Archbishop of Glasgow dies after catching coronavirus at Christmas

The Archbishop of Glasgow, Philip Tartaglia, has died after contracting coronavirus, the Catholic Church in Scotland has announced. The 70-year-old, who had served as leader of Scotland’s largest Catholic community since 2012, tested positive for Covid-19 shortly after Christmas and had been self-isolating at home. He died on Wednesday, January 13, the Feast of St Mungo – the patron saint of Glasgow. The cause of death is not yet clear.

The Pope’s Ambassador to Great Britain, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, has been informed of his death.

Philip Tartaglia was born in Glasgow on January 11, 1951, to parents Guido and Annita Trataglia and had three younger brothers and five younger sisters.

He went to primary school in Riddrie in Glasgow’s East End, and later worked in Dennistoun. The senior cleric also studied in Rome, and worked in Aberdeen and Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire.

Operation Warp Speed Chief Resigns At Biden’s Request — Will Stay For 30 Days To Assist In The Transition

Dr. Moncef Slaoui, the chief executive of the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed vaccine initiative, tendered his resignation Tuesday evening after being asked to do so by President-elect Joe Biden’s team.

Biden had heaped praise on Slaoui and the Warp Speed team for rapidly pushing two separate vaccines to market in record time, but in recent days, the president-elect has criticized the Trump administration’s distribution plan.

“I have submitted my resignation letter yesterday to the current administration thanking them for giving me the opportunity to help our country and our people as well as the people of the world,” Slaoui said Wednesday morning on CNBC. “I’m very supportive of this upcoming administration, and really of course, of the operation, and its mission, and I will be doing everything I can to help them succeed as part of the process.”

Slaoui then confirmed that Biden’s team had asked him to resign from his current post as “chief scientific adviser” and had allowed him to stay on for 30 days to assist with the transition process.

“I look forward to really helping the new team and continuing of course to work very hard and support the operation and the thousands who have participated through this effort and continue to succeed,” he continued.

Google reveals sophisticated Windows and Android hacking operation

The attackers used a combination of Android, Chrome, and Windows vulnerabilities, including both zero-days and n-days exploits.

Google published a six-part report today detailing a sophisticated hacking operation that the company detected in early 2020 and which targeted owners of both Android and Windows devices.

"One server targeted Windows users, the other targeted Android," Project Zero, one of Google's security teams, said in the first of six blog posts.

Google said that both exploit servers used Google Chrome vulnerabilities to gain an initial foothold on victim devices. Once an initial entry point was established in the user's browsers, attackers deployed an OS-level exploit to gain more control of the victim's devices.

The exploit chains included a combination of both zero-day and n-day vulnerabilities, where zero-day refers to bugs unknown to the software makers, and n-day refers to bugs that have been patched but are still being exploited in the wild.

All in all, Google said the exploit servers contained:

Four "renderer" bugs in Google Chrome, one of which was still a 0-day at the time of its discovery.

Two sandbox escape exploits abusing three 0-day vulnerabilities in the Windows OS.

And a "privilege escalation kit" composed of publicly known n-day exploits for older versions of the Android OS.

The four zero-days, all of which were patched in the spring of 2020, were as follows:

CVE-2020-6418 - Chrome Vulnerability in TurboFan (fixed February 2020)

CVE-2020-0938 - Font Vulnerability on Windows (fixed April 2020)

CVE-2020-1020 - Font Vulnerability on Windows (fixed April 2020)

CVE-2020-1027 - Windows CSRSS Vulnerability (fixed April 2020)

Google said that while they did not find any evidence of Android zero-day exploits hosted on the exploit servers, its security researchers believe that the threat actor most likely had access to Android zero-days as well, but most likely weren't hosting them on the servers when its researchers discovered it.

Google: Exploit chains were complex and well-engineered

Overall, Google described the exploit chains as "designed for efficiency & flexibility through their modularity."

"They are well-engineered, complex code with a variety of novel exploitation methods, mature logging, sophisticated and calculated post-exploitation techniques, and high volumes of anti-analysis and targeting checks," Google said.

"We believe that teams of experts have designed and developed these exploit chains," but Google stopped short of providing any other details about the attackers or the type of victims they targeted.

America is set to present dramatic new evidence that the virus leaked from a Wuhan lab – in the final act of the Trump administration.

Senior officials in Washington say that outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to make a ‘bombshell intervention’.

They say he will reveal evidence that SARS-CoV-2 did not leap naturally from bats, pangolins or other species to humans.

Instead he will claim it was cultured by scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology – where Chinese and foreign experts have warned of poor bio-security for years.

British Foreign Office and security sources confirmed they were expecting the claims from Washington but dismissed them in advance, saying ‘all the credible scientific evidence does not point to a leak from the laboratory’.

They said this view was backed up intelligence agencies on both sides of the Atlantic, adding: ‘The established view of the US intelligence community suggests the pandemic was natural in origin.’

Yesterday Boris Johnson backed the theory the virus first infected humans at the Wuhan wet market, where pangolins were among the live species on offer.

