Is anyone here a park ranger?
How is it?

I am actually, for the forest service. I get to go hiking a lot, but dealing with the general public and watching them trash nature and then shit everywhere in the bathroom kinda sucks.

So is this the proper board to bring up a discussion on hunting? I'm working on passing my bowhunter's education before eventually taking to the field to claim a few furbearing pests (such as coyotes as they're absolutely everywhere).

I recently obtained a few tools for working with animal hide and leather, hoping to eventually not only skin my kills but create a few nice pieces of clothing to honor them.

Plus, I'm doing some research on good jerky techniques.

But one thing that's been eating at the back of my mind for a few is performing a proper coup de grace on a dying animal. I want to make sure it passes into the next world as easy as possible. What type of knives work best for this? should I even go in for the finish or stay back and finish from afar?

It's killing me. I'm looking for bow woods, and I have this tree in my yard (wood's probably not suitable, very stiff, very strong, though. Using it to make a couple singlesticks for fencing.).

I'm including a picture of a cluster of leaves I took. The wood is pale, but turns yellowish as it dries. The bark is smooth, and if carefully done when first cut, can be peeled off whole.

I'm guessing you've got trees to spare if you want to build a bow. Count me jealous.

Does it have any seed pods, nuts, or berries? I won't know since I'm not from the area, but someone else might. Where I live a big favorite is catalpa, with its lightning growth, huge leaves, and long bean pods.

Got the same boots, can confirm theyre pretty good for general hiking, theyre not great for mountaineering though as I slipped quite a few times when I walked off the main trails

Dont know about hunting though, as I'm one of those hiking purists (Golden rule, avoid going off trails, dont disturb nature whatever happens etc etc)

Anyone else use, or totally in love with portable kayaks? I am a proud and happy owner of an Oru Kayak Bay. They are a bit pricey, but are perfect when you're short on room, are lighter than conventional kayaks, and a notch more elegant in my reckoning.

http://www.orukayak.com/

I thought folding kayaks were enough. Boy was I surprised when I learned about Pakayak! Its sections nest into each other.

http://pakayak.com/

It's heavier than my Bay, at 55 vs. 26 lbs, but its heavier body would make it a better choice for white water, a no-go for Oru kayaks. I don't need a 2nd kayak, but will be getting a $10 sticker in Pakayak's ongoing Kickstarter. Best to encourage healthy competition I figure.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pakayak/pakayak-the-ultimate-packable-kayak

Maybe in the future Oru Kayak and Pakayak will be the Coke and Pepsi of portable kayaks. Since I've seen images of both in San Francisco Bay, I'd love if the companies and fans could get together some day for playful competitions and outdoorsmen's fellowship.

I love taking my Oru Bay on the river. It's light enough to be carried through the woods from my house and back, and always draws attention. Anyone else partake in the wonderful world of portable kayaks, or are conventional kayaks your preference?

The Oru's hull is made of coroplast, and can withstand an occasional graze when kayaking on calm water, so broad rivers or lakes are ideal. I've taken mine out a half dozen times; no problems so far. If you don't do white water kayaking which the Oru isn't designed for you should be in great shape.

Oru made a video where you can see them drop the kayak from a two-storey roof and doesn't sustain any damage a little Gorilla Glue won't fix. Also check the reviews it's received in various places; I don't remember any other users reporting the vulnerabilities you're concerned with either.

See you on the water!

First time posting here! (So if I got the wrong board, please do correct me)

I have some sort of dream for my future self.

I want to live for a long period of time (4-6 years) in a private cabin built by myself, noting that it should hold at least 4 people (Wife and 3 kids, maybe 5) all the while being excluded enough in nature so that you can hunt and for my kids to grow up far from the destructive force that is mass media/technology.

I know far eastern Russia is a good candidate since it has vast secluded places, but I made this post to see your opinions on location and if it is actually possible to do.

(Obviously me and my wife would have extensive education and practice on guns, medicine, farming and hunting.)

i wanted to do that too

but doing such a thing without God in your heart will bring you all into depression at best

pretty often people take their wifes into forest and then they cry about not being able to meet their friends and other crap

you need to be a strong man

Orthodox Christianity is the way

God bless!

hope you will do it

i have a some properties near my capital city

when i finish prepare myself better i will probably do it

all i need is my wife and a church less than 100km away from my cabin

Dear /out/doorsman, should you or others visit again with these interests, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the "Russian Homestead Act" passed last year.

Here's a well-written but predictably negative piece featuring an early settler from the New York Times.

I don't have much outdoors experience, but I know there is still a lot of opportunity for freer living closer to the US. I remember reading about an American who moved into a cabin near the Manicouagan Reservoir in Quebec for at least a decade.

What kind of challenges can be done here?

Avid survivalist from the Nordics who lived in Ireland for a few years. There's not really much you can do to be honest. It's at best a "controlled simulation" of a sort. People everywhere and no real wilderness. But you can still go out and have the outdoor experience though.
