/tg/ - Traditional Games

Mostly looping; I've found that it's good form to have a looped atmospheric track (rainfall, miscellaneous forest noises, etc.) faintly playing behind your theme song of the moment. This prevents the players from being jarred by the sudden silence when you switch tracks/fade out.

Personally speaking, specific sound effects are difficult to execute without some measure of railroading. But, when I do manage to pull it off, my players' immersion visibly deepens with the heralding of combat via feral roar or thunderous footfalls.

I tried for a time, but my laptop was so shit that running mynoise.net in a single tab slowed the whole thing down so much that I couldn't access my campaign notes. I've since gotten a new laptop, but I'm not GMing at the moment.

mynoise is a pretty neat site just for generic ambient sounds and music. You can get boisterous taverns and dripping dank cave sounds. I'd recommend it to any GM that thinks their game needs that extra bit of spice.

I like to assemble soundtracks and scores for my campaigns, it helps me get really invested in them. If I don't assemble a soundtrack for the game, I'll usually put on Radio Rivendell. If it's Shadowrun I play playlists and albums of new retro wave and synth and other cyberpunk music too.

I'll give NPC's theme songs too.

For my Dark Sun campaign I ran years ago, I went through hours and hours of movie and game soundtracks and assembled a couple of situation dependent playlists for the campaign.

Anxious progression in dangerous territory.

Most of these songs are really somber, even when they get intense, which is appropriate for the game they're from.

This is probably the most cut-loose track in the whole game. Your tolerance of modern instruments might be strained in this one, though. Bastion was really good at combining Old West feel with Old World instruments, and then letting modern instruments make up the midground.

Bonus: Hit the speed on up to x 1.25 and you have a serviceable, jaunty light combat theme, maybe a bar brawl or something. Always reminds me of Firefly.

I enjoy playing music during my games. For my Dark Sun campaign, I compiled around 8 hours of music from various movies and video games into context appropriate playlists to play during the game.

For most Pathfinder or generic D&D games, I put on Radio Rivendell.

For Shadowrun I put on a playlist of new retro wave and synth and other cyberpunk themed music.

When I was younger and had more time I used to mix several tracks in with eachother to create good ambient tracks, basically what Tabletopaudio has but I created all the tracks. It was fun, but very time consuming to get everything just right.

Leitmotifs can be useful outside of combat, especially if you want to hint at someone or something's involvement without directly stating it. This also makes your players pay better attention to their situations and surroundings.

It's best to use pieces that not everyone will recognize. For instance, a friend of mine uses Gnossienne to indicate when a certain character his BBEG has touched the plot.

I don't do music. For one thing, it can be hard enough to hear what's being said when everyone is talking at once, especially in a big game. For another, keeping the music going is an additional distraction that I'd rather not have. I've played in games with music (other people's campaigns), and either it's loud enough to get in the way, or quiet enough that you can't hear it over the din of voices. Also, at some point–inevitably–the music will stop playing for some reason, causing the game to come screeching to a halt–once it's noticed, if it's played quietly–to unfuck the music.

Me and my group (i started this in several groups now its tradition) use atmospheric music when traveling, usually music fitting the aesthetic of what im trying to convey. Finding different overworld themes of different games helps, and my rule is it has to pretty much always be orchestral. I also do battle music, and usually when combat initiates i say " Roll initiative and activate the battle music ". Most stuff from Two Steps From Hell works, and for battles i just have a playlist of them that i like.

I've been getting to know Stellaris recently. It's got some good dramatic "infinite exploration in the void" tracks.

Kokyo Active NEETs is a cover group of sorts that does mostly Touhou music but also a bit of whatever they fancy at the moment. They do jazz on the side, too.

They have hands-down some of the best orchestral renditions I've ever heard of any IP's works. Good use of piano, strings, and snare drumlines together, so if you want your game to sound like Kingdom Hearts but don't want your players to recognize it as such, they're your people.

