“We were tired, hungry and cold,” Cicchinelli said.

On Jan. 4, 1945, the men of Company A were preparing for an attack on a German machine gun nest near Dairomont, Belgium, but they knew if they opened fire, they might hit their comrades who were circling behind the Germans.

Then came the order that Cicchinelli thought he’d never hear: “Fix bayonets!”

The paratroopers had trained with bayonets a year before in Panama, but they never thought they’d use them. Especially in a country and a climate so different from Panama.

Cicchinelli and the small group he was scouting for attached the bayonets to the front of their rifles and charged. They fought the stunned Germans hand-to-hand, stabbing them in their fox holes and pummeling them with the butts of their guns.

“I remember it as clear as if it were today,” Cicchinelli said. “It was one of the scariest things I ever did.”

When the fighting was over – it lasted only 15-20 minutes – 64 Germans were dead. The rare bayonet attack, for which the 551st is now famous, scored an early Allied victory in what came to be known as the Battle of the Bulge.

“It was the longest 15 minutes of my life,” Cicchinelli said in a recent telephone interview from his home in Sun City West, Ariz.

Cicchinelli, 85, recounts the bayonet attack and other World War II exploits in the new book “GOYA: The Story of Joseph Cicchinelli, a 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion Paratrooper” (Militaria Bastogne), written with Belgian Army researcher Patrick Brion.

Cicchinelli, second cousin of Massillon Mayor Frank Cicchinelli and a former Massillon resident, has spent the last 24 years trying to shed the ghosts of World War II and bring attention to the heroic deeds of the 551st.

Scholars have referred to the 551st as the Lost Battalion because it disbanded days after the Battle of the Bulge, and the records of its World War II service were either destroyed or lost.

IT WAS D-DAY plus five (June 11, 1944) when Robert Cole, a 29-year-old lieutenant-colonel with the 101st Airborne Division, found himself leading a column of 250 paratroops under heavy fire across Normandy’s bocage country. His objective: The Nazi-occupied town of Carentan.

The Allies had been trying (without success) for two days to secure the village. And now, with German mortar and artillery rounds falling as thick as rain, something needed to be done – and fast – to break the impasse before Cole’s detachment was completely wiped out. That’s when the Texas-born career soldier hatched what some might consider a foolhardy plan.

The young commander called in a smoke barrage in front of the German positions and then, to everyone’s astonishment, ordered his men to fix bayonets and charge. Nearly half of his unit was mowed down by machine gun fire as they darted across a patch of open ground on the edge of the town, but more than 100 of Cole’s men did manage to reach the German lines unscathed.

With the “Screaming Eagles” suddenly in their midst, the Axis defenders panicked and fled for their lives. American reinforcements rushed in to hold the ground and by the next day, the town of Carentan was safely in Allied hands.

The brazen attack would go down in history as “Cole’s Charge.” For leading the assault, the young commander would win the Medal of Honor. Sadly, he’d be killed in combat before the citation could be presented. To this day, the action is remembered as one of the few bayonet attacks of World War Two.

For centuries, cold-steel assaults were part of nearly every infantry engagement, both large and small. But with the advent of semi-automatic rifles and rapid-fire machine guns, bayonet attacks had become risky, even suicidal. Yet amazingly, there were still a handful of occasions during the Second World War and in the decades that followed in which leaders in various situations would call out the words: “Fix bayonets!” Consider these:

The bayonet transformed the musket from a medium to long range weapon into one effective at close range as well. There was no longer a need for pikemen to defend musketeers in battle because one soldier could defend himself against an enemy less than 100 yards away. The bayonet was primarily used during cavalry charges and in close range combat. The weight, shape and attachment of bayonets have changed throughout history in order to increase the effectiveness of the musket and the bayonet.

The first use of bayonets was simply a knife stuck on the end of a musket barrel used by French hunters catching wild boar. This combination was then used in warfare, and became known as a plug bayonet. Though an effective weapon, a downside of the plug bayonet was that the musketeer could not shoot after affixing it. The plug bayonet was succeeded by the socket bayonet, which fit over the muzzle of the barrel. A zig-zag motion around the bayonet lug allowed the musketeer to easily affix or remove the bayonet while still securing it in place. The major advantage to the socket bayonet was that the musket could still be fired while the bayonet was attached. To overcome the fact that not all soldiers used the same weapon, or weapons with the same barrel sizes, the socket bayonet was modified to have a split down the side. An intentional slit running the entire length of the socket allowed for an adjustable fit of the socket to the size of the barrel. Unlike the plug bayonet, the socket and split-socket bayonets had three edges, giving them the name “triangular bayonets”. Given forging processes at the time, a triangular blade was easier to create, and offered increased stability from a two sided or knife blade bayonet without much additional weight. During the War of 1812, bayonets for the British Brown Bess, French Charleville, and United States Springfield muskets were between 12 and 15 inches in length, and continued to have the triangular shape.

