An epic high-flying role-playing game about reborn god-heroes in a world that turned on them.

Start here: http://theonyxpath.com/category/worlds/exalted/

>That sounds cool, how can I get into it?

Read the 3e core book (link below). For mechanics of the old edition, play this tutorial: http://jyenicolson.net/exalted/. It'll get you familiar with most of the mechanics.

>Gosh that was fun. How do I find a group?

Pretty much everything to do with 3e. Off the top of my head:

>Release date announced 2012, walked back a few months at a time, coming 2013, give us kickstarter money guys, coming 2014, ohnoz we had a leak and must take a break, coming 2015, this is only an estimate don't hold us to it, coming 2016.

>We're removing flurries. Oh wait we're not, what I meant and was totally saying all the time is that you won't be spamming flurries every action.

>We're removing speedbumps, XP taxes, system bloat and overcomplicated charm trees. Here, have a craft system where you still need to buy every craft skill separately ONLY NOW WE CHANGED THE SEPARATIONS, also have a performance tree with Skill Focus: Perform(speech) and Skill Focus: Perform(dance) needing to be bought separately, and a character generation system that still penalizes you for not being a minmaxer.

>We're simplifying combat, no more ten-step attack resolution. And by "simplifying" I mean we're getting rid of the ten-step resolution CHART that made explicit how to handle attack resolution, but we're keeping all the things that could HAPPEN in these steps, like reroll charms and defenses you activate after seeing attacker's results! only now they don't list a step, you just gotta *waves hands* use common sense, figure it out yourself, it should be simple!

I think the "Ok Holden" and the lying should perhaps be treated separately.

If Holden&c say one thing about how they want Ex3 to look early on, and two years down the line they changed their mind during design phase, I don't feel this is an offense of any great magnitude, and it's perhaps not the kind of thing one thinks of when one hears "lying".

OTOH, when Holden is being a pretty princess who talks like 3e is his precious perfect baby and anything else gets remarks like

> Generally the terrible idea is playing 2e (ba-dum-crash)

despite the fact that he was happy to spend years working on and pimping 2e, one starts to smell douchebag. Which is it, Hamster - you were lying to us before, or you're lying to us now?

When 2e gave us the Abortion Punch Charm and 3e gives us the Rape Ghosts Charm, it tarnishes the image they've tried to build of 3e as "the good edition".

When 3e has a leak and the Holden's devteam responds by saying "the leak will force us to slow down work, reduce playtesting, and put out a lower quality product", I start to get the feeling that they have an already bad product, they know it, and they're seizing with both hands an opportunity to shift blame.

And then there was Holden's wonderful line of:

> so here's a fun thing: EX3 has produced fewer requests for rule-clarification than ANYTHING we published during 2nd edition

> The notion that VCR programming manual language leads to less player confusion is, as far as I can tell, very wrong.

said at a time when people who had preordered were still reporting "I got my book today!" Thank you, Captain Obvious, of course you're going to get few requests for clarification when people haven't had a chance to look at the rules yet!

(Not to mention the other umpteen confounding factors like playerbase size, or playerbase resignation as to whether requests for clarification will do shit)

In short, Holden is acting like a shill. So the way I see it is that "ok Holden" stands for something like "your opinion is bought and paid for, predictable, and thus of no value."

That depends on what you Exalt into, which also influences under which circumstances you Exalt.

You're gonna be a Solar, destined to be better at anything than any mortal could ever hope to be, a champion for the might of the Unconquered Sun? You Exalt as you battle unyielding against impossible odds, and triumph in glory as your aura flares with His brightness.

You're gonna be a Lunar, a shape-shifting warden against unreality and lieutenant to the aforementioned Solars? Luna herself appears before you in your most desperate hour, just as you make the conscious decision to keep marching forward despite all else, and your senses suddenly fill with a beastly rush as your body changes to accommodate your new form.

You're gonna be a Sidereal, an agent of Fate desperately trying to keep Creation under some semblance of control? You get taken and trained by other Sidereals, inducted into the grand conspiracy, exactly as was foretold since the day you were born.

You're gonna be an Abyssal, a twisted abomination crafted by the Neverborn in order to end Creation? That's on you. It's your fault. You accepted the pact. You were so afraid of dying that you agreed to help usher the death of Everything just so you could live a bit longer. Fuck you.

As for the Dragonborn, well, you're a noble. You've been raised since birth with the idea that your blood and powers give you divine right over Creation, and any other powerful beings are either Gods to be bargained with or Anathema to be purged. Good luck navigating the political and martial landscape, kiddo, you're gonna need it.

Don't know shit about Infernals.

No, it states explicitly in the MoEB: Abyssals that all Abyssals have a near death experience where a death prince waltzes up and offers them a deal.

You're thinking of Internals, who turned chickenshit in the moment they could have stood their ground and become Solars. Then a demon traipsed up, offered them power, and then exploded into a cocoon when they said yes, enveloping them and Exalting them of Hell.

