So, /out/, I'm going on a 3-4 night camping trip in a backwoods campsite on the north of Vancouver Island (amenities are clean water and an outhouse, plus the occasional patrol to make sure there're no dead bodies lying around) in February.
I'm an idiot who has only ever gone summer camping at pleb campsites. (Hot water/showers, firewood sold on-site, etc)

I figure I'd bring a week's worth of supplies, but avoid using the easy option unless we'd be fucked otherwise.
I.e., try to find dry wood/kindling in the snowy forests and make our own fires, but if we prove so incompetent that we can't even manage that, we have a camp stove, fuel, and our own kindling, etc, so that we don't freeze/starve. Basically, I want to get into outdoorsmanship, but recognize that I am a blithering yuppie who's gonna fuck up a lot before he gits gud.
Have any of you ever been winter camping? Anything you'd recommend a moron bring that I might not think of?
My buddy is /k/ incarnate, how do I not make him regret inviting me along? He says he'll teach me, but I want to do him proud.
Pic unrelated.

Also, post your dumbass friend/That Fucking Guy stories here.

Bring extra clothes, especially underwear and socks. I normally bring a set of clothes for each day plus two days extra. I can't count how many days I have in socks and underwear.

Some other things I like to bring include knives *one swiss army or a leatherman and one flip/buck knife* An E-tool, a good deal of rope *not paracord* and any other basic survival tools. Also, don't forget your mess kit. That is often overlooked.

Those are /k/ challenges, the low price points are basically to say "go out in the woods with the most bare basic shit and to not puss out". half the stories that comes from people doing those challenges either run out of food/water, can't handle being without expensive quality gear or, in the fun cases, people get fun stories of running from challenge in fear of skin walkers, usually they just hear things, but /k/ has a thing for skin walker stories so every weird sound is a skin walker.

That's also why most the challenges mention to exclude weapons, ammo and sometimes tools from the money so you don't choose between a back pack, rope, tarp and a flashlight vs a cheap knife or an incredibly cheap gun and a few rounds

Hi /out/. This is the first time I'm posting on this board,so please don't scream at me if it's not in this board's competence. The stuff I want to talk about is flashlights. They're like my little non-sexual fetish, and I decided I want a big one.All stuff I found was too damn expensive, until I came across Skyray king. This piece of shit I'm talking about is like $75 with batteries (4x 4000 mAh) and charger,it has 9 XM-L T6 LEDs,and they advise it has 15000 lumens. That's impossible, since one T6 led emits maximum of 910 lumens @ 10 watts. But still,it should be a lot of light. On full charge it should work for 210 minutes,so if they don't lie about the batteries capacity, that should mean it has 24 watts and around 2300 lumens (that's what I calculated,it's very estimated, but still closer to reality than 15000).So,does anyone here have some experience with those pieces of cheap aluminium, optionally alternatives for maximally around $100 with batteries and charger? Thanks.

maybe. grabbing moving trains is an Advanced Skill and not for Beginners - Trial-and-Error on gaging speed and landing involves roll-outs and splashes in heavy ballast - moon steps

At the time this was my Primary Transportation since after 73 when all the Forward Recons from Nam came back there were way too many incidents of Murder & Cannibalism on both sides of the Hitch Hiking thing

Basically, I could travel around, land in a town, hit the nearest laundromat and change clothes in the bathroom, wash the dirties & walk out clean and ready to find work

Often I would take Local Buslines to towns then put a cardboard sign on my backpack saying *Want Work* and start off down the road & within an hour get a ride by a Contractor who needed help pulling concrete for a slab or foundation, etc

So it was a temporary thing that continued off-and-on up until about 2003 and even then everything was containerized so I loaded my bike onto the end of one of those conex flatbeds and went from Del Rio to Tucson

Faggots over at /k/ keep telling me to go innawoods, but I'm not sure exactly where I go to do that.
Is it even possible to legally go out into some woods to camp in America? The closest I've heard of is "rustic sites" where a campsite just gives you a slightly larger area.
Is it easy and safe enough to just sit in a State Park overnight? The worst we have around here are coyotes as far as I know.

Where do you live, OP?

State park: Usually have to camp at specified sites, and get a permit for the area to stay overnight. Some have toilets (outhouses), fire pits, and locations to hang a bear bag.
National park: Same deal, but often more restrictive. Many have more 'improved' sites with toilets, fire pits, and even showers.
National forest/BLM: Where much of the 'innawoods' goes on. Very few amenities (no toilets, maybe a rock fire ring). You can camp anywhere except for certain wildlife rehab areas, and you have to be away from water sources by 100 yards IIRC. Some are very peaceful, others have lots of dirt-bikes or ATVs making noise. A post on each trail tells what vehicles are allowed. You can walk anywhere, though.
Wilderness: The most open to backpacking, but also restricted. You can basically camp anywhere, away from water as above. You can have no wheels (bikes, carts, etc.) or motors (chainsaws, ATVs). You can stay as long as 14 days.

Go to an outdoors store and get a good map of your area. Good ones will break down the various types of land around you, and even list what is allowed, where trails are, etc.

File: 1423182361307.jpg (382.62 KB,1000x667,1000:667,canoe-camping-3.jpg)

Allow me to share my tranquil little story to start off:

Last summer I went out camping with my father. He has had a canoe lying around unused for years now and finally we decided to just get out and bloody use it. We cleaned it up, packed the car full of anything and everything we imagined we could use (including loads of essential and not so essential provisions), strapped on the thing, and were off to the nearest canoe friendly lake system.

It was simply the coziest shit ever. The nature was wonderful, so was the weather, and being out in the open waters you always have a good view on the surrounding landscape. Whenever you get tired of paddling you simply stop, let the other one take over or simply drift until you feel like picking up the pace again. I'm not very fit or strong but we made pretty good progress and I didn't even break a sweat.

Whenever we felt a little hungry we just pulled up on a beach and had some coffee and something small to eat. Halfway through the day we decided not to return but to sleep over for the night (we had brought a tent just in case we felt like it). We paddled until the low water combined with a particularly shallow stream didn't allow us any further, but we conveniently found a camping spot near the end of that last stream as the sun was starting to set. We cooked some food and called it a day. We spent the next day going back, satisfied.

Best /out/ experience of my life, definitely doing it again this summer, except I'll be out for more than a night for sure.

No piss bottle? Not only does it save you from getting up at night, it also retains the heat in your urine!

Make sure the bottle is shaped differently than your water bottles. Unless you're Bear Grylls of course.

put your tent on logs and build wind brakers around it, it's not so bad

had 3 layer of wool blanket down. wind is not the problem, its the humidity and the sheer cold of the air. hard to keep your nose for long when you have to keep your face out of your sleeping bag. you got to remember that not everybody keep dry in the woods too. when you've been walking and hunting for the whole day your already wet from top to botom. ive yet to encounter any suitable material for clothing. plastic is shit. wool, cotton and down is best, but so pricey.
even then, after a couple of days you cant keep dry. dont know how people did in the past. boots and glove are the worst part. even the best boot coupled with 2pair of good wool socks dont cut it, glove keep getting wet.

have you ever been to canada?

For me, the quality of the sleeping bag was the #1 thing. A quality sub zero sleeping bag is a top investment for any outdoorsman.
