500,000 Users Sign Up For Parler In Three Days After Twitter Suspends Pro-Trump Accounts

500,000 people created accounts on the social media platform Parler after Twitter banned two conservative accounts Tuesday.

Parler’s user base increased by 50% this week, bringing the total number of users to over 1.5 million, Mediaite reported Thursday.

The surge comes after Twitter permanently banned the account of Carpe Donktum, and locked the account of The National Pulse Editor-In-Chief Raheem Kassam. Both accounts, which were locked Tuesday, have over 200,000 followers.

Conservatives, who were already frustrated with Twitter for what they say is arbitrary and unfair banning of right-wing accounts, flocked to Parler after the two accounts were suspended. Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz both joined the platform.

“The left wants to defund the actual police,” Gaetz said in his first post on Parler. “I would just like to defund the thought police in Silicon Valley.”

Parler, which brands itself as the free speech alternative to Twitter, does restrict certain content, but the platform uses broadcast standards, which censors things like pornography but not political speech, according to Mediaite.

Conservatives first started joining Parler when the site was created in 2018. Parler co-founder and CEO John Matze said in 2018 that “big tech is not too big to topple, in fact, they are blinded by their size/power and are hurting themselves by ideologically targeting groups.”

Three Republicans in the House voted with Democrats on their police reform legislation bill Thursday, one day after Senate Democrats shut down Republicans’ police reform bill.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi worked with the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to come up with legislation on racial profiling and police brutality as protests continue across the country over the death of George Floyd. The bill passed with a vote of 236 to 181. The legislation was created by the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and focuses on racial profiling and police brutality as protests continue across the country for George Floyd.

The bill needed 60 votes in order for it to move forward to a debate. The vote was 55-45. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed cloture Monday on the Republican police reform legislation, setting up Wednesday’s vote.

Republicans needed seven or more Democrats to vote with them in order for the legislation to advance. Senate Republicans released their police reform legislation the previous Wednesday in response to the killing of Floyd.

Khan’s London: Another ‘Street Party’ Devolves Into Riot, Police Attacked Again

For the second night in a row an illegal “street party” in London devolved into a riot, with police officers being bombarded with glass bottles as they attempted to disperse a raucous gathering in Colville Gardens, Notting Hill.

Police deployed extra units across London on Thursday night, following up on an outburst of violence against officers on Wednesday, at an event Britain’s established news outlets characterised as a “party”.

Scenes again turned ugly in the Notting Hill neighbourhood in the early hours of Friday morning, with widely-distributed social media footage showing officers slowly advancing down a street to clear revellers. Officers were pelted with glass bottles and stones. Kensington & Chelsea police said in a statement in the early hours of Friday morning: “Objects have been thrown at officers dispersing the crowd. Violence will not be tolerated & units are responding appropriately. This gathering is illegal & we ask anyone in attendance to leave”.

The force added the crowd had dispersed by 0200. There were no reports of “serious injuries” at the Notting Hill incident, according to Sky News.

The night before London’s police officers were attacked after a block party descending into chaos. Dramatic footage from the Brixton riot — which received relatively low-key coverage from the BBC and other mainstream broadcasters — showed a mob including one individual apparently wielding a sword chasing police officers from the scene, clambering over police vehicles, and violently smashing them with improvised clubs.

At least 22 officers were injured during the riots — comparable to some of the higher figures for the thousands-strong Black Lives Matter demonstrations which have turned violent in recent weeks — with two confirmed as requiring hospital treatment.

Ken Marsh, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation which serves as something of a union for police officers in the capital, said there has been “an absolute volley of anger and hatred towards the police, and branded the violence “despicable”.

“My colleagues are human beings as well – and suddenly… they’re confronted by people who ultimately want to cause them grievous damage,” he said.

“You can’t prepare for that. It’s deplorable. We emphasise again that police officers are not punchbags. Colleagues should be going home to their families at the end of their shifts and not to hospital,” he insisted.

“My colleagues are faced with all sorts of trauma from these incidents.”

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is increasing police presence on the streets “in direct response to concerns expressed by our communities, many of whom were scared and shocked by the events taking place outside their homes.”

Microsoft is closing its physical retail stores

After 11 years, Microsoft is throwing in the towel on its physical retail stores and is refocusing its retail sales efforts around its online/digital store.

Microsoft is closing its physical retail stores, and instead will focus its retail efforts on digital sales. David Porter, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Store made the announcement on June 26 via a blog post on LinkedIn.

Microsoft will continue to employ retail salespeople but they will be focused on sales, training and support for consumers, small businesses and enterprise customers, Porter said. Microsoft already had been deploying its retail sales people remotely and in training roles during physical store closures resulting from the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Microsoft isn't going to close its flagship stores in London, New York, Sydney and Redmond, however. Porter said the company will "reimagine" them as new spaces, which will serve more as experience centers. He didn't offer further details about how customers will be able to visit these centers.

Microsoft originally announced its plans to open Microsoft-branded retail stores in February 2009. Microsoft's strategy was to locate most of these stores as physically close to Apple retail stores as possible.

Microsoft's physical stores offered users a place to see and try out Windows PCs, Windows Phones (until Microsoft discontinued them), Xbox consoles, and a variety of third party PCs and phones (including some Android phones). The flagship stores, like the New York City store which Microsoft finally opened in 2015, also offered demo spaces for products like the Microsoft HoloLens and community/educational spaces.

Microsoft's retail stores never took off anywhere near the way Apple's did, however. Microsoft tried a number of tactics to get more physical stores open quickly by doing things like opening holiday pop-up stores in 2012 as part of its Windows 8 push. But Microsoft always lagged far behind Apple in terms of number of total stores and foot traffic in those stores.

Microsoft said the closing of its physical locations will "result in a pre-tax charge of approximately $450 million, or $0.05 per share," which it will record in the current quarter that ends June 30.

I've asked if today's announcement will result in layoffs and when the stores will start closing. Unofficially, I'm hearing no layoffs. But no official word back so far.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson provided the official line: "All employees will have the opportunity to stay with Microsoft." (I've heard means they'll continue to work remotely as they have since March, and later, once Microsoft corporate facilities open, they'll still be working with Microsoft in various capacities.) And the store closings are basically already in effect, given all of Microsoft's retail shops closed because of the coronavirus and never re-opened.

Mexican Organized Crime Boss Identified by Breitbart Apprehended

MONTERREY, Nuevo Leon – State authorities arrested the leader of a violent organization waging a fierce turf war against a faction of Los Zetas for control of the local street-level drug market. The arrest comes months after Breitbart Texas revealed the identity of the crime boss and exposed the existence of independent gangs fighting cartels.

On Thursday early morning, detectives with the Nuevo Leon State Investigations Agency (AEI) arrested Jonathan Enrique “El Totoy” Gonzalez Rivera with three of his trusted gunmen in the El Barro neighborhood. Authorities seized three assault rifles and several packages of drugs.

AEI detectives worked with investigative support from the Monterrey Municipal Police to track El Totoy’s stash houses in the city’s hillside area. On Wednesday night, El Totoy called for a meeting with some of his associates moments before the raid. According to a prepared statement from the AEI, the three arrested men were linked to murder, drug distribution, and other violent crimes in Nuevo Leon.

Amazon has purchased the naming rights to Seattle's KeyArena, which is undergoing a major renovation in preparation for becoming home to an expansion NHL franchise and the WNBA's Storm.

But Amazon did not fight to win the bid in order to slap their name on the building. The new arena will be named Climate Pledge Arena.

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced on Instagram Thursday:

I'm excited to announce that Amazon has bought the naming rights to the historic Seattle arena previously known as KeyArena. Instead of calling it Amazon Arena, we're naming it Climate Pledge Arena as a regular reminder of the urgent need for climate action. It will be the first net zero carbon certified arena in the world, generate zero waste from operations and events, and use reclaimed rainwater in the ice system to create the greenest ice in the NHL. #ClimatePledge

The Climate Pledge is an initiative that calls on individuals and companies to adopt carbon-neutral practices and policies as laid out by the Paris Climate Change Agreement, which President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of last year.

The Washington Post (also owned by Bezos), reported that Climate Pledge Arena — set to open next year — will also include:

At least 75 percent of its food offerings sourced locally on a seasonal basis, with viable unused items donated to community food programs.

Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch obtained Secret Service records for the first five years of the Obama Admin showing Hunter Biden took 411 flights and visited 29 countries.

The Secret Service did not disclose, as requested by Judicial Watch, if Hunter Biden flew on Air Force One, Air Force Two or other government planes or whether other family members were in attendance

The records reveal Hunter Biden visited China 5 times.