>You're thinking of Internals, who turned chickenshit in the moment they could have stood their ground and become Solars. Then a demon traipsed up, offered them power, and then exploded into a cocoon when they said yes, enveloping them and Exalting them of Hell.

Infernals didn't necessarily "chickenshit". It's any moment of failure that defines them, not only cowardice.

You played the odds, you stuck out your neck for one deal too many, and now you're looking at a lifetime of debt. Or… you could listen to this weirdo offering you a way out.

You spent two years studying fragments of Old Realm so you could translate an artifice text you found. When you'd finally finished building the device described as providing endless fresh water, it instead blows up due to some mistake in construction, scalding your hands and blinding you. Hey, what's this voice promising to restore your sight, teach you Old Realm from a native speaker, and initiate you into the mysteries of the First Age?

You were Orpheus, playing the lyre to touch the heart of a Deathlord, leading your love out of the Underworld, and once you returned to Creation, you turned to look - a second too early.

Another thing the demon with the Infernal Exaltation often does is show up "too late". An hour ago, you didn't chickenshit. The Tyrant said he wanted your daughter, you said you weren't going to have any of this, and the Tyrant told his guards to show you why nobody objects. You could, perhaps, have become a Solar at that moment. No such thing happened. You weren't a coward, but you still didn't punch the Tyrant across the landscape. Now you're lying in a ditch, beaten half to death, your daughter taken.

Hey, kid, the Creators are on your side, and they're pretty horrified at the turn this world has taken too. They'll happily give you the power to fix this if you'll work for them.

Deal?

Actually, no, it's explicitly stated that they, some way or another, FAILED of their own accord the moment they COULD become a Solar (assuming there was a Solar Exaltion in the general vicinity in the first place, of course). That's important. The knowledge of having failed through their own shortcommings is what is supposed to keep them pliant and submissive.

At least that's what happened in 2e.

I still think there was something about a Charm that also did this, in Exalted.

>Tell me about the third edition.

Combat is crunchy but a manageable level now, as well as more fluid and cinematic.

Perfect defenses are a last resort and not a "lol fuck you" button anymore. Nor are they the linchpin of your combat build anymore.

It doesn't take hours to resolve a single turn of combat anymore.

Mortals and DB can present a hefty obstacle for a Solar, even a Dusk caste. Which means, now you actually have to think tactically in combat.

Sorcery was made exponentially more powerful and versatile, in short, fun.

There's an actual social influence system in place, rather than 2e's mind-laser tag bullshit.

EVOCATIONS

The setting is a lot more streamlined and most of 2e's grimderp bullshit surgically cut out. but muh raepgoast shut up.

At the same time, the setting was fluffed up and now there's multiple organic locations for all sorts of adventure with lots of tasty plot hooks.

Familiars don't suck anymore.

Martial Arts are decidedly more versatile and powerful than 2e. More fun as well.

Just off the top of my head.

>How easy is it to pick up?

It's… crunchy, but not to Hackmaster levels. If you're patient and manage to break your players in, you're going to have a blast.

>but my players are sticking with DnD because they're lazy assholes.

>EVOCATIONS

I have some questions about evocations…

So, how are you supposed to create/stat evocations? Are there any actual rules to it, or are the examples the only thing we have to work with?

Do all artifacts of rating 3 and above have evocations?

When a player crafts an artifact weapon, who decides what the evocations are going to be, the player or the ST? If the ST, how much input should a player have in what the evocations will be like?

Compared to charms, how are evocations supposed to stack up? Are they supposed to be weaker? Stronger? Equal?

Why would one unlock an evocation when they could just unlock a new charm for the same amount or less?

 No.258204

>>258200

>So, how are you supposed to create/stat evocations? Are there any actual rules to it, or are the examples the only thing we have to work with?

There's as many rules to it as there are for Charm design. Exigents and Arms of the Chosen will have some guidelines (for Charms in general and Evocations specifically, respectively).

>Do all artifacts of rating 3 and above have evocations?

If they're narratively "deep" enough. A belt of shadows isn't really deep enough to support Evocations, because it's so basic, but a particular belt of shadows, worn by an infamous thief, woven from a bit of Erembour's robe and imbued with some of her forbidden music, might have Evocations. All arms and armor have Evocations.

>When a player crafts an artifact weapon, who decides what the evocations are going to be, the player or the ST? If the ST, how much input should a player have in what the evocations will be like?

Both. The Evocations represent the concept of the artifact as a whole, so it's going to take back and forth agreement, just like it would any other custom artifact's powers.

>Compared to charms, how are evocations supposed to stack up? Are they supposed to be weaker? Stronger? Equal?

Equal to your Charms, but without much for bread and butter. Evocation trees are short, explosive, and flashy. You won't find much for e.g. an Excellent Strike equivalent, which is why Evocations are supplemental rather than something you could use exclusively as a fighting style.

