Trump cancels RNC in Jacksonville: ‘The timing of the event is not right’

President Donald Trump abruptly announced Thursday that the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville is canceled, ending a weeks-long sprint to pull off the party’s signature political event amid a pandemic.

Citing ongoing concerns about Florida’s coronavirus outbreak, Trump told reporters during a White House briefing, “The timing of the event is not right. It’s just not right.”

The news came as a surprise to several Florida Republicans close to the event and the president. U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, one of Trump’s closet allies in Congress, said he didn’t know Trump had made this call. Nor did state Sen. Joe Gruters, the chairman of the Republican Party of Florida who helped bring the event to the Sunshine State.

The International Schiller Institute held an online forum today with guest experts in the Intel Community. The topic was: “Neither Flynn Nor Stone Were Guilty—There Was No Russian Hack” Bill Binney Makes His Case“. Many excellent observations and activities of the Deep State Intel Community were discussed, but they saved their best for last.

The presentation was riveting. As the headlines to the presentation noted:

William Binney, a thirty-year veteran of the National Security Agency and its former technical director, will expose the continuing suppression by British intelligence agencies and their American counterparts of his evidence disproving the entire “Russiagate” story.

“We can prove, that all the data that Wikileaks published from the DNC, that was downloaded on the 23rd and 25th of May, and also the 26th of August of 2016; all of that carried the signatures of being downloaded to a thumb drive or a CD-ROM, and physically transported,” Binney says. “So, we can prove that in a court of law. In fact, I put that in sworn affidavits that I submitted in the Roger Stone case and also in the General Flynn case. And the judges would not let my testimony in. I’ve been hard pressed to find anything (Russia) did in the 2016 election, let alone anything they’re trying to do in the 2020 election,” Binney said.

Roger Stone, speaking with Sean Hannity on FOX TV July 13 in the aftermath of the commutation of his jail sentence by President Donald Trump, stated: “I could have proved at trial, using forensic evidence and expert testimony from fellows like Bill Binney, former NSA counter intelligence expert…that no one hacked the DNC, that there was no online hack of the DNC… But I wasn’t allowed to present that defense, because Judge Jackson would not allow it.”

During the two hour and twenty minute presentation the Gateway Pundit website went down. Suddenly our website was not available for updates. This lasted a short time. We notified the presenters as we found this unusual because we were beginning to report on Bill Binney’s comments that the CIA had more to do with the Russiagate story than Russia ever did, and boom, we were down. We had some difficulties for a brief period but then were able to again begin loading articles on the website.

Secretary of State Pompeo Signals Historic Shift in U.S.-China Relations

It will be up to future historians to judge President Richard M. Nixon's "opening" of China fifty years ago. America was optimistic over the potential that Maoist China might adopt aspects of capitalism. We believed that with more interaction, China would become more like our liberal democracy. As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said today, that course seemed inevitable - at the time.

The Vietnam war was still ongoing, and we college students wanted the war to end. Our male peers, after drawing a low number in the draft lottery, were sent overseas, their lives forever changed (or extinguished). So we were eager for the change that Nixon's new Asia policy seemed to signal.

This philosophy has guided American presidents for many terms. They naively treated the country run by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) like a normal nation, trusting it to apply the rule of law internally, and uphold its agreements internationally. However, a realistic assessment by the Trump administration found otherwise. Only the blind or willfully ignorant couldn't see that the CCP's primary goal has always been to rip off other countries through every means possible, to gain advantage for China, with an ultimate goal of Chinese hegemony. [1]

President Donald Trump began the relationship with CCP Chairman Xi Jinpeng cordially. While they dined at Mar-a-Lago, we learned (with trepidation) that Trump sent a cruise missile to bomb an empty warehouse in Syria over chocolate cake. [2] It signalled that America's new president meant business and had command of his military. Months later, Mr. and Mrs. Trump visited Beijing, receiving an honor never before afforded to any other nation's leader: a visit inside the ancient Imperial City, once the home of Chinese emperors, where no commoner was allowed to tread. Trump continued praising Xi effusively - saving Xi's "face" in front of his people, while leaving a generous opening for improved Chinese behavior. This seemed an auspicious start.

