U.S. Attorney General William Barr has blamed Antifa — a militant "anti-fascist" movement — for the violence that has erupted at George Floyd protests across the United States. "The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly," he said.

Barr also said that the federal government has evidence that Antifa "hijacked" legitimate protests around the country to "engage in lawlessness, violent rioting, arson, looting of businesses, and public property assaults on law enforcement officers and innocent people, and even the murder of a federal agent." Earlier, U.S. President Donald J. Trump had instructed the U.S. Justice Department to designate Antifa as a terrorist organization.

Academics and media outlets sympathetic to Antifa have argued that the group cannot be classified as a terrorist organization because, they claim, it is a vaguely-defined protest movement that lacks a centralized structure. Mark Bray, a vocal apologist for Antifa in America and author of the book "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook," asserts that Antifa "is not an overarching organization with a chain of command."

Empirical and anecdotal evidence shows that Antifa is, in fact, highly networked, well-funded and has a global presence. It has a flat organizational structure with dozens and possibly hundreds of local groups. Not surprisingly, the U.S. Department of Justice is currently investigating individuals linked to Antifa as a step to unmasking the broader organization.

In the United States, Antifa's ideology, tactics and goals, far from being novel, are borrowed almost entirely from Antifa groups in Europe, where so-called anti-fascist groups, in one form or another, have been active, almost without interruption, for a century.

What is Antifa?

Antifa can be described as a transnational insurgency movement that endeavors, often with extreme violence, to subvert liberal democracy, with the aim of replacing global capitalism with communism. Antifa claims to oppose "fascism," a term it often uses as a broad-brush pejorative to discredit those who hold opposing political beliefs. The traditional meaning of "fascism" as defined by Webster's Dictionary is "a totalitarian governmental system led by a dictator and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism, militarism, and often racism."

Antifa holds the Marxist-Leninist definition of fascism which equates it with capitalism. "The fight against fascism is only won when the capitalist system has been shattered and a classless society has been achieved," according to the German Antifa group, Antifaschistischer Aufbau München.

Should George Floyd Be Put on a Pedestal?

Despite all the observances memorializing George Floyd, you may not have heard the most relevant facts. Mr. Floyd was not the innocent victim that has been portrayed. As a narcotics user, porn star, and violent felon, is he really the kind of role model we want for our children?

Cause of Death: Fentanyl and Meth

Asphyxiation was NOT the cause of Mr. Floyd's death. The Hennepin County Attorney stated that he "had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease. The combined effects of [police restraint], his underlying health conditions, and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death." [1] The medical examiner found "no life-threatening injuries". [2] Right away this undermines the police brutality narrative. The toxicology report reveals that Mr. Floyd was high on deadly narcotics at the time of death, with a fentanyl concentration of 11 ng/mL (four times a lethal dose), norfentanyl 5.6 ng/mL, methamphetamine 19 ng/mL, morphine 86 ng/mL, and marijuana metabolites. His blood also contained 4-ANPP, an impurity found in fentanyl preparations. From this, one might conclude that George Floyd killed himself!

Violent Criminal History

“What is not being told is the violent criminal history of George Floyd. The media will not air this,” police union president Bob Kroll told his members. [4] Mr. Floyd had been incarcerated for five years in 2009 for an assault and robbery, and had previously been behind bars 4 times for offenses ranging from theft with a firearm to drugs. [5]

Mr. Floyd also starred in numerous amateur porn videos using the name "Floyd The Landlord." [3]

Meanwhile, other Black police officers died maintaining order during the ensuing riots, and their sacrifice has largely been ignored.

AmEx Wins Clearing License for China’s $27 Trillion Market

American Express Co. received approval to start bank card clearing services in China, making it the first foreign payments network to be allowed to process local currency transactions in one of the world’s largest markets.

The People’s Bank of China granted a network clearing license to American Express’s China joint venture, Express (Hangzhou) Technology Services Co., the central bank said in a statement on Saturday. The company, which won initial approval in 2018, is required to start the clearing service within six months, according to the statement.

The approval marks a win for the card giant amid rising political tension between the U.S. and China sparked by the coronavirus outbreak and a crackdown on Hong Kong. It underscores China’s commitment to opening its $45 trillion financial markets this year, in a bid to attract foreign capital and support growth.

AmEx will face large domestic competitors and a well-developed market for mobile payments. Mobile transactions topped 190 trillion yuan ($27 trillion) in China in 2018, making it the world’s largest such market, according to iResearch. Ant Financial’s Alipay and Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s WeChat Pay are the dominant firms.

China had 8.5 billion bank cards in circulation at the end of September, with over 90% of them debit cards.

