There was a 6.3 from the nuke test itself. But the little earthquakes from those tunnels collapsing were in the 2 to 3 range. I did the math a while ago to work out how much total energy a Rod-from-God could have based on current heavy launchers and compared that to earthquake energies. It came out to about 2 terajoules. And that looked like around the right order or magnitude for the amount of energy the radiated away from that little quake. So it's plausible. But a 5.0 is 100 times larger. No way that's a RoG. It would have to be a nuke or (crazy thought...) an actual natural earthquake.

Last summer, USA Today reported that between the costs imposed by regulations and real estate prices and spiffs, such as fitness centers and homeless services, the costs for these homes are prohibitive:

"[The homeless] will receive keys to one of 72 new apartments,complete with a fitness center, in the heart of trendy Koreatown, built at a projected cost of $690,692 for each unit, according to the city controller's office. Two additional projects in the pre-approval phase are expected to top $700,000 per unit in total costs.

"This kind of cost is utterly unacceptable," Controller Ron Galperin said. "I believe we need a fundamental course correction."

The median cost of housing in LA is $618,000, less than most of the units are costing taxpayers.

But at the rate the city is building and with droves of homeless people making their way to California, there's a problem.

The Los Angeles Times reports that homeless advocates are already declaring the 118 projects as not enough:

"This is just the beginning,” said Elise Buik, president and chief executive of United Way of Greater Los Angeles, which was a major backer of Proposition HHH and the Measure H countywide sales tax for homeless services. The initial public campaign for the ballot measure had promised 10,000 units in 10 years. To meet that goal, the city would have to build another 300 housing units a year using other funding."

That's right, what they're building now is not going to be good enough.

LA residents will be asked for more than $1.2 billion:

"Even that goal of 10,000 units is now too small, as it was based on past homeless counts when the population was smaller. With the number of people living in tents and makeshift shelters on the city’s streets ballooning to 27,000 out of 36,000 overall, and the number of chronically homeless Angelenos increasing, the current pace of construction is not keeping up."

And there's more.

In addition to giving thousands of people housing, there will be the maintenance and upkeep and – oh yes – the rent subsidies that also come from the pockets of citizens:

"The mayor's office said monthly rents at the 88th and Vermont development will range from $473 for a studio unit to $703 per month for a three-bedroom apartment. Rent subsidies for tenants will be provided by a Los Angeles County Department subsidy pool program and the Housing Authority of the city of Los Angeles through housing vouchers."

A scathing audit last year found the costs of the housing to be outrageous and could have been put to better use building shelters.

In the meantime, the race in the City of Angels to build expensive condos for homeless people continues apace. And it will never be enough. As we learned from experience and in the microcosm of Middletown, Ohio (see my story nearby), if you build it and make it easy, soon you'll outstrip your supply of generosity.

No, the one I posted is a traditional TBM using hydraulic pressure and cutting wheelsscrapers. The nuclear-powered TBMs use a penetrator that looks like the engine cones off an SR-71. The penetrator is heated using a nuclear reactor and shoved into the rock face using a powerful ram which is also powered by the nuclear reactor. It creates enough heat inside the penetrator to liquefy rock on contact, and also creates outward pressure which shatters rock adjacent to the rock melted by the penetrator. The liquefied rock is forced into the cracks created by this process, and the end result is a tunnel lined with a tektike-like glass layer that is extremely durable. Think pyrex glass, but 10+ inches thick and forged into a perfect uniform crystal shaped like the tunnel.

The two questions I've always had about that concept are:

how do they overcome the extreme ground pressure at depth so that molten rock can be forced into those cracks? You're basically pushing a huge hydraulic cylinder against the liquid. The forward force would need to match pressure (rock is 2.7 dimes the density of water) multiplied by the area of the bore. If you want make a tunnel 1000ft deep and 30ft in dia, these numbers get big fast.

And how do cool this molten rock fast enough? Rock is a poor thermal conductor. And as seem in the above ground pressure calc, removing the supporting structure before the lining is solid is not an option. It would take many hours, maybe days, to cool

The temperatures at the depths they are forging these tunnels are not so high that the rock's plasticity is high enough for the rock to behave like a hydraulic fluid. It's solid enough that you can punch a hole through it without the overburden flattening the tunnel out right away-but there is some downward and inward pressure, and that's part of why the machine exerts immense outward pressure as it goes.

The support systems following the TBM include everything required for bringing the work site and completed tunnel linings to the necessary temperatures. As you might imagine, just like with a nuclear reactor for any other purpose, cooling is one of the most important and costly concerns. They exchange heat with the air outside the system using a liquid ammonia refrigeration piping system being pumped in and out at very high pressure. The entire TBM operation is incredibly fucking dangerous, should anything go wrong.

Many strata have oil andor gas trapped in them, and this isn't a huge problem for the TBM, as it can be managed with proper venting to the outside of the tunnel system. Hitting a larger pocket or a natural cavern or other void with the TBM would be a titanic disaster for the project and indicative of a massive engineering and planning failure that would likely cost the lives of everyone operating inside the system at the time of the breech. Basically, losing pressure due to the TBM breaking into a void would destroy the TBM, and if the void contained a massive quantity of oil, gas, or another fluid, that fluid would enter the TBM tunnel and that would be a catastrophe like you cannot imagine.

A handful of leftist politicians in California recently introduced a new bill that they claim will “end blatant discrimination against LGBT young people regarding California’s sex offender registry.” But the devil is in the details, as the bill would actually protect adult sex offenders who prey upon and assault minors.

State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblywoman Susan Eggman (D-Stockton) reportedly co-introduced the legislation, dubbed Senate Bill 145, which would explicitly exempt sexual predators who are within 10 years of age of their minor victims from automatically having to register as sex offenders in the state’s official database.

As it currently stands in California, cases of illegal sexual intercourse between teenagers age 15 and over and others within 10 years of their age are treated on a case-by-case basis, and don’t necessarily require, in every case, that the older partners register as sex offenders. But the same isn’t true for other illegal sexual acts between adults and minors, including sexual relations between homosexuals and children as well as transgenders and children.

“This bill would authorize a person convicted of certain offenses involving minors to seek discretionary relief from the duty to register if the person is not more than 10 years older than the minor,” SB 145 states.