The new documents also show that Hunter Biden never visited Ukraine prior to being hired by Burisma Holdings, a corrupt Ukrainian natural gas company.

Mobilized Maryland National Guard Soldiers Miss June Paychecks

Maryland National Guard troops activated for COVID-19 response and civil unrest went without June paychecks in a series of administrative failures, a Maryland National Guard spokesman said Thursday.

Guard leadership is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it, said Capt. Ben Hughes, a Maryland Guard spokesman. "There were some delays" in getting pay out on time, he added.

Hughes said the Guard is trying to determine "who might be missing out because of paperwork" involving order extensions and authorizations under state and federal guidelines.

There are no initial estimates of how many troops missed paychecks, Hughes said. But Steven Beynon, a sergeant with "A" Co., 1-175 Infantry Regiment, said he knows of 60 to 70 soldiers in his battalion who missed June 15 paychecks.

Guard members usually receive pay on the 1st and 15th of the month.

"No one in my company has been paid" for June 15, said Beynon, who is also a reporter for Stars & Stripes.

"It was shocking when we weren't paid," he said. "There wasn't any warning to it.

"The Army is all about taking care of soldiers," Beynon said. "This is not taking care of soldiers."

Guardsmen have left their civilian jobs in all 50 states to respond in unprecedented numbers to the nation's call to combat COVID-19 and to back up local law enforcement where needed. In early June, more than 120,000 of the total of about 450,000 National Guard members had been activated under state and federal authorizations, and on overseas deployments, according to the National Guard Bureau.

A spokeswoman for the bureau said it was unaware of pay problems in Maryland or other states. There was no immediate response from the bureau after the Maryland Guard confirmed the pay issue.

"I don't think anybody feels worse than the people in the chain of command of the Maryland National Guard," said John Goheen, a spokesman for the National Guard Association of the U.S.

"Everybody who has ever worn the uniform has probably experienced a pay problem," he added. "You hate to hear this.

"This has not been the easiest operation to administer," Goheen said, referring to orders for 30- or 31-day activations by states and Title 32 federal call-ups, and the various benefits and housing allowances that come with them.

In several roundtable discussions with defense reporters, state National Guard adjutant generals have consistently stressed the importance of timely pay for Guard members activated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Activists Urge US Dept of Agriculutre to Deny Deadly New Monsanto GMO-Herbicide Combo

The US is considering approving the product even as Monsanto juggles multiple multi-million dollar lawsuits from cancer patients over its deadly Roundup herbicide.

The United States Department of Agriculture is currently considering approving a new Monsanto corn genetically engineered to be used with five deadly herbicides. The vast majority of soy and corn grown in the United States is Monsanto’s patented Roundup Ready product. Roundup is the trade name of glyphosate, a chemical agent widely accepted as causing cancer in humans, including by the World Health Organization and the State of California. Monsanto’s new corn, however, is designed to be used not just with glyphosate, but also with dicamba, glufosinate, quizalofop, and 2,4-D.

The fact that the U.S. government may be expanding — not reducing — the amount of deadly chemicals used in food production is remarkable, considering that this week Monsanto’s parent company, Bayer, announced it was paying nearly $11 billion to settle a myriad of lawsuits from cancer patients over claims Roundup causes the deadly condition. Yet the government appears to still be protecting Monsanto; in January the Environmental Protection Agency insisted that glyphosate did not cause cancer, non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, or any other fatal condition. “This administration’s troubling allegiance to Bayer/Monsanto and the pesticide industry doesn’t change the trove of peer-reviewed research by leading scientists finding troubling links between glyphosate and cancer,” said Lori Ann Burd, director of environmental health for the Center for Biological Diversity.

The Vietnamese Red Cross estimates that up to one million people (over one percent of the population) are disabled or have health complications as a direct result of exposure to the chemical. “Vietnam has suffered tremendous consequences from the war, especially with regard to the lasting and devastating effects of toxic chemicals, including Agent Orange,” said Nguyen Phuong Tra, the country’s deputy foreign ministry spokesman.

Toronto doctor gets no professional penalty for sex assault on 16 year old after panel finds he was struggling to express gay identity

A Toronto doctor who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy was “struggling to express his identity” as a gay man, said a discipline panel in deciding to impose no punishment.

A discipline panel at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario ruled in a rare split decision last month that Dr. Farooq Khan should receive no penalty and not have to pay any costs for his discipline proceedings.

In doing so, the majority of the panel rejected a joint submission from both the college’s and Khan’s lawyers that said the doctor should receive a 12-month suspension and pay $20,550 in costs.

Khan had admitted before the panel to an allegation of “having been found guilty of an offence that is relevant to his suitability to practise” — related to the fact that he pleaded guilty in court in 2015 to a criminal charge of sexual assault.

He received an absolute discharge in court, meaning he didn’t get a criminal record as a result of the guilty plea and didn’t have to serve a sentence.

The charge related to a 2009 incident in a which a then-24-year-old Khan, who was a medical resident at the time, was sleeping over at the home of a 16-year-old boy identified as AB in the discipline panel’s decision.

The two were sharing a bunk bed, and one night Khan went down to the bottom bunk and fondled AB while masturbating, believing him to be asleep, according to the panel’s decision.

In the discipline proceedings, three of the panel’s five members — two doctors and one community member — rejected the proposed punishment of a 12-month suspension submitted by both sides.

The head of the Church of England waded into the heated statue debate during an interview this morning, where he was also asked if the 'way the western church portrays Jesus needs to be thought about again'.

He immediately replied: 'Yes of course it does, this sense that God was white... You go into churches (around the world) and you don't see a white Jesus.

'You see a black Jesus, a Chinese Jesus, a Middle Eastern Jesus - which is of course the most accurate - you see a Fijian Jesus.'

Rev Welby stressed his view was not to 'throw out' the past but instead offer a rounded picture of the 'universality' of Christ.

Speaking this morning in a wide-ranging interview Rev Welby told BBC's Today: 'Jesus is portrayed in as many ways as there are cultures languages and understandings.

'And I don't think that throwing out everything we've got in the past is the way to do it but I do think saying "that's not the Jesus who exists, that's not who we worship", it is a reminder of the universality of the God who became fully human.'

26 Trinitario gang members charged in Rikers Island stabbings, slashings and other violence

NEW YORK – Twenty-six alleged Trinitario gang members were charged Thursday in Bronx District court following an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, and the New York City Department of Correction’s Correction Intelligence Bureau, with assistance from the New York City Department of Investigation. According to the investigation, current or former Rikers Island inmates carried out a total of 14 violent acts in the jail between September 2015 and July 2019. Half of those incidents were against rival gang members, and half against fellow Trinitarios who broke rules of the gang and who were not in good standing. Out of the 14 incidents, 12 were slashings and stabbings. The defendants conspired through various forms of communication, including phone calls and letters, and by using coded language.

"Transnational criminal organizations will operate without boundaries, as in this case with alleged connections to brutal violence, slashings and stabbings while incarcerated," said Peter C. Fitzhugh, special agent in charge of HSI New York. "HSI New York will continue to pursue and dismantle transnational gangs like the Trinitarios, wherever they operate. It is with the tremendous collaboration with the Bronx District Attorney's Office, NYC DOC and DOI that this investigation took down more than two dozen members of a gang that exists only to brutalize and endanger our communities."

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said, "During their time in Rikers Island, these defendants allegedly conspired and engaged in numerous slashings and stabbings that caused grievous wounds. They allegedly carried out these attacks in order to preserve and protect the power of the Trinitario gang, meting out punishment to their own members as well as rivals. We will not tolerate such brutality against incarcerated individuals and will hold people accountable even after they have left jail. We will continue to attack the pipeline of violence from Rikers Island to the streets."

DOC Commissioner Cynthia Brann said, "We will not tolerate violence in City jails, and are doing everything possible to bring those responsible to justice. The safety and security of the people who live and work in our facilities is our top priority. Our Correction Intelligence Bureau works tirelessly to increase safety in city jails, and we are proud of their hard work in this case, which involved collaboration with fellow law enforcement partners citywide. Gang activity drives a disproportionate amount of violence on city streets and amongst those in custody, and because of the indictments announced today both communities are safer."

Democrats Friday attacked the Trump administration for asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obamacare, an action that could throw 23 million Americans off their health plans amid the coronavirus pandemic and high unemployment.

“If Donald Trump has his way, complications from COVID-19 could become a new preexisting condition,” presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said in prepared remarks Thursday ahead of the filing. “Some survivors will experience lasting health impacts — like lung scarring and heart damage.

