What's funny is I saw this movie on Comet last month, Arena (1989), which is set on space station and Marc Alaimo plays a fight organizer and Armin Shimerman is his rat-faced henchman. Alaimo's character has very Dukat hair as well… all four years before DS9, huh.

Comet is a channel that fucking absolutely NEEDS DVR. They have the legal limit of commercials and its fucking hard to watch that shit while it airs. The only things worse is the outdoor channels. Not only do they have the legal limit of commercials, the shows themselves are usually glorified infomercials. FFS I just want to watch people hunt and fish.

That's only one way to look at it. Method acting doesn't determine a character. Hugh Jackman would take freezing cold showers to get super pissed off to prepare for playing Wolverine. What you're saying is like implying that means Wolverine also took cold showers. Aside from that, preference does not determine sexuality. Garak could have been sexually attracted to Bashir, and even WOULD HAVE fucked him if given the chance, but since said chance never arose, it's irrelevant. In the purest sense, Garak is asexual, because he would never allow himself to get that close to anyone; and if he did, it would just be an act.

>I think it's quite obvious that Shatner was hitting the bottle quite hard at some point but he was never literally fucking insane like Brooks. At conventions the guy is tripping super hard, fans pretend it's some kind of "coolness". No wonder that his career completely died after DS9 (but then again, besides Siddig DS9 was a career killer for every cast member).

This outing didn't fair any better for him, the generous description repeated by the cast was "you have to approach Avery like he's a jazz artist," then everyone shared their stories of his completely batshit comments on set, followed a few short clips of Avery jabbering unintelligibly which I guess we're the only usable portions.

>>30908

>My theory is that Benny Russell is Brooks' true personality.

They even state this in the documentary as well, with extended after "cut" excerpt curled up in the fetal position balling and everyone else looking really uncomfortable.

About 50-60 people at the showing I went to. The clips featured look exceptionally well in HD most of the time, some shots seemed a tad out of focus (but hey it's TV). There was a re-rendered CGI scene from the dominion war fleet battle, it was a good tease for what is possible but was by no means a final polished cinema-ready version (where has all Shatner's beer money gone); the ship hull textures look all too clean for instance, a dull filter overlay would have made it look more realistic.

Not really much interesting that hasn't been speculated about or asked a dozen times at cons over the years, I'd heard 90% of the stuff mentioned in the doc on this board at some time. A few good behind the scenes stories, like Nana Visitor and Marc Alaimo's unrequited sexual tension… Dukat… I mean Marc… really wanted to tap that

Is it just gonna be nostalgia with "hurr durr it was such a masterwork"?

Honestly when I watch interviews with Behr he seems kinda regretful over some decisions he has done in the show, and how he'd probably like to redo it now in the age of big-budget serialized epic TV shows that are available on demand. Back in the day the studio would push back hard against serialization because the audience wouldn't be comfortable with it, you had to watch every episode on time and if you miss one you had to wait till you can buy the VHS after the season ended, and a VHS could only contain 2-3 episodes max, so you couldn't even buy/rent out the entire season. This is why DS9 to me always comes over as opening up great things but fails in execution. Season 7 was crap, the way they tied it up was crap, they didn't go all the way with grey characters (Bashir ended up being good although he could have "succumbed" to the arrogance of the genetically enhanced and get mad, Dukat could become more grey instead of turning into an insane comic book villian that has no other objective than destroying the galaxy, Garak could have ended up as ambiguous instead of ending up a hero, some more main characters could have died, Kira could have been confronted with a decision where she had to choose between Bajor and the Federation and ends up betraying both of them, etc.) - Damar was the most "daring" thing they pulled, they developed an extra into a villian and then into an anti-hero, in a way that Game of Thrones couldn't have done it any better (the good GoT, not the crap GoT after season 4).

But in the end, it all falls short. The ensemble cast all survives and nobody turns evil, Dukat becomes a comic book villian, and the good side wins. Alaimo has complained for years now how he disliked the direction they were going with Dukat, and Behr has implicitly admitted that it was a decision merely based on the fact that he was becoming popular and you couldn't have people cheering for what is basically a fascist at conventions - today this also isn't a problem, but it was back in the day when you had Tipper Gore campaigning against "evil rock music" and similar stuff. I would have even liked to turn Garak bisexual, why not? In that way, if you compare it to the recent TV shows with blockbuster budgets and epic storylines, DS9 hasn't aged too well. People still watch TNG because it's episodical, you can just pick out your favourite episode and enjoy it by itself, and it is mostly all conceptual episodes with less emphasis on big effects or badass fights. However, DS9 needs badass fights, grimdark aesthetics, a sense of gloom, a dramatic score, etc. to function. As such, it was a pioneer back in its day but you always get the feeling that they could have been done it better if they had the means at their disposal they have today, and I think the creators and the cast both feel that way, so maybe this whole documentary is actually just an advertisement: It is released at a time in which ST series are created left and right, and if we can get a series about the fucking backstory of Georgou from STD then why can't we get another season of DS9? Just make a 20 years jump. I mean, fuck, just look at what could be done with DS9 if you have the money that STD has.

