

Biden’s vice president Kamala Harris previously said that she believes a coterie of women including a former Nevada lieutenant governor candidate who accused Joe Biden of touching them inappropriately or kissing or sniffing them. This past statement could come back to haunt Harris now that she is Biden’s running mate.

“I believe them and I respect them being able to tell their story and having the courage to do it,” Kamala Harris said in April 2019, speaking in Nevada.

Left-wing Capitol activist John Sullivan accused of violating terms of release with Internet use

He was released conditionally without bail on Jan. 15

John Sullivan, the 26-year-old left-wing activist from Utah who recorded an up-close video of a woman's fatal shooting during the U.S. Capitol insurrection Jan. 6, has been accused of breaking the terms of his release agreement regarding his use of the Internet.

In a court document filed last week, U.S. Pretrial Services Officer Josh Cahoon alleged that Sullivan violated his approved Internet usage on four separate instances, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

JOHN SULLIVAN RELEASED CONDITIONALLY WITHOUT BAIL BY UTAH FEDERAL JUDGE

Magistrate Judge Daphne Oberg, of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, issued a court summons for Sullivan based on the filing. He faces federal charges of civil disorder, entering a restricted building and violent entry or disorderly conduct.

The judge had ordered Sullivan to be released conditonally without bail on Jan. 15, deciding that prosecutors failed to meet the legal threshold required to keep him jailed. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Reeves had argued Sullivan is a risk for trying to threaten witnesses or jurors, but Oberg said Reeves lacked substantial evidence.

The terms of his release agreement required Sullivan to stay off social media before trial, surrender his passport and be on house arrest. He also was ordered to stop working for the Insurgence USA activist group he founded, although he didn't have to cede control. His computer and internet activities would be monitored.

His attorney, Mary Corporon, did not immediately return a Fox News request for comment Monday.

In a previous interview with Fox News, Sullivan said he followed a pro-Trump mob into the Capitol in order to "document" the siege. He claimed in a separate interview with Rolling Stone that he was putting on an act to build rapport with the protesters.

Video that Sullivan – also a former Olympic speed skating hopeful – recorded for his social media accounts was later given to the FBI as evidence, according to a criminal complaint.

Robinhood narrows trade restrictions list to 8 companies, including GameStop

Online brokerage Robinhood has cut down the list of its restricted stocks, from as many as 50 on Friday to eight starting Monday. Trade in short-squeeze names like GameStop has been limited due to last week’s explosive rallies.

Companies that still face limitations include GameStop, AMC Entertainment Holdings, Blackberry, and others, Robinhood said, noting that the limits may be “subject to change throughout the day.”

Opening new positions in those securities is limited, according to its website, which lists the maximum number of shares and options contracts each user can hold. For those whose current holdings already exceed the limits, their positions won’t be sold or closed. At the moment, customers can only buy one share of GameStop’s stock and five options contracts.

The millennial-favored stock trading app said on Friday it had put buying restrictions in place after its clearinghouse deposit requirements for equities increased last week. “It was not because we wanted to stop people from buying these stocks,” Robinhood said.

The trading app, which is popular among retail investors who fostered the rise of GameStop stock, has been under fire for its decision to restrict trading of high-flying stocks that surged after being touted on social media.

On Sunday, US Senator Elizabeth Warren called for a broader review by the Securities and Exchange Commission on recent trading swings. She said a broker-dealer like Robinhood that invites a lot of individual investors needs to operate “under some basic rules.”

“You can’t do that in the middle of a trading cycle,” Warren told CNN about Robinhood’s trading limits. “It’s not about protecting people from making bad trades. It’s about keeping the playing field level.”

A speculative buying frenzy swept Wall Street last week due to a wave of stay-at-home traders who used social media, in this case Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum, to coordinate massive short squeezes. Shares of GameStop, a struggling brick-and-mortar video game retailer, catapulted 400 percent in the past week, closing out January with a 1,625 percent rally. The stock of American basic cable television channel AMC surged 277 percent last week, while headphone maker Koss soared more than 1,800 percent higher.

Sen. Amanda Chase is filing a federal lawsuit against the Senate of Virginia after she was censured last month.

The Democratic-controlled state Senate voted 24-9, rebuking Republican Senator Amanda Chase for what they call a “pattern of unacceptable conduct.” The censure comes after she voiced support for those who stormed the U.S. Capitol.

According to an announcement from Chase’s team, attorneys are filing a lawsuit on Monday against the Senate of Virginia in United States District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia for a civil rights violation.

“I’m going to continue to speak the truth. I will continue to do so in a way that I feel helps people to listen. I don’t think I’ve said or misspoken,” said Chase last month. Chase represents Virginia’s 11th District and is also running for governor.

“Free speech is not absolute. We all have freedom of speech. We can’t yell ‘fire’ in a theater. We can’t make seditious comments or insightful comments. We can’t slander others. Many of the comments that Senator Chase made were in line with that,” said Democratic Senator John Bell, who represents Virginia’s 13th district and introduced the resolution against Chase.

“Today, Attorney Tim Anderson of Anderson and Associates in Virginia Beach, will file a federal lawsuit on behalf of plaintiff Senator Amanda Chase, candidate for Governor in the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia, against the Senate of Virginia for a civil rights violation, related to the public censure issued against her as a Virginia State Senator for their intentional, knowingly and deliberate violations offending the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution as well as a total disregard to follow its own due process rules in issuing the censure.

The Plaintiff has received a public censure from the Virginia Senate for speech and expression that is protected under the United States Constitution, namely free speech and political expression. The issuance of a censure, issued by the Virginia Senate, was unlawful and contrary to the Plaintiff’s Constitutional rights. This Court can provide redress the harm to the Plaintiff by declaring rights of the parties, issuing injunctive relief regarding the censure and expungement of the censure to the Plaintiff. London Bridge Jihadi’s Widow Granted 15K in Legal Aid, as Victim’s Families Denied Funding

The British taxpayer has shelled out over £15,000 to the widow of the mastermind behind the 2017 London Bridge terror attack, while the families of victims were denied similar financial support.