The approval is welcome news for New York-based AmEx. Spending on the firm’s cards in May was down in the mid-30% from a year earlier, after a 45% decline in March. The company set aside $2.6 billion in provisions for losses in the first quarter, while its shares have fallen 18% this year. China committed to speeding up access to its market for card companies as part of the phase one U.S. trade deal signed earlier this year. It’s been a long process since the nation in June 2015 opened to licensing foreign firms to end a monopoly by state-run China UnionPay Co. Mastercard Inc. in February won initial approval to set up its bank card clearing business in China, while progress has been slow for Visa Inc.

The opening to card companies is part of a broader plan by China to give access to its markets, which also includes insurance, asset management and investment banking. BlackRock Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. are among a bevy of firms that are preparing to pile in full bore to capture profits from China’s fast-growing wealth.

Unarmed professionals will now respond to non-criminal police calls in San Francisco to reduce 'police confrontations'

Police will no longer respond to non-criminal calls, San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced as part of a set of policies to address structural inequities.

"San Francisco has made progress reforming our police department, but we know that we still have significant work to do," Breed said in a statement. "We know that a lack of equity in our society overall leads to a lot of the problems that police are being asked to solve. We are going to keep pushing for additional reforms and continue to find ways to reinvest in communities that have historically been underserved and harmed by systemic racism."

Breed's plan, which will be rolled out in the upcoming months, also includes addressing police bias and strengthening accountability, demilitarizing the police, and promoting economic justice. The goal is to limit police confrontations, and comes a few weeks after protests began across the country following the killing of George Floyd — including calls to reform, defund, or abolish the police.

The city will divert non-violent calls from the police department to "non-law enforcement agencies," according to the statement.

According to the Los Angeles Times, trained and unarmed professionals will respond to calls involving mental health, the homeless, school discipline, and neighbor disputes.

"Over the next year, the City will develop a systematic response plan to improve direct connection to community-based or City service providers," the statement said.

The system would mirror the CAHOOTS program in Eugene, Oregon. According to High Country News, the program uses a medic and a mental health crisis manager to respond to emergency mental health, homelessness, and addiction calls.

Additionally, according to the LA Times, the program Oregon also features a "mobile crisis intervention unit," which "performs welfare checks and works with nonprofits to offer suicide intervention and prevention."

"For too long, black people have been subjected to violence at the hands of people in power," Breed said during a panel Thursday on racial justice broadcast online, according to the Times. "Now is the time when we can make sure that these demonstrations that we see are translated into real action."

Breed's proposal would also ban the city police department from using tear gas in non-criminal settings, as well as redirect money to "programs and organizations that serve communities that have been systematically harmed by past City policies," Insider previously reported.

"Decades of disinvestment in the African-American community and racially disparate policies in San Francisco have exacerbated disproportionate harm in Black communities," the mayor's office said, "affecting outcomes from health and wellness to housing insecurity and economic outcomes."

A Cook County judge ruled that new charges filed against the actor do not violate Smollett's constitutional protection against double jeopardy. Back in Mar. 2019, there was bipartisan outrage after Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx abruptly dropped the original 16-felony-count indictment against the actor and wiped his record clean.

Following Foxx's recusal from the case text messages came to light showing Foxx had communicated with a powerful ally of the Smollett family a special prosecutor was appointed to the case. The new prosecutor secured a new six-count indictment charging Smollett with lying to police officers about a fake hate crime he claimed was perpetrated by supporters of President Trump.

The actor filed a police report claiming he was attacked in Jan. 2019 by two MAGA-hat-wearing thugs who wrapped a noose around his neck and shouted racial and homophobic epithets as they poured chemicals over his body. Smollett's hate crime turned out to be a complete hoax when the two so-called attackers revealed that Smollett had actually hired the duo to stage the fake attack.

Banks Have Moved Gold Trading From New York to London, LBMA Says

Group is looking at ways to make OTC market more efficient

An extreme dislocation in the global gold market earlier this year spurred banks to shift some positions out of New York futures and into the London over-the-counter market, according to a leading figure in the industry.

Market participants’ changing behavior is reflected in gold trading volumes in the two hubs, said London Bullion Market Association Chief Executive Officer Ruth Crowell. The amount of gold traded in the U.K.’s capital surpassed the U.S. futures market in recent months, she said.

The gold market, which is dominated by big banks like JPMorgan Chase & Co., HSBC Holdings Plc, and UBS Group AG, was upended in late March as lockdowns grounded planes and closed refineries, leading traders to worry they wouldn’t be able to get gold to New York in time to deliver against futures contracts. That caused futures, which typically trade in lockstep with the London spot price, to soar to a premium of as much as $70 an ounce.

