Senate committee votes to require renaming of military bases named after Confederates

The GOP-led panel reportedly approved the amendment offered by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D)

The Republican-led Senate Armed Services Committee has voted to require the Pentagon to rename military bases named after Confederates, amid growing calls to do so in the wake of the death of George Floyd last month.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) tweeted Tuesday, "As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I filed an amendment to the annual defense bill last week to rename all bases named for Confederate generals. It's long past time to end the tribute to white supremacy on our military installations."

The senator linked to an op-ed by retired Army Gen. David Petraeus, who argued that Army installations bearing the names of such rebel "traitors" should be renamed.

CBS News reported that "the measure requires the Defense Department to rename posts and assets — streets, aircraft, ships, and other equipment — either named for Confederate officers or that honor the Confederacy within three years."

According to Roll Call, Warren's amendment passed on Wednesday. The outlet reported that the move by the GOP-led committee has put it on a "collision course" with President Donald Trump, who has expressed vehement opposition to the prospect of renaming military installations.

The president tweeted Tuesday, "It has been suggested that we should rename as many as 10 of our Legendary Military Bases, such as Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Hood in Texas, Fort Benning in Georgia, etc. These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage, and a history of Winning, Victory, and Freedom. The United States of America trained and deployed our HEROES on these Hallowed Grounds, and won two World Wars. Therefore, my Administration will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations."

Chicago Mayor Lightfoot calls video of police relaxing, popping popcorn near riots an 'embarrassment'

After video surfaced allegedly showing a group of Chicago police officers “lounging” in a congressman’s office as looters ransacked nearby businesses, Mayor Lori Lightfoot called it an “embarrassment” and pledged to identify the individuals and hold them accountable.

Lightfoot displayed still images, said be to taken from the video, at a news conference Thursday, standing alongside Rep. Bobby Rush, whose office was where the incident happened.

She said the images show the individuals taking a break in Rush’s office while small businesses were looted and burned - and while their fellow officers were outside “getting bottles thrown at their heads” by rioters.

“That’s a personal embarrassment to me,” Lightfoot told Rush during her remarks. “I’m sorry that you and your staff even had to deal with this incredible indignity.”

Chicago police did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment, but the department’s official Twitter account retweeted the livestream of Lightfoot’s news conference Thursday afternoon.

The department later announced that an internal investigation had been opened into the incident.

As protests across Chicago devolved into chaos last week and residents started to loot nearby stores, police officers were making popcorn and drinking coffee while “lounging” inside Congressman Bobby Rush’s office, officials said in a stunning news conference on Thursday.

Speaking alongside Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Rush said at least 13 Chicago Police officers were loitering inside his South Side campaign office in the early hours of June 1 and were “relaxing” while nearby stores were being looted and burned, and their fellow officers were clashing with demonstrators.

“They even had the unmitigated gall to make coffee for themselves and to pop popcorn, my popcorn, in my microwave, while looters were tearing apart businesses within their sight and within their reach,” Rush (D-IL) said.

The incident, which Rush and Lightfoot said was captured on CCTV, showed the officers—and at least three supervisors—with feet up on desks. One officer “was asleep on my couch” while another “was on his cellphone,” Rush said.

“They were in a mode of relaxation and did not care about what was happening. They did not care. They absolutely did not care,” Rush added.

Rush’s office is located in a strip mall that had been looted for several hours that night. While Lightfoot clarified that the officers were responding to a call that the campaign office had been broken into and burglarized, Rush said that when he finally got around to viewing the CCTV—he was horrified to see it filled with cops.

The shocking news comes amid scrutiny of Chicago cops, who have been accused of using excessive force during protests and riots in the wake of George Floyd’s death. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office and the FBI are reviewing allegations that one Chicago officer pulled a woman from a car by her hair before placing a knee on her neck—a move similar to how Floyd died at the hands of police in Minneapolis.

Lightfoot, at times visibly angry and tearful during the Thursday press conference, said the officers “demonstrated a total disregard for their colleagues [and] for the badge” and should be held accountable. She said she and her team were “enraged” when they learned of the incident. None of the 13 officers has been identified, and she urged them to come forward before investigators find them.

Calling it a “personal embarrassment,” Lightfoot offered an apology on behalf of the city, saying the officers had “abandoned” their obligations to keep the city safe. She said she would push for the state to pass a law requiring police officers to be licensed.

“We should all be disgusted, and we should all feel hurt and betrayed in this moment, of all moments,” Lightfoot said, adding that the officers were inside Rush’s office, located in a shopping plaza that had been looted for about “four to five hours.”

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown also condemned the officers’ actions, stating that he planned to hold them accountable and “uphold the nobility of this profession.”

“If you sleep during a riot, what do you do during a regular shift when there is no riot?” Brown asked, before apologizing on behalf of the police department.

Rush, the co-founder of the Illinois Black Panther Party, has been a member of Congress since 1993. The Democratic lawmaker has had a tense relationship with Lightfoot in the past, after Rush falsely accused her of being the Fraternal Order of Police’s preferred candidate in 2019.

While he was campaigning for a Cook County Board president last year, Rush said those who vote for Lightfoot would have “the blood of the next young black man or black woman who is killed by the police” on their hands. Seemingly alluding to their history on Thursday, Lightfoot said that, despite their differences, she would work together with Rush against misconduct during a historical period of reckoning for the police.

Black lawmakers unveil bill to remove Confederate statues from Capitol

A pair of senior members of the Congressional Black Caucus introduced legislation on Thursday that would remove the remaining Confederate statues from the Capitol following nationwide protests against police brutality and racial profiling.

The bill from Reps. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) came a day after Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called for removing Confederate statues from the Capitol complex.

There are 11 statues of people who served in the Confederacy, either as officials or soldiers, displayed in the Capitol complex. Some, such as Jefferson Davis, who served as president of the Confederate States, are located just steps from the House chamber.

“Americans in all 50 states and millions of people around the world are marching to protest racism and police violence directed at people of color, and yet across the country, Confederate statues and monuments still pay tribute to white supremacy and slavery in public spaces,” Lee said in a statement. “It is time to tell the truth about what these statues are: hateful symbols that have no place in our society and certainly should not be enshrined in the U.S. Capitol.”

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) introduced companion legislation in the Senate with more than a dozen co-sponsors, calling the removal of the statues "long overdue."

"Those who committed treason against the United States of America and led our nation into its most painful and bloody war to preserve the institution of slavery are not patriots and should not be afforded such a rare honor in this sacred space," he said in a statement.

The statues are all part of the National Statuary Hall collection, which are displayed all over the Capitol complex. Each of the 50 states contributes two statues to the collection, which they can replace if their legislatures and governors approve the change.

The legislation from Democrats would remove all of the Confederate statues in the collection within 120 days. The statues could either be reclaimed by the states or given to the Smithsonian.

Lee previously introduced the bill in 2017 following the violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va.

Houthis repelled a large attack by Saudi-backed forces on their positions along the border with the kingdom’s southern province of ‘Asir.

The attack targeted the area of al-Majaza al-Sharqiyah. Houthi fighters confronted the attackers, forcing them to retreat within a few hours. The Yemen group’s media wing released a 3-minute video of the battle.

A day earlier, the Houthis launched an attack in the al-Ajarish desert, which lays along the border with the southern Saudi province of Najran. Houthi fighters stormed several positions in Beir al-Salami and Mahatat al-Sudani. A video of the clashes confirms that several Saudi-backed fighters were killed or injured.