>Why would one unlock an evocation when they could just unlock a new charm for the same amount or less?

Because Evocations do things your native Charmset can't, or do it in ways that resonate with your intended usage better than the default Charm. A Solar might want "stealth," but want it in a way that the Solar Stealth set doesn't really represent. For that, he would turn to Evocations.

The third image is the upcoming iconic Slayer and her backstory is as follows:

"Basphomy in Verdigris was a minor Tengese political pawn, alternately victimized by the occupying forces of the Realm and resistance elements of weak and disorganized An-Teng underground, who sought to be the tool of neither yet was forced into being a catspaw for both– and eventually a killer for the underground, though she knew she was viewed as a disposable asset to be used up and thrown away.

She's taken the stolen might of a Solar Exaltation as reason to swear she'll never bow to anyone or anything ever again, and has come to view the world as her oyster– she knows there are few things that can gainsay even her least desire now, and her retinue of demonic servants and handful of demon lovers have assured her that this is a completely proper attitude for one of her elevated station. Two years ago she was a Tengese pawn who had nothing; now she wears only the finest silks and the most beautiful jewelry (when she bothers to clothe herself at all, which is rarely, for her skin is like the finest armor), wields paired blades older than any standing nation in the world, takes what catches her fancy, and kills with poisonous green fire when offended. When this host of blessings is insufficient, Basphomy in Verdigris calls upon a terror chained in the depths of her Essence, and becomes a lean and eyeless dragon, whose screams are sonic hammers sufficient to shatter marble and explode flesh."

Holden said that if he had enough money, he would have commissioned an image where she "would probably be wearing significantly less (only jewels and golden adornments), lounging on a mound of jade and silver and fine furs, with blood-apes waving peacock-feather fans at her, an angyalka playing Time for her pleasure, and servant-boys pouring fine wine into a jeweled chalice held in one blood-stained hand."

You know, everyone says that Exalted show that if everyone is Mary Sue, no one is Mary Sue, but that entire paragraph reads as if someone set out to make the most Mary Sue character possible.

I'm not even sure if I can believe that paragraph is real, it's just too on the nose.

This does bring up something that I've been wanting to ask for a while, though: Was Exalted always so pretentiously written?

I don't remember ever having to look anything up in a dictionary back in 2e, but the 3e lore section honestly feels like someone just opened the thesaurus and randomly changed words to the most esoteric form possible, in some strange attempt to make it look more impressive.

Yes and no. The Usurpation was technically illegal as it went against the Solars divine right to rule, but Unconquered Sun had long since given up on the Solars, making it easier to Galway with. The assaulting of various gods, destruction oheavenly property, and murder of Gold Faction loyalists were the crimes most people cared about, but when the Sidereal broke the Constellation of Secrets, no one could remember who did what, so charges couldn't be brought.

Everything else was swept under the rug by Chejop Kejak and his political maneuvering.

So Sidereals are still very much in charge of Fate. The Gold and Bronze Factions play nice in Yu-Shan, but use pawns and agents to undermine each other in Creation.

A Heptagram-trained Patrician-born Peleps House Immaculate sifu and elite member of the Wyld Hunt was teaching a class on The Scarlet Empress, founder of the Scarlet Dinasty.

”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship The Scarlet Empress and accept that she was the holiest being the world has ever known, even greater than Tamas Khan!”

At this moment, a brave, patriotic, Dawn Caste Solar Exalted who had been in 1500 tours of duty in the Scavenger Lands and understood the necessity of the Solar Reclamation and fully supported every decision taken by the First Age Deliberative stood up and held up a rock.

”What is this rock, dynast?”

The arrogant sifu smirked quite Dynastically and smugly replied “It's a piece of yellow jade, you stupid Anathema”

”Wrong, it is a piece of Orichalcum ore. If you were the true inheritors of Creation you would be able to attune to it by now.”

The sifu was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of the Immaculate Texts. He stormed out of the room crying those dynastic crocodile tears. The same tears dynasts cry for the "downtrodden under Anathema rule" (who today live in such luxury they can afford interior plumbing and antibiotics) when they jealously try to annex neighboring territories form the deserving Lawgivers.

There is no doubt that at this point our sifu, Peleps Deled, wished he had submitted to Solar rule and become more than a miserable bickering noble in a crumbling empire. He wished so much that he had a Glorious Orichalcum Daiklave to ritually impale himself to save himself from embarassment, but he had aided the Immaculate Order in destroying them!

The students applauded and all accepted Solars as their rightful kings and masters. An eagle named “Solar Dominion” flew into the room and perched atop the Scarlet banner and shed a tear on the chalk, incinerating it in a golden bonfire that melted the attendants' eyes off. Hymns and prayers to the Unconquered Sun were intoned several times, and The Unconquered Sun himself showed up and enacted a decree to reinstate the Solar Deliberative.