In late 2019, the Trump administration negotiated for a fair and reciprocal trade relationship with China, signing the historic Phase One Trade Agreement on January 15, 2020. [3] That very day, America got its first case of COVID-19 - an undesired Chinese import.

Yet many suspected trouble all along. In a February 2020 speech to the National Governors' Association, Mr. Pompeo publicly outlined some concerns. [4] The CCP had targeted governors, grading each as “friendly,” “hardline,” or “ambiguous” on their willingness to cooperate with CCP goals. Under Xi, he said, "China is moving exactly in the opposite direction – more repression, more unfair competition, more predatory economic practices; indeed, a more aggressive military posture as well... The Chinese Government has been methodical... It’s assessed our vulnerabilities, and it’s decided to exploit our freedoms to gain advantage over us."

Current news abounds with Chinese students and scientists, employees of the CCP People's Liberation Army, being charged with espionage, intellectual property theft, and other crimes. [5] through [22] The charges are new, but such crimes continue a long-established Chinese pattern of exploiting American openness.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper, at the Munich Security Conference, said, "The prevailing notion of the day was that, if we allowed the PRC [People's Republic of China] into the WTO [World Trade Organization] and other multilateral institutions, China would continue on its path of economic reform and eventually become a market-oriented trading partner. More broadly, increased engagement with the liberal world order would also spur political opening and help transform the PRC into a responsible global stakeholder. The more skeptical voices argued that, if granted membership, China would use the benefits of free trade and an open international order to grow its economy and access the technology required to build a strong military and security state capable of expanding the reach of their authoritarian rule. These were both credible arguments, but we all know which one is winning right now. It's not the former. In fact, under President Xi’s rule, the Chinese Communist Party is heading even faster and further in the wrong direction – more internal repression, more predatory economic practices, more heavy-handedness, and most concerning for me, a more aggressive military posture." [23, 24]

On July 16th, Attorney General William Barr, speaking to business leaders said, “The ultimate ambition of China's rulers isn't to trade with the United States. It is to raid the United States... If you're an American business leader, appeasing the PRC may bring short term rewards, but in the end the PRC’s goal is to replace you.” [25] Yet many American companies kow-tow to CCP pressure.

It was the last straw when China abrogated all international norms by failing to notify other countries as soon as it learned of a "novel coronavirus" from Wuhan that has since swept the planet. The ensuing closures have wreaked unprecedented economic damage to America and our allies.

America's new hard stance, bluntly confronting the CCP's aggression and taking new measures to protect America from them, is a long-overdue reversal of past administrations' failure to protect the American people from international predators.

This is a wake-up call.

What is unfolding before our very eyes—with police agencies defying local governments in order to tap into the power of federal militarized troops in order to put down domestic unrest—could very quickly snowball into an act of aggression against the states, a coup by armed, militarized agents of the federal government.

At a minimum, this is an attack on the Tenth Amendment, which affirms the sovereignty of the states and the citizenry, and the right of the states to stand as a bulwark against overreach and power grabs by the federal government.

If you’re still deluding yourself into believing that this thinly-veiled exercise in martial law is anything other than an attempt to bulldoze what remains of the Constitution and reinforce the iron-fisted rule of the police state, you need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid.

This is no longer about partisan politics or civil unrest or even authoritarian impulses.

This is a turning point.

Unless we take back the reins—and soon—looking back on this time years from now, historians may well point to the events of 2020 as the death blow to America’s short-lived experiment in self-government.

The government’s recent actions in Portland, Oregon—when unidentified federal agents (believed to be border police, ICE and DHS agents), wearing military fatigues with patches that just say “Police” and sporting all kinds of weapons, descended uninvited on the city in unmarked vehicles, snatching protesters off the streets and detaining them without formally arresting them or offering any explanation of why they’re being held—is just a foretaste of what’s to come.

One of those detainees was a 53-year-old disabled Navy veteran who was in downtown Portland during the protests but not a participant. Concerned about the tactics being used by government agents who had taken an oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution, Christopher David tried to speak the “secret” police. Almost immediately, he was assaulted by federal agents, beaten with batons and pepper sprayed

Another peaceful protester was reportedly shot in the head with an impact weapon by this federal goon squad.

The Trump Administration has already announced its plans to deploy these border patrol agents to other cities across the country (Chicago is supposedly next) in an apparent bid to put down civil unrest. Yet the overriding concerns by state and local government officials to Trump’s plans suggest that weaponizing the DHS as an occupying army will only provoke more violence and unrest.

