In fact, I still haven't found it. カリーベis referenced again a few pages later(pic related), and not a once after, not even in the next volume (I think, I just glanced through it). The upside of that is that I have researched a lot about the Lancadon people and mayan language, se ai got some new info for you.
Translation Notes
ERRATA: First translated as Hachiwinick, the name Chan K'in and Kayun use to refer to themselves is actually Hach Winik. In their own language it means "real people". Although the lancadon are considered their own ethnic group today, they are actually conposed of numerous remnant mayan groups who wanted to keep their old traditions intact, and as a result their own yucatec mayan language is different from the "official".
The Lacandon Jungle (Spanish: Selva Lacandona) is an area of rainforest which stretches from Chiapas, Mexico, into Honduras and into the southern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. The heart of this rainforest is located in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas near the border with Guatemala in the Montañas del Oriente region of the state. The Lacandon is still the largest montane rainforest in North America and one of the last ones left large enough to support jaguars. The Lacandon in Chiapas is also home to a number of important Mayan archeological sites including Palenque, Yaxchilan and Bonampak, with numerous smaller sites which remain partially or fully unexcavated. This rainforest, especially the area inside the Biosphere Reserve, is a source of political tension, pitting the EZLN or Zapatistas and their indigenous allies who want to farm the land against international environmental groups and the Lacandon Maya, the original indigenous group of the area and the one that holds the title to most of the lands in Montes Azures
Chan K'in was a real person: Born in 1900, he was the last t'o'ohil (great one; spiritual leader; guardian of tradition; storyteller) of the Lancadon, the community's chief consultant in matters such as history, mythology, cosmology, the gods, the protocol of rituals, song and dream interpretation. He was responsible for keeping the lancadon's traditions as they came in more contact with foreign cultures. Chan K'in died in 1996. In the second pic that's him and one of his wives, Koh.

Proofreader here. People can get pretty wound up about being credited for translating, which is the sort of internet drama that prevents scanlation groups from taking it easy. To avoid all that, I don't read other translations until our own is finished, but the open nature of translating on an imageboard means that people can post whatever they want, including other peoples' translations.
If someone wants to claim credit for their work, they'll have to ask for it directly so we can be clear about attribution. That's what was done for Kouya ni Kemono Doukokusu with Sparrow's typesetting work, and the same would apply here. I'd like to know how the translator and typesetter want to handle this issue as well.

The other problem with Kanzaki's note is that several obvious kanji have been replaced with hiragana, which is a standard gag for poor writing ability. Only replacing one misspelled word wouldn't get this across.

TL here. Technically the bunker is a better site, for sure. But my reason for moving was because the community was mostly moving back. Not only /animu/'s userbase, but other boards as well. And since I got into translation for both my own sake (I really wantto learn the language) and to give to other anons what they want to read, moving to a higher traffic place seemed like the best idea.
But I don't want to act like I own the team or anything like that. If the proofreader and typesetter(s) find the current state of 8kun to be too bad, we can move back. On the name "Metzabok": Although the japanese word literally translates to Metzabok, which is the name of a certain geographical region in the Lacandon Forest (Chiapas, Mexico) the god it refers to is actually called Mensabak. On chapter 28, page 8, the correct name was mentioned when romanized. I'm not sure if calling it "metzabok" was a mistake on the author's part, or if there's no distinction between the two names in japanese in the first place.
Chacmool: Also spelled "chac-mool" is the term used to refer to a particular form of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican sculpture depicting a reclining figure with its head facing 90 degrees from the front, supporting itself on its elbows and supporting a bowl or a disk upon its stomach. These figures possibly symbolised slain warriors carrying offerings to the gods; the bowl upon the chest was used to hold sacrificial offerings, including pulque, tamales, tortillas, tobacco, turkeys, feathers and incense. In an Aztec example the receptacle is a cuauhxicalli (a stone bowl to receive sacrificed human hearts). Chacmools were often associated with sacrificial stones or thrones. Chan K'in's fifth wife: The real Chan K'in actually only had four wives, with his fourth one not looking all that younger than him, actually. Adding a fifth wife might have been Baku's way of distancing his character from the real person.
"Dream like the jaguar": I haven't found a single mayan expression for "good night" that mentions jaguars or dreams directly. Instead, I found the Tz’utujil Mayan
expressions "xok aaq’a’" (pronounced shok-aak-ah) meaning "good night", and "na’an" (pronounced nah-an) for "good bye" (http://www.snailadventures.com/tzutujil-mayan-language/). The furigana above that sentence spells イルキン•バラーム, "irukin baraamu", literally. As the jaguar is quite at home in the nighttime, it is believed to be part of the underworld; thus, "Maya gods with jaguar attributes or garments are underworld gods" (Benson 1998:64). Vajra's form isn't entirely bovine. At the time I was designing the Dokkaku soldiers, I didn't intend to make them straight into cow-man, bird-man, rabbit-man and the like. They are the result or random genetic shuffling, and should only remotely resemble animals. That's the feeling I wanted to evoke. I was worried that looking too much like a bovine would make him look cutesy. But now I'm not entirely sure that might have been the case.
Incidentally, I watched a documentary some time ago. In it a group of lions attacked some african buffaloes, and managed to capture one of their calves. Naturally, they intended to eat it. But suddenly, an enormous Nile crocodile creeped out of the river and snatched their prey. The lions were confused at first, but soon they were each respectively biting into the calf's head and rear. The situation had become a fierce tug of war. On that note, a crocodile's biting strength can reach about 1 ton. Nevertheless, the crocodile gave up, released its prey and returned to the river.
But before anyone noticed, the buffalo herd had returned, surrounding the lions. Once the lion's battle formation was broken, they were no match for the buffaloes. These immediately started to dispense kicks, and the lions soon ran away as they started getting hit. Then, a surprising scene took place. That buffalo calf that was believed to be dead suddenly stood up and started walking as if nothing had happened, and was soon following its mother.
Buffaloes are amazing. There's no mistake they are among the strongest mammals, alongside elephants and hippopotamus. I'm sorry for ever doubting you, Vajra-san.

