Facebook executive in India files police complaint after report on content practices

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A top Facebook executive in India has filed a police complaint in New Delhi saying she is receiving death threats following a media report that said she and the U.S. social network company allegedly favoured Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party.

Ankhi Das, Facebook's top public-policy executive in India, in her complaint to Delhi police said some individuals online had "intentionally vilified" her due to their political affiliations and were engaging in abuse, Indian media reported.

Das has said the threats followed a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report last week that said she opposed applying Facebook's hate-speech rules to a member of Modi's party and some other Hindu nationalist individuals and groups "flagged internally for promoting or participating in violence".

"I am extremely disturbed by the relentless harassment meted out to me," Das said in her complaint, according to India's Hindu newspaper.

Google giving far-right users' data to law enforcement, documents reveal

A little-known investigative unit inside search giant Google regularly forwarded detailed personal information on the company’s users to members of a counter-terrorist fusion center in California’s Bay Area, according to leaked documents reviewed by the Guardian.

But checking the documents against Google’s platforms reveals that in some cases Google did not necessarily ban the users they reported to the authorities, and some still have accounts on YouTube, Gmail and other services.

The users were often threatening violence or otherwise expressing extremist views, often associated with the far right.

The documents come from the so-called “Blueleaks” trove, which hackers acquired from the servers of a hosting company in Texas which had been used by several law enforcement agencies. It contains hundreds of thousands of documents from more than 200 agencies, dated between 1996 and June 2020.

The leak has been authenticated by cybersecurity experts.

The Google documents containing subscriber information are signed by the company’s CyberCrime Investigation Group (CIG). CIG has been mentioned in coverage of criminal proceedings based on their reports, but its raw output to law enforcement agencies has never been exposed to public view.

In the Blueleaks trove, the documents are associated with the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center, part of a nationwide network of fusion centers, which were created after 9/11 to facilitate information sharing between state, federal, local and tribal law enforcement agencies.

Steven Renderos, executive director of MediaJustice, a nonprofit campaigning for a more just and participatory media wrote in an email: “In a moment of reckoning on the failure of police to keep people safe, it is reckless for Google to hand off private user information to law enforcement.”

Renderos added: “While the prevalence of hateful activities across Google owned platforms is a real problem, deflecting responsibility to police is not the solution.”

Iran Paid Bounties to Taliban-Linked Terrorist Group after Attack on U.S. Base in Afghanistan: Report

Iran paid Taliban fighters to attack American soldiers and other coalition forces in Afghanistan, CNN reported on Monday.

U.S. intelligence has assessed that a foreign government paid fighters who took part in at least six attacks over the past year, including a December 2019 suicide bombing at the U.S. Air Base in Bagram, Afghanistan, that left two dead and over 70 injured. Four American servicemen were among the injured, while the remainder were Afghan civilians.

While the name of the foreign government remains classified, two intelligence officials told CNN that the nation behind the payments is Iran. The Bagram attack was carried out by fighters from the Haqqani network, led by the Taliban second-in-command Sirajuddin Haqqani.

National Security Council officials recommended in March of this year that the Trump administration not take action against the Iran-Haqqani collaboration because the move would likely jeopardize peace talks with the Taliban, according to an internal memo.

Iran Will Export Weapons After U.S. Fails to Secure U.N. Arms Embargo

Iran's defense minister has said the country plans to export weapons as soon as sanctions preventing such sales are lifted, following the U.S. failure last week to extend a United Nations arms embargo on Tehran.

Brigadier General Amir Hatami told reporters Sunday that sanctions have been unable to stifle Iran's arms industry, and vowed that the country "will use all capacities in the world to meet its arms requirements, selling and exporting weapons after sanctions removal," according to the Mehr News Agency.

Hatami was one of several Iranian officials to celebrate the American failure to convince the U.N. Security Council to extend the arms embargo, which is due to expire in October.

DALLAS — Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday the Texas Department of State Health Services had brought in a “data team” to determine why the positivity rate of COVID-19 tests spiked to record levels in the first two weeks of August, reaching 24.5% on Wednesday.

The positivity rate is the percentage of COVID tests that come back positive. The higher the percentage, the more alarming to public health experts.

Abbott has previously said he would consider a positivity rate of above 10% a red flag for spread of the coronavirus in Texas.

When he announced the reopening of Texas in late April, after a month-long shutdown of many businesses, the positivity rate was around 5%.

It steadily increased from mid-June through mid-July, reaching a high of 17.4% on July 16, then decreasing to 12% by the end of the month.

But on August 1, the positivity rate began a rapid two-week ascent.

DSHS press officer Lara Anton said the data experts discovered that a computer upgrade performed Aug. 1 meant multiple positives were uploaded to the state’s lab reporting system.

The data experts also discovered coding errors from one hospital lab and one commercial lab in the state.

Once those errors were resolved, tests from those sites were uploaded.

The resulting artificially high positivity rate could have been troubling for businesses.

Abbott said Thursday the positivity rate needed to “go back below 10% for a sustained period of time,” before he would consider reopening additional businesses.

The positivity rate fell to 16% Thursday and remained there on Friday.

The governor also said a decrease in demand for testing across the state has impacted the positivity rate.

When only people who feel sick are getting tested, the percentage of positives is likely to be higher.

According to Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, most testing sites in the county are seeing fewer people.

He said Eastfield College is averaging about 200 tests per day – far below its 500-test capacity.

Capacity at Ellis Davis Field House is 1,000 per day and that hasn’t been met in a while, Jenkins said.

Dallas County Director of Health and Human Services Dr. Phillip Huang said he’s not surprised by data processing issues being experienced by public health tracking systems.

“We are still dealing with paper faxes of lab data and lab reports - hundreds of those a day that we’re having to deal with,” Huang said.

“The systems have not really been designed to handle this many numbers,” he said. “It’s an unprecedented situation we’re dealing with.”

According to Anton, the state expects the positivity rate to “generally be higher until testing demand increases and the backlog of cases smooth out.”

She did not give a timeline for when that might happen.

Huang said it is important to focus on trends from multiple data points, like hospitalizations and ER visits as well as the positivity rate.

“Data shows us what’s going on in our community - the spread, which populations it is affecting, what geographic areas are being most affected - all those things rely on the data,” he said.

“There’s not going to be perfect data, but we need to get as good clean data as we can.”

2nd man sentenced in human trafficking case

HARRISBURG, Pa. - A second man has been sentenced for his role in a prostitution ring in southeastern Pennsylvania.

After several delays, Barry Schiff was sentenced last week to a minimum off 55 1/2 years in state prison, state police said in a news release.

Schiff and his co-conspirator, Kenneth Crowell, were convicted of human trafficking and prostitution charges in the ring operation that spanned Lancaster, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York counties and southern New Jersey.

A grand jury concluded both men recruited young women for the commercial sex trade, and Crowell was responsible for posting advertisements while Schiff used drugs to lure some of the victims into prostitution, authorities said.

Although true "cyborgs" -; part human, part robotic beings -; are science fiction, researchers are taking steps toward integrating electronics with the body.

Such devices could monitor for tumor development or stand in for damaged tissues. But connecting electronics directly to human tissues in the body is a huge challenge. Now, a team is reporting new coatings for components that could help them more easily fit into this environment.