We’ve been set up.

Under the guise of protecting federal properties against civil unrest, the Trump Administration has formed a task force of secret agents who look, dress and act like military stormtroopers on a raid and have been empowered to roam cities in unmarked vehicles, snatching citizens off the streets, whether or not they’ve been engaged in illegal activities.

As the Guardian reports, “The incidents being described sound eerily reminiscent of the CIA’s post-9/11 rendition program under George W Bush, where intelligence agents would roll up in unmarked vans in foreign countries, blindfold terrorism suspects (many of whom turned to be innocent) and kidnap them without explanation. Only instead of occurring on the streets of Italy or the Middle East, it’s happening in downtown Portland.”

The so-called racial justice activists who have made looting, violence, vandalism and intimidation tactics the hallmarks of their protests have played right into the government’s hands

They have delivered all of us into the police state’s hands.

Deputy mayor of Paris resigns over links with alleged child rapist

A deputy mayor of Paris resigned Thursday following protests over his links with alleged child sex abuser Gabriel Matzneff, an award-winning writer.

Christophe Girard, one of newly re-elected mayor Anne Hidalgo's deputies, told AFP he had no desire to have the issue "ruin" his life nor did he feel he had to "justify myself permanently for something that does not exist."

Opposition politicians and women's groups have asked for 64-year-old Girard's suspension and the opening of an internal investigation over ties to Matzneff, who is under investigation following claims by Vanessa Springora of a tortured under-age relationship with the author.

Matzneff is to stand trial next year on a charge of justifying paedophilia, and prosecutors launched a rape investigation the day after Springora's bestselling book, "Consent", was published.

A second woman has also claimed she was groomed and controlled by the writer.

Girard, in charge of cultural affairs for the Paris government, was questioned in March in connection with the investigation into Matzneff.

He was a senior executive at Yves-Saint Laurent in 1986 and 1987, when the design house provided financial support to Matzneff.

Matzneff had told the New York Times that thanks to Girard, he was able to stay for free at a hotel for two years with Springora.

In her book, Springora said staying at the hotel allowed Matzneff to evade police.

A member of Hidalgo's team said she welcomed Girard's "courageous" decision to step down.

Matzneff has never made any secret of his preference for sex with adolescent girls and boys.

Cindy McCain admits ‘we all knew’ about Epstein

Cindy McCain, the widow of late Sen. John McCain, blasted authorities who were "afraid" to arrest convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein even though everyone "knew" what he was doing.

"Epstein was hiding in plain sight," said Cindy McCain. "We all knew about him. We all knew what he was doing, but we had no one that was — no legal aspect that would go after him. They were afraid of him. For whatever reason, they were afraid of him."

McCain's comments came after she was questioned by an attendee during her appearance at the State of the World 2020 conference in Florida.

McCain said a girl from her daughter's high school was one of Epstein's victims and that she hopes Epstein "is in hell."

Epstein's massive wealth and his connections to powerful politicians and celebrities allowed him to continue trafficking young women and girls long after many had exposed his devious interests.

Dr. Barbara Sampson, the New York City medical examiner, said Epstein died by suicide at a Manhattan federal detention facility last August. His death and the circumstances surrounding it have created controversy after the former medical examiner of New York, Dr. Michael Baden, told 60 Minutes that he believes Epstein was murdered.

Cameras from outside Epstein's jail cell failed to record footage on the night of his death, and guards who were supposed to monitor him every 30 minutes fell asleep when the former financier died.

Agent's notes confirm IG report that August 2016 briefing with Trump and Flynn used to gather evidence for Russia probe

An FBI agent who was secretly inserted into Donald Trump's first counterintelligence briefing in August 2016 to gather evidence of Russia collusion recorded the specific questions the future president was asking intelligence officials as well as sizing up national security adviser Michael Flynn's behavior, according to a memo declassified and made public Thursday. "Trump asked the following question, 'Joe, are the Russians bad? Because they have more numbers are they worse than the Chinese?'" Agent Joseph Pientka wrote in his summary memo of the briefing with then-candidate Trump. "Writer responded by saying both countries are bad. The numbers of IOs present in the U.S. is not an indicator of the severity of the threat. Writer reminded Trump the Chinese asymmetrical presence in the U.S." The extraordinary notes confirm information first divulged last December by the Justice Department inspector general that the Comey FBI used the August 2016 briefing as a way of sizing up then-candidate Trump and Flynn in the Russia case and gathering evidence against them. Memos associated with the meeting show since-fired Agent Peter Strzok and departed FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith were involved in approving the effort by Pientka to use the briefing as an investigative tool instead of just an educational baseline intelligence meeting. Clinesmith was accused in the IG report of altering a key document in the Russia case and has left the bureau, though he has not been charged with wrongdoing.