“And if Donald Trump prevails in court, insurers would be allowed to strip away coverage or jack up premiums — simply because of their battle with the coronavirus.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed Biden, adding there’s “no legal justification and no moral excuse for the Trump administration’s disastrous efforts to take away Americans’ healthcare.”

The pandemic has killed more than 124,000 Americans since mid-March.

The administration late Thursday argued in a brief the decade-old Affordable Care Act needs to be struck down because its core provision – the individual mandate – is unconstitutional, and since the penalties were removed, the law cannot be constitutional because of Congress’ taxing power, the reason it was upheld previously.

The brief was filed in conjunction with a suit brought by a coalition of 18 Republican state attorneys general led by Texas.

President Trump made overturning Obamacare a cornerstone pledge of his 2016 campaign, but in the more than three years he has been in office, Republicans have failed to come up with a replacement plan.

The filing came as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported 487,000 Americans signed up for healthcare coverage after the pandemic forced the nation into economic lockdown, sending millions of Americans to unemployment lines.

The White House denied dismantling the ACA would worsen the pandemic. Spokesman Judd Deere called the law a failure in a statement emailed to the Washington Post and said Americans “deserve for Congress to work on a bipartisan basis with the president to provide quality, affordable care.”

'Society of Snitches': Northam Asks Virginians to Report Churches, Gun Ranges That Violate COVID Restrictions

The Virginia Department of Health under Gov. Ralph Northam (D-Va.) is encouraging Virginians to file an anonymous report to snitch on various establishments for violating the governor’s restrictions to fight the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic that came from China. State Sen. Mark Obenshain (R) pondered whether Northam is trying to turn Virginia into a “society of … snitches.”

“[The governor of Virginia] is now trying to turn us into a society of informers and snitches?” Obenshain asked. “The Governor and his Health Secretary, through the VA Dept. of Health is now asking for people to make anonymous complaints to the Dept. for violations of the Gov. Northam’s mask order.”

“And in the submission form, there’s a drop down menu that lists gun ranges, churches retail businesses and a few other types of organizations as culprits,” the Republican added.

“So let me get this straight. Gov. Northam is asking private citizens to tattle on their fellow citizens regarding his mask order and encouraging complaints to be submitted specifically as to churches and gun ranges. And these complaints can be made anonymously. There is nothing to prevent businesses from snitching on competitors, or to prevent the outright fabrication of reports,” Obenshain warned.

“This is sure to work to the detriment of small businesses who are struggling under the weight of the coronavirus shutdown AND stifling laws Democrats passed that go into effect July 1,” he added.

Yet the situation gets even worse. Obenshain noted that Northam’s Department of Health is encouraging this snitching “while the Governor equivocates and prevaricates when it comes to its enforcement in connection with protests, demonstrations and riots – as long as participants are his allies.”

The “society of snitches” form, entitled “Online Complaint Report for Violations of Executive Order 63 (Face Coverings) and Executive Order 65 (Phase Two Easing of Certain Temporary Restrictions)” and first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, indeed includes a drop-down menu listing eight different types of establishments, including “Indoor Gun Range” and “Religious Service” as options.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sounded the alarm on Thursday about the possibility of Iran acquiring Chinese and Russian jets if the current arms embargo imposed by the UN security council is not renewed in October.

Speaking via a video conference organised by the German Marshall Fund think tank, Mr Pompeo warned the Europeans about the prospect of the embargo expiring in less than four months.

“In October of this year, the arms embargo will expire. That can’t happen, or the Iranians will be permitted to buy weapons systems," he said.

"They’ll become one of the largest sellers of weapons systems around the world. They’ll be able to buy Chinese jets and Russian jets.

“I can’t imagine that a citizen of Slovenia or Germany or Greece or any other European country would conclude that it was wise to allow the Iranians to have that capability…the United States is going to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Friday a plan to restrict visas to current and former Chinese Communist Party officials who “undermined” Hong Kong’s autonomy. Additionally, Pompeo said the families of such officials could also be subject to the punishment.

“The CCP has stepped up efforts to undermine Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy by announcing Beijing’s authority to ‘supervise’ Hong Kong’s governance, accusing at least one member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council of misconduct, and moving to unilaterally and arbitrarily impose national security legislation on Hong Kong,” Pompeo said in his remarks.

Pompeo’s announcement comes as Beijing inches closer to passing a national security law handing over significant control to the Chinese Communist Party. However, the move would be a violation of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, Pompeo argued, under which the British government gave Beijing back control over Hong Kong, but promised to allow its autonomy.

Pompeo added, “Beijing’s continued actions undermine its commitments and obligations in the Sino-British Joint Declaration to respect Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy. At the same time, Beijing continues to undermine human rights and fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong by putting pressure on local authorities to arrest pro-democracy activists and disqualify pro-democracy electoral candidates.”

“The United States calls on China to honor its commitments and obligations in the Sino-British Joint Declaration – namely that Hong Kong will ‘enjoy a high degree of autonomy’ and that human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, will be protected by law and respected by governing authorities in Hong Kong,” Pompeo said.

“Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and the full implementation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, as well as respect for human rights, are of fundamental importance. The United States will continue to review its authorities to respond to these concerns.”

U.S. District Court Judge Gary Sharpe issued a preliminary injunction on June 26 saying that de Blasio and Cuomo (as well as Attorney General Letitia James) exceeded their authority by putting restrictions on people of faith while simultaneously condoning the protests.

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler Friday bolstered the Trump administration’s bid to defund NPR after an NPR reporter editorialized against him and said it was “unsettling” to interview President Trump’s environment chief. “It reinforces in my mind that NPR should not be publicly financed. It’s just ridiculous,” Wheeler said after listening to how his 45-minute interview with Nora Saks of Montana Public Radio on Superfund cleanup efforts turned into an attack on the agency. “So many reporters have blurred the line between reporting and editorializing. And she was editorializing and I thought it was supposed to be an actual news piece. I didn’t realize it was just an editorial,” he said of her podcast, Richest Hill Episode 08: The Art Of The Superfund Deal. During the 48-minute podcast she criticized the “reign” of Trump and questioned agendas of his appointees. Wheeler, for example, is often referred to in media reports as a former coal industry lobbyist, but his prior work in Washington on environmental issues his first job was as director of EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics is typically ignored.

After airing some of Wheeler’s quotes, Saks said, “Having a chance to speak directly with Administrator Wheeler was unsettling. He comes off as a decent enough guy who can’t wait to visit Glacier National Park and isn’t out to get the planet. His neighborly Midwestern demeanor temporarily distracted me from the fact that he’s now in charge of regulating the polluting industries he’s staunchly defended.” Wheeler was dumbfounded. “She interviewed me for 45 minutes, and she ran 12 minutes of the interview, apparently. And she said I made ‘unsubstantiated claims,’ but she didn’t say what the claims were. She said that it was ‘unsettling’ to talk to me. I don’t care if she was unsettled to talk to me or not. It was unsettling to talk to an NPR reporter,” said Wheeler. He also criticized the reporter for not telling her audience that a critic she included was a former EPA contractor dumped by the agency. “Wouldn’t you think if you were a real journalist, wouldn’t you have to disclose the fact that this person she’s interviewing has a bone to pick against the EPA for no longer being hired,” he said. Wheeler said that it’s time to again move to take away public funding for the outlets, which have strong support in liberal media and political worlds. “They certainly are a sacred cow that needs to be slaughtered,” said Wheeler.

Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch obtained Secret Service records for the first five years of the Obama Admin showing Hunter Biden took 411 flights and visited 29 countries.

The Secret Service did not disclose, as requested by Judicial Watch, if Hunter Biden flew on Air Force One, Air Force Two or other government planes or whether other family members were in attendance.

The records reveal Hunter Biden visited China 5 times.

Facebook will change its policies to ban “hate speech” in advertisements on the platform, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced, after activists brigaded a number of major corporations to pull their ads from the platform.

“I am committed to making sure Facebook remains a place where people can use their voice to discuss important issues,” Zuckerberg said on Friday. “But I also stand against hate or anything that incites violences or suppresses voting, and we’re committed to removing that content too, no matter where it comes from.”

This will include ads critical of “immigrants, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers” CNBC reported Zuckerberg as saying.

US Navy Warns Sailors Prostitutes in Bahrain ‘Collecting Intel on You’

A US Navy training video is warning sailors bound for the Persian Gulf nation of Bahrain to beware the island’s many sex workers, as they will attempt to sell any information they can get about Navy personnel and their operations.

