Alright, I am in dire need of space spooks, give me settings, Cthulhu Rising is alright but I want new Stuff, and more grounded on reality then Eclipse Phase and better developed than The Void. Give me your best pdf's for space horror, or write it up yourselves.

Scary Images are welcome.

Don't click the image just yet, because I need to to prove a point.

Making horror work is simple if you follow the advice of show, don't tell. For roleplaying the more apt version would be describe, don't name. For example, here's what you do when you describe:

>The creature has noticed you. While humanoid in build it resembles a demented puppet more than an actual human. Its round white body has several tumors over it that are meant to pass for shoulders and hips. From these fleshy growths spring spindly limbs that should not be able to carry its weight, yet they do. The things that are meant to pass for arms have thin, bony elbows and end in a pair of oversized white claws. The fingers sprout from it in a way that no human fingers do, tipping out in thick growths twice as wide as the base. They have no nails: instead there are fleshy grabbing pads on the inside. Its legs are just as thin as the arms, with a facsimile of human knees dividing up the legs. Instead of feet the thing as a pair of… growths resembling pointed shoes, carrying nothing like toes or claws. Its rotund head is adorned with two similar growths, resembling hair as designed by someone who only had hair described to them. More fleshy growths adorn its cheek, pulling its mouth into a smile. But it is not a smile. Its large white eyes have tiny pinpricks of pupils in them, looking at you with an empty and dead stare. "Myyyy…" it mutters hoarsely as it approaches you. You take a step back, trying to get away from this thing, but you bump into something. "Myyyy…" Turning around you see nothing there, but as you try to move you feel like you've run into an invisible wall. "Myyyyyyyy…" You desperately try to find a way around, but you run into another wall. And another. Trying to stay away from the creature you feel nothing but walls surrounding you and that thing. You realize to your horror that you're boxed in. "MyyyyyyyyYYYY!" The creature is upon you.

Now click the image and compare that to this:

You encounter a Mr. Mime, who uses Barrier to keep you from escaping.

Which one's better? The more descriptive one of course, because it makes you feel, not see.

Reading this makes me very happy, anon. Thank you.

>one of my players encountered a couple of Mime Jrs in the mountains

>both of them freeze and look at him with trepedation

>they both start slouching like he does and the player can feel something fuzzy at the back of his brain

>he looks at them closer

>wait a minute, it's just some dude and his girlfriend, why are they all the way out here?

>he tries to talk to them

>they don't speak back because they're fucking mimes

>he nearly walks back down the mountain and goes home before I mercifully have one of them fuck up and drop the disguise

Psychic mimes are great and should be included in more games.

Aw shucks, thanks anons. Here, have another one:

>You try another door. It's locked as well. You run down the hall while risking another look over your shoulder. It is still following you. It is skinny, way too skinny. Despite its delicate appearance it keeps up with you effortlessly. It walks, but the legs should not be able to move the thing that fast. They are thin, very thin, almost twiglike in appearance. It was no feet either; the legs end in points that would not allow it to stand. But not only does it maintain balance, it remains upright and moving. Despite its speed you do not hear the sound of footsteps coming from it. It does not look like the legs actually touch the floor: it is almost as if it is floating, staying away from the vulgar base earth as this horrifying angelical being moves across it. More worrying is the pale white skin that hangs around its lower body, making a horrifying and inhuman flapping noise as it moves. If it is skin of course: it could very well be flesh or some kind of hair. Its arms were equally thin and long, almost tentacle-like with no visible joints on them. Instead of the pale skin they are of a natural green color. That is, the kind of nature that would have you die of exposure and exhaustion inside of it. Instead of hands it has that look like three talons growing from each hand in a set of thumbless appendages. It still uses them as if they were akin to hands; with gestures of them doors slam shut, windows bar themselves and direct you in one possible direction. The same green grows around its head, covering part of its pair of way too large eyes. It almost looks like hair, but it also looks like something had attached itself to the creature's head, which was supported by a neck that is way too thin for a skull of that size. You cannot see a mouth on the creature, but you do hear it speak. Or at least you think you do. Stop running. This will help you. Well screw that; you already emptied your gun at the thing but it just caught the bullets with its mind. You're not even sure if you can kill the thing without taking it by surprise. It looks like someone at least tried it: an unnatural crimson growth stuck out of it as if someone had driven a blade through its back. The fact that the creature seems unimpeded by this, not to mention alive, kind of hints at the grim fate of whoever tried that. You make your way into a room. It's a dead end. You turn around but the creature is already there. The door shuts behind it. An invisible force pushes you against the wall behind you. You try to kick and scream, but you lost control over your body. The creature draws near. This will make it all better. you hear the creature say, but still you can see no mouth, even form this close. It places its appendages against the sides of your head. Your body stays where it is, but you can feel your mind fall.

