GS is pretty weak, outside of goblins. With better equipment it might be a different story, but as it stands, he's about on par with a mid-rank adventurer. His only real strong-point is that he knows enough shit that as a party leader, he can get a group to hit above their level; against goblins, far above their level. The best case in point being against the Goblin Lord, who might very well have wiped out the entire town (including the Silver Ranks) if it wasn't for GS.

I'm guessing that only some of them would have shovels and a shovel is basically two-handed weapon. Even a weakshit manlet fuck shit up a shovel. You are wrong about the shovel and stone age remarks, tranches needed to be dug and they did it by hand so shovels were common. When guys starting bearing down on you while you're in the trench you literally have barely any room to move and there is never just one guy but a dogpile on you and whatever poor bastards with you that have to fight them off. Unmodified bayonets sucked because they were too blunt and too long inside the trenches. They also got stuck in a guy's ribs too much, most action and kills to a bayonet's name in the first World War is killing boars.

I suppose discussing the potential hilarity of all that happening would not be met kindly here, but I will point out that GS didn't get to where he is today by having anyone protect him, yet that's exactly what he himself does. If he is remembered as a hero it won't last long as the goblins will have their resurgence once he's out of the picture and there's nothing standing between them and the humans except for the greenhorns the guild already sacrificed regularly. So in the end the goblins will reassert their dominance and it will be like GS never even existed.