The researchers will present their results today at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall 2020 Virtual Meeting & Expo. ACS is holding the meeting through Thursday. It features more than 6,000 presentations on a wide range of science topics.

"We got the idea for this project because we were trying to interface rigid, inorganic microelectrodes with the brain, but brains are made out of organic, salty, live materials," says David Martin, Ph.D., who led the study. "It wasn't working well, so we thought there must be a better way."

Traditional microelectronic materials, such as silicon, gold, stainless steel and iridium, cause scarring when implanted. For applications in muscle or brain tissue, electrical signals need to flow for them to operate properly, but scars interrupt this activity. The researchers reasoned that a coating could help.

Silver Soars, Gold Retraces Over 50% Of Last Week's Plunge As Dollar Dumps-lowest since June 2018

Last week was a tough one for gold and silver investors. Both metals saw significant corrections. This led some people to declare the gold bull market dead. But, as SchiffGold.com notes, historically, big corrections have been a normal feature of gold bull runs.

Last Tuesday, the price of gold dropped more than 5%, falling far below the $2,000 level. It was the worst single-day rout in seven years. Gold continued to fall in Asian trading Wednesday morning and briefly dropped below $1,900 before clawing back later in the session. Silver also had a precipitous fall, diving some 13%. In fact, we can look back at other big gold bull markets and see this phenomenon play out. In 1979, gold climbed over 274%, rising from just over $200 an ounce to over $800 an ounce. But during that year, there were 11 corrections of more than 3%. At one point in August of that year, gold plunged over 12%. Seven of those corrections were greater than the 5% drop we saw last Tuesday.

Silver corrected a dozen times that year, falling more than 5% each time. The biggest selloff led to a 23% freefall in October. Silver also dropped 18% just before making its top. We saw a similar pattern of corrections in gold’s bull run between 2009 and 2011. In that time, gold gained 116.7% but corrected more than 3% 17 times. Eleven of those corrections were greater than 5%. That averages to roughly one big pullback every two months. The biggest drop was 10.6% in December 2009.

Meanwhile, silver dropped more than 5% 23 times during its bull run between 2009 and 2011 on its way to a 339.5% gain. But, we already seeing prices comeback strongly with Gold having retraced over 60% of last week's drop...And Silver soaring once again. This is happening as the dollar tumbles back to its lowest since June 2018 You’re going to see big selloffs during a bull market. We will likely see plenty more before the current gold bull runs its course. It’s important not to panic when metals sell off.

Gold and silver are not up because of COVID. Now, COVID is part of the reason, but it’s not the actual cause. You see, what happened is governments, and in particular central banks, they have responded to COVID by printing a lot of money. Governments are running big deficits and central banks are printing the money to monetize those deficits, especially the Federal Reserve. And so, it is the money printing. It is the inflation that central banks are creating in order to monetize government debt that is a response to COVID — that is helping to drive the gold price higher. So, it is not COVID itself that is bullish for gold. It is the government’s response. It is central bank and Federal Reserve policy in response to COVID that is very bullish for gold.”

The bottom line is the Fed isn’t about to normalize rates or end quantitative easing or shrink its balance sheet. And it is not going to worry about inflation. As long as the Fed persists in this extraordinary monetary policy, the momentum will stay with gold and silver.

U.S. equity markets rallied Monday morning, putting the S&P 500 on the verge of record territory.

The benchmark S&P 500 gained 0.32% the opening minutes of trading while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 53 points or 0.19% and the Nasdaq Composite was higher by 0.59%. The S&P needs to finish above 3,386.15 to close at a record high and eclipse 3,393.52 to set a new intraday peak. A record high may not be too far away after Goldman Sachs raised its yearend S&P 500 target by 20% to 3,600, citing stronger-than-expected U.S. growth helped by the firm’s belief at least one COVID-19 vaccine will be discovered by the end of the year. Looking at stocks, Apple Inc. continues its quest to become the first U.S. company to reach a $2 trillion valuation, needing to top $467.77 a share to achieve the level.

Barrick Gold Corp. surged after a regulatory filing out Friday evening showed Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway established a position of nearly 21 million shares, worth $563 million. Berkshire also sold large portions of its stakes in JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

UAE and Israeli Companies Sign Deal on Stem Cell Research

Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centers signed an accord with Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. to cooperate on research and development, the second such deal after the United Arab Emirates and Israel began normalizing relations.

The memorandum of understanding “enables both parties to capitalise on their expertise in cell therapies & deliver regenerative medicine solutions,” Abu Dhabi Government Media Office said in a tweet.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called Emmanuel Macron a “hypocrite” after he used a Sunday tweet to publicly call for the European Union to “continue to mobilize” on the side of anti-government protesters in Belarus.

The ministry’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, wrote on Facebook on Monday that the French president should call for support for those taking part in protests in the EU, not Belarus, which lies outside of Brussels’ orbit. The landlocked country is a full member of two alliances which serve as alternatives to the EU and NATO in Europe – the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

A new CNN poll about the race between President Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden shows what amounts a statistical dead heat among registered voters nationwide and a virtual tie in battleground states.

The poll found that 50 percent of those polled support Biden while 46 percent support Trump. However, the margin of error for results among registered voters is 4 percentage points, which means Trump and Biden could be in a tie.

The poll also found that since the June CNN poll, Biden has slipped by 5 percentage points in the poll while Trump the president has gathered strength. In June, the former vice president was at 55 percent support while Trump was at 41 percent support.

Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California said Saturday that President Donald Trump should be removed from office using the 25th Amendment.

During an MSNBC interview, Waters objected to Trump’s comments acknowledging that questions have been raised about whether Sen. Kamala Harris of California, the presumptive Democratic vice presidential candidate, might not meet the citizenship qualifications for president.

“I have no idea if that’s right,” Trump said Thursday, according to Fox News.

To Waters, those were fighting words.

“The president of the United States of America is unbelievably divisive. The president lies. He’s pitting people against each other, going back to the old birther argument that they attempted to use against Obama,” she said, referring to the controversy over whether former President Barack Obama was in fact a citizen and eligible for the presidency.

“This is a president that is the most deplorable human being that I have ever encountered in my life. And he’s undermining our democracy. We cannot take any more of this president,” said Waters, who has insisted Trump be impeached from the first moments of his presidency.

While attacking Trump, Waters said attacking someone is wrong when Trump does it.

“This president is not only attacking the person that was just appointed or selected by Biden to be his vice president, and he is not hesitant to do it. This man has no shame. The name-calling, he called her nasty, on and on and on. I don’t know how much more the American people can take,” she said.

Waters then said that issues related to whether the Postal Service can handle the volume of mail the upcoming election will generate and Trump’s comments opposing mass mail-in voting mean he should be removed from office.

“As a matter of fact, when you couple that with what he’s doing, undermining our democracy, tearing up our post office, I believe that it is time for Section 4 of Amendment 25 to be put in place and his cabinet should send to Nancy Pelosi, the speaker, as identified in the Constitution, that this man should be removed from office,” Waters said.