This one's a bit easier, but can still be rather horrifying.

This manga is one of the creepiest things I have ever read.

Uzumaki

http://www.mangareader.net/uzumaki

All the stories are about how the spiral shape is evil and starts twisting the world up, literally. That probably doesn't sound scary but it is real good. I browsed it for a moment then accidentally killed the whole book in one sitting. To borrow a phrase from Lovecraft, it's some unwholesome geometry.

Then I got my hands on everything Junji Ito. Here's a couple more:

Army of One

Gyo

Anon, how well insulated is your bubble? How large is your social network? I, a yound lad from a incredibly rural state, have heard of this sort of shit going down through one to two degrees of connection. If the middle class is degenerate enough to watch and enjoy "Bill Nye Saves the World" or accept transsexuals as well adjusted, imagine what a woman with unlimited budget and without naysayers will do.

Thinking back on it I'm pretty sure my dad got job offers for a similar field of work when he was driving limos. I have no reason to doubt these stories, as he witnessed the tail end of George Bush's daughter's delinquent phase. Drove one of the sisters to the family sea side estate. Bitched and moaned the entire way, kept asking if there was any wine in the limo, calling her friends to complain about life. He felt a strong urge to slap her and tell her whats what. After just an hour and a half talk with grandma Bush she came a totally different person. Prim, proper, polite.

It isn't hard for me to imagine a girl that never got slapped into shape funding these Gomorrahs.

The manga was originally pretty dark, but got lighter with the card game being more focused on.

Also- FUCK the Dunwich Horror. Hated fighting that fuck in Mansions of Madness.

And yeah, I'm aiming to write big monsters as bosses. Not that these sort of campaigns shouldn't build up sanity loss via what player characters find and read.

that is kind of a big problem with a lot of people in general when it comes to lovecraft. You can show them a shoggoth or something and they just go, "that isn't scary." but they never really put themselves mentally into a situation where they deal with one face to face.

People need to get some proper perspective when encountering anything, in any game, and any genre.

Technically I can just approach any horror or dire situation in an apathetic way, because I know it isn't real. But you need to make it real in your mind.

What you need to do is let them hear and know that the nameless monster is near without telling them what it is. Keep it vague and maybe have them find the remains of its last meal before it decides to attack them from the shadows with a long tendril covered in mouthed suckers.

I once had the players get pursued by a hag who abducted and ate children in a Call of Cthulhu game. They never actually saw her because she attacked them with her long, rope-like, fingers that ended in venomous snakes. She would always take control of people and have them write messages to the players in blood, and hide under the muck of the swamp she lived in to pursue them.

The game ended up finishing when they found the hag's beating heart inside of a mason jar in a cave and they never even stopped to look at her corpse on there way out. That in my opinion was a good example of horror in a Call of Cthulhu game, even if the players goofed around and did stupid shit.

Yeah. I am just referring to players actually not getting into the moment with their imaginations.

You can do everything right, but if the players don't place themselves in the right mindset and the correct perspective then they won't react.

It is a 2 way street. They need to do their part. Personally, if I don't put myself into the correct mindset as the player, then there is literally nothing you can say that would give any sense of urgency or creepiness.