The dislocation inflicted painful losses on banks, which typically sell futures in New York as a hedge for their positions in the London OTC market. HSBC, for example, suffered mark-to-market losses of close to $200 million in one day, according to a regulatory filing.

“The scale of the dislocation has really made everyone ask questions in terms of the ongoing approach of hedging long London, short Comex,” Crowell said in a phone interview. “Certainly in the short to medium future, it’s not an even hedge. So they’re having to either go OTC, or they’re reducing their trading appetite.”

The London market, which the LBMA represents, has historically been the main hub for trading in spot gold. But volumes of swaps and forwards, which traders can use as a hedging mechanism instead of Comex futures, have increased recently, according to LBMA data. While the volumes remain below those in the futures market, they have risen to the highest relative level in records going back to November 2018.

Crowell pointed to a day of record trading volume in the London market on May 26 when 67 million ounces of gold, worth $115 billion, changed hands as evidence of some traders shifting positions into the London market.

If it is sustained, the shift risks undermining the popularity of the gold contract on New York’s Comex, which is owned by CME Group Inc. and is the world’s leading venue for trading precious-metals futures and options.

The gold contract is performing “as designed,” a spokesman for CME said by email. “We continue to work with market participants to evolve our offerings and continue to ensure our products deliver the most liquid, cost effective and transparent risk management tools.”

The U.S. exchange responded to the turbulence in March by launching a new contract that allows delivery of 400-ounce bars, the form traded in London, as well as the 100-ounce and kilobars allowed under the main futures contract. But the new contract has barely traded.

Crowell said that market participants were discussing issues with the Comex including allowing delivery of gold in London, and she expected there could be an announcement from the U.S. exchange in the next month or so.

In the meantime, the LBMA is exploring ways to make the London market more efficient following the dislocation, she said. That could include reviewing price discovery for the spot price, which until now has often been derived from Comex.

The London Metal Exchange launched contracts for spot gold three years ago in a bid to take a slice of the world’s top OTC market and provide an alternative to Comex. But the bourse’s volumes are still just a fraction of the New York trade.

Avenatti Renews Bid to Send Stormy Daniels Theft Case to California, Citing Pandemic-Related Concerns

The embattled celebrity attorney, who was convicted in February of trying to extort Nike Inc., on Thursday renewed his bid to transfer the case charging him with stealing money from his former client, adult-film star Stormy Daniels, from New York to Los Angeles.

Michael Avenatti has again asked a Manhattan federal judge to transfer his pending criminal case to California, where he is also under federal indictment, arguing that complications from the COVID-19 pandemic made it impractical to proceed with separate trials on two coasts.

The embattled celebrity attorney, who was convicted in February of trying to extort Nike Inc., on Thursday renewed his bid to transfer the case charging him with stealing money from his former client, adult-film star Stormy Daniels, from New York to Los Angeles.

He is also accused in the Central District of California of stealing millions of dollars from former clients and then submitting false tax returns.

Avenatti, who rose to prominence representing Daniels in her lawsuits against President Donald Trump, argued in a six-page transfer motion that both cases should be tried together, due to the strains on judicial resources resulting from the pandemic.

“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no compelling reason to proceed with two separate trials on two different coasts. The conservation of judicial and juror resources, as well as the protection of the public from exposure to SARS-CoV-2, are paramount,” wrote attorney Thomas Warren, of Warren Terzian in Los Angeles.

The late U.S. District Judge Deborah A. Batts of the Southern District of New York denied a similar request by Avenatti and his lawyer, H. Dean Steward, last September, finding that a move to consolidate the two cases likely would create more problems than it would solve. Consolidation, she said, would not be automatic, and a transfer would require the New York prosecution team to relocate for a time to the West Coast.

West Point Mourns the Passing of C.J. Morgan

Cadet Christopher J. Morgan, Class of 2020 and member of the wrestling team, died due to injuries sustained from a military vehicle accident in the U.S. Military Academy's training area.

"Cadet C.J. Morgan was a valued member of the Corps of Cadets and will be missed by all. The entire community is ensuring that our cadets are being cared for physically, emotionally, and spiritually," said Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, 60th Superintendent, U. S. Military Academy. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Morgan family."

Morgan, 22, of West Orange, New Jersey, passed away at the scene of the accident. He was a Law and Legal Studies major, and a recruited athlete who was a standout member of the Army wrestling team.

"We are devastated by the news of Chris' passing. He was a talented, hardworking, and determined athlete who loved his sport," said Army West Point wrestling coach Kevin Ward. "Chris had an infectious personality with a smile big enough to fill any room, and a heart big enough to love everyone around him. He made everyone around him better and he will be greatly missed."