Some 8,000 US Navy personnel are stationed in the Bahraini capital of Manama, where the US Fifth Fleet’s headquarters are located. According to a Navy training video given to newly arrived servicemembers, one of the many dangers they face is the island’s sex trade, where prostitutes will reportedly fleece their customers for valuable information and then sell it to third parties.

“They’re collecting intel on you,” Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) Special Agent Joe Minucci warns new arrivals in the video, which was posted on the Pentagon’s Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) website in late May.

“They want to know about what your job is, what you do, what access you have, ship movements, the type of ship that comes in. Although they don’t really have a need for that information, they sell that information, and that’s how they make more money in order to get themselves out of the situation they’re in.”

“The broader intelligence community is aware that foreign adversaries often use prostitution as a conduit to solicit sensitive information from service members,” NCIS spokesperson Jeff Houston told the Navy Times for a Thursday story. However, the outlet noted NCIS provided no further specifics about the video.

In the video, Minucci says that US personnel are particularly desirable targets because they’re known to get steady paychecks and because they won’t risk getting in trouble by assaulting or turning in the women whose services they solicit.

“They also know you’re going to rotate out every 12 to 24 months,” Minucci noted. “Because of that, there’s going to be a new face, or somebody new to take your place, so business will always be there.”

A June 16 story on Military Times documented how a US Navy investigation found that a sailor, Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Jihad H. Littlejohn, worked with a “mamasan” pimp named Lin Raiwest in 2017 to fly several women into Bahrain from Thailand and turn his apartment into the base for a sex trafficking ring.

However, after the ring was busted, it was revealed that not only was Raiwest part of a much larger web of sex trafficking, she was also “a longtime confidential NCIS informant, plying her illicit trade, reporting sailor misconduct and collecting cash rewards in the process,” according to Military Times. She reportedly went by the code name MEBJ-1580.

June 26 (UPI) — American Airlines said Friday it will start filling its flight to capacity starting July 1 but will allow passengers to move to open seats if they are available at no extra cost.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, American had blocked off 50 percent of the middle seats in the main cabin. Other airlines, like Delta Air Lines, Jet Blue and Southwest Airlines, have been blocking all middle seats.

“As more people continue to travel, customers may notice that flights are booked to capacity starting July 1,” American said in a statement. “American will continue to notify customers and allow them to move to more open flights when available, all without incurring any cost. This is in addition to the airline’s current travel waivers.

“If space is available once boarding is complete — taking into consideration any aircraft weight or balance restrictions — customers may move to another seat within their ticketed cabin subject to availability.

Ross Feinstein, an American spokesman, said the airline has had its busiest days since April while it has added intensified cleaning and making face masks mandatory for passengers and crew.

“We believe it is safe to go back to our normal capacity,” Feinstein said.

American follows United and Spirit airlines, which are already booking to capacity.

Here is Why Washington, D.C. Isn't a State.

With Washington, D.C.’s mayor calling for a November vote on statehood, it raises the question, why wasn’t the nation’s capital made a state in the first place?

First, it’s worth remembering that Washington, D.C. was not always the capital. George Washington first took office in New York City, and then the capital was moved to Philadelphia, where it remained for a decade. Washington, D.C. was founded as the capital in 1790 as a result of a compromise between Alexander Hamilton and northern states, and Thomas Jefferson and southern states. Hamilton’s economic policies consolidated power in the bankers and financiers who primarily lived in the North, so the compromise moved the capital physically more South, to appease Jefferson and southern leaders who feared northern control of the nation.

But the lack of statehood for the capital is enshrined in the Constitution. Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17 of the document reads, “The Congress shall have Power To …exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States.”

James Madison outlined the reasoning behind this provision in Federalist 43, calling the arrangement an “indispensable necessity.” He wrote, “The indispensable necessity of complete authority at the seat of government, carries its own evidence with it… Without it, not only the public authority might be insulted and its proceedings interrupted with impunity; but a dependence of the members of the general government on the State comprehending the seat of the government, for protection in the exercise of their duty, might bring on the national councils an imputation of awe or influence, equally dishonorable to the government and dissatisfactory to the other members of the Confederacy.”

In other words, the founders worried that if the capital were to be a state, the members of the government would be unduly beholden to it. Madison envisioned that voting members of a D.C. state would be able to ‘insult’ or ‘interrupt’ the proceedings of government to get their way, simply by virtue of physical proximity to the halls of power.

When the capital was officially moved to D.C., residents lost voting representation in Congress and the Electoral College, as well as a say in Constitutional Amendments and the right to home rule. Members of the district won a victory in 1961 with the passage of the 23rd amendment to the Constitution, which granted them votes in the electoral college.

To this day, D.C. does not have voting representation in Congress, and the federal government maintains jurisdiction over the city. For proponents of D.C. statehood like Mayor Muriel Bowser, there is still a long way to go.

Trump Admin Prepares Revamp of Suicide Crisis Hotline

FCC hopes new three-digit number will curb suicide crisis

Administration leaders are moving to curb the nation's exploding suicide crisis through a new, three-digit number to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai expects to designate 988 as a special code to connect people quickly and easily to the lifeline, he told the Washington Free Beacon in an interview—a response to the two-decade surge in suicide deaths that Pai called "stunning" and "epidemic."

The change will be voted on by the full FCC at its July 16 open meeting and is expected to pass unanimously, one FCC staffer told the Free Beacon. The new code will easily direct callers to the 10-digit line currently operated by a network of publicly funded crisis centers that provide immediate counseling, mental health referrals, and emergency services to people contemplating suicide.

A suicide hotline short code, under consideration for two years, has been widely supported by suicide experts—and has grown increasingly salient as the coronavirus crisis has driven up calls for help. At the same time, those same experts have cautioned that expanded accessibility of the already overtaxed crisis hotline must be paired with more funding—Dr. Bart Andrews, a board member at the American Association of Suicidology, told the Free Beacon that current funding levels are "completely insufficient to meet the need that 988 will create."

That makes Pai and allies' move a much-needed, but likely insufficient, first step in slowing the rise of America's suicide crisis. It also puts the ball in Congress's court to ensure that increased demand for the suicide hotline is met with appropriate resources.

Earlier this week, Pai presented draft rules to his colleagues on the commission that proposed designating 988 as a short code that would redirect callers to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline. If passed, the rules would oblige all service providers to forward calls to 988 no later than July 16, 2022.

The proposed changes are an implementation of the mandate of the National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act of 2018, which instructed the FCC to investigate the feasibility of a three-digit code. But they are also, Pai told the Free Beacon, a response to the surge in suicides nationwide.

"Suicide in the United States has reached levels not seen since World War II, epidemic levels especially among vulnerable populations like veterans," Pai said. "One of the thoughts that has percolated over recent years in Washington is that the designation of a three-digit number could be one way of better connecting those who are struggling with those who could help."

We have seen Sharia patrols in Germany, Britain, and even New York City, where the Muslim Community Patrol (MCP) is decked out in uniforms that strong resemble New York Police Department uniforms, and drives cars carefully designed to look like NYPD cars, to enforce “fundamentals of the Sharia.”

Muslim leader Siraj Wahhaj explained what that meant: “The mosques need protection and the MCP cars can help stop people who were not following the rules and regulations of the sharia, doing what they’re not supposed to be doing, but still doing it.” According to a Muslim involved with the MCP, this would involve stopping “Muslim women being out after dark, Muslim men hanging out in the corners doing dope, Muslims drinking liquor,” and enforcing, “basically, the fundamentals of the Sharia.”

If such a community patrol is launched in Minneapolis, it is likely to focus on the same things, but not do anything about the fact that the 5th Congressional District in Minneapolis, Rep. Ilhan Omar’s district, is the jihad terror recruitment capital of the United States. Stopping young Muslims from engaging in jihad activity is unlikely to be a high priority for a group that is dedicated to enforcing Sharia, since Sharia calls upon Muslims to wage war against and subjugate unbelievers.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Gov. Gavin Newsom said that Imperial County in Southern California – which has seen a positivity rate of 23% over the last 14 days — is being told to pull back on reopening and reinstate the stay-at-home order.

Dr. Sonia Angell, the state health director, said that the high positivity rate likely means there’s many undetected cases in the area.

Imperial County, with a population of 175,000 people on the state’s border with Mexico, has been the slowest in the state to reopen amid continued high positivity rates.

By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the UN General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

Rarely acknowledged, (“legal”) drug trafficking was initiated by the British Empire. There is continuity. The colonial label has been scrapped. Today the (“illicit”) drug trade is a multibillion dollar operation.