I am just talking about those people that approach any sort of fictional horror from their perspective in the real world instead of trying to put themselves in the shoes of someone actually witnessing those things.

I’d recommend the quite recent film ‘The Void’ to everyone who loves John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’. The practical effects work is top notch – some of the best effects I have seen in a horror film in ages. The weakest part of the film is sadly the characters, and the clichéed characters types. Still, it is well worth a watch, even if only for the beautiful effects work & Lovecraftian themes. It is perhaps the most Lovecraftian horror film that is not directly based on a Lovecraft story since the aforementioned ‘The Thing’.

Also, something from my own commonplace book, where I write down interesting facts, story ideas, character ideas, &c.:

The Aestivation hypothesis – A theory put forth to explain the Fermi question (‘Where are they?’ referring to extraterrestrial life). It theorises that alien life is ‘sleeping’, awaiting a remote future when it is more favourable to exploit the resources of the universe.

Jamesian ghost-stories – According to M. R. James, the story must “put the reader into the position of saying to himself,'‘If I’m not very careful, something of this kind may happened to me!’”. He also perfected the technique of narrating supernatural events thru implication & suggestion, letting the reader fill in the blanks, & focusing on the mundane details of his settings & characters in order to throw the horrific & bizarre elements into greater relief. “Two ingredients most valuable in the concocting of a ghost story are, to me, the atmosphere and the nicely managed crescendo. … Let us, then, be introduced to the actors in a placid way; let us see them going about going about their ordinary business, undisturbed by foreboding, pleased with their surroundings; and into this calm environment let the ominous thing put out its head, unobtrusively at first, and then more insistently, until it holds the stage.” & “Since the things which the ghost can effectively do are very limited in number, ranging about death and madness and the discovery of secrets, the setting seems to me all important, since in it there is the greatest opportunity for variety.”“Setting or environment, then, is to me a principal point, and the more readily appreciable the setting is to the ordinary reader the better. The other essential is that our ghost should make himself felt by gradual stirrings diffusing an atmosphere of uneasiness before the final flash or stab at horror.” & “Roughly speaking, the ghost should be a contemporary of the seer.”“But there are exceptions to every rule. … And in any case there must be ordinary level-headed modern persons – Horatios – on the scene, such as the detective needs his Watson or his Hastings to play the part of the lay observer.”

Essays by M. R. James:

Ghosts – Treat them Gently!: http://archive.is/zZnjm

Stories I Have Tried To Write: https://archive.is/CCCxg

“For where the older stock ghosts were pale and stately, and apprehended chiefly through the sense of sight, the average James ghost is lean, dwarfish, and hairy — a sluggish, hellish, night-abomination midway betwixt beast and man — and usually touched before it is seen.”

— “Supernatural Horror in Literature” by H. P. Lovecraft: http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/essays/shil.aspx

Fans of Lovecraft’s monsters will probably enjoy M. R. James’ ‘The Treasure of Abbot Thomas’ the most, along with ‘Count Magnus’. All of James’ stories are well worth a read though IMO.

Neat!

At first I suspected it would be like ‘Martin’s Close’, with the ghost hiding in the cupboard, then rushing out and out of sight. The windows & doors disappearing reminded me of James’ ‘Number 13’.

The tea-scene was indeed unsettling for a cartoon.

The ending was a bit ambiguous though, Jack stated that he couldn’t save her family, yet they meet & embrace before cutting to end credits.

I interpreted that as him saving their souls.

It's somewhat amusing to me how a purebred action cartoon can pull off classic and genuinely disquieting horror better than a hundred "spooky" episodes in its brethren before or since.

Oh, by the way, the Beast/Demon's design reminds me of a classic horror film: Curse of the Demon, I think it was called. Ever seen that one? Kinda cheesy monster suit/puppet, eerie sound and atmosphere.

The film was very entertaining. There is something but these older horror films that sets them apart from recent horror.

I had a look at the runes in the film to see what it said, being very interested in runes, but sadly it is just a hodgepodge of runes, apparently the Anglo-Saxon runes – along with one or two runes that I don’t recognize at all.