Ship of Fools, the Enduring Metaphor

I stumbled upon our society's most fascinating enduring metaphor by chance. Clicking around on iTunes, I noticed that I owned six different songs called "Ship of Fools".

But these weren't six different versions of one song. "Ship of Fools" was not a classic cover song, like "Dancing in the Streets" or "Hallelujah". Rather, six different songs called "Ship of Fools" were written and performed between the 1960s and 1980s by the Doors, the Grateful Dead, John Cale, Bob Seger, World Party and Robert Plant.

Strangely, all six were good songs, which seemed to me as significant as the fact that all six had the same title. How often do six good songs show up in a row on a random playlist? What on earth, I wondered, was going on with this ship of fools? What was this meme about?

I knew that the concept of a ship of fools can be traced back to Book Six of Plato's Republic. Socrates and Adeimantus are discussing the different models by which a government can rule wisely, and Socrates offers this analogy to Adeimantus:—cont. in images and the at the link

TREASURIES-Yield curve steepest in three years as market awaits COVID-19 stimulus

The Treasury yield curve steepened on Friday to its highest since February 2018 as investors waited to see whether the U.S. Congress would agree on $900 billion in fresh COVID-19 relief by the end of the day.

The spread between the two- and 10-year yields , the most common measure of the yield curve, rose as high as 82.7 basis points on Friday afternoon, its steepest in three years. The spread between the five- and 30-year yields also widened, but only to its highest since Dec. 7. The yield curve broadly has steepened this week on stimulus and vaccine optimism, as well as the Federal Reserve’s decision on Wednesday to maintain its current pace and duration of bond buying, which pushed longer-dated yields higher. A recent move higher in longer-dated yields sparked debate over whether the Fed would alter its Treasury purchases to cap yields. The 10-year yield was last up 1.3 basis points at 0.943%. The 30-year yield rose 1.8 basis points to 1.693%. The short end of the curve dipped, with the two-year yield last down 0.4 basis point at 0.123%.

Oil futures score a 7th straight weekly gain

Oil futures climbed on Friday and marked a weekly gain for a seventh consecutive session. Crude prices rose as Moderna Inc.'s MRNA, -2.62% COVID vaccine is poised to get vaccine authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda. However, "successful vaccine execution" is what is needed to send U.S. benchmark crude prices well above the $50 level and "that is unlikely to happen for months." January West Texas Intermediate crude CLF21, +1.43% rose 74 cents, or 1.5%, to settle at $49.10 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. For the week, prices based on the front-month contract rose 5.4%, according to FactSet data.

Congress looked increasingly unlikely on Friday to meet a deadline to agree on a new coronavirus stimulus bill and instead may pass a third stopgap spending bill to keep the government from shutting down at midnight. But the move steeper in the Treasury market suggested investors still believed a deal would get done. With Brexit and U.S. fiscal negotiations expected to stumble across the finish line this weekend, and U.S. stock market indexes lower, U.S. Treasuries “showed hardly any sympathy to established correlations,” wrote Edward Acton, U.S. rates strategist at Citigroup.

“After a modest flattening rally on the New York open … the term-structure promptly sold off back to the overnight yield and curve highs and tread water there for the vast majority of the afternoon,” said Acton, noting that low trading volume - roughly 60% of the 30-day average - contributed to the lack of movement. The majority of the Fed's purchases of Treasury debt since March have been in shorter maturities, which has helped keep yields at the short end of the curve low and has allowed the longer-dated yields to rise modestly. The continuation of that policy left the curve slightly steeper, on trend with the recent direction of the market.

Stimulus hopes, and the rollout this week of a COVID-19 vaccine, have so far allowed the Treasury market to shrug off the bleak labor market data.

A rack (sometimes called a triangle)is a piece of equipment that is used to place billiard balls in their starting positions at the beginning of a pocket billiards game. Rack may also be used as a verb to describe the act of setting billiard balls in their starting positions (e.g. "to rack the balls"), or as a noun to describe a set of balls that are in their starting positions (e.g. "a rack of balls", more often called a pack or a pyramid in British English).

Traditional racks are in the form of triangular frames, usually made from wood, plastic or metal. A modern variation, called a template rack, is made from a thin material (usually0.14 mmor less) that contains precision cut-outs to hold the balls in place. Purported benefits of template racks include a more consistent racking, and their popularity has warranted specific inclusion in profession rules.[1] Unlike traditional racks, template racks are left on the table during the break shot and removed at the players' earliest convenience. For this reason, template racks are almost never used for games where it is common to slow-break (i.e. not create a large spread of balls) since it is significantly more likely that the rack will interfere with slow-rolling balls.

