Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday that one of his daughters had been in “precautionary quarantine” for 14 days after a “possible” exposure to the coronavirus — adding that he believes there have been “thousands and thousands of cases walking around New York.”
Cuomo did not say which of his three daughters with ex-wife Kerry Kennedy had been quarantined — only that she no longer was.
“One of my daughters was in … precautionary quarantine for 14 days” after coming into contact with a coronavirus “hotspot” population, he said during an afternoon press conference on the status of COVID-19 response in New York.
“This is going to be everywhere,” he said of the virus. “This day-to-day count — we’re up two, we’re up seven — My guess is there are thousands and thousands of cases walking around New York.”
The vast majority “had symptoms, symptoms resolved, and moved on and never knew they had it.”
Of his formerly quarantined kid, Cuomo said, “That’s my daughter. That’s everything to me. That’s why I get up in the morning.
“I miss her,” he said at one point, suggesting that he hasn’t seen her since her precautionary quarantine ended.
Cuomo said his emotional response to his daughter’s possible infection was at odds with his knowledge of the facts about coronavirus — that young, healthy people are the least at risk for serious health effects.
Still, the governor said he asked himself, “Why didn’t I protect my daughter?” when in fact, “It’s impossible. It’s impossible… so I have to talk myself through the facts … My daughter was possibly exposed because you can’t control it.”
Had his 88-year-old mother, Matilda, been asked to quarantine herself, “Then I would have been more concerned,” he added. “So what am I doing? I’m taking more precautions with my mother.”
Cuomo has three daughters, twins Mariah and Cara, 25, and Michaela, 22.

Abe lays out plans to fight new coronavirus
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has laid out his government's plans to fight the new coronavirus. He discussed a newly enacted law that allows him to declare a state of emergency, if needed.
Abe said "This legislation is to prepare for emergencies. When the administration determines whether to declare a state of emergency, that would put restraint on various private rights. It will seek for recommendation from experts in making the decision carefully. Currently, the number of infections is still rising. However, the increase speed is slower compared with other countries where the speed of infection in accelerating. Given the situation, it is not necessary to declare a state of emergency now."
An emergency declaration would allow prefectural governors to order schools to close, and people to stay home. It would also enable governors to requisition land and buildings for emergency medical facilities - without the owners' consent.
It's been two weeks since Abe asked elementary and high-schools across the country to close temporarily. He said students should be allowed to go out to exercise and relieve stress.
Abe said "Schools are planning to have their graduation ceremonies. I would like them to carry out the ceremonies by implementing safety measures." The prime minister referred to the impact of the pandemic on Japan's economy, and on global markets. He said he will take all steps necessary to put the country's economy back on a steady growth track once the outbreak is contained.
Abe also promised to increase the capacity to conduct testing for the virus. Abe said " Within this month, it is expected that up to 8,000 people will be tested in a day. With these tests, so-called cluster-infections will be detected and responded early, and diagnosis will be available early also to prevent serious cases."
He said the government has secured more than 12,000 beds for patients at hospitals across the country that can treat infectious diseases. He added that the number of artificial respirators to treat patients in serious condition will be increased. Abe also mentioned the cruise ship that was docked near Tokyo.
Abe said "On the cruise ship of Diamond Princess, the quarantine of all the crews and passengers is expected to finish tomorrow. The battle against the invisible virus inside the ship whose total number of people onboard was more than 3,700 has been an unprecedented, extremely tough mission, but we have finished the quarantine for all."

US President Donald Trump has nominated the head of a conservative think tank as new ambassador to Japan.
The White House announced the choice of Kenneth Weinstein on Friday. Weinstein is the President and CEO of Hudson Institute and believed to have expertise on foreign policy and security issues.
He has close ties with Japanese political figures and met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe when he visited Japan in July. He has also frequently met with senior Japanese officials and researchers visiting Washington.