Bitcoin Daily: China Expands Digital Cash Pilot; California Bill Defining Digital Assets Moves Forward

China’s Ministry of Commerce is moving forward with its plan for a digital currency, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The plan will come with a large number of cities in which to test the currency, including Beijing and the provinces Tianjin and Hebei in the north, the Yangtze River Delta to the south, and the Guangdong province and the neighboring cities of Hong Kong and Macau along the country’s prosperous southern coast, WSJ reported.

The project’s policy design is set to be complete by the end of the year, although there’s no set date for when the expansion will begin.

In addition, the less-wealthy parts of China, in the central and western areas of the country, will have a chance at trials for the digital currency if they meet the program requirements, WSJ reported.

The move comes as numerous places around the world look into digital currencies for official business, including the state of California, as it moves ahead with a digital asset bill, Assembly Bill 2150.

According to a report by Cointelegraph, the bill passed by the state Senate Banking and Financial Institutions committee, which is looking to define digital assets and analyze their impact on the state and consumer protections.

China Is Approaching the Release of Digital Yuan by Expanding its Trials

As the idea of issuing the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) is gaining traction worldwide, China makes practical steps to make their digital yuan release closer. Now, the country is going to expand its trials to test the CBDC potential on a larger scale.

CoinIdol, a world blockchain news outlet, has reported the start of the first digital yuan trials back in spring 2020. Initially, it covered four locations across the country: the cities of Chengdu, Suzhou, Shenzhen, and Xiong'An. It included major commercial banks of the country as well as some well-known global brands such as McDonald’s and Starbucks.

Now, as the Wall Street Journal reports, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) plans on expanding the pilot’s area to the country’s major cities and provinces including Beijing, the provinces of Tianjin and Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta region, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The expansion is mostly targeted at checking the operation of the CBDC on a larger scale, as well as shaping of final policies before the full-fledged launch. However, the PBoC haven’t provided any specific date of the expansion start, as well as the planned launch. At the same time, the institution stated that final policy-shaping is expected to be completed before the end of 2020, so the expansion is likely to start in the days ahead.

As I mentioned in an article published back in February, the brochure spoke about how the institution was now dedicated to ‘rediscovering‘ its roots, ‘sharpening‘ its mission and ‘rejuvenating‘ its membership.

This apparent attempt at modernising came in the wake of the deaths of the Trilateral Commission’s two founding members – David Rockefeller and Zbigniew Brzezinski – and also that of former European Chairman of the Commission Peter Sutherland.

On reading the literature, it was plain to see that the group were working to ensure its long term survival by seeking the next generation of corporate, political and academic members, all in a bid to maintain the goals of it’s founding fathers, which include the implementation of a ‘New International Economic Order‘.

One of the highest-ranking officials at the California agency that regulates private utilities says she is being forced out of her job after she sought to recover $200 million in fees owed to the agency.

Alice Stebbins, who has been executive director of the California Public Utilities Commission since February 2018, was placed on administrative time off and believes her employer is preparing to fire her. Stebbins’ attorney sent a letter Tuesday to her bosses, the five commissioners who govern the agency, claiming she was being retaliated against for trying to “clean up a broken CPUC.”

The letter says Commission President Marybel Batjer told Stebbins that she would be ousted because of ethical concerns about a handful of hires she allowed. But Stebbins told The Chronicle that she suspects the real reason has something to do with about $200 million in outstanding fees that the agency has not collected.

Coast Guard, SCDHEC respond to diesel release on Plum Island

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Coast Guard and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) continue to respond, Sunday, to a report of a diesel release near the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant that occurred Saturday morning.

A Coast Guard Sector Charleston pollution response team along with SCDHEC personnel are monitoring the response of red-dye diesel that was released into a culvert and marsh near Dill Creek. The release had a potential of up to 3,100 gallons. The responsible party has hired the oil spill response organization, HEPACO, to conduct clean up procedures.

HEPACO responders arrived on scene, Saturday, and deployed sorbent pads and hard boom in Dill Creek and Wappoo Creek and used a vacuum truck to remove fuel from the marsh on the northeast side of the water treatment plant.

Sunday’s clean up efforts focused on replenishing and maintaining sorbent pads and hard boom in the marshy areas. The oil spill response organization is reporting 3,000 gallons of diesel and water mix has been collected since the incident.

Coast Guard interdicts 16 migrants 14 miles east of Haulover Inlet

MIAMI — The Coast Guard, along with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations, halted a migrant smuggling operation Wednesday, approximately 14 miles east of Haulover Inlet.

A CBP AMO aircraft crew spotted a 25-foot pleasure craft traveling approximately 14 miles east of Haulover Inlet and vectored two CBP surface asset crews to the scene. The CBP crews embarked the 11 Haitian males, four Haitian females, one Bahamian male, one Bahamian female and transferred them to the Coast Guard Cutter Manatee (WPB-87363) crew.

The smuggler was transferred ashore to CBP custody and the interdicted migrants were repatriated to Freeport, Bahamas.

“People should never trust these criminal organizations with their lives,” said Lt. Cmdr. Juan Carlos Avila, Coast Guard Sector Miami chief of enforcement. “Attempting to smuggle yourself into the country via the maritime environment is both extremely dangerous and illegal. With the consistent danger these smuggling ventures present, our crews and partner agencies remain persistently vigilant to protect lives and enforce federal laws.

Feds release new regulation for sex offenders

The Justice Department announced a new regulation Monday spelling out detailed nationwide requirements for sex offender registration under a law Congress passed in 2006.

The regulation, which stems from the federal Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, requires convicted sex offenders to register in the states in which they live, work or attend school. It details specific information that registered sex offenders across the U.S. must provide to officials.

While the law required that sex offenders provide personal information, the regulation codifies precisely what information must be provided, including name, birth date, Social Security number and specific information about travel, vehicles and professional licenses. The regulation also sets out the time required to remain on a sex offender registry, ranging from 15 years to life, depending on the offense.

COVID relief loans went to Ukrainian tycoons accused of money laundering, records show

Five American companies owned by Ukrainian tycoons who are accused of laundering money and using the misappropriated funds to help buy U.S. assets were approved for as much as $13.3 million in loans through a federal program aimed at saving jobs during the pandemic, according to U.S. government records.

CC Metals & Alloys, Felman Production, Felman Trading Americas, Optima Management Group, and Optima 777 were among the more than 600,000 U.S. businesses approved for loans of $150,000 or more under the federal government’s Paycheck Protection Program, commonly called the PPP, Treasury Department records show.

The U.S. Justice Department filed a civil complaint on August 6 that accuses Ukrainian billionaires Ihor Kolomoyskiy and Hennadiy Boholyubov of laundering hundreds of millions of dollars from a Kyiv-based bank and using the misappropriated funds to help purchase assets in the United States, including alloy and steel plants as well as real estate.

The two men control CC Metals & Alloys, Felman Production, Felman Trading Americas, Optima Management Group, and Optima 777 with their U.S. associates, Uriel Laber and Mordechai Korf, according to the Justice Department’s lawsuit.

Trump Administration Finalizes Drilling Plans in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

THE TRUMP administration on Monday finalized plans for an oil and gas leasing program in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, opening a 1.5 million-acre section of land to drilling.

Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said his agency is meeting obligations set under a 2017 bill that approved oil and gas leasing on the refuge.

