Looks like Picardo is returning and is going to have more screentime. Also why have we been ignoring this?

Looks promising. The fact that they only put a couple joke-ish lines in the trailer suggests they're moving forward on the idea that this is a Trek show that is occasionally funny, rather than a pure comedy, which bodes well for the future.

Alara was in the trailer too though. This is still very confusing, but I hope it's not a permanent replacement and just a case of her actor being tied up with something else, kinda like how George Takei was missing from half of TOS S2 so they brought in Chekov.

could be that they didn't know if they were losing her or not and when so they wrote Season 2 assuming she'd be there and brought in a clone to cover whatever they didn't have her for. Making her an obvious clone is just the show acknowledging the weirdness to the audience. Just my guess, though.

Yes. It is kinda like TNG with a purely comedy scene or two per espisode and handful silly lines in few scenes, but it is genuine scifi show despite that.

>Are there still many people that put stock in what what most critics would say nowadays?
The critical reception of Orville is just another reason to ignore (((critics))). It really triggered them and huge majority of critics completely ignored it that Orville is actually quite true to ethos of Trek despite being parody.
>Genuinely asking here
Critics completely trashed Orville based on 3rd episode, they gave first three episodes for media as pre-release review package. It tackles social issues. Gender and creating conflict between doing what you think is right and respecting another culture. It caused contradiction in liberal programming as liberals are supposed to do both but they end up having to choose one of 'em.

Excited.
Also fox is selling merch of the show, t-shirts and stuff. There's a Union t-shirt with a logo where the Fed one should be and I think that looks good. And I only just found out that back in January they made a companion book of S1, 160 pages of behind the scenes and stuff.

The main character is a white male cuck who gets BLUED by his wife's boyfriend . The physically strongest character is a female, whose chief personality flaw is not believing how amazing she is. The smartest character is black (after the robot, I guess). The dumbest character is a fucking white male. The wise earthy doctor is a black woman, and she don't need no man. And gay black trannies.
It seems like it would be Current Year-compliant. What's missing? Luckily, we have STD as a reference point. What is the function of art and entertainment in our time if not to usher in the new, final era of humanity – the cosmopolitan utopia that our wives' grandchildren will enjoy?
What I really want to know is how they can set an episode on Planet Reddit and not properly address the elephant in the room that is Reddit's ugly history of providing a platform for racism and misogyny. Apparently the show is set in a future where gamergate never happened.

>There will, however, be a new character: Talla Keyali played by Jessica Szohr, who (like Kitan) is also Xelayan and a security officer on board the USS Orville. Sage was in production on the Netflix film Last Summer during much of the time the second season of The Orville was being shot, and it isn’t clear at this time if she will return to the show. Details on how they’ll transition between Alara and Talla are unknown, but speaking to TrekMovie at SDCC executive producer David A. Goodman said, “I think you are going to be intrigued to see what we do with both of those characters. I don’t want to spoil it, but it is unexpected.”
Okay, so I guess they're gonna make it so that Alara's species can switch bodies or metamorphos into a different form or some shit, and we'll end up with basically the same character but with a different less cute face.
Still hoping they'll bring back Alara fully, but who knows.

I just finished re-watching the show in expectation of the second season.
I honestly can't believe how good the show is. There's some humour that falls flat, but apart from that, it's fantastic. There are interesting and varied characters, but not just that, the characters feel *real*, like actual people with their own desires and flaws. The plots are interesting and engaging, with ideas that make social commentary but still have a good time doing so. Like that episode with the voting on people. When I first watched it I thought it was a plot worthy of Black Mirror (and later watched Black Mirror S3 and realised it had the same idea). The effects are good, the worldbuilding is decent (hopefully it will develop more in further seasons) and the ship just feels alive with people going about their business.