The sifu lost his tenure and was fired, dishonorably discharged and his manse demolished the next day. He died of the Great Contagion and was tossed into the Labyrinth where he was forged into soulsteel to agonize for all eternity.

Glory to the Unconquered Sun.

Normally, I would agree with you. However, that's when we're talking about the Projected Release Date for the project being two years from now. Yes! All of the solars in the game I ran had flashbacks to their first age selves as part of their exaltation.

It provided context to their relationships with their lunars, namely that each of them dun goofed in teh first age.

For the Dawn caste, who didn't know old realm, it meant speaking his apologies in a tongue he didn't understand to a very angry owl woman.

For the Eclipse, it meant having to use diplomancy to gain her lunar (and his tribe of barbarians) as an ally.

And to our twilight caste, that poor fuck's lunar survived the first age and was a serious pack elder.

They had a limit break cascade, with each of their limit breaks setting off the next one's when they tried dealing with her. It was stupidly glorious.

The first age lunar basically got to say… "and this is why you idiots don't rule creation anymore."

With a core aspect of his character's personality sometimes sliding back into the First Age nature and nearly perfect memories all the way back to the Primordial War, I ruled he had an actual split personality. I based the alternate persona on the way the player ran his character with all the dick qualities ramped to 11.

It was so satisfying as a DM to run the scene where, after telling the dick persona to shut the fuck up, the player had to come crawling back for sorcery training.

Correct.

The great curse was never mentioned or understood by characters in game. The old-ass lunar's point was more that the solar's power made them irredeemable once they became corrupt, and the Dragonblooded– while douches– weren't entirely wrong to bring them down.

Of course, being a lunar, her idea was basically that civilization was the root of the corruption, that rot starts at the head, and the solars were the head and now the dragonblooded are.

Said Lunar was more interested in crashing civilization with no survivors than putting up with the circle admonishing her for the bloodiness of her edgeworld barbarian rituals, so when conflict occured, accrued limit cause a cascade of limitbreaks, which culminated in the Lunar saying "I told you so."

She didn't see the solars as cursed, she only saw them as madmen who should never be given power. The circle didn't help in that regard.

I'm trying to recruit players for one, with zero success so far. It's set in the Scavenger Lands, amidst a brewing cold war between the Realm and Lookshy and co., with the Guild and various other third parties going back and forth behiund the sidelines, waiting for the war drums to start banging. How does it sound?

Baikenfag here, I come bearing a story of meeting her second in command, from session 1 of our game, which I'm thinking of as the "Before shit went down" period.

>>283271

Superb Taste, my friend.

Anyway, Story.

The game begins after she Exalts against a group of marauders that burned her home, murdered her wife, and cut her nearly to ribbons. Living in the Hundred Kingdoms, probably not a good choice in retrospect. Regardless, she's now a Solar Exalt, walking heresy on two legs, and she has the most hateful of revenge boners(metaphorically.)

One marauding horde of bandits later, the final one offers to give up their 'leader' in exchange for his life. He mistook silence for agreement, and told her of a mighty giant of a man, who called himself "Crusher of Bones." Now she had a target. The Lover's Gently Fury did not have to try hard to find a literal walking giant of a man, even in the Hundred Kingdoms.

It was set to be an epic showdown, both Fury and Crusher were statted out to be combat heavy, with Fury trading social skills for her further ability to kick a lot of ass with one arm. First round, we roll initiative, she flurries, drawing and striking, and…

Crusher's Initiative crashes. The man who would later become her military advisor had, during his character creation, bought NO armor, bought very few charms, and had no Dex at all, just a bunch of stamina. Fury crashed him so hard our ST had to intervene with a thematically appropriate flash to their first lives, when she sat on the throne of a majestic, golden flying city, and he was her personal guard, as well as her military advisor.

In real time, the horde stared, stunned by this mysterious, pink haired warrior staying their blade from ending their leader. No words offered, her daiklaive was sheathed, her anger dissipating, and her remaining hand helping him to his knees. Several long explanations later, she found out his horde had split shortly after he Exalted, nearly half of them going with the man she'd already slain in her rage for killing her wife. Fences were(mostly) mended, and with the beginnings of a Circle, Fury and Crusher set out to find the remaining members of their circle, of those who were her advisors and confidants during the First Age.

Next Time: Fury and Crusher decide to get the dumbass some armor, and meet two, mysterious new figures.

The charm in question's in the free adventure that was released in association with Return of the Scarlet Empress; the one about infiltrating the Imperial Manse. There were character sheets for the Signature Circle as pregen PCs, and Panther had the Abortion Punch charm (which was presumably intended to be used in the context of the adventure to punch the Roseblack out of her mind control).

I recommend 3e. It's just smoother.

As for metaplot, it's all in the core book. There's not really an extra reading list. Here's the short(ish) version.

>Primordials butthurt over no order in the chaotic Feywild.

>PrImordials create world.