But Mr Pompeo is also set to cite close links between the Institute and the People’s Liberation Army.

He will point out its highest security section has always had a ‘dual use’ military and civilian purpose.

He is also expected to accuse the World Health Organisation of assisting in a Chinese cover-up by refusing to probe the lab’s possible role.

Its ten-person team tasked with investigating the pandemic’s origins will arrive in Wuhan tomorrow – but there is no mention of the lab in its official terms of reference.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis said it was ‘vital’ the WHO team probe the institute as the possible origin of the pandemic.

He said: ‘We don’t know whether this virus was natural or artificially created, and if it came from the lab, whether this was an accident or deliberate. It would be immoral and foolish to allow any sort of cover-up

The vast majority of Trump supporters and Republicans in battleground states are less likely to vote for a member of Congress who votes in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump, a January 12 memo from the pollster John McLaughlin of McLaughlin & Associates found.

The memo, addressed to Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller, provided a slate of findings based on the opinions of 800 voters in battleground states taken January 10-11. States include Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

According to the survey, 60 percent of battleground voters view the Democrats’ second impeachment effort as a waste of time. Moreover, 80 percent of Trump voters and 76 percent of Republicans indicated that they are less likely to vote for a member of Congress who votes in favor of impeaching Trump — a finding that comes as the House gathers Wednesday to vote on impeaching him yet again, accusing him of inciting the violence that occurred at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. More broadly, among all voters surveyed, 48 percent say they are “less likely” to vote for a member of Congress who votes to impeach Trump.

Speaking on the House floor on Wednesday, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), chair of the House Rules Committee, told his colleagues that Trump effectively “organized” and “incited” the protests that occurred despite the fact that the commander-in-chief repeatedly called for peace and never once instructed or encouraged supporters to engage in lawless acts.

Overall, the survey showed that impeaching Trump in the final days of his presidency is widely unpopular. Nearly three-quarters of all voters “agree that efforts by Pelosi and the Democrats to try to impeach the President after [President-elect] Joe Biden is sworn in would be politically motivated to prevent the President from running again, stripping his Secret Service protection, and preventing him from having a Presidential Library,” per the memo.

A majority of voters, 65 percent, say Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are “making this worse and keeping the country divided” by continuing to attack Trump.

At least five GOP lawmakers have publicly expressed their support for impeachment, including Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), John Katko (R-NY), Fred Upton (R-MI), Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), and Liz Cheney (R-WY).

Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) filings from the Department of Justice (DoJ) show that nearly every mainstream media outlet in the West has been broadcasting “favorable coverage” of communist China in exchange for “private dinners” and “sponsored trips.”

The China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF), which is funded by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has maintained a close relationship with media outlets like CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post, which continue to “disseminate positive messages” about China in exchange for the gifts they receive from the communist Chinese regime.

Other mainstream media outlets on the dole from China include MSNBC, Forbes, the Financial Times, Reuters, Bloomberg, ABC News, the Economist, The Wall Street Journal, TIME magazine, the Los Angeles Times, AFP, The Hill, The Atlantic and BBC.

CUSEF also targets American colleges and universities with offers of funding for policy research, high-level dialogues and exchange programs, so long as these institutions do the bidding of China and cast the communist country in a positive light.

A report from the United States government explains that the goal of CUSEF and other associated people and groups is “to co-opt and neutralize sources of potential opposition to the policies and authority of its ruling Chinese Communist Party.”

“The United Front strategy uses a range of methods to influence overseas Chinese communities, foreign governments, and other actors to take actions or adopt positions supportive of Beijing’s preferred policies,” it further adds.

After forging an agreement with the American lobbying firm BLJ many moons ago, CUSEF set out to “effectively disseminate positive messages to the media, key influencers and opinion leaders, and the general public” about China and the CCP.

With BLJ’s help, CUSEF has been providing journalists and journalism students with “familiarization trips” to China, which involve plenty of wine and dine experiences that propagate the illusion that communist China is a great place to be run by great people.

The COVID pandemic has caused the gap between the ultra-wealthy and the rest of us to grow larger than it ever has been before. Thanks to the hyperinflationary policies of the Federal Reserve and our politicians in Washington, stock prices have soared to unprecedented heights in recent months. This pushed the wealth of the uber-rich to dizzying heights, but for the rest of the country 2020 was an unmitigated nightmare.

As I have discussed previously, one survey found that 2020 was a “personal financial disaster” for 55 percent of all Americans. More than 110,000 restaurants shut down permanently last year, Americans filed more than 70 million claims for unemployment benefits, and tens of millions are potentially facing eviction in 2021. But even though we are mired in the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s, those at the very top of the economic pyramid are laughing all the way to the bank.

I certainly don’t have any problem with people gaining wealth by working extremely hard and making society a better place in the process.

But most of the people at the very top of the economic pyramid only increased their wealth in 2020 because the powers that be decided to open up the firehoses and rain obscene amounts of money on them.