Zahrah Rehman — the widow of Islamic State-inspired Pakistani-born husband Khuram Butt — was given £15,660 in legal aid for the inquest into the death of her husband and his two jihadi accomplices. She was provided with a group of stand-funded solicitors as well as a QC during the inquiry.

While Rehman was given taxpayer support, the families of the victims were not afforded an automatic right to be legally represented during the inquiries, The Mirror reported. Police shot dead all three jihadists at the scene of the terror attack; the newspaper explained that legal aid is often offered to the relatives of those killed by the state.

James Hodder — the boyfriend of Australian nurse Kirsty Boden, who was stabbed to death during the attack while trying to save other victims — said: “I’m sure she [Ms Rehman] needed financial aid quite rightly, but so did we. What’s the difference?”

“I would demand a fully transparent justification for why the attackers’ families are supported by the state but none of the victims’ families were given a single penny,” he said.

He concluded: “Representation at the inquest was essential. The inquest involves incredibly complex and niche areas of law.

“Without a trained legal team you stand no chance of being able to scrutinise proceedings and ensure lessons can be learnt. You simply can’t engage with the inquest without legal support.”

Aside from funding the legal expenses of the terrorist’s widow, the public also spent some £781,784 to represent the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service.

The Ministry of Justice said: “Bereaved families at inquests have a special status which means that the coroner can ask questions on their behalf to help ensure they get the answers they need.”

During the inquest, Zahrah Rehman claimed that she was unaware of her jihadi husband’s terroristic intentions, saying: “We were living together. But it was almost as if we were living different lives.

“I knew it was a possibility that he wanted to go to Syria… but he never told me that he hates this country and wanted to attack this country.”

The video, set to a laughing track, is doctored and fake, officials said, though an explanation on what the video does show was not offered.

GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger says 'we traffic in lies' as he launches campaign to 'take party back' from Trump and QAnon-following congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene

Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger has launched a new campaign to take the party back from influence of members like Donald Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

'The Republican Party has lost its way. If we are to lead again, we need to muster the courage to remember who we are,' Kinzinger, 42, said in a video launching his Country 1st PAC.

'Republicans must say enough is enough. It's time to unplug the outrage machine, reject the politics of personality, and cast aside the conspiracy theories and the rage,' he added.

His political action committee, unveiled in a six-minute video released Sunday, will challenge the current direction of a GOP that Kinzinger argues has wrongly become a 'Trump-first party.'

'The biggest danger right now is that we've become a party that dabbles — not just dabbles — we traffic in conspiracies and we traffic in lies,' the GOP representative from Illinois said.

The PAC will serve as his way to financially influence the GOP ahead of the 2022 midterm election.

And it comes as the Republican Party is struggling with a deep divide in its ranks - between the radical beliefs associated with Trump and Greene and the traditionalists who want to return the party to its conservative roots.

Kinzinger, a former darling of the conservative Tea Party movement, decried the views of people like Greene and made it clear he thinks House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has shown weak leadership when it comes to dealing with the more radical elements of the GOP.

But his move also shows the dilemma that many Republicans face - speaking out against Trump angers the former president's millions of loyal supporters, who are a force of their own in the GOP.

Kinzinger revealed to NBC' 'Meet the Press' on Sunday that he has had friends and family turn against him, telling him he's 'possessed by the devil' as he distanced himself from the Trump wing.

He was one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting the January 6th attack, which he cited as a personal breaking point for himself. Kinzinger is an Air Force veteran, who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Illinois Republican Party is expected to censure Kinzinger for his impeachment vote.

He decried the actions of Greene, who has come to national prominence in recent days as her past musing on social media have come to light, including that she thought California's wildfire was caused by space lasers; claimed that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, before her death, was using a body double; and that Hillary Clinton and Huma Abedin cut off a child's face while she was alive - all of which are false.

Kinzinger also had harsh words for Trump ally on Capitol Hill Rep. Jim Jordan, who is pushing to expel Republican Rep. Liz Cheney for the party leadership for criticizing Trump for inciting the MAGA mob who attacked the Capitol, leaving five dead and a path of destruction in their wake.

'They're political terrorists,' Kinzinger said of Jordan and his allies, on a zoom call with reporters over the weekend, according to The Washington Post.

But Greene also has her own strong cache of supporters. She announced on Friday she raised $1.6 million off all the controversy surrounding her and revealed on Saturday she had spoken to Trump, who, in the past, called her a 'future Republican star.'

Republicans are facing their own reckoning as they struggle on a path forward after losing control of the White House and the Senate to Democrats.

McCarthy is expected to meet face-to-face with Greene this week to discuss her social media postings, many of which happened before she was a member of Congress. In them, she expressed support for killing Democratic politicians, touted unfounded QAnon theories along with racist views.

The House Republican Conference meets Wednesday to debate Cheney's status and discuss whether to punish Greene for her actions.

McCarthy originally said Trump bares some responsibility for the January 6th MAGA riot on Capitol Hill, for which the former president criticized him, reportedly calling him a 'p***y.'

But McCarthy apparently has made amends. On Thursday he met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Palm beach, Florida, in a meeting that was described as 'very good and cordial.' The readout was released with a photo of the two men smiling.

America has vowed to 'take action' if Myanmar military coup is not reversed after soldiers arrested de facto leader Aung San Suu Ky, the president and members of parliament in dawn raids on Monday.

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken condemned the reports in a statement released overnight, and called for the military to 'reverse these actions immediately'.

The generals struck amid fears that Suu Kyi would use her new mandate - which saw her humiliate military-backed parties at a vote held last year - to reform the constitution and remove their strangle-hold on power.

Military leaders, who claim the vote was fraudulent, have now declared a year-long state of emergency, appointed Vice President Myint Swe - a former general - as acting president, and closed all banks until further notice.

'The United States expresses grave concern and alarm regarding reports that the Burmese military has detained multiple civilian government leaders, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and civil society leaders,' the statement said.

'We call on Burmese military leaders to release all government officials and civil society leaders and respect the will of the people of Burma as expressed in democratic elections on November 8. The United States stands with the people of Burma in their aspirations for democracy, freedom, peace, and development.'