The most common shape of a rack is that of an equilateral triangle. Triangular racks are used for eight-ball, straight pool, one-pocket, bank pool, snooker and many other games. Diamond-shaped frames are sometimes use for the game of nine-ball (although a triangular rack can also be used) and template racks come in a variety of shapes.

Straight pool (14.1 continuous)

In the initial rack in straight pool, fifteen balls are racked in a triangular rack, with the center of the apex ball placed over the foot spot; the 1 ball is placed on the rack’s right corner, and the 5 ball on left corner from the racker's vantage point. This rule developed because the color and pattern of the 1 and 5 balls are thought to provide maximum contrast with the end rails and are the balls targeted on straight pool's exacting standard break. All other balls are placed at random.

Straight pool is played to a specific number of points agreed on prior to the match's start, with each pocketed ball being worth one point to the shooter. Because the game is played to a number of points normally far in excess of the fifteen points total available in the initial rack (in tournament play, one-hundred fifty points), multiple intragame racks are necessary. Intragame racking employs a separate set of rules from those in place at the game's start.

After the initial rack, the balls are played until only the cue ball and one object ball remain on the table's surface. At that time, the fourteen pocketed balls are racked with no apex ball, and the rack is so placed so that if the apex ball were in the rack, its center would rest directly over the table's foot spot. Play then continues with the cue ball shot from where it rested and the fifteenth ball from where it rested prior to racking.

A number of rules have developed which detail what must be done when one or both of the cue ball and fifteenth object ball are either in the rack area at the time an intragame rack is necessary, or are in such close proximity to the intragame racking area, that the physical rack cannot be used without moving the one or the other. The rules also vary depending on whether the cue ball or fifteenth ball are resting on the table's head spot. Such rules are detailed on the following chart (note therein that the kitchen refers to the area behind the table's head string).

The FBI on Friday briefed GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Speaker Pelosi on Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell’s relationship with Chinse spy Fang Fang.

The world’s wealthiest family moved $48 billion of Walmart Inc. stock to a different holding company in an action that may signal future share sales and bolster their philanthropy. Walton Enterprises LLC, the main investment entity of the retailer’s founding clan, transferred about 15% of Walmart’s outstanding shares to the Walton Family Holdings Trust, according to regulatory filings last week. The shift of 415 million shares represented about 29% of the shares held by Walton Enterprise. This entity now owns about 1 billion shares. The family owns about half of the retailer’s outstanding shares and last week’s transaction doesn’t change their overall stake. But if previous selling patterns by the trust are any guide, disposals may occur. In the past five years, the trust has sold 98% of the 194 million shares that were distributed to it in April 2015.

‘Study the Constitution’: General Michael Flynn Slams RINO Congressman for Rejecting Martial Law to Overturn Vote Steal

Flynn put this sniveling RINO in his place

General Michael Flynn schooled Rep. Adam Kitzinger (R-IL) after the anti-Trump RINO lawmaker suggested that the military could not be deployed to re-do the disputed 2020 presidential election marred with irregularities.

Kitzinger made a pathetic Twitter post in which he begged for a return of the Bush-era Republican Party that everybody hated and was regularly smoked at the polls by former president Barack Hussein Obama.

He wrote: “No. The military will not be “deployed” to re-run an election. It’s time for this to be shut down, and now. Gen. Flynn has lost his moral authority to be taken seriously, and the GOP needs to stand up to it.

This ridiculous comment is what prompted Gen. Flynn to smack down Kitzinger:

Kitzinger is shaking in his boots because Gen. Flynn’s strength is starting to resonate with patriots in the Republican Party who have had enough of tolerating blatant fraud.….

No. 2 Republican Senator Warns Government Shutdown Could Happen This Weekend

A member of the Republican leadership in the Senate warned a partial government shutdown may occur starting early on Saturday morning.

Funding for the federal government is slated to expire at midnight on Friday.

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said that some senators might not support a continuing resolution to fund the government if leaders do not come to an agreement on separate CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus stimulus measures.

“If it’s for a very short amount of time on a weekend, hopefully it’s not going to be something that would be all that harmful,” Thune told Fox Business. “The preferable route is to keep the government open and get this done and get it done quickly.”

In a comment to another reporter on Friday, Thune said that passing the continuing resolution to avert the government shutdown “could prove to be a pretty heavy lift.” The Senate would need the support of every senator to approve the measure in a timely manner, Thune said.

“It’s coming together, it’s just taking time, but it’s slower,” he added. “And you know I think we have to assume that even when there’s a deal announced, that by the time it gets written up and processed, we’re going to be pushing through the weekend.”…..