That isn’t right.

As a result of the deeply flawed policies that were implemented because of the COVID pandemic, the gap between “gains in financial assets and the health of the economy” was the largest ever recorded last year…

But as stock market indexes staged a huge rebound from the lows seen in March when the pandemic first hit, the gap between the wealthy and the poor extended an already widening trend to historic proportions.

A report via BofA Global Research published on Friday notes that a measure of the differential between gains in financial assets and the health of the economy hit a record at 6.3X in 2020.

My regular readers are probably sick and tired of hearing me say that the stock market has become completely divorced from economic reality, and now we have a hard number which backs up what I have been saying all along.

Secret Chat Reveals BLM Activist’s Violent Intent and Trump Supporter Disguise at Capitol

John Sullivan aka ‪Jayden X was among those who breached the US Capitol on Jan 6th. He is an activist allying BLM & Antifa as the founder of Insurgence USA. He was arrested July of 2020 in Utah on charges of rioting, making a threat of violence and criminal mischief after organizing a protest at which an elderly man was shot.

John’s organization openly advocates for revolution and he previously made threats toward the Capitol and President Trump, while speaking at an event in DC.

In the Aug 28, 2020 video he says, “We f**ing about to burn this s* down… We got to defend ourselves because power to the people… We got to fing rip Trump out of that office right there, fing pull him out that s*… Nah, nah. We ain’t about… waiting until the next election we about to get that mother f***er.”

In video he posted of the Jan 9 Capitol breaching, titled “Shooting and Storming Of The US Capitol In Washington DC” this same threatening rhetoric is heard. He says “we gotta burn this, we gotta burn this down.”

When protestors instruct each other NOT to deface the statues, John responds “well, people might burn this down, I’m not gonna lie, it might be too late for that.”

His video captures himself making “rip him out of there” threats toward President Trump, mirroring his prior threats.

John claims and the media reports that he “was just there to film” on the Jan 6th Capitol breach but that doesn’t match his words and actions both shown on the videos he has uploaded to his “JaydenX” YouTube account nor the messages we have received that he and other comrades posted in his chat group.

Dems Move to End Federal Death Penalty

More than 70 House and Senate Democrats announced Tuesday that they will reintroduce a bill ending the federal death penalty, enacting one of President-elect Joe Biden's campaign promises.

Spearheaded by incoming Senate majority whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) and democratic socialist congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), the bill would prohibit a sentence of death for any federal offender and require the resentencing of the 55 individuals currently on federal death row.

The move comes in reaction to the scheduled executions of three federal offenders later this week (one was stayed late Monday evening with an appeal pending to the Supreme Court), part of President Donald Trump's first-in-decades slate of executions begun in July.

"There are three lives that hang in the balance this week alone," Pressley told NPR. "And this is why we reintroduced this bill this week and are urging Congress to act immediately to pass it. State-sanctioned murder is not justice."

But it also follows Biden's call during the 2020 campaign to end the death penalty through legislation, making him the first president elected in the modern era who openly supports ending capital punishment. That makes the new bill a sign that Democrats see the death penalty as part of their agenda in the new term, a move likely to spark a heated national debate over the age-old punishment.

In addition to Durbin and Pressley, the bill has the backing of 10 senators and more than 60 members of the House. The list of backers is a who's who of congressional progressives, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Ed Markey (Mass.), Cory Booker (N.J.), and Mazie Hirono (Hawaii), as well as "Squad" members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), and newly elected Cori Bush (Mo.) and Jamaal Bowman (N.Y.).

There has been an "active conversation" with the incoming administration about the legislation, Pressley told NPR. She indicated that she would also like to see a unilateral moratorium on executions from the Biden White House, in advance of legislative abolition.

The Biden transition team has been publicly silent on its plans with regards to the death penalty. Transition press secretary T.J. Ducklo told the Associated Press that Biden "opposes the death penalty now and in the future," but declined to comment further.

Gregory Michael Death Investigation: Pfizer Gives Update On COVID Vaccine Safety

Pfizer said it has started an investigation into the death of Gregory Michael, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Miami's Mount Sinai Medical Center, after he received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Michael, 56, who developed the rare blood disorder thrombocytopenia after receiving the COVID vaccine, had his medical condition documented by his wife, Heidi Neckelmann, in a Facebook post on Jan. 5. He died on Jan. 3 after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Michael died just 16 days after receiving the first dose of the COVID vaccine on Dec. 18, which Neckelmann claimed caused his death. In her Facebook post, she said he died “due to a strong reaction to the COVID vaccine.”

Pfizer released a statement to Bloomberg on Tuesday that said the evidence gathered so far doesn’t suggest a connection to the vaccine.

It told the news outlet that its clinical trials and data since the vaccine was authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in its initial conclusion of evidence "doesn’t suggest a causal association to the vaccine."

“To date, millions of people have been vaccinated and we are closely monitoring all adverse events in individuals receiving our vaccine," Pfizer said. "It is important to note that serious adverse events, including deaths that are unrelated to the vaccine, are unfortunately likely to occur at a similar rate as they would in the general population.”