All government functions have been transferred to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to 'guarantee national stability' until fresh elections can be held, the military said via its own TV channel after state TV went off air, while promising the vote would take place within a year.

The NLD released a statement they said had been written by Suu Kyi before her arrest, which called for people 'to protest against the coup' while warning that generals want to 'put the country back under a dictatorship'.

Along with the US, the UK, Japan and Australia were among those condemning the coup early Monday, with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying: 'The vote of the people must be respected and civilian leaders released.'

India Farmers’ Protests: Internet Shutdown Highlights Modi’s Record of Stifling Digital Dissent

The storming of the Red Fort in Delhi on January 26 marked an escalation of tensions between the Indian government – led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi – and farmers who have been protesting against agricultural reforms since August 2020.

With footage of the farmers clashing with police going viral, the Red Fort incident also marked a spike in interest in the farmers’ movement around the world, much to Modi’s embarrassment.

The authorities’ response to events at the Red Fort – a historic building symbolic of Indian independence, and located in the very heart of Old Delhi – was swift. Delhi Police shut down the city’s internet, affecting more than 52 million mobile phone subscribers. The shutdown was ostensibly in the interest of public safety, but it’s also the latest episode in India’s long-running story of heavy-handed internet crackdowns – a strategy used time and again to quell swelling protest movements.

India’s control over the internet is comparable to some of the world’s most authoritarian countries. While India ranks second in the world in terms of mobile internet subscribers, the country also leads in shutdowns. They’re used with alarming regularity to disrupt protest movements and – in the case of Kashmir, currently under the world’s longest internet shutdown – to control entire populations.

During the Citizen Act protests last year, shutdowns were used in Aligarh – home to the Aligarh Muslim University – one of the hubs of the protests, where severe police brutality is alleged to have taken place. The Indian government implemented more than 106 internet shutdowns in 2019 alone – the vast majority in response to protests.

This control is largely achieved via the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, passed into law in 2017, which expanded the government’s powers for surveillance and connectivity suspension, empowering it to control dissent and opposition.

In Kashmir, where there are tight restrictions on the rights to free expression, speech and assembly, internet shutdowns function as an “invisibility cloak” to crack down on dissent and isolate Kashmiris from the rest of the world. Because India’s supreme court has ruled that “indefinite internet shutdowns” are illegal, India’s government instead downgrades or “throttles” Kashmir’s mobile connectivity from 4G to 2G, seriously limiting what can be loaded on phones.

The recent events at the Red Fort also presented an example of India’s disinformation ecosystem. At a pivotal moment, some protesters raised a flag sacred to Sikhs next to the Indian flag, even as movement leaders pleaded with them to climb down. Hundreds of cameras caught the moment the flags where raised, uploading photos to social media.

These images were immediately seized upon by social media influencers loyal to Modi, who began a disinformation campaign which spread across the country, claiming the flag to be that of Khalistani separatists. In Modi’s India, separatists are often depicted as enemies of the state. Disinformation spreads particularly quickly in India, where mobile internet packages make it cheaper to access social media than to run a Google search. This lack of “net neutrality” – favouring traffic to certain websites over others – discourages users from fact-checking what they see on social media.

Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki has criticised what he considered to be a "fight for power" in the country between the president and the parliament, warning that this would negatively affect the country's stability.

In a post on Facebook, Marzouki commented on Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi's remarks that the country's president's role is "symbolic", saying: "So, the Parliament Speaker considers that we are in a parliamentary system and the president of the republic elected by the people is just a symbol!"

"So the President of the Republic also sees that the political system is dysfunctional and that he has the right to intervene with the formation and functioning of the government, in addition to saying that the parliament is the problem and it is not representing the people who assume the responsibility for their choices."

Marzouki added: "The most terrible aspect about the situation is not faking ignorance of the provisions of the constitution, but rather the disregard for its content as the only document that is discussed, disputed, and accepted by the representatives of the people for the first time in our history, and that it was accepted as a compromise between the different parties, as is always the case in a pluralist society, in order to avoid tyranny."

Tunisia is witnessing a political and constitutional crisis, as President Kais Saied refuses to allow newly-appointed government members to swear their oath of office, justifying his decision using the suspicions of corruption which have surrounded some ministers.

Many believe that the new ministers are unable to start work before taking the oath of office before the president, while others believe they can assume their duties as they have the trust of parliament.

Kushner Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Former Trump-administration official Jared Kushner and his top aide Avi Berkowitz received nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for their role in securing the Abraham Accords last summer.

Kushner and his team played a lead role in mediating negotiations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates that led to normalization of relations between the two countries. Former U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman and his Israeli counterpart Ron Dermer were also nominated.

Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz nominated the former White House staffers in a letter reported by Reuters on Sunday. Dershowitz’s letter noted the "enormous" role played by the American delegation in achieving normalization between the UAE and Israel.

In his letter, Dershowitz emphasized "the enormous contributions to peace made by Jared Kushner, Avrahm Berkowitz, David Friedman and Ron Dermer."

"These men played especially important roles," Dershowitz said. "[The accords] hold the promise of an even broader peace in the Middle East between Israel, the Palestinians, and other Arab nations. They are a giant step forward in bringing peace and stability to the region, and even to the world."

Gulf states are still feeling the wide-ranging impacts of the new peace brokered by the Trump administration. Israel and the UAE continue to strengthen commercial and diplomatic ties, and Bahrain also normalized ties to Israel following the Abraham Accords. Iran, meanwhile, has lost leverage with Gulf partners since the agreement.

The Biden administration appears prepared to upend some of the diplomatic progress made in Middle Eastern affairs. Last week, President Joe Biden halted the sale of F-35 fighter jets to UAE, a sale previously endorsed by Israel. Biden also appointed Robert Malley as Iran envoy last week. Malley previously worked in the Obama and Clinton administrations and has a history of hostility toward Israeli interests, as well as a record of advocating conciliatory policies toward Iran and its affiliated terror groups.

The 10-time Primetime Emmy Award-nominated writer and producer for “The Simpsons” Marc Wilmore has died at 57 after developing complications from the coronavirus. 

