I was visiting a friend yesterday, and she’d found a 1989 letter in an unknown language in a secondhand book. Investigation time! The letter was sent from Latvia to Lithuania, so after some testing we found out that it was written in Lithuanian, though the handwriting was still tough to decipher.
The beginning part was very interesting, which is why we kept going with the translation. The guy writing the letter (we don’t get his name, the letter is unsigned) writes to Loreta. And Loreta has gotten a letter from a “mysterious Iranian militant” who once lived in Lithuania, but now lives in a smallish city in Latvia, presumably someone both people know. Then our writer thanks Loreta for sending him a letter, and (as a joke?) says that it’s a very noble gesture, although he is “very worthy of it”. She’s apparently asked him a question about what tanks look like, ‘cause he responds that he can’t remember a lot, except tanks are made of green metal, and that anyway it’s not like all tanks look alike. Then he complains about the food at the place he’s staying, since the only thing he can really get is noodles. Then he talks about how, every night, he sits and listens to the sea and birds while smoking.
After that, however, we have no idea what the rest of it means. We’re lacking context, so the sentences make no sense, and it was also transcribed from handwriting, so there might be typos. Ack.
