Philanthropist Marty Silverman Dies

February 5, 2006

Morris "Marty" Silverman, who established the nation's richest prize for medical research, recently passed away in New York City at the age of 93, the Associated Press reports.

Using $40 million in proceeds from the 1984 sale of his company, National Equipment Rental, Silverman established the New York City-based Marty and Dorothy Silverman Foundation. Then, in 2000, he pledged $50 million to create the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, the amount to be disbursed over the next century in annual awards of $500,000 each. Through his foundation, which today has assets of $300 million, Silverman contributed to academic, Jewish, veterans, and social causes, supported programs to help neglected children and indigent seniors, and provided housing in Israel for thousands of former Soviet Jews. The New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center in Saratoga Springs and the Holocaust Museum in Houston were also established with his support.

In 1995, Silverman founded Renaissance Corp., an Albany-based nonprofit that is creating the University Heights complex in an area of the city that includes the medical center, a law school, a college of pharmacy, and the Sage Colleges. In describing Silverman, James Barba, president and chief executive of Albany Medical Center, once said the philanthropist combined "visionary character with a sort of little boy rascality."

Trump Campaign Files For Recount In Two Wisconsin Counties

Update (1110ET): The Trump campaign has filed a petition to recount two counties in Wisconsin - Milwaukee and Dane - alleging that absentee ballots were altered and improperly issued, and that voter ID laws were circumvented.

The Trump campaign is expected to file for a recount in the state of Wisconsin on Wednesday, a move which will cost the campaign up to $8 million in a state which Trump lost by just over 20,000 votes as of Wednesday - the closest margin out of the three Midwestern "blue wall" states" which flipped back after Trump won them in 2016.

Winning Wisconsin on a recount would give Trump just 10 electoral votes - not enough to retain the presidency, but it would be a decisive victory amid ongoing claims of election fraud and other irregularities throughout swing states. The campaign could shave money off the $7.9 million estimated cost if they file for recounts in select counties.

Recounts would need to start no later than Sunday and be finished by December 1st.

In addition to recounts, an audit of every November election is required by Wisconsin state law, whether requested by a candidate or not. According to the Star Tribune, "The audit will either take place as part of the recount or before the Dec. 1 certification if there is no recount, said Wisconsin Elections Commission spokesman Reid Magney. The audit of ballots from 190 randomly selected reporting units is done by hand to verify the machine count, Magney said."

China Berates Australia: Bow Down to Beijing’s Might and Ignore the U.S.

The new defense pact between Australia and Japan signed Tuesday in Tokyo has been dismissed as “dangerous” by Chinese state-owned media, which warns any resistance to Beijing is futile and will come at a heavy cost.

The Reciprocal Access Agreement will enable Australian warships and aircraft to operate further north and offer greater legal protection for service personnel across both countries, offering a crucial counterbalance to Beijing’s military which has expanded and advanced rapidly in recent years.

It was signed during Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in Tokyo.

But the Global Times, official mouthpiece of the Chinese communist dictatorship, said the U.S. allies were forcing Beijing to explore deeper military co-operation with other nations by their actions.

“We suggest Japan and Australia exercise restraint on the way to form a quasi military alliance against China,” it wrote on Tuesday night. “They will surely pay a corresponding price if China’s national interests are infringed upon and its security is threatened.”

The Global Times condemned both nations for “recklessly” taking the first step to conduct deep defence co-operation that targets a third party, and accused them of shifting the responsibilities of safeguarding regional unity to China.

“This is not only unfair, but also very dangerous,” it wrote. “China is unlikely to remain indifferent to U.S. moves aimed at inciting countries to gang up against China in the long run. It’s inevitable that China will take some sort of countermeasures.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian also entered the fray during his daily news conference on Tuesday, the South China Post reports.

He made it plain there was disappointment at Australia’s continued challenges to China’s presumed authority in the Indo/Pacific region as well as Canberra’s ban on Chinese companies contributing to Australia’s 5G telecommunications network.

The spokesman then denounced Australia for its attempts to crack down on alleged foreign interference in its domestic politics, a campaign Beijing believes was targeted at China.

Federal judge cancels hearing for Trump’s Pennsylvania election case

A federal judge on Wednesday canceled a planned evidentiary hearing on President Trump’s challenge to Joe Biden’s win in Pennsylvania.

Judge Matthew Brann instead gave the Trump campaign until 5 p.m. to respond to a defense motion to dismiss the case, according to an order posted online.

Brann also set the same deadline for the campaign to file new motions seeking a preliminary injunction to block certification of the election results and permission to amend its suit for a second time.

The order came a day after Brann heard about four hours of oral arguments on Tuesday from lawyers including former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who took over Trump’s case after a series of other lawyers bailed out.

Giuliani, a former Manhattan US attorney, appeared rusty during his first appearance in federal court in about three decades, at one point mistaking Brann for another judge who earlier rejected a different suit filed by the campaign, according to The Associated Press.

Brann also noted that Trump’s suit was “alleging that the two individual plaintiffs were denied the right to vote” while “asking this court to invalidate more than 6.8 million votes, thereby disenfranchising every single voter in the commonwealth,” CNN reported.

In addition to canceling the hearing that had been set for Thursday, Brann’s order denied a request from Trump campaign lawyer Linda Kerns to withdraw from the case.

Kerns didn’t offer a reason when she filed the motion on Monday but it came hours after she claimed to have received an “abusive voicemail” from a lawyer at an opposing firm.

Kerns also said she’d been subjected to “continuous harassment in the form of abusive emails, phone calls, physical and economic threats, and even accusations of treason — all for representing the President of the United States’ campaign in this litigation.”
