Can we get a thread on trek books? What are your favorites? Most hated? Ever read any that tried something new with the sereis you really liked or fell flat on in its face in a mediocre disgrace?

I quite enjoyed Dark Mirror by Diane Duane, but it was written before the DS9 mirror episodes so it was quite different from what the MU ended up being like in the show.

I, Q by John Delancie and…ugh… Peter David.
>Q has no redeeming qualities
>Goes to random locations in the universe in an Alice In Wonderland sort of trippy voyage
>Reads like fanfic by a young nerd who wants to fuck Delancie
>The David parts are painfully obvious, like when Q meets the Grand Nagus who declares something "Inconceivable!", which causes Q to remark "That word… I do not think it means what you think it means."
Sold it at a garage sale for 50 cents and laughed at the sucker behind his back.

Are the Titan books any good? I had that "and then what happened?" feeling awhile back and learned that the TNG "arc" pretty much continues with Riker captaining his own ship.
Then I hear that it's some sort of pro-diversity autofellatiofest. Like they brag about it on the back cover, or some shit?

I liked it, for the most part. The audiobook version happened to be on youtube, which is as far as I'd go in recommending it.

Compared to other non-canon offerings, Imzadi was pretty damn good. Kinda like a two-parter episode of the series, and I think you'll enjoy it if you approach it as such. Frakes did the audiobook version, which is pretty great.

It was, but Data was a fucking Terminator through the whole thing.
One part that I did like was Riker going through Lwuxana's personal effects and finding the Holy Rings of Betazed in the back of a closet.

I don't know. I kind of want to blame the whole thing on David, but you just know he fucking spread those cheeks whenever Delancie pushed back hard enough.

I listened to the audiobook of Q because I noticed it was narrated by John De Lancie as well and I love me some Q shit. It was actually okay but kind of stupid, there were parts I thought it was quite engaging but then all of a sudden the quality would just take a dive and it would be pages of some mediocre scene. Narration was top notch on it though, I like the Star Trek audiobooks because a lot of them are narrated by the cast members and it has all the licenced sound effects and background music. Overall its very light, and I don't normally like those types of edits in audiobooks, but Star Trek pulls it off because the sound effects are so iconic and well remembered it just makes me feel like its proper trek. Original Sereis books are normally much better than the TNG ones, haven't got round to DS9 books yet but they sound like they could be pretty good.
Have any of you read the one about the Eugenic Wars of the 1990s and the uprising of Khan? I thought that one was pretty good, it also has all that Assignment Earth stuff in it going on, it really isn't the sort of book you would real unless you were quite into trek and it is packed with all sorts of little connections to the sereis.
The Shatner books also seem to be quite good, his writing style is better than the utter garbage that fat fuck Peter David spews out. What I really want to see is more books that have NOTHING to do with the enterprise, like give us some story on the history of Vulcan or the Klingon civil war. Imagine how awesome some of the fiction could be in this universe, but they always have to try milk the same settings and characters, instead of making some new original content. I do actually like a lot of the Trek books but you gotta be prepared to go through a lot of shit ones till you find one that clicks.

I tried to get into them, bought the first one, but I just couldn't. They weren't Chuck Wendig-tier horrible, but the sort of thing that you could just put down at a crucial plot point and never pick back up.
Since the first few were always written by the same guys I just wrote the series off.

I only just recently picked up a book that actually is the first few novellas of the New Frontiers series of stories. So far it is fine but is making it seem rather odd with the hermaphrodite officer, the vulcan whose husband died mid sex-romp in the hieghrs of pon-farr and the captain being some guy who almost single-handedly threw out the colonial oppressors of his homeworld. Still, nothimg too crazy (by Trek standards) about it.

As a general rule any and all Trek novels are a teetering half-step above fanfiction.
>I'm curious what happened after they got back to Earth.
Nothing serious, I would imagine. O'Brien was expected to go right back to keeping DS9 running after 20 virtual years of incarceration, with only a token amount of time to cope. Same goes for Picard and the episode where he got his flute. Voyager's crew only had 7 years where they couldn't phone home, at most they'll each get a 20 minute session with a counselor before being returned to regular duties.

Tekwars? I semi remember the tv series but never read the book. If I ever do, I insist on the audiobook version read by the Shatner himself. If what jewikipidia says is true, it was created by Shat and ghostwritten by someone else.

I'm pretty sure Shatner has never actually written a book. Tekwar at least was his original idea, and he had some outlines and stuff that he passed off to the ghostwriter. To my knowledge everything else has been ghostwritten entirely. There was one about a guy who reluctantly leads the Martian revolution as revenge for the Earth government killing his dog in a foiled assassination plot. It was pretty damn good.
The only Star Trek actor to actually legitimately write a Star Trek book is Andrew Robinson (Garak.) Everyone else just used ghostwriters. They probably HAD to use ghostwriters. I doubt paramount or whoever wants amateurs just going out there trying to be writers for their franchise.

i could be off on some of this but i'm pretty sure that the primo genre book gigs are for the film and tv novelizations. Those are expected to be as good as they can be, they get the scripts to work with, and they often add details that you dont get in the actual films. It's almost like "writers commentary" on the material. Trek litverse is shit, though, and the reason is that professional authors use these types of platforms to unload their B and C-grade stories and ideas. They're not giving them their best so you never get the best.
So, what can happen is that if an author is working on a story and it actually turns out to be really good (by the genre's standards), they're under immense pressure to simply change the names and the setting and turn it into a stand-alone IP. This i believe is how 50 Shades of Grey happened. It started-out as a Twilight story. What this means is that every good Star Trek book thats been written probably got diverted into it's own standalone IP. Hardcore sci-fi books nerds could probably take a guess at which ones those are. Would be fun to go back and change them back into Star Trek stories.
So, the process can go both ways, but it's usually just hack authors unloading their sub-standard material, and that's why it almost universally sucks. I write for fun and I know that in today's climate I absolutely wouldn't submit a Star Trek story if i thought it was really good. I'd turn it into something separate. It just doesn't make any sense to hand it over to these vile creatures.