Two Lovecraftian horror films that don’t get nearly enough love:

The Haunted Palace from 1963 starring Vincent Price, Lon Chaney Jr. & Debra Paget, directed by Roger Corman. This is apparently the first feature-length film based on a Lovecraft story (‘The Case of Charles Dexter Ward’ with a hint of ‘The Shadow Over Innsmouth’). Great atmosphere and Vincent is amazing as always.

Castle Freak from 1995, starring Jeffrey Combs & Barbara Crampton, directed by Stuart Gordon. This is arguably the best horror film from the ’90s. A very dark and bleak film that is (very) loosely based on HPL’s ‘The Outsider’. Great performances, and amazing make-up effects on the titular ‘freak’.

>SO! Here's my question. If that little kid in "At Your Door" can have his mind's eye opened, what about the players? If satori or gnosis or whatever are achievable in CoC, what is the effect, and what's the mechanic? I've been considering a limited crossover with Kult—I kind of like the Mental Balance thing vs SAN, and it allows for Enlightenment both through descending into darkness (a la Steven Alzis) and through Ascension into light (which ought to be just as terrible, in its own way). Not that I want the players to become "as gods". But gaining some insight into the true nature of the universe, and gaining some limited powers thereby, could be interesting.

The end result of such a path should be godhood, at least to Noden's level. "The Crawling Chaos" has the last inhabitants of Earth appear as classical gods crossed slightly with angels of the Old Testament manner, ambivalent at worst and beneficient in nature.

I love that tale for so many reasons. First, darkness is reduced to its most malignant, vaguest, and dangerous form. Erosion, entropy, manifest. Secondly it shows light victorious, if only in retreat, and a complete victory over those mind swapping time jumping beetle bastards. Humanity prevails.

Hellstar Remina.

Most of Ito's work.

Berserk/Pulla Magica Madoka, somewhat.

Anime/manga do not lend themselves well to horror however because otakus hate that and they especially hate something as cold and chilling as existential horror. In fact, I don't think existential horror ever really hit Japan like it did the West. Likely due to their culture.

The main problem with Lovecraftian horror is that it is highly opposite to the Japanese concept of Fighting Spirit. The Japanese only really get Lovecraftian if you look into things like Noroi: The Curse, Occult, Cult, The Ring movies and The Grudge movies.

Anything to do with kegare, araya-shiki, tatarigami or onryo is pretty Lovecraftian tho. Especially if you tie in the abortion/bastard connection kegare has with unwanted/abandoned humans that were an accident and are hated by their creators.

Just watched this, was a really good movie. If you know Lovecraftian stuff, you'll definitely guess a fair amount of the plot but watching it play out is rewarding. It felt really similar to an RPG campaign, actually. The plot gets started really quickly and the exposition is clunky in the beginning but I prefer that to having to watch boring shit about 'happier times'.

>>339366

My nig. Haven't seen From Beyond yet, will have to check it out.

The Stranger Things meme is annoying and the show is fine but I'm hoping we'll get some more Lovecraft-type media out of the craze and people aren't just all carried away by the relentless advertising. 80's seems like a popular time period for this genre. Wish they would do a more 1920's type of movie. Pretty clear what Lovecraft had been inspired by, Materialistic Atheism was on the rise along with the occult and directly after WW1.

Taking two parts of discordant ideals and jamming them together can generate some awesome horror. In this case, it's the 'reaching the beyond' along with 'humanity isn't hardly a blip'. It's like an uncanny valley for settings.

Sleep paralysis tends to happen when you're really stressed out, ussually when you know there's like a time limit to your stuff (such as finishing a project that's due in hours or studying for an important test).

I've had them many times. There are different kinds of sleep paralysis, most of them are mild to spooky (such as the one that guy had) but the incubus type is fucking horrifying.

The name's due to a bunch of facts:

First because you feel a dreadful presence in your room, looking at you as you're paralized on your bed.

Second because you hear and see a horrible figure (which is literally a physical embodiment of your fears, so it ain't that good to look at).