Senate Calls for New F-35 Hub in Pacific, Deployment of Cruise Missile Batteries

The Senate Armed Services Committee wants to spend nearly $7 billion over two years to launch an aggressive new military effort aimed at deterring China and shoring up U.S. defenses in the Pacific region. It's also calling for strategic deployments of weapons and platforms to keep China and other threats, including Russia, at bay.

The Pacific Deterrence Initiative, approved as part of the Senate version of the 2021 defense budget and policy bill, includes $1.4 billion for next year and plans $5.5 billion for fiscal 2022 to augment missile defense, fund new efforts in support of regional allies, and forward-posture more troops in the region.

"The best way to protect U.S. security and prosperity in Asia is to maintain a credible balance of military power but, after years of underfunding, America's ability to do so is at risk," a summary of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, released by the Senate Armed Services Committee following markups, reads.

The Senate-approved NDAA "encourages" the Air Force to establish a new F-35A Joint Strike Fighter operating location in the Indo-Pacific region "quickly to posture ready forces in our priority arena," the bill summary states.

In April, Pacific Air Forces took delivery of its first two F-35s, stationed at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. The base is set to have 54 of the aircraft by December 2021. The Senate's version of the NDAA includes a total of $9.1 billion to buy more of the stealthy fifth-generation fighters - 14 more than the White House asked for in its budget request.

Elements of the Pacific Deterrence Initiative also include improving active and passive missile-defense systems for bases and operating locations in the region; building up the military's system of prepositioned stockpiles, including vehicles, weapons and fuel; and starting to transition the military's operating model in the Pacific from large and difficult-to-defend bases to "dispersed, resilient, and adaptive basing."

In a May op-ed for War on the Rocks, committee chairman Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, and ranking member Jack Reed, D-Rhode Island, argued that the creation of the PDI would re-orient the Pentagon's approach to strategic planning and spending.

"It doesn't matter how many F-35s the military buys if very few are stationed in the region, their primary bases have little defense against Chinese missiles, they don't have secondary airfields to operate from, they can't access prepositioned stocks of fuel and munitions, or they can't be repaired in theater and get back in the fight when it counts," they wrote. "The Pacific Deterrence Initiative will incentivize increased focus on posture and logistics, and help measure whether these requirements are being matched with resources."

Gambian Man Indicted on Torture Charges

A Gambian man previously residing in Denver, Colorado was arrested today for torture charges stemming from his actions specifically intended to inflict severe physical pain and suffering on individuals in his custody and control in The Gambia in 2006.

An indictment was returned on June 2 and unsealed today charging Michael Sang Correa, 41, a national of The Gambia, with one count of conspiracy to commit torture and six counts of inflicting torture on specific individuals. Correa made his first court appearance on the charges today before U.S. Magistrate Judge N. Reid Neureiter in the District of Colorado.

“Michael Correa allegedly committed heinous acts of violence against victim after victim in a brutal effort to coerce confessions from suspected coup plotters in The Gambia,” said Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “These charges underscore that the United States will not be a safe haven for perpetrators of torture and that human rights violators will be held accountable and brought to justice.”

Hundreds of Officers Responding To Active Shooter In Manhunt For Killer Who Shot Calif. Deputy In Ambush

PASO ROBLES, California — Police and deputies were responding to a shooting Thursday as they conducted a manhunt for a suspect accused of killing a man and seriously wounding a deputy in an ambush.

There was a massive law enforcement response to the scene in the area of Highway 46 and Ramada Drive. According to KCOY, “hundreds of officers” were responding. Residents in the area were being told to shelter-in-place.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect in the Wednesday incident as 26-year-old Mason James Lira, a transient from the Monterey area.

Lira is accused of a shooting spree which began at approximately 3:45 AM Wednesday when he started shooting at the Paso Robles Police Department building. A Sheriff’s Deputy who responded to that call was shot in the face and later a local man was found shot to death at the Paso Robles train station.

A widespread search of downtown Paso Robles was conducted but the suspect was not located.

“We had an unprovoked attack on local law enforcement, and in my opinion the act of a coward,” San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said.

Trump Raises Eyebrows After Referring to US Secret Service as ‘S.S.’ on Twitter

The Twittersphere was flabbergasted on Thursday when US President Donald Trump tweeted that “protesters, agitators” and “anarchists” were handled “very easily” by the “S.S.” Although Trump was presumably referring to the Secret Service, the initials SS are associated with the Schutzstaffel, a Nazi paramilitary organization.

“Our great National Guard Troops who took care of the area around the White House could hardly believe how easy it was. ‘A walk in the park’, one said. The protesters, agitators, anarchists (ANTIFA), and others, were handled VERY easily by the Guard, D.C. Police, & S.S. GREAT JOB!” Trump tweeted.

Trump’s tweet was met with incredulity, with some tweeting that his use of the initials was meant to “inflame tensions and instigate harms.” Others claimed that even as non-Americans, they are aware that the proper abbreviation for the US Secret Service is USSS.

“For those who say Trump used S.S. because of Twitter’s character limits, then please tell me why he wasted characters for the dot between the two S’s. He could have easily said USSS rather than S.S. and the character limits would literally be the same,” another user wrote.

Zoom Disables Accounts Of Exiled Chinese Dissidents During Tiananmen Square Memorial

Zoom shares easily shook off the controversy about the app's vulnerability to intrusion by the Chinese, since most normal Americans don't really care - if some MSS spooks want to eavesdrop on our conversations with grandma, they can go right ahead. They might even learn a thing or two.

But on Thursday, concerns about Zoom's ties to Beijing resurfaced following reports that the company disabled the accounts belonging to the surviving members of the Tiananmen Square student movement during a video chat event they held to commemorate the anniversary of the incident last week (in China, the massacre is referred to as "the June 4th Incident"). The call was shut down by the company at the behest of the Chinese government because it included dissidents dialing in from China, the FT reports.

As the FT reminds us, nearly one-third of Zoom's workforce resides in China, although the company trades on the Nasdaq. Much of its R&D takes place in China, and its servers are based there (making them vulnerable to infiltration). Famous student leader and exiled dissident Wang Dan reportedly participated in the call.

Zoom disabled the accounts of a group of Chinese dissidents in the US after they used its video conference service to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre. Zoom’s role in shutting down the meeting, which was hosted and organised by activists in the US but included participants dialling in from China, will increase fears about the platform’s security and how it will respond to government censorship requests. Zoom’s video chat service has exploded in popularity since lockdowns were introduced across the globe to slow the spread of Covid-19. The company, which is listed on Nasdaq, has a large operation in China: nearly a third of its workers are based in the country and much of its R&D takes place there. It also has servers in China.

Zoom claimed it disabled the accounts, including one paid account, because the call 'violated local - ie Chinese - law'.

Mr Wang’s team shared screenshots with the Financial Times of his Zoom call being cancelled twice and two of his team’s paid Zoom accounts being disabled. The cancellations started just as the meetings were due to begin on the morning of June 4 in the US, where Mr Wang is based. Zoom later suggested that the Tiananmen commemoration had violated local laws, saying that “We strive to limit actions taken to those necessary to comply with local law . . . We regret that a few recent meetings with participants both inside and outside of China were negatively impacted and important conversations were disrupted.”