Going by prior editing work for the series they don't seem to require heavy skill (no large SFX changed, most text just needs white-out, etc.) and I'm fine with either the cleaning or typesetting depending who wants what. Whoever is typesetting ideally uses the same fonts though. An /animu/ collection would probably be a good idea there.

It's in volume 7.
Unfortunately I won't know any font names. What I can tell from observation is that Sparrow used mainly 3 fonts:
One "normal" for most speech bubbles
One for screaming. See first pic ("UWAAA")
And one for the rispy voice of the Dokkaku soldiers (that's how the genetically altered soldiers are called.). Makura (the monkey girl, second pic) is the only exception, as her voice soudns normal.
Other than that, sfx and animal cries saw some variation too.
Since we don't know which fonts those are, I'll leave it up to you to use something you might find equally suitable.
Also, we rarely translate out-of-bubble sfx. And when we do, we leave it as an out-of-panel translation. That eases the redrawing task. Redrawing has been most necessary for out-of-bubble speech that overlaps with some art, which is rare, and making some spread pages' union more seamless (like fourth pic)

Omigewdness: Makura's like and the face she makes later, pressing on her cheeks with her hands, is a reference to the character Pinoko from the manga and anime "Black Jack". Pinoko is Dr. Black Jack's assistant and her main form of comic relief is yelling アッチョンブリケ(Acchonburike)—a phrase that has no real meaning but taken as a rough equivalent to "Oh my goodness!" The other two main fonts used seem to be "Anime Ace BB" for the standard speech, and "DeathRattle BB" for screaming, both of which being free. A note to anyone else curious about reverse searching fonts, make sure the text is flat horizontal, not warped, and ideally has space between the characters as opposed to bleeding into itself. Even after pulling an exclamation sample from another page (because the one above had a warp on it), reverse searching still couldn't find anything, because it kept trying to group multiple letters as single characters. I wound up finding it after manually searching for manga suitable fonts and comparing between examples.
Using these pages as tests since they're the first with regular text (first page of the chapter needs the area for the title cleared, and the second and third are a two page spread that would need stitching and/or redrawing down the center). As a question, how do have you guys been handling larger words that normally would break the confines of the speech bubble? At the original size I tried here (5 pt) the likes of "surrounded," went out of the bounds in trying to keep it on the same line, as does "Hijikata" at a 6 bold (as the kanji for the name are noticeably stronger than the other text on the page). Do you guys find it preferable to break and hyphenate such words while sticking with the same size, reduce the font size for the bubble so it fits (what I did for "surrounded"), or just leave it as is and stroke it so it pops (as with the name)? Also, what about font size in general? Do you guys want it consistent between areas of the same type like the Japanese text is, or is adjusting to better fit each bubble better? Using some of the pages posted in the share thread on /v/, it seems like the latter's what's been done before, but I'd probably have to compare with the Japanese pages to know for sure.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind going forward. I'd considered stroking the "surrounded," at it's original 5 pt as well, but it felt like it was extending too far even without it, especially into the nearby hair centered at the larger size. Few questions: Is it alright to slightly rephrase things so it flows or lays out better? For instance, in the transcript for page 10, wording the first line in panel three as "Well, that's a tricky subject, really." feels like it would conform better with the bubble than "Well, that's a tricky subject, actually." Alright, I'll still try to use such sparingly though. Got through to page 22 of the transcript for initial insertion tonight. Hopefully that's not too slow a start. Still need translations for the sound effects though, and some pages' text is comprised solely of those. Not sure if you guys want to handle providing them too, or if I should just try looking them up somewhere. Page 1 of the chapter needs the area for the chapter subtitle redrawn or cleared (whatever you want to call placing more background over the kanji). Pages 2 and 3, and 18 and 19, need stitching/redrawing if you want to have them as two page spreads. I'd been thinking more along the lines of something similar to an alignment shift. Will try some stuff out for it later (I'm usually apt to be around evening and nights) and see how it turns out. First thing's just getting all the text in there.