"Congress directed us to hold lease sales in the ANWR Coastal Plain, and we have taken a significant step in meeting our obligations by determining where and under what conditions the oil and gas development program will occur," Bernhardt said in a statement.

The refuge is home to polar bears, migrating caribou, arctic foxes and other wildlife. Environmental groups and some Alaska Natives have opposed the plan.

"Make no mistake. The American people will not stand for the liquidation of our nation's most iconic wilderness," Adam Kolton, the executive director at Alaska Wilderness League, said in a statement. "We will continue to fight this at every turn, in the courts, in Congress and in the corporate boardrooms. Any oil company that would seek to drill in the Arctic Refuge will face enormous reputational, legal and financial risks."

The agency hasn't yet set a date for its first oil and gas rights auction, but Bernhardt said a lease sale could happen by the end of the year. If that timeline holds up, it could make it difficult for Democrats to reverse the decision should they take the White House in the November election.

People in North Korea are reportedly being forced to give up their pet dogs so they can be used as dog meat for restaurants.

The move by the leader Kim Jong Un is thought to be aimed at appeasing rising discontent among the public amid a dire economic situation in the secretive country, including food shortages.

Pet dogs are thought to be owned mostly by the elite and wealthy in the capital Pyongyang and are seen by authorities a symbol of capitalist "decadence", while ordinary people have pigs and other livestock.

Mr Kim issued a ban on pet ownership in July, denouncing it as "a tainted trend by bourgeois ideology", according to South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper, citing a source.

The source said: "Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down."

Democrats have spent several days flogging the false “mailbox conspiracy” theory that President Donald Trump is deliberately crippling the U.S. Postal Service so that it cannot handle votes by mail in November — even forcing it to remove mailboxes.

The truth is that the mailboxes were removed because mailboxes are always being removed. At least 14,000 were removed during the Obama-Biden administration. Democrats are creating a new hysteria to cast Trump as a tyrant and motivate their conspiracy-theory-addled voters. Former Vice President Joe Biden has enthusiastically inflamed this phony conspiracy theory — far more directly than Trump can be said to have “promoted” or “encouraged” the Kamala Harris “Birther” theory (which he declined to pursue). The truth is far more mundane. The U.S. Postal Service has been a problem for years, constantly losing money. In 2009, the postmaster general proposed moving to five-day-per-week mail delivery to cut costs. President Barack Obama criticized the service that year for failing to keep up with private sector competitors. The Obama-Biden administration considered closing nearly 3,700 post office locations, and proposed cutting 12,000 postal jobs. (Update: Note that the photograph of “retired” mailboxes, above, is from 2009, during the first year of the Obama-Biden administration.)

President Trump tried a different tack, demanding in 2018 that Amazon lower the prices it charged the U.S. Postal Service for delivering its packages to consumers. One aspect of ongoing cost management is the removal of mailbox from areas where few people deposit mail. Kimberly Frum, a spokeswoman for the service, told The Hill (via the Blaze) that low-volume mailboxes are regularly removed to cut costs: She said that low-volume mailboxes are a financial drag on the Postal Service, which lost more than $2 billion in the second quarter. “It is a fluid process and figures can vary from day-to-day,” Frum said. “Historically, mail boxes have been removed for lack of use and installed in growth areas.” “When a collection box consistently receives very small amounts of mail for months on end, it costs the Postal Service money in fuel and workhours for letter carriers to drive to the mailbox and collect the mail. Removing the box is simply good business sense in that respect. It is important to note that anyone with a residential or business mailbox can use it as a vehicle to send outgoing mail.” The removal of mailboxes has been halted until after the election, to avoid further confusion (sown deliberately by Democrats and the media). But even with fewer mailboxes, the U.S. Postal Service can probably handle the delivery of ballots, Byron York argues in the Washington Examiner. It handles hundreds of millions of items daily. The bottleneck is not necessarily the U.S. Postal Service, but rather the state and local election officials who set arbitrary deadlines for postmarking ballots, and who will have to sort out millions more additional mailed ballots than they are used to handling. In many states, they have never done anything like it before.

Mexican Soldiers Kill 9 Alleged Gunmen At Texas Border

CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Officials say Mexican soldiers killed nine alleged gunmen along the border with Texas in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas.

The Mexico Attorney General’s office in Reynosa said the confrontation occurred Sunday morning in Miguel Aleman, across the Rio Grande from Roma, Texas. The office said its personnel observed the recovery of the bodies. The alleged aggressors were wearing military-like uniforms.

Soldiers came under fire from gunmen in the brush while on patrol, according to a spokesperson from Tamaulipas’ security coordinating group, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It was not immediately clear which criminal group the gunmen belonged to. The area has been the scene of clashes between the Northeast cartel — a splinter of the Zetas — and the Jalisco New Generation cartel and the Gulf cartel, which has long controlled illicit traffic on that end of the border.

Authorities near Chicago are searching for a United Airlines executive who was last seen 11 days ago

Authorities in northeast Illinois are searching for a United Airlines executive who has been missing for nearly two weeks. United said Jake Cefolia, its senior vice president in charge of worldwide sales, was last seen on August 6.

The Chicago Sun Times reports that on Friday, more than 100 people and police dogs combed the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in search of the 49-year-old executive. Cefolia's vehicle was found at the preserve, where he was known to run a 9- to 10-mile route, according to ABC7 Chicago.

"Our friend and colleague, Jake Cefolia, SVP of Worldwide Sales, was last seen Thursday evening, August 6th," a United spokesperson told Business Insider. "We're concerned about his well-being and have been in touch with Jake's family over the last couple of days to offer them our support. Former Obama White House advisor Valerie Jarrett on Sunday sounded off on the criticisms of presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s vice president pick, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA). MSNBC “Kasie DC” host Kasie Hunt asked Jarrett about a recent New York Times column, entitled, “The Undertold, Undersold Story of Kamala Harris,” which asks the question: “As a prosecutor, she can make you tremble. But as a trailblazer, can she make you cry?” Jarrett expressed disappointment with the column and asked if the same language would be used to “describe a man.”

“When are we gonna say, ‘Well, are the men going to make us cry?'” Jarrett asked. “I think the question we put is this: Would you ask the same thing of a man? Would you use the same language, in the same way, to describe a man?” she continued. “This whole issue about whether women are mean or nasty or ambitious. What’s wrong with ambition? Who, in their right mind, wants to be President or Vice President of the United States, who isn’t ambitious? This is a teaching moment, not just for the media, but I think for America to say women are going to be moving to positions of power, and you better get used to it. And you better treat us equally. Level playing field.”

It looks like the United States Post Office is getting in the business of voting.

It has recently been unearthed that he USPS filed for a patent on February 7, 2020 for a "Secure Voting System" that uses a blockchain access layer. Obviously, this could be one of the strongest signals of a welcome adaptation to blockchain by the U.S. government since blockchain was thrust on the map by Bitcoin.

"A voting system can use the security of blockchain and the mail to provide a reliable voting system," the patent application says. "A registered voter receives a computer readable code in the mail and confirms identity and confirms correct ballot information in an election. The system separates voter identification and votes to ensure vote anonymity, and stores votes on a distributed ledger in a blockchain."

The "United States Postal Service" is listed as the applicant on the application.