The decision to censor the conversation is just one more example of why users should avoid the popular app, which has refused to implement end-to-end encryption and shown an alarming indifference to implementing security standards that might protect users from Beijing.

Joe Biden Snaps when NAACP Claims Young People ‘Concerned’ by Policing Record

oe Biden lost his composure when a moderator from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) claimed some “younger people are concerned” about the candidate’s positions on policing.

Biden snapped at Ed Gordon during a forum on Tuesday when Gordon said he received some emails from people who say because Biden wrote the 1994 crime bill, that he “wouldn’t be able to steer” his way past “traditional policing” and that he favors more of a “hard line” strategy.

“What do you tell them?” Gordon asked.

“I tell them it’s not accurate,” Biden responded.

Moments later, Gordon revisited the issue and Biden grew testy.

“If you said that they were wrong in thinking that, that is their feeling, so give them a sense—” he continued before Biden cut him off.

“No, there’s no evidence— No, that’s not true! Show me a poll that says that!” Biden yelled.

“I didn’t say any poll,” Gordon corrected.

“No, you said they think!” Biden shouted.

“I said to you— Mr. Vice President, you’re going to have to listen. I had an email from a couple of young people. I didn’t mention a poll,” Gordon said, as Biden backed off.

“I said that was their concern,” Gordon continued.

“It’s a legitimate concern. They should be skeptical,” Biden said, changing his tone.

“But the idea that somehow— I’ve been told all along how young people don’t think that I’m in the right spot, the right place; there is no polling evidence to sustain that, nor is there voting evidence thus far to sustain that,” Biden said, before inviting people to look at his record.

“Show me. Watch me. I’m listening. Watch what I do,” he said.

Republican National Convention to take place in Jacksonville, Florida

The Republican National Committee will hold its 2020 convention in Jacksonville, Florida. "We are thrilled to hold @realDonaldTrump's acceptance of the Republican nomination in the great city of Jacksonville! Not only is Florida his home state, it is crucial to victory," said McDaniel in a tweet. "We look forward to bringing this great celebration and economic boon to the Sunshine State!"

The Republican National Committee was scheduled to take place at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Aug. 24-27. However, speculation grew that the convention may move its hosting site after public disagreements grew between Trump and Cooper. Last week, President Trump announced the Republican National Convention will not take place in North Carolina after discussions with the state's governor. "Had long planned to have the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, a place I love. Now, @NC_Governor Roy Cooper and his representatives refuse to guarantee that we can have use of the Spectrum Arena - Spend millions of dollars, have everybody arrive, and then tell them they will not be able to gain entry," Trump tweeted. "Governor Cooper is still in Shelter-In-Place Mode, and not allowing us to occupy the arena as originally anticipated and promised. Would have showcased beautiful North Carolina to the World, and brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, and jobs, for the State."

GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a staunch ally of the president, previously said he'd "love" for the convention to be held in Florida, a state Trump regularly visits. “Florida would love to have the RNC. Heck, I’m a Republican, it would be good for us to have the DNC,” DeSantis said about the idea.

Twitter deletes over 170,000 accounts related to Chinese propaganda operation

Twitter deleted hundreds of thousands of accounts in an effort to halt a Chinese propaganda operation. On Thursday, the social media company said it deleted nearly 24,000 accounts within a "core network" that disseminated false narratives from the Communist Party of China and an additional 150,000 accounts who amplified the messages of those within the network. "In general, this entire network was involved in a range of manipulative and coordinated activities," Twitter said in a blog post. "They were Tweeting predominantly in Chinese languages and spreading geopolitical narratives favorable to the Communist Party of China (CCP), while continuing to push deceptive narratives about the political dynamics in Hong Kong."

In late May, Chinese lawmakers approved a plan for a broad national security law criminalizing sedition, treason, and secession after overriding Hong Kong's legislative body to introduce the proposal. "If this move takes place, 'one country, two systems' will be officially erased. This is the end of Hong Kong," Dennis Kwok, a Hong Kong lawmaker, warned when the measure was first proposed. In reaction to the law's proposal, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that he certified to Congress that Hong Kong would no longer enjoy a high degree of autonomy from China, a decision that would threaten the area's ability to operate as an international financial hub. President Trump echoed Pompeo's decision and promised to end Hong Kong's trading privileges in hopes it would prevent China from siphoning money from the area.

In November 2019, Trump signed into law the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act to support Hong Kong protesters advocating for civil liberties and freedoms, who, at times, even held up the American flag during their demonstrations. The law requires the United States to certify Hong Kong's autonomy from China on an annual basis, or it would face a loss of special economic treatment. China indicated it would take "countermeasures" should the U.S. react in a way that compromises its financial interests. In its blog post, Twitter said it also suspended thousands of accounts that promoted the United Russia party and Turkish President Recep Erdogan. "Ultimately our goal is to serve the public conversation, remove bad faith actors, and to advance public understanding of these critical topics," Twitter said.

Permit me to lay a wreath on the bier of General Cox, whose death you have announced. To the present generation General Cox has been largely a stranger, but to the old generation that has nearly passed away, he was familiar because of his works and walk in life.

You gave some inadequate account of his valorous deeds during the war. They bespoke the man. But that struggle on the battlefield ended in disaster. Then came the civil struggle—the efforts of the people to maintain their standard of excellence in life and their aspirations as enlightened civilized beings against the machinations of those who sought to crush us down and to inflict on us the most cruel fate they could devise. In that struggle which was protracted for years, General Cox was a commanding figure, as he had been on the battlefield; and he attained relatively a higher post of honor, and his contributions to the cause were great and important; and, happily, the efforts he then made were crowned with success.

The end to be attained was the preservation of our Anglo-Saxon civilization—to prevent the subjection of the white people to the domination of the untutored population of African descent; and to General Cox and his associates is to be attributed the victory. To them is due the lasting gratitude of every white North Carolinian who has red blood in his veins; and, likewise, the colored people of the State owe to those men grateful appreciation, for they averted race antagonisms and race hatreds that would have been most disastrous to the colored people of our community. Indeed, the happiness and good fortune of both races in North Carolina is largely due to them.

While there are still living a considerable number of those patriots, like Major John W. Graham, of Hillsboro, who participated actively in that long and arduous struggle, yet General Cox was the last survivor of the more active and conspicuous leaders in that great and important crisis. Governor Graham, Governor Bragg, Governor Vance, General Ransom, Judge Ashe, Judge Merriman, General Barringer, Colonel Saunders, Governor Jarvis, R. H. Battle, and their associates, have gone to their reward. It was General Cox's fortune to survive them. He was the last of that group of distinguished men who cooperated in their efforts to avert the calamities that threatened the State.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who on Wednesday demanded the removal of Confederate statues occupying the U.S. Capitol, has remained silent on her father’s role in overseeing the dedication of the Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee Monument while serving as Baltimore’s mayor in 1948. Pelosi this week formally requested the removal of Confederate statues occupying the U.S. Capitol, dismissing them as “monuments to men who advocated cruelty and barbarism to achieve such a plainly racist end.” Her demand comes as angry protesters across the nation take matters into their own hands, vandalizing — and in some cases, beheading — statues and monuments memorializing the Civil War era and beyond. “As I have said before, the halls of Congress are the very heart of our democracy. The statues in the Capitol should embody our highest ideals as Americans, expressing who we are and who we aspire to be as a nation,” Pelosi said in her letter to Committee Chair Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Vice Chair Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “Monuments to men who advocated cruelty and barbarism to achieve such a plainly racist end are a grotesque affront to these ideals,” she continued. “Their statues pay homage to hate, not heritage. They must be removed.”