>Primordials settle down to play games, but world is made from chaos stuff, so it keeps changing.

>Primordials create gods to run creation for them, so they can play games.

>All work and no play make gods butthurt.

>Cannot turn on primordials, because primordials programmed the 3 laws into them.

>Instead create Exalted with the help of two primordials.

>Exalted have a portion of the god's power, but have free will.

>Elemental dragons create elemental themed terrestrial, a.k.a. dragon-blooded, are front line soldiers. Exaltation is heritable, so they breed an army.

>The sun god (the most powerful) creates the solar exalted to lead the army. They are focused on perfection of a single art or skill set, and will surpass all other exalted in their chosen specialty. Only 300 at a time. When one dies, its 'shard' of power attaches to another human.

>Five star goddesses of fate create sidereal exalted as advisors and spies and to maintain the Loom of Fate. Only 100 total at a time (20 per goddess).

>Moon goddess creates lunar exalted as bodyguards and mates to the solar exalted. Focus is mostly on wilderness survival and shapeshifting.

>Exalted fight primordials.

>Exalted win.

>Corpses of dead primordials become underworld and want to destroy the world, as they cannot truly die as long as they're attached to it.

>Largest living primordial cut down the middle, turned inside out, then sewn shut with other living primordials imprisoned within, becoming literally Hell.

>Dying primordials curse exaltations.

>Solars go insane. Sidereals decide to overthrow them with dragon-blooded help.

>Almost all solars die.

>Most shards imprisoned at the bottom of the ocean.

>Lunars run to the edge of the world.

>Sidereals erase presence from their existence such that people can't even remember seeing them.

>Dragon-blooded rule the world using new religion setting them up as gods and calling for the death of solars and lunars, now called 'Anathema.'

>World progressively gets worse.

>Dragon-blooded empress disappears.

>Underworld attempts to steal trapped solar shards using plan from Hell in return for 50 of the shards.

>Plan fails. Underworld only gets 150 of 300 solar shards, keeping 100 and giving 50 to Hell.

>Both Underworld and Hell make corrupted versions of solars.

>Other 150 shards are now free and start being reborn after thousands of years of being trapped.

>World is screwed up beyond belief and under siege by undead, demons, fey, and internal strife.

>World is so bad, it's impossible to fix.

>Doing the impossible is the forte of solars.

>PCs are a group of solars.

I don't understand why they'd want to go to a country so fucking miserable that the only ones with the ability to feel genuine happiness are fucking neets holding their body pillow. Living in America you already get the best things Japan has to offer you. Sure they produce entertainment, but who the fuck would look at the culture that drives workers to suicide and say "You know what? I'll join that shit."

It's not as bad as going to China, but still.

Japan has a fascinating culture. I always used to read about mythology and shit as a kid, so I was already into it well before having any interest in anime and the like. The lands themselves, at least in the rural areas, seem like they'd be wonderful to live.

However, that same cultural knowledge is why I'd never want to live there. It's a different people, with different beliefs and values. As a white American, moving there is just a matter of insanity - you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Living in the city is a cancer no matter where in the world you go, and living in the countryside can be accomplished just as easily in the west. There's no reason to travel halfway around the world to do that with strangers you've never met.

What we know so far:

>5x -0, 10x -1, 10x -2, -4, and Incap HL's

>The first evocation it has allows you to roll your current initiative when hit with a decisive attack and add that amount of hardness to your warstrider, losing only the amount of initiative equal to the hardness gained.

>Warstriders cost 15 motes to attune

>Artifact 5 or N/A

>Require a Greater Hearthstone to power

>-3 penalty to physical actions if you do not have the right lore and athletics specialization for your 'strider

>Counts as Heavy Armor for the purposes of Martial Arts

>Things that modify your personal strength, soak, armor etc do not affect the 'strider

>Things that modify things like non-personal armor rating, soak, attack, damage, etc. still work

>Warstrider weapons all use Artifact Weapon stats due to being YUUUUGE

>Gain a -4 penalty to attack and spot human-sized targets

>Have the Legendary Size merit (reference the T-Rex)

>Can reflexively attack terrain or battle-groups once per turn

>Warstrider's strength rating is based on your strength rating, but it's always buffed (i.e. Str5 -> Str10 while Str1 -> Str 6 or something? Table to reference.)

>Warstriders have their own damage track, soak and hardness

>The Pilot is not normally attack-able while inside, outside of a specific Gambit

>Gains a +2 speed bonus

>Does not roll to disengage from human-sized or smaller opponents

>Warstriders are heavy and automatically smash things

>But on the other side, if you have those kinda Charms, you can use Graceful Crane Stance and similar

>Requires Craft (First Age Artifacts) to maintain, must maintain for every ten hours of cumulative damage or suffer damage (One die of decisive per ten hours)

>Repairing even a single health level is considered a Major Project

Any if you can justify it, though I'd probably go for either a weapon skill (I am using this weapon to torture them) or perhaps medicine (I am using my advanced knowledge of the body to exact as much pain as possible).