In one of the most desperate and bizarre moves yet, a local government in the UK has begun recruiting men to walking the streets with TVs strapped over their heads, supposedly to help police during a highly unpopular lockdown.

Bradford Council in Yorkshire announced their new ‘iWalkers’ scheme, where local council saw staff and volunteers are deployed onto the streets with a 19-inch screen weighing 18 lbs, mounted on their shoulders.

According to reports, the program ran for two days before it began to go horribly wrong. The government scheme was so ridiculous, residents thought it might have been satire at first, or a prank, not believing that the local government had lost the plot to such a degree. When they realized the plan was actually a real government initiative, the public backlash was severe; embarrassed council officials panicked and removed their Facebook post detailing their ‘exciting new program.’

A number of outrageous comments, both in person and online, were hurled at the walking Robocop-like human propaganda digital billboards.

These real-life Teletubbies were supposed to be walking the city and town streets, wearing masks, while their TVs would be pushing out government propaganda on COVID – designed by government behavioural insights team and applied behavioural psychologists – to nudge residents into tighter lockdown compliance, and to keep the public abreast of minute-to-minute ever-changing “coronavirus rules and restrictions.”

According to reports, the cost of Bradford’s COVID Teletubbies is being paid for through government funding of “Covid-19 communications.”

Local government officials denied they had deleted their new initiative because of public embarrassment, and instead claimed it was suddenly taken down because of public comments that supposedly “crossed the line into abuse of people who are working hard to help residents and workers in Bradford District stay safe and stop the spread of the virus.”

In Italy’s southern region of Calabria, a court had to requisition a local call centre to make room for 355 defendants, 900 witnesses and 700 lawyers in what will be the largest mafia trial the country had seen has seen in nearly three decades, AFP reported.

“The Mancuso are one the biggest players in the ‘Ndrangheta,” Sergio Nazzaro, an Italian journalist, writer and adviser to the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, told OCCRP on Wednesday. “They are extremely violent, ruthless and have deep connections to all the worlds of power that they can corrupt.”

The proceedings recall famous ‘maxi trials’ of the 1980s and early 90s, which took on 475 members, including 19 bosses, of the Sicilian mafia, Cosa Nostra, and brought to heel the infamous Corleonesi clan which had controlled the island.

However, it also kicked off an unprecedented period of mafia-sponsored terror, culminating in the assassination of prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.

Though the ‘Ndrangheta’s history stretches back as far as the Napoleonic age, it outpaced its Sicilian counterparts as Italy's most powerful criminal group.in the 1990s.

Engaged in everything from narcotics to arms trafficking, prostitution, extortion and tender fraud, the Calabrian syndicate’s activities are believed to account for 5% of Italy’s total GDP, despite being based out of one of the country’s poorest regions.

Among the 355 defendants whose trial started on Wednesday are the family’s boss, Luigi Mancuso, known as "The Uncle,'' who has already spent two decades in prison. His associates on the stand bear similarly colorful nicknames like "The Wolf", "Fatty", "Sweetie", "Blondie", "Little Goat", and "The Wringer".

Most of the defendants were picked up in a series of raids carried out by Italian police in December 2019. In addition to the 355 on trial today, another 90 have already been tried separately.

While several of the defendents are accused of murder, it isn’t just hardened street thugs facing trial: among them is former parliamentarian Giancarlo Pittelli, a defence lawyer and ex-senator from former premier Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party.

“It’s not just a trial about who killed who, who was a loan shark to whom and so on,” said Sergio Nazarro. “It’s a trial against the full power of ‘Ndrangheta. All of their connections, to politics, businesses, law enforcement and the justice system. The entire ‘Ndrangheta world is on trial today.”

Heading the prosecution will be Nicola Gratteri, a 62-year-old native of Calabria who has lived under police protection since his mid-30s due to his work as an anti-mafia prosecutor.

Gratteri grew up rubbing shoulders with many of the defendants on trial today. "I spent my childhood in Calabria, at a time when dozens and dozens of people were killed,” he told Sky News.

“Outside school, I would see the children of the mafia bosses who behaved like 'little mafiosetti,”

he added. "Having gone to school with people that subsequently I had to arrest and convict as an adult is something that marks. It is unpleasant, but it is our job."

Nazzaro knows Gratteri personally, and says he has become something of a folk hero in Italy.

“‘Ndrangheta fears Gratteri because they know they can not corrupt a man like that,” Nazzaro told OCCRP.

McConnell Will Not Consent to Reconvening Immediately or Before 19 Jan. to Consider Impeaching Trump

Despite the House having gathered to vote on an impeachment article against President Donald Trump over his alleged involvement in the 6 January storming of the US Capitol, the Senate is not scheduled to reconvene until Joe Biden is inaugurated and Trump is out of office.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is not planning to convene the Senate on 15 January and "almost certainly" not on any date prior to 19 January, his spokesperson Doug Andres has confirmed on Twitter. McConnell's office notified Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of the Republican senator's decision.

