Translation Notes

Climb Mount Niitaka 1208: On December 2, 1941 (Tokyo Time,) a coded message, ‘Niitakayama Nobore 1208’ (“Climb Mount Niitaka 1208”) was sent to all Imperial Japanese Navy units. Receiving this signal Vice Admiral Nagumo Chuichi opened a set of Top Secret documents, which told him, and those that opened the same order throughout the fleet, that on December 8 (the 7th on the Pearl Harbor side of the International Date Line) Japan would be going to war. At 3952 meters, Niitaka was the highest peak in the japanese empire, located in the colony of Taiwan. To the chinese it's known as Yushan, or Jade Mountain.

Sorry for the delay, will have the roughs for 50 up this evening/night, after I compile the usual log to post with them. In the meantime though, I do want to ask if you guys mind if we could use a different image of Pinoko for the notes page. The one given is pretty artifacted, and while I suppose it could be downscaled to reduce that, doing some reverse image searching myself to try to find a better one, by my estimate the original was a 120x120 icon, so anything bigger than that’s is still not going to look particularly sharp. See the text quality on the left vs the image quality on the right.

Or perhaps it’s only annoying to me, I don’t know.

Went digging through the manga, but it seems like the panels and pages are just too small to be all that useful for capping out of. Found a piece of fan art that might be workable though (and of which I'll provide artist credit in the image caption for), if you guys consider it acceptable to use versus official art.

“Welcome back” works a bit better with the space than just “welcome” in panel 1. Reversing the order of “by the way” and “they are delicious” makes the line sound a bit more natural, but maybe it’s just me.

Site took like five minutes just to catch up with that post. So it might take me a little to get the whole thing up.

>p_041

The line in the first bubble for panel 3 reads a bit oddly. “It’s not even two under two centimeters is size, but if it were to explode,” seems better, but that’s just me. “for a little longer” replaced with “for a it longer” for space.

>p_042

“Something along that line.” works better with the space in the first panel. “Now,” added to panel 4 so the text fits the shape a bit better.

>p_043

“pin!” to “pins!” as there’s two of them he winds up using.

>p_044

“Your performance was amazing. That takes a lot of guts.” has a hard time fitting. Reworded to “An amazing performance like that takes a lot of guts”, but if that’s straying too far, we get redo it. Reworded Makura’s lines slightly in panel 3. “served in” feels more natural for Gin to say, given the context. “enjoy” works better with the space in panel 5 than “like”. Makura’s aside in the same panel is hard to work with using the space allotted, even at a 2.5 font size. I suppose the bubble could easily be drawn just with a white brush tool if need be, but for now I have it as “I know I’m one to talk, but…”

>p_045

Added some quotation marks in panel 1, as Makura’s referring to language. “It won…” changed to “it wo…” to better distinguish Chan K’in pausing in the middle of a word, as opposed to sounding like he completed one already. Added a few words in the last bubble on the page to use the space better.

>p_047

Panel 4: “It's also useless to hold regrets.” to “and regrets are useless to hold on to.” “New regrets are born of the latter": works with the bubble shape a bit better.

>p_048

Out of curiosity, is Mikado actually saying “novelist” as in English, and not “novelista”, considering they’re in Mexico? I can see the text is still the vertical they use for regular Japanese in this manga, but thought I'd ask.

The bald grunt’s line in the first bubble feels rather tight, but I’m not sure if there’s necessarily a way to word it that won’t be, unless going rather informal (“no eating them”), but I’m not sure if that fits the tone or language he’s speaking.

The rewording looks good and reads well. Makura's line is cramped but readable, at least to me.

>p_048

He is in fact saying "novelista" (タ instead of ト) so switching it would be fine if you think people won't mistake it for a typo.

>p_053

The grunt is being technically polite (ですよ) but rather casual otherwise. I think it would okay to go with "Remember, no eating them, First Lieutenant."

>p_056

It's 吼え猿, which in Japanese dictionaries gets translated into the English "howling monkey" but actually refers to the howler monkey as you say. Unless the translator says otherwise, switching it wouldn't be a problem (although we used "Howling Monkey" a whole bunch up ahead, so we'll be making this switch a lot).

>>954905

It's ラヒィル! which is just some really weird scream: "Rahiirrl!" or some such. It's similar to some weird screams printed before (Gomes heard an "Ahiiru" before) but I don't think it'll be important just watch, now that I've said that it'll become really important.

I'm back home now. Better internet and coming back to my routine (sort of, limited work due to quarantine restrictions) means I'll probably get back on track now. Weird how I thought that going back to the country in these times of quarantine would mean more free time, but I had to help my parents with a bunch of stuff there and ended up being very busy instead. That and the lack of internet means I have a fuckton of catching up to do both on manga and anime too.

>although we used "Howling Monkey" a whole bunch up ahead, so we'll be making this switch a lot

I'll keep that in mind if I see any that haven't been adjusted. Though, to be fair, I'd wonder if Mikado ever encountered one prior at a zoo or something, so as a foreigner, perhaps him not quite using the standard term would still fit for him (and Nabe, being those that have used such thus far)? I know he's been to Papua New Guinea, but I forget if he's been to Mexico prior.

It was repeated in the transcript. Should something else have been there?

>you left some excess bit in the end there.

Yeah, I noticed that a few minutes before you posted. It's fixed now, along with the image positioning adjusted to the new text height.