And third because youphysically feel something pressing against your chest and taking the breathe out of you

A while ago, yeah. Essentially when you're so stressed out and tired, your brain does some stupid shit and you start dreaming while awake. So you get hallucinations which pretty much feel like reality to you.

Similar shit is when you have vivid dreams (I don't know the proper name), where you pretty much are aware what's going on, but are utterly unable to change shit. Where you're stuck inside a dream, but somehow feel completely awake. Combine that shit with stress, and you get insane horror scenarios (one I had involved a New England cannibal cult, which pretty much sacrificed people on a daily basis to some earth god in an elaborate play, or finding a tree which grew on a mountain of undying corpses, or more recently, being forced to dig through my own flesh unless I want to be thrown into a deep fryer like some girl with my death being broadcast over the internet).

 No.341327

File: 9f5e9bab51c7b8a⋯.png (857.09 KB,679x879,679:879,DGeldersign.png)

So, the Delta Green Handler's Guide includes a souped-up version of the Elder Sign which can drain the POW of [a significant portion of] Unnatural creatures up to 100m, and drains Willpower up to 10km away.

The POW drain is ultimately lethal to anything except an honest-to-Azathoth Great Old One if uninterrupted, and even the WP drain will eventually banish/destroy most forms of nasties. Oh, and all rituals automatically fail within that 10km radius.

The investigator or agent wishing to take advantage of this ritual may perform it for the low, low price of 100 POW. 2 POW must come from the caster, but the rest may be harvested from human sacrifices over a 24-hour period. Sanity cost is 1d10, plus whatever the keeper feels appropriate for mass murder.

Even acknowledging the obvious personal costs, loss of life, and other practical challenges inherent in this ritual, it's still an alarmingly effective countermeasure against the Mythos, as-written. I wouldn't be surprised if an agent, or even a cell of agents, decided that it was worth the costs. A human averages 10 POW (according to the Agent's Handbook), but as one of my players pointed out, you could potentially minimize or even eliminate the loss of innocent life by using captured cultists in your sacrifice (as they tend towards higher-than-average POW).

So, /tg/, let's suppose that a particularly unscrupulous and single-minded cell of Delta Green agents (or any anti-Mythos organisation, conceivably) came into possession of a copy of this ritual and decided to attempt to use it to the greatest effect possible. You've got a 100m radius area acting like a psychic blender to most GOO-aligned mythos entities that happen to be trapped within it, and a 10km radius area total in which any residing mythos entities will be forced to relocate, retaliate or perish/disappear in a matter of days.

Leave it in the middle of a major population center (conventionally guarded from sabotage by human cultists and similar threats, of course), and you've already effectively designated a zone free from many forms of unnatural infestation (with the probable exceptions of ghouls, most aliens, and whatever else the Keeper decides is exempt). If you had the manpower and the determination, you could even string a few of these together, or keep them in transit to discourage most uglies from settling down in any one place for too long.

Obviously, any competent Keeper will find plenty of ways to punish any Delta Green agents who rely too much on rituals and magic, and sooner or later you're going to attract some really unwanted attention, but all that aside, how would a rogue DG cell or other party best make use of one or more of these overcharged Elder Signs in order to strike back at the darkness?

>two dozen human sacrifices to fuck with magic?

Since stats average at about ten for an ordinary adult, then it's closer to ten human sacrifices. Potentially fewer, if you can incapacitate some cult members for the purpose (or artists, musicians and authors, apparently, according to the generic NPC reference sheet).

It's still no small deal, of course, and you're right about it being better for a corrupted antagonist, or even the mad scheme of a SAN 0 Delta Green agent. I don't think a party of Delta Green players would take it this far on their own, but it's fun to speculate.

It was in the pale garden of Zais;

The mist-shrouded gardens of Zais,

Where blossoms the white naphalot,

The redolent herald of midnight.

There slumber the still lakes of crystal,

And streamlets that flow without murm'ring;

Smooth streamlets from caverns of Kathos

Where broodth the calm spirits of twilight.