The response came as the House gathered on 13 January to vote on an article of impeachment against US President Donald Trump accusing him of "inciting insurrection". The Democratic leaders who initiated the impeachment said they are ready to deliver the article to the Senate this week, but without McConnell's consent, they have little chance of convicting Donald Trump before he is out of office.

Update (1208 ET): Moments ago, Acting Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said the National Guard is boosting the numbers of guardsmen around the Capitol complex to more than 20,000.

"With respect to the National Guard, those numbers, the final numbers - because this has been designated as a national special security event, the final numbers will be provided from the United States Secret Service," Contee told reporters. "I think you can expect to see somewhere upwards beyond 20,000 members of the National Guard that will be here in the footprint of the District of Columbia." he said.

This is a substantial increase from over the weekend when 6,000 were deployed. The number was increased to a total of 15,000 on Monday.

Now, more than 20,000 guardsmen are expected to be armed and patrolling the Capitol grounds. It makes us wonder how large is the threat ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on Jan 20.

Last week, the Associated Press, citing the Secretary of the Army, said National Guard troops in the Washington Metropolitan Area, especially around the Capitol complex, could carry assault rifles and pistols though the decision was under review.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told The AP Friday that the military could let guardsmen carry M-4 rifles or 9 mm Berettas in a few days.

As we come to find out, on Wednesday morning, CNN's Josh Replogle reports that "racks upon racks of rifles and pistols" were unloaded from military vehicles and distributed to troops.

As if there wasn't enough chaos in the world.

Yesterday we reported that under the leadership of the ECB's QE Premier Giuseppe Conte, Italy's government has - or rather had - enjoyed a degree of stability unseen in decades, as the technocratic former law professor - initially brought in to lead a government formed by two anti-establishment parties, the anti-migrant League and left-wing populist Five Star Movement - had already survived the collapse of his original coalition. When League leader Matteo Salvini withdrew from the ruling coalition back in 2019, Conte managed to stave off another election by recruiting new allies from the opposition.

Since then, Conte has led Italy through two COVID-19 lockdowns, and as the country lumbers forward, with much of its economy still paralyzed, the PM has his work cut out for him if he wants to get the country's debt burden under control without resorting to punishing austerity measures (which, at this point, would probably spark a full-tilt revolution in the streets of Italy's largest cities).

But as Italy staggers out of another COVID-19-induced-lockdown, the ruling coalition is once again at the point of fracture. After Salvini quit the ruling coalition back in the summer of 2019, Conte struck a deal with Matteo Renzi, the former prime minister, who later broke off from the Democrats and formed his own centrist group.

On Tuesday, now that Italy has finally received the €196 billion-euro ($240 billion) windfall from the European Union COVID bailout package, Italy's parliament must vote on how to spend the money. But since nothing is ever easy in Italy's politically fragmented government, disagreements over spending priorities prompted Matteo Renzi, Italy's extremely unpopular former prime minister and junior partner in the coalition, to consider abandoning the government, and thrusting it into chaos just as the relief package is being finalized.

Moments ago, Renzi did just that, when the small but critical junior coalition partner pulled his ministers, putting the fate of Italy’s governing coalition in jeopardy. While the news isn’t a complete surprise, Conte had been making conciliatory noises and the market largely ignored yesterday's news of just this eventuality. Still, Italian bond yields had spiked in recent days in anticipation of the government possibly falling, but as Bloomberg notes "it’s probably not fully priced in yet."

HSBC has issued a warning to customers as retailers step up coronavirus safety measures amid a further 1,243 deaths. The lender – which also owns First Direct and Marks & Spencer bank – said customers who break the law could forfeit their bank account.

Speaking to The Mirror, a spokesman said face masks are mandatory in all branches as per government guidelines.

Those who refuse to comply will be refused service and could have their bank accounts withdrawn.

Jackie Uhi, head of branch network, HSBC UK said: “Our branch colleagues are key workers, continuing to go to work in our branches every day so that customers who need them can access essential financial services.

“Sadly, some people are failing to protect themselves, our branch colleagues and other customers by refusing to wear a face covering inside our branches or observe social distancing.

“Our colleagues deserve respect and should not have to face violent or abusive behaviour. Consider whether you need to visit the branch or could manage your banking from the safety of your home via our digital channels.

“If you do visit us, please wear a face covering and maintain a safe distance from others. If individuals put themselves or our colleagues at risk, without a medical exemption, we reserve the right to withdraw their account”

The Mirror has also asked Santander, Barclays, Lloyds, Natwest and Nationwide for updated guidance and will update this story in due course.

The Post Office said customers must obey the law, but warned it will not be enforcing measures.

“Postmasters that they can ask a customer who is not wearing a facemask if they are medically exempt, but the customer is not required to provide medical proof if they do not have it with them when they visit a branch,” a spokesman said.