"Voters generally wish to be able to vote for elected officials or on other issues in a manner that is convenient and secure," the application says. "Further, those holding elections wish to be able to ensure that election results have not been tampered with and that the results actually correspond to the votes that were cast. In some embodiments, a blockchain allows the tracking of the various types of necessary data in a way that is secure and allows others to easily confirm that data has not been altered."

Equally as interesting as the patent itself is the fact that the application was filed before the coronavirus had wreaked total havoc on the country and long before the idea of mail in voting was being tossed around by pundits and the mainstream media on the daily.

Kevin Clinesmith Plea Agreement Set for August 19 Before Obama Appointed FISA Court Judge James Boasberg

Former FBI Attorney Kevin Clinesmith is expected to plead guilty to altering Carter Page evidence to support the FISA warrant used to spy on the Donald Trump campaign in 2016.

38-year-old Clinemsith altered an email from CIA investigators used to request a FISA warrant and renewals on Trump campaign advisor Carter Page.

Carter Page previously worked as a source for the CIA, however Clinesmith falsely said Page was “never” a CIA source.

According to Durham’s charging document (and also in IG Horowitz’s report), “certain individuals” on the Crossfire Hurricane were told in an August 2016 memorandum that Page was a CIA asset — so who else knew?

Despite members of the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane team knowing Carter Page was a CIA asset, that information was omitted from the first three FISA warrants on Page.

“Mr. Clinesmith had provided the unchanged C.I.A. email to Crossfire Hurricane agents and the Justice Department lawyer drafting the original [October 2016] wiretap application,” Techno Fog posted from the New York Times report.

Clinesmith’s plea agreement was set today for August 19th — Wednesday — in front of Judge James Boasberg who is currently the presiding judge over the FISA Court.

Judge James Boasberg was appointed by Obama in 2011.

Norway arrests citizen suspected of spying for Russia

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A Norwegian citizen has been arrested after allegedly meeting with a Russian intelligence officer in an Oslo restaurant, Norway's domestic intelligence agency said Monday.

The man was arrested Saturday after handing over information, the agency said, adding that the alleged actions “could harm fundamental national interests.”

The Norwegian Police Security Service didn’t identify the arrested individual. The man in his 50s met “with what is believed to have been a Russian intelligence officer,” said Line Nyvoll Nygaard, a prosecutor for the intelligence agency.

The security service said the citizen is suspected of violating a Norwegian law that carries a maximum prison term of 15 years.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday he would volunteer to be among the first to try a Russian vaccine for the novel coronavirus if it proved effective.

Moscow's decision to approve the vaccine and produce here the first batches after less than two months of human testing has raised concerns among some scientists considering only about 10% of clinical trials are successful.

A South Florida CBS affiliate, CBS 12, posted the primary election results for over a half-dozen races last night to their website, days before the final votes are to be counted. Florida’s final absentee ballots and in-person election day voting occurs on Tuesday from 7am to 7pm. Despite this, congressional candidate Laura Loomer, who is running in the Republican primary to take on far-left career politician Lois Frankel, found herself shocked to see that 100% of precincts reporting their tallies late Sunday night.

The “results” showed the establishment candidates facing Loomer with a lion’s share of the votes and the journalist turned candidate barely snagging a few thousand votes. Given the fact that Loomer has built a massive volunteer army and raised over $1,000,000 and spent over $500,000 in the primary, those numbers are statistically impossible. However, if you are looking to suppress excitement among her very dedicated fanbase in the final hours of the election, posting “election results” like this would be one way to demoralize people into staying home and becoming hopeless.

China has new weapon to target airfields, state media says

Aug. 17 (UPI) – Beijing's military has developed a hybrid weapon capable of destroying an entire airfield with one hit, according to Chinese state media on Monday.

The weapon, described as a cross between an air-to-ground missile and a guided bomb, can annihilate airfields with "high accuracy," China Central Television and Global Times reported.

China's new weapon has a missile-like appearance, weighs about 1,100 pounds, and comes with a stealth function to avoid radar, according to the report.

The bomb-carrying weapon comes with a range of at least 37 miles, which would allow the Chinese military to fire the weapons outside the enemy's air defense zone, CCTV said.

U.S., UAE hold joint military exercise in Arabian Gulf

Aug. 17 (UPI) – The United States and the United Arab Emirates concluded a joint live fire exercise in the Arabian Gulf last week, the Navy Central Command said on Monday.

The four-day exercise involved the UAE's Joint Aviation Command and the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. Air Forces Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Central Command in air operations supporting maritime surface warfare, the Navy said.

U.S. and Emirati pilots also participated in live fire exercises, which officials said offers an opportunity to practice strike capabilities against simulated surface targets.

The exercise used the expeditionary sea base vessel USNS Lewis B.Puller as a floating staging platform for aircraft of both countries. The ship was also used by UAE pilots to complete deck landing qualifications prior to the exercise.

AC-130W gunships of the U. S. Air Force, and rotary and fixed-wing aircraft of the UAE, were involved, as well as U.S. Navy Cyclone-class and MK VI patrol boats.

"Interoperability is a key to success in any domain," U.S. Air Force Capt. Ashton Sawyer, chief of the Air Forces Central Command, said in a statement. "Constant training ensures our combined forces are ready to defend against any enemy."

The event follows a joint integration exercise in the Arabian Gulf, involving the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, in the spring of 2020.

Cops Go Undercover to Catch Pedophile, Bust Fellow Cop Trying to Have Sex with a Child

Hillsborough County, FL — Last month, a detective with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, beginning on July 24, began working undercover on a social media app to ensnare pedophiles looking to have sex with children. During the sting, a pedophile responded to the undercover officer pretending to be a little girl. When the HCSO deputy moved to arrest that pedophile, they discovered he was a fellow police officer.

Sergeant Stephen Utter, 37, with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office was arrested this month for trying to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex. According to investigators, Utter was made immediately aware of the girl’s age before he began to sexually groom her. Luckily, the 14-year-old girl was a cop and not an actual child.

According to authorities, during the conversations online and via text message, Utter sent explicit messages detailing the sexual acts he wished to perform on the juvenile.

Once he’d incriminated himself enough, police moved in to arrest him.

When deputies advised the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office of the investigation, MCSO worked with HCSO to arrest Utter.

Utter was arrested and booked on charges of unlawful use of a two-way communications device, transmission of harmful material to a minor and use of computer devices to solicit certain illegal acts.

After his arrest, police issued a canned statement noting how Utter’s actions do not echo the sentiments of other cops in the area.

“The conduct of this sergeant is in no way a reflection of the thousands of deputies across Tampa Bay who are committed to serving their communities with integrity,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.

“We will not tolerate this predatory behavior from anyone, including a fellow law enforcement officer, as displayed by the quick actions both the Manatee and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Offices took to arrest this individual.”

Unfortunately, however, cops are caught on a regular basis attempting to or actually committing crimes against children. In fact, TFTP has reported on an officer in this exact same department who committed horrific acts against children. And, thanks to his blue privilege, he avoided jail.

As we reported, a former Manatee County Sheriff’s Lieutenant was sentenced for his sadistic and sickening acts against three children. Officer Dale Couch was arrested after children told authorities what he had done to them — violently sexually abused them.