However, her father, Thomas D’Alesandro, Jr., oversaw the dedication of such a statue in Baltimore’s Wyman Park — the Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee Monument — as mayor of the city in 1948. At the time, the Speaker’s father said people could look to Jackson’s and Lee’s lives as inspiration and urged Americans to “emulate Jackson’s example and stand like a stone wall against aggression in any form that would seek to destroy the liberty of the world.” “World Wars I and II found the North and South fighting for a common cause, and the generalship and military science displayed by these two great men in the War between the States lived on and were applied in the military plans of our nation in Europe and the Pacific areas,” D’Alesandro said at the dedication ceremony, as detailed by the Baltimore Sun. He continued: Today with our nation beset by subversive groups and propaganda which seeks to destroy our national unity, we can look for inspiration to the lives of Lee and Jackson to remind us to be resolute and determined in preserving our sacred institutions … remain steadfast in our determination to preserve freedom, not only for ourselves, but for other liberty-loving nations who are striving to preserve their national unity as free nations. “In these days of uncertainty and turmoil, Americans must emulate Jackson’s example and stand like a stone wall against aggression in any form that would seek to destroy the liberty of the world,” he added.

City crews removed the statue in August 2017 under the direction of the city council: Pelosi’s office did not respond to Breitbart News’s request for comment on the matter. This is not the only inquiry Pelosi refused to answer regarding her family’s history. The Speaker has also, in recent weeks, criticized President Trump’s response to violent riots. Court Dismisses Satanist’s Challenge to Abortion Law

A federal appeals court dismissed a lawsuit against a Missouri abortion law filed by a member of the Satanic Temple. On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, in a 3-0 decision, dismissed the lawsuit filed by “Judy Doe,” who claimed a state law requiring abortion clinics to present women with a booklet that states life begins at conception violated her religious beliefs. As part of Missouri’s informed consent practices, the law requires that women planning to have an abortion be presented with a booklet that states, “The life of each human being begins at conception. Abortion will terminate the life of a separate, unique, living human being.” The booklet also contains images of babies in the uterus and how they develop throughout pregnancy. While women must receive the booklet, they are not required to read it. Nevertheless, Doe claimed that, as a satanist, the law requiring that booklet be presented to her violated both her religious beliefs and the Establishment clause of the First Amendment.

The court ruled, however, the Missouri law is constitutional. In the opinion, Judge David Stras, a Trump appointee, observed, “As a member of ‘The Satanic Temple,’ she believes that the ‘Human Tissue’ that she was carrying was ‘part of her body.’” “As she stated in her complaint, her ‘body is inviolable’ and ‘[s]he alone’ gets to decide what to do with it, regardless of ‘the current or future condition of the Human Tissue’ within,” Stras continued. The judge wrote that Doe’s claim is problematic because “a state does not establish religion by passing a law that just happens to coincide or harmonize with the tenets of some or all religions.” Doe also argued, Stras noted, that Missouri law requiring that she has had an opportunity to view an ultrasound and received the informed consent booklet, violates her “Satanist beliefs” that include “without limitation any law that serves no medical purpose or purports to protect the interests of her Human Tissue.”

However, the court disagreed, pointing out that states do have a role in determining when life begins. The judge wrote that, in 1992, the U.S. Supreme Court’s Planned Parenthood v. Casey plurality opinion “recognized that informed-consent laws like this one serve ‘the legitimate purpose of reducing the risk that a woman may elect an abortion, only to discover later, with devastating psychological consequences, that her decision was not fully informed.’” Abortion industry giant Planned Parenthood has been working with the Satanic Temple to fight state abortion restrictions.

In April 2019, the Satanic Temple also announced the IRS had recognized it as a “church” with tax-exempt status. Despite its designation as a “church,” TST is non-religious and states on its FAQ page that it does not worship Satan. “[N]or do we believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural,” the group explains. “The Satanic Temple believes that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan. To embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions.”

California Senate OKs bill to mail ballots for fall election

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Fearing a surge of coronavirus cases that could force a second statewide shutdown in the fall, the California Senate on Thursday approved a measure that would guarantee all registered voters get a ballot in the mail before the November election.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has already ordered ballots to be mailed. But Republican congressional candidate Darrell Issa and the Republican National Committee have sued, arguing his order is illegal. The bill is an attempt by lawmakers to make sure it happens anyway.

Election officials nationwide have explored vote-by-mail options this year because of the pandemic, prompting condemnation from President Donald Trump, who has claimed that “mail boxes will be robbed, ballots will be forged & even illegally printed out & fraudulently signed."

Five states - Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington and Utah - conduct elections entirely by mail. None have reported significant fraud.

Most California voters already vote by mail. More than 87% of registered voters are scheduled to receive a ballot in the mail before the November election, including all of the 4.3 million registered voters in Los Angeles County.

Still, some Senate Republicans opposed the bill because it would let county election officials count mail-in ballots if they are received within 20 days of the election. Right now, the law says mail-in ballots only count if they are received within three days of an election.

“That does suggest to the people who have grave concerns about this that it encourages fraud,” Republican Sen. Patricia Bates said. “Seventeen days suggests there is some other agenda there, and we don't need more conspiracy theories going on with regards to our elections.”

Lawmakers included the extra time because they fear a second wave of coronavirus cases could force another round of stay-at-home orders that might delay ballots delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. Also, the Postal Service has been consistently losing money as it faces competition from commercial shippers. The Postal Service has warned it could run out of money this year without a taxpayer bailout.

“While our post office is usually quite efficient, on occasions they are not as efficient as we would like them to be,” Democratic state Sen. Tom Umberg said. “We don't want to disenfranchise anyone, not through any fault of their own.”

The California secretary of state's office says sending every voter a ballot will cost an extra $72 million. Most of it would fall on local governments, with the state paying $13 million for an outreach campaign. But lawmakers believe most of that cost could be covered by the federal government.

The Senate passed the bill with a 31-7 vote. It still must be approved by the state Assembly before it can become law.

Texas Dem: 'Even If People Loot, So What? Burn It to the Ground'

When protests over the police killing of George Floyd devolved into looting, vandalism, and arson across America, destroying black lives, black livelihoods, and black monuments, Democrats and liberals shamefully downplayed or even excused the violence because the perpetrators agreed with their political agenda. Yet it seems none have proven quite as vocal as a Democrat running for U.S. House in Texas’s 24th congressional district.

In a live digital event on Tuesday, Kim Olson complained about police snipers stationed on a roof at a protest she attended in Dallas, Texas.

“They had snipers on the roof, what the hell you got snipers on the roof for in a peaceful march? Even if people loot, so what? Burn it to the ground, if that’s what it’s gonna take to fix our nation,” Olson said in video obtained by The Washington Examiner. “I don’t think — but I’m just saying, what are you going to do? Shoot us as we protest?”

“I mean, we really have fundamentally pivoted the militarization of our police force. … It used to be ‘protect and serve,'” she complained.

Olson made the comment during a long answer to a question about her position on far-left calls to disband or defund police departments. The candidate began by admitting that while “defunding” is a “tough word,” she supports shifting funding toward rehab centers and social workers.

“You can’t just tackle the police, you’ve got to tackle some of the social injustice issues that are going on within our justice system,” Olson said. “You can’t train racism out of folks.”