“Post Office will implement any updated guidance issued by the UK Government or Devolved Governments. At this stage, Post Office has not advised Postmasters to refuse entry to any customer that does not have a face mask.

NBC’s John Heilemann said Wednesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney were leading the charge to “strike at the fallen king.”

Heilemann told MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough that both McConnell and Cheney were making political calculations as to how they could retain they positions and build a stronger base moving forward, and their assessment appeared to be that the best way to do that was without President Donald Trump.

Heilemann said that McConnell and Cheney had “set in motion one of the fastest moving, most unpredictable political dynamics” he had ever seen — Cheney in a very public statements saying that she would vote to impeach and McConnell, through less direct channels, suggesting he also believed Trump to be guilty of impeachable offenses.

“That’s Mitch McConnell saying I’m done with Donald Trump,” Heilemann noted, arguing that at least in McConnell’s case, it was likely a move to propel himself back into power.

The media buried long-standing scientific concerns that Anthony Fauci had been ‘sucking money away from work to understand and counter natural disease outbreaks.’

In 2003, terrorism was a more immediate national danger than infectious diseases. Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) had just redirected $117 million from infectious diseases to fund a new anthrax vaccine effort in response to the anthrax attacks that happened a week after 9/11.

The millions were just a small part of the $1.8 billion Fauci had poured into defense from bioterrorist attacks over the preceding two years. More than half of those funds were devoted to anthrax and smallpox alone. In 2004, Fauci launched the $5.6 billion “Project Bioshield,” the National Institutes of Health’s biggest outlay for a single research issue until then.

Some microbiology researchers at the time, however, according to the journal Nature, were concerned that Fauci’s actions would ultimately “distort priorities in infectious-disease research, sucking money away from work to understand and counter natural disease outbreaks that ultimately pose a greater threat to public health.” The 2003 Nature article cited a Stanford University microbiologist saying “that diseases such as influenza and other respiratory-tract infections routinely kill far more people than would die in a bioterrorist attack, and therefore deserve a greater share of the NIAID budget.”

The criticism turned out to be warranted. In 2007, after spending billions under the opposite premise, Fauci admitted that “at the end of the day, you’re not going to kill as many people [with an anthrax attack] as you would if you blasted off a couple of car bombs in Times Square.” His anthrax vaccine effort had failed, having been “sunk by lobbying.”

The anthrax vaccine failure followed on the heels of Fauci’s controversial leadership of the nation’s AIDS response in the 1980s and ‘90s. According to “Good Intentions,” a 1990 book by investigative author and innovation expert Bruce Nussbaum, Fauci started his career as “a lackluster scientist,” who “found his true vocation—empire building” when he took the reins at NIAID in 1984.

To ensure that AIDS would be his exclusive demesne within the federal government, Fauci “started the most important bureaucratic battle in the history of the fight against AIDS,” squeezing out more scientifically competent, but less conniving administrators. According to Nussbaum, if Fauci had not won the battle, “many people who died might have lived.”

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D., N.J.) has gone public with an extraordinary allegation against some of her colleagues that they conducted secret surveillance in a conspiracy with rioters at the Capitol. If true, those members could be criminally charged and expelled from the House. Conversely, if Sherrill has no such evidence, she could (and should) face a resolution of censure or resolution.

Sherrill said in a Tuesday night Facebook live address to her constituents that she witnessed the surveillance personally.

She said unidentified members of Congress “had groups coming through the Capitol” in “a reconnaissance for the next day.”

Sherrill pledged to see those lawmakers “are held accountable, and if necessary, ensure that they don’t serve in Congress.”

That is an unambiguous allegation of criminal conduct against colleagues.

Once she names a member, she could also be the subject of a defamation action.

This was a statement made off of the floor and not protected under the Speech and Debate Clause.

It is coming from a member who was a former Navy pilot and a federal prosecutor.

Article I, Section 5, the Constitution says, “Each House (of Congress) may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member.” The House may discipline members for violations of both unlawful conduct as well as any conduct which the House of Representatives finds has reflected discredit upon the institution. In re Chapman, 166 U.S. 661, 669-670 (1897). A House Select Committee in 1967 stated:

Censure of a Member has been deemed appropriate in cases of a breach of the privileges of the House. There are two classes of privilege, the one, affecting the rights of the House collectively, its safety, dignity, and the integrity of its proceedings; and the other, affecting the rights, reputation, and conduct of Members, individually. Most cases of censure have involved the use of unparliamentary language, assaults upon a Member or insults to the House by introductions of offensive resolutions, but in five cases in the House and one in the Senate [as of 1967] censure was based on corrupt acts by a Member, and in another Senate case censure was based upon noncooperation with and abuse of Senate committees.