'Very secretive': Hidden coronavirus 'disaster' brewing in Syria
Syrian dictator Bashar Assad is allowing a “disastrous” coronavirus outbreak to fester due to his dependence on stricken Iran to win the long-running civil war, according to local reports and international observers. “It's very secretive,” MedGlobal founder Zaher Sahloul told the Washington Examiner. “If the epidemic spread in Syria, it would be disastrous, especially in the northwest.”
Sahloul, a U.S.-based doctor whose organization provides aid to civilians affected by the conflict, said that a prominent Syrian doctor revealed a case had been confirmed in a major Damascus hospital and then recanted after being detained by the regime. The MedGlobal founder thinks there could be 2,400 coronavirus cases that are currently being hidden by the regime. “Their thinking within the regime is that, if they volunteer this information, then that puts them under more pressure from their supporters,” he said. “There is all this pattern in Syria of covering up these issues or delaying the information until it gets out of control.”
Assad’s regime maintains that the country has no coronavirus cases, but officials in Pakistan say that some of the confirmed cases in their country originated in Syria. Some analysts believe that Iranian forces have carried the virus to Syria, as Tehran is providing the regime with ground troops even as American officials believe that the Iranian military is hampered by one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the world. “Iran sits in the middle of the theater, so their ability to pass that infection to other states is very worrisome,” Marine Corps Gen. Frank McKenzie, the commander of U.S. Central Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee this week. “I would say it’s going to have some effect on the military instrument.”
That military traffic is augmented by religious tourism, as Syria hosts holy sites in cities throughout regime-controlled territory. And the danger is exacerbated by Assad’s decision, with Russian military support, to attack hospitals in his campaign to regain control of the country. “You have the whole ingredient of a huge disaster and because, again, of the disintegration of the public healthcare system in Syria,” Zahloul said. “Why would you expect ... a government that is bombing hospitals and killing its own doctors to actually be a credible source of protection from this epidemic?”
The novel coronavirus, which originated in China late last year before developing into a global pandemic, could have a particularly devastating effect on the camps that hold millions of civilians who have fled the fighting. There are 3.5 million civilians in Idlib, the last rebel-held territory in the country. “Given the really horrible conditions, I think it would be a miracle if these displaced Syrians do not contract coronavirus,” Aykan Erdemir, a former Turkish parliamentarian and a senior analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told the Washington Examiner. “All three, meaning the Syrian regime and Russian and Iranian forces, have proven their complete indifference to such humanitarian worries.”
Zahloul held out the hope that Idlib might enjoy some insulation from the virus as people from elsewhere in the country avoid traveling into a war zone. “That will provide relative protection to that province,” he said. “But for the rest of Syria, because of the flow of travelers from Iran ... that would also make it more likely for the virus to spread.”

130 countries, territories restricting entry from virus-hit Korea
A total of 130 countries and territories were imposing an entry ban or strict quarantine procedures for travelers from South Korea as part of their moves to contain the new coronavirus Saturday, up three countries from a day earlier, according to the foreign ministry.
As of Saturday morning, 61 countries and territories, including Uzbekistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina, were barring the entry of travelers who have visited South Korea in the previous two weeks, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Uzbekistan was one of the three countries that introduced new border control measures against South Korea on the day. Starting Sunday, the entry of all non-Uzbekistan nationals traveling from Korea will be prohibited for two weeks due to the novel coronavirus infection.
Under their own new quarantine measures, Eritrea and Brazil will also start to quarantine travelers from overseas.

Long Island Woman Sentenced to 13 Years’ Imprisonment for Providing Material Support to ISIS
Earlier today, in federal court in Central Islip, Zoobia Shahnaz was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment by United States District Judge Joanna Seybert for providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically more than $150,000 to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), and attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS. Shahnaz pleaded guilty in November 2018.
John C. Demers, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, William F. Sweeney, Jr., Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI), and Dermot F. Shea, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD), announced the sentence.
As set forth in court filings and facts presented at the sentencing hearing, between March 2017 and July 2017, Shahnaz defrauded numerous financial institutions to obtain money for ISIS, including a loan for approximately $22,500. Shahnaz also fraudulently obtained more than a dozen credit cards and used them to purchase approximately $62,000 in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies online. Shahnaz then made multiple wire transfers totaling more than $150,000 to individuals and entities in Pakistan, China and Turkey that were fronts for ISIS

In a televized address to the nation on Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron announced school closures and urged people to avoid close contact for fear of spreading the virus, which has killed 79 people in France and infected more than 3,600.
Before that announcement Paris police had already rejected requests from protesters to demonstrate at prominent sites in the French capital.
The demonstration comes just a day before voters are set to go to the polls in local elections, in which Macron’s party is forecast to fare poorly.
The French president decided to press ahead with the elections despite schools and universities being shut and public transport curtailed due to contagion fears.