So, a 20-year-old homosexual can now get away with molesting a 10-year-old boy in California because prosecuting this adult offender would constitute “blatant discrimination against LGBT young people?”

Under the guise of trying to stop “blatant discrimination against LGBT young people,” the far-left politicians behind SB 145 are basically trying to legalize child rape by LGBTQ perverts, many of whom are obsessed with children and thus qualify as LGBTQPs – the P representing pedophilia.

Russia's Putin makes rare visit to Syria, meets Assad

Vladimir Putin met Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday, the Russian leader's second trip to Syria since Moscow intervened decisively on the Syrian president's behalf in the country's civil war.

The visit comes at a time of heightened regional tension - Assad's other main military ally, Iran, has said it will retaliate against the United States for the killing of an Iranian general in a drone strike.

Syrian state news agency SANA showed a photograph of Putin smiling as he shook Assad's hand and said they had listened to a military presentation by the head of Russian forces in Syria.

Putin and Assad discussed recent developments in the region and plans to "eliminate terrorism" in the Idlib region, one of the last pieces of Syrian territory held by anti-Assad insurgents, SANA reported.

Putin also delivered greetings to Russian forces in Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin could (IS) attempt to insert himself as an intermediary as tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalate, said William Cohen.

“I believe that President Putin is going to try and step in and be the peacemaker here,” said Cohen, a Republican who served as Defense secretary under Bill Clinton.

Putin is already set to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday to discuss the crisis between the U.S. and Iran. He spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday.

Australians travelling to Europe and the Middle East could be facing longer flight times and diverted flight routes following Iran's missile attacks onto US airbases in Iraq.

Key points:

Qantas will no longer fly through Iran or Iraq airspace, which may lead to the suspension of the newly-launched Perth-London route

Other airlines have also announced diversion of flights around Iran and Iraq

It comes after Iran launched missiles at US bases in Iraq following America's killing of a top Iranian general

Qantas has announced it will avoid airspace over Iran and Iraq until further notice, which may lead to the suspension of Qantas's direct Perth-London route, which was launched less than two years ago.

The airline said it was considering sending the flights leaving Australia through an Asian city to refuel, given the extra distance.

Direct flights from London to Perth would be able to continue thanks to prevailing wind conditions.

The 17-hour long-haul journey would be the only Qantas flight affected by the diversion.

Qantas said none of its planes were in the region when Tehran launched "tens" of surface-to-surface missiles at the Al-Assad and Erbil bases in response to America's killing of a top Iranian general.

Several other international carriers, including Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways, offer indirect stopover flights from Australia that travel through the area.

Many have announced they would be diverting or cancelling flights in the wake of the heightened tensions.

US Federal Aviation Administration bars carriers and pilots from airspace

Earlier on Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it was barring US pilots and carriers from flying in areas of Iraqi, Iranian and some Persian Gulf airspace.

Such restrictions are often precautionary in nature to prevent commercial aircraft from being confused for ones engaged in armed conflict.

Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) does not have the same jurisdiction in Australia as the FAA does in the US and does not issue bans on carriers from flying in certain areas.

CASA said it would be up to individual airlines to assess whether or not to continue flying through the regions.

Singapore Airlines Ltd said after the attacks that all of its flights would be diverted from Iranian airspace.

Qatar Airways said its flights to Iraq were operating normally.

Korean Air Lines Co Ltd and Thai Airways said they had been avoiding Iranian and Iraqi airspace before the attack on US troops.

Transport Canada said it was in close contact with the FAA and that Air Canada was altering its routes.

Vigil held for Timothy Dean as family prepares to file civil suit against Ed Buck

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) - One year since a fashion consultant was found dead in Democratic donor Ed Buck's apartment in West Hollywood, family and friends are renewing their call for justice.

Loved ones shared stories about Timothy Dean. He loved basketball and played in the 2018 Paris Gay Games, and helped those around him.

"He would give the shirt off his back," said friend Mark Chambers. "He literally gave suits to homeless people."

"Timothy was such a funny, great guy with great sense of style," said another friend, Michael Cautillo. "I just don't know him as the guy that would die that way, that he did, in this man's apartment."

An attorney announced the filing of a civil lawsuit against Buck on behalf of Dean's family at the vigil. The allegations include wrongful death, assault and violating the Drug Dealer Liability Act.

Dean was found dead of a methamphetamine overdose in the West Hollywood apartment of Buck.

Last year, the 65-year-old Buck was arrested. He's facing a number of charges, including allegedly providing meth to Dean and another man, Gemmel Moore, who also died after being injected with the drug in 2017.

Buck has pleaded not guilty.

"Even though today is very bittersweet, I am so happy Ed Buck is in jail," said political consultant Jasmyne Cannick.

The arrest came after years of protests. Some criticize District Attorney Jackie Lacey for not filing charges sooner, alleging Buck's ties to Democratic politicians helped protect him.

The D.A. denied that accusation in the past, saying her office investigated the case the same as everyone else.

By phone, Dean's sister Joy, asked for continued prayers.

"This is a heartfelt battle that we have to continue to make sure that my brother did not die in vain," she told the crowd at the vigil.

Buck's federal criminal trial is expected to begin in August.

Foreign spies working to “undermine our country” are able to secure their United States-born children birthright American citizenship under current policy, Fox News’s Tucker Carlson notes.

During a segment on birthright citizenship, Carlson mentioned Breitbart News’s most recent report that revealed how nearly 400,000 “anchor babies” — the term often used to describe the U.S.-born children of foreign workers and illegal aliens — were delivered in the country over the last year.

As Carlson said, the national anchor baby policy does not discriminate and thus foreign spies who deliver children in the U.S. are able to secure them birthright citizenship:

Under current American law, every person born on our soil automatically becomes a citizen. It doesn’t matter if their parents are tourists to this country, or are here illegally, or are even spies seeking to undermine our country. Congress can change that law, obviously, but they don’t actually care so they won’t. What effect does it have? [Emphasis added]

Well, according to the Center for Immigration Studies, last year about 372,000 anchor babies were born in the United States. Their parents had no legal right to be here. Those children allow their parents though to qualify for a whole suite of welfare benefits and, of course, their parents will never be forced to leave the country. One person was killed and three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries following a shooting Wednesday morning on Ottawa's Gilmour Street.