Pientka's summary memo of the briefing shows the extent to which the FBI was gathering or seeking evidence against Trump and Flynn and likely will bolster claims by Republicans that the bureau was "spying" on Trump when it should have been giving the future president a defensive briefing about Russians seeking influence in the United States. Some of the observations recorded in the memo seemed to be of little or no investigative value. For instance, after Pientka discussed a matter involving signal intelligence, he recorded verbatim Flynn's response and Trump's mention of his youngest son. "At this time, Flynn interjected, 'I did SIGINT.' Writer responded that he could then appreciate what our country can do technically to exploit a Tier 1 target and we must extrapolate a Foreign Intelligence Service could do the same to us. Trump then stated, 'Yes I understand it's a dark time. Nothing is safe on computers anymore,'" the memo stated. "'My son is ten years old. He has a computer and we put a codeword on it. Within ten minutes he broke the codeword and we needed to put another one on the computer. Kids are genius,'" the memo quoted Trump as saying.

Goldman Sachs agrees $3.9 billion 1MDB settlement with Malaysia

U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs reached a $3.9 billion settlement on Friday with Malaysia over the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal that will see all criminal charges against the bank dropped. The deal includes a $2.5 billion cash payout by Goldman and a guarantee by the bank to return at least $1.4 billion in proceeds from assets linked to sovereign wealth fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), the two sides said.

The settlement is the biggest Malaysia has reached so far in its efforts to recover funds allegedly stolen from 1MDB, and is a big victory for the four-month old administration of Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

"We are confident that we are securing more money from Goldman Sachs compared to previous attempts, which were far below expectations," Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said in a statement. "We are also glad to be able to resolve this outside the court system, which would have cost a lot of time, money and resources," he said, adding that the deal would resolve all outstanding charges and claims against Goldman.

Malaysian and U.S. authorities estimate $4.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB in an elaborate scheme that spanned the globe and implicated high-level officials in the fund, former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Goldman staff and others. U.S. prosecutors said the money was used to buy artwork, including paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet, luxury properties in New York and London and to fund the "Wolf of Wall Street" movie.

Goldman helped the fund raise $6.5 billion in two bond offerings the bank underwrote, earning itself $600 million in fees, according to the U.S. Justice Department. Malaysian prosecutors filed charges in December 2018 against three of the bank's units alleging it misled investors. Goldman has consistently denied wrongdoing, saying that certain members of the former Malaysian government and 1MDB lied to it about how proceeds from the bond sales would be used. The units of Goldman Sachs pleaded not guilty to the charges. Goldman confirmed the settlement.

Its shares rose about 0.87% in early market trading as investors were cautiously optimistic about the bank resolving one part of its ties to the scandal. The bank has socked away around $3 billion in reserves for legal matters, more than covering the settlement with Malaysia. However, the bank still faces an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which is reportedly looking into violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The law makes it illegal to pay foreign government officials in order to secure their help in getting or keeping business.

A source told media in December that the bank was in talks with the U.S. government and a state regulator to possibly pay up to $2 billion to resolve the investigation. The Goldman deal could give a much needed boost to Muhyiddin's administration, which has a slim majority in parliament. The opposition is gearing up for snap elections. Muhyiddin came to power in March after forming an alliance with Najib's party which raised questions about whether that would affect several corruption cases against Najib.

On Friday, Muhyiddin said the government was committed to continuing efforts to recover other assets linked to 1MDB. Najib, who is facing dozens of charges over 1MDB, will face his first verdict on Tuesday in a case seen as a test for the country's efforts to stamp out corruption. Najib has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

Mysterious 'blue hole' near Florida wows scientists

There's a weird "blue hole" in the ocean floor off the coast of Florida that's wowing scientists.