I'm not sure if there are any charms in particular for torturing people. Probably because social charms can do the exact same thing, but without the need for violence.

All of them. The combat skills speak for themselves, as for the others (taken from 2e):

- Integrity lets you disbelieve the lies of others, allowing you to browbeat them into telling the truth.

- Performance involves giving a performance that turns the person most precious to them into a massive fucking slut who'll have a train pulled on them until the interrogatee tells the truth.

- Presence mindfucks the subject into telling whatever the Solar wants to hear.

- Resistance allows for an interrogation that goes on for days with no end.

- Survival summons creatures to torment the victim.

- Craft allows the Solar to create weapons out of bone… without removing them from the body first.

- Investigation can ask the right question to break the target.

- Lore allows for the victim to be infused with the Wyrd to mutate them horribly.

- Medicine inflicts the target with a horrible disease, and if they tell the truth they'll be cured.

- Occult allows for the devouring of the interrogatee's soul if they don't tell the truth.

- Athletics will have the target elbow dropped in the dick after a jump that can scale a mountain over and over again.

- Awareness allows the Solar to spot all deceptions placed before them so you can ask the right questions.

- Dodge… dunno, as far as I know you can't dodge with these Charms in social combat.

- Larceny has you pluck the victim's organs out one by one until they talk. Normally this only works on Extras, but you're a Solar. To you everyone is an Extra.

- Stealth allows for a new interrogator to appear every hour… except that they're the same person over and over again.

- Bureaucracy turns an entire institution against the victim, their family and their home.

- Linguistics lets you write a speech that will make the subject spill the beans regardless of whether they want this or not.

- Ride will have the target tied to a horse and dragged around until they break.

- Sail will… okay, not even I can work with Sail.

- Socialize allows you to make someone believe that being tortured is perfectly normal, and the proper response to it is answering truly.

In a place where it's tradition for nobles to wear masks because "peasants don't deserve to see our god-blessed faces", what security protocols could be implemented at a nobles-only soireé in order to give the PCs a token challenge to overcome if they want to infiltrate it?

 No.339383

Since this is Exalted we're talking about here, the masks allow the owner to breathe in anything. So the whole nobility shindig takes place in an area that's not normally habitable to people, like inside a giant pool filled with tea or inside a vacuum where the masks allow you to breathe.

The next security measure could be that the masks themselves act as a key to open the portal that leads you into the ballroom - the trick here is that every mask has one line of some song written on it, and you're supposed to read it when you get to the door, but they have to be read in the correct order which only the nobles know. So the host goes first, then comes the first guest, then the second, you get the idea. If your players want to infiltrate, they not only have to find the proper mask, they have to arrive at a proper time, and then know to decipher the line written on the mask. And, of course, only the nobles know when and where they're supposed to arrive, and who has the mask to get in.

For extra shit and giggles, you could make it so that all the guards there are either elementals (because "peasants" involves even the nobles' guards there, so nobody living but them gets access - meaning your whole party has to steal masks) or even better, undead. So the whole ordeal there? Arranged by Mask of Winters. Your players just infiltrated a meeting where a bunch of traitorous nobles want to sell Creation to the Mask if he lets them rule the ashes. Or even better, the nobles are long gone, and what your players have been chasing after were a bunch of simulacra created by the Mask himself. So have fun, instead of dealing with a bunch of mortals, now you have a bunch of undead monsters to deal with.

>capital of Coral

So you're going for pirate adventures?

One option is to replace vacuum with the inside of a volcano. Or, because this is an adventure at sea, have a giant undead kraken protect the meeting, with the ballroom being located inside the beast. So, if your players manage to sabotage the meeting (and they will), the Mask responds by siccing the kaiju at Coral and wrecking it in the process. He wants to either build his own pirate fleet, or he gets Coral destroyed - either works for him. Even better if he somehow found more of the monsters just lying around, and is using the whole nobles rebelling thing as a smokescreen while he reanimates more of giant undead squids.

Basically, imagine Lovecraftian monsters such as the Deep Ones, Dagon and the whole underwater crew suddenly becoming zombies and invading the land. That's what's in store for Coral, if the Mask manages to succeed in his plans. If he fails, well, he caused enough havoc with the whole nobles rebelling thing that he can start a proper war campaign against Coral with his army of Deathknights.

I've got to agree with this bit here

>When 3e has a leak and the Holden's devteam responds by saying "the leak will force us to slow down work, reduce playtesting, and put out a lower quality product", I start to get the feeling that they have an already bad product, they know it, and they're seizing with both hands an opportunity to shift blame.