A Colorado woman was arrested in Montana after allegedly plotting a raid with fellow believers of the QAnon conspiracy theory to kidnap her daughter, who does not live with her.

The Denver Post reported that 50-year-old Cynthia Abcug was arrested and accused of conspiring with at least one other believer of the QAnon conspiracy theory to conduct an armed raid of a house in which her daughter, of whom Abcug does not have custody, currently lives.

Abcug's daughter told police ahead of the planned raid, however, reportedly out of concern that Abcug or others would hurt people or be injured themselves during the attack.

Carlos Ghosn, speaking publicly for the first since his dramatic escape from Japanese justice, told reporters in Beirut he had been treated “brutally” by Tokyo prosecutors he accused of helping Nissan to oust him as chairman. Wearing a blue suit and red tie and speaking defiantly, the former Nissan chief told a packed news conference on Wednesday that he was not confident he would face a fair trial had he remained in Japan. The one-time titan of the auto industry fled Japan last month where he was awaiting trial on charges of under-reporting earnings, breach of trust and misappropriation of company funds, all of which he denies. Ghosn said he had fled to Lebanon to clear his name. “You are going to die in Japan or you are going to have to get out,” Ghosn said, describing his feelings. “I felt like the hostage of a country I served for 17 years,” he told reporters crowded into Lebanon’s seaside Beirut press syndicate. Others waited outside in heavy rain, including some Japanese media who had been excluded from the briefing.

“The charges against me are baseless,” Ghosn added, repeating his allegation that Nissan and Japanese authorities colluded to oust him following a downturn in Nissan’s fortunes and in revenge for French government interference in the carmaker’s alliance with Renault. “Why have they extended the investigation timeline, why have they rearrested me? Why were they so intent on preventing me from talking and setting out my facts?” Ghosn said of the Japanese authorities. “Why have they spent 14 months trying to break my spirit, barring any contact with my wife?”

Tokyo prosecutors on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for Ghosn’s wife, Carole, for alleged perjury. Japan’s Ministry of Justice has said it will try to find a way to bring Ghosn back from Lebanon, even though it has no extradition treaty with Japan.

Turkish and Japanese authorities are investigating how Ghosn was smuggled out to Beirut. Interpol has issued a “red notice” seeking his arrest. Ghosn’s news conference marks the latest twist in a 14-month saga that has shaken the global car industry, jeopardised the Renault-Nissan alliance of which Ghosn was the architect and increased scrutiny of Japan’s judicial system.

Nissan said an internal investigation found that Ghosn had engaged in personal use of company money and had under-reported his income in violation of Japanese law.

Saudi Aramco shares have dropped 11.5% from their IPO peak, and still, the shares are overvalued.

Shares closed on Wednesday at their lowest level (34.15 riyals (($9.10)) since trading began on Dec. 11, after Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles at multiple US military bases in Iraq. The killing of Iran's top general Qassem Soleimani last Friday, and the retaliation strikes by Iran on Wednesday, have caused a massive divergence between sinking Aramco shares and surging oil prices. WTI rose 5% to 65.50 on the news of Iranian missile strikes in Iraq. Brent briefly spiked to the 71 handle, and both oil contracts have faded since the attacks. Aramco shares didn't benefit from spiking oil prices because its oil facilities are in striking range of Iran.

75 years ago, US soldiers fought 'the other Battle of the Bulge'

Troy, New York — In the earliest days of 1945, the infantrymen of the 42nd Infantry Division, now a part of the New York Army National Guard, spent their first days in desperate combat against German tanks and paratroopers during Hitler's final offensive in Western Europe.

Operation Nordwind, sometimes called "the other Battle of the Bulge" kicked off on New Year's Eve 1944 in the Alsace region of France. The American and French armies fought desperately to halt the attack and hold onto the city of Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace.

Three regiments of 42nd Infantry Division soldiers, who had been hurried to France without the rest of their divisional support units, had arrived in Strasbourg, France just before Christmas 1944. They expected to spend time in a quiet sector to learn the ropes of combat.

They could not have been more wrong.

The 42nd Infantry Division had been made up of National Guard troops during World War I and nicknamed "the Rainbow Division" because it contained elements from 26 states.

SEC Proposes Improvements to Governance of Market Data Plans

Washington D.C., Jan. 8, 2020 —

The Securities and Exchange Commission is seeking public comment on a proposed order to modernize the governance of National Market System (NMS) plans that produce public consolidated equity market data and disseminate trade and quote data from trading venues.

“Today’s action is an important step in our ongoing efforts to modernize our national market system,” said SEC Chairman Jay Clayton. “The Commission has received extensive public input on issues relating to equity market structure and access to market data, as well as suggestions for how that structure should be updated to ensure that our markets continue to best serve the interests of investors. Today’s proposed order is designed to address issues regarding the dissemination of market data that affect the efficiency and fairness of our markets. In particular, we welcome public input on the specific proposed governance provisions.”

The proposed order would direct the equities exchanges and FINRA to file with the Commission a new NMS plan designed to increase transparency and address conflicts of interest and other issues presented by the current governance structure of the existing NMS plans. The proposed order describes the specific proposed governance provisions that the Commission preliminarily believes would address these issues. If the Commission decides to issue an order after considering public input, the NMS plan participants would be required to submit a new plan, which would then be published for public comment before the Commission takes any definitive action on a new plan. Until the Commission takes such action, the current plans will continue to govern.

Millions of Main Street investors, whether individually or collectively through mutual funds or pension funds, have invested their savings in equity securities. The consolidated market data produced pursuant to the current NMS plans is a critical component of the national market system through which these investments are priced and traded. Market developments have given rise to concerns about whether—as currently structured—the existing plans for equity market data continue to fulfill appropriately their statutory purpose. The proposed order states that the current governance structure of these plans perpetuates disincentives to enhance consolidated equity market data feeds, which are often slower and contain less information than the proprietary market data feeds offered by the participants that control much of the voting power for the NMS plans.

The President called out Barack Obama for the sham nuke deal that gave Iran $150 billion.

President Trump said the missiles that were fired last night were funded by the Obama Administration.

The garbage nuke deal wasn’t worth the paper is was written on (Obama never required Iranian leaders to sign the nuke deal).

The Obama Admin admitted that the Iran nuke deal wasn’t “an executive agreement” or even a “signed document.”