“My sweet sweet brother, Marc Edward Wilmore, passed away last night while battling COVID and other conditions that have had him in pain for many years,” Wilmore’s older brother and fellow comedian Larry Wilmore tweeted on Sunday. “My brother was the kindest, gentlest, funniest, lion of an angel I’ve ever known. I love you little brother.”

After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, Wilmore began his career in the ‘90s writing — and then as a cast member — on sketch comedy show “In Living Color.” His writing there earned him his first Emmy nomination. Following “In Living Color,” he became a writer for “The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno,” as well as his brother Larry’s stop-motion sitcom “The PJs.”

Wilmore went on to be a co-executive producer and writer for “The Simpsons,” as well as the animated series “F Is For Family.” His voice also appeared in the occasional character of the shows he worked on, according to IMDb.

The Chinese government may have stolen personal data from 80% of American adults, according to a “60 Minutes” report.

Bill Evanina, former director of the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center, on Sunday appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes when he warned that Beijing is attempting to collect and exploit Americans’ health care information, including their DNA.

According to the intelligence official, BGI Group — the world’s largest biotech firm — approached Washington and five other states with offers to build and run state-of-the-art coronavirus testing labs. The Chinese firm also promised to “provide technical expertise, high throughput sequences” and “make additional donations” to the states.

The offer raised suspicions, prompting Evanina to issue warnings to the states against taking up BGI Group’s proposal.

“Foreign powers can collect, store and exploit biometric information from covid tests,” the advisory read. “Knowing that BGI is a Chinese company, do we understand where that data’s going?”

Evanina also claimed that China used “less-than-honorable” methods to steal data from foreign countries, including hacking health care companies and technology — such as smart homes, sensors and 5G networks—in the U.S. to collect Americans’ personal data.

“Current estimates are that 80% of American adults have had all of their personally identifiable information stolen by the Communist Party of China,” he said.

The information collected from various technology, when combined with a person’s biodata, can be used to bypass doctors and help Chinese companies create a monopoly over treatments and medicine that could improve a person’s health.

The same system has allegedly been used by Chinese authorities to identify and suppress the Uighur Muslims. Under the guise of free check-ups, Chinese officials are collecting DNA that could help them target other family members and improve their facial recognition software.

In July 2020, the U.S. Department of Commerce sanctioned two Chinese subsidiaries of BGI Group for its involvement in the repression of the Uighurs.

Blinken: Iran could be weeks away from enough nuclear material for bomb

Blinken said that the administration would consider new sanctions against North Korea as well as other possible actions against Russia.

Iran could be “weeks away” from having sufficient material to develop a nuclear weapon if it continues to violate the 2015 nuclear deal, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned on Monday in an interview with NBC News.

Blinken said that President Joe Biden’s administration would consider new sanctions against North Korea as well as other possible actions against Russia. It was the new secretary’s first television interview since taking office last week.

He told NBC it could be only “a matter of weeks” if Iran continues to lift restraints in the JCPOA that the United States pulled out of under president Donald Trump.

According to NBC, when pressed about whether the release of detained Americans would be an absolute condition for an expanded nuclear treaty, he did not commit.

“Irrespective of… any deal, those Americans need to be released. Period,” he told the network. “We’re going to focus on making sure that they come home one way or another.”

On Sunday, Iran rejected any new negotiations or changes to the participants in Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers, after French President Emmanuel Macron said new talks should include Saudi Arabia.

The remarks came after the White House confirmed that veteran diplomat Robert Malley was named special US envoy for Iran. A key member of former president Barack Obama’s nuclear negotiating team, Malley is a controversial figure in Israel, where he is viewed as soft on Tehran and tough on Jerusalem.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh was quoted by state media on Saturday as saying: “The nuclear accord is a multilateral international agreement ratified by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that is non-negotiable, and parties to it are clear and unchangeable.”

Biden’s new administration has said it would rejoin the deal, which the Trump administration exited in 2018, but only after Tehran resumes full compliance with its terms.

“It is clear the Iranians are playing hardball, which is why the pressure on them cannot let up,” said an Israeli official. “There’s only a hope the Iranians will compromise if they believe that’s the only way the pressure will be lifted. If pressure is lifted prematurely, one can expect no concessions from the Iranians whatsoever.”

During his confirmation hearings, Blinken said the Biden administration would consult with its allies in the Middle East, including Israel, before engaging in talks with Iran. Israeli officials have expressed hope that this means there will be a positive dialogue moving forward, and emphasized the need to completely stop Iran’s nuclear program.

According to a 2015 indictment, he was part of a larger group of FIFA officials who took part in “a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer.”

The Associated Press reported that Vasquez made a remote appearance in front of the Brooklyn Federal court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to racketeering conspiracy charges.

Vasquez was sentenced to eight years in jail for embezzlement of social contributions in El Salvador in March 2017.

In October 2019, FIFA banned Vasquez for life from taking part in any football-related activity after finding him guilty of bribery. He was fined CHF 500,000 (US$502,000, at that time).

He is scheduled to appear in the New York Court court on April 7.

ISIS Attacks Popular Mobilization Units As Iraqi Sources Blame U.S. For Airlifting Terrorists

On January 31, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) announced that they have repelled an ISIS attack in the region of Jurf al-Sakhar in the province of Babil. According to the statement, the attack was repelled by the Al-Jazirah Operation Headquarters Command.

The incident took place as pro-Iranian sources blame the US for assisting ISIS in its operations against the PMU.

Sabah al-Akili told al-Maloumeh news website on January 31 that the US military airlifts ISIS units to areas behind PMU positions in Jurf al-Sakhar region.

“The strategic military goal of the US forces is to cause division in Jurf al-Sakhar in order to create a threat to nearby provinces and to invent a pretext for American forces to stay in Iraq,” he said.

Al-Akili claimed that the move is designed to provide a justification for the Iraqi government to ask the US troops to remain in the Arab country.

“Foreign and [Iraqi] political parties, backed by the US, are doing their utmost to drive the Hashd al-Sha’abi (PMU) forces out of Jurf al-Sakhar, which connects the provinces of Babil, al-Anbar and Baghdad via the holy [city of] Karbala,” he added.