Mexican Judge Drops Child Sex Abuse Charge Since 10-Year-Old ‘Didn’t Enjoy It’

Comments made by a Mexican judge in Jalisco as he dismissed several sex assault charges against a man accused of abusing a 10-year-old are sparking outrage. The suspect, who remains in jail on another charge, is a top police official in Puerto Vallarta.

Jalisco State Judge Jorge Luis Solis Aranda dismissed one charge of corruption of minors filed against Luis Alonso “N” in connection with an alleged sexual assault involving a 10-year-old girl. The judge reportedly claimed that charge did not apply to the case because “the victim did not enjoy” the incident–so she was not “corrupted.” The judge did allow one charge of non-aggravated child abuse to move forward. According to local news outlets, the defendant could request bond since the case now considered less severe.

The case originally began on July 26, when local police officers patrolling the Salitrillo neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta reportedly caught Luis Alonso inside his black VW Golf with a nude 10-year-old girl, Jalisco’s Attorney General’s Office revealed earlier this month. At the time of the initial arrest, the suspect worked as the human resources director of the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Police.

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro took to social media to address the case. According to Alfaro, he spoke with the head of state courts in Jalisco where he asked that the judge be removed from his post. “He will pay the consequences of his immorality,” Alfaro said regarding the judge.

Alfaro said that the state government would put all the needed resources to keep the suspect in jail and “ensure he gets the punishment he deserves.”

‘Time is up’: US intensifies effort to break Huawei supply chains

President Trump’s administration unveiled new regulations to limit Huawei’s ability to purchase critical technology from foreign companies. “The Trump Administration sees Huawei for what it is — an arm of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) surveillance state — and we have taken action accordingly,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday. “The United States has provided ample time for affected companies and persons — primarily Huawei customers — to identify and shift to other sources of equipment, software, and technology and wind-down their operations. Now that time is up.” Pompeo issued that statement in conjunction with a new decision from the Commerce Department, which barred 38 Huawei affiliates from doing business with foreign companies that use U.S. technology. The restrictions could deprive the company of key resources in a race to build 5G wireless telecommunications infrastructure for other countries, which U.S. officials say would allow Chinese intelligence agencies to control Western data. “We will not tolerate efforts by the CCP to undermine the privacy of our citizens, our businesses’ intellectual property, or the integrity of next-generation networks worldwide,” Pompeo said. “We are backing up our words with actions across the U.S. Government.”

The new actions come as the Democratic convention kicks off on Monday. Which candidate, Trump or Joe Biden, is toughest on China is likely to be a major issue in the campaign. Some China hawks doubt the efficacy of such pronouncements based on the Commerce Department’s history of providing waivers that softened the impact of the restrictions. The Commerce Department hinted at providing such regulatory relief in the future “by making a limited permanent authorization for the Huawei entities” to continue doing business that involves “ongoing security research critical to maintaining the integrity and reliability of existing and currently ‘fully operational networks’ and equipment.” The new rules also require companies to apply for licenses that could draw scrutiny from Commerce Department officials, but the significance of that switch depends on whether the applications for major deals are denied. “And the license process is secret,” the American Enterprise Institute’s Derek Scissors said. “All that's been done is to jam Huawei transactions into a black box.”

Pompeo sounded more confident on the strictness of the crackdown. “The Department of State has engaged in vigorous diplomacy for more than a year to share what we know about Huawei and other untrustworthy vendors with allies and partners around the world,” he said. “The United States will continue to restrict most U.S. exports to Huawei and its affiliates on the Entity List for activities that threaten U.S. national security and international stability. Postmaster general agrees to testify before House panel

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has agreed to testify before the House Oversight and reform Committee next Monday about recently implemented cost-cutting measures at the U.S. Postal Service that have sparked fears that some mail-in ballots might not be delivered in time for Election Day.

House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said in a statement Monday that DeJoy and Robert Duncan, the chairman of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors, had agreed to testify in response to her request the day earlier.

"The American people want their mail, medicines, and mail-in ballots delivered in a timely way, and they certainly do not want drastic changes and delays in the midst of a global pandemic just months before the election," Maloney said.

The hearing will come after the expected House vote on Saturday on legislation authored by Maloney to prevent the Postal Service from implementing changes to operations that it had in place as of January while the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing.

The hearing, which is expected to begin at 10 a.m. Monday, will take place on the same day that Republicans begin their convention to formally nominate President Trump as the party's nominee for the White House.

The widespread use of face masks across the country has made it more challenging for police officers to identify suspects, solve crimes, and make arrests, according to law enforcement officials. "It does impact our jobs, but the safety of the people in this world with this pandemic has got to be above that," Charleston Police Department's Office of Community-Oriented Policing Capt. Dustin Thompson said. The South Carolina official described masks as just another hurdle that police are accustomed to having to overcome to solve crimes. "We’re used to working cases where people are wearing masks and the video's grainy or something is covering their face," said Thompson, who previously led the violent crimes unit in the South Carolina city. "We’re really good at going off other clues: their clothing, their shoes, what they're wearing, their vehicle, tattoos — using other means to identify people who commit crimes." San Antonio Police Department spokeswoman Alisia Pruneda acknowledged the issue but said it isn't the first time criminals have disguised themselves, and officers and detectives who investigate crimes "work diligently and tirelessly to bring suspects to justice" regardless of challenges. "Anytime a suspect has their face covered during a crime ... it does make it more difficult to identify," a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department acknowledged in an email. "However, we are not seeing any trends or patterns with mask wearing that make us unable to solve cases."

Brenna Angel, spokeswoman for the Lexington Police Department in Kentucky, said the agency has seen "some cases recently involving suspects wearing masks that appeared to be COVID-related masks." Thompson said detectives can use cameras to trace someone's steps, possibly to a spot where they may have taken off the mask. "You might see them coming out of a convenience store taking off their mask," Thompson said. The city of Charleston, like most mid-size and large U.S. cities, has software that is able to scan images from video footage against a database to see if they match images in the system.

However, facial recognition software cannot work on someone wearing a mask, making other clues about a person's description or tracing their movement before or after an incident important. "When a suspect is wearing a mask, the software cannot be used," Detroit Police Sgt. Nicole Kirkwood wrote in an email. "When this occurs, investigators will have to rely on valuable evidence to assist them in identifying suspects such as victims and witness statements, clothing and vehicle descriptions, direction of travel, video footage from other sources, etc." Beverly Hills, California, Police Sgt. Max Subin said he was not aware of any major issues the masks have had for his department. "If you have a crime where a suspect is wearing a mask regardless of if it's a paper mask or cloth mask, yes, identification would be harder, but that one thing is not affecting law enforcement," said Subin. Oklahoma City Police Capt. Larry Withrow said he was unaware of instances where officers or investigators had difficulty solving cases due to the mask mandates.

Duke University researchers have engineered rhodium nanoparticles (blue) that can harness the energy in ultraviolet light and use it to catalyze the conversion of carbon dioxide to methane, a key building block for many types of fuels.

Duke University researchers have developed tiny nanoparticles that help convert carbon dioxide into methane using only ultraviolet light for the energy source. With the catalyst discovery in hand to do this important chemistry using ultraviolet light, the team now hopes to develop a version that would run on natural sunlight, a potential boon to alternative energy.