At the risk of straying too close to politics outside the containment thread, I'm pretty sure Holden's plan was to reap the sweet sweet hipster shekels by going Maximum OverSocJus only to slowly realize those motherfuckers will NEVER be your customers, and is not treading water to justify his own existience. What I can't figure out, is why the fuck that whole team wasn't fired and replaced YEARS ago. Not for SocJus shit, but for taking so damn long to put out any product at all. Who the fuck even owns the IP? I don't get buying something and then just sitting on it while the already niche fanbase just gets more and more disillusioned.

Paradox Interactive bought out White Wolf– Onyx Path is renting the IP from them. Since they were primarily interested in Vampire's oWoD videogame rights, we have Chronicles of Darkness and Onyx path renting IP's they used to own through White Wolf as the 'new normal.'

Since they were focused on video games, I think Paradox didn't care what Onyx Path did with Exalted so long as they got their 30 pieces of silver…

Well, get ready to hear some (relatively) good news. Holden and Morke got their asses canned and the new team has picked up the pace something fierce. Not only has the corebook come out but Arms of the Chosen came out as well, and new content is being teased and trickled down periodically. Moreover, Vance takes time to answer fan questions semi-regularly (contrast with Holdorke's douchy secretive bullshit) and feedback is always welcome. Of course there's a shitload of problems and the production schedule is nothing short of glacial, but at least we're seeing a faint glimmer of hope at last.

>What I can't figure out, is why the fuck that whole team wasn't fired and replaced YEARS ago.

Clique bullshit and coasting on their previous star power. Unfortunately for Holdorke and friends and fortunately for us, both the fanbase (even the most blindly loyal lickspittle) and the people in charge got sick of their bullshit.

I'll preface this by admitting my knowledge is second hand.

From what I've heard: The Noble Champion of the Underworld role that some Abyssal Exalted might have filled has been given over to the Liminal, and Abysalls are just Hatefucking Murderrapist.

So, to answer your question: pic related.

>both the fanbase (even the most blindly loyal lickspittle) and the people in charge got sick of their bullshit.

It had nothing to do with social justice politics and the abysmal pace of development was set to continue forever if not for the following: OPP wanted to bring some attention and revenue back to the staggering RPG line so they published Miracles of the Solar Exalted, which is comprised of content cut from the core book. It was cut because Holden, Morke, and their team exceeded the predetermined limit of what could be fit into the core book, and that limit was defined in their contracts in terms of word count. It was also stated in their contracts that they would not be paid for any content they created that exceeded that word count, and it was stated that this cut content would belong to OPP and not Holden, Morke, or anyone on the team. Once Miracles was published Holden and Morke remonstrated extremely loudly that they wouldn't do any more work on Exalted until OPP paid them for the content they'd made. They had absolutely no leg to stand on in court so OPP just fired them.

This is just my opinion, but Imma toss it out there anyway.

So in Dreams of the First Age we meet Contentious Sword, the last person to hold the Dawn Caste essence that empowers Dace in the modern day. I forget which book it was in, but latter on there was a comic showing Contentous Sword's ghost, in his badass gravegoods panoply o Doom, leading the resitence against the Deathlords in the Underworld.

The gist of that is that a bunch of Solar Exalted from the first age, freed of the mind warping of the Great Curse, overwhelmed with remorse, and packing spectral artifacts and the essence to use them, decide to become Heroes without the Greek freakouts like Achilles just sulking in his tent or Heracles killing his own children to fake being crazy because he was afraid of going to war

So… my own guess is that's where the concept of the Liminal got started.

But the "niche" the Liminial are supposed to fill is the fact that the Underworld didn't have it's own badass powers…. sort of. The Neverborn, (Dead Primordals) made the Deathlords to klll creation so it would fall into the underworld, then the underworld would fall into Oblivion, then the Neverborn would go in after, because existence is suffering or some shit. The Abyssal Exalted exist because the Deathlords were taking too long. So, all the Underworld themed characters wanted to DESTROY the underworld. Again, sort off. Remeber there are only stats for half the deathlords, and it is in the nature of the Exalted to forge thier own path and give the finger to anyone who tries to stop them. True, a defiant Abyssal is going to have a rough time (Think early Black Swordsman Guts) but you're a damn EXALT. Write a song that makes the hearts of dead gods weep and teach the Neverborn to love again.

or go full death metal and teach the neverborn to rock the fuck out - whatever works - exalted is all about rule of cool

but ya, Liminals seem to be an attempt to make (literal) frankensteinian underworld exalts who can be more 'good guy undead heroes' instead of 'I used to work for a deathlord, but now I'm an antihero' because it is really damn hard for an abyssal to be a good guy since you have to kill or drain others for essence

Impenetrable Veil of Night

Cost: 30sm, 1wp

Keywords: None

Duration: One day

A twisting nexus of living shadows takes form between

the sorcerer’s hands. As she completes the spell, she casts

the umbral tangle upward, where it expands into a column

of ebon darkness centered on the sorcerer that extends

out one mile in horizontal diameter and immeasurably

high vertically. Within the Impenetrable Veil of Night,

torches, lanterns, and even anima banners cast light out

only to half their usual range, while speech and noises

echo in strange, unnatural ways. Even characters with

supernatural senses capable of seeing in mundane darkness

still suffer a -2 penalty on all Awareness or Perception-

based rolls made within the veil. A battle group that is

caught within the darkness immediately makes a rout

check at +1 difficulty.