But their application will be left unheard. The studios in charge of ST now wouldn't be interested in a show that would only appeal to the Trekkie fanbase and not boomers and zoomers that go "MEMBER SPOCK MEMBER ENTERPRISE".

I don't know how he pulls it off, but it's amazing how Alaimo goes from average-looking to being attractive by putting on Cardassian make-up, which, let's be honest, isn't the most flattering alien make-up they have in Star Trek. But then again I imagine Visitor having quite a high standard considering she's really cute, no kidding.

Honestly I prefer the episodic-with-background-arcs approach to excessive serialisation. The latter almost always ends up with bullshit ass-pull twists after the first few seasons when the good starting characters and plot ideas are used up and often with a lot of filler too.

>Episodic allows for great one off episodes that a serialized story doesn't allow

Yeah, that's the problem with excessive serialisation. The series is meant to be viewed as a whole and as a result the individual episodes tend not to be too memorable, each episode just blends into the next with none of them really standing out. You don't often hear people taking about specific episodes that they love from that kind of show.

You can still have complete serialization and tell the stories "episodically", such as focusing completely on one character/location in one episode. I don't like when it's like in GoT where you have 5-6 story arc playing out in one episode simultaneously, that results in fragmentation and frankly boring parts because you know the story of this or that character won't actually do anything this episode. The best GoT episodes were the ones that only focused on one storyline, like the Battle of Blackwater. You could also easily just cut together all scenes or one character into one episode. I think this is possible and was actually used by Walking Dead a lot, but the problem was that Walking Dead turned to shit because of different reasons, mainly bad writing and petty personal drama, with dialog that thought it was smarter than it really it was (just like STD), but I do actually like the serialization via somewhat hermeneutic episodes approach.

Episodic shows have problems as well, and I think The Orville shows that. You don't have any real stakes every episode and it usually follows the same scheme: Introduction of a problem, twist, moral dilemma, resolution. This can get boring pretty quickly especially when you have an ensemble cast where everybody is the good guy and wears tons of plot armour. DS9 tried to move away from this but still suffered from it.

A lot of the better end of SoL anime does that focussed-episodic approach and it works very well when executed properly. Part of that is anime usually being limited to 12-13 24ish minute episodes a season instead of 22+ at close to an hour so there's no room for filler.

seems like such a stupid fear. I mean, sure you will have certain people cheering dukat because he was as close to a nazi as you could get in a tv show that wasnt outright protrayed as evil incarnate.

For me, the reason i liked dukat was that he always managed to manipulate the situation and me, and i always gave him the benefit of the doubt, until it was revealed he was a two-faced little rat. Then he's leave for a while, come back with a whole new scheme and i'd give him the benefit of the doubt again. I was in his corner everytime, only for him to reveal he was being a dick yet again.

He was one of the few characters to really make me question the nature of evil, and what it means to vilify the enemy, who could very well just be fighting for what he believes in, the same as you. That is a very complex idea for most viewers to digest, and whether that was the intent or not, that was the question it raised in me, and i think its also the main thing that made him so compelling.

49e927 No.31455

>seems like such a stupid fear

Absolutely, but it was a different time back then. Today you have characters like Ramsay Bolton or Negan being everybody's darling, and both of them are ten times worse than Dukat.

But Behr is on recording stating, that after the Marquis two-parter in S2, they didn't want Dukat to become "the friendly neighbourhood Cardassian" and they wanted to make clear that he's "evil". Hence the abusive relationship between Marc Alaimo's characterisation and the writers started to unfold, where they on one hand needed him to carry the main arc, on the other hand felt deeply uncomfortable with him becoming a fan favourite and a scene-stealer. In the end the writers decided to make him an insane villian, and I believe this could have been handled much better.

The fact about him being a two-faced rat is one of his obvious flaws, but it was mixed until the very end because he'd always given platforms to argue his viewpoint even if you disagree with it, yet it came over as sensible. This is why people still talk about someone in 2019 who was basically a side character - if an ISIS fighter tells you he enslaved women and children because Allah told him to, you clearly think he's just nuts, but for some reason Dukat's position is always somewhat reasonable, even if he is a fascist turncloak resembling a tinpot dictator installed by the US in Africa or Latin America.

Smug pedantic cuckposters as witnessed in post >>33010 need to be reminded early and often that they are not welcome, as was done immediately in >>33013 and >>33014. Personally I appreciate the crass and blunt responses they get, especially given how the leftist posts usually exude a smug self-assurance typical of their COR-certified echo chambers.