Meanwhile, another convoy of the US-led coalition was attacked by local resistance groups. The logistics support convoy was targeted in the central Iraqi province of Babil. Qasim Al-Jabbarin group claimed responsibility for the attack. An explosion of improvised explosive device allegedly led to no casualties.

Meanwhile on other parts of the frontline:

RICHMOND — State Sen. Amanda F. Chase is suing her colleagues in the Virginia Senate, saying last week's vote to censure her and strip her of her seniority amounts to a violation of her constitutional right to free speech and due process.

The suit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Richmond, names Senate clerk Susan Clarke as a defendant and asks that she not allow the publication of the reprimand in the chamber's public journal pending the outcome of the case. Virginia Beach attorney Tim Anderson, who is seeking election to one of the city's House of Delegates seats this year, filed the suit on Chase's behalf.

The suit claims that the 24-9 vote on Jan. 27 violated Chase's rights under the First and 14th Amendments to the Constitution that guarantee the right to free speech and equal access to due process, respectively. It says the allegations made in the censure resolution were not properly vetted by the Senate Privileges & Elections Committee before anything was filed.

The move was not completely unexpected, as Chase had said several times prior to the vote that she would sue if the Senate supported the censure.

Chase, R-Chesterfield County, reiterated those claims in a statement Monday to The Progress-Index. She said the censure was brought by "the political elite class of the Senate" who disagree with her political persuasions. Chase, an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump, is running for the Republican nomination for governor this year, and claimed the reprimand was a political hit job on her campaign.

"The First Amendment of the Constitution applies to everyone, and you do not lose it when you become an elected official,: Chase said. "The majority of the Senate of Virginia believe that collectively they can silence the First Amendment as long as they do it with a group vote."

The censure resolution, sponsored by Democratic Sen. John Bell of Loudoun County, was supported by all 21 Democrats in the Senate, plus three Republicans. One of them is Senate Minority Leader Thomas K. Norment Jr. of James City County, with whom Chase has publicly feuded in recent years over direction of the Senate leadership. Six Republicans opted not to vote for or against the resolution.

At one point during the two-hour debate on the Senate floor, Lt. Gov. Justin E. Fairfax — a Democrat who is the Senate's presiding officer — ruled that the resolution had not been properly put forth in the chamber because there was no evidence the charges in it were ever investigated by Senate P&E, which is standard protocol. Senators immediately voted to overturn Fairfax's decision.

"The Virginia Senate knowingly and intentionally violated its own rules overruling its own President and proceeding with a censure that was both unconstitutional on its face and in blatant violation of its own rules," Chase said Monday.

Messages left with Schaar's office and the Virginia attorney general seeking comment have not yet been answered.

In a post on his law firm's Facebook page, Anderson said he would not comment on the case while it proceeds through the system. He did, though, share thoughts on the central issue of the case.

"The comments made by Senator Chase were entirely protected by the First Amendment and censure of the Senator was nothing more than an attempt to silence her free political speech and expression," Anderson wrote. "As Americans we do not have to agree with what someone says but we must agree to defend each American's right to freely exercise their First Amendment Rights. Any attempts to silence legitimate political free speech will be met with maximum lawful resistance by this office on behalf of any client of this firm."

The original resolution charged Chase with "formenting" the Constitution by taking part in a Jan. 6 Stop The Steal Rally in Washington, an event staged by pro-Trump supporters. The rally, which included a speech by Trump decrying his Nov. 3 loss to Democrat Joe Biden as ripe with still-unsubstantiated voting fraud, devolved into a riot by some rally attendees inside the U.S. Capitol trying to stop certification of the Electoral College vote. Six people died in the violence.

Chase spoke during the morning hours of the rally, but was not part of the Capitol rush. Later, she denounced the violence, but defended the rally as a group of "patriots" who were tired of Democrats trying to ram socialist policies through government.

Despite public denials, well-known citizenship broker Henley & Partners helped disgraced financier Jho Low, who stands accused of stealing billions from Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, obtain a passport from Cyprus.

Key Findings

Henley & Partners identified Jho Low as a high-risk client with political exposure, but worked with him anyway, using a Cypriot company as an intermediary.

Henley made 60,000 euros from a citizenship fee paid via this company, and far more — 650,000 euros — from helping arrange a real estate deal for Low to purchase a luxury seaside villa.

Shell companies and nominee service providers helped obscure Low’s real estate deal.

Several Low associates also applied for Cypriot citizenship around the same time, and publicly available documents suggest that they bought villas near his.

Jho Taek Low had billions of dollars, but he was running out of places to put them.

By 2015, the Malaysian financier had become the face of the now-infamous 1MDB embezzlement scandal. His theft of billions from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund had been widely reported. So had the trail of splashy purchases he made around the world: a transparent grand piano for supermodel Miranda Kerr, a New York City penthouse once owned by Jay-Z, a $6-million emerald green soup can painted by Andy Warhol, an entire hotel in Beverly Hills.

Banks were increasingly wary of him. So were governments. He was under investigation by law enforcement in Singapore and Switzerland. U.S. authorities were closing in, too. He needed a safe refuge for both himself and his money.

To solve these problems, Low turned to the sunny eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus, where, with a view to establishing a new financial foothold, he purchased citizenship in 2015 under the country’s controversial “golden passport” scheme.

Technically known as Citizenship By Investment, the program was meant to attract wealthy foreigners seeking European Union passports. But in the eyes of critics, its main effect was to make Cyprus a go-to destination for kleptocrats and criminals who want to pay their way into the bloc. It also proved lucrative for a small army of lawyers and financial service providers who greased the wheels.

The program was ditched last October after a damning investigation by Al Jazeera exposed local politicians offering to help a fictitious Chinese criminal get citizenship. The circumstances under which Low received his golden passport are under scrutiny by Cypriot authorities.

Now, an investigation by OCCRP and the Sarawak Report can reveal previously undisclosed details about how Low obtained Cypriot citizenship — and who helped him do it.

Though his connection to one of the world’s biggest thefts of public funds had already been widely exposed, he was able to hire London-based Henley & Partners, perhaps the world’s best-known passport brokerage firm, to provide him with citizenship services.