The team’s paper has been published in Nature Communications.

Chemists have long sought an efficient, light-driven catalyst to power this reaction, which could help reduce the growing levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere by converting it into methane, a key building block for many types of fuels.

Jie Liu, the George B. Geller professor of chemistry at Duke University said, “The fact that you can use light to influence a specific reaction pathway is very exciting. This discovery will really advance the understanding of catalysis.”

The researchers say the rhodium nanoparticles are made more efficient when illuminated by light and they have the advantage of strongly favoring the formation of methane rather than an equal mix of methane and undesirable side-products like carbon monoxide. This strong “selectivity” of the light-driven catalysis may also extend to other important chemical reactions.

Despite being one of the rarest elements on Earth, rhodium plays a surprisingly important role in our everyday lives. Small amounts of the silvery gray metal are used to speed up or “catalyze” a number of key industrial processes, including those that make drugs, detergents and nitrogen fertilizer, and they even play a major role breaking down toxic pollutants in the catalytic converters of our cars.

Rhodium accelerates these reactions with an added boost of energy, which usually comes in the form of heat because it is easily produced and absorbed. However, high temperatures also cause problems, like shortened catalyst lifetimes and the unwanted synthesis of undesired products.

In the past two decades, scientists have explored new and useful ways that light can be used to add energy to bits of metal shrunk down to the nanoscale, a field called plasmonics.

Henry Everitt, an adjunct professor of physics at Duke and senior research scientist at the Army’s Aviation and Missile RD&E Center at Redstone Arsenal, AL explains, “Effectively, plasmonic metal nanoparticles act like little antennas that absorb visible or ultraviolet light very efficiently and can do a number of things like generate strong electric fields. For the last few years there has been a recognition that this property might be applied to catalysis.”

Peddling Influence and Stealing Secrets: Foreign Governments and U.S. Universities

Judicial Watch last month sued the U.S. Department of Education for records of money funneled from foreign governments to American colleges and universities. The numbers are big—billions of dollars—and difficult to pin down, despite federal reporting requirements. The foreign governments often are U.S. adversaries. What are they after?

In some instances, professors are pawns in long running games of technological theft. That’s the case of part-time UCLA Professor Yi-Chi Shih, convicted in Los Angeles in 2019 of trying to steal sensitive microchip technology and ship it to China, where it could be used for fighter jets and missiles.

In other cases, foreign governments—and the Chinese government in particular—are playing a subtler game, attempting to absorb intellectual property without outright theft. That appears to be the case of Harvard Professor Charles Lieber, indicted in June for allegedly making false statements about his work for Wuhan University of China. Lieber is the former chair of Harvard’s Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department; he’s a leader in the revolutionary field of nanotechnology—the ability to manipulate atoms and molecules across a wide variety of scientific and industrial platforms. Wuhan of course lately is famous as the original source of Covid-19, but Lieber’s arrest has no connection to the virus.

But something big was going on at Wuhan. The indictment notes that from 2012 through 2015, Lieber was paid $50,000 per month, plus $158,0000 in living expenses, plus an award of $1.5 million to set up a research lab. At roughly the same time, he was taking in $15 million in research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Defense Department for his work at Harvard.

What did the Chinese want for their money? It seems clear: they wanted to know what Lieber knew—what he was producing for the Americans.

The American grants required disclosure of all research support, financial conflicts of interest, and foreign collaboration. The indictment alleges that Lieber lied to U.S. authorities about his affiliation with Wuhan University and the Chinese “Thousand Talents Program.”

The Justice Department noted in charging Lieber that the Thousand Talents Program is “one of the most prominent Chinese talent recruitment plans designed to attract, recruit, and cultivate high-level scientific talent in furtherance of China’s scientific development, economic prosperity and national security.” The program seeks “to lure Chinese overseas talent and foreign experts to bring their knowledge and experience to China, and they often reward individuals for stealing proprietary information.”

Three Individuals Charged with Arranging Adoptions from Uganda and Poland Through Bribery and Fraud

Three women were charged in a 13-count indictment filed on Aug. 14 in the Northern District of Ohio for their alleged roles in schemes to corruptly and fraudulently procure adoptions of Ugandan and Polish children through bribing Ugandan officials and defrauding U.S. adoptive parents, U.S. authorities, and a Polish regulatory authority.

Margaret Cole, 73, of Strongsville, Ohio, Debra Parris, 68, of Lake Dallas, Texas, and Dorah Mirembe, 41, of Kampala, Uganda, were charged in the indictment. In relation to the Uganda scheme, Parris and Mirembe were each charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and commit visa fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, three substantive FCPA counts and three substantive counts of money laundering. Parris was also charged with one count of mail fraud. In relation to the Poland scheme, Parris and Cole were each charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States. Cole was further charged with one count of making a false statement to a U.S. accrediting entity and one count of making a false statement to a Polish authority.

Abstract

The xenobiotic nature and lack of degradability of polymeric materials has resulted in vast levels of environmental pollution and numerous health hazards. Different strategies have been developed and still more research is being in progress to reduce the impact of these polymeric materials. This work aimed to isolate and characterize polyester polyurethane (PU) degrading fungi from the soil of a general city waste disposal site in Islamabad, Pakistan. A novel PU degrading fungus was isolated from soil and identified as Aspergillus tubingensis on the basis of colony morphology, macro- and micro-morphology, molecular and phylogenetic analyses. The PU degrading ability of the fungus was tested in three different ways in the presence of 2% glucose: (a) on SDA agar plate, (b) in liquid MSM, and (c) after burial in soil. Our results indicated that this strain of A. tubingensis was capable of degrading PU. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we were able to visually confirm that the mycelium of A. tubingensis colonized the PU material, causing surface degradation and scarring. The formation or breakage of chemical bonds during the biodegradation process of PU was confirmed using Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The biodegradation of PU was higher when plate culture method was employed, followed by the liquid culture method and soil burial technique. Notably, after two months in liquid medium, the PU film was totally degraded into smaller pieces. Based on a comprehensive literature search, it can be stated that this is the first report showing A. tubingensis capable of degrading PU. This work provides insight into the role of A. tubingensis towards solving the dilemma of PU wastes through biodegradation.

Good News: Fauci’s Out and Common Sense Might be Returning

These days it seems there is not much good news out there. People are still panicked over the coronavirus, governments are still trampling civil liberties in the name of fighting the virus, the economy –already teetering on the edge of collapse – has been kicked to the ground by what history may record as one of the worst man-made disasters of all time: shutting down the country to fight a cold virus.

That’s why we’ll take good news wherever we can get it, and President Trump’s hiring of Dr. Scott Atlas to his coronavirus task force may just be that good news we need. As the media has reported, President Trump has sidelined headline-hogging Anthony Fauci in favor of Atlas, the former Stanford University Medical Center chief of neuroradiology.

Recall, Fauci was the “expert” who told us a few months ago that we would never be able to shake hands again.

Fauci’s advice, forecasts, and assessments proved to be wildly wrong, contradictory, and just plain bizarre: Don’t wear a mask! You must wear a mask. Masks are important as symbols. Put on goggles. Stay home! Churches must be severely restricted but Black Lives Matter marches and encounters with strangers met over the Internet are perfectly fine.