“This quote is being taken out of context,” Rachel Perry, Olson’s campaign manager, told the Washington Examiner. “As a combat vet, Colonel Olson knows first hand the human heartbreak of violence. She knows we cannot use force to fix a systemic problem of undue violence and discrimination perpetrated by those who are sworn to protect and serve. We have to rebuild from the ground up a color-blind public safety institution across America.”

Olson is the front-runner in the Democratic nomination in Texas’s 24th district, an open seat since Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas) is retiring. Cook Political Report rates the race a “Republican toss up” and Politico also describes it as a “toss-up.” Marchant won reelection by about 3 points in 2018.

Olson, a military veteran, faces school board trustee Candace Valenzuela in a runoff election on July 14. The winner will face former Mayor Beth Van Duyne (R-Irving).

While Olson became one of the first women to attend and graduate from flight school, her service was not without scandal. When she was stationed in Iraq, the Pentagon accused her of directing contracts to a private security firm that she helped operate. She has denied profiting from the arrangement, but she did plead guilty to charges that included creating the appearance of a conflict of interest, paid a $3,500 fine, and retired with an honorable discharge.

While the campaign insisted that Olson’s statement was taken out of context, that statement echoed a distressing trend among Democrats. Many have downplayed — if not excused — the destructive riots across America. As antifa militant rebels set up a rogue state in Seattle, Gov. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Mayor Jenny Durkan not only defended the rebels as “peaceful” and “patriotic,” but insisted it would be “illegal and unconstitutional” for President Donald Trump to suppress the armed insurrection.

Olson likely regrets her words, but the context does not excuse them. Democrats insist that America’s institutions are fundamentally racist, and this narrative justifies a violent revolution. President Trump is right to counter that America is fundamentally good, although it is undeniably flawed. Trump has condemned the horrific killing of George Floyd and he has championed criminal justice reform. But he will not abide violent riots or rebellions in American cities, and Democrats shouldn’t, either.

San Francisco police won't respond to non-criminal calls

SAN FRANCISCO —

San Francisco police will stop responding to neighbor disputes, reports on homeless people, school discipline interventions and other non-criminal activities as part of a police reform plan the mayor announced Thursday.

Mayor London Breed said in a news release that on calls that don't involve a threat to public safety, police would be replaced by trained, unarmed professionals to limit unnecessary confrontation between the police department and the community.

“We know that a lack of equity in our society overall leads to a lot of the problems that police are being asked to solve," she said in the release. "We are going to keep going with these additional reforms and continuing to find ways to reinvest in communities that have historically been underserved and harmed by systemic racism.”

Breed’s said as part of police reforms, the city will also strengthen accountability policies, ban the use of military-grade weapons and divert funding to the African-American community.

The city will develop its plan over the next year and follow models like the Cahoots program in Eugene, Ore., Breed said. That community-based crisis program employs social workers and mental health workers to respond to disturbances where crimes are not being committed.

White House Sets Asylum Reform to Block Economic Migrants

President Donald Trump’s administration posted a new regulation to deter economic migrants from seeking asylum in the United States.

The draft was immediately slammed by pro-migration groups, who object to Trump’s closure of the southern border to economic immigrants since early 2020, and insist that the United States is a nation for immigrants. “The Trump Administration’s renewed efforts to dismantle our nation’s asylum system are abhorrent, un-American, and illegal,” said a statement by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “This President is attempting to rewrite our immigration laws in direct contravention of duly enacted statutes and clear congressional intent … We can and must continue to be a beacon of hope and freedom across the world.” Since roughly 2011, more than two million migrants — plus roughly 500,000 “Unaccompanied Alien Children” — from Central America have moved into the United States. They have rationally used loose asylum rules and loopholes to migrate into the United States in search of work, safe neighborhoods, and decent K-12 schools. Few have been sent home because the courts are clogged and underfunded by Congress.

That massive migration has been great for the migrants — and for white-collar employers, real estate owners, landlords, government aid workers, and immigration lawyers. But it has been a disaster to blue-collar Americans. They have lost jobs and wages, cheap housing, K-12 opportunities for their kids – as well as political support from pro-migrant, white-collar Democrats, and college-graduate progressives. The migration has also caused much turmoil in Central American countries because the exit of many young men and women deflate the political and economic reforms needed to grow their nation’s economies. Trump used a variety of diplomatic threats and legal reforms to block the migration in early 2020. Democrats and business groups have fought Trump at every step, partly because almost 150 million people around the world who want to become workers, renters, and consumers in the United States said a 2017 Gallup survey.

The Justice Department explained the new policy: [The Departments] submitted to the Federal Register for publication a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that would amend multiple provisions of the Departments’ regulations to create more efficient procedures for the adjudication of claims for asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention Against Torture (CAT) regulations. According to the department, the draft regulation would: Amend the regulations governing credible fear determinations so that individuals found to have such a fear will have their claims for asylum, withholding of removal, or protection under the CAT adjudicated by an immigration judge in streamlined proceedings, rather than in immigration court proceedings conducted under section 240 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA); Permit immigration judges to pretermit asylum applications without a hearing if the application does not demonstrate prima facie eligibility for relief; Clarify standards for the adjudication of asylum and withholding claims including amendments to the definitions of the terms “particular social group,” “political opinion,” “persecution,” and “firm resettlement”; Raise the burden of proof for the threshold screening of withholding and CAT protection claims from “significant possibility” to a “reasonable possibility” standard;

The new rules would largely bar migrants who traveled through various safe countries to get to the United States. The rule would also narrow the categories of people who could claim membership of a persecuted “particular social group”: Economic migrants have claimed membership in those groups to win entry, work permits, and residency in the United States. That new policy reverses the trend set by President Barack Obama’s deputies. For example, those deputies widened the rules to provide asylum to Central American women who said their husbands physically abused them. The new regulation “does not ‘close loopholes’; it’s not ‘legally focused’, ‘technical’, or ‘somewhat vague’. It explicitly & unambiguously shuts off asylum to the vast majority of people who deserve it under current law,” said a tweet from a California immigration lawyer.

'A newly resurfaced November 2015 memo from a senior Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) official calls the Black Lives Matter Movement "radical," and offers Democratic House candidates suggestions for how to handle activists who attempt to approach their campaigns.

The secretive document, first leaked in 2016 by the hacker "Guccifer 2.0," was characterized as insensitive and condescending at the time. Now, as Democrats are confronted with a newly resurgent Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement that has led politicians to kneel in kente cloths and changed free speech norms across the country, the memo threatens to undermine their stated commitment to reform following the in-custody death of George Floyd.

"This document should not be emailed or handed to anyone outside of the building," the memo from Troy Perry, a top DCCC official, begins. "Please only give campaign staff these best practices in meetings or over the phone."