Censure or reprimand is not the only possible response if this allegation is found to be without basis. The standard for defamation for public figures and officials in the United States is the product of a decision decades ago in New York Times v. Sullivan. The Supreme Court ruled that tort law could not be used to overcome First Amendment protections for free speech or the free press. The Court sought to create “breathing space” for the media by articulating that standard that now applies to both public officials and public figures. In order to prevail, they must show actual knowledge or reckless disregard of the alleged falsity. Obviously, truth remains a defense. Under Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U.S. 323, 352 (1974) and its progeny of cases, the Supreme Court has held that public figure status applies when someone “thrust[s] himself into the vortex of [the] public issue [and] engage[s] the public’s attention in an attempt to influence its outcome.”

Thus far, Sherrill has not named names but pledged to seek accountability. The question is whether she will now identify members who she has accused of a criminal conspiracy.

Indeed, one would think that she would have already gone to the FBI and filed a criminal complaint. Absent naming the members, any defamation action would have to be based on the highly difficult basis for a group libel claim of all Republican members. Such an action would be highly unlikely to succeed. In Neiman-Marcus v. Lait (1952), a New York federal district court addressed a defamation claim arising from the publication of the book “U.S.A. Confidential.” The author wrote that “some” models and “all” saleswomen at the Neiman-Marcus department store in Dallas were “call girls.” It also claimed that “most” of the salesmen in the men’s store were “faggots.” The store had nine models, 382 saleswomen and 25 salesmen. The court found the size of the group of women was too big to satisfy a group libel standard. However, the size of the group of salesmen was viewed as sufficiently small to go to trial.

The ultra-provocative high level US delegation that was expected to arrive in Taiwan this week has been canceled amid Tuesday's last minute announcement by Trump's State Department to cancel all travel, including Pompeo's trip to Brussels where he was to meet with EU leaders.

When Craft's trip was first announced last week, Beijing blasted the move as a "crazy provocation" for which the United States would pay a "heavy price" should it move forward with sending the high ranking ambassador to Taipei. But with the trip called off now with a mere week to go till the presidential transition, it appears the crisis has been averted. It was only on Saturday too that Mike Pompeo declared he would lift prior decades-long restrictions on contacts been American officials and their Taiwanese counterparts in what appeared major first efforts at rolling back the 'One-China' policy.

According to sources cited in Bloomberg, the administration has been increasingly worried about a potentially worsened security situation for its delegations abroad given last week's mayhem and crisis on Capitol Hill:

With 10s of 1000s of National Guard troops deploying to Washington D.C., President Trump urged the American public on Wednesday to refrain from violence ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration, again calling for a peaceful transition of power. Unable to transmit his statement through any form of social media, President Trump asked Fox News to publish the following short comment:

A Trump adviser told Fox News the statement will go out as an email from the White House press office. The White House will then attempt to post the statement to all of Trump’s official social media accounts.

Additionally, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel released the following statement:

"Violence has no place in our politics. Period. I wholly condemned last week's senseless acts of violence, and I strongly reiterate the calls to remain peaceful in the weeks ahead.

Those who partook in the assault on our nation's Capitol and those who continue to threaten violence should be found, held accountable, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Let me be clear: Anyone who has malicious intent is not welcome in Washington, D.C. or in any other state capitol.

The peaceful transition of power is one of our nation's founding principles and is necessary for our country to move forward. Now is the time to come together as one nation, united in the peaceful pursuit of our common democratic purpose."

Given the hyperbole on display in the House during the impeachment debate, we highly doubt these calls for unity will go far.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D., N.J.) has gone public with an extraordinary allegation against some of her colleagues that they conducted secret surveillance in a conspiracy with rioters at the Capitol. If true, those members could be criminally charged and expelled from the House. Conversely, if Sherrill has no such evidence, she could (and should) face a resolution of censure or resolution.

Sherrill said in a Tuesday night Facebook live address to her constituents that she witnessed the surveillance personally. She said unidentified members of Congress “had groups coming through the Capitol” in “a reconnaissance for the next day.” Sherrill pledged to see those lawmakers “are held accountable, and if necessary, ensure that they don’t serve in Congress.”

That is an unambiguous allegation of criminal conduct against colleagues. Once she names a member, she could also be the subject of a defamation action. This was a statement made off of the floor and not protected under the Speech and Debate Clause. It is coming from a member who was a former Navy pilot and a federal prosecutor.

Article I, Section 5, the Constitution says, “Each House (of Congress) may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member.” The House may discipline members for violations of both unlawful conduct as well as any conduct which the House of Representatives finds has reflected discredit upon the institution. In re Chapman, 166 U.S. 661, 669-670 (1897). A House Select Committee in 1967 stated:

Censure of a Member has been deemed appropriate in cases of a breach of the privileges of the House. There are two classes of privilege, the one, affecting the rights of the House collectively, its safety, dignity, and the integrity of its proceedings; and the other, affecting the rights, reputation, and conduct of Members, individually. Most cases of censure have involved the use of unparliamentary language, assaults upon a Member or insults to the House by introductions of offensive resolutions, but in five cases in the House and one in the Senate [as of 1967] censure was based on corrupt acts by a Member, and in another Senate case censure was based upon noncooperation with and abuse of Senate committees.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – A woman has been arrested in connection to alleged election fraud and illegal voting, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Wednesday.