A sorcerer who knows Impenetrable Veil of Night as her

control spell speaks with a distorted voice, as if she were

always standing within the nihil of the spell. Light subtly

flees her body. She gains three bonus dice on Stealth

rolls made to stay hidden while moving in combat at

night or in shadowy environs, but loses the same amount

of dice in broad daylight while in open spaces. She also

gains a +2 bonus to movement actions made at night,

but a -2 penalty to movement actions made in open daylight.

——————————————————————————————-

Anyone else think this spell sounds kind of… weak? I mean, it's got great range, it affects characters with even supernatural senses and the penalty is broad in scope. But come the fuck on, a -2 penalty? Anyone with an excellency is gonna shrug that right off. Hell, the average spirit is barely gonna notice.

Yes, but I don't see what the means of propulsion are. It would be easy within the rules to use a charm that moves things you punch, extrapolate a speed, then jump on it. It could also be an artifact of some kind or a combination of a thrown charm with improvised weapon rules and stunting your ability to stay on it. There is also a charm that you can use to jump a few dozen miles in a single bound, so you could even just say that this is your character's version of that charm.

How would you translate the following to an Athletics charm?

>Making It Look Easy

>When a character performs a feat of strength, doing so takes every bit of effort the character can muster. He doesn’t just lift a blue whale by the tail and hammer throw it back into the ocean between bites of scone. He grunts and strains and struggles until he gets enough momentum behind the whale for it to leave the ground, and when he lets it go, it’s with a resounding shout of strain and a near collapse of relief as it sails out over the water. The name of this Knack, however, speaks for itself. Any action the character can perform as a feat of strength, he can perform as if it’s no effort at all. He can lift the heaviest weights with one hand while using his other hand to cover a yawn. He can throw a spear into orbit with a flick of his finger. He can scoop the beached whale up in one hand and send it skipping like a stone out into the deep water where it can move freely (if dizzily) once again. Since such feats of strength are so easy, the character can execute multiple actions while performing feats of strength.

Technically, >>385676 is wrong, but not for any rules reason iirc. It's that social combat works on a time-scale that's much longer than physical combat. Each tick of physical combat represents roughly 1 second of "real time" while each tick of social combat represents roughly a minute.

So you could combine the two, but you would have to get through 60 ticks of physical combat just to have one tick of social combat, and that just isn't happening.

I've created a Raksha antagonist whose identity revolves around being a gallant champion of the downtrodden and slayer of evil. Said Raksha gained a cult following when he marched into some town that was a glorified bandit stronghold and personally massacred the leadership of every gang along with most of their numbers. He returns every year to vanquish an evildoer and his cronies, which means the local pop subtly guides him towards the local criminal head honcho to gut him, or if there's nobody around who fits that description they shove a bunch of prisoners and other undesirables into the role. Whenever the "ritual" is fulfilled the Raksha showboats his kill to the entire town and drinks in their hope and gratitude and so on. Now, I have two questions. One, what long-term effect would this have on the townspeople's psyche and what "tells" can they exhibit to subtly tip the players that something is wrong? Two, what would be a fitting consequence if the terms of the ritual are not fulfilled?

That, and IIRC then the whole Green Sun Prince splatbook was by far the worst of 2nd edition - so a lot of work is being put into revamping them.

Just like now the abyssals dont just have default skill based charms - instead each deathlord has a host of charms they can teach the abyssals. It mixes things up.

now whether this will pay off in the long run - who knows - but the idea of devil-tiger stuff being moved to lower essence levels... that means that you dont have to hit essence 5 or 6 before you can break free from your yozi overlords, which will make games a lot easier to run

What is this? I want to do this, but what do you think it is?

Is this Fiery Solar Chakram comboed to Malfeas and Back?

Is this a personal re-skin of Blazing Solar Bolt?

Or was there a variant of Total Annihilation that invokes the power of the Unconquered Sun instead of Liger hiding under that Pornstash?

We're a month in to our Exalted Game, using second ed. GM has laid down the following house rules: No overdrive charms, Perfect Defense never has Combo-OK, Virtue Channels can be spent on second winds (roll number of dice equal to virtue; heal that many wounds; actions must correspond to Virtue rolled) Damage does not overflow past incap. (this is ruled to be a part of Exaltation. In effect once you fill in your incap box all further damage is discarded from that roll. It takes a very deliberate act to kill an Exalt.) and the group voted to keep 2.0 weapon stats instead of using the 2.5 lines.

So, within those houserules how would YOU build a Cruel Sun?