It's about 425 feet deep and is located some 155 feet below the water's surface, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The site, dubbed the "Green Banana,” has been a hot topic both for scientists and deep-sea explorers, ABC News said. In August, scientists from NOAA and other organizations plan to embark on a mission to explore the hole, which is located some 50 miles southwest of Sarasota.

The configuration of the hole is somewhat hourglass shaped, which creates challenges for researchers, according to NOAA.

Overall, little is known about these blue holes "due to their lack of accessibility and unknown distribution and abundance," NOAA said in a statement.

In fact, the first reports of blue holes decades ago weren't from scientists or researchers, but from fishermen and recreational divers. Now, the two groups are working together to conduct scientific surveys and exploration of these mysterious holes.

"Blue holes are underwater sinkholes, similar to sinkholes on land," NOAA theorizes.

There are at least 20 blue holes off Florida's coast, but nobody knows how many there really are, said Fox13 News in Tampa.

Two days into his first regular season as Giants manager, Gabe Kapler might have a sticky situation within his clubhouse.

As the Dodgers and Giants introduced on the foul lines before Thursday’s season opener, San Francisco reliever Sam Coonrod was the only person on either team — managers, players, coaches and staff — who declined to kneel during a moment of silence meant to support Black Lives Matter.

After the 8-1 loss, Coonrod cited his faith for not kneeling, but he also disparaged what he believes to be some tenets of Black Lives Matter, comments that might not be viewed charitably by all in the clubhouse.

“I’m a Christian,” Coonrod said. “I can’t get on board on a couple of things I’ve read about Black Lives Matter, how they lean toward Marxism and said some negative things about the nuclear family.”

He was referring to comments made five years ago by a Black Lives Matter co-founder, acknowledging she was a Marxist, now cited repeatedly now by some conservative commentators.

Thursday’s issue was not the national anthem. Most Giants stood, while Kapler, coaches Justin Viele and Antoan Richardson, and a handful of players took a knee.

At issue was a moment of silence held before the anthem in support of Black Lives Matter, which Major League Baseball officially supports.

Everyone on both sides, including Coonrod, clutched a black ribbon that stretched from beyond first base, around the plate and beyond third base, as a show of solidarity. The 27-year-old Missourian was the only man from either club to remain standing.

He said the event caught him by surprise and he did not have a chance to talk to teammates beforehand. He might have to now, particularly Davis, an African American who has spoken passionately about the discrimination he has encountered.

“I meant no ill will by it,” Coonrod said. “I don’t think I’m better than anybody. I’m just a Christian. I believe I can’t kneel before anything but God, Jesus Christ. I chose not to kneel. I feel if I did kneel I’d be a hypocrite. I don’t want to be a hypocrite.”

Kapler had spoken to the team about respecting one another’s choices, and several players said they bought in. Coonrod said Kapler has told him he will respect their differences.

“The one thing we said is, we’re going to let people express themselves,” Kapler said. “We’re going to give them the choice whether they stand, kneel or do something else. That was a personal decision for Sam.”

The players who joined Kapler and the two coaches kneeling for the anthem were Davis, Mike Yastrzemski, Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence, Austin Slater, Trevor Gott and Wandy Peralta. Dodger Mookie Betts also kneeled.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said he has been given personal security after he and his family received hate mail and threats.

The backlash toward the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases compares to what he saw while advancing HIV/AIDS research in the 1980s and 90s, he said on CNN’s “The Axe Files” podcast.

Fauci, an infectious disease expert who has appeared alongside Donald Trump as a member of the White House coronavirus task force, has been a frequent target during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The kind of, not only hate mail, but also serious actual threats, are not good,” he told the podcast’s host, David Axelrod, who was the chief strategist for former President Obama’s presidential campaigns. “I don’t see how society does that.

“It’s tough. Serious threats against me, against my family, my daughters, my wife — I mean, really?” he continued. “Is this the United States of America? But it’s real.”

Trump told Fox News’ Chris Wallace last week that, despite a growing number of coronavirus cases in the United States, Fauci is “a little bit of an alarmist,” according to The Hill. Trump added that Fauci has “made some mistakes” in his approach to the pandemic.

Fauci has become a frequent target of some congressional Republicans and those in the White House.