The two main hubs of production today are:

Afghanistan which produces approximately 90% of the World supply of opium (transformed into heroin and opioid related products). There was a successful drug eradication programme in 2000-2001 which was initiated (with UN support). prior to the US-NATO led invasion in October 2001. Since the invasion and military occupation, according to UNODC, the production of opium has increased 50 fold, reaching 9000 metric tons in 2017.

The Andean region of South America (Colombia, Peru, Bolivia) which produces cocaine. Colombia is a US supported narco-state.

The Drug Economy is an integral part of Empire Building. Drug trafficking is protected by the US military and intelligence apparatus.

(This will be the object of several Global Research articles which will be published in the next few days in support of the June 26, 2020 UN sponsored “global observance to raise awareness”).

The Role of the British Empire

Historically, drug trafficking was an integral part of British colonialism. It was “legal”.

Opium produced in Bengal by the British East India Company (BEIC) was shipped to China’s Southern port of Canton.

The state-sponsored export of opium from British India to China was arguably the largest and most enduring drug operation in history. At its peak in the mid-19th century it accounted for roughly 15% of total colonial revenue in India and 31% of India’s exports. To supply this trade the East India Company (EIC) – and later the British Government – developed a highly regulated cultivation system in which over one million farmers a year were under contract to grow opium poppies. …

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning the public about potential fraud schemes related to antibody tests for COVID-19.

Scammers are marketing fraudulent and/or unapproved COVID-19 antibody tests, potentially providing false results. In addition, fraudsters are seeking to obtain individuals’ personal information (names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, etc.) and personal health information, including Medicare and/or private health insurance information, which can be used in future medical insurance or identity theft schemes.

In response to the vast number of COVID-19 cases, and in an effort to return to a normal economy as soon as possible, researchers have been encouraged to devise testing methods that can be quickly and easily deployed to test large numbers of individuals for COVID-19 antibodies. However, not all COVID-19 antibody tests have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and their efficacy has not been determined.

The FBI warns the public to be aware of the following potential indicators of fraudulent activity:

Claims of FDA approval for antibody testing that cannot be verified

Advertisements for antibody testing through social media platforms, email, telephone calls, online, or from unsolicited/unknown sources

Marketers offering “free” COVID-19 antibody tests or providing incentives for undergoing testing

Individuals contacting you in person, phone, or email to tell you the government or government officials require you to take a COVID-19 antibody test

Practitioners offering to perform antibody tests for cash

The FBI recommends:

Checking the FDA’s website (fda.gov) for an updated list of approved antibody tests and testing companies

Consulting your primary care physician before undergoing any at-home antibody tests

Using a known laboratory approved by your health insurance company to provide the antibody testing

Not sharing your personal or health information to anyone other than known and trusted medical professionals

Checking your medical bills and insurance explanation of benefits (EOBs) for any suspicious claims and promptly reporting any errors to your health insurance provider

Following guidance and recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other trusted medical professionals

If you believe you have been the victim of a COVID-19 fraud, immediately report it to National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at (866) 720-5721 or justice.gov/disastercomplaintform, or the FBI (ic3.gov, tips.fbi.gov, or 1-800-CALL-FBI).

OTTAWA — Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton insists the U.S. criminal charges against Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou are not politically motivated — and he says he’d be happy to back up the assertion under oath before a Canadian judge.

Texas Democrats have sought for months to expand the definition of “disability” to include those with concerns about the potential health implications of in-person voting during a pandemic.

The issue sparked months of court fights and prompted the state party's request that the Supreme Court pause the appeals court ruling — which the justices denied Friday.

“We are disappointed that the Supreme Court did not weigh in now and provide needed relief and clarity for voters ahead of the primary runoff," Texas Democratic Party Chairperson Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement.

In their stay request, the Texas Democrats told the justices that by limiting the right to cast mail-in ballots to those 65 and older, the Texas rules violate the 26th Amendment’s bar on abridging the right to vote based on age.

The group made the same argument in a formal petition for appeal, which is unlikely to be resolved ahead of the state's July 14 primary vote but could be addressed before Election Day in November.

NC LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR PLANS TO SUE COOPER

Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, a Republican, said Thursday he plans to file a lawsuit against Cooper over executive orders related to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Today, I notified Governor Cooper that, as a member of the Council of State, I will be suing his administration for violating the Emergency Management Act,” Forest said in a post on Facebook. “The governor has repeatedly ignored the law, enacting mandates that selectively target the businesses and citizens of North Carolina without concurrence from a majority of the Council of State.”

Europe’s meat industry is a coronavirus hot spot

Tönnies, one of Germany’s largest meat processing companies, has been taking flak since news broke that a large number of its laborers had contracted the coronavirus. So far, over 1,500 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19. The outbreak was possible because many of the foreign laborers working for the company are put up in crammed living quarters. To make matters worse, Tönnies has not ensured social distancing is enforced at the workplace.

Outbreaks like these, however, are not confined to German meat processing plants. In a recent report, the European Federation of Trade Unions in the Food, Agriculture and Tourism sectors (EFFAT) warned that “appalling working, employment and housing conditions” affect “thousands of meat workers in many countries across Europe.”

NY POST – House Democrats riled by President Trump’s handling of anti-police brutality protests voted Friday to make Washington, DC, the 51st state.

The bill passed 232-180 along party lines. One Democrat and the only Libertarian joined all Republicans in opposition. It’s the first time either chamber of Congress has approved DC statehood.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) recently said he won’t hold a vote, effectively killing the bill. Trump told The Post last month that DC will “never” be a state because Republicans aren’t “stupid” enough to add guaranteed Democratic seats.

China watches big cash transactions to stem capital flight

BEIJING – China will start tracking large-sum cash transactions to help stem capital outflows as the trade war with the U.S. continues to erode its dollar holdings.

Starting in July, banks in Hebei Province will have to record serial numbers for any personal cash transactions of 100,000 yuan ($14,100) or more and report them to the People's Bank of China. Zhejiang Province and the city of Shenzhen will follow in October with 300,000 yuan and 200,000 yuan thresholds. The threshold for business accounts will be set at 500,000 yuan across all three areas. The government has been cracking down on individuals trying to smuggle yuan out of the mainland to acquire Hong Kong or U.S. dollars. Beijing hopes to put in place a complete tracking regime that will help prevent capital outflows. As the Sino-American trade war drags on, China is eager to hang on to its limited supply of dollars. Although China's foreign reserves exceed $3 trillion, the figure is expected to be much less when accounting for the surge in dollar-denominated debt, as well as for U.S. government bonds and other assets that can be cashed out quickly. The regulations, which could go national as early as 2022, are billed as a means of curbing illegal cash transactions. Even as China increasingly goes digital for smaller transactions, like everyday shopping, cash has become a more popular option for large-scale transactions, according to the central bank.

China plans to launch the digital yuan, which PBOC Gov. Yi Gang frames as an alternative to cash, by the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Lacking the full anonymity of cash, it is expected to give the government a clearer picture of how money moves. Taken together with stepped-up monitoring of cash transactions, Chinese authorities could gain a complete view of the flow of money. The new rules could also combat the smuggling of large amounts of yuan off the mainland by individuals. In 2019, two people were detained at a Hebei airport for trying to take 1 million yuan in cash to Taiwan – far above the legal limit of 20,000 yuan per person.

Capital outflows lead to the dumping of the yuan, weakening the Chinese currency and squeezing China's foreign currency reserves. China's capital outflows through bank transfers and legitimate channels totaled $30.7 billion in the January-March quarter. The figure is expected to be larger when accounting for cash smuggled out of the country. China had also logged a current-account deficit for the quarter, while the reference rate for the yuan hit its weakest point in more than 12 years this May. Restricting cash transactions could prevent the runs that have plagued Chinese regional banks. Just this month, customers rushed to withdraw money from Bank of Baoding in Hebei Province in response to rumors about its troubles.

The new reporting thresholds apply not only to in-person transactions, but also to deposits and withdrawals made at ATMs, including ones broken up into multiple smaller amounts over short periods. Account holders will have to make reservations to make large-sum transactions in person, with banks then reporting them to the authorities. Suspiciously large or frequent transactions will be flagged. Certain industries and account holders will be especially closely monitored in each of the three areas, such as those purchasing condominiums in Hebei Province.