When Anthony Fauci demanded a lockdown of the economy for an indefinite period he actually seemed oblivious to the havoc it would wreak on the economy and on people’s lives. People like Fauci and others who demanded lockdowns and stay-at-home orders were still collecting their paychecks, so what did they care about anyone else?

Dr. Scott Atlas is not only a former top physician and hospital administrator: as a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution he also understands the policy implications of locking a country down.

On April 22, Dr. Atlas wrote an op-ed in The Hill titled, “The data is in — stop the panic and end the total isolation.” In the article he made five main points that are as true today as when he wrote them: an overwhelming majority of people are at no risk of dying from Covid; protecting older people prevents hospital overcrowding; locking down a population actually prevents the herd immunity necessary to defeat the virus; people are dying because they are not being treated for non-Covid illnesses; we know what part of the population is at risk and we can protect them.

Imagine how many thousands of lives could have been saved had the Administration listened to Dr. Atlas back in April. CDC Director Robert Redfield admitted last month that lockdowns were killing more Americans than Covid. “First do no harm” was thrown out the window and nearly six months of wrong-headed policy has done perhaps irreparable harm to the country.

South Dakota and Sweden did virtually nothing to lock down or restrict their populations and they actually fared better than lockdown states in the US. They had lower death rates, their hospitals were never over-run with Covid patients, and they have an economy to go back to.

We very much hope that Dr. Atlas will not “moderate” his message to please the blob in Washington. Trump’s Covid policies to this point have caused more harm than good. With Fauci out of the driver’s seat we finally have a chance of turning things around.

Trump also criticised presidential candidate Joe Biden about foreign policy, by calling Biden "mentally exhausted," during a Fox News interview.

The White House said on Sunday Trump spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, and said the leaders "agreed that Greece and Turkey must commit to dialogue, which is the only path to resolving their differences."

Trump said he is "dealing with world class chess players" in these dialogues with world leaders, singling out Erdogan among the national leaders.

Ex-CIA Officer Charged With Spying For China; Disclosed "Substantial Amount Of Highly Classified" Info

The DOJ has charged a 15-year veteran of the CIA with selling US secrets to China - after he accidentally revealed his spying to the FBI, according to NBC News - which notes that "The method prosecutors said they used to get him to reveal the nature of his espionage was worthy of a spy novel itself." Court documents said 67-year-old Alexander Yuk Ching Ma of Honolulu was charged with violating U.S. espionage laws. Prosecutors said he joined the CIA in 1967 then served as a CIA officer until he retired from the agency in 1989. For part of that time he was assigned to work overseas in the East-Asia and Pacific region. Twelve years after he retired, prosecutors said Monday that Ma met with at least five officers of China's Ministry of State Security in a Hong Kong hotel room, where he "disclosed a substantial amount of highly classified national defense information," including facts about the CIA's internal organization, methods for communicating covertly, and the identities of CIA officers and human assets. -NBC News

Following his departure from the agency, Ma became a Chinese linguist in the FBI's Honolulu field office, where he allegedly used his access to highly classified information to copy or photograph sensitive documents concerning the United States' guided missile and weapons systems, as well as other sensitive information he passed along to his Chinese handlers, according to the charging document. Ma was caught after the FBI arranged a meeting with an undercover officer claiming to be from a CCP operative investigating "how Ma had been treated, including the amount he had been compensated" by the Chinese government. The allegedly traitorous spook was captured on video counting $2,000 in cash given to him by the operative, who told Ma that it was to acknowledge his efforts for Beiing. Ma, a Hong Kong native, said on tape that he "wanted 'the motherland' to succeed,' and admitted to providing classified information to China's Ministry of State Security."

Air Force Commander, Major General Amikam Norkin, summed up the necessary work to improve the effectiveness of the Air Force and their training for the coming years.

Some of the points of the program are designed for a decade ahead, others are shorter-term.

The coronavirus pandemic, the deteriorating economic situation in Israel and in the world, as well as a general view of the strategic situation in the Middle East played an important role in the program.

As a result, it was decided to accelerate a number of plans for the future and implement them in the coming years.

Barack Obama had cultivated Black Lives Matter support during his presidency. Five police officers were killed in Dallas during a July 2016 BLM protest against police violence. They had been killed by a black sniper who told the police he was targeting white officers.

The president spoke at their funeral. “We have all seen this bigotry in our lives at some point,” said Obama. “None of us is entirely innocent. No institution is entirely immune. And that includes our police departments. We know this.” The day after the funeral, Obama hosted BLM officials at the White House.

The organization that helped raze and loot American cities in the spring and summer of 2020 was a frontline militia as well as a fund-raising mechanism. The “Donate” tab on the BLM website links to ActBlue, a Democratic Party financial instrument that pushed more than $1.5 billion in small donations into the 2018 midterms.

Democratic Party money was also backing an information warfare campaign targeting Trump and his base. In May the press reported that retired general Stanley McChrystal was advising Defeat Disinfo, a political action committee using technology developed to counter ISIS propaganda. Pentagon-funded research had been retooled to sabotage the president’s re-election campaign.

McChrystal had been critical of Trump in the past. After defense secretary Mattis’s 2018 resignation, he praised the retired Marine general and slammed Trump’s plan to withdraw forces from Syria and Afghanistan.

“If you pull American influence out, you’re likely to have greater instability, and of course it’ll be much more difficult for the United States to try to push events in any direction,” said McChrystal.

“There is an argument that says we just pull up our stuff, go home, let the region run itself. That has not done well for the last fifty or sixty years.”

He’d led elite special forces units before being named as commander of US troops in Afghanistan in 2009. He later acknowledged that he didn’t have a plan for Afghanistan. “I wish I did,” he said he told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“If we pull out and people like al-Qaeda go back, it’s unacceptable for any political administration in the US. It would just be disastrous, and it would be a pain for us,” said McChrystal. “If we put more troops in there and we fight forever, that’s not a good outcome, either. I’m not sure what the right answer. My best suggestion is to keep a limited number of forces there and just kind of muddle along and see what we can do.”

He was relieved of duty in 2010 after the publication of a magazine article in which his staff criticized Vice President Biden. In 2011, McChrystal teamed up with First Lady Michelle Obama in an initiative assisting military families.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida is being accused of assaulting a minor during an altercation about her record on the environment.

The former Democratic National Committee chairwoman is facing challenger Jen Perelman on Tuesday in the Democratic primary for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District seat.

The Floridian reported Perelman accused Wasserman Schultz of putting her hands on a 16-year-old Perelman volunteer during a campaign event over the weekend.

The outlet reported the volunteer is Martina Velasquez.

Per the allegation, Velasquez confronted Wasserman Schultz regarding her record on environmental issues when the congresswoman “physically shoved” and “verbally accosted” the teen.

The alleged assault occurred as Velasquez was “passing out campaign literature.”

In response to a now-deleted Twitter post by a person who was defending Wasserman Schultz regarding the reported incident, Perelman attacked the former DNC chairwoman.

Wasserman Schultz had not responded to the allegation that she pushed the teen or acknowledged the alleged incident online as of Monday afternoon.

The Western Journal reached out to her campaign for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