Fired State Department IG Sent Confidential Info to His Personal Email Accounts

The State Department inspector general whose recent dismissal ignited a political firestorm sent copies detailing a sensitive investigation to his personal email account, according to a probe into his conduct run by the Defense Department's inspector general. The inquiry report, dated March 17, confirms that fired State Department inspector general Steve Linick was the subject of a broad investigation related to the leaks of politically charged materials to journalists, specifically a draft evaluation report into Brian Hook, the State Department’s top Iran official. The report, which was provided to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, concluded that while Linick was permitted to send information to his personal email account to facilitate access while traveling, he was the only official in that office to have done so. The disclosure is likely to raise new questions about Linick’s suspected role in leaking sensitive information to the press. Linick’s firing generated harsh criticism from Democrats and many in the media, with opponents of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo alleging the former IG was canned for his efforts to investigate allegations of impropriety related to Pompeo and his staff. The Trump administration, however, has maintained that Linick’s firing was justified. Details of the highly sensitive investigation into Hook—involving unsubstantiated allegations that Hook fired officials he saw as insufficiently hawkish on Iran—were leaked to the media without authorization, according to the DOD investigation. The DOD investigation into Linick found that between March 2019 and September 2019 Linick sent 23 emails containing confidential work products from inside the State Department email system to his personal Gmail account. Eight of the emails Linick sent to himself, which were forwarded over a six-day period, contained copies of the incomplete probe into Hook. Linick was the only State Department employee from the IG’s office to email drafts of the evaluation outside the department, according to the report. The DOD IG did not find evidence that Linick leaked the evaluation to journalists. Nevertheless, the revelation is likely to fuel criticism of Linick’s conduct.

State Department officials close to Pompeo said that Linick was fired in part for refusing to allow an independent probe to be conducted into his actions. Linick was ordered by superiors to report the unauthorized leaks to the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency, according to Brian Bulatao, the undersecretary of state for management and a close ally of Pompeo’s. Bulatao alleged that Linick did not obey this order, instead selecting his own peer reviewer. Additionally, Linick allegedly refused to share the results of this investigation with the State Department. A Republican congressional staffer familiar with the investigation said there is increasing evidence that Linick was the source of the unauthorized leaks about Hook. "They used official and unofficial channels to make sure the report into Hook was flagged for multiple parties on and off the Hill, guaranteeing that it would eventually leak," according to the source, who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon on background about the investigation. "They used private accounts that ensured they could cover their tracks. This was a hit job."

Federal employees are generally prohibited from moving official documents into their personal email accounts for security concerns and the potential for unauthorized leaks. The State Department investigated similar claims about former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who violated department rules by using a homebrewed server to store sensitive and confidential information. Parts of the DOD’s IG report, including the names of over a dozen officials interviewed in connection with the investigation into Linick, remain redacted.

Westpac could face more allegations of breaches as AUSTRAC digs deeper

The financial crimes watchdog will conduct a deeper probe into Westpac over its failure to properly vet international transactions potentially linked to child exploitation that could increase by over 20 times the number of alleged breaches of anti-money laundering laws the bank faces.

The country's second largest bank was thrown into turmoil last November when the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) accused it of breaching anti-money laundering laws over 23 million times, including a failure to properly vet payments potentially linked to paedophilia.

The lawsuit led to the resignation of chief executive Brian Hartzer and the early retirement of veteran chairman Lindsay Maxsted. Furious shareholders also voted for a second strike against the bank's executive pay report at its AGM.

In the wake of the scandal, the bank reviewed its payments monitoring processes and updated its technology to betterdetect evidence of payments potentially linked to paedophilia. This resulted in the discovery of an additional 272 customers with payment transaction patterns that were indicative of child exploitation and Westpac self-reported these to AUSTRAC in December.

The regulator informed Westpac it will further probe these transactions and may broaden its lawsuit to include additional anti-money laundering breaches if any are found.

Westpac has indicated it will not defend a substantial majority of the initial breaches alleged by AUSTRAC and has set aside $900 million to cover an expected penalty. It is unclear if this provision will now need to be increased as the bank braces to receive the largest fine in Australian corporate history.

Flanked by several officers, Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best entered the East Precinct Thursday morning for the first time in days.

“The command for us to leave was so quick we weren’t even able to get our equipment out of here,” said Best, who wants the precinct back.

Hundreds of protesters occupied the area Tuesday in Capitol Hill. Police thought marchers would simply pass through.

But now, there is no official plan or timeline for the city or SPD to take it all back.

“A lot of that is going to be predicated on how we can get people back in here peacefully last thing we want is some sort of confrontation,” Best said.

City officials are trying to quickly broker a deal but because there is no centralized leadership among protesters, getting all the voices at the table remains a challenge.

Good cop, bad cop

Complaints about police officers loafing in congressman’s office during looting sparks outrage from City Hall.

It is a sad time to be a good cop in America.

Because no matter what a good cop does, a bad cop shows up.

A good cop stands nose to nose with an angry protester spitting insults and he or she doesn’t flinch; then a bad cop knocks down a 70-something-year-old man who is trying to support the new civil rights movement.

A good cop takes a knee, or hugs a protester, or marches lock-step with a crowd of young blacks under the “Black Lives Matter” banner, then a bad cop gives the whole world the finger by flipping off a protester in a crowd where everyone is live-streaming every step.

So the allegation that Chicago police officers made themselves at home in Congressman Bobby Rush’s burglarized campaign office located in a South Side strip mall that was being looted is not as shocking as it is galling.

According to Rush, 13 Chicago police officers — including three supervisors — slept on a couch, popped popcorn and drank coffee while looters ransacked the strip mall where Rush’s campaign office is located.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot has vowed to track down the officers involved. Discipline will be forthcoming.

“You know who you are. You know what you did. Don’t make us come find you,” the mayor said, during an emotional news conference.

While she’s at it, maybe she could track down the police officers that should have been at the Jewel-Osco store on 75th Street and Stony Island Avenue when it was being looted in broad daylight on June 1.

The looting was so brazen, with people calmly entering the store and exiting the grocery store pushing overflowing shopping carts, it looked like a fire sale.

There wasn’t a cop in sight.

According to the mayor, the police officers that were in Rush’s campaign office in the Grand Boulevard Plaza at 54th and Wentworth for “four or five” hours “came in and out,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

I have to digress here: Are bad cops just dumb cops?

I mean, shouldn’t they have known the congressman’s campaign office would have a security camera? Even if there is a legitimate explanation as to why the police officers were holed up in the congressman’s campaign office while all hell was breaking loose next door, shouldn’t at least one supervisor have reached out to the congressman to explain the circumstances?

The irony is striking.

In the midst of a violent uprising, where property was being stolen and/or destroyed, these cops chose to camp out in the office of not just a congressman, but a former ranking member of the Black Panther Party.

Is there anyone in America who doesn’t know about the enmity that existed between the Black Panther Party and police?

Rush certainly hasn’t forgotten.

“They even had the unmitigated gall to go and make coffee for themselves and to pop popcorn—my popcorn, in my microwave—while looters were tearing apart businesses within their sight, within their reach. They were in a moment of relaxation and they didn’t care about what was happening to business people in this city. They absolutely didn’t care,” he said.

Talk about baptism by fire.

First, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown had to bear the brunt of the criticism leveled at the mayor over how police officers were deployed during the violent protests—decisions that left some neighborhoods on the South and West sides without grocery stores and pharmacies.

Now he has to punish his troops for taking naps, popping popcorn and drinking coffee during the worst spate of civil unrest this city has endured since the 60’s.

Following a decision by Wyoming prosecutors not to charge retired Bishop Joseph Hart for sexual abuse against minors, his alleged victims are looking to the Church’s canonical process as a last chance for the 88-year-old prelate to be brought to justice.

As first reported by the Kansas City Star on Tuesday, and confirmed by Crux on Wednesday, a Wyoming witness coordinator informed one of Hart’s accusers that the prosecutor would not advance the case, citing insufficient evidence. This comes nearly two years after the Diocese of Cheyenne deemed the allegations from the same individual to be credible in 2018.