In Zhejiang Province, which is home to numerous private-sector companies, authorities will closely monitor transactions involving wholesalers, retailers, property developers, construction companies and automakers. Companies in these fields will be urged to conduct large transactions through bank transfers or other cashless means. Shenzhen will focus on startup founders, given the number of emerging businesses there, to ensure that their personal funds and corporate funds are clearly delineated. It will also work with banks in Hong Kong against the smuggling of cash to the city to be exchanged for U.S. or Hong Kong dollars.

'Morning Joe' Speculates Trump May Quit Before He Gets Fired

President Donald Trump hates being thought of as a loser, but maybe he wouldn’t mind being known as a quitter.

That’s what “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough wondered on Friday in light of the president’s recent racially charged rallies and his administration’s latest attempt to overturn the Affordable Care Act.

It left Scarborough wondering: “Does this guy want to be elected president of the United States? Does he really want to be there?”

Scarborough pointed out that Trump had a better instinct for when to keep his mouth shut in 2016 when he won the White House, but “he’s not acting that way now” as he seeks a second term.

He added that the president is not only “acting like he doesn’t want to get re-elected, he’s acting like he really wants to lose badly and take the Republican Party down with him.”

Scarborough, who Trump earlier this year sought to smear with a baseless conspiracy theory, conceded his “far-fetched” theory didn’t make conventional sense, but it was the only way to explain the president’s current campaign efforts.

“You look at every single move he’s making,” Scarborough said. “And it keeps happening every day.”

The TV host added, “This looks like a deliberate attempt to drive his campaign into the ground every day. He knows what he’s doing is going to lower the poll numbers, and they are. They are collapsing every day.”

A series of polls released Thursday contained especially bad news for Trump, showing him running behind Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, in several of the most politically competitive states.

Scarborough’s co-host and wife, Mika Brzenzinski, amplified his hot take.

“He doesn’t want four more years,” she said. “That’s clear. You can tell by his behavior. His attitude towards the health of the American people, he doesn’t want to be there.”

Brzezinski also noted that Trump doesn’t like to lose, which led Scarborough to suggest that the president might consider pulling out of the race before the election ― especially if it looks like Biden will win big.

“This is not a guy who is acting like he expects to be around on January 21st, 2021, in the White House. And he’s acting like he’s setting everything on fire before he leaves,” Scarborough said.

He added, “He’s known when to leave the stage before. … I would not be surprised if he left the stage again.”

A little later, he riffed on what Trump might say to the American people in his resignation speech ― “You don’t deserve me” was one key phrase.

Scarborough then suggested Trump would rather leave the presidency and be remembered for scoring one of the biggest political upsets of all time then an incumbent who suffered an especially humiliating loss.

However, he took great pains to remind viewers that it was just a theory and wasn’t based on any insider knowledge.

“He’s known when to leave the stage before — again, I’m the only one saying this — I would not be surprised if he left the stage again,” Scarborough said, reiterating, “And again, I’m the only person saying it. Don’t think it’ll happen, but it’s a possibility.”

USDA to run ‘Plum Island’ Kansas

In a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), we learn that the USDA will run the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), the $1.25 billion biosafety level-4 laboratory in Manhattan, Kansas.

USDA will assume responsibility for all operational planning and eventual operation of the facility. DHS’ efforts are on schedule and on budget to complete construction in December 2020 and to complete commissioning in May 2021, when ownership of NBAF will be formally transferred to USDA.

“It’s a real honor for USDA to have the operational stewardship of NBAF. We look forward to working with Members of Congress, our private sector partners, and our academic partners in this area as we take over operations. USDA will make this a facility that America can be proud of,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.

Plum Island’s move to Kansas: ‘This research facility is an accident waiting to happen’

“NBAF will be the first facility in the United States with maximum biocontainment, BSL-4 labs, where we can develop vaccines and diagnostics for high-consequence animal diseases – including those that can also affect human health,” Ibach said. “These expanded capabilities will enable us to be more dynamic and flexible in responding to disease threats—wherever they come from, whatever they look like.”

How about if we push requiring onsite oximeters when masks are required?

All places mandating wearing masks should be required to provide an easily accessible oximeter station that allows any person to check their blood oxygen level and heart rate. Since mask wearing reduces oxygen to the body and brain and increases heart rate by constricting airflow, on-site oximeters should be mandated by OSHA as this is clearly a safety issue.

A Terrorist’s Ties to a Leading Black Lives Matter Group

Some conservatives have begun speculating the unrest in American cities—even as late as Monday night in Washington, DC, as “protestors” unsuccessfully worked to tear down a statue of Andrew Jackson and set up an autonomous zone across the street from the White House—may in part be an attempt to affect the upcoming presidential election, with the chaos and violence intended to make it as difficult as possible for Donald Trump to win a second term.

Rosenberg, who started out as a member of the 1960s revolutionary group Weather Underground, graduated into even more violent, and arguably successful, forms of terrorism in the 1970s and 1980s—including bombings at an FBI field office in Staten Island, the Navy Yard Officers’ Club in Washington, DC, and even the U.S. Capitol building, where she damaged a representation of the greatest of the Democrat defenders of slavery, John C. Calhoun. She currently serves as Human and Prisoner Rights Advocate and a Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Thousand Currents.

As my colleague Robert Stilson explains here, BLM Global Network Foundation has been a fiscally sponsored project of Thousand Currents, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, since 2016. That means the BLM group, which runs the BlackLivesMatter.com website, does not have its own IRS tax-exempt status but is operating as a “project” of an organization that does. In the case of 501(c)(3) fiscally sponsored projects, this allows tax-deductible donations to be made to the project.

New bill would protect Netanyahu from former spokespeople court testimony

Spokespeople for politicians will not be able to testify against them, according to a new bill submitted this week by Likud MK Shlomo Karhi.

The bill would institute client privilege for spokespeople, just like there is with lawyers and psychologists who cannot testify against their former clients.

For instance, state’s witness Nir Hefetz would not be able to testify against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. But Hefetz could be grandfathered into the law, which is unlikely to be able to be applied retroactively.

The Likud is expected to fast-track the bill. It was unclear whether the bill would apply to recent cases of spokespeople who testified against politicians who were accused of using drugs, sexual harassment and rape.

The proposed legislation is another in a series of bills submitted by Likud MKs that have been aimed at helping Netanyahu with his criminal cases.

For instance, the Likud MKs have sponsored the French Law, which would prevent a prime minister from being probed, a bill preventing taped conversations from being used as evidence and the recommendations bill, which tried to prevent police from publishing their recommendations. None of the bills passed.

In late April Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shocked the region in declaring he expects that by middle of summer Israel would move to annex broad swathes of the West Bank, including the Jordan Valley, as part of Trump's "deal of the century" peace plan. The date consistently referenced in Israeli media reports is July 1st.

“President Trump pledged to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Jewish communities there and in the Jordan Valley,” Netanyahu said. And just this week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded to an urgent United Nations appeal not to go through with it ahead of the July 1 target date by saying the matter is solely up to Israel to decide.

This as senior Trump aides reportedly met this week to hash out the matter of whether the administration should give the final "green light" - given it appears Tel Aviv is awaiting the moment of unambiguous backing before annexation. This is because it is sure to spark conflict on the ground. Hamas on Thursday said that annexation will be "a declaration of war".

Hamas military spokesperson Abu Obeida vowed that Israel will "bitterly regret" such a provocative decision and act of aggressive, Fox News reports. He called it a "declaration of war against the Palestinian people" in a video message directed both at Israel and for supporters. He vowed his Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades will fight as a "loyal guard in defending the Palestinian people and their lands and holy sites."

Previously senior Hamas officials also said any hope for political dialogue or settlement would be forever destroyed. “Palestinians would not accept these plans at all. They are going to resist these plans by all means available. Gaza is not excluded from this,” another official, Basem Naim, said.

Already the planned annexation has resulted in large protests this week in West Bank cities and towns.

It also appears the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are making ready: “The upcoming events can develop into fighting in Gaza,” IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi said as Israel braces for a possible new intifada. The IDF has essentially said 'we're ready to go'.

California Legislature Votes to Allow Discrimination by Race, Gender, National Origin

This week, the legislature in California voted to remove the constitutional prohibition on “discriminating against or granting preferential treatment to persons on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, and public contracting.” That’s right, California just voted to allow racial and gender discrimination in all its public activities. The bill will move to the ballot in November for a popular vote.

The measure, ACA5, repeals section 31 of Article 1 of the California Constitution. The strikethrough language below is what’s being removed—and this is a really bad look:

(a) The State shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

(b) This section shall apply only to action taken after the section’s effective date.

(c) Nothing in this section shall be interpreted as prohibiting bona fide qualifications based on sex which are reasonably necessary to the normal operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

(d) Nothing in this section shall be interpreted as invalidating any court order or consent decree which is in force as of the effective date of this section.

