The issues people have in trusting supposedly objective news outlets to deliver straight-news reporting free from political biases go back at least three decades.
But a new major poll from Gallup and the Knight Foundation gives a more in-depth look at just how bad people believe media bias is and who those polled believe is most responsible for the political division in this country. Hint: it’s not politicians:
The poll noted an increase in the percentage of Americans who see too much bias in ostensibly objective reporting as a “major problem.” According to the poll, 73 percent of Americans share that belief, up from 65 percent in 2017.
Meanwhile, a stunning 84 percent of Americans agree that “the media is to blame for political division in this country,” though the same percentage also believe the media “can serve as a healing force.”
In perhaps the most stunning findings, almost 80 percent of Americans say news organizations they don’t trust are “trying to persuade people to adopt a certain viewpoint” while just 12 percent say media outlets are trying to report “accurately and fairly but are unable to do so.” Nearly three-quarters of those polled (74 percent) are worried that the owners of media companies are “influencing coverage.”

More than half of Americans polled (54 percent) say they believe reporters are “misrepresenting the facts” and another 28 percent believe reporters are “making [facts] up entirely.” More than three-quarters (78 percent) of Americans believe “misinformation” that is shared on social media is “the leading problem with news today.”
Beyond the devastating (for the media) findings that an overwhelming majority view them as biased and largely responsible for political divisions, what’s especially interesting is the that this is not just some fly by night poll of 300-1000 participants. This survey was conducted between November 2019 and February 2020, when over 20,000 participants were interviewed.
The good news for the media here is that “the vast majority of Americans (84%) say that, in general, the news media is ‘critical’ (49%) or ‘very important’ (35%) to democracy.” The bad news is that until they decide to start delivering the news down the line while allowing viewers and readers to form their own opinions, the distrust in their reporting will only increase and people will continue to seek alternative options for news from sources they find more trustworthy.
The mainstream media as a whole – especially the political news media in and around the DC/NYC/Beltway area – has two options: They can straighten up their acts and stop insulting the intelligence of their audiences or they can continue to show their (mostly left-wing) partisan stripes and turn audiences off.
If recent history is any indication, however, they’ll be going with option two – because they’ve shown over and over again that when it comes to demonstrating a commitment to objective reporting versus pushing biased political angles that help Democrats, they will choose those biased political angles nearly every time.

PALM BEACH, Florida — Three people were arrested after trespassing at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, police revealed today.
Around midnight Friday, Palm Beach Police were patrolling the area when they noticed a car with running lights on. As officers got closer to the vehicle, the driver took off for a short distance.
The three people in the car, identified only as teenagers, ran off as police gave chase. The suspects scaled a wall into Mar-a-Lago.
Officers and a K9 eventually caught up with the trio and they were taken into custody. The dog also located a backpack with an AK-47 rifle and a loaded magazine inside. Nobody claimed ownership of the weapon.
The teens are charged with trespassing with a firearm, burglary with a firearm and resisting arrest without violence.
Police say it is unlikely the teens knew the wall they jumped was property belonging to the President of The Untied States.

PAWTUCKET — Hasbro says they designed a cute “Trolls” doll to giggle when she is placed in a sitting position.
But an online petition at change.org says that the button between the doll’s legs that activates the sounds “is conditioning our children to think pedophilia is OK.”
The DreamWorks Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy was made by the Pawtucket-based company, which said Wednesday that it is pulling the item from the marketplace.
“This Trolls World Tour doll named Poppy has a button on her private area under her skirt. When you push this button on the doll’s private she gasps and giggles,” says the online petition by Jessica McManis. “This is not okay for a child’s toy! This toy needs to be removed from our stores. What will this toy make our innocent, impressionable children think? That it’s fun when someone touches your private area?”
The petition is aimed at Target, Walmart, Amazon, Dollar General and Family Dollar Stores.
“This feature was designed to react when the doll was seated, but we recognize the placement of the sensor may be perceived as inappropriate,” Hasbro spokeswoman Julie Duffy said Wednesday afternoon in an email to The Providence Journal. “This was not intentional and we are happy to provide consumers with a replacement Poppy doll of similar value through our consumer care team. We are in the process of removing the item for purchase.”

The Russian cargo ship Rhosus, which in September 2013 brought 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate to Lebanon, a cargo which is suspected to have triggered the deadly blasts that killed over 100 people in Beirut on Tuesday, was registered in Moldova, officials in Chisinau told BIRN.
The Moldovan authorities confirmed to BIRN on Wednesday that the Rhosus was sailing under a Moldovan flag until it docked in Beirut, where its cargo license was eventually revoked.
“The Rhosus’s cargo license has been revoked since 2014 after it was detained in Beirut. It has not circulated under the Moldovan flag since then,” said the communication bureau of the Moldovan Naval Authority.
The director of the Moldovan Naval Authority, Igor Zaharia, also confirmed to BIRN that a local Moldovan company handled the papers to register the Rhosus in the name of a foreign company in February 2012 and that the vessel was removed from the national register in February 2014.