In a statement on Thursday, Bishop Steven Biegler, the current bishop of Cheyenne, said he stands by the diocese’s determination and noted that Hart’s case is still under review in Rome.

The victim told Crux that he found the news “mind-boggling,” citing a conversation with detectives two years ago who assured him that criminal charges would be brought against Hart and even being told that they have “more files on Hart than they possess for double homicide cases.”

White House's top lawyer at the Supreme Court to resign

(Reuters) - The U.S. government's top advocate before the Supreme Court, Noel Francisco, who defended President Donald Trump's policies, including the travel ban on people from mainly Muslim countries, is expected to resign, according to a person familiar with his plans. That would mark the second departure of a senior Justice Department official in two days, following Wednesday's news that the top prosecutor overseeing its criminal division, Brian Benczkowski, is leaving his post early next month. The Justice Department and Attorney General William Barr have faced criticism for recent moves seen as prioritizing Trump's close friends and allies, including its ongoing effort to drop a criminal charge against Michael Flynn a former top adviser who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

Since 2017, Francisco has led the Office of the Solicitor General, a division of the Justice Department that defends government policies against legal challenges. Francisco, like Benczkowski, had been planning to leave his post this summer for quite some time, according to the person familiar with his plans, who asked to remain anonymous because it has not been publicly announced yet. Francisco’s top deputy, Jeff Wall, is expected to serve as acting solicitor general while the White House searches for a replacement, the person added. A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Francisco's planned departure comes as the Supreme Court nears the end of a term that began in October 2019. Francisco won a notable victory in defending Trump’s travel ban on people from six predominantly Muslim countries entering the United States, which the court upheld in 2018 in a 5-4 decision. Francisco also argued in favor of Trump's bid to dismantle a program that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants - dubbed "Dreamers" - who entered the United States illegally as children. The Supreme Court is expected to rule in that case in the next month. Francisco is a longtime Washington lawyer with strong conservative credentials. Fact #3: Though better data collection is necessary, multiple studies suggest that race is not a factor in deadly force decisions by police officers. What’s more, only 8 out of 1,000 fatal police shooting incidents in 2019 involved individuals reported as “unarmed” black people. The term “unarmed” does not imply that there was insufficient legal basis for police to use deadly force, only that media reports indicated the person was unarmed.

Fact #4: The Department of Justice, while President Barack Obama was still in office, determined that the “hands up, don’t shoot” rallying cry, popularized after the shooting death of Michael Brown, was a manufactured narrative. The DOJ report further determined that Brown attempted to disarm the police officer and that the officer acted in reasonable self-defense.

Explosion at Museum District bar shakes homes miles away

HOUSTON — A fire and explosion at a bar in the Houston Museum District shook homes miles away early Friday morning.

This happened just before 5 a.m. at Bar 5015 in the 5100 block of Almeda. Residents said the explosion could be felt as far away as the Texas Southern University campus.

Houston police said the explosion happened after the bar closed, so they don't believe anyone was inside. The bar had closed at 11 p.m.

A KHOU 11 News crew at the scene reports that the area is littered with debris from the explosion and smells of strong gas.

Police said they believe there's no threat to the public at this time. It has not been confirmed if gas was the cause of the explosion. Arson investigators are on scene now.

The explosion damaged several buildings nearby, including a soul food restaurant and a barbecue food truck that had a partnership with the bar. The food truck was destroyed in the explosion, the owner of the business said.

The owner of the food truck said the bar had just reopened a few weeks ago after doing some renovations. He added that the bar's owner is distraught and heartbroken over the loss.

Some residents in apartments nearby said the windows had been shattered during the explosion.

Motorists also advised to avoid the area as police have several streets closed off. The area between Wichita Street and Southmore Boulevard just west of Highway 288 is closed at this time.

Seattle mayor says illegal for Trump to send military to clear protesters

SEATTLE (Reuters) - The mayor of Seattle said on Thursday it would be unconstitutional and illegal for U.S. President Donald Trump to send military forces into the city to clear protesters occupying a neighborhood, as he has suggested.

But Mayor Jenny Durkan, speaking at an afternoon press conference, did not say how or when authorities would remove the roughly 500 demonstrators who have established a makeshift encampment behind barricades in the Capitol Hill district.

“It is unconstitutional and illegal to send the military into Seattle,” said Durkan, a first-term Democrat. “There is no imminent threat of an invasion of Seattle.”

Activists have occupied the area since police on Monday moved street barricades and abandoned their East Precinct station in a move city officials say aimed to reduce tension.

In a Youtube video, Seattle's police chief, Carmen Best, said it was not her decision to leave the precinct.

“You fought for days to protect it, I asked you stand on that line day in and day out to be pelted with projectiles, to be screamed at, threatened and in some cases hurt,” Best told her department in the video published on its Youtube page.

Protesters used the police barricades to section off the area, calling it the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.”

“We’re not going to let this happen in Seattle. If we have to go in, we’re going to go in,” Trump told Fox News on Thursday.

“Let the governor do it. He’s got great National Guard troops ... But one way or the other, it’s going to get done. These people are not going to occupy a major portion of a great city.”

On Sunday, a man drove his car into a crowd of protesters in the area that became the “autonomous zone” the following day. He then shot and wounded a demonstrator who confronted him as he came to a stop, according to police and eyewitness video.

The man who was shot was in stable condition at a hospital while the driver was arrested.

Major U.S. cities have been convulsed by marches, rallies and sometimes violence for more than two weeks over the death of a black man, 46-year-old George Floyd, while in Minneapolis police custody. A bystander recorded video of the now-dismissed officer holding a knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

“What we have been given here is a unique opportunity to see how a police-free zone can be facilitated,” protester David Lewis told Reuters, standing in front of the abandoned East Precinct.

Work fag here wanted to report on normies waking up. Yesterday I had a client call me from NYC who told me after 8 years, he's moving out and he couldn't wait to get out of there in 3 weeks. He also expressed to me that he felt "this is conspiracy level shit", that he is not wearing a mask anymore anywhere and that he did at 1st, but once he saw it was okay for protestors to go out without masks, but not okay for restaurants to be open, he saw it was bullshit.

Another client expressed to me that his wife who hated Trump, loves him now and she sees everything that is going on and says it's about control. She realizes he is now fighting for us and if he doesn't win in November "we're screwed".

I don't start these conversations with these clients, they usually bring it up when I let them know about how our business is handling COVID just so they know what to expect when they come in. I thought this was promising and anons might appreciate it. Off to work fag for now.

Longell and three other active duty soldiers who spoke to Just the News report wanting neutrality and unity from senior leaders, including those who are retired.

Said Longell: “As a veteran who has tremendous respect for many of these leaders, it is with a painful feeling of disbelief and disappointment that I watch them now become tools of the very dangerous flames of political opportunism which threaten our great republic."

Some community leaders are calling on the Sacramento City Council to defund the police department.

Several, including council member-elect Katie Valenzuela and city council candidate Les Simmons, said the $10 million proposed in the budget for police should be spent on other community programs and services.

According to the city’s proposed budget, set to go into effect July 1, a document outlining budgets for departments across the city, including police, said the department will see a $10 million budget increase.

But, the city said the document doesn’t tell the whole story, saying the information is outdated.