(e) Nothing in this section shall be interpreted as prohibiting action which must be taken to establish or maintain eligibility for any federal program, where ineligibility would result in a loss of federal funds to the State.

(f) For the purposes of this section, “State” shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, the State itself, any city, county, city and county, public university system, including the University of California, community college district, school district, special district, or any other political subdivision or governmental instrumentality of or within the State.

(g) The remedies available for violations of this section shall be the same, regardless of the injured party’s race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, as are otherwise available for violations of then-existing California antidiscrimination law.

(h) This section shall be self-executing. If any part or parts of this section are found to be in conflict with federal law or the United States Constitution, the section shall be implemented to the maximum extent that federal law and the United States Constitution permit. The proponents of the bill, the most radical progressives in California (which is really saying something), say it’s about removing the ban on affirmative action, first passed in 1996. The University of California Board of Regents, headed by Janet Napolitano, supports this bill. Many have absurdly cited the CCP coronavirus pandemic and the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department to say the era of affirmative action should end. Opponents call it nothing more than a racial spoils system designed to grant preferential treatment to some communities of color over others.

Jim Jordan Calls On Nadler To Help Obtain Trump-Russia Documents Before Barr Hearing

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, is calling on Rep. Jerry Nadler to help obtain documents and testimony related to the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign prior to a hearing in July for Attorney General William Barr.

“The Attorney General’s appearance is also an opportunity for the Committee to conduct oversight of the Obama-Biden Administration’s weaponization of the Justice Department and intelligence community against the Trump campaign,” Jordan wrote in a letter to Nadler obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Barr is scheduled to testify before the panel on July 28, the first time he has appeared before Congress since 2019.

Nadler has already indicated that he plans to quiz Barr over his handling of several politically charged investigations involving Trump associates such as Roger Stone and Michael Flynn.

Jordan is calling on Nadler to also dig deep into the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign, and surveillance conducted against several Trump associates.

“As you claim to be so concerned about politicization at the Justice Department, this information should shock and alarm you,” wrote Jordan, who said that Nadler has “been oddly silent and disinterested.”

“To allow the Committee to better understand the scope and extent of the Obama-Biden Justice Department’s targeting of the Trump campaign and transition team, the Committee must obtain specific documents and testimony from relevant Obama-Biden Administration witnesses,” said Jordan.

Jordan did not specify the documents and witness interviews he is seeking. But he listed several revelations from the Justice Department inspector general’s report on the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe, as well as documents from the investigation of Flynn.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department disclosed notes that former FBI counterintelligence investigator Peter Strzok took during a Jan. 5, 2017, meeting that indicated that former Vice President Joe Biden brought up the Logan Act in reference to Flynn.

“The notes show that Vice President Joe Biden suggested using the Logan Act to target LTG Flynn, which wound up as the basis for the FBI’s subsequent interview of LTG Flynn,” wrote Jordan.

California 17-year-olds may get right to vote in primary elections

A bid to allow 17-year-olds to vote in California primary elections is headed for the November ballot, 16 years after it was first introduced in the Legislature.

A bill that won final approval Friday, ACA4, would allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they would turn 18 before the general election. As a constitutional amendment, it must be passed by a majority of voters in November before it can take effect.

For Assemblyman Kevin Mullin, the San Mateo Democrat who carried the measure in the Legislature, the bill is a matter of simple justice.

Young voters eligible to vote to candidates in a general election “should have the right to shape that field in the primary,” he said. “We should look at elections as a cycle,” with the primary and general considered as parts of the same election.

It was a family effort — Mullin’s measure was first introduced by his father, former South San Francisco Assemblyman Gene Mullin, in 2004.

“This is the sixth attempt and the third time I’ve introduced the bill,” said Kevin Mullin. “But this is the first time it ever got as far as the Senate floor.”

The key vote was in the state Senate on Thursday. The Legislature requires a two-thirds vote to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot, and Mullin was short just a few hours before his measure came up.

“I need 27 and I’ve got 25 for sure and three or four others who are leaning my way,” he said before the vote. “It’s tough to lock in 27.”

He didn’t have to worry. The final vote was 31-7, and while all the opponents were Republican, Mullin even pulled a couple of GOP votes for the measure.

The bill breezed through the Assembly Friday afternoon when it was returned for concurrence with Senate amendments. It now moves directly to the ballot.

In the past, it’s been Republicans who have blocked efforts to allow 17-year-olds to vote.

“The issue has always been framed in a partisan context, with Republicans arguing that we’re trying to build more Democrats earlier,” Mullin said. “But today most young people don’t register Democrat or Republican — they register as no party preference.”

That’s not exactly true. In California, 16- and 17-year-olds are allowed to pre-register to vote, which makes them automatically eligible to cast ballots when they turn 18. Of the 162,921 teenagers pre-registered as of Feb. 18, the most recent state report, 42% declared themselves as Democrats, 15% as Republicans and 36% as no party preference.

Among the state’s 20 million-plus registered voters, 45% are Democrats, 24% Republicans and 25% no party preference.

Republicans aren’t the measure’s only opponents. The Election Integrity Project California argued in a letter to the Legislature that 17-year-olds, most of them still high school students, don’t have the life experience they need to cast an educated vote.

At 17, teenagers “are still legally children and can’t even go to a tanning salon without a parents’ permission,” said Ruth Weiss, vice president of the organization, which recently filed a suit forcing Los Angeles County to purge its rolls of inactive voters. “We have to draw a line somewhere, and the government draws that line at 18.”

Supporters of the measure include Secretary of State Alex Padilla, the California League of Conservation Voters, the state’s League of Women Voters and the California School Boards Association.

One man dead, 40 infected at Sonoma County nursing, senior homes

A man who died Sunday was one of 40 people who have been infected in Sonoma County senior care and nursing homes since the start of the month, officials said.

County health officer Dr. Sundari Mase announced the new cases, which include 21 residents and 19 staff members, as well as the death Tuesday. She did not say which senior and nursing homes have been affected.

Until June, the county had only 13 total infections in senior care and nursing homes, Dr. Mase said. The man who died Sunday was the fifth person killed by the coronavirus in Sonoma County and one of 974 total confirmed cases since the pandemic began, according to data from the California Department of Public Health.

County health officials confirmed Tuesday that the man who died Sunday was a resident at a nursing home, but they did not disclose which facility. The nursing home Broadway Villa Post-Acute recently reported at least one resident death, according to the California Department of Public Health.

State data also shows active coronavirus cases at nursing facilities Petaluma Post-Acute Rehab and Santa Rosa Post-Acute. Heather Hunter, a spokeswoman at the Brookdale Paulin Creek senior living center in Santa Rosa, confirmed the facility has “more than one” coronavirus case.

Rohish Lal, a spokesman for the Sonoma County Department of Health Services, said that a recent outbreak at a single nursing home contributed to the 50 new infections reported countywide this week. He declined to identify the nursing home, citing ongoing litigation.

Major COVID-19 outbreak at rural California prison. Officials blame state for inmate transfer

Three prison inmates who were moved from San Quentin to rural Lassen County earlier this month have tested positive for COVID-19 and likely sparked an outbreak that’s left county leaders fuming as case counts soar and reopening plans hang in jeopardy, local officials said.

As of Friday morning, at least 159 inmates at California Correctional Center in Susanville have tested positive for the disease in the past 14 days, according to the state’s online testing dashboard. It’s the first outbreak of its type in Susanville, the county’s largest city where prisons are a major employer.

The outbreak happened after the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation transferred three inmates from San Quentin earlier this month, said Richard Egan, Lassen County’s administrative officer.

By Thursday this week, 76 inmates tested positive. The number doubled by Friday morning.

The transfers initially tested negative for COVID-19 and were housed with other inmates, Egan said. It was unclear whether people from any other facility had also been transferred into Susanville.

But local officials said the source of the recent outbreak must be the San Quentin transfers, rather than a staff member coming into the prison for work, since the county has an extremely low infection rate.

San Quentin this month has rocketed to the top of a list of state prison outbreaks after inmates were transferred from another infected facility. At least 539 people in custody have contracted the disease. The state on Monday issued a two-week freeze on most inmate transfers.

Originally built in 1963, California Correctional Center has four facilities and 18 conservation camps. It houses more than 3,000 minimum and medium-security inmates and serves as a gateway for training and placement into California’s prison wildfire program.

“Frankly, we were disappointed that the institutions made the decision to continue to transfer inmates in and out of CCC,” Egan said in an interview Friday. “It seems like that concern was warranted.”