Peter Navarro, White House trade advisor, accused Fauci of being “wrong about everything” in an opinion piece published in USA Today. U.S. Rep. Trump and the White House resumed their coronavirus press briefings on Tuesday without Fauci, who said he was not made aware of the plans or invited to join them.

Attacks made against Fauci reflect “the divisiveness of our society at a political level,” he said on CNN’s podcast.

While he received hate mail while battling the HIV/AIDS crisis, it was not as threatening as what he has received this year, he said.

BEAR, Del. (CBS) — Investigators in Delaware say they’ve caught the man wanted in connection to a fire at a church in Bear. Thomas Loftis III is accused of starting the fire at the Reach Church on Summit Bridge Road.

Investigators say multiple fires were ignited inside the sanctuary.

The fire caused about $250,000 in damages.

My remarks today are the fourth set of remarks in a series of China speeches that I asked National Security Advisor Robert Ou2019Brien, FBI Director Chris Wray, and the Attorney General Barr to deliver alongside me.

We had a very clear purpose, a real mission. It was to explain the different facets of Americau2019s relationship with China, the massive imbalances in that relationship that have built up over decades, and the Chinese Communist Partyu2019s designs for hegemony.

Our goal was to make clear that the threats to Americans that President Trumpu2019s China policy aims to address are clear and our strategy for securing those freedoms established.

Judge rules Seattle media companies must hand over unpublished protest images to police

Five news outlets, including The Seattle Times, will have to comply with a subpoena and give the Seattle Police Department unpublished video and photos from a May 30 racial justice protest that turned violent, a judge ruled Thursday.

King County Superior Court Judge Nelson Lee sided with the Police Department in a morning hearing, ruling that its subpoena was enforceable. He found that the photos and video were critical for an investigation into the alleged arson of SPD vehicles and theft of police guns.

Lee said the news organizations were not protected by a Washington state shield law that under many circumstances prevents authorities from obtaining reporters’ unpublished materials.

The judge placed some limits on the subpoena. He said police could use the images to identify suspects only in the arson and gun theft investigations. Detectives could not use the photos or video to pursue suspects in vandalism or other lesser crimes — even if police found such evidence.

The subpoena would also be limited to professional camera equipment and would exclude reporters’ cell phone photos and videos.

The Seattle Times and TV stations KIRO 7, KING 5, KOMO 4 and KCPQ 13 were all subpoenaed.

Lee ruled that the SPD had met its burden to overcome the shield law: that the images were “highly material and relevant” and “critical or necessary” to prove an issue that has a compelling public interest for its disclosure. Getting the stolen weapons off the street was one compelling public interest, Lee found.

The law also required the police to demonstrate that all “reasonable and available means” to obtain the information has been exhausted.

Seattle Times Executive Editor Michele Matassa Flores said the paper strongly opposes the subpoena and “believes it puts our independence, and even our staff’s physical safety, at risk.”

“The media exist in large part to hold governments, including law enforcement agencies, accountable to the public,” said Matassa Flores. “We don’t work in concert with government, and it’s important to our credibility and effectiveness to retain our independence from those we cover.”

The lawyer representing the media companies, Eric Stahl, argued Thursday that the police were casting too wide a net and couldn’t show that the images would identify the suspects.

“You have to have a strong reason to believe there is actually going to be critical evidence” in the images, Stahl said after the hearing. “We think there was too much speculation going on.”

The media companies have not yet decided if they will appeal the case, Stahl said.

In a statement, the ACLU of Washington said the ruling “threatens the independence of the media. A free and independent media is a cornerstone of our democracy, and at a time when our basic freedoms are under attack, the City of Seattle should be doing everything possible to protect those foundational freedoms.”

Brian Esler, a Seattle attorney hired to represent the Seattle police, did not respond to an interview request.

SPD detective Michael Magan testified at the telephonic hearing Thursday morning that the department was at a dead end in its investigations. Police have arrested two suspects stemming from the thefts and arson, and have partially identified others based on other images.

The May 30 protests included a large-scale nonviolent demonstration sparked by the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police earlier that week.

During the protests, vandals heavily damaged six police vehicles. They smashed windows, removed ballistic helmets, uniforms, emergency medical equipment and fire extinguishers, and used an accelerant to start fires in five vehicles, according to a police affidavit and other documents.