Court Fines Navalny’s Wife After Protests in Moscow

MOSCOW—A Moscow court on Monday ordered the wife of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to pay a fine of 20,000 rubles ($265) for violating protest regulations after she attended a demonstration in the Russian capital to demand his release.

Tens of thousands protested across Russia’s 11 time zones on Sunday, chanting slogans against Russian President Vladimir Putin and demanding that authorities free Navalny, who was jailed last month and faces a prison term. Over 5,400 protesters were detained by authorities, one group said.

While Russia’s state-run media dismissed the demonstrations as small and claimed that they showed the opposition’s failure, Navalny’s team said the turnout on Sunday demonstrated “overwhelming nationwide support” for the Kremlin’s fiercest critic.

Navalny’s allies have called for another demonstration in Moscow on Tuesday, when a court is scheduled to hear the authorities’ motion to send him to prison for up to 3 1/2 years.

His wife, Yulia Navalnaya, joined a protest in Moscow on Sunday that took place despite unprecedented security measures that city authorities took ahead of the rally. She was quickly detained and charged with participating in an unauthorized rally. A court on Monday ordered Navalnaya to pay a fine, her lawyer Svetlana Davydova told the Interfax news agency. Davydova said the defense plans to appeal the ruling.

In the largest outpouring of discontent Russia had seen in years, mass protests engulfed dozens of Russian cities for the second weekend in a row despite efforts by Russian authorities to stifle the unrest triggered by the jailing of 44-year-old Navalny, Putin’s most well-known foe.

Navalny was arrested Jan. 17 upon his return from Germany, where he spent five months recovering from nerve-agent poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin. Russian authorities have rejected the accusations. He faces a prison term for alleged probation violations from a 2014 money-laundering conviction which has been widely seen as politically motivated.

After his arrest, Navalny’s team released a two-hour YouTube video about an opulent Black Sea residence purportedly built for Putin. The video has been viewed over 100 million times, further stoking Russians’ discontent amid an economic downturn.

The rallies following Navalny’s arrest appear to have rattled the Kremlin. In an effort to quell the protests, the authorities have jailed Navalny’s associates and activists across the country. His brother Oleg, top ally Lyubov Sobol and three other people were put under a two-month house arrest and face criminal charges.

A total of 40 criminal probes have been opened in 18 Russian regions in connection to the protests, said Pavel Chikov, head of the human rights organization Agora.

“The United States removed sanctions on Burma over the past decade based on progress toward democracy,” Biden said Monday in a statement. “The reversal of that progress will necessitate an immediate review of our sanction laws and authorities, followed by appropriate action.”

The coup in Myanmar, previously known as Burma, could prove to be an early test case of the Biden administration’s vow to defend democracy “wherever it is under attack,” as the president’s statement said. If carried out, the policy would represent an abrupt shift from the Trump administration, which often muted traditional criticism of authoritarian governments.

It’s not clear how much impact the threat of U.S. sanctions would have on Myanmar’s military leaders. The country has seen limited U.S. investment despite a nascent opening to democracy over the past decade, partly because of the government’s persecution of minority Rohingya Muslims. The military can also likely count on support from China, which is a bigger player in the nation.

Summary: Prolonged stresses imposed on individuals or networked populations produce phased, cumulative defensive response in the brain resulting in behavioral changes. The United States Needs a BBC

The Beeb’s influence is rising stateside, revealing a hunger for nonpartisan news. America’s own networks should take note.

In July 2020, the BBC released some remarkable numbers: In the previous 12 months, 438 million people had tuned into BBC News, 351 million to the BBC World Service, and 137 million to BBC Global News. All three channels, as well as the BBC’s entertainment channel, had registered double-digit growth. The figures were especially surprising given that, unlike certain U.S. news outlets and online media platforms, “the Beeb” doesn’t rely on polarization as a business model.

The United States, still dealing with the aftermath of years of slanted information, should take note. What the country needs, it may be, is public-service news.

When the BBC—the United Kingdom’s own public-service news organization, which is legally obligated to neutrality—presented the summer 2020 figures, then BBC Director-General Tony Hall explained: “We are without question one of Britain’s strongest and best-known brands, synonymous with quality and accuracy worldwide.” Indeed, that is what its viewers are hungriest for.

One might assume that American viewers are just different. Perhaps they like drama, hyperbole, and confirmation more? Not so. According to a 2020 report by the University of Oxford’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, that isn’t necessarily true. Rather, 60 percent of Americans want neutral news. What’s more, 56 percent of Americans find the BBC trustworthy, which makes the BBC the most trusted non-local news organization in America. Americans are also now BBC News’s second-largest international audience, at nearly 50 million. Outside the United Kingdom, only India has more BBC viewers and listeners than the United States.

Polarizers get the headlines, but Americans aren’t so different from many other countries when it comes to wanting facts-based news.

The underlying economics that drive Fox News and upstarts such as One America News to cultivate and serve ideologically distinct audiences also drive MSNBC, CNN, and the New York Times. More and more fiercely, media outlets rally their audience behind the latest cause du jour, whether it’s battling supposed election fraud or abolishing local police departments.”

Myanmar Military Promise to Return Power After Free and Fair Election

Earlier in the day, reports suggested that the leader of Myanmar, as well as the country's president and other senior officials from the incumbent administration, had been detained after days of a looming threat of a coup stemming from a disagreement by the Myanmar military with the results of the general election.

Sean Turnell, an Australian academic who serves as an adviser to Aung San Suu Kyi, confirmed to the Financial Times the reports of the arrests and said that internet and mobile services in the capital were down.

"All the people in Naypyidaw have been cut off, so it looks like the reports about Aung San Suu Kyi and the president being detained appear to be true," Sean Turnell told the Financial Times from Yangon. "There has been no statement from the military yet."

According to NetBlocks, a non-governmental organisation that tracks internet shutdowns, there were serious disruptions in internet service in the early hours of Monday in Myanmar.

In January, Myanmar's military raised the prospect of a coup d'etat after what they believed was widespread voter fraud during the November 8 election, which was the country’s second general election since the end of military rule in 2011.

