民進黨總統初選協調下周五（12日）截止，蔡總統與前行政院長賴清德隔空喊話，火藥味十足。蔡昨上午先是表態傾全力配合協調小組，但稍晚傳出蔡說，「我是現任總統，不可能和我的行政院長在公開場合進行政見辯論。」且明白拒絕按遊戲規畫進行黨內初選；賴清德則兩度表明，能承受外在攻擊，將堅持走完初選程序。蔡賴各有堅持，協調小組工作顯已陷僵局。

總統蔡英文9日上午召開記者會，宣示總統黨內初選的態度之後，行政院長賴清德也隨即在下午3時召開記者會回應。賴清德正面回擊蔡英文，他強調自己堅決不退，也喊話蔡英文，如果初選由他勝出，請小英支持他。
賴清德強調，他要打一場典範級的選戰，如果由蔡英文取得初選勝利，他一定支持蔡英文，但如果最後由他在初選勝出，也請蔡英文同樣的支持他。
蔡英文上午11時15分於總統府3樓虹廳舉行記者會，除說明對初選的態度，並澄清協調期間各種不實的傳聞。她在會中強調，她領導民進黨超過10年，最大期待就是團結，並且可以勝選，怯戰不是她的風格。
蔡英文也提醒，打過初選都知道，初選會造成的問題，不是只有候選人之間，還有支持者間的問題，忘了不是只要打初選，還要大選；她進一步指出，在昨天會談中，她也告訴大家，這一局我們要問，這局要誰退、還是要合作，如何合作是我們選項，那全黨就要傾全力走合作的方向，如果我們相信合作才是勝選最大可能性，大家就要往這方向走。