A loaded Glock 43 semi-automatic pistol and a loaded Colt M4 carbine rifle with a suppressor remain missing, according to the SPD affidavit.

The SPD subpoena seeks media images taken during a 90-minute span in a four-block area between Fourth and Sixth Avenue and Olive Way to Pike Street that day.

Lee set a hearing for July 30 at 9 a.m. to enter a final order. In the meantime, the parties are discussing how long it would take to produce the unpublished materials.

Andy Biggs wants Google court documents on how it uses data to be disclosed to public

Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs told a Maricopa County Judge overseeing a case related to Google that any trade secret or proprietary information about the tech giant should be made available to the public. In a Wednesday letter to Judge Timothy Thomason, Biggs referenced a current case in the Arizona court being fought out by the state attorney general and the online search engine over how the company handles Arizona residentsu2019 user data. u201cMy colleagues in Congress and I have previously expressed concerns over Googleu2019s concerning invasions of privacy. All branches of our government exist to protect the fundamental liberties of our citizens u2014 especially their privacy,u201d Biggs wrote.u201d On May 27, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich filed a lawsuit against Google for deceptive and unfair practices used to obtain usersu2019 location data, claiming the company exploits for its advertising business. As a result of the lawsuit, the subsequent Arizona attorney generalu2019s investigation turned up documents Google does not want the public to see but that the prosecutor's office believes the public has a right to know about. Googleu2019s attorney Jean Jacques Cabou now wants Maricopa County Judge Timothy Thomason to block Brnovichu2019s attempt to release the documents he received from the company during his investigation. u201cThe public has a strong interest in transparency and learning the full extent to which Google and other tech companies may be spying and surreptitiously collecting information from Arizonans, including constituents whom I represent,u201d Biggs wrote to Thomason. u201cAny information that is not considered a trade secret or proprietary to Google should be made available for the public.u201d

Google has been under scrutiny for invasion of privacy over tracking the whereabouts of its users even when users explicitly tell the service through its online settings not to, the Associated Press first reported. Last June, a $5 billion lawsuit was filed in a San Jose court accusing the tech company of secretly collecting information about what people browse on the web despite using Google's incognito mode.

Banks Continue War Against Gun Industry

In recent years, the financial industry has seemingly been at war with the firearm industry. This war has involved banks and other financial institutions severing all ties with various gun companies, not because these companies did anything wrong, illegal, unethical, or against their policies. No, their only crime is being in the wrong business.

To be fair, the war isn’t a very fair fight. The financial industry is massive and globe-spanning. The gun industry, by comparison, is tiny.

And yet, the battles continue.

It’s a slow and steady form of gun control that gradually gains momentum with limited public fanfare: if guns can’t be taken directly from the hands of citizens, the next best target is banks and financial institutions that allow transactions or loans for the industry.

Vining posted a call between himself and the California-based company on YouTube and told Fox News that they are no longer using PayPal for anything, personal or commercial, and that they do not intend to return.

NY Charges First American Financial for Massive Data Leak

In May 2019, KrebsOnSecurity broke the news that the website of mortgage title insurance giant First American Financial Corp. had exposed approximately 885 million records related to mortgage deals going back to 2003. On Wednesday, regulators in New York announced that First American was the target of their first ever cybersecurity enforcement action in connection with the incident, charges that could bring steep financial penalties.

Santa Ana, Calif.-based First American [NYSE:FAF] is a leading provider of title insurance and settlement services to the real estate and mortgage industries. It employs some 18,000 people and brought in $6.2 billion in 2019.

As first reported here last year, First American’s website exposed 16 years worth of digitized mortgage title insurance records — including bank account numbers and statements, mortgage and tax records, Social Security numbers, wire transaction receipts, and drivers license images.

The documents were available without authentication to anyone with a Web browser.

According to a filing (PDF) by the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), the weakness that exposed the documents was first introduced during an application software update in May 2014 and went undetected for years.

Worse still, the DFS found, the vulnerability was discovered in a penetration test First American conducted on its own in December 2018.

“Remarkably, Respondent instead allowed unfettered access to the personal and financial data of millions of its customers for six more months until the breach and its serious ramifications were widely publicized by a nationally recognized cybersecurity industry journalist,” the DFS explained in a statement on the charges