And over the lakes and the streamlets

Are bridges of pure alabaster,

White bridges all cunningly carven

With figures of fairies and daemons.

Here glimmer strange suns and strange planets,

And strange is the crescent Bnapis

That sets 'yond the ivy-grown ramparts

Where thicken the dusk of the evening.

Here fall the white vapours of Yabon;

And here in the swirl of vapours

I saw the divine Nathicana;

The garlanded, white Nathicana;

The slow-eyed, red-lipped Nathicana;

The silver-voiced, sweet Nathicana;

The pale-rob'd, belov'd Nathicana

And ever was she my beloved,

From ages when time was unfashioned

Now anything fashion'd but Yabon.

And here dwelt we ever and ever,

The innocent children of Zais,

At peace in the paths and the arbours,

White-crowned with the blest nephalote.

How oft would we float in the twilight

O'er flow'r-cover'd pastures and hillsides

All white with the lowly astalthon;

The lowly yet lovely astalthon,

And dream in a world made of dreaming

The dreams that are fairer than Aidenn;

Bright dreams that are truer than reason!

So dreamed and so lov'd we thro' ages,

Till came the cursed season of Dzannin;

The daemon-damn'd season of Dzannin;

When red shone the suns and the planets,

And red leamed the crescent Banapis,

And red fell the vapours of Yabon.

Then redden'd the blossoms and streamlets

And lakes that lay under the bridges,

And even the calm alabaster

glowed pink with uncanny reflections

Till all the carv'd fairies and daemons

Leer'd redly from the backgrounds of shadow.

Now redden'd my vision, and madly

I strove to peer thro' the dense curtain

And glimpsed the divine Nathicana;

The pure, ever-pale Nathicana;

The lov'd, the unchang'd Nathicana.

But vortex on vortex of madness

Beclouded my labouring vision;

My damnable, reddening vision

That built a new world for my seeing;

A new world of redness and darkness,

A horrible coma call'd living

So now in this coma call'd living

I view the bright phantons of beauty;

The false hollow phantoms of beauty

That cloak all the evils of Dzannin.

I view them with infinite longing,

So like do they seem to my lov'd one:

Yet foul for their eyes shines their evil;

Their cruel and pitiless evil,

More evil than Thaphron and Latgoz,

Twice ill fro its gorgeous concealment.

And only in slumbers of midnight

Appears the lost maid Nathicana,

The pallid, the pure Nathicana

Who fades at the glance of the dreamer.

Again and again do I seek her;

I woo with deep draughts of Plathotis,

Deep draughts brew'd in wine of Astarte

And strengthen'd with tears of long weeping.

I yearn for the gardens of Zais;

The lovely, lost garden of Zais

Where blossoms the white nephalot,

The redolent herald of midnight.

The last potent draught am I brewing;

A draught that the daemons delight in;

A draught that will banish the redness;

The horrible coma call'd living.

Soon, soon, if I fail not in brewing,

The redness and madness will vanish,

And deep in the worm-people'd darkness

Will rot the base chains that have bound me.

Once more shall the gardens of Zais

Dawn white on my long-tortur'd vision,

And there midst the vapours of Yabon

Will stand the divine Nathicana;

The deathless, restor'd Nathicana

Whose like is not met with in living.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft: Nathicana

Just ran The Haunting with a new group last week. 4 friends as PC and me as keeper. First time playing CoC; we've only ever played D&D. Was the best session we've ever had.

Anyway, recently I've come into possesion of a few scenario pdf files. Including, (6e)Edge of Darkness, Deadlights, and Star on the shore. Been thinking about running Edge of Darkness but skimming through the book it doesn't seem all that great. The go to a cabin, have a scuffle with a hobo, do ritual, monster can't really fuck with you, there's a zombie. Idk, am I missing something?

You know I've seen enough Cthulhu and Lovecraft shit that I don't really see that stuff as weird anymore. So far the crab people who don't show up on cameras manage to still be mysterious but it's just not really doing it for me otherwise on the weirdness scale.

