Can we get a thread on trek books? What are your favorites? Most hated? Ever read any that tried something new with the sereis you really liked or fell flat on in its face in a mediocre disgrace?

>Are the Titan books any good?

I tried to get into them, bought the first one, but I just couldn't. They weren't Chuck Wendig-tier horrible, but the sort of thing that you could just put down at a crucial plot point and never pick back up.

Since the first few were always written by the same guys I just wrote the series off.

Now that you mention it, Data was definitely more of a dramatic foil in this book than his actual character.

I really enjoyed those books.

My favorites are TOS books, in particular:

The Kobayash Muru

Uhura's Song

People either loved or hated these books. They're basically a 'below decks' TOS story with new characters working under the usual crew.

I liked 'em. Piper a cute.

I only just recently picked up a book that actually is the first few novellas of the New Frontiers series of stories. So far it is fine but is making it seem rather odd with the hermaphrodite officer, the vulcan whose husband died mid sex-romp in the hieghrs of pon-farr and the captain being some guy who almost single-handedly threw out the colonial oppressors of his homeworld. Still, nothimg too crazy (by Trek standards) about it.

As a general rule any and all Trek novels are a teetering half-step above fanfiction.

>I'm curious what happened after they got back to Earth.

Nothing serious, I would imagine. O'Brien was expected to go right back to keeping DS9 running after 20 virtual years of incarceration, with only a token amount of time to cope. Same goes for Picard and the episode where he got his flute. Voyager's crew only had 7 years where they couldn't phone home, at most they'll each get a 20 minute session with a counselor before being returned to regular duties.

I've heard largely the same, the fact that none of them are canon either doesn't help matters as it means they're just high-budget fanfiction with no connection to other books. Swoleverse is good tho.

Tekwars? I semi remember the tv series but never read the book. If I ever do, I insist on the audiobook version read by the Shatner himself. If what jewikipidia says is true, it was created by Shat and ghostwritten by someone else.

I'm pretty sure Shatner has never actually written a book. Tekwar at least was his original idea, and he had some outlines and stuff that he passed off to the ghostwriter. To my knowledge everything else has been ghostwritten entirely. There was one about a guy who reluctantly leads the Martian revolution as revenge for the Earth government killing his dog in a foiled assassination plot. It was pretty damn good.

The only Star Trek actor to actually legitimately write a Star Trek book is Andrew Robinson (Garak.) Everyone else just used ghostwriters. They probably HAD to use ghostwriters. I doubt paramount or whoever wants amateurs just going out there trying to be writers for their franchise.

i could be off on some of this but i'm pretty sure that the primo genre book gigs are for the film and tv novelizations. Those are expected to be as good as they can be, they get the scripts to work with, and they often add details that you dont get in the actual films. It's almost like "writers commentary" on the material. Trek litverse is shit, though, and the reason is that professional authors use these types of platforms to unload their B and C-grade stories and ideas. They're not giving them their best so you never get the best.

So, what can happen is that if an author is working on a story and it actually turns out to be really good (by the genre's standards), they're under immense pressure to simply change the names and the setting and turn it into a stand-alone IP. This i believe is how 50 Shades of Grey happened. It started-out as a Twilight story. What this means is that every good Star Trek book thats been written probably got diverted into it's own standalone IP. Hardcore sci-fi books nerds could probably take a guess at which ones those are. Would be fun to go back and change them back into Star Trek stories.

So, the process can go both ways, but it's usually just hack authors unloading their sub-standard material, and that's why it almost universally sucks. I write for fun and I know that in today's climate I absolutely wouldn't submit a Star Trek story if i thought it was really good. I'd turn it into something separate. It just doesn't make any sense to hand it over to these vile creatures.

Pretty much the crew gets stuck on some planet, and its mostly an excuse to tell character backstory while they're stuck in an alien prison camp. That, and I think Harry Kim gets his leg telefragged by a cave.