Hollywood Heavyweights, Including Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Among Top Donors to Lincoln Project

Several left-wing Hollywood heavyweights, including A-list actors Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston, and Dreamworks co-founder and Quibi CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, are among the top donors of the embattled Lincoln Project, the anti-Trump super PAC whose co-founder faces accusations of sending provocative messages to young men.

The organization, founded by anti-Trump Republicans, drew support from Democrats throughout the presidential election, with the shared objective of booting former President Trump out of office. Several celebrities contributed thousands to the organization, which now appears to be pleading ignorance following one of its co-founders, John Weaver, facing accusations from 21 men who say Weaver sent them sexually explicit messages, and even allegedly offered advice to some in exchange for sensual favors. One of the accusers claimed that Weaver sent him such messages when he was 14 years old.

An October report from the Hollywood Reporter detailed some of the celebrity bigwigs who contributed to The Lincoln Project. Those include Aniston, actor and FOX’s The Mask Singer and I Can See Your Voice host Ken Jeong, Ozark star Jason Bateman, and Transamerica actress Felicity Huffman, all of whom have donated thousands to the PAC:

But even among The Lincoln Project’s more rank-and-file donors, notable names from the world of Hollywood are present. Jennifer Aniston donated $5,000, Felicity Huffman donated $9,300, Ken Jeong donated $3,000 and Jason Bateman donated $6,000.

Meanwhile, executives, writers and directors have also helped to fill the PACs coffers, including AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron and MGM chairman Michael De Luca, who each donated $5,000, and Jumanji and Bad Teacher director Jake Kasdan who also donated $5,000.

According to FEC records, Bateman donated another $5,000 to the organization post-election.

At the time, the Hollywood Reporter identified Dreamworks co-founder David Geffen as a top contributor to the anti-Trump organization, donating at least $300,000 to the Lincoln Project. The most recent FEC data shows his contributions standing at $500,000.

Additionally, Dreamworks co-founder and Quibi CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has donated $100,000.

According to Forbes, other major donors include notable billionaires:

Sequoia venture capitalist Michael Moritz, another earlier donor, gave another $50,000 in July. Walmart heiress Christy Walton first gave to the group in January. She donated another $10,000 in July, bringing her total contributions to $40,000. The Lincoln Project raised $39.4 million between July and September, according to filings. At least 3% of that came from billionaires. In total, the Lincoln Project has raised $58 million this year.

“The PACs biggest individual donor is businessman and oil heir Gordon Getty, who contributed $1 million,” according to the outlet.

Actress Debra Messing and anti-Trump filmmaker Rob Reiner were some of Hollywood’s biggest promoters of the Lincoln Project on social media, with the New Yorker specifically identifying Reiner as a donor. FEC data shows Reiner donating $10,000 to the organization in June 2020.

In a Sunday statement, the Lincoln Project expressed outrage toward Weaver, contending that he “led a secret life that was built on a foundation of deception at every level.”

“He is a predator, a liar, and an abuser,” the PAC stated.

However, suspicions span all the way back to 2004 but were dismissed.

This toddler is more than likely related to a large group of suspected Haitian Nationals that illegally entered the United States on that same day.

A spokesperson with the Border Patrol in Del Rio confirmed the entry and arrest of more than 100 migrants Monday morning.

Sinking ship: Three cofounders cut ties before John Weaver allegations came to light

The Lincoln Project looks an awful lot like the Trump administration these days. The controversial Super PAC, ostensibly dedicated to restoring decency in American politics, is struggling to contain the fallout of a disturbing sex scandal as a growing number of founding members seek to distance themselves from the group.

After refusing for weeks to acknowledge credible allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct against cofounder John Weaver, senior Lincoln Project officials finally weighed in on the scandal over the weekend in response to a New York Times report on Weaver's predatory behavior. The report detailed efforts to solicit boys as young as 14 and Weaver's explicit offers of "advice, counsel, [and] help with bills" in exchange for sex.

The Lincoln Project's first substantive response to the allegations, issued two weeks after Weaver admitted to having "inappropriate" sexual conversations with young men, utilized some of Donald Trump's favorite tactics for weathering scandals, such as throwing a former ally under the bus, playing the victim, and denying everything with maximum indignation.

"[John Weaver] is a predator, a liar, and an abuser," the Lincoln Project said in a statement. "Like so many, we have been betrayed and deceived by John Weaver. We are grateful beyond words that at no time was John Weaver in the physical presence of any member of the Lincoln Project."

Lincoln Project senior adviser Jeff Timmer promoted the group's statement on Twitter, while adding some commentary of his own. "All you trolls: Read this. Then fuck off," he wrote.

Steve Schmidt, the Lincoln Project cofounder whose signature political achievement was convincing John McCain to choose Sarah Palin as a running mate in 2008, told the Times that he and his colleagues had heard "chatter" regarding Weaver's relationships with young men but denied any knowledge of "inappropriate behavior."

Informed observers were quick to call BS on the Lincoln Project's assertion of ignorance. Journalist Ryan Girdusky, who published one of the first detailed accounts of the allegations against Weaver, insisted that Lincoln Project officials "absolutely knew" about Weaver's "predatory behavior."

"EVERYONE knew for years what John was about," wrote journalist Yashar Ali. "The challenge was the young men wouldn’t talk to reporters even on background (which I understand, they feared retaliation). But this was no secret. Everyone talked about it."

Allegations that Weaver, who has a wife and children, has behaved inappropriately around young men date back decades. A New Republic profile of Republican strategist Karl Rove published in 2009 mentions that Rove "spread a rumor" in the 1980s about Weaver's behavior in an apparent effort to take down a rival GOP operative.

The U.S. Space Force finally has an official rank structure for its enlisted members and officers, a service spokesman has confirmed to Military.com.

A leaked memo first posted on the popular Facebook page Amn/Nco/Snco detailed the new ranks, which nearly mirror Air Force ranks.

Instead of "airman," junior enlisted members between E-1 and E-4 will be called specialists, according to the document. The Army is the other service with a specialist rank, for troops in the E-4 paygrade.

