I think though Tenda does recognise his problems from time to time but that just leads to incredible depression until his insanity takes him away again. We've seen it comes in waves.
When self-deceit and self-aggrandization is caused by narcissism (as in NPD) it's not something he can fix by willpower. I think this is the great mistake almost everyone makes, not appreciating the reality of mental illness. If someone has a broken leg then they can't walk. No one claims it's an attitude problem.