According to Paxton, Rachel Rodriguez of San Antonio was “exposed in a Project Veritas video” ahead of the 2020 election regarding vote harvesting and acknowledged what she was doing was illegal.

Rodriguez is accused of election fraud, illegal voting, unlawfully assisting people voting by mail and unlawfully possessing an official ballot, according to Paxton. She could face up to 20 years in prison if she is convicted.

“Many continue to claim that there’s no such thing as election fraud. We’ve always known that such a claim is false and misleading, and today we have additional hard evidence. This is a victory for election integrity and a strong signal that anyone who attempts to defraud the people of Texas, deprive them of their vote, or undermine the integrity of elections will be brought to justice,” Paxton said. “The shocking and blatantly illegal action documented by Project Veritas demonstrates a form of election fraud my office continually investigates and prosecutes. I am fiercely committed to ensuring the voting process is secure and fair throughout the state, and my office is prepared to assist any Texas county in combating this insidious, un-American form of fraud.”

Investigators are continuing to look into the case and Paxton’s office is asking anyone who may have information to come forward.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) turned the tables on Democrats in her one minute floor speech Wednesday opposing the article of impeachment against President Trump that accuses him of inciting the storming of the Capitol last Wednesday. Greene called out the Democrats for supporting the rioters who torched and looted U.S. cities last year in the George Floyd riots. But it wasn’t the substance of her remarks the media reported. US Sentences Bulgarian Owner of BitCoin-Laundering Hub

A court in the United States has sentenced a Bulgarian national for his role in a multi-million dollar cyber-fraud and money laundering racket, according to a statement from the Department of Justice.

The DoJ said in its release on Tuesday that Iossifov has now been sentenced to ten years behind bars, of which he will have to serve a minimum of 8.5 years before being eligible for release.

According to evidence presented at trial, Iossifov’s main clients were Romanian scammers who took part in an international criminal enterprise referred to by the DoJ as the Alexandria Online Auction Fraud (AOAF) network.

Iossifov helped defraud at least 900 American citizens and laundered nearly US$5 million in cryptocurrency for the scammers in less than three years. In return, he received over $184,000 in profits for processing related transactions.

During this period, the Romania-based members of the criminal organization used widely-recognised sales websites, such as eBay and Craigslist, to advertise high-cost goods, mostly vehicles, that did not actually exist.

Once victims made their purchase, local associates would receive the funds, which they would then convert into cryptocurrency and later transfer to money launderers abroad.

Iossifov was one such foreign-based money launderers who facilitated this final step in the scheme, allowing his clients to conduct cryptocurrency exchanges for cash without any documentation regarding the origin of the funds.

Two months before Iossifov was convicted, fifteen other defendants in the case pleaded guilty for their roles in the online auction fraud.

A U.S. court said then that members of the conspiracy created fictitious online accounts to post the advertisements. They also delivered invoices to the victims bearing trademarks of reputable companies and set up legitimate-seeming call centers so as to impersonate customer support.

A further three defendants named in the case remain at large.

The prime minister of Estonia announced his immediate resignation in the early hours of Wednesday following the detention of several suspects with ties to his party as part of a corruption investigation related to real estate development in Tallinn.

Prime Minister Jüri Ratas said on Facebook that the allegations put forward by the authorities “do not mean that someone is definitely guilty, but they will inevitably cast a serious shadow over all those involved.”

“In such a situation, it only seems right that, by resigning myself, I will give the opportunity to shed light on all the circumstances and to come to terms with clarity,” he added in his post.

Among those detained are Secretary General of Ratas’ Centre Party, Mihhail Korb, as well as Kersti Kracht, an adviser to the Minister of Finance, and businessman Hillar Teder.

A spokesperson for the Centre Party - which itself was named suspect - told OCCRP in an emailed statement that Korb has similarly announced that he will resign, adding that the party will “cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies.”

Teder is accused of agreeing to donate a total of up to one million euros (US$1.2 million) for permission to construct a car park near the Porto Franco complex in Tallinn.

He is also alleged to have conspired to bribe Kracht in order to secure a 39 million euro (US$47 million) loan as part of relief measures amid the pandemic. Both are accused of a money laundering conspiracy to conceal the planned payment, in addition to further, as yet undisclosed criminal offences.

The two remaining suspects have not been named by the authorities, and are reportedly not public figures.

While the accused have as yet only been detained, authorities are reportedly pushing forward in order to secure their arrest, such that prosecutors may then be at liberty to bring charges.

Ratas has formally tendered his resignation with the office of President Kersti Kaljulaid, according to an official statement.

The scandal is already seeing gathering fallout, with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development announcing it has taken the decision not to grant a 63 million euro ($76 million) loan to the Porto Franco project.

It is not the first time the development initiative has seen questions raised concerning payments between the business community and the ruling party. In October last year, Hillar Teder responded to scrutiny over a 60,000 euro (US$73,000) donation to the Centre Party by denying the contribution had any connection with Porto Franco.