The Iranians laughed at Obama and fired off ballistic missiles many times breaching the so-called nuke deal.

Iran shipped 30 tons of yellow cake (uranium ore) to a facility in Isfahan last January, which if enriched could provide material to make atomic bombs.

Trump de-escalated and announced Wednesday that the US will impose more sanctions on Iran.

Putin & Erdogan Set Saturday Deadline For Urgent Libya Ceasefire As War Escalates

With Putin in Turkey on Wednesday ceremonially launching the much-anticipated offshore pipeline TurkStream, which will supply Russian gas to Turkey and southern Europe, it's actually events in Libya and Syria that are at the top of contentious discussions.

But there appears to have been a breakthrough which may or may not have any real impact on the Libyan war, just days after Turkey controversially ordered troops to Tripoli to the condemnation of pro-Haftar forces and its backers Egypt, the UAE, and Russia.

The Turkish and Russian presidents have called for a ceasefire in Libya that will start from Saturday (Jan.12) midnight, according to Turkish FM Cavusoglu, cited in Turkish state media.

The two sides issued a statement Wednesday calling for Gen. Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA) and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) to immediately come to the negotiating table.

As Middle East Eye reports:

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, speaking alongside his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, said he hopes the ceasefire will embolden the Berlin process seeking to resolve the conflict.

“In a joint statement Presidents Erdogan and Putin urge parties to stop violence” Cavusoglu said. Lavrov added that they expect neighbouring countries to actively join the Berlin process to help end the conflict.

It's only the GNA which is recognized by the United Nations, and at least still on paper the United States as well — though Trump over the past half-year has issued public praise for Haftar, a dual US citizen considered close to the CIA.

The crisis has escalated over the past months as Haftar has declared his forces are in the "final offensive" to wrest control of the capital Tripoli from the GNA. On Saturday an LNA airstrike slammed into a military academy in Tripoli, killing at least 30 and injuring nearly 40.

Previewing the urgency of the Libya matter as Putin was set to meet with Erdogan, Turkish media noted:

Perhaps topping the agenda is Libya – Turkey has deployed troops to support the U.N.-approved government in Tripoli against an assault by the Moscow-backed Libyan National Army, led by General Khalifa Haftar.

Russia has told Ankara that Turkish soldiers should not oppose Haftar’s militias, Deutsche Welle said citing one unidentified official. Erdoğan will assure Putin at Wednesday’s meeting that Turkish soldiers will not enter combat, other officials say.

But we doubt such "assurances" proved enough, given Turkey is already supplying the GNA with advanced military hardware such as drones to push back Haftar's own small air force, which includes MiG fighters.

The Turkish and Russian joint statement further called on the US and Iran to "de-escalate tensions and prioritize diplomacy" at a moment the region is on the brink of war after the overnight Iranian ballistic missile retaliation on US bases in Iraq.

Special Projects Branch hits 10-year milestone.

OMAHA, NE, UNITED STATES; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District .

In many organizations, there are some tasks and projects that just don’t seem to fit into an easily defined category. This was also the case for the Corps of Engineers Omaha District in 2009. The District had projects that needed to be completed, but didn’t quite fit the mold of the programs they were assigned to.

The solution to that issue to the stand up the Special Projects Branch. It was a new concept when the first eight-person team was assembled to take on these outliers, which totaled more than $140 million that first year. Since then, the branch has grown to 52 people and nearly $600 million worth of work annually.

The Special Projects Branch assembles project delivery teams to support the nation through homeland security/defense, disaster and infrastructure work within the Omaha District's Area of Responsibility and beyond.

The Special Projects Branch consists of three sections to manage Interagency & International Support/ Rapid Response (IIS); Facilities, Sustainment, Restoration, and Modernization (FSRM); and Fuels.

Customers include Department of Defense and other federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, Department of the Interior, Defense Logistics Agency, Department of Veterans Affairs and others.

Special Projects teams support the Omaha District mission using internal and external resources, including discretionary and/or flexible cost reimbursement contract mechanisms to provide national and international, time-sensitive and non-time-sensitive project support.

Greg Herring, Special Projects Branch Chief, has been with the branch since it was created. He said Special Projects was initially put together to focus on some of the “smaller” projects the District was handling.

“We had a couple of organizations around the Corps of Engineers that were bringing in reimbursable workloads, what we call projects from non-captive customers. They don’t have to come to the Corps of Engineers to get their work done, they just need an engineering service center to get things done. We were bringing in workload from a lot of different areas in the district,” he said. “The Special Projects Branch was created to pick up that type of workload that wasn’t part of other branches’ key business lines; it put the work from all of these agencies in one spot. There was this workload that didn’t have a PM [Project Management] home. They were coming into these other branches and they were managing it.”

Ted Streckfuss, Deputy District Engineer for the Omaha District, said the Special Projects team has taken on the challenge of consolidating those “smaller” projects, but also growing it into a successful branch of the District.

"It has been nearly a decade since Omaha District embarked on a journey dedicated to the vision of workload management and enhanced customer satisfaction. At that time, many within the District had been scratching their head and discussing the challenges related to end-of-year execution, and the availability of staff to accomplish the tasks we had committed to,” he said. “After extensive review, it was determined that the ‘work for others’ aspect of the District's execution need was a significant component of our overarching mission to support the nation.

“We felt that establishing a branch-level organization charged with the responsibility to seamlessly execute our mission to the high standard that Omaha District is known for would be the lynch pin leading us to a more robust, efficient and effective team,” Streckfuss added.

Streckfuss said that team is now meeting and exceeding its original goals.

Update (1130ET): After beginning his address 25 minutes late, President Trump, flanked by top military officials, began with a stark message:

"As long as I'm president of the United States, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon."

Trump added that the world community has tolerated Iran’s "destabilizing behavior" since 1979 (the year of the Iranian hostage crisis) and argued that through the killing of Soleimani, he is changing things:

“Soleimani’s hands were drenched in both American and Iranian blood. He should have been terminated long ago. By removing Soleimani, we have sent a powerful message to terrorists.”

Trump made it clear that US doesn't need anything from Iran:

“We are independent and we do not need Middle East oil,”

During Iran’s Tuesday night missile strike on a U.S. base in Iraq, far-left MSNBC openly admitted it was spreading propaganda for the Iranian government.