This film was shot in Beirut before the larger explosion went off. Most of the audio sounds like it's in Arabic. The person who filmed it allegedly died (which is apparent from how the phone was tossed around during recording).
It sounded like there might have been something important said. So, could an anon that speaks Arabic translate? (A full transcript would be most helpful.) Commenters noted that the woman seemed to be riled up by something and that there appeared to be sounds of one or more airplane before the explosion. It could give more understanding as to what went on.

Beirut explosion reportedly caused by fertilizer seized from Russian businessman
The 2,700 tons of fertilizer believed to have caused the explosion that devastated Beirut had been confiscated from a Russian businessman — who “abandoned” his cargo ship after an unscheduled stop, according to reports.
Officials revealed Tuesday that the blast that killed at least 100 — and left up to 300,000 homeless — appeared to have been sparked by ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse since it was confiscated in 2014.
There were repeated warnings on the dangers of storing it — including one that it could “blow up all of Beirut” — but “nothing was done,” official sources told Reuters, calling it “negligence.”
The timeline and size of the cargo suggest it was taken from the MV Rhosus, according to the Associated Press, as well as Lebanon’s LBCI, citing sources at a Supreme Defense Council meeting.
The Rhosus is owned by Igor Grechushkin, a Russian national who now lives in Cyprus, according to the Moscow Times.
It had been traveling from Georgia to Mozambique in 2013 when it experienced an apparent malfunction and made an unscheduled stop in Beirut, the reports said.
Grechushkin then declared bankruptcy — and “abandoned” the ship in Lebanon, leaving its crew stranded on the vessel for months before the ammonium nitrate could be offloaded, the Moscow Times said.
The ammonium nitrate had been stored in a warehouse in the port of Beirut since then, the outlet said.
“Owing to the risks associated with retaining the ammonium nitrate on board the vessel, the port authorities discharged the cargo onto the port’s warehouses,” lawyers involved in the case previously wrote, according to the AP.
“The vessel and cargo remain to date in port awaiting auctioning and/or proper disposal,” the lawyers said in the 2015 article.

Facebook censored the President of the United States on Wednesday, taking down a video posted to President Trump’s personal page of an interview on Fox and Friends from the morning in which Trump talked about children and the coronavirus as it relates to opening schools. Facebook claims Trump was spreading misinformation by saying in the interview that children are “almost immune” to the virus.
Facebook spokesman Andy Stone confirmed the censorship in comments to NBC News, “”This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation,” Andy Stone, a Facebook policy spokesperson, said”

U.S. Treasury Department says it expects to borrow $2 trillion in the remainder of 2020
The Department of the Treasury anticipates borrowing $2.16 trillion before the year ends, according to a press release put out Monday.
The release specifies that the department plans to borrow $947 billion in the third quarter of 2020 (July-September), plus $1.216 trillion in the year's final quarter (October-December). The figures "assume $1 trillion of additional borrowing need in anticipation of additional legislation being passed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak," the release reads.
The department borrowed $2.753 trillion from April through June of this year.
Congressionally authorized coronavirus relief packages for families and businesses have totaled about $3.6 trillion so far. Congress is currently debating another massive spending bill to help protect and stimulate the nation's economy, which has floundered since lockdown measures began this spring. Democrats have requested about $3.5 trillion in additional relief spending, while many Republicans are instead pushing to limit the next wave of relief spending to around $1 trillion.

Pentagon chief says Beirut blast likely an ACCIDENT, as Trump doubles down on possible ATTACK claims
US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the mammoth explosion that rocked Beirut was likely an accident, pouring cold water on a theory floated by the president, who claimed the Pentagon assessed that a “bomb” had set off the blast.
“[We’re] still getting information on what happened,” Esper told the Aspen Security Conference on Wednesday, but added “most believe it was an accident as reported, and beyond that I have nothing further to report on that. It’s obviously a tragedy.”
Hours after the massive explosion tore through a port in the Lebanese capital on Tuesday, killing at least 135 people and wounding more than 4,000, US President Donald Trump told reporters that he had met with “some of our great generals,” saying they felt the blast was “an attack, it was a bomb of some kind.”
Trump declined to elaborate on that assessment, and cited no evidence, but on Wednesday doubled down on his doubts.
How can you say accident? Somebody left some terrible explosive type devices and things around... perhaps it was that. Perhaps it was an attack.
“I don't think anybody can say right now. We're looking into it very strongly. Right now, you have some people think it was an attack and some people that think it wasn't. In any event, it was a terrible event,” Trump told a press conference.
Despite widespread speculation and rumors about a potential attack, which were only fueled by the president’s remarks, Lebanese authorities have brushed aside any suggestion of foul play and maintain the blast was accidental, resulting from the improper storage of some 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate at a port warehouse. A probe into the exact cause of the blast is ongoing, and authorities have placed a series of port officials under house arrest as they look into those responsible for the vast store of dangerous chemicals.

Can anybody help obtain the data we need to see if this crowd-sourced reported radiation spike (continuing at about 10x background level or more) correlates with the Beirut Explosion?
It would also be nice to know what kind of radiation they are measuring - gamma would arrive very quickly, alpha and beta would arrive later because they are particles.
