In cases where nations have multiple potential monarchs, the solution varies. In one instance, Brazil has two monarchical lines. One is a republican, so the Monarchists there have picked the other candidate for Emperor purely because he would accept the Crown. They wish to have him elected via referendum, in accordance with Brazilian law. This is acceptable, as one potential line is corrupted and is not capable to rule.

As a libertarian neo-feudalist (making an-cap real again), I think that when the title-deed to land is owned– not what we think of as land 'ownership' today which is really just leased/rented from the state– it is possible to declare oneself Monarch of that territory… but if you lack the millitary force to defend your territory, it may be expedient to pledge your allegiance (a mutually agreed upon contract) to another more powerful Monarch in return protection.
Alternatively, you could organize or join a convention of equals in a confederation for the purpose of mutual defense.
Personally speaking, when it comes to selecting the heir to my Title(s) I would choose from among my children. But I think there is no one method that is best for awarding/revoking Titles. An individual title could have a constitution defining the method of awarding/revoking title, or it could simply be left up to the current holder to determine the method of selecting a successor. If a Title becomes wholey subordinate to superior Title, giving up all rights, it could be dissolved a moments notice.
The reason for creating wholey subordinate titles, is to have a single individual or family resident in that territory to manage it for you. You could appoint on of your children, or a gifted administrator the title to manage said territory.
The benifits of this kind of feudalism decline when superior titles enforce more and more common laws on their subordinates. Whereas the system thrives when superior titles are 'hands-off' and only intervene when absolutely nessisary, often just replacing the Title holder. The benifit here is that an individual Title territory can be (in theory) be administered and governed (what laws are in effect) in the best way possible for the situation.