TRANSCRIPT: We’re just getting reports now that a second wave of rocket attacks has been launched from Iran. The IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] was saying that Ayatollah Khamenei, the supreme leader of this country, was in the control center coordinating these attacks. This bit I’m not sure about, but Iran state media is claiming that 30 U.S soldiers have been killed in this attack. This is not confirmed. This is just coming from Iranian media. But we have just stepped over the precipice, Chris.

The fake reporter here is Ali Arouzi, NBC’s Tehran Bureau Chief, who was on with Chris Matthews.

Let’s break down just how breathtakingly irresponsible this is.

1) Arouzi used information from the IRGC to build up Khamenei, to make it sound as though this barbarian was in control, was a brave warrior coordinating the attacks. Where’s the context about how no one should believe anything from the monstrous IRGC?

2) Knowing the information was coming from a propaganda outlet like Iran state TV, which the Iranian government controls, NBC spread a state-sponsored rumor that 30 American soldiers had been killed in the airstrikes.

3) Arouzi admits he’s “not sure” about the 30 dead soldiers, but he goes ahead and reports it anyway. How thrilled was Iran to hear that? And what kind of “reporter” reports something he’s not sure of?

4) This is probably the worst one… You have a so-called journalist announcing we have crossed a “precipice,” which means there’s no coming back, which means war, which even at the time was doubtful.

All of this was a lie. All of this was nothing less than an NBC News bureau chief jumping on American television to play Baghdad Bob on behalf of a terrorist nation.

To begin with, it not only doesn’t look like 30 Americans were killed; it looks like no Americans were killed and that Iran deliberately avoided American causalities by aiming its missiles elsewhere. In other words, this was a face-saving move by Iran, a de-escalation, a sign that Iran is admitting it does not want to go to war with the U.S. but did need to fire off a few symbolic missiles for sake of the political situation inside Iran.

This is good news.

No, it’s great news because, if true, it means we won. It means that President Trump’s decision to target Iran’s terrorist mastermind Gen. Soleimani worked. It scared Iran to death, to where they’re willing to fire off a few rockets and run off the field of battle.

Meanwhile, crippling sanctions against Iran remain in place.

So much for crossing the “precipice.”

And what kind of “bureau chief,” what kind of purported news network like NBC, allows its bureau chief to decide what is and is not a precipice, especially during the very fog of war?

You see, the sad truth is this…

The media, including NBC News, hate Trump so much, they want a war to bog his reelection down, they want piles of dead American soldiers to bring down his approval ratings.

There is simply no other explanation for this kind of reckless, dangerous, and wildly irresponsible reporting.

Never forget that what we are talking about here are media who went into two predominantly black working class communities — Ferguson and Baltimore — and deliberately spread lies in the hopes of launching race riots and did so knowing these riots would only hurt the people who are already struggling in those neighborhoods.

The media are evil. When you remember that, everything they do makes perfect sense.

On Tuesday night, PBS broadcast the 2019 Mark Twain Prize ceremony honoring comedian Dave Chappelle. During the program, Chappelle explained how "standup comedy is an incredibly American genre." He then explained how the First Amendment helped breed comedy, and how the Second Amendment guarantees it.

In a shot across the bow at politically correct cancel culture, Chappelle used his acceptance speech to highlight how every American viewpoint is represented in a comedy club somewhere — even the most repugnant. And he explained how that's OK.

Chappelle said, "We [standup comics] watch you guys fight. But when we're together we talk it out. I know comics that are very racist and I watch 'em on stage and everyone's laughing. And I'm like mmm that motherf***er means that st."

Documents Show Senior Kerry Aide Used Private Email to Send Steele Reports to State Department Colleagues

WASHINGTON—Eleven pages of State Department documents released on Jan. 7 in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch show that Jonathan Winer, an assistant to then-Secretary of State John Kerry, used his private email address to convey information he received from former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele to top U.S. diplomatic officials.

“I will send them to her [his assistant, Nina Miller] from my non-State email account, not copying myself,” Winer said in response to a December 2014 email from Paul Jones, principal deputy assistant secretary for European Affairs.

Jones wanted Winer to use the State Department’s secure email system, known informally as the “high side,” to transmit reports from Steele’s firm, Orbis Business Intelligence.

“Given our ongoing concerns about security of open net, [then-Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland] and I wonder if it would be possible for you to flip Orbis reports to this system before sending them to us. Understand that’s yet another step in the process for you. We just want to be sure we don’t inadvertently undermine a very good source of info or worse.”

Winer, who was then-special coordinator for Libya under Kerry, continued in his response, telling Jones “she will then send them to us. You know who they are coming from, so even high side from here I will just refer to them as ‘O Reports,’ and strip out any other identifying information as to sourcing.”

Winer’s use of his private email to conduct official U.S. government business may have violated federal regulations and State Department guidelines.

Pres. Trump Hits Iran With Sanctions Says ‘Iran Will Never Be Able To Have A Nuclear Weapon’

In a national address Wednesday from the White House Grand Foyer, President Donald Trump shared certainty that under his tenure, “Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.” He made that statement after Iran launched over a dozen ballistic missiles aimed at U.S. forces and coalition Iraqi forces at two Iraqi military bases, Al-Assad and Irbil, late Tuesday.

There were no casualties and military bases sustained “minimal damage,” said Trump. In response, the President announced new sanctions against the Iranian regime and asked that North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies comply with a pressure campaign in the region.

“For far too long, all the way back to 1979 to be exact, nations have tolerated Iran’s destructive and destabilizing behavior in the Middle East and beyond. Those days are over,” Trump said.

He continued, “Iran has been the largest state sponsor of terrorism and their pursuit of nuclear weapons threatens the civilized world. We will never let that happen.”

Trump Meets With Greek Prime Minister to Discuss Strategic Cooperation and Security

President Donald Trump welcomed Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the White House on Tuesday, applauding Greece for its economic recovery, while Mitsotakis sought further expansion of economic and strategic ties with the United States.

During a press conference held before the bilateral meeting with Trump, Mitsotakis stressed the importance of strengthening the strategic relationship between the two countries, as Greece is “a reliable and predictable ally [of the United States] in a complicated part of the world.”