While the Air Force has staff and technical sergeants, the Space Force E-5 rank will be known as sergeant, followed by technical sergeant for E-6. Officer ranks second lieutenant to general will remain the same as its sister service.

The new rank structure takes effect Feb. 1, the memo states.

The most senior member is the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, an E-9 rank, the memo adds. Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, the senior enlisted adviser to the service, will officially assume that title effective next week, the spokesman said.

There will be no changes to benefits entitlements, according to the memo.

Some speculated that the Space Force, which is part of the Department of the Air Force, would adopt its parent service's rank structure; others argued for using the Navy's rank system – which is what some lawmakers intended.

In July, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, proposed an amendment in the fiscal 2021 National Defense Authorization Act requiring "the same system and rank structure as is used in the Navy" for the Space Force, according to a House summary of the text.

Space Force officials said they were ready to move forward, but because of the measure, the service halted announcing its decision at that time.

A Navy rank system would make sense for the Space Force, experts have said. Other space enthusiasts have noted on social media that "Space Admiral just sounds better."

"A good reason to use Navy ranks in the Space Force is to better distinguish [Space Force] personnel from Air Force personnel, kind of like [the Marine Corps] using different ranks than the Navy," Todd Harrison, director of the Aerospace Security Project at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, said in July following Crenshaw's proposal.

But last month, lawmakers ultimately ditched Crenshaw’s provision on naval ranks.

Even William Shatner the actor who portrayed Capt. James Kirk of the USS Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" series initially backed Crenshaw's idea.

In an op-ed titled, "What the heck is wrong with you, Space Force?" published in Military Times in August 2020, Shatner said there is historical precedence in the entertainment industry, anyway for space commanding officers to take naval ranks.

"When you unveiled the Space Force logo, many immediately saw it as an homage to 'Star Trek' (even though our Delta was an homage to the previous military space insignias). Why not borrow back from 'Star Trek' and adopt our ranks as well?" he wrote. "We took them from the Navy for good reason."

While its rank structure seems to be set, the Space Force still lacks an official dress uniform, physical fitness uniform and mess dress uniform; an official song; patch and insignia wear.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui has threatened Griffin with contempt of court if he does not start abiding by the rules, KVIA reported Sunday.

“On January 17, 2021, law enforcement arrested the defendant. The defendant refused to take a COVID-19 test upon his admission to the jail. Doing so forced authorities to place the defendant in 14-day isolation to protect the prison population and staff from the risk of exposure,” Faruqui wrote in an order.

The judge said things got no better four days later.

“Jail staff provided the defendant with a headset to participate in this hearing remotely. The defendant refused to participate in the hearing and stated on the record that he did not wish to speak with the judge,” Faruqui wrote in the order.

“On January 25, 2021, an attorney for the D.C. jail informed the Court that they attempted to set up a call with the defendant and Mr. Smith that day,” the judge said, referring to court-appointed attorney David Smith. “During the call, the defendant refused to speak to Mr. Smith. The defendant then yelled at the officer who attempted to assist with the call and began banging on his cell door.”

The Hedge Funds Circle Back

White House press secretary Jen Psaki taunted populist GameStop investors at her briefing Monday, stating that the Reddit-driven short squeeze propelling GameStop stock to new heights is “under the purview of the SEC.” Psaki also said that “congressional attention” should be paid to “market volatility,” and pledged the White House’s commitment to working with Congress on financial reforms.

The GameStop Revolution, powered by the Reddit community r/wallstreetbets, is costing Wall Street short sellers billions of dollars. The hedge fund Melvin Capital bet heavily against the beloved video-game retailer GameStop. Young men of all political persuasions were outraged, so they began investing in GameStop with record small-dollar purchases. By driving up the stock price of GameStop, the populists are hurting the hedge funders who were trying to drive the stock down. The maneuever is called a “short squeeze” and it has captured the American imagination.

Asked if the Biden White House is considering working with Congress on financial reforms including possibly increasing restrictions on short selling (something the financial class definitely does not want), Psaki looked frazzled. She made it clear that the White House is looking to the Securities and Exchange Commission to handle the matter.

“Obviously this is under the purview of the SEC in terms of their review and monitoring,” Psaki said.

The SEC has made it clear that it is looking to curtail what it calls potential “abusive activity” with regard to the GameStop revolution. Reviled hedge-fund loyalists are trying to make the case that outside investors on Reddit are somehow illegally manipulating the market. But r/wallstreetbets is not afraid of the SEC, telling the regulatory agency to “eat a d-ck.”

Psaki also cited the need for “congressional attention” to the “market volatility” issue, without endorsing any kind of progressive solutions. Elizabeth Warren, who has billed herself as some kind of anti-Wall Street champion, is now showing her true colors, scrambling to run cover for hedge funds by urging the SEC to stop “market manipulation” and foil the Reddit bros.

Paul M. Abbate who headed the Detroit FBI from 2013 to 2015, has been named deputy director of the FBI – the #2 spot in the agency, just under Director Christopher Wray.

As deputy director, Abbate will oversees all FBI domestic and international investigative and intelligence activities. He was promoted from the job of associate deputy director at headquarters.

Abbate joined the FBI in 1996 and was assigned first assigned to the Criminal Division in the New York Field Office. He was also a member of the SWAT team.

In 2003, he was promoted to supervisory special agent and transferred to the Iraq Unit of the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters. He was deployed to Iraq in 2005 and served as the senior FBI liaison officer to the Department of Defense.

In 2006, he moved to the Newark Field Office, where he served on the Joint Terrorism Task Force. In 2008, he deployed to Afghanistan as the FBI’s deputy on-scene commander where he led FBI counterterrorism operations.

He returned to the Counterterrorism Division in 2009 as an assistant section chief, providing oversight of U.S.-based international terrorism investigations. The next year, he moved to the Los Angeles Field Office as the assistant special agent in charge of counterterrorism matters.

After several more moves, in 2013, he took over the Detroit FBI Office. A couple years later, he was promoted to head up the Washington Field Office. Near the end of 2016, he was appointed as the executive assistant director for the Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch at FBI Headquarters.

Two years later, he was named the FBI associate deputy director.

He replaces David Bowdich.