A spokesperson for the city said the document doesn’t reflect $7.4 million spent to replace police vehicles and labor increase, bringing the fiscal year 2020 budget to $154.4 million.

That changes the year-to-year increase from $10 million to $2.9 million.

Danny Roman, a Mexican Mafia member who controlled swaths of South Los Angeles from various prison cells throughout California, was stabbed to death Wednesday at a substance abuse treatment facility in Corcoran, the state prison system said Thursday.

Around 11 a.m., two inmates — Raul Alvarado and Edward Cisneros — began stabbing Roman in the body and face, according to a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Roman, 64, was taken to the prison’s medical facility and pronounced dead.

Alvarado, 47, is a Mexican Mafia member from Lennox known as “Spy,” according to a source who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity. The source said Alvarado and Cisneros attacked Roman on the facility’s yard.

Protesters from the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” on Thursday shouted down a group of black women who accused them of hijacking the Black Lives Matter.

Members of the African American Community Advisory Council, which works with the Seattle Police department to improve policing in the city, spoke out in the Chaz Zone on Thursday, according to a report from Komo News.

“The thing is, you have hijacked this!” one woman said. “You have taken the meaning away!”

Other videos of what appeared to be the same conversation were posted on social media.

Another woman asked the protesters to sit down with the police force to improve their communities.

Wearing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt, AACAC Chair Victoria Beach complained the CHAZ movement had become like a Burning Man festival.

“How are we going to be heard if that’s happening?” she asked. “How are we going to come to the table and talk?”

WSJ: Business Groups Fighting Trump’s Visa Reform Want ‘Carve Out’ Loopholes

Business groups are still fighting President Donald Trump’s draft plan to create jobs for Americans by temporarily closing three pipelines of foreign visa workers, the Wall Street Journal reported on June 11.

“Senior officials at the White House, the Department of Homeland Security and the Labor Department have been working for several months on the recommendations, which they plan to bring to the president for final signoff as soon as this week, the people familiar with the talks said,” according to the WSJ, which added:

Administration officials said the president hasn’t yet signed off on the plan, adding that it could change as senior aides continue to discuss the matter.

The administration is also considering a broader carve-out allowing employers to hire [visa workers] if they can prove they can’t hire Americans for a given job.

The reform would temporarily block the pipelines which deliver H-1B and L-1 professionals and J-1 seasonal workers to many employers, including Disney and T-Mobile. The three programs keep roughly 700,000 foreign white collar and 100,000 foreign blue collar workers in jobs throughout the United States — even as millions of Americans are looking for good jobs in the coronavirus crash.

But corporate lobbyists, CEOs, and investors — plus their allies in the White House — have already delayed and narrowed the visa reforms by four years.

“I will end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labor program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program,” Trump said in March 2016. “No exceptions.” He followed up on Inauguration Day by promising a “Hire American” economic policy.

Multiple sources say the business groups are now pushing for exemptions and loopholes that would preserve the many pipelines that keep roughly 1.3 million foreign graduates in jobs needed by U.S. graduates.

For example, officials are not planning to tighten the B-1 pipeline, which companies use to import white collar workers under the guise of training programs.

The Journal reported officials are “considering a broader carve-out allowing employers to hire immigrants if they can prove they can’t hire Americans for a given job.”

“If that’s included, the entire exercise will be meaningless, just window-dressing,” said a tweet from Mark Krikorian, the director of the Center for Immigration Studies. He added:

Also, if the order includes “incentives” for hiring Americans in lieu of suspending visas, it will be B.S. Congress included empty political ass-covering like that in [the H-1B law]. The only incentive that can work is simply not to be able to hire the foreign workers in the first place.

Another possible loophole would preserve the pipeline of visa workers by creating small incentives for companies to hire Americans, Krikorian said.

But business groups strongly support the labor pipelines for both management and financial reasons.

The flood of extra workers helps raise stock values by dropping the nationwide price of professional skills, especially among subcontractors.

It also delivers a compliant and disposable white collar labor force to the coastal executives at Fortune 500 companies and many healthcare companies. This gig worker labor force of modestly skilled workers minimizes the need for executives to hire and manage independent American professionals.

But the executives’ discriminatory exclusion of American graduates and professionals shrivels the innovation needed by the nation to counter the growing threat from government-backed Chinese companies. This exclusion is also creating an increasing population of educated but downwardly mobile and alienated young men and women.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking information on the whereabouts of a Webster City man wanted on charges related to child pornography.

Brady Joseph Vandemark, 35, was indicted on Sept. 19, 2019 by the United State District Court, Northern District of Iowa in Sioux City for distribution of child pornography, receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography. A federal warrant was issued for his arrest.

Authorities believe Vandemark may be living in the Webster City area and was last seen in Webster City on May 3.

Vandemark is described as 5-foot, 11-inches, weighing 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

Those with information on Vandemark are asked to contact the Omaha field office of the FBI at (402) 493-8688.

Iowa Moves to Block Sending Out Unsolicited Mail-In Ballot Applications

Iowa is moving to block the Secretary of State from sending out unsolicited mail-in ballot applications to all registered voters ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Republicans in the Iowa State Senate passed legislation this week that would bar Secretary of State Paul Pate (R) from sending out mail-in ballot applications to registered voters who did not first request an application, according to the Des Moines Register:

After more than two hours of emotional debate Wednesday, Iowa Senate Republicans passed a wide-ranging election bill that would prohibit the secretary of state from mailing absentee ballot request forms without first receiving a request from a voter. [Emphasis added]

“(With the) secretary of state, we have no checks and balances,” Sen. Roby Smith, R-Davenport, said. “And I know today you like what he did. A future secretary of state, in the future, may do something you don’t like.” [Emphasis added]

The measure comes after Pate sent out mail-in ballot applications, unsolicited, to about two million registered voters in Iowa for the state’s June 2 primary. The result was that more than eight-in-ten voters in Iowa voted by absentee.

Recent data has not shown a compelling public health justification for mail-in voting. In Wisconsin’s April election, only 52 of more than 400,000 voters and poll workers were confirmed to have contracted the Chinese coronavirus. None of those cases were fatal. This equals an infection rate below two-hundredths of one percent

A federal judge, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, says federal immigration agents arresting criminal illegal aliens at New York state courthouses is “illegal.”

United States District Court Judge Jed Rakoff ruled on Wednesday that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must not arrest criminal illegal aliens as they are leaving court in New York. He wrote:

Specifically, the Court declares ICE’s policy of courthouse arrests … to be illegal, and hereby enjoins ICE from conducting any civil arrests on the premises or grounds of New York State courthouses, as well as such arrests of anyone required to travel to a New York State courthouse as a party or witness to a lawsuit.

Attorneys for New York state and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez had filed suit against ICE for arresting criminal illegal aliens at courthouses. In 2019, ICE agents took 173 illegal aliens into custody at courthouses. In 2018, they arrested 107 illegal aliens at courthouses.

The attorneys and Gonzalez complained that illegal aliens had become stricken with fear

“According to plaintiffs, not only do these immigration arrests make certain parties and witnesses fear coming to court, but the temporary chaos they create disrupts court proceedings and makes it impossible for judges to do their jobs effectively,”

The court ruling could have widespread implications on ICE’s already limited ability to arrest and deport illegal aliens. Last year, ICE agents arrested more than 143,000 illegal aliens and deported nearly 268,000 illegal aliens. There remain anywhere between 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the U.S.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York. The case number is 19-cv-8876.