He also emphasized the recovery of the Greek economy and the economic growth that the country has achieved. The growth can be attributed to Greek government policies that have proven successful in the United States, such as lowering taxes and deregulation, said Mitsotakis. He also invited American companies to invest more in Greece and contribute to the economic growth of the country.

According to ING senior economist Paolo Pizzoli, “Greek GDP expanded by 0.6 percent quarter on quarter in seasonally adjusted terms and by 2.3 percent year on year in non-seasonally adjusted terms, but the Greek economy is still in search of a sounder growth pattern.”

Greece suffered a debt crisis between 2008 and 2018 but received bailout loans from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. In 2018 the rescue program ended but until all loans are repaid the country’s budget is under strict austerity measures and is overseen by its creditors.

Cooperation in Defense

Mitsotakis expressed Greece’s interest in participating in the F-35 program. The F-35 is a multinational program led and mainly funded by the United States to develop and produce a family of cutting edge combat aircraft.

Greece recently signed a contract with Lockheed Martin for a major upgrade of its F-16 fighter aircraft and, according to Mitsotakis, after the completion of the upgrade in 2024 Greece would like to participate in the F-35 program. As a NATO member Greece is currently spending more than 2 percent of its GDP on defense—a standard adopted by all NATO members in 2014.

Trump will not escalate the crisis with Iran but talked tough, while inviting NATO to take over at least part of U.S. role in the region.

Following Iran’s retaliatory missile strikes on two US military bases on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump imposed unspecified new sanctions on Iran but told Tehran that the US is “ready to embrace peace for all who seek it.”

In a televised address from the White House on Wednesday, Trump did not say the U.S. would further escalate military action against Iran following Iran’s ballistic missile strikes, which the Iranian foreign minister said concluded Iran’s response to the U.S. killing of Gen. Qassim Suleimani, the leader of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Trump reported that there were no deaths or injuries and minimal property damage from the Iranian missile strikes over night.

Feinstein Fed Up with Pelosi Delay Tactics – Demands She Send Articles of Impeachment to Senate as Speaker Clings to Articles, Refuses to Let Go

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) is demanding Nancy Pelosi deliver the articles of impeachment to the Senate, but the Speaker is digging in her heels and won’t let go.

Fox News reported that Pelosi told colleagues in a letter that she will not give the articles of impeachment to the Senate unless McConnell ‘immediately publishes’ his resolution and accused the Senate Majority Leader of making “misleading claims” about the Clinton impeachment to justify his strategy.

“Sadly, Leader McConnell has made clear that his loyalty is to the President and not the Constitution,” Pelosi wrote. “Leader McConnell has insisted that the approach under consideration is identical to those of the Clinton trial and that ‘fair is fair.’ This is simply not true.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday that the Senate has the votes to move forward with phase one of the impeachment trial.

“Fifty-one senators determine what we do and there will be, I’m sure, intense discussion, once we get past phase one, about the whole witness issue,” McConnell said, while also insisting that the Senate first receive the articles from the House.

It’s getting so bad that even Feinstein is demanding Pelosi stop delaying and just hand over the articles of impeachment.

“If we’re going to do it, she should send them over,” Feinstein said. “I don’t see what good delay does.”

Fed’s Balance Sheet Explodes by $413 Billion in 119 Days-and it keeps going

On September 4, 2019, the assets on the balance sheet of the Federal Reserve stood at $3.761 trillion. As of January 1, that figure is $4,173,626,000,000. That’s an increase of $413 billion in just the past 119 days and the Fed does not seem inclined to turn off its money spigot to Wall Street anytime soon. At the rate the Fed is now going, its balance sheet is likely to eclipse the $4.5 trillion all-time high it reached in 2015 as a result of the unprecedented sums it funneled to Wall Street following the epic financial crash in 2008 and its three rounds of quantitative easing (QE) to keep interest rates low to appease Wall Street’s trading houses and their trillions of dollars in interest-rate derivative bets. When Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, testified to the Senate Banking Committee on June 13, 2012 about billions of dollars in derivative losses at his federally-insured bank, he had this to say about the major dangers facing his bank – the largest bank in the U.S. “There are two major risks that J.P. Morgan faced: dramatically rising interest rates and a global type of credit crisis. Those are the two biggest risks we face,” Dimon stated.

The Fed, through its open money spigot and trading arm – the New York Fed – has been a Fairy Godmother to Jamie Dimon. It has kept short-term interest rates at historic lows since 2008 and postponed the inevitable global financial crisis long enough to allow Jamie Dimon and his pals on Wall Street to become billionaires. The flipside of Jamie Dimon’s wish list has been to impoverish millions of retirees who have seen their interest income on Treasury notes and Certificates of Deposits cut in half for more than a decade and to fuel an unprecedented corporate debt bubble in the U.S. as a result of that cheap money.

Now, instead of the Fed winding down its latest money spigot that it opened on behalf of Wall Street’s trading houses on September 17, it appears to be gaining momentum. Yesterday, the $35 billion that the New York Fed provided to Wall Street in 14-day term loans was oversubscribed by $6.12 billion. On top of that, the New York Fed also pumped out $63.919 billion in overnight loans for a total of $98.919 billion – in just one day. The New York Fed’s latest money spigot has been in operation every business day since September 17 when overnight rates on repo loans spiked from an average of 2 percent to 10 percent. The New York Fed stepped in as lender-of-last-resort to bring the rate back down, despite the fact that this is clearly where the free market wanted to price these loans. Yesterday’s New York Fed loans were pumped out at the preposterously low rate of 1.55 percent interest.

Repo loans are typically made between Wall Street banks, hedge funds and money market funds. The New York Fed is making its repo loans available exclusively to its 24 primary dealers, which are, in fact, the primary trading houses on Wall Street. Many of these firms could not borrow in the open market at rates anywhere near 1.55 percent. So the New York Fed is essentially providing another bailout to Wall Street and calling it part of its “open market operations.” The New York Fed is just one of the 12 regional banks of the Federal Reserve system. But because it supervises the bank holding companies of two of the largest federally-insured banks in the country (JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup) and four of the largest Wall Street trading houses in the country (JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs) it has, over time, morphed into both a captured regulator and a captured bank vault.

What is remarkable about these super cheap loans to Wall Street at this time is that the Fed is simultaneously insisting that the Wall Street banks are in fine shape.