I think the issue is that octopus face and similar tentacled horrors still seem somewhat natural. Lovecraftian horrors should look more like a horrible photoshop edit, except in real life. The universe suddenly glitches out, and you're standing there looking at an exception reality threw up in your face. A thing that should not be.

If you want a good (arguably) depiction of what Lovecraftian horrors should look like, take a peak at Carpenter's "In the Mouth of Madness" movie. Where the tentacle monsters are what happens when humans come near the unspeakable entities from the Dark before God made Light - or in this case, they just read the Elder Evil's fanfiction which is so vile they become abominations against nature.

Perfectly doable the overarching theme of Lovecraft's works is that you don't ultimately really matter, but at the same time neither does anything else including the Elder Gods. The malevolence everything exudes towards Humanity goes against this theme quite a bit, Cthulhu's stuff hates Humans purely because they're in the way.

Probably missing the point here, but this is some shit I hate. So many people that emulate Lovecraft's style miss the point completely and just slap tentacles and octopodes onto everything because they think that's scary or they've only ever heard of Cthulhu. Lovecraft was about the unknown, and things being so beyond the scope of humanity that they're scary by virtue of the immense scale or implication of them. The nautical themes was just a style choice because the ocean is vast, inhospitable, unexplored (especially in his time), and scary. Boiling it down to "tentacles are weird and freaky ew" is what idiots who miss the point do, it's the most surface level interpretation possible, and boiling his own writings down to that is insulting.

Funny, I just got finished listening to the radio broadcasts. Yes, I would say the TPV is mechanically induced Lovecraftian realization of the full scope of the universe and true insignificance of man. Kind of spooky hows its used as a device of execution but thats almost what you would expect a cult/forbidden idol to do to someone tampering with what they shouldnt be.

I've played several campaigns of Delta Green and I can give you a quick rundown of some pros and cons:

PROS

>Very easy and quick to make characters

>Flexible to make characters especially if you opt to use custom occupations

>Autofire and explosives rules uses quick and interesting percentage lethality system.(pass Is instakill on most humans, fail still does 2d10 damage)

>Bond system pretty cool where you use friends and connections for financial assistance and sanity buffer at expense to those connections, eventually develop them with fellow Agents which can be a bad thing

CONS

>Game seems a little less developed than CoC, no distinction of things like credit rating

>no luck system which I really like

>barely any stuff for it save handler gm book and some supplements which i haven't been to thrilled with

>combat system is kind of ass, though I have this problem with CoC to and run a lot of house rules. (Example granularity is lacking such as everything is a medium pistol etc etc, armor rules are terrible etc etc)

>Setting justification for agent involvement is kind of unreasonable I'm my opinion. (So I'm risking my livelihood, my sanity, and my health because it's the right thing to do?) Especially in the context of a modern, unheroic setting, seems kind of so dark that I question why anyone would sign up for this shit.

>it specifically talks about how many of the agents are personally motivated to carry out their functions based on personal ethos; particularly those belonging to the old guard or cowboy faction.

For a game that attempts to ground itself in gritty reality, and other worldly terror, it just really rustles my autism that the only thing either Delta Green offers are overbearing coercion or expectation that you are 'such a good guy.' I personally run it with the Old Guard being limited in assets but can provide access to lots of cash through investments both legal or otherwise, and official delta green getting access to unlisted equipment coopted by all sorts of departments.

Yeah, I also like to give my players some sort of incentive other than threats of murder or blacklisting. I like to use the MICE concept in spycraft which gets assets on board by either the application of Money, Ideology, Coercion, or Ego; basically asking players as to what would most likely what factors would motivate the player characters to join Delta Green. I've home ruled some benefits and drawbacks of what methodology got them involved with the organization.

Pulp is nice for campaign play. While it's technically written for dumber, pulpier adventures, a lot of Keepers use it as a way to make long-term campaigns more possible. I'm personally using it for Masks, but running the campaign as it's written with the themes and such of Classic, just so my players aren't losing characters every other session.
