Avoid almost everything written personally by Gene Roddenberry. Much like George Lucas, he was brilliant at being a producer (coming up with the high-concept ideas and hiring good people to implement them), but he needed to be kept off the set and out of the writing room or else he'd just fuck things up. He wrote most of the worst episodes, and none of the best.

VOY and ENT are shit upon a lot, but they both have their good episodes. If you don't want to sit through the shit, it isn't the worst thing in the world to use an episode guide for those two series (although you'll never understand other anon's pain unless you watch through the shit yourself). It should go without saying that STD is unwatchable trash.

I'd go as far as saying STD isn't even trek, despite having the official franchise name.

0db96f No.26286

It really isn't. There's some weird licensing split between Paramount and CBS. STD cannot use any original designs, Jew Jew Trek owns all that and Jew Jew Trek could reboot at any time not using anything from STD. STD also has its own rebooted continuity separate from the original and the movies. All that's left is the name.

I might have actually liked STD if it wasn't explicitly labeled "Star Trek". It's a competently filmed show with nice high budget effects and some decent acting by most of the cast. But yeah, it sure ain't Trek. Thank god for the Orville.

Swap out some ship designs for something without saucers and nacelles, call Starfleet the "Space Corps" or something, rename the alleged Klingons to something else sci-fi-ey, but otherwise keep everything the same, and STD might just work as a stupid-but-pretty action show a la Battlestar Galactica.

>>26282

Season 4 ENT (excluding the finale) is actually pretty decent. And it includes what I think is one of the most interesting story arcs in Trek, the gradual alliance of the four founding races of the Federation, three of whom were previously in either cold or open war with each other for years. That's the sort of long-form lore-exploration that ENT should have been doing all along.

Don't skip any episodes. What you need to understand is that "bad episodes" of Star Trek didn't really become miserable until TNG and beyond. When TOS had a bad episode, it was usually still pretty amusing. And, as a couple others mentioned, TOS's science fiction was generally pretty good, even when the premise was goofy.

Sounds like you just don't like TOS. Most of the episodes you listed I don't consider to be bad at all, granted some of them are shit. I'm also a little annoyed that you put Arena as your first bad choice, as if it was the first thing to come to mind when thinking about what constitutes a bad episode. I think it's a great episode, Captain Kirk trapped in a battle against a Gorn twice his size. No weapons, no support, no backup, only his wit and ingenuity to rely on. And even after being locked in a 'kill or be killed' battle, he still chooses to stick to his principles. It's a good episode, like many on that list. You either have bad taste or hate fun or both.

Amok Time

Mirror, Mirror

The Doomsday Machine

Journey to Babel

Enterprise and Voyager are terrible.

Focus on TOS and its six movies, then watch TNG and you have pretty much the best of Star Trek. DS9 is okay but obviously a knockoff of Babylon 5 with a slow first season and a captain who overacts worse than Shatner ever did.

I've never understood why some people don't like Conscience of the King. It's a very well-written episode with some solid acting, even from Shatner. Yet it's often overlooked in "best of" lists.

I've often thought that it shows Kirk at his best: thorough, thoughtful, and ethical. He doesn't go all vigilante-justice even though he's 99.9% sure he's right, because he wants to be 100% sure.

>DS9's first season was fucking bad, arguably as bad as TNG's.

Sure. But what I'm saying is that B5's first season is even worse than that.

Don't get me wrong, B5 seasons 2-4 are masterpieces, and even most of 5 is pretty good.

But even us hardcore "B5 is the best thing ever" fanboys will be the first to admit that B5's first season is one of the worst things ever to be on TV. It's worse than season 1 of TNG. It's worse than season 1 of DS9. It's even worse than season 1 of Stargate SG1. It's worse than season one of Seaquest goddamn DSV.

There's actual made-by-fans lists of timecodes of important scenes in the crap episodes so that people can get the backstory and skip right to season two without suffering through most of season one. I can count the number of watchable episodes of season one B5 on one hand:

Deathwalker

Signs and Portents

A Voice in the Wilderness (parts 1 and 2)

Chrysalis

John Sheridan is B5's equivalent of Riker's beard. Ain't there? You're likely in for a very bad time.

Nah, B5's first season is god awful on the first viewing, but rewatching it is kind of fun as you actually to see all the little hints and things you missed. Which, granted, is still a terrible way to start a show and probably why the spin off crashed and burned. And you couldn't pay me to watch it a third time. Meanwhile TNG's first season remains bad no matter off many times you've watched the entire series.

I went into B5 with no expectations and recall enjoying the first season quite a bit so I think you guys hate fun and are riddled with the aids. The show just took time to find its footing is all as most shows do. Then it took me awhile to warm up to Tron because I was used to that weird guy with schizophrenia, I liked him, also I liked that reptilian kike alien better as a perverted asshole arch nemesis of fanhead instead of the faggot hippy political activist he became. Prefer the bone head bitch bald too as someone who could be enemy or ally instead of just m'lady love interest omg she's so pretty perfect and nice for Tron. I also missed the giant mantis that dealt space crack or something. He just vanished into thin air. They should have at least killed him off.

Overall I think S1 was setting up a more sci fi/political thriller show and more drama was worked in later as the audience developed an affection for the characters. The drama got a little too heavy handed as B5 proceeded imo but it's still a good show.