An Ajax family of three are among several GTA residents killed in a plane crash in Iran that took the lives of at least 63 Canadians on Wednesday.

Evin Arsalani, who worked as a business analyst at CIBC, along with her husband, Hiva Molani, and their one-year-old daughter, Kurdia Molani, had travelled to Iran for a wedding back on December 8th.

The family was scheduled to return home Wednesday after celebrating Arsalani’s birthday on January 2nd.

Parisa Eghbalian, who worked as a dentist at Aurora E&E Dentistry, was also killed in the crash along with her nine-year-old daughter, Reera Esmaeilion.

“I’m never going to forget her laugh, her smile, and the little girl — she was so adorable,” Manijeh Ghotbi, an employee at the clinic and friend of Eghbalian’s, said through tears.

“Everybody is devastated.”

CityNews has learned that three Toronto residents, Afif Tarbhai, Alina Tarbhai, and Asghar Dhirani were on the flight.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) says Alina Tarbhai worked at the OSSTF/FEESO provincial office.

“Alina was a valued employee, and part of a tightly-knit team at Provincial Office,” OSSTF president Harvey Bischof said in a statement. She was respected and well-liked by all. Her passing represents a profound loss for all of us who worked with her.”

Universities confirm student deaths

Two students enrolled at the University of Waterloo have been confirmed as victims on the ill-fated flight.

Marzieh (Mari) Foroutan and Mansour Esfahani were both PhD students, according to university officials.

The University of Ottawa confirmed that three of its students are also among the victims. Their names were not immediately released.

“We are still trying to assess if any other students, faculty or staff members were also on the plane,” the school said in a statement.

Western University says four of its students died in the crash.

Boeing last week received a US patent for a system that, once activated, removes all control from pilots to automatically return a commercial airliner to a predetermined landing location.

The “uninterruptible” autopilot would be activated – either by pilots, by onboard sensors, or even remotely via radio or satellite links by government agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency, if terrorists attempt to gain control of a flight deck.

Boeing says: "We are constantly studying ways we can enhance the safety, security and effiecency of the world's airline fleet."

“There is a need in the industry for a technique that conclusively prevents unauthorised persons for gaining access to the controls of the vehicle and therefore threatening the safety of the passengers onboard the vehicle, and/or other people in the path of travel of the vehicle, thereby decreasing the amount of destruction individuals onboard the vehicle would be capable of causing,” the patent authors write. “In particular, there is a need for a technique that ensures the continuation of the desired path of travel of a vehicle by removing any type of human decision process that may be influenced by the circumstances of the situation, including threats or further violence onboard the vehicle.”

According to the patent, existing preventative measures are less than fullproof – pilots can decide to open the lockable, bullet-proof cockpit doors and federal air marshals can be overpowered and de-armed. Boeing’s alternative has an onboard processor that once activated, disallows pilot inputs and prevents anyone on board from interrupting an emergency landing plan that can be predefined or radioed to the aircraft by airline or government controllers and carried out by the aircraft’s guidance and control system. To make it fully independent, the system has its own power supply, independent of the aircraft’s circuit breakers. The aircraft remains in automatic mode until after landing, when mechanics or government security operatives are called in to disengage the system.

Boeing envisions several methods of activating the system. Options include manual switches for pilots to hit, or possibly force sensors on the cockpit door that would trip the anti-terror mode if a minimum force threshold were crossed, for instance if someone were trying to break down the door. Another option is a remote link whereby airline or government workers in ground facilities would monitor and aircraft and command the automatic control mode “once it is determined that the security of the air vehicle is in jeopardy.” Radio links could also be used to inform ground facilities and nearby aircraft that an aircraft has been placed in the automatic flight mode.

It’s unclear if the Boeing work is related to last week’s issuance of a $1.9 million US Federal Aviation Administration contract to Raytheon for an Advanced Route Evaluation System (ARES). According to Raytheon, ARES will perform risk analysis on aviation routes to help planners determine the best routes for aircraft to use during emergencies.”

Aside from the safety and security aspects of having such a system, Boeing sees it as a preventative measure: “Once the automatic control system provided by the present invention is initiated, no one on board the air vehicle is capable controlling the flight to the air vehicle, such that it would be useless for anyone to threaten violence in order to gain control the air vehicle.”

State lawmakers push to protect girls from competing against biological males in sports

Legislation is for ‘every dad who’s got a daughter’

The Democrat-controlled U.S. House wants to force schools to let biologically male students compete in girls’ sports.

State lawmakers in Tennessee and Washington have their own ideas, however, taking preemptive action to keep school sports separated by biological sex.

They introduced bills last month that would require schools to identify students by their original birth certificates for the purpose of deciding eligibility in single-sex sports. Such requirements contradict the federal Equality Act, which would set sports eligibility on the subjective gender identity of student athletes.

The odds for federal legislation are slim. The Equality Act is awaiting action in the Republican-controlled Senate more than seven months after the House passed it, and it’s unlikely President Trump would sign it.

But the Tennessee bill, introduced by Republican Rep. Bruce Griffey Dec. 9, faces its own hurdles as the Legislature prepares to reconvene next week. Transgender sports activist Chris Mosier tweeted about it Saturday, putting a national spotlight on an issue that galvanizes progressives.

Meanwhile, the Washington bill by Republican Rep. Brad Klippert has not technically been introduced. The lawmaker “prefiled” the bill Dec. 4. The legislative session also starts next week.

Lawmakers told The College Fix they were spurred to act by the politicization of sports, biological differences between men and women and personal reasons.

Griffey said he was also concerned about the lack of definition for “transgender.” Students may refer to themselves as transgender regardless of what stage of “transition” they are in, if they have taken any step toward transitioning at all, he said.

Tennessee House Bill 1572 states that all elementary and secondary schools “shall require, for an official or unofficial school-sanctioned athletic or sporting event, that each athlete participating in the athletic or sporting event participates with and competes against other athletes based on the athlete’s biological sex as indicated on the athlete’s original birth certificate issued at the time of birth.”

Schools would not be allowed to accept “revised or amended” birth certificates “with respect to the sex of an athlete.” They would become ineligible to receive public funds from state and local governments if they violate the proposed law.

Additionally, district attorneys general would be required to bring civil actions against state and local officials who either violate or intend to violate the proposed law. They would be treated as criminal defendants, with civil penalties up to $10,000. If found guilty, they would also be removed from public office and hit with five-year bans on serving in public office or as a school administrator, including principal.