I've got some houserules for this (when you're not playing with the app pro tip, ignore shit like "everyone takes X damage" as the end of turn events)

Select random monsters based on the biome as you normally do, but keep the red monsters (Leaders? Generals?) from one set, and the white ones from another. Saves you having to fight just two types of monster, which can grow dull fast.

I have a whole soundtrack on my phone with like 70 something looped and randomized playlists each with different moods, theme, or background and battle music. I stole the idea from Matt Mercer, and it really adds to the atmosphere. I also got a little portable bluetooth speaker so I can connect wirelessly and take it with me anywhere I need to set up. For background noise to set a scene I use Plate Mail Games' RPG soundtracks (highly recommend checking their shit out on RPGDriveThru though maybe at some point I'll pack up all the ones I have and upload them on here). I don't do sound effects because I prefer to make them myself via onomatopoeia.

Another answer to this is cross-fading, a slow transition between two tracks. The app I have on my phone to play music does nice slow 30 second transitions (though it's customizable) so there is never any jarring silence between tracks and in fact they each blend in to one another. The app I use is called Poweramp in case anyone is curious.

Poweramp is pretty good if you're playing music from a mobile device. It's got customizable cross-fading, a pretty decent file browser, and it's compatible with a decent amount of sound file formats. Foobar 2000 is pretty good if you're using a computer. It's got a file browser as a side window and there are plug-ins for cross-fading and whatever other effects you might want.

Want to spice up your narration of a mundane place turned into a charnel house? Perhaps you even want to make that place into a deadly trap. Have a listen and see if it's right for you.

Well, sorry I didn't explain myself further. I enjoy the thought of having background music, and I especially enjoy it when it is included in YouTube series and the like. However, much to the disappointment of myself and my group, playing music ended with me being unable to fully hear the music or my players.

That said, if my hearing wasn't complete shit I would have wanted to listen to music in a different language but with the same mood, or music with a solemn tone. For inspiration though, I enjoy Dio and many power metal bands.

David Edwards is one hell of a banjo player, and an amazing lyricist. I played his shit when my group of friends got lost in the backroads trying to find a cabin we were gonna stay at. Had someone actually beg me to turn it off, because the ambiance was freaking him out.

He was the talent behind 16 horsepower, another great band, but one that probably would ruin the effect of storytelling at a table.

You could find general dungeon background ambience pretty easily anywhere, but if you are looking for specifics, you coupd always just consider seperate sounds when you imagine a dungeon.

Wind blowing, general earth noises and water dropping may make sense in a cave, but not so much in a ruin or a bona fide dungeon. Whereas you wouldn't hear torches crackling in a cave by default ambience. You can always just get a couple samples and splice them together with audacity and throw some filters on so it sounds more natural.

Also depends on what kind of atmoshpere you want to establish. Happy funtime exploring or wonder will "sound" different that dangerous gruff and tough dungeon dwelving.

Generally speaking regarding actual music, check some dungeonsynth and instrumental drone metal for some starting places.

Yes, I would usually play music on my TV and let my players add stuff to the playlist (I had a chromecast). However my most successful session was when I forwent the music to instead put embed related on my TV. In-game, my players were raiding a spoopy haunted mansion. While it was a mostly a regular 5e campaign I took a sharp twist with that specific session and ramped up the horror. It worked very well, as they got legitimately spooked out of character by the mansion. The best part was, the house wasn't legitimately haunted as much as it was just a lich messing with them with a raven familiar. Literally half of the spooky things came with it just being an old, abandoned and busted up house. The other half was the lich using illusion spells. They ended up jumping out the second floor window in a mad dash to get out. The raven familiar managed to lock most of the doors while they weren't paying attention and it really spooked them because they thought they were magically sealed and the mansion was trying to keep them in, not mundanely locked. Anyways, I found that the ambient sound I placed really set the mood for the whole session. While usually we joke and have a lot of fun laughing about our silly antics in the game, the mood was well set and they fell into a horror movie protag mindset. They agreed it was one of the best individual sessions I ever hosted, so I guess I can say the ambient sound can have a good effect. I may have to try doing that more often.