The outbreak raises the possibility that staff members could get infected and spread the disease to the community. Egan said the county has struggled to get information from the state about the outbreak in their prison. The health officer does not have jurisdiction over the prison and was not consulted about the transfer, Egan said.

CDCR declined to address the county’s concerns about infected San Quentin inmates bringing COVID-19 into the facility. Spokeswoman Dana Simas said in a statement the department was monitoring the situation and that prison-wide testing finished this week, meaning additional positive cases could be expected.

California’s prison medical system was placed under federal receivership in 2006, after a federal court ruled that conditions for inmates violated their constitutional rights. The receiver is still in place.

“Additionally, we are working closely with the court-appointed Federal Receiver on inmate transfers, as well as public health agencies and stakeholders for the safety and security of our inmates, staff and communities,” she said.

Not counting the prison outbreak, Lassen County has just three other COVD-19 positive residents. It has reported only 12 infections since the pandemic began. No deaths have been reported.

David Teeter, chair of the Lassen County Board of Supervisors, on Thursday evening said he was “mad as hell at the State of California” for bringing an outbreak to his county. Now, residents in his county are at increased risk of contracting COVID-19, despite months of work to keep the virus at bay.

A co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network weighed in on the 2020 election, in an apparent violation of Internal Revenue Service laws prohibiting 501(c)(3) organizations from engaging in campaign activity.

Patrisse Cullors, in her official capacity as a co-founder of the BLM Global Network, told CNN on June 19 that “our goal is to get Trump out.”

“Trump not only needs to not be in office in November but he should resign now,” she insisted. “Trump needs to be out of office. He is not fit for office.”

According to the IRS, a 501(c)(3) organization “may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates.”

The prohibition includes “public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office.” Organizations that violate this policy may lose their tax-exempt status.

The donation page for BLM is linked with ActBlue Charities, the 501(c)(3) wing of the Democratic political action committee ActBlue.

The BLM Global Network is not individually registered as a 501(c)(3), but instead operates through a fiscal sponsorship agreement with the nonprofit organization Thousand Currents. Fiscal sponsorships allow the sponsoring organization to accept and direct donations on behalf of the sponsored group. But an organization sponsored by a 501(c)(3) is still required to comply with the regulations governing nonprofits, and is still prohibited from making partisan political statements.

Cleta Mitchell, an expert on campaign finance regulation and tax laws governing charitable organizations such as BLM, told The Federalist that partisan political activity by tax-exempt 501(c)(3) groups is “completely prohibited” by federal tax law.

BLM “must comply with all the rules that govern 501(c)(3) organizations,” Mitchell said.

Thousand Currents, the nonprofit that fiscally sponsors Black Lives Matter, was also recently exposed for having a convicted terrorist on its board of directors.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network and the IRS did not return requests for comment.

Astor was of German stock, born Johann Jakob Astor on July 17, 1763, in Walldorf near Heidelberg. His father was Johann Jacob Astor, a butcher, and his mother was Maria Magdalena vom Berg. He worked first in his father's and also sold dairy. In 1779, at the age of 16,he went to Londonto join his older brother George to work for an uncle at his piano and flute factory, Astor & Broadwood. He soon learned English and changed his name accordingly. Around late 1783 or early 1784, Astor immigrated to NYC, staying in the boarding house of Sarah Cox Todd, a widow. He and her daughter by the same name married in 1785. He had gone to NY to work for his older brother Henry in his butcher shop, but on the voyage there he had met a fur trader. While working for his brother, he also bought hides from descendants of Pre-Columbians, tanning them himselfand selling them in Londonfor a huge profit. He soon established his own shop in NY in the late 1780s, while also working as a representative of his uncle's musical instrument factory. The discovery of gold impelled him to branch out around the country. With the Jay Treaty passed in 1794 between Britain and the U.S., he was able to open establishments in Canada and around the Great Lakes, ===and in London, he procured a contract with the North West Company, perhaps with the aid of Alexander Henry.

Alexander Henry (called "the elder" to differentiate him from another younger relative), was a justice of the peace in Montreal, Canada, and had been since 1794, and would continue to be until 1821. He had previously been a captain in the militia.He was in the habit of entertaining the top merchants in his home,and attended parties. Born in 1739 in New Brunswick, NJ, of a merchant family, he was a relative of the minister Matthew Henry.His father, Alexander Henry, had emigrated to British North America from the West of England. Alexander, his son, was also a merchant in Albany, NY, supplying the British army during the French and Indian War. He was the first Englishman known to have visited the area of Milwaukee, in 1760.

In early 1761, Henry met the one time fur trader Jean Baptiste Leduc, who encouraged him to trade in the area and around Lake Superior.He then got a fur-trade permission at Montreal from the British who had just taken over the New France in Canada.He hired a guide who would be his longtime canoer, Etienne-Charles Campion. In 1765, Henry got a license to trade in the Lake Superior area. ==Backed by British funds, and having had relations with French Canadians, able to deal among both groups, and formed a partnership with Jean Baptiste Cadotte, Sr., a man he had met during that time of adventure. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman have given millions to political groups, including some that oppose President Trump, raising questions about their seats on a Pentagon advisory board, according to a report.

The two tech giants have contributed nearly $10 million this election cycle even as they sit on the Defense Innovation Board, the Daily Caller reported on Tuesday, citing filings with the Federal Election Commission.

“Knowing that individuals who openly despise and undermine President Trump serve on those boards while only two of 15 people on our campaign’s national security advisory committee landed positions in the administration is nothing short of horrendous,” J.D. Gordon, who served as the Trump campaign’s national security adviser, told the Daily Caller.

Gordon, a Pentagon spokesman in the George W. Bush administration, said that while such advisory boards have much influence on the Pentagon, they are “extremely valuable for career advancement, financial opportunities and other benefits.”

The Defense Innovation Board was created by Ash Carter, the secretary of defense in the Obama administration, in 2016 to advise the military on the innovative use of technology.

Schmidt has contributed nearly $2.9 million, including $750,000 to Future Forward USA PAC on May 13, the report said.

An ad released by the group in 2018 plays on the classic children’s song, “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands,” and shows country club types clapping and smiling as images show white supremacists marching and Russian officials applauding a picture of Vladimir Putin.

Hoffman has given more than $6.3 million to groups backing Democratic campaigns in the 2020 cycle, including $1.5 million to Unite the Country, a PAC that supports Joe Biden, and $1.6 million to the Democrats Grassroots Victory Fund.

The advisory board did not respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.

Neither did reps for Hoffman and Schmidt.

1,700 Troops Will Support July 4 'Salute to America' Demonstrations, Pentagon Says

For a second year, the Department of Defense will provide extensive support to 'Salute to America' events in honor of Independence Day, the Pentagon announced Friday.

In all, some 1,700 troops will work to support the Department of the Interior with demonstrations in Washington, D.C. and flyovers of other historic U.S. cities and locations, including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, South Dakota, according to a statement from Lt. Col. Chris Mitchell, a Pentagon spokesman.

"The flyovers provide an opportunity for DoD to demonstrate the capabilities and professionalism of the United States Armed Forces," Mitchell said in the statement. "Flying hours are a sunk cost for the Department of Defense, and these aircraft and crews would be using these hours for proficiency and training at other locations if they were not conducting these flyovers."

Officials did not say which military aircraft would participate in the flyovers, but described them as a mix of current DoD and heritage aircraft. It's also not clear what units and services will be involved in the flyovers and other demos. The military will also give "musical and ceremonial support" to July 4 celebrations in Washington, D.C., according to the statement.

"The highlight of this year's celebration will be our salute to the Great Cities of the American Revolution.," Mitchell said. "The flyovers will begin in Boston and proceed to New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore. From there they will join other Department of Defense and heritage aircraft in the Salute to America over our nation's capital."

Last year's 'Salute to America' celebration involved flyovers by the B-2 stealth bomber, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and F-22 Raptor, as well as static ground vehicle displays. It's not completely clear how the novel coronavirus pandemic will limit ground gatherings in Washington, D.C., where the city is proceeding with a cautious and gradual reopening process and groups are limited to 50 people or fewer.

The city's annual July 4 parade has been canceled amid virus concerns.

"There will be an Independence Day celebration this year and it will have a different look than 2019 to ensure the health and safety of those attending," White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement earlier this month. "The American people have shown tremendous courage and spirit in the fight against this global pandemic just as our forefathers did in the fight to secure our independence, and both deserve celebration on America's birthday this year."