Sponsor Griffey explicitly cited the U.S. House passage of the Equality Act as a spur “for states to take a stand,” telling the Tennessee Star the federal legislation would create “a civil right for male athletes to self-identify as females in sports competitions.”

Griffey told The Fix he was also motivated to intervene by reports of transgender domination of girls’ sports across the country, as well as his daughter’s own participation in youth sports. He proposed HB 1572 with “every dad who’s got a daughter” in mind, to “ensure integrity and fairness” in girls’ sports.

Biologically, males have “bigger hearts [and] stronger lungs” among other things, giving them “an unfair advantage” over females in many athletic activities, Griffey said. He added that fairness goes both ways: Females have many attributes that give them certain advantages over males in other areas.

Klippert’s House Bill 2201 states that Washington schools and nonprofit entities “must prohibit male students from competing with and against female students in athletic activities with separate classifications for male and female students.” It defines males as those “whose sex assigned at birth was male.”

Klippert told The Fix his prefiled bill was preemptive and in response to national events. He’s personally interested because “girls have a right to participate in individualized sports and shouldn’t be forced to compete against boys.”

The Ottawa Citizen newspaper puts some pretty, pretty pink lipstick on the correlation between doctors committing "assisted suicide" and the sudden plethora of spare human body parts for those needing organ transplants.

The headline tells it all: "Medically assisted deaths prove a growing boon to organ donation in Ontario."

The story begins with how virtuous Canadians are who "off" themselves with a doctor's help:

"Ontarians who opt for medically assisted deaths (MAiD) are increasingly saving or improving other people’s lives by also including organ and tissue donation as part of their final wishes.

In the first 11 months of 2019, MAiD patients in the province accounted for 18 organ and 95 tissue donors, a 14 per cent increase over 2018 and a 109 per cent increase over 2017. (Figures for December 2019 are not yet available.)" [Emphasis added]

Canada decriminalized doctors killing terminal patients in 2016. The spokesman for the organization in charge of organ donation, Trillium's Ronnie Gavsie, told the Citizen they're not forcing anyone into donating organs:

"...The decision to pursue MAiD is totally separate from the decision to donate organs, but we do want patients to have their last will carried out.”

Indeed, terminal patients are actually changing their lives around to die right:

California Gov. Newsom seeks over $1 billion in state funds to fight homelessness

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) previewed $1 billion in budget proposals Wednesday to lower homelessness levels across the state.

The proposal includes $750 million in a new California Access to Housing and Services Fund to tackle multiple goals for the state's homeless population. The fund will “pay rent for individuals facing homelessness,” in addition to supporting “regions to bring on more dwelling units” and “help stabilize board and care facilities/homes,” according to a Wednesday statement.

The fund is designed to fill gaps in housing while more homeless infrastructure is built, according to the statement. Newsom also called on “philanthropy and the private sector to step up as well” to pay for the fund.

The fund will be established by an executive order Wednesday requiring state agencies to take “urgent and immediate” action by Jan. 31 to make state facilities and properties available to increase housing options for those experiencing homelessness, according to the Wednesday statement. The order also establishes a state crisis response team for communities to address homeless populations.

It also will immediately make 100 camp trailers available as temporary housing, alongside mobile health and social service clinics “across the state to communities in need.”

“The State of California is treating homelessness as a real emergency – because it is one. Californians are demanding that all levels of government – federal, state and local – do more to get people off the streets and into services – whether that’s housing, mental health services, substance abuse treatment or all of the above,” Newsom said in the Wednesday statement.

“That’s why we’re using every tool in the toolbox – from proposing a massive new infusion of state dollars in the budget that goes directly to homeless individuals’ emergency housing and treatment programs, to building short-term emergency housing on vacant state-owned land,” he continued.

The budget proposal, to be officially unveiled later this week, also includes $695 million, growing to $1.4 billion by 2022 to fund Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid health program, and “address many challenges of chronically unsheltered populations – providing funding for tenancy support services, housing navigation services, recuperative care, and could include targeted rental assistance.”

Israel will shoot down rockets with space-age ‘LASER SWORD’

Israel announced an upcoming addition to its aerial defense systems: a laser weapon that the country’s defense minister says will be able to intercept rockets, guided missiles, and other projectiles lobbed at the Jewish state.

Israel has been developing laser weapons since the mid-1990s, yet the most promising such weapon – the US-Israeli-developed Nautilus Tactical High Energy Laser – was shelved in 2006 in favor of continued reliance on the Iron Dome missile batteries.

However, research has continued in the meantime, and Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett announced on Wednesday that a functioning laser defense system will be operational within a year and a half.

The system will use multiple laser beams focused together, and will work in adverse weather conditions, the Jerusalem Post reported. Bennett said that the system “makes the security apparatus more lethal, more powerful, and more advanced.”

“We will add a laser sword when dealing with threats from the north or the south,” the minister said, adding “the enemies of Israel better not test our resolve or our abilities.”

The Israeli government’s goal is to use the system against rockets, such as the Qassam, commonly fired into Israel from Gaza. Defense Ministry research head Yaniv Rotem told the Jerusalem Post that the laser has been tested on “mortar shells, drones and anti-tank missiles” in recent years.

Crucially, laser weapons are far cheaper to operate than missile batteries. Every successful Iron Dome interception costs thousands of dollars, whereas a laser weapon costs only what electricity is used. It is also expected to be effective against low-flying drones and incendiary kites and balloons, like those used by Palestinain rioters to set fire to Israeli farmlands near the Gaza border.

‘Star Wars’ capabilities are unlikely to deter Israel’s enemies from launching attacks on the Jewish state, however. Despite the Iron Dome limiting the effectiveness of rocket strikes, and the Israeli military’s often disproportionate response to Palestinian violence, anger among those living in the occupied territories still regularly results in clashes and death.

The country’s long-standing enmity with Iran has also seen its cities threatened with missile fire. As the US and Tehran stood on the brink of war this week, Iranian leadership threatened on Wednesday to launch missiles at Haifa, should the US respond with force to an Iranian attack on American bases in Iraq.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded in kind, threatening to deal Iran a “most crushing blow,” were the Islamic Republic to target Israel.