For the record (just saying to be clear for whoever gives it a go if they're not familiar), as to the title, I specifically mean the area of the specific name. Looking at how a previous chapter as done, the "Act [X]:" is maintained as is, but the English name after it is inserted in place of the Japanese one. Without redrawing the background over the kanji adequately, or severely bloating the stroke around the English text, you'd get a mess like the second picture.
I also did try giving the potential for stitching a go, at least for 2 and 3, but without fucking with the page sizes, moving one up or down on the canvas by a few pixels, you can get about half to align right, while the other half starts getting off. Could be better to downscale one side, but that might throw other things off, and it's not really a set of images you could easily make up the difference in white space. Just my observations.

Technically, while it can fit as is like that, the shape of the bubbles becomes awkward as the space allotted for the contents feels off, at least if you ask me. And while you could break it up into multiple horizontal text frames, retaining the proper baseline height while editing the horizontal positioning of various lines to better make use of said framing space, the overall text structure of the bubble looks uglier for it because the alignment ceases to be carried properly throughout. Granted, I know sometimes there might not be much choice in terms of either, but I'd rather avoid that here.
I'll work on reviewing positioning and fonts more this evening, now that all the text is overlaid.

I've only been reading manga for a few months but I'm really curious about something, what's with the extreme overuse of 'moreover' by many groups?
It's a really awkward and stilted word to use in a conversation (as opposed to in writing) yet I've read some stuff where it's used multiple times every single chapter.
Is it the translation of some commonly used Japanese word that is perfectly normal to constantly repeat in every day conversations?
Also why are some groups so trash that they can't even get a person with at least passable English to proofread their stuff? You'd think after spending the effort to translate something, least they could do is have someone skim over it to fix typos and grammar issues. Something I've been noticing more myself of late. It's as if whoever is doing the English scripts don't even write them in a text editor first, and go straight to their choice of image editing program instead, thus not catching typos. Or when clearly unedited panels have their text so badly mangled, I get left wondering if the translator even knows English to begin with, on account of stuff like the below even being deemed "rough draft" quality:

>"Eh? And what did they do? Was a cosplayer and suddenly quitted?"
>"That’s sound like a manga…"
And then there's cases where whoever's doing a manga's typesetting doesn't even bother to blank all the solid bubbles where the English text is going to be, nor do they or anyone else they might be working with catch it in proofreading before release. So even if the script is decent, the presentation can still be trash.
There's a process that absolutely should be followed, but I suspect that some groups treat such as more of a suggestion than guidelines, because it's quicker to put out when you skip steps. Similarly annoyed by modern "toss it in anywhere" procedure for screencapping threads on imageboards the last seven years or so. Properly mimicing thread flow takes more time and planning, but looks much better visually and is easier to follow.

I want to go further than this. The big one: NEVER delete source files because chances are you will have to fix things. Relatedly, always save to your image editor's "project" format. For Photoshop that is PSD, for GIMP it is XCF and Krita is KRA. From there export to whatever works best for distribution (see further).

Folder per-chapter. raw/ folder for original images and any relevant original and amended scripts, read-only. / folder for source images and then tmp/ for exporting them, and then final/ for final render.

Monochrome should be exported to indexed PNG, and colour to JPEG, I typically go with 95 quality. If the raws are huge dimension-wise they should also be scaled to something more reasonable for distribution. As an example for the Neptunia work:

>XCF files with layering and edits and everything 2GB
>Exported as 33% scale JPEG 95 is about 50MB
There is a useful GIMP plug-in for batch exporting that I use. Photoshop probably has some way of doing it too.

Also one thing I could stand to be less weak on is consistency. That's mostly font-related since I usually need to change the line spacing for specific ones to not be stupid.
